OK another chapter for those following the SHED 2009....RAISING WALLS

Cut a bunch of wood:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1620.jpg

Layout the frame for the back wall and bang it together

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1616.jpg

Skin it with sheathing (it's getting vinyl siding later)

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1623.jpg

Frame the front wall, cover it with at least one sheet of sheathing to make it square

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1629.jpg

Look for some help. BritinVA to the rescue to help stand up the walls and brace them in place. (20 minutes)

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1636.jpg

Laying out the side walls notice position of tape to figure where the 48 and 96 inch studs need to fall

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1649.jpg

Mark up the stud locations and transfer the 48 and 96 marks to the edges.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1651.jpg

bang together the side wall framing

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1658.jpg

Put on a sheet of sheathing between the 48 and 96 marks . Using the top edge and the marks you can square up the wall.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1662.jpg

Cut off the bottom, I'm using a 1 1/2 inch overhang,

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1665.jpg

Assuming it isn't too windy you can stand it up by yourself and clamp it to keep it from falling over.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1668.jpg

repeat and you've got the two side walls up

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1673.jpg

A couple of construction details. I'm using a double top plate and I inter-weaved them in the corners.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1674.jpg

I sheathed right over the window opening to add rigidity during construction to the front wall, I'll cut it out later. I also used a continuous bottom plate that I will cut out later for the double wide door that I've ordered.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1635.jpg

I also intentionally hung the side wall sheathing 1 1/2 inches lower on the side walls so that when I sheath the gable ends I'll have the top of the double top plate to anchor the bottom of the sheathing.

Some nice work - albeit as over engineered as Tom's closet :D

One design flaw is the door should be on other side so you can more easily get your boat onto that lake behind the shed.

Just curious, the 2 sheets you put 48" 96" for the 2 wall, thats just for rigidity for when you stand the up? Just trying to get an understanding on the construction detail. While part of it will be the wall, I would have thought to only add it after the walls are up, if not covering the whole wall before standing them into place.

BIGmouthinDC
10-12-09, 11:29 AM
Adding sheathing before standing up the walls squares up the wall before and keeps it square after it is raised. I sheathed the entire back wall and used one sheet on the other three walls.

Also sheathing while the wall is flat is a lot easier when you are working alone. So all together I put on 6 sheets flat and I'm going to tackle the other 4 sheets today.

If I had a crew of a couple of guys helping I would have totally sheathed ALL the walls before standing them up. It is just easier to position the panels. Working alone the open sections allow you to step through the openings and steady the wall while you are securing it with the clamps.

I waste enough time without creating an opportunity to fish out the window when it is raining.

OK for the rest of you, here is the inside joke.

One day I heard a truck behind my house, I went out and discovered that the county had installed this sign on the "outlot" behind my house that has a storm water retention pond that minimizes downstream flash flooding.

Anyway the thing gets about 24 inches of water maybe 2-3 times a year for 20 minutes.

you mean jump through when it starts tipping too far and you have to jump under the other side before it goes crashing down?;)

I thought you had Brit helping out, or did he bail after one wall? Thats just weak if you ask me.

BIGmouthinDC

No he didn't bail. Saturday he stopped over and we erected the two walls that I had built the day before. Then we went over to the Loganator's to do a couple of items getting him ready for drywalling. Then I built the other two walls on Sunday instead of watching that miserable excuse of a Football team they have in this city.

Update. Yesterday I went to HD to pick up the sheathing I needed to finish the walls and the gable. After I loaded it in my ancient pickup it wouldn't turn over and it wasn't a battery problem. So I called AAA and waited for a tow. I had it towed to my mechanic who happened to be taking the day off. Then took a cab home.

After that I wasn't in the mood to do any shed work.

Today I took stock of what I could get done without the sheathing that is sitting at my mechanic's and decided to put up the trusses and cut the hole for the window.

What type of ventilation are you planning? Ridge vent?

I picked up 3 of these ( the 18 inchers) on Ebay. Do you think it will be enough? I also looked at the various ridge vent systems but I don't think I need both.

http://www.duraflo.com/specs/images/ShedLightVent.jpg

I found one resource that has a guideline of roughly one square inch of free air space for every square foot of attic space. I assume that the same guidelines would apply to a shed.

