yeah, I'd like to add them somewhere, but since there is no set date for it, I think I'll wait until they are available for shipment, then just add them to the "available now" list...

if the HDNet rep could give a solid date though, I'd definitely put them up...

I am waiting to see which disk format takes the market. just bought a mits 57731. to play the hd-player on when the price comes down.
Why are they not putting the new releases of the same movies as the sd dvds. looks like they would put the newest videos out and add some retro as well each week. If they do not will they ever be up to date?

HD DVD Heats Up With Extensive Lineup of Upcoming Titles (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/HD_DVD_Heats_Up_With_Extensive_Lineup_of_Upcoming_Titles/139)

The number of upcoming titles headed for HD DVD continues to grow exponentially, as the format's official promotional website has just unveiled an extensive slate of titles due over the next several months.

Launched early last week as part of an extensive $150 million dollar marketing campaign designed to raise consumer awareness of HD DVD, www.TheLookandSoundofPerfect.com has added a large number of previously unannounced titles to its official coming soon to HD DVD movie release list.

Though street dates and features have yet to be announced for the new additions, new titles are listed from all current HD DVD supporting studios, including Warner and subsidiary New Line, Universal, Paramount, Weinstein Co. and Magnolia.

Among the numerous catalog releases due to hit HD DVD are such hits as 'The Mummy,' 'Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' 'American Pie,' 'Meet the Parents,' 'Hulk,' 'The Scorpion King,' 'Waterworld' and the multiple Oscar winners 'The Aviator,' 'Casino,' 'Spartacus,' 'Braveheart' and 'The Deer Hunter.'

More catalog classics and cult hits slate for upcoming release include 'Out of Sight,' 'Field of Dreams,' 'The Breakfast Club,' 'The Blues Brothers,' 'An American Werewolf in London,' 'Battlestar Galactica' and 'The Ultimate Star Trek Collection' box set from Paramount.

Also on the docket for HD DVD are a number of current and upcoming high-profile theatrical releases, which are expected to debut in the coming months day-and-date with DVD, including 'Miami Vice,' 'You, Me & Dupree,' 'The Break-Up,' 'The Black Dahlia,' 'Slither' and the latest in the 'Fast and the Furious' and 'American Pie' franchises.

All of these newly-announced titles have been added to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our complete HD DVD Release Schedule. Stay tuned for full details and street dates for all titles as soon as they are officially announced.

I can't wait for the HD-DVD version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I went into Wal-Mart the other day and they had a space for Troy on HD-DVD but it was empty. I went in today and it was still empty. Maybe there'll be a few titles that slip under the radar. Hopefully Batman Begins and The Matrix are among those.

Any chance of reporting if the ICT has been enabled on the title(s)?

EDIT: Disregard the following: I ask because I saw a post elsewhere suggesting that "Apollo 13" would not play @ HD resolution through component outputs.

DigitalBits is under the impression that Apollo13 is unrestrained ... FWIW :)

I still think it would be a good idea to make note of these things (along with any other flaws like the audio and interlace bugs on some titles.)

Yeah it's different, it's cute. The little girl in that movie is pretty good. I don't really like Ben Afflect but he's nice in this movie, he doesn't bother me as much as in other movies he made.. LOL

Thanks for this great sticky thread.

Can we please keep the release dates on the released titles? I'm forever coming here trying to find out "what was released last week?" but they've all been moved under "currently available" with no indication of when they came out. As big of an HD DVD fan as I am, I can't remember exactly what titles are new to the list.

thanks much,

KC

No. If and when they do, you'll know it because there will be threads with exclamation points that stay near the top of the page. :)

Edit: okay, when a major US release has it that will happen.

The latest word from the HD DVD camp is there will be at least 175 movies released by Christmas 2006. These were supposed to be confirmed, and there was a suggestion that there may be more, just not yet confirmed. I am really looking forward to this holiday season!

Interesting that Reds (for which Warren Beatty got a best director Oscar) is coming out soon in a 25th anniversary edition. It has never been available on DVD before, and will be sold in DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray formats. Fascinating film.

There's just no end to the madness this week, folks! No sooner do we sign off for the day, tentative word comes in from Warner that the studio is going to be releasing at least SOME of the classic Superman theatrical films in high-def as well on 11/28. We're trying to get all the details for you, but what we know so far is that the studio's press site indicates that Superman: The Movie and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut will be released on HD-DVD format on 11/28 (SRP $28.99 each - 1080p 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio). We're pretty sure that isn't the whole story (we'd be surprised if all the films weren't on the way to BOTH high-def formats, based on comments studio reps made earlier this year at their 2006 catalog press event). When we have an update for you, we'll be sure to jump back in here with all the details.

