View Full Version : Any experience with Sony HT-7000DH?
I was in Costco today and noticed the Sony HT-7550 HTIB (receiver, 5-disc and 5 speakers plus sub) at $500. The thing that really caught my eye was the receiver had two HDMI inputs and one output. I recently purchased a projector and figured I'd ultimately have to purchase a HDMI splitter if I ever upgrade to HD DirecTV, so having a receiver that is designed for home theatres seems to be a plus.
I tried to research information on the HT-7550, but that might be exclusive to Costco, because the closest I could find is the HT-7000DH, with the best price $420 after a rebate at Circuit City.
Does anybody have any experience with either of these units? I've done a quick search here and couldn't find anything, although I noticed most people suggest buying individual pieces rather than a HTIB. I'd be willing to buy the receiver separately, but I can't find any model numbers, so I'd most likely have to buy the combo.
Any opinions?

We have them on display at work. Best Buy. good sound for the price, & suports HDMI..
mtndave 07-05-06, 06:42 PM Also saw this today at Costco.
The DVD player is a DVP-NC85h - the manual is online.
The receiver is a STR-K700D - could not find online manual.
I am also interested in more info.
I bought the Sony HT7000DH back a few months ago and it's working fine.
gmorgan715 07-16-06, 04:08 AM ... and it seems to be the 7000 stystem inside a larger box with a bonus of two speaker stands for the front speakers.
BTW, I set it up tonight, but the two surround speakers do not produce sound, even though the display shows them as active. Any suggestions?

bakingintheoc 07-29-06, 10:56 AM I saw the same system at Costco.
There is an amazon marketplace item at:
(newbies cant enter yooRLs) - search sony ht at amazon and you will see the ht 7550 item :)
The product features agree with those mentioned earlier for the HT7000DH
"5 Disc DVD/CD Player with 5.1 Channel Home Theater System
900 Watts Power (140W x 5 + 200W Subwoofer at 1KHz, <10% THD)
DVD Player with HDMI Output and AV Receiver with HDMI Pass-through (2 IN, 1 OUT)
XM Connect & Play Ready (AV receiver) - DTS, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding (AV Receiver)
System includes - STR-K7000 Receiver, DVP-NC85H DVD/CD Player, SS-MSP7000 Front Speakers, SS-CNP900 Center Speaker, SS-SRP7000 Surround Speakers, SA-WP780 Sub Woofer "
I also remember seeing the included speaker stands at Costco.
Anyone know how the HT7000DH would compare against other systems in this price range (say $500-800)?
I saw an earlier discussion of a system such as the SLS QG5000. How would they compare?
Are Sony receivers decent relative to the Onkyos mentioned?
is there a comparable Onkyo system to consider?
The room I have is about 20 x 18.
Thanks for some newbie advice!
IWishUWell 08-02-06, 11:08 AM Can anyone recommend a good site to order the XM Antenna?
Mark
IWishUWell 08-02-06, 11:09 AM The forum will not allow me as a newbie to use URLs so I'll say it this way. Go to RiverPark 'dot' com and search their site for HT7000DH. It will provide a link to the Owner's Manual and the Product information - both as PDF files.

i just bought one at BB, $10 more than at Costco (I didn't need the stands) and got a $50 gift card, plus got $15 toward their club card. I'll have it set up by the weekend (I hope).
Here's a CNET review:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_HT_7000DH/4505-6462_7-31761898.html
I was in the market for an upscale DVD, and a multiple HDMI reciever (DVD & STB), this seemed to fit the bill.
has anyone figured out which code to use to enable a TiVo DirecTV remote to control volume/remote on the Sony receiver? The suggestions in the TiVo didn't work.
Do a Google or Yahoo search on "Sony AV1 AV2" (I cannot post the link to Remote Central because I do not have enough posts yet on AVS forum).
You need to change the receiver's codeset to AV1 so that it will work with the Tivo remote control. However, I believe the remote control that comes with your unit cannot be set to use AV1 so your Sony remote will no longer control the receiver. You will have to get up to trun on/off the receiver. A good universal remote will solve this problem and will be more programmable. If you try this and figure out a way to get the remote to work with AV1, let me know.

