BritInVA 05-07-09, 10:27 AM Yea, but I don't think it comes close to that steel desk of yours that we hauled to the dump!
I disagree...........upper cabinet was HEAVY. Without those straps I doubt we would have got it back up without damage to cabinet, new floor or body. More likely all 3
are we talking about the TV or the cabinet as I am sure they are both equally heavy...
The upper part of the cabinet was the worse part. The TV was more awkward than heavy.......only hold points were under the TV and the tight in/out of cabinet.
Anybody want to come help move my old 36" XBR tube? Doesn't weigh more than 180lb!

I had wished I had those when my son and I were carrying a 26" tube tv up 5 freakin flights of stairs for my sister in law. It was still in the box but the box was tearing away from us.
BIGmouthinDC 05-07-09, 12:52 PM When my wife gave those to me one year for Christmas I scoffed at the notion of using them. But for big and bulky items they have proved useful. It was too bad i didn't even think of them until it was time to put things back in the room!

That cabinet must be made of balsa because there is no way those ladies should be smiling.
I really think these would be better for appliances and going down stairs.

When Sears delivered my fridge to the basement bar they used straps similiar to these and I thought WOW that really makes the job alot easier. And when they were done and on their way out the door I didn't say anything about the strap they left laying on the basement floor. :D Shore makes it easier gettin that full keg down to the kegerator.
BIGmouthinDC 05-07-09, 01:58 PM I always wondered what your arm would sound like when it snapped from trying to carry too much weight with those things.
I doubt that you would hear it because I would be yelling. I suspect that dislocating your shoulder is a possibility.

Good point.
Thankfully with the nicer weather (as opposed to having snow on the yard) I can now use my hand truck to take my kegs around back to the sliding glass doors into the basement instead of lugging it down the basement stairs. :)

I'm an orthopedic surgeon and I can tell you that when they snap, it's loud. Even when we reduce already broken arms there is a pretty good crunch. After a dad passed out, hit his head, and required staples, I now no longer let the parents stay in the room when I do the reduction!:D
Now back to Big's beautiful rooms.........

That area under the cabinet looks like it may have been photoshopped. Looks pretty suspicious to me anyway.
I would be involuntarily spewing if my wife was helping with a washer up or down the stairs using those things
Yeah, those rocks can get REALLY heavy.

I had a plummer friend re-pipe my bathroom out by the Home theater. we needed to carry a 40 gallon water heater down three steps, across the lawn, over a planter and down a 5 foot little hill. I thought he was nuts, but then he got out these straps and it was a piece of cake. With no back pain.

Sorry but how much?
Sorry but how much?
I registered with OPPO to receive updates and I just got an email a couple of days ago for an invite to purchase for 499. I don't know if that is a "special" price or what they are going to be going for all the time. There was speculation that the initial offer would be this price point then when all of the preorders are filled the general public would get the OPPO at 599. I'm not sure if that is still the case or not. I hope this answers your question.

RTROSE

No telling how long it wil ltake to get here. Or what condition it might be in.
Once, back in College, my roomate and I had this idea to use his 8mm movie camera and make a "film" around and about Winchester, Va. We shot things all out of order, and did some crazy stuff. We took the film to the Dart Drug for processing (you DC metro locals may remember Dart Drug). They tell us a week. W go back, no film. They tell us try tomorrow. No film. They tell us a couple more days. No film. FINALLY about three weeks later it shows up. The box has about 10 pieces of tape on it. Obviously it had been opened and closed a LOT. The only thing we can figure is that word got around that "you've GOT to see this" and everyone who touched it watched it and taped the box back up.
I sure hope yours is still sealed when you get it.

I think they have pretty good sound for minimum space. There was a stock liquidator locally that sold them at a Saturday computer flea market for a pretty good price and I picked up a second set for the Misses.
BIGmouthinDC 05-13-09, 08:27 PM Update on the OPPO:
I have it in a temporary slot in my rack. I have it hooked up to my projector and I'm getting a picture. But something really strange is going on with my multi-channel analog inputs on my receiver and I can't get any sound. I've checked with another source and same issue so I'm pretty sure it is an issue with my receiver. I have the manual out and I'm seeing if it is something that needs setting. It's an old Yamaha RX-V650 and I haven't ever tried to use the analog inputs until today.
One piece of the diagnostic puzzle is that you have to hit the multi-channel button for the inputs to work. So I can hit it and have sound but then over about 15 seconds it slowly fades out. I can exit that listening mode. Hit the button again and it does the same thing. WTH?
If I can't get it firing tonight, tomorrow I'll plug in an Outlaw 950 I have.
queendvd2 05-13-09, 11:21 PM Ok, now that you've finished watching "Lost" (pretty amazing huh) let's get that Outlaw fired up :D!
BIGmouthinDC 05-14-09, 12:18 AM Actually I time shifted so we could watch that other show and just now finished. I'm just seeing if anyone had any bright ideas. No pun intended.
My Outlaw only has 5.1 analog in. So while I have will have sound It won't be 7. I've been waiting for the new Outlaw pre/pro or the new Emotiva pre/pro, I might have to look at getting something sooner than I planned. Or pick up something in the interim.
shawnwalters 05-14-09, 10:50 AM I've been waiting for the new Outlaw pre/pro or the new Emotiva pre/pro, I might have to look at getting something sooner than I planned. Or pick up something in the interim.
And so the endless upgrade process begins...:D
BeerParty 05-14-09, 01:18 PM However I've reached the point where I can't use the flooring stapler and now the progress gets a lot slower.
Boy, do I remember that problem. I installed some pre-finished hardwood flooring in my house and was left with the longest wall in the room for the last few courses (where you couldn't use the flooring nailer). What a pain! And, no Logan, I did not nail my own shoe (a near miss doesn't count)!
But that still doesn't excuse the update delay (but the new Oppo does ).
BIGmouthinDC 05-14-09, 05:00 PM OK, the blu-ray has found it's permanent shelf and I ended up just using the optical output to my receiver connection for now. Watched Watched Incredible Hulk movie that was 5.1 content. My receiver came up with the phantom rears.
Review
Speed: I know there has been a lot of complaints about Blu-ray player start up times, I was very happy with the speed at which I got to the Top Menu screen.
Physical: The thing is solid and heavier than I expected. The remote is back-lit and easy to use. As reported the power cable is a relatively loose fit but works just fine. It is identical to the power cable on the 983.
Menu response is good and setup menu items available while the movie is playing. Video adjustment is on the fly and the menu minimizes on the screen so you can see what effect the changes are having on the picture.
Picture, looks like I expected on Par with the best satellite HD material I've seen.
Sound, sounded tighter and better localized where it should be.
No problems to report after previewing two Blurays and One SD.