By the way, we've added a couple more details to our Superman Returns DVD/HD-DVD Combo specs (click here). We've confirmed with the studio that the disc will be an HD-30C configuration (30/9 - 30GB on the HD-DVD side and 9GB on the DVD side), and that it will include BOTH Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio (previous information indicated only Plus). This comes straight from studio reps.

looks like 11/28 will be a big day for Superman!

Anyone on the list from the Calgary, Alberta area who is aware of a local retailer who actually keeps up with new releases on HD DVD? I have been waiting impatiently for Batman Begins to show up on a shelf at BB or FS for two weeks now. After the initial splash for the release of the players I don't think much new has been brought in.

I am happily voting with my $$$ for HD DVD to be the format of choice, but it is frustrating to be always waiting extra time for new releases. I'm not fond of ordering online but may have to resort to it - even a two week delivery would be faster than waiting for the big stores to catch up.

Anyway, let me know if there is a local retailer who keeps their stock up to date. I will gladly shop somewhere other than the big box stores.

I'm just about to update the list, been a bit busy the last couple of weeks... the major problem is trying to pin dates for titles not from the major studios. There is conflicting dates and information depending on what retailer you use or when information was released (for example, the HDScape Aqua had a late September, then late October, then late Jan., and now late Nov. release date). Some sites say Nov. 30th for DVE, some say Dec. 5th...

but yeah, in a bit I'll update this with at least the recent major announcements for titles in Jan./Feb.

Why does it seem like Paramount has all but stop releasing movies for either format? I mean, they have a few titles coming out but, not much considering the library of movies. Have they decided to take a more backseat approach to the format war?

I'm kinda disappointed with the lack of big blockbuster titles coming out this holiday season (of course BD isn't doing much better on that front).

Harry Potter Goblet of Fire is AVAILABLE in HD DVD in UK. Several members have imported it and were inpressed.

Unlike DVD, HD DVD does not have region coding(yet) so importing is viable, if expensive)

It is also featured in the HD DV promo at the start of the HD DVD movies.

Does anybody know when they will be released on HDDVD?

SirDrexl
12-28-06, 06:31 AM
The Departed will probably be the same day as the DVD.

As for FOOF, who knows? It's a Dreamworks/Warner title, and I don't know what the deal is with Dreamworks for HD. Paramount is supposed to be distributing their titles (and will distribute the DVD domestically), but they haven't announced anything for Dreamworks titles in HD yet. I wonder if something (or someone) is holding them up...

If they don't come through, bear in mind that Warner has the international distribution rights to the title (the domestic/international rights are reversed for Letters from Iwo Jima), so it could be available to import.

Yes, and why haven't the "currently available" tiles been updated?

If this thread is to remain a sticky, why not keep the list of "currently available" titles up to date?

It is lame seeing the available titles end at November 14.

efralope
01-21-07, 07:19 PM
The reason is because the release dates of a lot of titles is uncertain even after release date. I guess Nov. is settled, but actually, some of the HDScape titles had late September, late October, late November, and then late Jan. release dates, and I wanted to be 100% sure of the dates, plus keeping the total list a few weeks behind would give people time to protest whether the release date was correct or not (for example, Magnolia's Blu-ray titles, 10 of them, were released in October yet it seems they are only in limited release or given away).

On that note, does anybody know what happened with The Architect (Dec. 5th)? Was that released after all?

If it's HD-DVD releases you yearn for, and those from Universal in particular, check out their 100-plus 2007 release schedule posted on hometheaterforum last week as part of a discussion with their executive.

Though highly subjective with tastes of the viewer, this seems a VERY strong list. However I can see that if your preference runs to comedy and family fare, it does not match the Blu-Ray schedule IMO.

Enjoy!

Whoa! Are you kidding me!?!?!?

How in the world did Ran get past my radar?

I already own two versions of this on DVD, but neither one is acceptable in terms of PQ. I wonder what the HD-DVD version will look like?

Very cool this is coming out!

If this has been mentioned elsewhere on this thread, I apologize, but I thought folks may want to know that I received an email from "an industry insider" who claims that Universal will be releasing "The Birds" & "Psycho" in the fall. Since this is secondhand knowledge I cannot vouch for its accuracy, but if true, this is great news for us classic film fans.

