shawngf7 10-07-06, 10:15 PM Sorry about the problems. But would it be possible for you to post a few pictures of your 542i? If it closely resembles the LT42HVi, then it looks much better than the impression I get from Olevia's pictures on their site and the pictures on other sellers' sites. Thanks!
Will do. We're going to take pictures of the TV before we re-box to ship to SYNTAX- just to prove that there wasn't any damage from our side(putting a ping on the CC makes me nervous)- once we do, I'll post 'em.
EDITED TO ADD: Just got an email from NEWEGG that informed me that should SYNTAX fail to meet it's warranty burden(we don't anticipate this, but you never know) NEWEGG will forego it's bulk item return policy and will replace the unit.
badself 10-07-06, 10:29 PM So as far as I can tell, the specs are the exact same between the 537H and the LT37HVS. Does anyone know if there is an advantage to one set over the other?
Iamfalcon
I believe the menu systems are different, designed around updated firmware. The presence or absence of QAM may also be a material difference in these sets.
badself 10-08-06, 08:36 AM For anyone interested in the 7 series olevia with HQV, here is a good article about the processor:
http://www.hqv.com/news/VIP1000.cfm?CFID=CFTOKEN=896d9b0c3f8c916-27E59158-7E90-E2A3-B1CEC83BA4002946
This may be worth a look, also:

Folks who require advanced PIP and split screen features out of their new set might want to review this site in particular (i.e. click on "technology" and then "summary").
pseudojim 10-08-06, 01:07 PM Does anyone know the dimensions of the 542i without the stand and/or speakers? I want to wall-mount, and I'd like to know how plausible current owners think this would be with the 542i.

100% accomplishable... if you look closely on the Olevia website, one of their rolodexing scenes depicts the 542i (could conceivably be a 540i) wall mounted (with no speakers). However, this set weights about 90 pounds. I would not skip corners come time to install your wall mount. You'll have to hit studs capable of bearing that kind of mass.
Olevia sells you the wall mount on their site, but I"m fairly sure it's not proprietarty. A good Peerless mount would be equal or better for less scratch.
Regarding exact dimensions, I don't know. I do know olevia lists the screen area dimensions for the 747i directly in the pdf (i.e.width, height, diagonal), for a rough estimate, adding appropriately for the bezel. But really, I'm sure one of our 542i owners in the forum will get the info to you today.
While I'm on the subject of the Olevia website, nowhere on it can you purchase the speaker conversion kit to side mount the speakers on the 5 and 7 series sets? Has anyone seen it on their site, or elsewhere?
cjarrettgsu 10-08-06, 05:45 PM I am trying to upload some pics of my 542i. I took off the speakers but left it up so I would have room for my dvd player and cable box.

Wow that's much hotter lookin in person than the standard pics I've found online. Very nice C.Jarret!
Do you think you could lightne your room or use flash so we can better see the color/appearance of the bezel? Appreciate it! Thanks
cjarrettgsu 10-08-06, 06:27 PM Not a problem. Enjoy
tempetape 10-08-06, 08:48 PM I still curious about the picture quality between the 342 and the 542. I have Cox HD cable so I don't need the tuner. Are the LCD screens different between these two?
Thanks for any info!
betweenthepipes 10-09-06, 12:04 AM cjarrettgsu,
Is that wall-mounted? If not, how is it held on the stand?
Thanks.
mikeemusician 10-09-06, 08:46 AM I just recieved my 542i from Beach Camera, took it out of the box and nothing... Tried swithching power cords and everything(even the little power switch in the back). I am sooo pissed, and I seen it just happen to another person who posted the same problem the other day. Now I am just waiting till the offices at Olevia open and I am gonna SNAP!!
The only positive thing is that the TV looks awsome, just would have been nice to see a picture when I pugged it in.