Any reports on value yet? I guess it is tough for you without real previous BluRay experience (I think), but with the higher price tag what are your thoughts?
BIGmouthinDC 05-14-09, 07:43 PM Value. You are absolutely right that I have only seen brief demos of other BR machines so it is hard to compare. One thing I can comment on is the customer service and on-line cult of Oppo users. In my opinion the assistance and support of OPPO phone and e-mail support has been A+, I even had a chat yesterday with a guy that wasn't reading from a script but actually knew about the machine and discussed my problem. Try that with Panasonic or Sony. I also find the on-line community quite useful. I would assign a 25% premium for those items.

WOW, thats amazing value on support alone. You are right though, in todays market, to find good support techs is next to impossible until you reach at least 2nd and 3rd tier. Truthfully, I have the sony s350 and while my use has been limited while I complete my space, the load times arent as bad as they seem. Yes it is longer than a SD player of old, but by the time I put in a disc get to my seat and get things ready to play enough time has elapsed that the disc is ready to play.
How is the situation with the audio, have yu gotten it ironed out yet or are you still just going 5.1?

From everything I've read, keeping up with the Bluray disk idiosyncrasies is an ongoing task that only a company with a commitment to finding solutions and issuing firmware changes is in a position to handle. Rather than buy a big name brand that will be replaced in a year with another model I have confidence that OPPO will support his player for a much longer window before they release a replacement model.
It looks like I may have to wait for my Pre/pro upgrade before I can enjoy the the full 7 channel master sound. If I go Optical out I'm limited to what my receiver or pre/pro decode which is 5 and a make believe rear. If I go analog out I am limited to 5.1 unless I figure out what is bothering my Yamaha. Perhaps it wasn't designed to function as a Pre. I'm not using the amp section and maybe it won't take the analog inputs and pass to the analog outputs or something like that.
HDvids4all 05-15-09, 11:15 AM Hey BIG, you probably won't be able to get more than 5.1 audio from the analog ports either. I'm pretty sure (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) the only way to get true 7.1 LPCM audio, as well as DTS-HD, etc. is over an HDMI port. All the other "older" sound connections don't have the bandwidth available to support 7 channel audio, which is why you're stuck with 5.1 and your receiver pushes out the phantom rear surrounds you mentioned.
Similar issue with the 1080p video content. Blu-ray players require the HDMI port for certain encryption mechanisms between the player and display device. If the player can't verify the encryption over HDMI (in the case of connecting via component cables), the player will downsample the video to 1080i.
All minimal quirks aside, it sounds like a pretty decent piece of hardware. And the quality of service you mentioned is especially important for blu-ray players, since they constantly change the specs and force firmware updates for compatibility.
shawnwalters 05-15-09, 11:15 AM Thanks for the info on the Oppo. How do standard dvds look compared to your old player?
kjlewie 05-15-09, 11:48 AM No bright ideas here, but I glanced through the Yamaha manual (a very exciting coffee break). I'm sure you've already tried everything in the manual, but I'll throw out a couple of simple (minimal ridicule, please) suggestions from the book.
p32 - To enjoy audio from the MULTI CH INPUT jacks with a video source, first select the video source, THEN press Multi Ch Input.
p36 - Input mode can be AUTO, DTS, ANALOG. When using AUTO, the receiver looks for digital then analog signals. Maybe try ANALOG?
That's it...pretty weak, I know, and it doesn't explain why you get sound for 15 secs that fades away?
Good luck.
BIGmouthinDC 05-15-09, 12:31 PM I know, and it doesn't explain why you get sound for 15 secs that fades away?
Good luck.
I actually think I have the fade away figured out. I will be fiddling with this some more to verify. I don't believe the fading was the Multi working and then fading I think it was the digital connection working then when I switched to the Multi analog the digital faded away.
BIGmouthinDC 05-15-09, 12:32 PM Hey BIG, you probably won't be able to get more than 5.1 audio from the analog ports either. I'm pretty sure (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) the only way to get true 7.1 LPCM audio, as well as DTS-HD, etc. is over an HDMI port.
From the Oppo Spec sheet:
Dolby® TrueHD - Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment. The BDP-83 supports bit-stream output of Dolby TrueHD via its HDMI 1.3 output. It can also internally decode Dolby TrueHD into LPCM and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals.
When you think about it, there would be no reason to have the 6th and 7th analog output connections built into the player if the player wasn't going to process anything that could be sent out via those jacks.
BIGmouthinDC 05-15-09, 12:43 PM Thanks for the info on the OPPO. How do standard DVDs look compared to your old player?
I own a SD 5th element and I've ordered the bluray. I will try to do a screen shot of the identical scene of both. I have been using the OPPO 983 upscaling player with the same Anchor Bay upscaling solution and I think it is as good as it gets.
HDvids4all 05-15-09, 01:43 PM Doh, I should have looked at a pic of the back of the unit again, now I'm on the right page. Getting my analog ports mixed up. Yep, those should work just fine, it's the optical and coaxial ports that won't handle 7 channels. Definitely points to a receiver issue, my bad.

