talkingdeer 07-16-06, 10:55 AM I do not understand why they do not put out the same new videos as the SDdvds. Insted of going so retro. looks like They would go newest as it comes out and include the retro with it. If they do not how long will it take for the disks to become current?
So far I havent bought A player...too new , cost too much , and with my luck I would buy the one that gets canned and have all the cost of the player and disks flushed down the drain. I just bought a mits 57731 to be ready for the hddvd/br. which ever it turns out to be. and just did not seem wise to pay $2700 for a tv and then pay over 1/3 of that again for a player. I will wait. I remember paying $1400 for an old RCA VFT-650 4-head stereo vcr back in the day and 2yrs later they cost $130.
JBCricket 07-16-06, 11:07 AM I just bought a mits 57731 to be ready for the hddvd/br.

JeffAHayes 09-11-06, 04:45 PM Please pardon my underabundance of technogeekinesiness (trust me, when I work at it, I'm as technogeeky as the best of 'em, but I only work in one discipline at a time, and I'm just now getting into to the HDTV arena), but just WHAT is a "mits 57731"? I'm assuming "mits" is an abbreviation for Mitsubishi, and that's a model number, and maybe that's the $2,700 TV talkingdeer just bought, but since I'd have to do a websearch out of the forum to be sure, just thought I'd ask.
As for the dearth of titles, I REALLY can't see why anyone who's not just FLUSH with cash is buying a BluRay at this point... For THAT MATTER, I remember way back when VHS and Beta were still in competition, and new movie releases were anywhere from $30 up to $80, and the video rental business sprang up as a result, and the industry got all hot and bothered that they were losing bucks to folks who just rented, rather than buying, and made a copy while they had it... Then they realized if they dropped prices low enough they could sell dozens of copies to the rental places and still make a killing, PLUS many MORE consumers would be willing to buy, dropped their lawsuits and OVERNIGHT prices plummeted to where $30 was then the HIGH point and most were around $20 or less, and it actually WORKED (those Hollywood studios are run by some really slow-thinking types, I think).
I feel they're following the SAME TRACK with BluRay -- beginning with releases priced at 2 or 3 times the price of the DVD is NOT going to help encourage people to adopt BluRay. I know the new technology is more expensive, but as with all new technologies, a great deal of that is the result of R & D costs and start-up expenses, and the only way to EVER get over that "hump" is to do VOLUME, and the only way they're going to do VOLUME is reduce the prices of both the players and the movies that play on them.
My guess is this will be 2, maybe 3 years coming, but it could be faster if they'd listen to Nike and JUST DO IT.
Good luck with THAT.
Me? I seldom buy regular DVD movies unless they're like $5 or something I REALLY want and can get no other way -- like maybe a Pink Floyd video, or something... And I rarely even rent, because there's SO MUCH content on regular TV and the pay channels, plus now the few HD channels Charter carries, I already have to time-shift with Media Center to catch it all, and I STILL have some shows over a year old I haven't gotten to... So I'll likely wait until there are GOOD PRICES on BluRay RECORDERS and get one so I can RECORD HD, and BUY the occasional HD I REALLY want in HD.
I figure it'll be 2 or 3 years before that's viable for me, so things oughta settle out just about right, lol.
jacksonian 10-30-06, 11:51 AM Talladega Nights is still on this list for 12/12, but I got a call from EB Games saying that Talladega Nights would be included with my Playstation 3 when it launches 11/17.
Talladega Nights is still on this list for 12/12, but I got a call from EB Games saying that Talladega Nights would be included with my Playstation 3 when it launches 11/17.
I believe PS3 owners are getting it early.
I don't see the Magnolia titles on this list. They're supposed to be out tomorrow 10/31 (Bubble, One Last Thing, Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room, Bikini Destination, The War Within, HDNet World Report Special: Shuttle Discovery)
Kocheese99 11-01-06, 07:48 PM Got this from my distributor today. Here's a big list of Blu-Ray stuff coming out next year, some good stuff but some crap as well:
2/13/07
Broken Arrow
Usual Suspects
Princess Bride
Phone Booth
Planet of the Apes(2001)
Sentinal
Entrapment
Chain Reaction
Sisko197 11-17-06, 10:31 PM Noticed on the coupon pack in the PS3 that Chicken Little is listed as coming Spring 2007.
Chris Dotur 12-08-06, 09:55 PM Cool list, thanks! If nothing else, that's so great that you have the studios listed with each disc. now I can figure out which movies are eligible for the different coupons that came with my PS3. :)
A little late but I noticed Christmas Vacation was released on 12/5/06 and is not listed anywhere...
throwback559 01-04-07, 05:53 AM buy.com says Gridiron Gang is coming out 1-16 can some one confirm this ?
crakerhead 01-06-07, 10:44 PM anyone know when this post will be updated? maybe after ces?
JeffAHayes 01-06-07, 11:06 PM So Blu-Ray's out for what, 8 months now, the second player JUST came on the market and the FIRST one only recently quit selling for $1,000 (I've seen the Samsung as cheap as $599 online), and there are STILL only a total of 145 films listed for the format (including those going a full FIVE WEEKS into the future (according to the list above)???
Unless you're just FLUSH with cash, why is ANYBODY buying this? I'm still keeping my eye on the Blu-Ray burners (several of which are available as units to install in your computer rather than a second DVD drive (which is part of why I didn't get a second DVD drive with my new computer), and they're less expensive, list price, at least, than the Blu-Ray players, plus they'll BURN either movies or DATA onto the discs (although the ones available thus far look a little too BARELY CAPABLE with the Blu-Ray burning to suit me)... I might see getting one of those, since you can store massive amounts of removeable storage, as well, but JUST a player... with movie prices what they are... WHY?
Neo1965 01-08-07, 07:54 AM ^
Jeff,
Since you asked, this is why :
Consolidated of future BD releases (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=782217)
Can efralope update his list soon? The sticky list is nice, but should be updated regularly.
markrubin 01-09-07, 10:56 AM unsticking this thread: needs to be updated
JeffAHayes 02-04-07, 01:44 AM I was in Best Buy today to get my dad a birthday present (DVD of "A Prarie's Home Companion," which at $9.99 very NICELY fit in with my $10 rewards certificate and the gift card I had with a few bucks left on it, lol)...
Anyway, in looking for it I noticed they actually have one entire (slightly smaller) row of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs near the front of their video selections, right behind the row with the new releases... That DOES show a growing collection, although it's still rather limited and the prices ARE still about twice what DVDs cost.
I figure those of us who wait another couple of years will pay about half as much for the players AND the discs, and have A MUCH LARGER selection from which to choose (nice to see on that link you posted above, however, Neo1965, that even some very old movies are coming out on Blu-Ray).
I also noticed LG came out with a combo player recently. However, at $1199, I see that as sort of a lost cause, since if you can still find the original Samsung on sale, you can get it for $700, or less... and the HD-DVDs go for about $500, so you can have one of EACH for the same price and then if one machine breaks, at least you have the other.
I'm STILL waiting for a combo burner I can install in my computer, so I can burn data and/or HDTV, and also play any movies I'm motivated enough to buy or rent in one of the HD formats... Kinda wondering why Blu-Ray burners have been available for some time, but HD-DVD burners are still nowhere in sight, too.
Strange world, this high-tech universe, huh?
Jeff
