View Full Version : Component and HDMI switchers? Need help and recommendations.
GeminiEntity 06-20-06, 04:14 PM I need a few extra component and hdmi inputs. I want a good quality one that is capable of displaying HD correctly (no picture quality loss/downgrade), but something that is priced sensible.
The problem is this, does any brand make a component and hdmi switcher in one? Or will I need to buy two separate switchers?
I also need recommendations on brands, since I have no idea where to start.
Rick Sass 06-21-06, 10:05 AM You may want to post this in the "Home Integration and Distribution" forum...
GeminiEntity 06-21-06, 09:43 PM Will do.
GeminiEntity 06-27-06, 08:59 PM No luck on the other board. I found a HDMI switch which I plan to buy, but still need a good priced Component Switcher that is around $70-$100.
Any ideas?
You can get a used Extron System 8 for that, or less, off of ebay.

GeminiEntity 06-28-06, 08:49 PM Not bad, though I was looking for something new and 5-6 inputs regular component inputs would be fine. Guess I just gotta keep looking.
BigMikeATL 06-28-06, 09:38 PM While this doesn't address your component video needs, HDMI isn't a problem... check out these guys: http://www.octavainc.com/index.htm
Ace of Space 07-03-06, 01:44 PM I'm using a component switch from Inday, model RGB4X-R. Been using it for about 2 years and it has worked perfectly. I highly recommend this switcher. Note that it only switches component video, no audio. I'm also looking at Octava for my future hdmi switch. Here's the company link: http://www.inday.com/index.html
CraiginNJ 07-04-06, 12:01 PM I'm about to buy a CELabs (Cable Electronics) SW104HD from buy. 4 inputs (fine for me, but less than you wanted), two outputs, remote. Six connectors for each input - component (3), L&R audio (2), digital audio (not optical).
For HDMI, the monoPrice 2777 is inexpensive -- search on the avsforum for other references to it.

I think I've found a winner. The SW104HD looks like the perfect choice for me. I realized 4 is more than enough for me. And it's funny you suggest the Monoprice 2777 model, cause that is the one I was taking about when I said I found a HDMI switch. :) Thanks a lot man, your taste for quality and price seems to be very much like mine.
Also I thank everyone else for helping me out. Made this search for switchers much easier, and now I know of good places to check for stuff like this in the future.
I. M. Fletcher 07-05-06, 03:46 PM I'm really looking for a 4X2 component switcher. I only have 3 inputs (cable box, dvd player, and xbox with HD dongle). I want to send those signals to both my phillips HD CRT and my H27 projector. I won't be using my projector for everyday viewing (like checking the weather and watching the news). My 5 year old Yamaha receiver is only 2X1. I could go buy a new receiver. I'm sure my Vienna Accoustics would appreciate it, but it's not in the budget right now.
Anyone seen a 4X2 component switcher?
EDIT: I'm retarded. I didn't check the spec sheet for the CeLabs switcher. Thats exactly what I need.
themorey 07-08-06, 05:42 PM I looked at the CeLabs switcher and it has 2 ouputs but they are not independent. I want to switch any of the 4 inputs to either of the 2 outputs at the same time. For example, HD DVR on input 1 to output 1 connected to Plasma in living room. At the same time I want to switch HD satellite box on input 2 to output 2 connected to Plasma in bedroom.
The only box I can find that will do this is the video storm CSM42. The site won't let me post the URL but search for Videostorm and CSM42 and you'll find it.
Does anyone have any experience with this switcher or can you recommend something else?
thanks,
Jerry
Extron and Autopatch make models that will work. New ones will be quite a bit more than the CeLabs units, but you can find used ones for a good price.

videostorm 07-11-06, 06:33 PM We also make a matrix switch box that has both component and HDMI/DVI switching. It is the CRM62D (CRM62 with digital video board option). It is a bit more expensive, but does simplify control to a single IR or RS-232.
CSM42 is our 4 by 2 component video & audio matrix switch. It will give you independently controllable outputs just like the CRM62.
If you need the least expensive high quality component switch solution, we have CSW62. It is 6x2 component video without audio. It has dual (non matrix) outputs like the CElabs.

Thanks Videostorm. The CSM42 isn't RS-232 controllable is it? Any experience or knowledge of anyone using with a Control4 Media Controller?

videostorm 07-21-06, 10:25 PM No, if you need rs-232 you have to go with the CRM62 or CRM84. I know people have used both with control4, but I don't have the scripts. The command format is really simple though, so it should be easy to integrate.
stillabushfan 03-21-07, 09:26 AM Videostorm, I was looking at the CSM42 and your earlier post. I have two LCDs facing either side of a wall that seperates a Kitchen area and a Family room. I would like to have both completely independent and on at the same time (Kitchen watching Tivo, Family room watching DVD or BlueRay simultaneously). Is this possible with the CSM42?
Sorry, I'm a newb to forums so I don't know if I should post this as a new question.
Thanks!!
videostorm 03-21-07, 08:17 PM Yes, CSM42 will perform that function.
blove145 08-27-08, 11:13 PM my 1st ht setup. basically i want to put all the components and equipment in the corner to give under the tv a very clean look. here are my components
hdmi - 360, ps3, dish, possibly dvd player later on
component - ps2 wii xbox1
i'll also be getting the onkyo 805s
i think that's all...for now lol. Also if anyone can recommend a component rack. Im in the beginning phases of looking for one. preferably one that can keep an onkyo 805s as cool as possible :) Thank you everyone.
videostorm 08-28-08, 11:02 AM Gemini,
You might want to look at our new CMX product line. It will handle the component, composite, analog audio, and digital audio switching. It comes in 4x4 upto 16x16 configurations (4x4 will be out mid next month).
It also has an expansion port which allows connection to our HMX HDMI matrix switch line (also out next month). These will come in 4x2, 4x4, and 8x8 configurations.
These two together provide a very clean rack mount solution which is easy to control with a single IR or RS-232 interface.
You can find them at www.video-storm.com