BIGmouthinDC 05-18-09, 07:59 AM BIG, any screen shots yet? Or other additional observations on the Oppo?
Watched the Changeling this weekend in BR. Still haven't got my Receiver reading the analog inputs so spent some time reading up on the available receivers and pre-pros.
As far as screen shots, I now have 5th element in SD, BR and recorded Sat HD. If I get ambitious I'll do some screen shots of all three.

Quick aside from the Oppo stuff: what is your impression on the effectiveness of the sound treatment for your family room subfloor under the new flooring you recently installed? Are you happy with the result?
BIGmouthinDC 05-18-09, 12:38 PM Hey BIG,

I will report on that soon. It is too early to pass judgment. Still a few items left to do to finish the job.
My initial sense is that it helped mitigate a real problem but did not work a miracle.
BIGmouthinDC 05-19-09, 10:42 AM ONE SMALL STEP:
as you may recall I was having trouble getting my 7.1 multi channel analog inputs to work on my receiver. After thinking about this some more and playing around with everything I discovered that when I push the multi-channel input button on the receiver it sends a trigger signal to my amp turning it off. So If I remove the trigger cable I can get everything to work.
Now if I can only figure out why it is doing that. Also I'm picking up a little bit of hiss/hum with the cable connections to the receiver instead of just the optics, sigh.
How do you have your gear set up? You say you have a receiver as well as a separate amp?

My problem is I need 4ohm output. My Old Sony does 8 and 4 ohm. But I cannot find a Receiver, that i like, that doese 4 ohm speakers. So I'am waiting for the new Outlaw pre-processor.
BIGmouthinDC 05-19-09, 05:03 PM How do you have your gear set up? You say you have a receiver as well as a separate amp?
CJ
Yes when I originally setup my theater I had the Outlaw 950 preamp and the 7 channel x200 watt Outlaw amp. I finally got around to hanging my projector and firing everything up and the lip-sync issue was driving me nuts. So I looked for a cheap receiver that had adjustable lip-sync and all the then current decoders to use only as a preamp. I picked that Yamaha. It was intended as a place holder and now I'm waiting for a value oriented HDMI switching pre-amp to go on the market like the proposed Outlaw or the proposed Emotiva. I guess the Integra is another option.
When I get the new pre-amp I will retire the Yamaha to my office.
cliff841 05-21-09, 01:54 AM Big your theater is amazing. I too really like Kirk's Uptown Paradiso but I like yours even better. I wish I had the room for a theater like that. Thanks for sharing with us.

GP: On that front if you read the thread on the Sherwood Newcastle Receiver version of what is to be the Outlaw Pre platform they seem to be in a failure to launch mode. It doesn't sound like any time soon.
zuesmaximus 05-23-09, 01:54 PM BIG your HT is amazing! love your color choices.
How do you like the OPP player? dying for one of those.
BIGmouthinDC 05-23-09, 08:59 PM Watched 3 more Blurays in the Oppo. That makes 5. I'm happy, no glitches. But then my experience base is one. you will get much better feedback from the Pre-Release squad.

Big Mouth, you theater is so awsome everyone tries to high jack it :D Good for google search hits though
BIGmouthinDC 05-25-09, 09:11 PM Chris, where is my projector?
queendvd2 05-25-09, 10:02 PM Chris, where is my projector?
I thought the same exact thing when I saw it was the Plasma guy again!
BIGmouthinDC 05-26-09, 08:15 AM These do not work :( I bought some a while back before this was posted.
They have worked perfectly for the items I've used them on. They are great for items where the only gripping location is a bottom edge that would crush your fingers when you set the item down. They also give you better stability of oversize items. Not helpful for items beyond your normal weight lifting capacity.

Could be a long wait. Anyone know of a pre and amp product, that does 4ohm and is priced around the 3k price point?

They worked great for us. We carried a 30 gallon water heater with them. These straps were the only way to get the water heater over a planter, across the lawn and down a 5' slope.

Thanks, Of course without your help I'm not sure how it would have turned out. Without your suggestion of starting in the middle to line up with the frame around the fireplace it might not have turned out as nice. Also the help moving the beast of a cabinet was invaluable, hope your back is OK.

Forthcoming after the mandatory 30 day cure.
queendvd2 06-02-09, 09:11 PM Looks fantastic BIG! You always continue to amaze me. I also liked how you positioned the furniture on the diagonal. I would have never thought outside the box like that.
BIGmouthinDC 06-02-09, 11:21 PM Thanks Queen. Actually that isn't really the final configuration but we do use the angle concept. I can not take any credit for the furniture placement.

