After many months of planning and searching the forum, I have finally started Wayne's World. I would like to thank everyone in the forum for giving the ideas to build. I built my wife her kitchen and the kid's a pool, now it's my time. Wayne's World is in my basement. None of the pre-framed rooms made any sense for a home theater so I framed a room myself. It's 19.5 x 15. The ceiling is 9' and under the soffits it's 8'. The soffits are 12"x 24", I had to cover the drainage pipe and make room for the hvac. The pictures below show my current progress. I hope to start the sheetrock tomorrow. I would especially like to thank Bud (Chinadog) for his construction thread and the materials he graciously gave me. I look forward to any comments, good or bad.

19.5x15x9 is a nice sized room. You'll have lots of options.

Enjoy the journey and plan ahead.

No diagram yet. I know I will have a 7' riser x 12" high and a stage but I have not planned the stage yet. I have the panny 900U that I will mount under the back soffit( 17' throw). As of now I'm looking at a 100 to 104" screen. The painted screens look interesting to me. The equipment will be in the back wall and I plan on having a hinged panel to cover.
I got the ceiling sheetrocked today, what a hassle by yourself.

I hope you have a drywall lift.
Rented one this morning and got the ceiling completed. The hardest part was cutting the holes for the six can lights. I know there's easier ways, but a paint can is a perfect match for my 6" cans. They came out great.

I won't be going to that extreme. My theater is located under the dining room and foyer so I'm not concerned about it.

[QUOTE=BritInVA]When did you start - looks like you've made some rapid progress.

I wrapped up the insulation last week(except for a few small pieces) Done the ceiling today. Its all glued and screwed.
Overall, I've been working on it about 30 days. I have the wiring about 90% completed.
I won't be going as fast as some in the forum

I'm about to sheetrock the walls and want to make sure everything I need is in place. This is what I currently have. Any more suggestions?

1- 20 amp circuit for equipment
1- 15 amp for lights and outlets
IR543 mini controller
Xantech 490 receiver for IR control
Cat 5 for IR control and to projector
3 Insteon dimmers. 1- 6 can lights, 1- 3 stage lights, 1 rope in trey
RG6 quad run to 4 locations for subs, 2 in front, 2 in rear
14 gauge speaker wire to all locations for 7.1

Projector Runs
1- HDMI
2- component
1- S video
1- composite

Not sure yet how to power the projector. Its 12 feet from the surge protector
Any suggestions on this would help too

Thanks,

Do you have power outlets at the sub locations?

For the PJ you shouldn't run the power cord in wall or in conduit. So suggest you put an outlet at the PJ mount, use standard romex back to the equipment closet and terminate on an inlet receptacle (http://www.twaathome.com/Catalog/Model_4937.htm). Then use an extension cord to plug into the surge protector.

I've got outlets at the sub locations, I just forgot to list them

Great idea for the projector power

Just when I thought everything was covered, I thought about speaker placement.
I'm good with everything except my side surrounds.
It will be 7.1 and the side surrounds are dipole. My riser is 10" high and 6'6" deep.
Under the trey on the side walls is 8'. Two rows of three coasters.
I'm thinking 7' high and even with the front rows reclined.
Yours thoughts

Wayne,

Question for you. Where are those insteons located? In the theater I assume. Is there a reason you didn't used the Carlon adjustable boxes? I've only seen two gang and single gang at Orange, so you might have to break them up into two boxes. I'm assuming you're going to do the linacoustic (since I gave you some!). What about your outlets in the room, you need to think about those.

BTW, got you subscribed now.

Bud,
The switches are on the right side of the door after entering. At the time I ran the electrical, I had not planned on using linacoustic behind fabric. Just panels on the walls. I'm currently reseaching the triple gang adjustable boxes, separating would help with the heat in the box as well. I started out with a simple plan and the more I read, the more I want to do. Funny how that works! Not doing a lot of work this weekend, the wife said I had plans??????????

Most of the sheetrock is up with the first coat of mud. As soon as I run the HVAC ducts I will finish the sheetrock. I bought the lumber for my stage and riser. I'm having trouble making a decision about the screen wall. The idea of making or painting my screen intrigues me. If I paint my wall, how do I build the proscenium out from the wall? Any ideas would be apprieciated.
The ductwork goes in this weekend and then the final sheetrock, then I can start building the fun stuff!

