BCI announces their first HD-DVD titles
June 30, 2006

Independent film publisher BCI has confirmed its support for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray this year, bolstered by the announcement of the first three HD-DVD titles in 1080i resolution and hints at several others for a total of 20 by year's end. All their titles will be mastered by The Richard Diercks Company, Inc. (RADCO), a member of the High Definition Authoring Alliance.

On August 29, look for "That's the Way of the World" starring Harvey Keitel and Earth, Wind & First (yes, the band). Available audio tracks will include the original mono soundtrack or a newly mixed Dolby Digital Plus soundtrack. Extras will include a commentary track, photos, stills, TV spots and a collectible booklet.

Two weeks later on September 12, BCI will roll out a sci-fi spoof and a Japanese cult classic. "Galaxina" will include an audio commentary, interview, stills gallery, two complete scripts and a 20-page collectible booklet. "Golgo 13" will include a Sonny Chiba trailer showcase and offer the original uncut Japaneses version for the first time, as well as the first anamorphic widescreen transfer.

Additional Sony Chiba titles will be available later this year in the "The Sonny Chiba Collection" - all new anamorphic widescreen masters from the interpositive film prints. This collection includes titles like “Sister Street Fighter” presented in Japanese with English subtitles plus the English dubbed audio track.

Other upcoming HD-DVD releases to keep on the radar are "The Spanish Horror Collection" - featuring 7 films from cult actor Paul Naschy – uncut and remastered from the original negative including “Night of the Werewolf,” and “Vengeance of the Zombies” and "The Bob Hope Collection" - newly restored and mastered from the negative for amazing quality including “Road To Rio,” “Son of Paleface” and “The Lemon Drop Kid.”

BCI's first Blu-ray titles will be announced in time for the release of Playstation 3 in November.

Each title will carry an SRP of $24.98. For additional information and high-res cover art, click through the disc details links below.

huh? another company not able to properly use modern codecs? The use of MPEG-2 on these titles is just speculation (could very well be the case, but we don't know yet).

I'm really looking forward to the Paul Naschy and Amando de Ossorio titles.

Update (http://hkfilmnews.blogspot.com/2007/04/interview-with-bcis-cliff-macmillan.html):

1. What is BCI’s plan for next gen digital media such as HD and Blu-ray?

We plan to support all formats. When we announced our hd-dvd titles about a year ago, we thought retail would embrace quality titles at an affordable price, but they just wanted studio titles, so we put our plans on hold until the retailers devoted space for the independents. So, I hope we will have hd-dvd releases later this year.

When they first announced Galaxina I couldn't believe it. Hopefully it will see a release soon.

I'm skeptical. They announced titles with release dates, then pulled them without any explanation. I was seriously disappointed, and I don't think they are going to put out anything anytime soon.