I was also wondering if I should put a screened vent on the floor so I get some air flow bottom to top. It will stay pretty cool under the shed.

Probably enough ventilation. Not a lot of light but the double doors should help with that.

I was thinking low on a wall on the shady side (against the garage in my case) but the floor would probably work as well. Also depends if you will have vented soffits.

Because mine will be in more sun and I will have electric lights I am considering large gable vents on both sides instead of roof vents.

Big,
Your shed's looking good. Nice thing about sheds/barns is they tend to get finished a LOT faster than HT's. I build mine in 2005 (14' x 20'), pictures below. It's just sitting on 4" x 6" PT runners on a gravel base. Haven't had any issues with settling, heaving etc. The single ridge vent keeps things cool enough, and haven't had any issues with enough light inside (with both doors open), even with it being North facing. If I were to build it again, I would have put 2 layers of 3/4 OSB on the floor as I'm getting some sagging where I park my ATV. Still may add another layer at some point.

I had a 4' ridge vent on my 8'x12' and it was just fine. I was limited to 4' due to the hip roof. Air came in under the soffets and out through the ridge vent. I never noticed any excess heat in there, even during the hot Carolina summers.

Good looking shed Floyd. I see those trees giving that roof the evil eye and right now they are deciding which one of them is going to split it in half. The tree with the birdhouse is collecting bets from the others on which tree will get the job done.

fotto
10-14-09, 01:46 PM
Thanks. Funny you should mention the trees...the leaning tree you see behind the right rear corner lost a rather large branch 2 years ago that landed right on the peak of the roof, between two of the trusses. I had to replace a section of sheathing, shingles and now have a nicely bent ridge vent. I guess that's the one who won (for now):(

BIGmouthinDC, I have noticed your thoughts, comments & references through many of the threads & I was wondering if you could point me in the best direction to my following questions...

1. I'm almost finished with my framing & I will soon start with the electrical. Is there a minimum spec for the number of outlets, amperage, etc. I know that the equipment to be used will probably dictate what will be required, but that leads me into my next question...

2. Where can I go to determine the equipment I will need for my a theater? I know I have left this question very open, but it seems the more I read in some of these equipement threads, the more confused I become. It appears that each thread is a bunch of comments of "my equipment is better than than yours." Maybe its just the few I have picked to read, but I still seem to be unsure to select a correct setup.

3. What is the difference or benefit of a 2:35 vs 16:9. From some of the threads I have seen, there seems to be a loss of lumens or detail by making this switch.

Thanks

Room outlets are required by code every so many feet along the wall, basically no matter where you might put something along the wall that you will be able to plug it in with a 6 ft cord. One 15 amp circuit for the receptacles that you will will never use (except for running the vacuum) will be fine for the HT room. There is a little more here in our counties basement finishing guide see pages 9 and 10:

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/publications/basements/details.pdf

As for the Equipment stack area, 2 dedicated 20 amp circuits is the standard overkill one size fits all recommendation. You will probably only need one. You also need to plan how to power the projector and whether you want to condition the power. There are 100s of threads addressing this topic. Search on "projector outlet" Lastly you need to plan for lighting circuits and they should be separate from every thing already mentioned. Don't forget step lights in the riser on a dimmer.

Equipment. Big topic basically it helps to have a budget then do research in your price range. A good starter projector would be the Panasonic 4000 shipping sometime after you finish the room. Less than $1999. (This projector deserves a 2.35 screen)

2.35 versus 16:9, for this you need to go up to the CIH forum and read the stickies. I have 16:9 but I have plans to switch because watching letter-boxed movies on my screen is too small. If I were to get a bigger 16:9 screen so that letter boxed movies were bigger than 16:9 material would be too big. IMHO The best solution is a screen with automatic masking. There are many here who make their own screens with masking The Flaming Oak build thread is an excellent example. This will get you started in your research:

Agreed, the new Panasonic is shaping up to be a terrific buy and should go hand in hand with a 2:35:1 screen due to its memory lens setting.

What ever happened with the truck?

Last week was a total bust for outside construction. Not only did my truck crap out, but it practically rained non stop for 5 days.