I ended up getting a Harmony 880, works fine with everything.
woodinville dave 09-09-06, 11:00 PM I too am interested in this home theatre set. Does anyone have any experience with it? They have only a floor model left at my Costco and I'm wondering if it is worth $500.

temeone 09-09-06, 11:52 PM I'm surprised there is a HTIB with HDMI capable receiver. The least expensive receiver with HDMI I have seen previously was the Onkyo 604 at msrp $500, available for closer to $400 if you look. this leads me to believe the speakers included in the sony system arn't the greatest. however, if the receiver is of good quality, then you can always upgrade the speakers in the future if you grow tired.
You will surely be able to piece together a 5.1 system for $500 that will surpass the sound quality of the sony HTIB, but definitely NOT with HDMI capable receiver.
woodinville dave 09-10-06, 11:32 PM Well I picked it up today at Circuit City for cheaper than Costco and it was new in the box. I'll report back how it works from the perspective of a newb.
-Dave
I also just got this system. Used my VISA score card points and got it free. I like all of the inputs so I can hook up other components and the HDMI switcher so you can connect the DVD and a HDMI cable box into it and have a single HDMI output for the TV. I haven't finished hooking it up and calibrating it yet . The surround speakers have hooks on them so you can put a screw in the wall to hang them on. The fronts do not so you need to buy stands or screw in wall mounts.
has anyone been able to get the self-calibration tool to work? Every time I run it I get an error 20 which according to the manual means that the microphone can't hear a speaker, it appears to be the surround right speaker that causes the error, but there is a loud test tone coming from it.

the costco one comes with front speaker stands, that appears to be the only difference.
woodinville dave 09-16-06, 03:13 AM OK, so I setup the system tonight and I have a few observations and an issue to report.
observations
1) the are a lot of things to connect!
2) hooking the speaker wires to the back of the receiver is a pain. hooking them up to the speakers is easy. Why are they twist on in back of the receiver and easy clip in on the speakers.
3) Playing a CD sounds awesome with optical input.
4) playing audio from the cable box from optical sounds good too.
5) the manual has a ton of info to read, my head is still spinning
now the problem
1) When I play a dvd through hdmi, and coaxial input I don't get surround sound I get center, L, and R. When I play TV I get surround sound from the back speakers. I turned on DTS but I get no surround
Anyone else have this issue?
-Dave
woodinville dave 09-16-06, 07:10 PM Does anyone know what could be going on?

woodinville dave 09-17-06, 01:10 AM nevermind, it now works. I must have enabled it through the DVD menu.
Sounds great, right out of the box.

arni0202 09-19-06, 12:03 AM Can somone explain how to set up all the Component and HDMI connections? I want to run my Playstation 2 in 480P but it won't let me because I'm using S-video straight from the PS2 to the TV (and the receiver doesn't have S-video) my Samsung 40" LCD only has one Component IN but had two HDMI inputs.... :( and the one component input is being used by the DVD player. should I buy the PS2 component cables and then run the components from the DVD player to the Receiver and the PS2 to the Receiver as well? ALSO can I get Audio from the receiver if I plug an HDMI cable straight from the DVD player to the TV? since I have a coaxial DVD cable set up? It's all a little overwhelming but I think I can figure it out with some help. If I have to buy any more cables I'd be willing to. Right now I have one set of component cables, a digital optical cable, and a coaxial cable. not to mention a few regular Red White and Yellows. anyone help? please?
Ran the auto calibration last night. Worked fine. Personally I think the center channel is a little loud but I need to try it on a few more shows still.
Since my TV only has one HDMI input I got two more HDMI cables so I can plug the DVD player and cable box into the receiver's HDMI switcher and then use the out to go to the TV. Couldn't get it to work, will need to play with it some more.
Don't overpay for cables, I get mine here.

Why don't you use the HDMI output from the DVD player with a coaxial output. That way the audio goes through the reciever and to the TV. Just turn the TV audio down and the receiver up :-)
Regarding the component video switching, I haven't used the switching so I can't help yet. The receiver has more than one component input I would get the PS2 to component cables.