Not a problem. Enjoy
Thanks a lot bro.
turbodub_6 10-09-06, 12:02 PM Hey guys,
This is my first post (long-time reader), so sorry if I'm stating the obvious...
I got my 537h about 5 days ago and LOVE it. It's my first flat-panel TV (and first entry into the HD world) and it's been amazing. I have it plugged into the wall through coax, and it picked up over 100 channels and all the local HD channels. Awesome.
Anyways, as for the power thing, remember that this TV seems to take over 5 seconds to "start-up". That is, I hit the power button on the remote, and after an unnerving 5 second wait, the Olevia screen pops up and the unit powers up. I'm just thinking that people may be hitting power, think that nothing is happening (when it's actually powering up), and then hitting power again, only to turn the unit back off before it even turns on.
Just thought I'd throw that in...if it solves one person's problem I'll feel helpful.
Cheers
Aero968 10-09-06, 12:36 PM After glancing at a few of these posts, it seems that the 537h has less glitches than the 542i. I've had the 537 for a few days now, and all I can say is "great"! I am not a videophile by any stretch, but my experience so far is as good as can be. Easy to hook up, easy to use, excellent picture. It's unfortunate about some of the issues popping up on the 542. I was debating back and forth over which one to get, but I chose the 537 because of space limitations. I am now contemplating a 542 and moving the 37" to the den. I may hold off a bit to see how some of these issues play out.
cjarrettgsu 10-09-06, 01:51 PM I left the tv on the stand. I just removed the speakers from the bottom. That may be why it looks like it is wall mounted. It has six screws, three on each post. The base is very big and very sturdy. It is as wide as the tv and about 12 inches deep. To the guys that got the bad units, that is terrible. Keep me posted on how they are with repairs. I also turned mine off before it got powered up the first time. Make sure that as soon as the blue light turns off, you leave it alone to warm up. If the blue light isnt on ever, then it is a power supply problem. If the blue light is on now, point the remote, hit power once and wait. If the blue light turns off, you should be in business.
shawngf7 10-09-06, 03:12 PM Called OLEVIA first thing this morning(that British phone tree chick is weird) and spoke to a very polite TS agent named Joseph. I explained everything, he said the problem could be solved by sending out an agent to do on-site(!). I've just emailed over my receipt and am waiting to hear that the ball is rolling. Apparently they ship me the parts I need and it goes from there...
I'm hoping that since OLEVIA is HQ'd in City of Industry, CA and I'm in Sac, CA that delivery via FEDEX will be a bit quicker and I can get this issue resolved post haste.
Mikeemusician: Any luck on your side? Seems like we're in the same boat.
tempetape 10-09-06, 10:43 PM I guess the 542i will have a better picture the the 342i.
I see some great prices on the 537H's. I'm wondering if the better picture of the 37" screen on the 5 series could be offset by having the 42" screen on the 342i.
Anyone know if the picture is that much better from the 5's? And then there is the issue of the brighter corners on the 3 series...
It's tough having Lexus taste on a Dawoo budget.
elgibby 10-10-06, 12:19 AM Has anybody used the VGA input from a laptop?
And what's the VGA-component input?
thx
phipp01 10-10-06, 05:18 AM Has anybody used the VGA input from a laptop?

You can get a cable thats component on 1 end and the vga on the other end so in effect you have 3 component inputs

Ah. So this is for a video card that has component video out? Or are you saying it's to hook up VGA from laptop to component input on the TV?
Question sounds dumb to me, too, but I haven't done much with computer/TV hookups!
thx
I just bought a 527v, and was wathing HD last night, and within 2 hours the screen went completely white twice, completely blue twice and then had vertical lines. Each time I still had audio. Each time I turned off the tv and turned it back on, and it was fine. Anyone have any idea what is the problem? I can return it within 10 days, and am wondering if I should do so. Thanks for any info!

Well.... First I called Beach Camera(the place I bought it from) and they SUCK! once the box is open your dead to them.... They just push you off to the manufacturer. Then I called Olevia monday morning, and was on hold for about a half hour and then finally got a TS agent on the phone and told him there was no power,ect... He said that they would just send me a new tv. He never really suggested to send an agent out to look at it. Weird..? If I were you, I would suggest them sending you a new TV because it's obvious we both got lemons and the TV will end up being serviced more in the future anyways.
The only positive part of this whole situation is that I had an option of giving them my credit card information(to insure that I will give back the damaged one) and they would send out the TV asap, then once I get the TV they would send someone to come pick up the broke one. This is great, because it would be a pain in the @ss to haul this TV anywhere to send it back to them.
I am still waiting for a call or confirmation that the TV is on its way. I tried to get them to send it overnight, but they only send stuff ground. I live in Wisconsin, so I thiink it will be sometime next week when I get my TV.
One last note the Technical Support guys are very nice and helpfull even though I wasn't a happy camper. My hats off to them.
Keep me posted on whats going on with your situation shawngf7
Golly- you have 10 days to return it so I would probably go ahead and just do that and get one that just works so you don't have to deal with the manufactures warrenty till after your ten days.
Elgibby- The component cable would plug into your vcr/dvd/whatever on one end then a vga adapater would connect to the tv. It looks like they are basically saying that if you connect your computer to your tv with s-vid/dvi/hdmi then you can still use the vga connection for another component connection if you get an adapter.