Hmmmm
First picture of the completed new floor, and there is a large rug and furniture in the middle of the room at an odd angle. Is there something you don't want us to see, Big?
Just kidding - it looks great!
smakovits 06-03-09, 09:58 AM Floor look s nice, now was each board and individual piece, of it was this more of a nailed down engineered floor? if they are individual pieces, thats a lot of nailing..............
As far as starting in the middle, the guy that laid my floor did that too so he can line up to the wall right or something. He nailed down a scrap board to hammer against to get things tight. I am glad I paid to have it done as I surely would have screwed things up. A bit pricey, but better than having a crap looking floor in the basement.
zuesmaximus 06-03-09, 10:01 AM WOW!!! Great work:D

Bought a Chinese knock off tool on e-bay, less than it would have cost to rent a real tool.

It is tongue and grove 3/4 inch solid oak. You nail the tongue side of the boards. When you start in the middle you have to buy some slip tongue to glue in the groove of the starter board so that you can head off in both directions.
In my search for the slip tongue I discovered a great wholesale flooring warehouse that had the tongue and more importantly every thing else you need. Flooring wasn't any different in price but all the other stuff was. For example the shoe molding that is pre-finished to match the floor runs $1.68/ft at Home depot. At Cherokee wholesalers it was $.42/ft. No problem buying when they say what company you say "I work for myself" and they will will happily take your credit card.

BIGmouthinDC 06-10-09, 01:59 PM The first test result is that sitting in my office the TV noise I hear from directly above is about the same as when I had carpet and pad which I consider a Win. It is not sound proof but at least I can't tell what TV show she is watching, but I can tell when it is turned on. My office ceiling is a 1/2 inch layer of drywall over a layer of sound-stop (I was young and foolish back then and GG wasn't on the market).
I haven't really evaluated the sub-woofer rumble to upstairs effect yet.

Unfortunitaly I have the same thing, sound-stop, in my Home theater. I also was young and foolish back then and GG wasn't on the market. At lease the drywall is 5/8 over the 1/2 sound-stop.

Where did you get the little lights there on the bottom of the steps?
Im about to start build the step and wanted to get the lights and everything else I need...
thx...
almost done with my room...
I'll be posting pix here soon...
BIGmouthinDC 07-26-09, 08:32 PM Where did you get the little lights there on the bottom of the steps?
Those are step lights and the company I got them from was sold to another company but they are still available here:
http://www.affordablequalitylighting.com/docs/outdoor/step_deck/subindex.html
I have the PRLB-HS with uses a 120v Halogen bi-pin bulb and they are a PAIN IN THE ASS. They burn out all the time, I think it is the vibration.
Next build I do I will use the PRBL-HL which uses standard base bulbs and I would probably stick in an 11 watt bulb (like those over my back bar) and I could skip the dimmer.
I also did an upgrade and cut pieces of a light diffuser panel and inserted in addition to the provided clear glass.
badata2d 07-26-09, 08:46 PM I'll second DC's comments on the lights. He helped me with suggestions on installations. They are almost impossible to install to code, and so far all 3 bulbs are gone in less than 2 weeks. I had no option because my steps were built and there were very few 120V lights that would fit. Next time I'd do them differently to avoid these lights.
DC - always enjoy browsing your thread. You are a source of great knowledge to many of us with our inexperienced questions.
BIGmouthinDC 07-26-09, 09:32 PM I've actually been thinking about rebuilding the lights and substituting a chandelier base LED light. I think we could get it to fit in the box.
Joey: They actually didn't cost me anything. CP gave me the set-up as partial compensation for his use of my thread for self promotional purposes.
I don't care who you are that is funny right there!
I did want to tell you that your tongue and groove flooring looks fantastic and the lighting on the steps looks great as well.
I completely understand about the distracted part. My wife accuses me of the same thing, however I'm not near as talented as you ;).

gusmolnar 08-23-09, 08:48 PM Thanks,
Here we are today:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC00363.jpg
I am amazed at how awesome your project has turned out. What an inspiration to all. I have a 2000 sq ft open basement with a kitchen similar to yours, what I am craving for is how can I get the designs or information on how you built the bar design. It's absolutely perfect and is what I've been looking for in my basement. wanting to know how you connected all the pieces together to make it the jewel that it is. End caps, size, how and where you got the curve template, if that's what it is. Please Please Please Help.
BIGmouthinDC 08-23-09, 09:52 PM I kind of made it up as I went along.
first question:
As for the curve I just drew it out on the floor with a string and copied it with the FlexC track
http://www.flexc.com/
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSCN3758.jpg
then you stack it to make a duplicate for the top.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSCN3763.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSCN3765-1.jpg
you anchor it to the floor then add the studs. The wood studs were to mount the foot rail. Warning getting a curved foot-rail was a complicated and expensive endeavor that I would think twice about if I ever do this again.
Next question (keep them in bite size pieces please)
BritInVA 08-23-09, 09:52 PM Oh No - I fear more napkins with coffee stains are about to appear in this thread :D

two layers of 3/8 screwed to the studs
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC00374.jpg
then 3 layers of 1/4 inch glued together using the front of the bar as the form the first layer was held with clamps and I added a temp strip at the bottom to support as I glued them up.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC00382.jpg
Then I took it off and gave it to the upholstery guy to make the padded fronts and end caps. They all got attached by screwing from the back side. Some access holes were cut in the back of the cabinets to get access at the Bottom of the front panel and to bolt the foot-rail. The paddes panel was mounted a few inches down from the top and was surrounded by metal laminate from Alza.com

I rounded over the back edges of the side sections (not shown in any pics), Turned out I wanted them to sit proud of the cabinets so I slapped on a piece of 3/4 MDF to the back and used my router on the outside edges. Also this pic shows how I glued and screwed the PVC half rounds to the front.

guamguam 09-03-09, 03:44 PM Big,
Do you have any info on the lettering you used above the bar? I'm thinking about something similar, but I'm guessing it is out of my limited remaining budget :)
BIGmouthinDC 09-03-09, 03:58 PM They are a very common item at commercial sign shops. Ask for metal faced gator foam letters. Expect to pay $20 -40 per letter depending on size. There is a back and forth discussion of the letters in the "best room in the house" thread.
I'm sure you could make something yourself by printing out letter templates on your computer and cutting out letters from your material of choice.
The font used has two names, Anastasia and Anna. Last time I looked I was able to find one of them on a free font site.