BrainofJDH 09-20-06, 07:21 PM Can someone with this system tell me about the speaker terminals on the receiver and speakers? Clips? Banana Plug Compatable?
I'm getting this system and already have quality speaker wire in my room....just wanted to know if I needed banana plugs.
Thanks.
BrainofJDH 09-20-06, 07:55 PM Also does the DVD player have a digital coax or digital optical audio outputs? Or both?
The DVD player has digital optical audio and HDMI. The receiver has screw plugs (are those banana plugs) and the speakers have push clips.

Ok, I have an issue with the same Amp. I have STR-k7000 and hooked up the HDMI cable to the DVD player and I am not getting any sound. I get picture, but no sounds. HDMI is suppose to pass both. Is anyone else having this problem.

The HDMI on this amp only passes the audio through, it doesn't send it into the amp. To get audio, you must connect the digital audio cable as well. I don't know why that is.
Does anybody knows if this is the same as the Sony HT-DDW900 but without the DVD player ? I saw it for $298. at my local electronics store and I already have an upscaling DVD player. I just want to know if this is a good system for an small room, mainly to play video games and watch movies.
You can compare the systems here

They are very similar but not completely the same.
RayYork 12-11-06, 03:02 AM My current TV does not have an HDMI input. Does this make HDMI inoperable in this system? No matter what I do (even getting a new system) I cannot get the HDMI connection between the DVD and the receiver to work. I'm trying to go DVD - Receiver (via HDMI) - 1080i TV (via component). Doable?
Another question, how do I use the built in upscaling?
I think the HDMI inputs/outputs are a switcher only. So I don't think the setup you want will work. I find the manual for this system piss poor, and the online stuff isn't much better.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-faq.pl?mdl=HT7000DH&LOC=3#
You won't get upscaling unless the TV has HDMI. I ran the DVD through the receiver and to my TV via HDMI and the upscaling worked fine. I can't get the receiver to get any sound over HDMI though.
RayYork 12-11-06, 09:09 PM Thanks Remy. I am getting a Vizio P50 Plasma and am moving soon so I'll just have to wait until the house is done to get all of this stuff to work together I guess. It's killing me but I'll have to wait :(
new house and a new home theater at the same time; my wife is going to be busy unpacking without me ;)
Routeboy 12-13-06, 11:32 AM I have the HT-7550DH and it works fantastic. In regard to the HT-7000 and HT-7550, the HT-7000 and Ht-7550 are the exact same system except the 7550 has a 5 disc DVD player, the 7000 a single tray. Also i almost threw my speaker stands away because the system comes in a big box that's inside of a bigger box and the stands are between them in the bottom.I have Dish Network HD satellite service and at first i was just getting 2.1 sound.I read the owners manual for the new VIP211 satellite receiver and found out i had to purchase a Fiber Optic Cable to run between the sat.receiver and the Sony STR-K7000 receiver to get full 5:1 Dolby Surround sound from the satellite system.I got a Monster brand off Ebay dirt cheap installled it and now the system rocks.

At first my system did the same thing. I spoke with Sony and they said to connect a coaxial audio cable between the Coaxial Audio Out on the DVD player and the DVD Coaxial In on the back of the STR-K7000.After that it works great.I was under the assumption that digital video and audio traveled through the HDMI cable also but they said in some case's just the video goes through.

You can do the HDMI cable from the DVD to the receiver for the DVD video but you'll also have to get a coaxil (orange)audio cable and run from the Coaxial audio out on the DVD to the DVD Coaxial Audio in on the receiver..If your tv is non HDMI i'd use the component cables Red,Green, and Blue from the receiver to the tv for video and an orange coaxial audio cable from your receiver to you tv..But if you've got the TV speakers turned off all you should need is the Red, Green, and Blue component cables to get the video to the TV, the audio will be supplied by you receiver. The upscaling should be automatic. When you set up your DVD it ask you what type and format you tv is.Also if you have HD satellite, i've got a new Dish Network VIP211 connected everything and only received 2:1 sound. I read the satellite owners manual and found i had to get a fiber optic cable to connect between the satellite receiver and the STR-K7000 Sony receiver..After that the system shakes the walls.