OK, the truck needed a new starter, seems 18 years was all it had to give.

This week I've made some progress. Got all the remaining sheathing on, the double wide metal door installed and one of the two end gables cut and installed. I would have the other but the bottom sheet of board in my pickup took on too much water to be used.

Tomorrow, the other gable and hopefully the roof sheathing, then I've got to get the drip edge, tar paper, shingles and skylights on. Hopefully all that by the end of the week if the weather cooperates. Next week vinyl siding.

Who said there wouldn't be pictures?

Door, The WAF was for a real door, not something made by the shed builder that you see on so many sheds. So we ordered a double wide metal covered 6 panel door that matches the other doors on our house. It sat under a tarp for several days as it rained. Finally it stopped raining and I called over the neighbor for 15 minutes to help me lift it into place. The door has a composite wood frame and came with an attached brick molding also composite. The door will probably last longer than the shed builder.

So here is the door in place from the outside

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1701.jpg

Inside, screwed in place at the hinge locations, I also tried out some new composite shims and I really liked them. Notice that you attach the out-
swing door on the inside. So once you set it in place it's a good idea to have a way of getting to the inside without opening the door which comes shipped with a spacer between the two door edges which helps during the installation. So leave off at least one section of sheathing.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1702.jpg

Sheathing, just one little trick to working alone and getting the panels lined up: It is pretty hard to hold a 4x8 sheet in place with your left hand and hold a pneumatic Nailer in your right. With a block on the one corner it makes it possible.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1704.jpg

OK, need to put sheathing on the gables. I figured it would be a lot easier to do flat rather than up on the shed. So first I traced what piece I needed

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1706.jpg

Cut it out and attached it, then traced the remaining piece.

Big,

What kind of price were you able to get on the door (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm in the planning stages and trying to decide between a double door like this or a roll up style door. I have found some roll up style doors for about $250, seems to be about half of what I was quoted for a double door.

It is a Therma-Tru, tradition line and was $471.58 plus tax. MSRP for the door, the rot resistant jamb, the bumper threshold and pre-drilling the door was $639.

I thought so. I got prices starting at $535, but that was for a standard wood jamb (who wants that anymore?). That is about half of what my last shed cost to build. :(

There seems to be a very high correlation between HT builders and Shed builders.
I think its because our wives make us build it after putting up with us while we build our "theaters", we do it but build it as if someday we may be living in it! :)

My initial reaction was influenced by the reviews and the test results of Tom Huffman, (my actual machine) so part of what I saw might be Psychological.

When I fired it up, the image was good and sharp and the colors seemed much more natural. Maybe it was because I was expecting it, but anyway I am happy. Like many you can ponder whether you made the right decision such as should I have waited and just went with the new Panasonic at about a quarter of what I will have invested to get this projector fully implemented. Or how about the new Infocus coming out. Then there is the RS35. It's maddening.

This is a handheld shot, a little more blurry than the actual and the yellowish tint was as filmed . Anyway another serving of Megan Fox over metal, Michael Bay's homage to the looking under the hood picture from Transformers I.

Hopefully nothing. That original screen material was tested/recommended using older 720p projectors. I don't recall seeing any tests of that particular material used with the newer 1080i/p projectors. It's possible (notice I said "possible") that the weave of that material and the pixel size of a 1080 projector MAY (notice I said, MAY) not work as well. Rueben HAS identified material that he HAS tested with 1080 projectors. The problem is the manufacturers figured out what he was using their material for, raised the price substatntially and then started to market it as "screen material."

I've seen some prices of manufactured AT screens coming down, so the DIY aspect/cost savings of it may not be there any longer.

I didn't get in right away on the SMX material. I got in when he was not allowed to sell it for DIY, then had a small opening where he could sell it again, before closeing it to DIY for good. That is when I jumped in.

tlogan6797
10-29-09, 04:12 PM
Same here. I don't think it was that he wasn't ALLOWED to sell it for DIY, but that he converted over to a true business model making screens. It was a somewhat sudden announcemnt, a lot of guys said if they had known they woud have purchased, so a small window opened up for people who had expressed an interest earlier.