bd -- that's another problem. I tried connecting the laptop to the 537 via s-vid, but I couldn't get a picture. I toggled the laptop between LCD and CRT output, and nada....
Hey guys, i'm sure i should have just searched it out, but does anyone know how to actually change the settings or use the menu system on the 542i? I hit the "Menu" then use the "Enter" but always get to points where i just can't do ANYTHING1!!!
Elgibby, have you tried the s-vid from the laptop to any other monitors and had it work? it basically should just be setting the 537 to S-vid and then the laptop to outputting the signal (presumibly the "crt" output)
It's possible you need to change the resolution settings on the vid card on the laptop, but I wouldn't think so..at least I would think you would get an error on the 537 if it was just a resolution problem.
Have you looked through the setting of the vid card to see if there is anything in there that could help? (right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced- the maybe displays or monitor, etc for settings that may need tweaking)
Does s-vid work on the tv from other sources- dvd player, vcr..whatever?

Yes, the s-vid from the laptop works fine on my old Mitsu CRT TV.
I haven't tried s-vid from other sources to the 537, but I will tonight; good idea. maybe the inputs are faulty. And if the inputs are good, I'll mess with the res settings...
thx

Thanks. I called olevia and that is what they told me to do. Said it may be an issue with the digital tuner. Golly
AngrySquid 10-10-06, 05:48 PM 1080t,
I had the same problem with mine(see page 25), you need to go into the menus and find where you can change between "showcase" and "home." When you first turn the TV on it will ask you which setting you prefer, apparently you and me both accidently chose the "showcase" option. Choosing "showcase" will lock all the settings, while "home" will give you access to the settings. I forget where the option is listed in the menu system but I'm sure you can find it.
steveoz 10-10-06, 08:37 PM For anyone trying to play their Xbox over component video on the 542i, you'll want to turn off the "Cropping" setting in the menu. With the cropping on, it seems to expand the picture horizontally, so everything looks too wide. With the cropping off, the aspect ratio is perfect, and the Xbox looks fantastic.
Also, for anyone who's interested, I bought one of the 5 port HDMI switchboxes from Monoprice, and man, does that work great!! Logitech even had the settings for the HDMI switchbox's remote for my Harmony 688 universal remote, didn't even need to learn the commands. I was able to add it to my macros for switching between Watch TV (HDMI cable box) and Watch DVD (HDMI DVD player). Definitely resolves the single HDMI port quandry with the 542i. The switchbox is really small too, fit's just about anywhere. Right now, it's sitting nicely on top of my Sony center speaker.
Monoprice also has some excellent prices for HDMI cables. Wish I had figured that out before I went and bought the same ones off of Amazon for a much higher price, and triple the shipping cost.
westcoastnative 10-11-06, 02:48 AM I just set up my 537H. It seems pretty nice so far. I am having a problem with a non-progressive scan DVD player that I was using with my CRT. For some reason when I have it connected to component 1, I am getting a picture but it is in black and white. I have tried different cds and get the same results. Is this a setting or is my DVD player pooched. I also can't get CC to turn off even though I changed it to off. Any help would be appreciated.

Showcase and home is in the "Lighting Setting".
Does the 527v only have 1 RF port?

Is the CC off when you are on other sources?
For the DVD issue I would check couple things, make sure the tv is on the correct input, are you connecting through a receiver or anything? if so, try connecting the dvd player directly to the tv. Check the DVD players settings itself, I have seen some where you can change it between digital and analogue output and it will make if b&w if you are using the wrong connection for what it's set to (could actually be something like component vs composite/s-vid). Did you mean DVD's when you said yu have tried different CD's? CD's generally shouldn't have video so I have to ask, but I am assuming you means DVD's are possibly vid-Cd's. I hope you get it working. Most people posting so far were able to get their problems resolved with Olevia support when we didn't have a quick answer, if you contact them and they have a fix for you, please let us know. :)

I had the same problem w/CC and IIRC you have to turn it off with the CC button on the Olevia remote.....hope that helps
That's interesting about the Closed Captioning, so if you turn it off in the tv's settings for CC can you turn it on using the CC button on the remote? Or is the setting in the menu not really functional.
Haven't seen BroChaos in here for too long, maybe he could shed some light on this or pass it on to Olevia.
Are any of you seeing any other bugs in the tv?
Interested in the 542i but have a noob question:
How's analog cable tv picture quality on this TV?
suntzu7708 10-11-06, 02:50 PM Anyone know what the release dates for the 7 series are?