I purchaed the above HT-7550DH system and it works great once i figured everything out. Gone are the days of red and white audio and yellow video connections. The only difference between the HT-7000 and HT-7550 the 7550 comes with a 5 disc DVD the 7000 a singl tray DVD everything else is the same.I opted for buying individual components instead of a HTIB a long time ago and learnt my leason. I'll never buy nothing else but the HTIB's.

I don't know if you're talking about the Sony STR-K7000 receiver or not. But if you've got an audio receiver you're useing for surround sound the cables from your DVD player should be plugged into the receiver not the component inputs on your TV, which leaves them open for your PS2.Also does you tv have any front inputs???If you've got the Sony HT-7000/7550 DH system you have to run a HDMI cable from your DVD to the receiver and an Orange Coaxial cable from your DVD to DVD Coaxila Audio IN on the back of the receiver.I was under the assumption that the HDMI cable carried the video and audio.I contacted Sony and they said on the DVD player it didn't to add the coaxial Audio Cable, i did any everything works great.
I bought it last night at Best Buy.
I'm still trying to figure out what the button combination is to get audio out of my Sharp LC-32D4OU HDTV
into a LG RC199H DVD player
then into the Sony HT7000DH (no speaker stands)
I'm using HDMI cables
do I need red/ white audio wires
Suround works as does FM 5.1 ... just no tv audio
Thanks for any ideas,
dennis in Sacramento
For some reason HDMI does not pass sound to the Sony unit. Use Coax or optical audio as your first choice, red white as last resort.
jhnnytn 12-30-06, 02:03 PM Got the HT-7000DH from Costco earlier in the week and have been trying to make it work. Got the DVD player and Dish HD DVR (Video 2) hooked up via the HDMI cords and then out from there to my TV via the HDMI monitor out. I read up on this forum and found that I had to hook up the digital coaxial cable for the DVD audio and a optical cable for the Dish Audio because the HT-7000DH doesn’t send audio thru the HDMI. So thanks. The problems I am running into are the following:
1. In hooking up my XBOX 360 with optical for audio and component cables for video. I can’t get the video to work. I am plugging the optical into the Video 1 input and I have went thru the AMP MENU to assign the Video 2 component inputs to Video 1. I get sound but no picture. And I have tried plugged the component cables directly into the TV and it works fine so it isn’t the XBOX. Please help.
2. I also have an old VCR and thought I might as well hook it up, but can’t find anywhere to hook it up with traditional L&R audio and video RCA cables. I can’t do this cause all the inputs with RCA cables have been used with higher end connections: Video1 (XBOX 360) Video 2 (DISH DVR) and DVD. I don’t think the RCA’s are not assignable.
3. My Dish Network HD DVR remote does not have the code to control the Sony HT-7000DH. Any Ideas? Besides a pricey universal remote.
2richaudiovideo 01-01-07, 01:32 AM I have 2 questions about Sony HT 7000DH for u guys who have one before I go buy one. 1, Will I be able to play home recorded CDs/DVDs on the DVD player? My old sony DVD is very particular and would not play a buddy's band demo CD nor music burned by my computer's DVD burner. 2, Can I plug and play an ipod (If not, what is required to play an ipod thru it?). Thanks.

I've played several home-made CD's (not MP3 format, regular CD audio) that I made, I've also been able to play DVD's I've made. In both cases I've used Apple's programs to create the media (iTunes and iDVD).
WRT to the iPod, I bought a cable that connects the speaker jack on my iPod with the RCA jacks for the tape player on the Sony receiver. It works fine.

I can't help you with the XBOX, but I hooked my VCR directly to my TV and bypassed the receiver, the only VHS tapes we have left are kids stuff that we hardly watch.
I ended up getting a Harmony remote which works great with everything.