Chiahead
10-29-09, 04:15 PM
I thought I had heard some of his distributors he wanted to sell through would not accept his stuff if he undersold them and just sold the material himself to us lowely DIYers. So before that contract was finalized he had one last opportunity for us.

I have to agree with you on this Big. If I were building my screen today I would be using Seymour's XD. If I ever upgrade my projector to a 1080P model I will swap out my screen material for it. When I built my screen I used a screen spline which will allow me to easily swap it out.

I'd rate shingling right up there "in the miserable jobs" category along with being a mason tender. I worked on a 3 person crew one summer in my college years. We did a strip mall roof and the day consisted of getting there, climbing on the roof, putting down 40 square of shingles, then go home. A solid week and a half or so of that put me off pursuing it as a career:rolleyes:

BIGmouthinDC
11-11-09, 12:03 AM
It's not the shingling that is the hassle. For the shed sized roof, half the job you are standing on a ladder. Then the rest you have to go up on the roof, In my younger days I could probably just jump off the thing without even thinking about it. At my age if I were to slip off the edge I would probably break a bone in my foot/ankle. Then there is the fact that I have some overhanging branches. Just makes me cautious.

Too funny, actually it wasn't until very late in the parade that we found a secret path to the street that wasn't blocked by the police by going through a restaurant that had a back and front door. The shot I took was about the only player we were actually close enough to see.

We did however see four of the players at the taping of Letterman on Thursday.

From what I could tell from my previous far distant viewing position the parade was all about creating an opportunity for all the season ticket holders, politicians, Press, groundskeepers, and their cousins to ride in a ticker-tape parade. It seemed that the ratio of people of interest to people in the parade was less than 1 in 100.

We really didn't have an interest in the team only in seeing the spectacle, similar to the inauguration we went to.

i promised a status report of my not quite done ht1.0 what remains is a wall treatment above the back bar and under the marquee. Then i intend to do a custom back lit poster for the wall next to the stairway.

If you have a sharp eye you will note that i repainted the third row back bar and redid all the trim molding to lighten it up. My original paint was too dark and you couldn't even see the bar stools sitting in front because there was no contrast.
Anyway here are some shots i took this evening:

finish a little detail work on the soffit corners,

build the ramp/landing
move crap in.

BIG, this may seem like a dumb question but with the shed being so big and so nicely constructed do you have to worry about water (i.e. gutters) or is that a non-issue since yours is elevated?

I didn't put gutters on my last shed and the lower foot or so of the shed was always dirty from water splashing on the mulch. My new shed will be getting gutters and a 4" corrugated pipe to take the water to the ditch behind my yard. Or I may install a small rain barrel and use the runoff to water some plants in the backyard.

BIG, I love the idea of a third row counter with stools. Do you know how far it is from your screen wall to the back of the stools? I will probably have 25' between my screen wall and my back wall. Trying to come up with my layout at the moment.

BIGmouthinDC
11-26-09, 11:26 AM
The front of the bar is about 18 ft from the screen. Then you need the width of the bar top and then room for seating. My riser is 6ft 8 inches deep. With your 2 ft deep screen wall It would give you 5 ft for bar and seating which would be doable but tight. This is where building your theater 12 inches longer might make all the difference.

Putting a back bar inside a well soundproofed room does not affect the soundproofing. You just need the room.

I was thinking about a third row sit at bar when I first answered. It you are talking about a wet bar at the back of the room the only thing you have to worry about is treating the wall penetrations so that sound doesn't leak out the holes you drill for plumbing connections. Did I do it?, no, can you hear the theater upstairs?, yes.

On the refrigerator if it ended up being too much of a problem I would put a wall switch in a convenient location (near the door) to cut the power to the Refrigerator during critical listening events. You just gotta remember to turn it back on that's why putting it somewhere where you can see it on the way out would be a good idea. I imagine some kind of a delay switch might help the truly absent minded.

I think I would have to a have a 3' toggle switch that would close off my stairwell in the off position. In order to get up the steps you would need to open the "gate".

OK, for the Shed Heads I owe some details on the Vinyl siding. So basically you start with a Naked OSB skinned shed. (no house wrap was used, it's only a shed)

First you put on the corner and J channels.