I finally got a chance to work in my theater this weekend. The sheetrock is finished and I have one coat of mud on it. The trey was a challenge but everything is coming together.

I have the projector mount area planned. The first hole is for the pole that holds the projector. The second will be for the wires

Your right. I just couldn't find anything I liked better. Anyway it's hard to improve on a great idea right? My trey will not be covered with fabric like yours. Looks like paint everywhere with acoustic panels and treatments behind the the proscenium.

I didn't think it was hard at all, but I totally agree on the paint can. Used it to trace all my can light cut-outs. Didn't ruin one piece of drywall. All ended up perfect. Between my rec-room and theater I had ~20 of them to do, worked great.

Keep up the good work!

Question 1
I'm debating on screen size, I would like some suggestions. This is my set up..
15 x19.5 room, 11" riser, 2 rows at 11' and 17', Panasonic 900 at 17'. Looks like I will be using 16:9 and currently thinking about 104" diag.

Question 2
Currently thinking about a screen height of 30" from floor, your thoughts?

Question 3
Speaker placement. I need to place my speakers on the outside of the screen, does it matter if the subs are next to the wall or next to the screen?

Thought about it too much, need different opinions.

Thanks,

chinadog

Wayne,

1. 104 is what I have and your length is about the same as mine, so you've seen that. You could go a little bigger if you really wanted to, although at about 10-11 feet now, that's plenty big for me. Gives you more room to play with for shape of stage/proscenium design if you include one.

2. I believe (I'll double check) that I'm about 30" from the top of my stage. Maybe 32". The stage is roughly another 8 inches. This is personal preference and depends on you your riser height as well. If you make it to low, you have to worry about people in the back row, the seat back heights, etc. If you like that height, make the riser at least 10-12 inches or better yet, use the riser calculator.

3. You can try some different spots for the best place or you can put it where you want and hope it sounds good there and live with it. Depends ont he room and sub. I had no choice but to put it in the corner, but am happy with it.

PICTURES??? :D

Bud,
Thanks,
I looked at the riser calculator and built my riser at 11". I began thinking about that because I don't know which seats I will be using yet. Do all seats have about the same height? My stage is a combination of of yours and Sandman's. It's 8" high. I will post pictures this weekend. I've been working a lot and just now got back to the HT.

As you might expect, seat backs will vary. They vary within the Berkline line. I probably should have gone 12" with the riser versus 8", but I didn't want a step. Hence the screen is a little higher, but its fine by me.

I finally got a chance to work on the HT this week.
This is the riser. Its 11" high and 7' deep. I wanted deep steps to match the isle between rows and the columns will fit in the middle

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l81/wbart4/Riser.jpg
This is the stage and the all important blue tape. I'm still thinking about how high to put the screen. This shows 33" from the floor.
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l81/wbart4/Stage.jpg
This is to show the space between both riser and stage.

Looking good! Is that opening in the wall above the riser for the rack? Stage has a nice shape to it. ny particular reason you decided on leaving the speakers exposed?

Bud,
The speakers will be behind a proscenium wall. Its hard to tell in my poor picture, but the stage is 24" deep in the middle(excluding the step) and 36" deep on the ends. The proscenium wall will be about 14" from the wall (this will cover my center and L&R speakers) and the screen will be in a 12" shadow box. The subs will be on the end and the Left and right speaker will be next to the screen.
The proscenium wall will follow the angles of the stage and be about 10" from the edge.
That is my equipment rack space and it will be behind a hinged panel (thats the plan now anyway)
Right now it looks like acoustic panels on the walls between 6 or 8 columns

Still working on all the details

I have finally had an opportunity to work on the theater again. The pictures do not show the wall color very well. Its actually a medium brown. I made the mistake of wiring all the equipment and hooking everything up. BIG MISTAKE! I watched more than worked on the room. All I need now is trim, procedium grills, Column grills and carpet. Camera lens was dirty but, heres the pictures.

Thanks Bud,
The one thing I forgot to mention. I still need to take care of all of my acoustic treatments. I will be treating behind the proscenium the same way that you did. I also will be making panels for the walls between the columns. The equipment rack will be behind one of these panels on hinges