BIGmouthinDC 09-03-09, 09:23 PM My immediate current project is to build a 10 x 12 shed. My wife said it has to have siding and look like the house, so looks like another of my trade mark overbuilt projects. The shed project is actually going to free up some space in the area where I am finishing the basement bathroom so that it will be easier to finish.
Tomorrow I start on the foundation. If anyone wants to play along at home I will post pics here.
queendvd2 09-03-09, 10:52 PM Tomorrow I start on the foundation. If anyone wants to play along at home I will post pics here.
I'd like to join in on the fun so please do post. It's like a whole new episode of BIG the Builder :).
RPh Drew 09-03-09, 11:28 PM I have a 14' x 15' slab that I poured 2 years ago right behind my garage but if I start one more project before my basement is done I will strangle myself (if my wife doesn't beat me to it). By all means post away. I would probably already have mine done but I want a 3' x 3' indent in one corner where the stairs from my deck will land and I was having a hard time coming up with the truss solution for it.
Ok Biggie... what can us over builders put into a shed...
Electric and lighting... of course
custom shelving/organization... a given.
sky lights... now you are getting there.
Solar panels???
Garage door opener on the garden tractor???
Running water???
Phone to the main house???
Weather station??
Hurricane proof???
smakovits 09-04-09, 07:50 AM The only note I will make about shed building is make sure it is bigger than you need. You always hear a person say I wish it was bigger, after they are out of space. I got a variance for my shed because I wanted it bigger than the city permitted, when at the meeting with the building committee they asked why I want it that big. I said because I dont want to run out of space, as I said this, one of the committee member chuckles, turning to the guy next to him and says, dont I know...
I was going to do like10x12 but ended up with 12x16. Right now it is way bigger than I need, but I like not being cramped. Just my 2 cents.
as far as things that are need, electrical is a must, this is one item I still need to do, I am just delaying the process of trenching across my back yard...
BIGmouthinDC 09-04-09, 08:29 AM In the location of choice I am already pretty well constrained to a 10x12. Our local code is that anything under 150 sq ft doesn't require a permit.
As for extras the wife has requested siding to match the house I just wanted to use that patterned sheathing and paint it. I just want to make a couple of doors, the WAF says true exterior doors. While I understand why some would need Electric service it is not in my Shed1.0 plan.
Going with a raised floating pier foundation not a poured slab.

tlogan6797 09-04-09, 08:47 AM IT DRIED
Biggie, you make me laugh out loud, LOL!
AHA! Shed building. We did that BEFORE the basement build. The next person who says they need to build shelves is LOGANED FOREVER.
oman321 09-04-09, 08:59 AM I to would like to see your progress on this. I recently went to town hall to inquire about making a shed after being inspired by Scopeguy. Either way they require a permit but if it is over the 10x12 size it becomes a PITA.
Even for a basic permit they require that the shed be anchored down to the ground. The inspector said so it doesn't fall over.... I thought to myself you must see that happen often hugh!!! For anything bigger they would need actual plans drawn up and then they charge you by the sq. footage for the permit vs. $25-35.00(can't recall how much).
RPh Drew 09-04-09, 09:57 AM I need a permit for 200sq ft or over so
210 (14x15 shed)
- (minus)
9 (3x3 corner cut out for door landing)
- (minus)
6 (2x3 cut out for easier access to electric meter on the back of house)
=
195 = no permit!!!:D
Something tells me we should start a new thread.
"I ran out of money, patience or WAF on the theater so I thought I would go outside and build something".
hanesian 09-04-09, 11:00 AM Can't wait to see what you come up with. No doubt it will be something that will give a new meaning to the word 'shed.'
I know this doesn't fit your stated criteria, but I always kind of dreamt of a shed to hold my woodpile ...
http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/hanesian/Wood_Shed600.jpg
Of course, it would also have to have shelves. Definitely. That goes without saying.

I am subscribed and will be anxiously awaiting updates. In the spring I am planning to build the 10x16 shed from the "Building a Shed" book (http://www.amazon.com/Building-Shed-Planning-Foundations-Details/dp/B002BWQ50O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252091245&sr=8-1), but I'll bet I get better ideas from your build pictures than I did from the book.
BIGmouthinDC 09-04-09, 03:21 PM I picked up that book for $3.95 on Alibris.com, it does have some good ideas, actually the use of the pier blocks is in there somewhere.
BIGmouthinDC 09-10-09, 01:51 PM Shed Installment #1 the foundation
OK so last week I threatened to build a shed. I've actually done some work on it.
First I had to find a spot and with all the trees and septic field this is the spot I came up with. Not perfect, too close to trees and does experience some run off so I need to take that into consideration with the foundation design.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1510.jpg
first order of business is to get the first four corners located and with blocking level with each other.
you scrape away the top soil, add pea gravel and tamp hard
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1508.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1524.jpg
Now you've got to level everything with 4x4 PT blocks
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1516.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1518.jpg
Next I layout the joist locations on the two long 12 ft boards. Santa needs to send me a bigger framing square.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1513.jpg
New definition for tailgating.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1514.jpg
now need to attach to the first two boards. Since I'm working alone you need some clamps and blocking to hold the boards in place
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1521.jpg
other side
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1523.jpg
now the board sets in place
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1522.jpg
Next is to put all the remaining joists into place,
Again with the clamps
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1527.jpg
Set the joist in place and measure the size of blocking required:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1534.jpg
remove the joist, cut the blocking and insert
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1535.jpg
Put the joist back in place, nail at the ends and toenail to the blocking.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1556.jpg
Repeat 28 times.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1541.jpg
Last step is too add all the cross bracing under where the edges of the 4x8 sheets of flooring with rest
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1544.jpg
before long you are done with the foundation framing, notice the two cantilevered sections at the ends that are there to hide the piers out of view.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1543.jpg
Today i made a trip to the quarry where i found out you can get as much crushed stone as will fit in a pick-up for $30. I'm planning on putting this around the piers to stabilize the soil from any further erosion from run off and to minimize the desirability of the under shed area for critter nesting. probably going to need metal wire mesh perimeter as well
If I had stronger springs I could have gotten more.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1545.jpg
Stay tuned.