This is funny, I went through the same nightmare ... ;) My 537H got delivered yesterday, and I almost died when I noticed that the TV didn't seem to take any setting changes. Just before I was so happy that I didn't have any dead pixels, and now this - something else wrong with the TV ... Couldn't figure out what the heck was wrong, and finally called tech support. Luckily I got someone on the line before they closed, and boy was I relieved when he walked me through resetting the mode. He sounded a bit annoyed, bet it wasn'the first time he had to deal with this issue ... :p

stephenC 10-11-06, 04:17 PM Anyone know what the release dates for the 7 series are?I have not seen any firm dates. IIRC, the 747 is due this month (October 2006) and the 742 is due next month (November 2006). I'm open to correction from brochaos.
westcoastnative 10-11-06, 05:38 PM Has anyone noticed when you power this TV up it sounds like you just let a spring out a can.

BOING BOING BOING......... nope no spring out of a can with my 537......lol

I personally couldnt get it to turn off by the menu I finally hit the CC button on the remote and it went away so I was happy with that. Of course I never read the owners manual I personally hate the fact its on a CD-ROM. I would rather have a book in front of me to read....
phipp01 10-11-06, 05:59 PM Ah. So this is for a video card that has component video out? Or are you saying it's to hook up VGA from laptop to component input on the TV?

Sorry Elgibby I thought you wanted a 3rd component connection thru the vga...Thats what I was referring too. Other than that I would assume (which you are not supposed to do) it would have to do with your resolution setting or something to do with that
And what if you don't have a computer? But if it keeps the price of the tv down I will take my user manual on silicon rather than trees.
Thinking of getting either the LT42HVi or the 540i - any difference between the two besides size? I was trying to find out what video chip the 42HVi uses - is it the the same one the 542 uses or is it the one that the 3 series uses?
phipp01 10-11-06, 07:05 PM And what if you don't have a computer? But if it keeps the price of the tv down I will take my user manual on silicon rather than trees.
Ya know BD I thought the same thing but I guess I'm just used to the old way.....hold the book read what you what and make the equipment do what you want.......Guess that just shows my age....lol
Ryce, I believe the 42vi is pixelworks- last years chips. If it's between the 540 and 542HVI, then see which features you like the most between the two- BroChaos works for Syntax and said that the 540i is the same model as last year's 40inch (and not to get it) where as the other sizes in the new series have huge improvements meaning that the 542 and 42Hvi are going to be significantly different in features/quality. He talkes about it in one of the first 5 pages of this thread.
phipp01 10-11-06, 07:09 PM And is anyone else having serious issues with macroblocking on HDTV with the 537h?
Also on some channels I get the white line at the top and have to adjust the vertical position every time and with each channel it happens on....I guess this model doesnt save that setting after you adjust it....other than that my only complaint is I should have went BIGGER.....LOL.......seriously for the price and the quality you can not beat this for an HDTV.....
Phipp, lol- to me it just says you are over 20 and still not how to read (what a book is)... as much fun as it is to use a cd/pdf docto look stuff up, my preference is a book as well- so long as the TofC is decent. (table of contents = TofC for those who have never seen a real book)
Phipp01- Someone previously said the white line on the top is where the Closed Captioning info is being sent in the signal (I believe in SD channels, but don't remember exactly) It is in a previous post talking about that.
steelyken 10-11-06, 07:57 PM I have seen no white lines on my 537H, except once when the PBS channel was having a problem one day with the bottom 10% of the screen on top. That was a broadcast problem on their end and it cleared up the next day. I have seen macroblocking, but it was always with QAM cable channels and it was specific to some live broadcasts (Sports). Again, from what I have read, this is a common problem on the broadcaster's end and it doesn't happen on all of them.
phipp01 10-11-06, 08:31 PM Would a cable amplifier help with macroblocking or just overall picture quality? Steely im not using the QAM I have the SA 8300 HD-DVR. Sometimes Hd looks great other times (NBC specifically) look absolutely horrid and almost unwatchable.....BD I read that too about the white line but i get it on the HD channels when something is not broadcast in HD for instance local and nightly news on NBC and some shows on Fox....I just wish the TV would remember the vertical adjustment and not set it back to the middle when I swith the set off....
steelyken 10-11-06, 08:49 PM Try plugging the cable directly into the tv, scan channels, and see if you see the same picture problems.
Tenaku78 10-11-06, 10:08 PM I want to run stand def tv line and a feed from an antenna to the TV, if I use an A/B switch can the 5 series remember Air and Cable channels seperately or will I have to rescan everytime I switch between them?
westcoastnative 10-12-06, 02:22 AM I have had the 537H for two days now. The SD is good and the HD is really nice. I ran the autochannel search to pick up all of the non-scrambled stations. Keep in mind I have no cable box and it picked up a boat load of stations here using comcast. Some of them come in at 720P and 1080i and they look great.
This is funny, I went through the same nightmare ... ;) My 537H got delivered yesterday, and I almost died when I noticed that the TV didn't seem to take any setting changes. Hi,
I have exactly same probelm after I play the remote for a while, could you give me some hint about how to reset?
I've tried to call them last night but give up after I waited for half an hour.
BTW, anybody have trouble to install USB driver for this TV? my PC just cannot find the proper driver:(
westcoastnative 10-12-06, 12:50 PM I believe the reason the setting changes are not being saved is that when you select a setting using the remote you need to press the "enter" button. Notice that the color will change from a green color to an orange color once the setting has been saved. Then just menu out to the begining or go to the next setting you want to change.

