Does the video on deman require specific softeare to be installed on the host PC? or can it pull data direct from ftp/samba server?

Who makes the video chipset (mpeg decoder, deinerlacer, scaler)?

I believe that it is intended to work with media center PC's.

As for the scaler chip - I'm not sure. I have not been able to find anyone offering the unit for sale yet (very new). The last one (V880N) used a Sigma Designs scaler. Oddly enough, while the specifications page lists the maximum resolution to be 1920 x 1080p, the users manual simple states 1920 x 1080.

I guess we will have to wait for someone to review it. If anyone has one - let us know.

They didn't give me an answer for release date or if the V880dx would be replaced.

I loved my V880, it'll be interesting to see if they retain the custom resolutions.

But as a lesson-learned from the Snazio, if you're hoping to play back HD .ts files, hopefully the USB2 input will allow NTFS drives, instead of just FAT32. FAT32 is limited to 4Gb files and 30Gb drive partitions. 4Gb isn't large enough to hold a HD movie, so you have to mess with splitting the files... which is as bad as having to swap multiple DVD-Rs.

I'm curious (concerned) about the "14Mbps" MPEG2 (.ts) limitation. Is that just for wireless streaming, or also for wired ethernet networks and/or USB2 files?

If it does a good job with .ts files without requiring a scaler for 1080p or a PC for streaming, then it could be a lot simpler and cheaper than my current XBox360 + MCE2005 + LumagenHDP combo, which works sweet for deinterlacing .ts files to 1080p, but at 4x-5x the cost.

Seems like its using the Syabas Middleware which means that this is a Sigma 8620 Chipset. Just FYI all 8620's support 1080p, just that it works but doesnt work very well which is why many companies dont advertise this feature.

Is this region free?

This nifty machine is out of the works now. I am testing one.

So far so good. .TS high bitrate 15-20mb seems to play fine from DVD and network.
Video input is a nice feature, though because nog 50Hz output on HDMI yet, PAL input is FR'd to NTSC and that leaves its marks. Probably should test component 50Hz out to verify video input quality.

Remote has good range, but a bit strange. "enter" is below the navigation keys instead of in the middle. The on button is different as the off button (in the lower left corner??)

HDMI 1080 p looks real good, I have a gennum scaler for 1080i (on the HD81) and from seating distance, sorry, it must be me, I can not see much difference.

Changing HDMI resolution in the setup screens requires a manual reboot, not automatic as with the snazio.

Of course when playing DVD the Oppo and gennum scale and deinterlace better than the sigma chip, but that has always been the case.

Al I need is 50Hz modes on HDMI then the device is pretty ready for video enthousiasts wanting to play DVD DivX and HD.

I'll run some more tests later.

I have the V880, and while quirky, it performs very well. However, for that price they are asking for on the new one, you can go HD for less than that.

Well the V888n has some nice features others don't have.

Streaming Sigma Solution with hdmi (and quite stable syabas) and video input..

Does it play h264 files? Still waiting for network player with Sigma 8630 chip set or is this something that is planned for a networked blueray/HD DVD player?