J/K! Nice work:D
BIGmouthinDC 09-10-09, 02:10 PM So how is this related to the Home theater?
I need to get some stuff out of the basement so I can finish the theater bathroom which now is a storage area.
Also I can't think of a better place to stash all those big AV boxes you need to keep until the stuff is past the ship in for repair stage.
Also need to boost my view count now that Catham has zoomed right past me. But who is counting?
Last excuse is I need some filler before I start the HT2.0 rebuild.
dc_pilgrim 09-10-09, 02:36 PM Also need to boost my view count now that Catham has zoomed right past me. But who is counting?

how did you know the board under the level was, um, straight enough to use as a level?
I think i spent the last 3 days looking over dozens of HT builds on these forums. I absolutely adore the layout to yours. The bar in the back is just brilliant.
Hopefully some of the building knowledge that i been absorbing will help out whenever i get a space of my own.
Best of luck with the shed!

Lucky Bigs eye sight is better than yours Tom otherwise it would be the shed base equivalent of your drywalling around a light switch.
tlogan6797 09-10-09, 04:18 PM Personally, I would have used a string level, but we know how THAT went with my ceiling.

I don't own one. Hmm, another item for the Santa list.
HeyNow^ 09-10-09, 07:49 PM Big,
You need to get a tractor with a front end loader....I would not part with mine! I am like you, I do everything by my self and at times a helping hand would be a tremedous help. You know, ladder, one foot, balancing on your toes to reach something.... air nail it hurry!
smakovits 09-10-09, 08:39 PM you missed some limestone under the truck there...
Big, super off topic, but I know your the man with the answer if there is one. About a year ago we re-finished our hardwood floors. You know, they came, sanded, poly-urethane...well, today, we had a company come out to clean the vents now that most construction is complete and dust will be limited. Long story short, they didnt stay long. As it turns out they were not able to remove any of the vent covers because the guys that did the floor took the easy way out and never removed them, so now they are sealed in place. I spent about 45 minutes this evening to get 2 of them up, however, I am nervous to continue. In one spot it took a small sliver of the floor with it and if the wife sees she will kill me. Some wood glue later tonight should fix that, but for now I quit before causing any major damage.
They always say there is an easy way and the hard way. I figure me slowly trying to wedge it up with a screw driver is the hard way. I figured I would come on here to ask you for any helpful advice to hopefully help me solve this dilemma without too much headache or without damaging the floor too much. If you are stumped, so be it, hopefully someone else has the answer. If not again, I figured my last resort is to call the floor company that did it and see what they can do for me.
Thanks.
P.S. Sorry for derailing your thread for this.
oman321 09-10-09, 08:47 PM That stinks Smak,
You should probably use a putty knife and tap it lightly with a hammer towards the edges all around, continue to go around till it is pried lose. Perhaps try to score with a utility knife as well before you begin.
BIGmouthinDC 09-10-09, 08:58 PM Yes tap from the side with a stiff putty knife all around or get one of these which is plenty stiff.

BIGmouthinDC 09-10-09, 09:18 PM Greg, that is a good looking shed. I'm getting the same style doors in a double wide.
I like how you were able to sink the piers and bring the pavers over at just the right height.
smakovits 09-10-09, 09:27 PM Greg, the only thing I worry about your shed is that it is in dirt only, did you put any gravel of sorts under those. With heavy rain I fear them moving, but I have no idea if it is an issue at all. I am a computer guy not an engineer.
As for the vent covers, I will give the putty knife a try...stay tuned.
Scopeguy 09-10-09, 10:03 PM There is some gravel under the blocks. There is not actually that much soil back there, after a few inches in turns to really hard clay. I'm thinking of putting some weeping tile and washed gravel along the fence and out into the common area behind my property to help keep this area drained. It's the lowest part of my yard and I don't need any water problems with all the work that has gone into the basement.
Big; a real double door on the shed should look and work great. I dislike the look of plywood doors on sheds, they just don't look as nice.

Big, I think you over engineered the floor in this thing? What do you plan to store in that shed?
I built an 8x12 at my last house. I used 2 4x6 skids that were attached with galvanized steel brackets to concrete piers made with those lovely tubes. The skids then held a 2x8 floor with 3/4 T&G. Sturdy as hell!