It's from New Line, so it's anyone's guess. All we do know is that it won't be day and date with the DVD (July 10th).

I think it really is time for an update here, whats funny is, it was last updated on 6/29, but it still showed a yet to be released section of 5/22, 5/29 and so on.

I guess it was a very quick update.

yeah, lots of announcements the past few days... the main reason I lag on updating the list with recent releases is because sometimes dates change and movies that were supposed to come out all of a sudden aren't actually released...

then there is the weird matter of releases like Magnolia, where they officially released movies last year, but are nowhere to be found, and stuff that was supposed to ship in May and April barely making it out in June (with the April and May dates intact)...

I didn't even know the HDScape Window stuff actually made it out finally until I saw it myself at an HEB Plus store (weird that this newly expanding franchise would best just about every store out there on available releases and prices)...

As to combo disks: assuming you have latest firmware updates on your player, you may have one or more bad pressings(I've just had one). If it's a rental(or, a new one from a good store) swap it out for another copy.

Last time I tried to play _The Good Shepherd_, I had lockups, but that was with firmware 1.6.. I just updated to 2.0, will see if it works.. Have had zero problems with any HDDVD-only discs since the day my XA2 arrived.

Hmm, I'm debating how to approach the count total...

Should every SKU release be counted in?

I'm thinking of maybe having 2 "total" counts, one for # of movies, another for # of actual releases...

basically, the Matrix movies would count as 3 movies, 2 releases, while the Mission Impossible series would count as 3 movies, 4 releases (set + 3 separate discs)... also, Army of Darkness would count for 1 movie, 2 releases (combo + non-combo)...

I want to keep a good, accurate count, but I don't want to mislead. The problem is, it might get quite complicated trying to keep 2 separate counts and stuff... oh well, for the moment I'll probably update the total count to include every single release possible.

Also, should the "Best of HD DVD" 4-movie packs from Warner count as well?

Hi Efralope: Yes I've wondered how to count the titles also but have come to the simple conclusion that unless you simply count what is released (by a unique sku number) such as counting a boxset as 1 rather then the 3-4 movies that it might actually contain that then you get into a debate of what counts as a movie etc... I dont want to go down that road and say this music concert counts but not this documentary etc...

As for my own personal count of titles owned, I count every individual movie owned and not by boxsets...

So for the purposes of a total release count if what is on my worksheet is accurate, today HD DVD surparses Blu-ray for that amount of releases in North America.

HD DVD: 282
Blu-ray : 277

And this is without counting boxsets movies individually (The Matrix, Smallville season 5 etc) which would increase the total number.

Add in the not so much talked about 2 dozen or so exclusive HD DVD adult titles.

Plus since technically were counting releases for this region and there is no region coding you could count worldwide releases for HD DVD which essientially will double the total putting HD DVD as having over 600 releases all that can currently play in players here.

Add in the 1,000 HD DVD exclusive independent movies due to be released this year and were now up to 1,600 to 1,700 releases before the end of the year.

hi Danc, no they are not my ratings they are from highdefdigest. It started out as a way to just veiw full format lists of what was available but has grown since.

And since excel can be limiting in its formulas and other features Ive been thinking about converting it to an online SQL Server database but still searching for a way that I would not have to continually manually update the info rather then just working on statistical queries and reports

Another place to look is at blockbuster.com: on their website, go to COLLECTIONS, and then scroll over and down to HD-DVD. As of last Thursday, they listed a total of 300 HD-DVD titles. I've personally rented more than 100 HD-DVDs from all sources including Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, but refuse to buy them on principle only because I think they're GROSSLY overpriced. From my experience only, the average quality of the transfers - especially the Universals - is extremely good.

DreamWorks Plans 'Things We Lost in the Fire' HD DVD
Thu Dec 13, 2007 at 03:00 PM ET

In an early alert to retailers, DreamWorks has announced that it will bring the Halle Berry drama 'Things We Lost in the Fire' to HD DVD this February.

Starring Halle Berry and Benecio Del Toro as widowers who find love after tragedy, 'Things We Lost in the Fire' was promoted as one of the season's potential Oscar heavyweights, but weak reviews and a middling box office gross of less than $15 million have seen the film all but disappear off the awards-season radar.

DreamWorks/Paramount is apparently planning to give he film another shot at attention on February 12, planning the disc for HD DVD release day-and-date with the standard-def DVD.No tech specs or supplemental details were available at press time, but the studio tells us that a full press release is expected next week, so we'll keep you posted.

