:(

Sucks to be me at this point. I just hooked my new HD-A1 up to my Infocus 4805 via a very expensive fiber optic DVI cable. I can get to the set-up menu but when I try an SD DVD I get the dreaded HDMI ERROR 1. I don't have an HD DVD disk to try yet. My 4805 is running some pretty old firmware but I haven't had an issue with my other hardware like my OPPO DVD player with the same cable. I have to try the "press play 3 times" trick yet and I haven't played around with the order of which piece of gear to turn on first. Can anyone offer me some options? Thanks in advance.

RandyI hope someone comes to the rescue...as I planned on mating the Tosh with my 4805. as to why it wouldn't work!

The HDMI error merssage used to appear when I had the player on and switched to a satelite channel to see what was on, when I returned to the movie the HDMI error message would be displayed. The firmware upgrade download or firmware uprade disc from Toshiba takes care of this completely.

I'm running this same combo with the latest firmware versions in both. I have experienced no HDMI "handshake" issues, provided I power-up the 4805 first. I'm using a direct feed via 35' HDMI/M1-DA cable from Monoprice. I can report excellent results from HD-DVD at 1080i and upconverted SD-DVD. (Watched "The Rundown" the other night...wonderful video and audio experience).

I have to double check but I think I am already running version 1.3. My player has a May build date. Is that possible since the firmware version update on the web site says its version 1.2?

Thanks

Still in HDMI ERROR hell. The player will not sync up with my 4805 with SD or HD DVD material via HDMI/DVI. I had the player completely lock up tonight. Had to unplug it to bring it back to life. I will be forced to upgrade my firmware which I think is original on the projector. The Toshiba has version 1.3 loaded on it when I got it so it seems to be the fault of my display and its old firmware.

FWIW, no problems here running HD-A1 to SP4805. I'm feeding the player though a short HDMI cable to a 4-port Gefen switch. That switch then feeds the signal through a 10-meter DVI-to-M1 Infocus cable to the projector. I had just one no good handshake where the white snow screen came on and stayed on. I simply powered down the HD-A1 and then back up again. Worked fine.

My HD-A1 has original 1.0 firmware and the 4805 has the latest firmware.

You might want to try to eliminate that fiber optic cable and test with a high confidence HDMI-to-M1 cable. And you really should update the 4805's firmware. The original firmware had lots of issues.

I am still screwing around with this and I am ready to throw the 4805 out the window. I just upgraded the the projector to the newest firmware and it changed nothing. The Toshiba already has 1.3 loaded on it and I am going to upgrade it to 1.4 as soon as I get the disk in the mail. I have tried this with my existing fiber optic DVI cable (VERY expensive 33' fiber optic DVI cable ~$400!) both direct and thru a Monoprice HDMI switcher and I purchased a 35' HDMI cable from Monoprice which I had exactly the same results with. The startup splash screen and setup menu on the A1 display fine but as soon as I try to load any disk, HD or SD I get HDMI ERROR 1 and then the player displays STOP. It plays fine via component inputs. I am most likely going to wait for the 1.4 upgrade disk and if that doesn't work I am going to buy a Sanyo PLV-Z4. I already got a buyer for the 4805. It's a shame but I guess I would most likely be upgrading my projector by the end of the year anyway. I am hoping that the real HDMI input has better HDCP reliability. It's a higher native res. projector anyway.

I had the same problem for awhile. At first I thought it was my HDMI to M1 adapter. After reseating all the connections I powered on the 4805 first then powered up the Toshiba. Both had the original firmware. HDMI looks so much better than component. I feel your pain though, it was driving me nuts for a while also. It seems as soon as I got it to work the first time I didnt have anymore problems.

Turn on display first and then the A-1. That may help.

Also, 1.4 may help in your case.

I have tried powering the A1 up first then the projector and the other way around and still no go. I have reseated cables, tried different cables with and without the HDMI switcher and it still refuses to handshake with the projector. The Z4 is being ordered this morning. There are some awesome deals going on right now on these. The price with the rebate for a free lamp and screen really sweetens the deal.

I have the 4805 and an A-1 but have not hooked them up together since the 4805 is ED and not HD. Does anybody notice a real improvement with HD-DVD on the 4805 or is it just a slightly better picture do to a cleaner source over SD-DVD.

Mine hooked up via source 2. No problems here. Upscaled DVD looked much better thru HDMI compared to component.

Weird with my A1 and Philips Plasma when I change the inputs <switch channels> I still get the HDMI error with FW 1.4.

Weird with my A1 and Philips Plasma when I change the inputs <switch channels> I still get the HDMI error with FW 1.4.

Interesting. With the 8 series hdmi board on my Panny 8UK, I can do absolutely anything I want, including turning off the display and turning it back on, let alone switching the inputs and there are no errors at all. Of course if I turn the display off the movie stops and then starts in the begining, but switching inputs does nothing absolutely to the XA-1, movie plays along normally!

Not sure if others with the 8UK and the optional 8 series optional board have a different experience than me....

So in a nutshell, the hdmi error may be at least somewhat related to the display under consideration and it's implementation of hdmi and the inputs...

I've had no problems at all with an Infocus 5700 couple to a RCA HDV5000 (A1 clone). I'm using a HDMI->DVI adapter at the player end and a short DVI-M1 adapter cable at the projector end, witha 15ft DVI->DVI cable in between.

I usually power on the projector first as it takes a couple of minutes for the bulb to reach full brightness, but I have switched from DVI input to component input with the player on and did not lose the HDCP handshake.