I have a 14' x 15' slab that I poured 2 years ago right behind my garage but if I start one more project before my basement is done I will strangle myself (if my wife doesn't beat me to it). By all means post away. I would probably already have mine done but I want a 3' x 3' indent in one corner where the stairs from my deck will land and I was having a hard time coming up with the truss solution for it.
Ok Biggie... what can us over builders put into a shed...
Electric and lighting... of course
custom shelving/organization... a given.
sky lights... now you are getting there.
Solar panels???
Garage door opener on the garden tractor???
Running water???
Phone to the main house???
Weather station??
Hurricane proof???
I had water, lights, outlets, and custom shelving in the one above.
My FIL has a 16x20 with an 8' roll up garage door, cable, 32" LCD, 5.1 surround sound, yada, yada, yada.

I did watch the 3 episodes of Red Dwarf earlier this week. You were right, pretty low budget. Interesting that they ended it with them still out there somewhere. It was actually just as interesting to see the British commercials and what's with this thing called Dave TV?
Chiahead 09-11-09, 04:50 PM you definately need a TV in there and maybe the Yamaha for 5.1? too small for 7.1 in that shed, besides, you don't want to overbuild for the neighborhood do you?

thanks
BIGmouthinDC 09-12-09, 08:28 AM I know this is off topic but on your equipment rack door do you have it latch somehow or magnets to hold it shut/prevent rattling?
With the fabric it fits pretty tight, but I did put two magnetic latches on the door, one up top and one on the bottom.
Basic truth is I usually just leave the door open unless I have company.

Gerry S 09-12-09, 10:39 AM I was thinking of using those blocks to build a deck.
Are you using the plans they provide at deckplans.com for the shed foundation or just winging it? I think they are the manufacturer of the blocks you are using, and they do seem to use a bunch in all of their plans.
I'm still torn - to build a deck with their plans requires a bunch of those blocks. Still considering renting the auger...
BIGmouthinDC 09-12-09, 12:04 PM Are you using the plans they provide at deckplans.com for the shed foundation or just winging it? I think they are the manufacturer of the blocks you are using, and they do seem to use a bunch in all of their plans.
I didn't want to dig too deep because I have hard clay soil and a bunch of roots to contend with so the floating pier system seemed like the right approach. I did get their recommendation for a 10x12 and it involved using 3 piers for every 10 ft joist but they spaced the joists 2 ft apart and used 21 piers. I wanted to go with 12 inch OC 2x6 joists so I alternated 3 and 2 piers. Other wise I would have had 3 rows of piers literally shoulder to shoulder and that would have limited drainage in the area under the shed.
Obviously 28 piers seems like a lot but all I can say is that it is solid and was a lot easier than digging for concrete footings. Another foundation design I considered was similar to the ready made sheds with 3 4x4 runners (or bigger) length wise and a 2x4 joist structure on top of that. You place flat concrete blocks under the three 4x4s to level it up and you could probably go with 4-5 blocks per 4x4. If you have a level lot you can actually just rest the three runners on the ground. Many prebuilt sheds are put in place using that method.
BIGmouthinDC 09-12-09, 12:19 PM I have no idea what you just said....no remote idea.
Watch the first year season of Red Dwarf on-line at Netflix and check it out. Basically a British science fiction comedy focusing on the lives of a couple of lowest grade crew members of the massive mining ship Red Dwarf. If you like it there are 10 more seasons you can watch. Each episode is only 30 minutes so it goes quickly.

I have a hard clay soil too, so I think I'm a good candidate for this system. I am a bit overwhelmed by the number of piers they require, and wonder if I can cut back a bit. Another minus is they recommend 2x6's for the decking material, instead of the 5/4" stuff with the routed edges. If you use the 5/4" decking, they increase the number of piers: my 14x10 ground level deck would require 36 piers!

Thanks for that link. I bought the Taunton book on deck building - by far one of the best I've seen. But the author didn't go into much detail about using the pier blocks. In the end I'll probably follow the manufacturer's plans.

Ha, yeah, thats my old dish. When they came to install my super dish so I can point to the Eastern Arc for locals in HD, I asked the guy if he can leave it. I figured if he is just going to throw it away, then I might as well hold on to it. I figure if one day I create a tailgate setup or something, I am one step ahead because I already have the dish and wont have to buy one now.
Looking at that picture tells me I have to do some moe organizing. While pretty empty, the place is a mess.

smakovits 09-17-09, 10:17 AM Smak, in that first pic it looks like you have a deck off that shed with a wheel barrel stored underneath :p
Ha, yeah. Thats a tree fort that was there when we moved in. It is right behind the shed. I cant wait till my son is older and he is climbing from there onto the shed roof. It is inevitable... Although it would be nice to have my own deck off the shed for when I am kicked out of the house.
Wait, maybe not, decks are nice, but that requires me to have to stain it and maintain it. Tedious work I am not ready for, this is why I am neglecting the existing house deck in preparation to rip it down and install a stamped concrete patio instead...at least that is the plan.
Smakovits: Did you DIY the SHED? I see the use of mending plates for the roof trusses and I think I am going to use homemade wood versions.
No, I wanted to DIY, but with everythign I had going on with the basement and getting ready for a baby, time was fairly limited. Considering the basement is 1.5 years in the making, I just didnt want to try and build the shed as a weekend project. My buddies are unreliable and incapable, so there was no way I was finishing it on my own this year.
As a result, I just went with one of those Amish/menanite places I found at the home show early in the year and just paid them to do it. Talking with a guy at work that has priced his own, I would have saved about $1k doing it myself and I feel having it done in one day was worth that money to me, so I hired it out.
I did the base, I dug it out a bit to level the ground and then filled it with limestone. They simply built right on top of that, laying 4x4's as the foundation right on the limestone base. I hope this is secure and I dont have to worry about it washing out and shifting off level over the years. Thats my only fear. Other than that, I am happy with it.
When I get the roof re-done on the house in the spring, I will have them put a gutter on the shed. They want $250 to do it now, $150 when they are there for the roof. Well, I priced it at Lowes and it was going to be close to $100 just for the parts at the least, so it is worth it for me to wait.
Other than that, I know they nailed the floor, so at some point i iwill go back over with screws when they start to come out, if they do.