flachbar 10-12-06, 01:50 PM I love my new 537H so far, but I ran into one for me very disturbing problem:
I have my HTPC connected to the TV via VGA (currently no DVI on my video card). When watching TV in my DVR software I would like to zoom 4:3 broadcasts to fill the whole screen, but none of the Zoom options seem to be available when the VGA input is selected !! I can only cycle between 1:1, Aspect, and FullScreen, which all don't do anything.
Is this normal ? Is there a way to use the Zoom modes with the VGA input ?
Thanks,
Dirk

on your Olevia remote, hit Menu, then use the up/down scroll keys to find PICTURE and select, then use the scroll keys to find MODE and select, then use scroll keys to find the POWER UP menu and select, then use the scroll keys to select HOME mode and hit the select or "enter" key.
Denon_Kid 10-12-06, 02:45 PM I believe the reason the setting changes are not being saved is that when you select a setting using the remote you need to press the "enter" button. Notice that the color will change from a green color to an orange color once the setting has been saved. Then just menu out to the begining or go to the next setting you want to change.
not for everything though. setting the sleep timer does not require a "enter".
Denon_Kid 10-12-06, 02:52 PM can anyone tell me (and others) what remote TV code works the Olevia 323? i have the silver cablevision remote that came with the SA4200HD box.
bump.
or, can anyone tell me which brand of television (rca, sony, hitachi, etc, etc) uses the same IR control as the Olevia ??
Denon- It used to be the brands like LG, Phillips, Samsung, etc.. but rumor from Brochaos (a syntax employee) is that the new 3/(4)5/7 series have descrete ir codes.
Interested in the 542i but have a noob question:
How's analog cable tv picture quality on this TV?
Anybody care to answer? Thanks in advance!
This has been asked before but we haven't gotten an official size. Can one of you 542i owners grab a tape measure and measure LXHXW of the 542i with the stand and speakers removed?
I don't have a lot of room on my mantle and really need to get some definite sizes of this thing before I order this week.
Thanks!

People have put their opinions in previous posts- probably around page 15 and newer. Most seem quite happy with the PQ of standard Def.
badself 10-13-06, 09:26 AM Anyone know what the release dates for the 7 series are?
The outfit from which I have ordered my 747i states I should not expect delivery before the end of October, and possibly as late as the second week in November per Olevia. The 742i will rollout approximately one month after the 742i, again per Olevia.

Derek K. 10-13-06, 04:14 PM Any update on the ghosting problems on the 523h? I haven't seen brochaos post here lately.
Also, I have a favor to ask anyone with a 537h. I would like to put a 537h in my bedroom cabinet, but looks like it is going to be a tight squeeze. The opening of the cabinet is 36.5". However the opening is smaller than the actual cabinet, which is about 37.5" wide. So, if the widest part of the tv isn't too deep, I should be able to angle the tv and slide it into the cabinet.
Could someone please measure how deep the widest part of the tv is for me? This way I can model it before I order one.
Of course if olevia fixes the 532h problems, I might just buy one of those instead and not worry about trying to squeeze it in, but bigger is always better! ;)
Thanks!
steelyken 10-13-06, 05:03 PM The 537H widest part is the screen at 36 11/16" and the widest part of its depth is the base at 10 1/2". The base is curved so that last measurement tapers off from the middle out.