I think it is because you are trying to force the components to video2, which is already used by your HDMI from your STB. Try it with the cables in video1 and NOT assigning it
rocksalt 01-03-07, 11:13 AM Hi all. New here. Was looking to get some advice on purchasing a HTIB and bought this setup.
I bought this setup and set it up the same day. I used mostly component cables and it was a cluster fudge! I found that using the reciever for video is worthless. Especially if you want to 'teach' the significant other how to use it. The settings are mind boggling!!! I had it initially setup with component out from the reciever to the TV and DVD and cable in to the reciever. When I switched back to cable the TV would say 'unsupported resolution' and go blank. I had to switch off the TV and back on to get the cable signal back on. There must be some sort of time out on the TV that stops looking at the signal once it lost.
Frustrated I stopped for the night and came up with another solution...
I bought 1 HDMI cable from Sams(22.00). I bought 2 fibre optic cables(11.50ea.).
I connected the cable box through component video to the TV
I connected the cable box's audio via Optical to the video 1 optical on the reciever
I connected the cable box's red/white to the TV
This setup enables my wife to turn on the TV and the cable box and use the TV's speakers for sound. (she cares less how it sounds). If she wants to use the reciever all she has to do is turn it on and select 'video 1' and wella.
Now for the DVD player. Throw that orange cable away.
Connect the HDMI cable to the DVD and to the TV
Connect the optical cable to the DVD and to the 'video 2' optical port on the reciever.
All you need to make it work is switch the TV's input to HDMI and select 'video 2' on the reciever for the audio.
What makes this system a PITA is the fact that the video inputs are not converted to 1 output. If you have component in on the reciever you need component out. HDMI in, HDMI out. Reason I didn't use the reciever to take ANY video in. It just complicates it. The reciever is not upscaling as far as I know. It's all done in the DVD player. I also read that this DVD player will not upscale copyrighted DVD's.
If you are going to use copied DVD's make sure you use "UDF/ISO" mode when burning and check the box in NERO to 'force compatibility mode for X-box'. Then all the movies will work on even a crappy DVD player.
THIS RECIEVER GET's HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cooking eggs on it right now!
Oh yea, don't forget you can change the levels internally in the reciever and tell it what the distance of the speakers is to the listener. If center is to loud or quiet, change the levels!
For years I have been using the DVD player from my computer to play the DVD's to the TV. I have a 5.1 system in the computer. I am getting upscaled DVD's to TV via PCVGA. Worked great. Problem was... I was using the TV as the center channel and it just does not have enough power. Now I want to use the digital out of the PC and input to the reciever. Just not sure how to do it. No optical out. Has a din? plug on the sound card for digital out. Not sure how to make that work ...yet... This way I can upscale all dvd's to TV and use the reciever as the sound when using coprighted DVD's.
Maybe I am overthinking all this...
Happy new year!
wow. I just connected the DVD via coax/HDMI to the receiver, and connected my cable box via HDMI/optical to the receiver. The only thing going to the TV is HDMI. And I got a Harmony 880 which makes everything easy for the wife. :-)
mackay1 01-04-07, 12:00 PM When I got the new system, I used my old cables. Last night I started my upgade by replacing the orange coax with and optical cable. When I try to select a new audio input on the receiver(ie OPT IN), It doesn't even show up. I can choose auto(no sound with this), coax in,analog. Any ideas on what I have not set right? I now have HDMI going from DVD to Receiver and receiver to TV.

If connecting the DVD to the receiver with HDMI, you can not use optical for the DVD, only Coax. If you are connecting via component, then it needs to go to video 1 or video 2, depending on where you are connecting via component
mackay1 01-04-07, 04:25 PM Thanks awarsoca,
I have to ask why and how and where did you find this. Where does it say this? The only reason I'm asking this is I'll have to prove it my son or he will not believe me.
Thanks again
rocksalt 01-04-07, 06:56 PM mackay1, what optical port did you use? If you used 'video 2' input on reciever then select 'video 2' on the remote and it should work. Be sure to turn on the right settings in the DVD player's audio setup(turn on digital out and set 'dolby digital:' to 'dolby digital'!, set downmix to dolby surround, dts: on) . The blue led on the reciever will light showing you multi channel decoding is being used.