Paramount has set a $39.98 suggested list price for the HD DVD.

The super sexy Halle Berry is especially hot in this movie!:D

'Things We Lost in the Fire' Coming to HD DVD
December 18, 2007
Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Things We Lost in the Fire will be released February 12 on HD DVD. The film stars Halle Berry, Benicio Del Toro, and David Duchovny, and is directed by Susanne Bier of After the Wedding fame.

Things We Lost in the Fire will be presented in widescreen 1080p video and, if we're reading the product detail correctly, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio. The audio format could change, though, given the vagueness of what we've been presented.

A commentary title A Discussion About Things We Lost In The Fire headlines the special features, which also include 7 alternate scenes and the theatrical trailer. None of the special features are marked as being presented in high definition.

Beowulf is coming.

So is there any reason (other than laziness) that the studio couldn't put the 3D version on the set? It could come with one set of glasses (+ I kept my set from the theater). If regular DVD can do it (aka SharkBoy and LavaGirl, etc.) I would think that HD DVD would have no problem. Even if it has to be a 2 disc set.

If there are any Paramount insiders, I think you should start telling em we want the 3D version included somewhere. It would be awesome!

From what I remember in the theater, if you took you glasses off, the picture was offcentered on the screen, obiviously blurry, and the colors were off. I don't see why a disc couldn't have this encoded and sent to home sets the same way.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Paramount/Disc_Announcements/Paramount_Plots_Beowulf_HD_DVD_for_February/1282

In an early alert to retailers, Paramount has revealed that it's planning to bring the fantasy hit 'Beowulf' to HD DVD this February.

Utilizing cutting-edge motion capture technology to update the classic tale of the mythical English warrior, Robert Zemeckis's 'Beowulf' has enthralled audiences worldwide to the tune of nearly $200 million in box office receipts (and counting).

Paramount has set a February 26 arrival for the HD DVD, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD.

According to the studio, a full press release for 'Beowulf' isn't expected until early next month, so for now specs and supplement details are TBA. As always, we'll keep you posted.

Suggested retail price for the HD DVD has been set at $39.98.

I felt like Eilane from Seinfeld in the episode where she went to the English Patient. She was looking around the theater, "like can you believe this?" Rolling her eyes and laughing at inappropriate times. I thought the same of this film. ;)

Though hats off to the young actress in the beginning of the film (forgot the character's name) and Lynn Redgrave litterally stoled the show with her 5 mins on the screen.

Hey guys. I'm a long-time reader, first-time poster. Let me say that I'm a huge fan of HD and HD DVD and have become addicted to buying HD DVDs from Amazon since they began their 10% discount promo. My buying habits peaked during the BOGOs of December, and I'm still purchasing and supporting HD DVD even after 1/4. Despite Warner's future defection, I still consider them a current HD DVD studio until June, so I still look forward to their releases and check Amazon every day for new listings.

I just saw on HDD that Michael Clayton was just listed so I went to pre-order it. Surprisingly my 10% discount was applied despite it being a new listing. I know that new listings like American Gangster and Beowulf are still pending that discount for me. Anyway, the Amazon price is about $25, which comes out to less than $23 dollars shipped for me. I feel that $23 for a new release HD DVD Oscar contender like this movie is a steal, let alone with a bonus DVD version to loan to my parents for them to watch. (I'm of the group that finds great value in combos and never had any playback problems using the 360 add-on). I believe the Blu-ray version is the same price and doesn't come with a DVD side. Anyway, it's a real shame to lose Warner as I find their quality and price to be right on. Based on this release as well as other new combos they've released or announced since their new lower pricing policy starting with Harry Potter:OotP, I find it painfully obvious which format is the better choice for consumers. But I digress.

Anyway, go pre-order Michael Clayton at Amazon, especially if you got in on the 10% promo!

The Heroes Season 1 HD DVD came out almost exactly 3 months after the last episode aired. With the writer's strike still going on with no end in sight, I'm starting to believe that Chapter 2 is going to be the considered the end of Season 2. It would make sense to me for Universal to now prep it for release. Following the same timeline as the first season, I would expect Season 2 to come out in early March. One can hope, right?

- HD DVD 1.85
only English audio track and French subtitles. I wasn't able to get more information but I hope the HD DVD release is not a "fullscreen HDTV" version. :(

EDIT: @sharkcohen, thanks for that link, so I guess the 2.35 is an error and widescreen will be 1.85 also. Now I know where to look for more information.