I just got a 532H and I have no problems with 480i sources. Well worth the money for a bedroom TV. I have not tried component or HDMI yet. Only the internal tuner for HD and S-video for a Satellite receiver. SD looks great. Pretty sharp too and I have the sharpness almost turned off.

steelyken 10-13-06, 06:02 PM Sorry I didn't fully understand your question. The tv is 3/4" wide at the edges and tapers out to 5 1/2". here is a pic, and don't laugh at my feet.

shawngf7 10-13-06, 08:13 PM Ok- the 542i is up and running- the power unit had to be replaced.
And now I have two stupid questions- I did read the CD manual, but I failed to find the answer I was looking for- much to my annoyance(or perhaps stupidity).
Come Tuesday we're having Dish HD installed. Right now we have simply DISH and the received only allows Composite. The picture is kinda junky. And we noticed blinking at the top of the screen. Shifting the screen vertically seemed to alter that, but I wonder if maybe cropping isn't the better answer? Anyhow, beyond that and some color tuning, it is just best to wait for the HDMI cable to hopefully improve the overall quality?
And we have a Panasonic DVD player with an HDMI output going into the TV. How do you change it between 480/720/1080i - is there a menu setting there determines this(couldn't find it) or does the DVD and the player automatically assign.
My apologies for the idiotic queries...but I swear I did search for answers first.

I think you will be pretty happy with your set. The Syntax 747 and 742 will be one of the small minority of TVs that will pass the tests that Gary Merson just ran on some 60 different TVs:

I saw a Sony Bravia 1080p LCD TV side-by-side with the Syntax 747 running these same tests at CEDIA and the Syntax ate Sony's lunch.

Thanks for the good news. It's been difficult waiting for this set after two announced delays. There have been days I've felt like just walkinng into Costco to purchase the equivalent of the v2500 Sony and be done with it. Everything I've read and heard (but yet to see) about the Silicon Optix Realta puts it as the Bugatti Veryon of the video signal processing world. To the forum member looking for a place to order this thing, the only dealer I'm aware of who's taking this action is "Bright and Sleek", and only by phone, no internet orders, due to Olevia's wish to keep this set as uncommon as possible. Just google for their website to get telephone number. I've checked them out, they're reputable, with a written return policy that won't take one to the bank. Also, appreciate the link. :)
satirev 10-14-06, 09:29 AM I'm also waiting for the 747i. It's frustrating that I can't get more info on this set.
I've tried to ask Olevia but it's like a black hole. The specs on their site are pretty thin. For example, what is the color gamut? For a set targeting videophiles you would think they would have more information. Also, I plan to hang the set and I want to know the dimensions w/o the speakers. By now they should have a manual posted so we could preview the features and menu system. I'm not sure I believe the end of Oct delivery date. Like you, I may just end up going to Costco.

I asked the color gamut and backlight questions early on in this thread, to no avail. The contrast ratio of 1600 beats Sony's 1300 on the bravias, and if you compare it to the Samsung's "cook- the- books" dynamic contrast, that translates to 8000 (i.e. 1600 x 5) vs 6000 for the Samsung. If I didn't think the set will deliver, I wouldn't be waiting impatiently for it. I prefer the 46v2500 Sony over the xbr's by a wide margin, but it's a distant second choice because it can't handle two coaxial sources (cable and ota) without an a/b switch and menu changes every time you go from one to the other, and the fact that processing and deinterlacing are DECIDEDLY inferior. Still, I like the set. I wish I could wait a year, as I feel that material improvements in all these sets are imminent over time. Make no mistake, if my 747i arrived today, I'd still take delivery based on its superior processing/deinterlacing/scaling, and it's ISF calibrated out of the box.
tommy gunz 10-15-06, 03:52 AM For the 537H model, does anyone have a problem with Windows setting the default resolution to 640x480?? Everytime I start windows it thinks that's the proper resolution to use and I'll have to manually change it back to 1360x768. It is not a major problem , just a bit annoying that's all. I'm using a ATI Radeon9250 video card and connecting via VGA port.
phipp01 10-15-06, 09:41 AM Received my cable amplifier yesterday and installed it.... seems to have helped significantly with my macroblocking issues on HD. Last nights Nascar race looked awesome very little macroblocking now. Have to see if it helps with NFL today. SD improved big time also. Not bad for 30 bucks delivered. Also has anyone hooked up a SA 8300 HD-DVR with HDMI yet? When I did I could not get any audio so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Has anyone bought from Buy.com? If so would you recommend their services?
Thanks
elgibby 10-15-06, 12:35 PM Elgibby, have you tried the s-vid from the laptop to any other monitors and had it work? it basically should just be setting the 537 to S-vid and then the laptop to outputting the signal (presumibly the "crt" output)
I finally got to try the laptop to 537 via/s-vid again and ... it worked perfectly. I have no idea what happened before, I did the same thing AFAIK. !!
Thx for taking the time to help troubleshoot...