Trial an error. I tried to hook my DVD up with optical and never got any sound unless I switched the receiver input to video 1. Then I got sound but no DVD video. As I wanted to use HDMI from the DVD palyer the only way to get the sound was vis Coax. If I was using component from DVD into Video1 on the receiver, then I can use the optical.
The optical ports are labeled Video 1 and Video 2. The HDMI ports are labeld DVD and Video2.
mackay1 01-06-07, 02:07 PM I now have the sound problem taken care of. I have my tv hooked up to receiver with composite cable(junkie old yellow ended cable) when I hook up component or hdmi from
receiver to tv I get no picture. Do you need component in to get component out? Any ideas
would be of great help

It's a waste to use the little yellow composite cables as you are not getting the quality of the better cables.
If you use HDMI you have to use an audio cable separate. HDMI on this unit does not pass the audio to the reciever, only to the TV.
If you connect the DVD player via HDMI, use video 2 if you want to use a fibre optic cable for the audio! - use 'video 2' on the remote to select DVD video from the player. TIP: re-program the remote's 'video 2' to sony dvd player.
Otherwise you can use the DVD(HDMI) input AND the COAX(ORANGE) for the multi-channel audio. It will not work with fibre optic audio output to video 1 or video 2 optical on the back of the unit.
If you want to use component cables (red, green, blue) you have to use the component in and component out to the tv. Then select the right video input on the unit.
It's alot easier, if you have multiple TV inputs, to use those and skip the reciever video inputs. Then just use the menu in your TV to change the input channel.
mackay1 01-09-07, 12:39 PM Rocksalt,
Thanks for the info. I think I am going to let the tv handle everything and give up on the
receiver. I don't know why I have been so hard headed to try to get the receiver to do
everthing. I can program my remote to handle the tv just as easy and if I go the Tv route,
I'll even save buying 1 hdmi cable(no cable from receiver to tv). HD receiver comes the 20th
can't wait. TV is a Sony SXRD 55. I'll be styling soon

Hello, I have a Sony STR-K7000 receiver. My HP TV, the receiver, the DVD player and the cable box all are HDMI compatible. I've hooked everything up, but am not getting any 5.1 sound from the TV/cable. I've read that this is rectified by adding a digital optical audio cable, but my TV menu says that to receive sound from the digital optical cable, I have to be using Digital TV input...WHAT?! I don't understand! Help!

Check your cable box for a digital audio output. That's what you will run to the receiver for sound.
So, I tried that and got nothing. Also noticed though, that I don't have any sound from anything. This is how I had it hooked up:
TV to Monitor Out on A/V Receiver (via HDMI)
Cable Box to A/V Receiver (via HDMI)
DVD to A/V Receiver (via HDMI)
Cable from wall to box
And, after your advice, Cable to A/V Receiver (via digital optical audio cable)
My receiver recognizes cable on Video 2, I ran the digital audio cable from the cable box to Video 2 input.
I got frustrated and went to see if I had any sound from my DVD player, also nothing. I just don't get it!!! Any more advice?
procuda 01-21-07, 02:02 PM Ok, I bought this system, STR-7000, seems to work pretty good. But, for some reason, approx. 5 or so minutes into a movie, LOCKED appears of the receiver screen, then, a minute or so later, UNLOCKED appears and the movie resumes.
Anyone have any experince with this???
I appreciate the help in getting my stuff hooked up, but now I gotta ask...is it normal for the receiver to starting blinking "protect" and shutting down? The volume is at around 36-40, but not getting that much sound. What do you guys think?