Interesting, I had considered that. I've been toying with finding a cheap switch to put in between. I just don't know if it looks for the HDMI connection just to the next uplink, or all the way to the TV. My guess is when you change your input from HDMI on the Philips TV that it maybe shutsdown the HDMI port?

I have this same set-up running and it looks wonderful!

I have no SD-DVD including any in my extensive collection of Superbit DVDs which comes even close in video presentation (and audio) to a properly mastered HD-DVD through the A-1 and 4805 (using HDMI to M1-PD, BTW).

This is great hardware combo, particulary since the total cost of both totaled a little under $1,000.

i am currently have my Tosh mated to my infocus 4805 via hdmi-m1 cable.
the picture quality imo is the same as tosh component to 4805 component.
hd-dvd movies look good but its very obvious to me at least that it is not true Hd
i was completelysatisfied with the 4805 until i bought the Tosh.tomorrow i retire the faithful 4805 and put a new Sanyo plz-v4 into service

Well I unboxed the new Sanyo Z4 last night and tested it with a 35' Monoprice HDMI cable both direct and thru my Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switcher and it played everything I threw at it just fine. No more (knock on wood) HDMI ERROR 1. Now I have to get the Z4 mounted and fish that HDMI cable and hopefully finally enjoy that HD-DVD player this weekend. The only thing I can't figure out is why my 4805 wouldn't handshake with the A1 despite many others telling me they didn't have a problem with the same combo? Oh, well hopefully the 4805's new owner won't want to make the same combo work...because it won't.

A minor item I guess, but instead of unplugging, try pressing in the power button for ten seconds to force a reboot. Should at least help a little with the hassle factor :(.

PS. A flaky HDMI connection could also be dogging you. And maybe you could look at projector grounding with and without a cheater plug. Just thoughts. :(

The Z4 works without fail so far with the A1 so I don't believe it is the player. There was something fishy about the HDCP on that DVI connection on my 4805. I installed the newest firmware on the 4805 before I gave up and it made no difference. I as far as grounding I don't see what difference that would make? FWI...I wired the equipment rack and projector outlets on the same 20 amp circuit to avoid any potential ground reference issues. I also have the projector plugged onto a monster subwoofer surge suppressor line conditioner and the rack equipment is all plugged in to several Panamax surge/conditioner units. No problem there. Doesn't matter anymore anyway...the Z4 and the A1 rock as a combo. Thanks for the tip on rebooting the player. If it ever locks up again I'll try that even though I made access to the rear of my rack super easy the way I built my room. Check out the gallery in my sig. to see what I mean.

I only mentioned grounding since I found ground related misbehaviors with my RCA/Toshiba HDMI->DVI TV connection. Given the projector is in the back of the room, it may well be on a different circuit and could have a different ground potential. Worth checking, but no guaranteed solution.

Well, i just ordered the Tosh and I have the 4805. I was planning to use my existing 10 meter Infocus DVI to M1 cable to attach a HDMI to DVI adaptor from monoprice to the Tosh. Should I expect an HDMI error? I am still running the original firmware on my 4805.

Another Tosh running HDMI to DVI 35' Monoprice cable and adaptor to SP4805. I have tried every combination of turning this on, switching inputs, SD and HD disks and have had no errors or skipping or lockup or for that matter any glitch or issue. Sounds like I am one of the lucky ones.

If this makes anyone with a 4805 feel better, I too still get teh HDMI ERROR 1 with my BenQ PE7800 and the HD-A1. I dont think its your PJ.

Some things on this..
setup-setup-setup-enter doesnt always work.

This happens a lot of youre switching DVI inputs.

I believe a power on of the PJ then HD-A1 is the best way to go.

Even with the above, sometimes SD DVDs still give me the HDMI error..then its time to fire up my Panny RP 82.

If you are using HDMI to DVI: It will most likely NOT work. I had this problem when I first got the player: for 5 hours I could not get ANYTHING except the HD logo, then nothing. I then switched to HDMI cable and it works perfectly. Basically; this HDMI business is a real HANDICAP. It is glitchy at best. DVI to HDMI is unreliable, so use HDMI to HDMI.

With a Panny 6UY Plasma and "Standby Powersave" set to on, I was consistently getting HDMI Error 1 with SD-DVDs. Turned that setting off on the plasma and SD-DVDs now play fine. The Panny was going into power save mode after 20 seconds of no signal.

Just wondering if there has been update to this problem. I have had the XA1 hooked up to my 4805 for 2 weeks now with no HDMI error problems untill today. Not that it is that big of a deal as I am upgrading to a new projector but I was wondering if anyone knows of any kind of a fix.

Not sure if this was the problem but I unhooked the optical audio cable and hooked up the analog cables again and now I have no HDMI errors and everything is working great. Just thought I would share that.

I think your Infocus projector works like mine, if you remove the power for an extended length of time it does some sort of reset on the HDCP. Power it and the HD-DVD player back up relatively at the same time and at least on my SP5000 it generally will always work again.

I just experienced this phenomenon last night. I'd been watching the HD-DVD of "Happy Feet" via component. Once it finished, I attempted to view "Charlotte's Web" over hdmi/M1. I made the input switch on the PJ first, and then flipped the video source on the HD-A1. The disc spun, was id'd as a DVD and then the dreaded HDMI ERROR 1 message flashed across the A1's display. I tried again this morning, powering up the 4805 first, making sure that the hdmi was selected, turned on the A1, and still nothing. I've got firmware 2.0 on the A1. I'll try again later. I've had HDMI-M1 since January and this is the first time I've experienced this issue. It's not too much of an annoyance since HD-DVDs look better to my eyes over component through the 4805. But since I've got the capability to upscale SD-DVDs, I'd kind of like to use it.