Awesome Elgibby! My guess would either be that the connection wasn't securely seated at one end...or of course the ever present imperfection(s) of computers rearing its ugly head, then going back to sleep
I want mine now! haha :D
Just curious if any of the newer Olevia TV owners who are using a DirecTV HDTIVO (10-250) have found a remote code on the Tivo remote that will turn the Olevia on/off and allow the volume controls to operate. I have the new 432v and I can't find a code that works. Tried the LG/Philips/RCA codes that the 432v manual mentions *may* be compatible...and tried the "code search" feature on the TIVO remote...but no luck.
Anyone? TIA
techgal77 10-16-06, 11:04 AM Out of curiosity, is the 537H the only model with the Olevia splash screen after startup? I just purchased it and find this a bit annoying after owning both the LT27HV and LT26HVE. I didn't notice any other post (in the past 28 pages) that mentioned any other 3 or 5 series model having the start-up/logo issues.
Also, the other problem I am having is when attempting PIP and/or split screen - as soon as I attempt another input, I lose any signal to the TV and have to go back into the menu - go full screen only again and cycle through inputs 2-3X until it works again.
Otherwise, it's a great TV.

The only universal remote I know of that will work with these TVs are the Harmonys. They apparently use a new and unique code. The Tivo remote will not work.
pavehawk 10-17-06, 10:36 AM Does any one have picture problems with a DVI-HMI connection to the new Olevias TVs?
I have a 427V and when I connect a SA3250HD STB via DVI to HMI cable to the Olevia 427V the display colors are shifted (bad colors). The picture looks bad, the people's skin is blue. The problem do not seems to be with the STB since I connected the STB to my Toshiba DLP (62HM94) with the same DVI-HMI cables and the picture from the STB is good.

Make sure you distinguish DVI-D and DVI-A. The STB is likely to use DVI-D while a computer would used DVI-A

Badself,
I'm waiting impatiently for these sets also. But you'd better re-check those contrast numbers. Note that Syntax says "1600:1 DYNAMIC Contrast Ratio" - not static contrast ratio. Syntax has not stated what the static contrast ratio will be for these sets. So the 1600:1 on the Syntax is the comparable number to the 6000:1 on the Samsung. This much lower dynamic contrast ratio number is one of the things that worries me about this set. But we'll just have to see what it looks like when it arrives.

You're right, Olevia does list 1600 as dynamic contrast, which would put their static contrast at 320, a figure which is inconceivable for this type of technology and this caliber of set. Unfortunately, there is no uniform standard across the industry for reporting contrast ratio, and companies like Samsung choose to show theirs specs in units that result in high numbers in order to fool unsuspecting consumers into believing their sets are five times as good as Sony, for example (i.e, 1300 vs 6000 when in reality Samsung's figure standardized to Sony is only 1200). By your logic, the contrast of the Samsung is five times better than the Sony, which is definitely untrue in the field. If the 747i's static contrast is only 320, then we'll all be wasting our money, and I'll be waiting another year for a 1080p lcd because none of Sony or Samsung's sets move me enough to shell out $3,500. I lose sleep over lots of things, I won't let this be one. My interpretation, in lieu of additional information, reads like this: Sony...1300, Samsung...1200, Olevia...1600. What does concern me is the lack of documentation for type of backlight system. The mere fact that a tier 2 manufacturer is putting out such a high end set is a contradiction, and that concerns me as well. I don't discount the possibility that this set may not live up to the hype, much like in my opinion Sony and Samsung 1080p sets have not. As you indicated, we'll know soon enough, but I still think this set is going to shine based on observations of folks who took part in CEDIA and the quality of processor being used. Good luck on your upcoming purchase. It really is a brave new 1080p world.