I have this system for a week now. I have not seen 'protect' blinking anytime. I had to keep the volume about 50 or so for my room. If your system is not getting turned on at all, then you want to get it replaced. My old home theater system went into protection mode and I had to throw it away.
bestthereis27 01-24-07, 03:02 PM Hello, I am a newbie when it comes to digital receivers/ Home Theaters. I am really looking at getting this system. The thing is I have many components that need to be plugged into the reciever or straight to the TV with sound plugged into the reciever.
What I have right now is:
Samsung DLP 61" TV
XBOX 360
Time Warner Digital HD DVR Cable Box.
I am planning on picking up 2 Sony DVD Jukeboxes (Model DVPCX995V) I have a lot of DVDs
Plus the HT-7000DH.
I would like the XBOX360, the 2 DVD Jukeboxes, and HT-7000DH DVD player all hooked up so they all get 5.1 sound. Is this possible?
What is the best way of hooking all of this up? Any Suggestions.
bestthereis27 01-24-07, 04:46 PM I think i may have found a solution.
My TV has a Digital Optical Out, if I connect that to the receivers Digital Optical In does that mean any component (XBOX, Cable Box) plugged into the back of the TV the sound will go through to the receiver and come out as 5.1 assuming the receiver is set to the right output.
Does this sound right?
morficus 01-25-07, 11:35 AM question...
If I only use an HDMI cable to connect the receiver to the TV, but use component for everything else, will that work?
So basically... everything going to the receiver will be component, but the out will be done via HDMI. I know I won't get any improvements, but this would just be a temporary set up.
morficus 01-25-07, 03:48 PM just contact Sony about this...
seems like this unit does not have any kind of converter...
if your componenet are hooked up via HDMI.. the output from the reciver must be HDMI
if your componenets are hooked up via component cables, the output from thereciver to the TV must be componenet.
Can not cross componenet to HDMI or the covnerse
:(
I'm a little disappointed by this actually... I'm not sure what Sony was thinking by releasing a resiver without an up converter and also one that does not get audio from HDMI.
The more I think about it.. the more useless I find this unit :(

What HTIB in this price range (~$400) does? None that I know of. Sure, that would be a nice feature, but unless you're willing to spend several hundred dollars more I don't think you should expect up converting or anything more than just HDMI pass through. There's a lot of HTIB systems (onkyo 790s) that doesn't even have HDMI pass through. You get what you pay for and for the money I would say the Sony HT 7000DH is a good value.
What I did is buy the Sony HT-DDW900 from walmart on sale for $198 (which is essentially the Sony HT 7000DH without the DVD player) and then I bought the Sony DVP-NS75H single-disc Progressive-Scan DVD Player (with HD Upconversion via HDMI) from BB for $116.99. Of course if I had boatloads of money I'd splurge on much higher cost equipment. But I was on a budget (wife constraints). For a budget system this is hard to beat. And I put it together for under $320. I think this is an excellent value. I also bought a budget HDTV, the Sceptre X32GV-KOMODO LCD from Costco for $599. So for under $1k I have our small little living room set up with a 32" HDTV with decent surround sound and a decent upconverting DVD player. And best part is we don't even have to pay extra for HD service or pay a monthly fee for a STB because the Sceptre X32GV-KOMODO LCD has a QAM tuner that pulls in all the HD channels. The wife was against it all in the beginning (our 10 year old 27" CRT works just fine she said). But now she's quite happy and actually likes what I've done, especially since I didn't spend thousands to get us set up with a decent home theatre system.
I think i may have found a solution.