I like jigs rather than repeated measurements. So here is a 4x4 inch jig for the outside corners.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2130.jpg

Then you use the jig and draw some lines 4 inches in from the edges of all the corners.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2129.jpg

Bang up the corner wrap and integrated channel, you use special nails and you leave them 1/8 shy of tight so the stuff can expand.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2133.jpg

Now you need to put on the starter strips on the very bottom.

another jig

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2134.jpg

Hold it on the bottom frame

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2135.jpg

hold up the starter and bang in place

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2137.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2140.jpg

Now cut a piece of siding to fit with a little room for expansion on both ends:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2141.jpg

It hooks on the bottom starter strip and you bang it up:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2143.jpg

here is a shot of the hook on the bottom of the siding, see the hook,

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2145.jpg

you bring it up to the first row below final position and lift up, it will snap in place and actually hang there without nails. but you do nail it.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2146.jpg

Then just repeat a number of times going up the wall

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2147.jpg

On the gables there is a J channel nailed in place

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1804.jpg

just one other small detail is you need to extend the corner pieces with j channel for a little bit on the corners.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF1791.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2118.jpg

At the top of the wall they sell a Finishing strip that goes inside the J channel nailed at the top and it holds the top edge of the siding,

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/SHED/DSCF2121.jpg

I don't seem to have any pictures of the J channel around the door and windows but I'll add that when I go out to paint the trim, add the front ramp and finish a few minor cosmetic issues this spring.

One tip for anyone not as careful as Big was in leveling the shed....I guess these are not as critical in new builds, but when siding older buildings that are not as square and plumb as Big's.

You need to level that starter strip or by the time you get 5 or 6 courses up the wall you will be surprisingly off kilter. Trust me, I did this for a summer and learned really fast about that.

OK, TWO tips...

If two people are hanging siding (especially vinyl) you have to be careful that they hang it with the same touch. When attaching a row and snapping it in at the bottom, you need to let it hang there when you start to nail it in. It's pretty easy to "lift" it and get out of alignment, First thing you know, the corners of the two walls don't meet.

OK, THREE tips....

Those corner channels need to be plumb or you ruin into the same alignment issues.

Looks great Big!

Hey Big,

Great looking theater!

Quick question....do you have any lighting/screen brightness issues with the bar lighting and theater in the same room? Does that have anything to do with why your bar is offset from the screen?

Thanks

BIGmouthinDC

Hey, thanks.

The third row sit at bar is aligned with the screen, the Arboroak Cinema Bar (ACB) is where it is because my basement is odd shaped.

not 100%. This weekend I put on a ramp. Still need to do a little cosmetic fix on the eaves, paint and put down some more crushed stone around the perimeter.

Shot from 5 minutes ago out my office window. It turned cold, wet and a little nasty to do much outside so I'm working on my taxes.

I'm not quite done yet either, but it is functional. Still have some caulking to do, underside of the soffits and cut the last piece of my ramp, then finally go through and organize everything.

Organize? just use the LIFO method.

If I did that I would be mowing the lawn with the kids bubble mower! :p

Depends on the task. Then I choose LIFO or FIFO. Whichever is easiest? :p

Good thing you have the backups, at least that data isn't gone, but the reinstalling sure is a serious PITA.

I do video editing, and on my main box if I have to reinstall every app and get the system back to running just right it takes days... thankfully I've only had to do that once.

For BIG and the other guys with nice sheds, do you use a plow on a mower? I've been wanting to build a shed for the last few Summers, and the itch is starting again. The main large item to put in the shed would be the riding mower. However, I use the plow attachment on the mower for the driveway, and so I would have to store the mower in the garage anyway all Winter long... anyone go through that issue?

I had the mower, snow blower and everything else in the garage before the shed was completed. Keeping the Snow blower in the garage for those few months is not an issue.

On the nights before a big one I even park it facing out right inside the door.

I don't have the snow problems. On the rare occasion that we get snow it is gone in a day or two tops. I just have a 36" walk behind and it fits nicely in my 10x12 that I just built. Plenty of room to walk around it and still get to everything.

Ok, now I have shed envy. :(

It is already going into Wednesday of my week off and the Landscaping is kicking my rear. So much for the shed. Looks like it is going to have to be another drawn out project on nights and weekends.