Ok MPLS alumni how did Nancy Nelson meet bill carlson?
Hmmm....
http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr79/hanesian/confused-chimp-chimpanzee-monkey.jpg
... that's a tough one. However it happened, from everything I read when he died recently, Bill would have been very grateful to whoever introduced them. But I don't know the answer - how did they meet?
Ironically, we also lost another long-time 'CCO fixture this year who I did know - Steve Cannon. He was (way more than) adequate.
I'm sounding more and more like my old man used to, rambling on about the past.

Give us some details, looking foward to see the development of 2.0.
dc_pilgrim 10-01-09, 03:31 PM Oh-oh fellas, Jeff came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and it looks like he is all out of gum:

oman321 10-01-09, 03:33 PM Very nice, I guess I posted a little to soon. Just before you got to post the pic of it. I started googling planar 1080p and came accross 8120, 8130 & 8150. I figured you went for the 8150. Now, I'm sure you wanna test it out and all but you know what they say, don't keep it up or you'll be replacing the bulb before you know it. Congrats.

Does this mean we can expect a new screen wall as well?
BIGmouthinDC 10-01-09, 03:49 PM Does this mean we can expect a new screen wall as well?
In time of course
I'm thinking of building Wayne Parham's Pi4 speakers as part of the front redo.
Also need a new pre-amp.
queendvd2 10-01-09, 08:15 PM In time? And a complete masking system too to boot I presume!
BritInVA 10-01-09, 08:55 PM I think Tom's ways are migrating to Big :D

Hey Big!
I was just wondering if you were going to get the basic kit for the Pi4's or go with the upgrades? I was looking at these not to long ago.
cheers

I figure if you are going to go to the effort you might as well go full speed. So the upgraded drivers and at least the capacitors.
I'm planning a basic black cabinet with behind the screen lighting (like the Sandman's)
for those following the thread not familiar with the Pi's: Those are 15 inch woofers.

It never ends. I haven't even finished 1.0 and I have my 2.0 list started. The only way I will ever be able to "finish" 1.0 is to define what 1.0 is and list other stuff on the 2.0 list.:D

When are you thinking on starting them?
cheers
BIGmouthinDC 10-03-09, 10:26 PM When are you thinking on starting them?
Right after I finish the shed and a kitchen rebuild at the beach that I've started.
BritInVA 10-04-09, 09:18 AM What about the Steam Shower :D
BIGmouthinDC 10-04-09, 11:36 AM What about the Steam Shower :D
Yes I know, Last week I just missed buying a steam generator on Craig's list by a couple of hours. $1500 new never installed unit for $150.
Somehow with 4 other bathrooms in the house, finishing the one in basement doesn't have a sense of urgency.
BIGmouthinDC 10-04-09, 09:49 PM Back to the Shed....Roof truss factory
First a 1/4 scale drawing of 1/2 of the roof. It is 10 ft 11 inches wide and has a 31.5 height (or 28 to the bottom of the 2x4s)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02756.jpg
take the angle directly from the drawing
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02758.jpg
Set the saw
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02760.jpg
cut
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02764.jpg
check to see if it comes out to the right length Remember the length is the square root of the sum of the squares of the other two sides of the triangle.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02766.jpg
Then figure the filler over the eave using the drawing full scale
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02774.jpg
then a joiner for securing the filler to the truss (they sell metal mending plates but they are a buck each and I have all this scrap lumber so lumber it is)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSC02776.jpg
then the joiner for the peak

Make sure that two only have the joiners on one side because the other side gets sheathed. Also they don't need the cross piece.
smakovits 10-04-09, 11:04 PM those look great. funny, I love math, but never got into engineering. To figure all that out, man, it is beyond me now, I just cant think straight like that. Now I keep buried in a computer. I am glad I hired my shed out, I would have gone mad making those, I guess having the right tools helps too.
I know lowes also now has something where you can order custom trusses, although I have no clue as to pricing.
BIGmouthinDC 10-04-09, 11:45 PM I made jigs and stops for all the repetitive cuts. Basically once it is set up you just load the new piece of wood without measuring and in a few minutes you have 20 of something.

BIGmouthinDC 10-04-09, 11:59 PM As for ordering custom trusses. My DIY cost was $7.06 a truss. Plus scrap lumber and 2 inch galvanized crown staples I already had.
BeerParty 10-05-09, 10:24 AM Hey Big, we need to find you a DIY shed building forum - then you can be famous in three different forums.
Those trusses look good, and thanks for the pictures. I know it takes longer when you have to stop and snap a pic while you are working.

HTGuide - I am pretty sure I have seen Big posting over there, either that or someone over there has absconded with Big's handle...
BIGmouthinDC 10-05-09, 05:29 PM I frequent the HTguide DIY speaker section but haven't posted. I did post some at DBStalk and HiDef forum when I was trying to sort out some sat box issues.

OK, either I'm psychic or you must have mentioned somewhere here in AVS that you frequent the HTGuide DIY speaker section. I would have bet money that I saw postings by you over there on my build thread (http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=32775). Now that I check you don't even your ID registered. :o