Be careful with this bestthereis27. I have an optical output from my tv as well since it has an internal ATSC tuner (the type you need for digital channels). On my tv, this optical output only passes audio from the ATSC tuner. You will need to check the manual to see if this is any different for your tv. If your tv works the same as mine with regards to the optical output, I can only think of one solution. There is a switcher box (like the things you used to hook up all your video game systems to the same tv) that is designed for high def cables (component video and coax/optical audio cables). I saw it being sold at online video game stores. I'm not sure if it is still sold, but this sort of thing would be your best option other than just getting a new reciever (still assuming your tv's optical out works the same as mine). Also, keep in mind that only optical cables and digital coax cables (and hdmi) cables can pass the information needed for 5.1 audio. That means, even if your tv can pass audio information from other inputs to the optical out, they would still have to be from one of those three types of cables.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
I have this HTIB, and have noticed that there is always a faint clicking/tapping coming out of the speakers. When there is actually audio coming out the speakers, you cannot hear it, but during silent parts of movies or when there is no audio signal, the clicking can definitely be heard. I was wondering if anyone else with this system has noticed this as my brother has the same issue? If so, did anyone figure out how to fix it (other than sending the system back to Sony)?
delvryboy 02-06-07, 09:52 PM I just bought a dt-7000dh from Grant's, I paid $388 out the door(was a swap out on a dvx375 that I had problems with).
I read above that the 7000 has a single disc, this one has a 5 disc changer. Also, it says it upconverts to 720p/1080i via HDMI.
I doubt I'll use the pass thru, since I have 2 HDMI ports on the TV.
1 Question, for 5.1 on HD broadcasts; should I use the optical out from the lcd to the receiver, or the digital coaxial from the comcast box?
samsurd2 02-06-07, 10:55 PM So, I tried that and got nothing.
I also have this system and have it hooked up just as you describe BUT with one addition: Coax audio from DVD (DIGITAL OUT COAXIAL) to A/V Receiver (DVD IN COAXIAL). This insures that whatever you're receiving from the cable box or the DVD player (for example, 5.1 surround sound) is what you'll have going into the the A/V Receiver.
By the way, TexAce is correct to caution about running an optical audio cable from the HDTV back to the A/V Receiver: you will generally NOT get 5.1.
morficus 02-08-07, 10:52 PM will I really get any advantage from using optical cables over coax?
also, I've been having a problem with me center speaker... it does not output sound :(
even when I run the the test signal, the center channel does not ouput anything. but the display says that all 5 speakers are active.
does this mean that the middle speaker is blown out? but if it was... would the display still show it as active?
anyone have any ideas?
ebernazz 02-09-07, 01:36 PM [QUOTE=morficus]will I really get any advantage from using optical cables over coax?
Every time this gets brought up it frustrates the "knowledagble" ones, but I will at least try to answer your question.
Since both Digital Coax and Optical (toslink) connections are digital there is no difference. It’s binary so it’s either on or off (1s or 0s). Optical has some advantages with less RF interference but that is rarely an issue for HTIB users. So on paper there should be no difference.
Now on my HT7000 I feel that I get fuller sound when I use DC. Many say it is not true and is just the placebo effect (could be true since Sony wrote it in the manual and I did read that before tried it). Anyway if you have it connected coax leave it, the difference (or lack there of) is certainly not worth an extra cable and eventually you will have something else to connect and then you will be glad to have an open optical connector.
Fitz4David 05-06-07, 04:58 PM I was looking for an entry level HDMI capable receiver.
Sounds great, but HDMI sucks.
Not smart to support only video and not audio. True HDMI should handle both.
Then, called Sony support to get DVD HDMI working... they had me reset, power off, etc. and then gave an event id. Luckily, I only have it for 2 weeks so it is going back to Costco tomorrow.
Recommend a higher end if you are looking for HDMI. Otherwise, it will works for an entry level home theater system.
Finally got this completely hooked up last night. Had to unhook everything when I got water in the basement home theater last month. So before hooking everything back up bought the two additional cables I needed to get the complete connections. I have a SA8300HD from Cablevision. Have that hooked up to the TV via component and red and white RCA audio for when I don't need or want the HT on. Have HDMI and optical audio from the cable box connected to the HT's video 2 input. I can leave the cable box audio set to Dolby digital this way. The upconvert DVD is connected to the HT by HDMI and digital coax audio into the DVD input. Have the HDMI output from the HT connected to the TV. Everything is working great with this setup.
dave2222 09-22-07, 05:38 PM Hi,
I am having problems with sound. On some stations, at some times, I do not get 5.1 sound. It is very muffled and seems to be coming from the subwoofer. It can happen as quickly as going from a commercial to a program, while watching the same channel, such as NBC HD. If I watch the same channel, NBC in SD, I do not have this problem. I can watch CBS in HD, but I do not have this problem. I have the same problem with ABC HD.
My system:
I have an HP pl4260n Plasma HDTV with HDMI in.
I have the Sony HT-7000DH.
I have a Motorola DCT 6200 set top cable box only had DVI out, not HDMI.
Here is how it is all connected:
MY set-up
Your set-up
Moto DCT --> DVI-to-HDMI (video ONLY, no audio present) --> AVR (VIDEO 2)
Moto DCT --> Digital Audio (optical) --> AVR (VIDEO 2)
DVDP --> HDMI --> AVR (DVD)
AVR (MONITOR OUT) --> HDMI --> HDTV (HDMI 1)
I am guessing there is some setting in the AVR that is not right.
AVR is set to Auto AFD on Video 2.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your quick response.