Very nice! What did the finished dimensions end up being?

I am within a season or two of having to build a shed as well. Hopefully that build will go much faster than my theater!

So does this mean you will get to changing your screen?

Yup this weekend I actually did all the necessary FINAL testing to verify screen size, exact projector mount location and experimented to see how much pin cushion to expect (luckily not much) so next step is the get the projector on the ceiling.

The framing is right at 10x12. I never measured the roof peak height. This works out great in using up full sheets of materials.

Your theater is beautiful and Classy Great Work on your basement. I love to see when people sketch pencil drawings and see it come together. well done

what did you use under the ramp to bring it level like that? I need to raise mine and get it level to the door, but cant figure out the best solution, yours looks very nice

I basically built a "riser frame", attached the first deck board then put some bricks and scraps of wood under the edge next to the door until it was snug under the door threshold. then I ran about a dozen deck screws through the step platform frame and the shed perimeter floor joist. I also put scrap bricks and crushed stone under the rest of the platform frame riser. My yard is sloped up from the front of the shed so the platform is basically built into the hill but does slope down a bit from the door.

I plan to put down some more crushed stone where you see dirt in foreground.

Update: HT 2.0 for 2010 is now in full gear as I have placed an order for an SMX 2.37 screen.

Big sale going on so I pulled the trigger:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1247268

While I have been assembling all the gear I really haven't done much in the way of installing it or remodeling the front end. Well that has changed. Just a recap, previously I bought a Dealer demo Planar 8150, then added the Panamorph lens kit on a manual slide, Yesterday I ordered the screen and placed a Monoprice order for a bunch of cables to put in the wall/ceiling. So now everything for the video side of my update is in the pipeline.

Last night I took down my old mount so that I can hang my new projector in the right location and had to keep asking myself "why did I glue the plywood mounting plate to the drywall?", big mess to patch. Stay tuned. Pictorial review to follow.

Looking forward to the progress pics. What size screen did you end up ordering. Seems as though you got a pretty good deal on the screen, good prices if you can take advantage right now.

Keep us posted. Are you changing anything cosmetically or mostly just gear? I don't know if you remember me saying, but it was your theater/color scheme that inspired my color selections. So if you are changing I might be forced to change my plans as well ;)

Thanks RTROSE, don't worry no color changes planned.

Here is the plan, I'm keeping the same screen height as my 100 inch diagonal but going to 2.37. That means 49x116. My prime seating is right at 11 ft so that means sitting at 2.69 image height 1.14 width. Second row will be at 4.28

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/allscope.jpg

As for other changes all my false wall framing between the swing open columns and black GOM panels will need to be reworked. I also anticipate swapping out my speakers for some new DIYs and I do need a new Pre-Pro like the Integra 80.1. Also thinking about an Itouch/Ipad remote system. Step one is to get the video component reworked and functional.

I have a room similar in width to yours, with primary seating at 12 feet. I have the exact same size 2.35:1 screen (49x116), made out of DIY seymour AV material, paired with a Panasonic AE4000. Love it. Mind you this is my first home theater build (in progress - I really do need to start a thread), but I think the size is perfect.

FYI, your build was very inspirational in many aspects of my own build, including the screen size and comment of the future switch to 2.35:1. Thank you for the time posting all of the info. Mine won't be nearly as beautiful or intricate, but very much functional and nice looking - once it's finished!

I used the same stripped down false wall framing scheme you used and it's working great. I have verticals behind the screen at the "thirds", and even with the AT screen you can't see them at all - so I wouldn't (didn't) hesitate to do that.

Of note, I broke the golden rule of putting in a projector before it was otherwise finished. On the up side, I was able to confirm my screen size before building the false wall, but on the down side, it is taking me much longer to get things done now...

Best,
Christopher

That certainly is tempting.....I'm at 10' to the first row now and would have to move the screen forward 12" to get my speakers behind the screen....I'm thinking 120" wide 2:37. My current screen is 105" wide 16:9. Man, I just finished my 30X40X12 shop and I do need stuff in there..... Stop it Biggie... You know how compulsive I am.