When you get the 747i, make sure you start an owner's thread for the 7 series. It has been tough following the 7 series with all the various Syntax tv threads.
I've had an Olevia LT32HVE for about a year and love it, am looking to get the 542i for the living room.
I got the 32" at Fry's but they don't seem to carry Olevia anymore. Any B&Ms in the SF Bay Area that carry the 542i so I can look at it before purchasing?
TIA

I had the 32HVE & loved it as well until UPS lost it while I was moving!!! So although I've been refunded, I still have to look for a new TV which sucks nowadays cause there isn't just one which really works well... Anyway like I said, I'm gonna wait till the 7 series and until then live with my friends 20" CRT... Aaaarrrghhhh!!! Talk about downgrading!! :(
Tenaku78 10-17-06, 10:19 PM I'm close to pulling the trigger on a 537H, but it seems every time I find the perfect TV some unsightly blemish shows up. steelyken 10-18-06, 09:13 AM Alas, there are no "perfect" TVs. This is true for all brands and all price points. There is not a single set out there that doesn't have some issues. You just have to thoroughly check out each one and find the one you can best live with. I chose the 537H after looking at several other brands and I am happy with the choice.

Ouchies, black levels are pretty important to me. Were the black levels still unsatisfing after you did all the tweaking?
I tried searching and I know I saw it before so I'm sorry to ask an old question, what do you lose by going with the 4-series instead of the 5-series? The only thing I noticed different on the 427 vs 527 was the color of the tv.

Was that confirmation through Bright and Sleek or Olevia? Thanks in advance.
westcoastnative 10-18-06, 02:20 PM I have had the 537H for two weeks now. I have been very happy with it so far. I have noticed one thing that I am a little concerned about and wanted your feedback. I noticed when I am watching SD TV at night, in the middle of the picture there is a white bar that goes across the screen. Not the entire screen but only the width of the picture. It is not very bright but I can see it. Is this caused by the way the picture is filmed, an issue with the signal from the cable company or an indication of a bigger problem that I should call Olevia about. I have not noticed it in 720 or 1080i HD.
Techaholic 10-18-06, 02:23 PM Was that confirmation through Bright and Sleek or Olevia? Thanks in advance.
That was through Olevia.
bone_fide 10-18-06, 02:24 PM I don't know if this has been covered yet, but if you want to use a universal remote with the 323V your out of luck. Here is the email response from Olivia regarding the remote codes.
"Hello,
We currently don't have codes for this new model. Regular
Universal remote will not work with our TVs. You can purchase a
Universal remote from us that you can program to control your other
device. A Universal learning remote will also work with this model and
your other device so it will allow you to control both device in one
remote. If we come out of the remote codes it will be posted on your
website www.olevia.com. Thank you for contacting technical support.

satirev 10-18-06, 03:01 PM You're right, Olevia does list 1600 as dynamic contrast, which would put their static contrast at 320, a figure which is inconceivable for this type of technology and this caliber of set.
I don't think that the 5:1 ratio is a given. Some manufacturers are using that but one could choose to use 3:1 or 2:1. An 800 static CR is definitely possible since that was the spec last year. Frankly, after watching the Sony I would not want a 5:1 backlight. BTW, Sony and Samsung share the same glass from a joint factory. The Olevia panel is clearly an LG/Philips. They are the ones quoting 1600 dynamic. Also, it is only a 72% color gamut. :(

Btw, are we sure that LG/Philips is manufacturing for Olevia & also where did you read the 72% color gamut thingy??

Is your color gamut stat based on the figure for the last known LG panel, or is that a stat released by Olevia for the 747i? Quite frankly, why are you still interested in this set despite the gross inadequacies you are certain exist with it? Do you have any suggestions in lieu of this set? For instance, my lighting conditions would not preclude a Pioneer plasma, despite my fear of burn-in. Should I be considering that, since the only othe lcd I could remotely entertain is the v2500 Sony? If the 747i is an oversized 542i with HQV, then the price premium makes it a clearly undesirable choice. I could just buy a 542i, save a bunch of money, and call it a day. I am not trying to be sarcastic, your concerns are actually forcing me to reevaluate, but I can't do that effectively by simply assuming the stats of the last known LG panel, and neither can you.
phipp01 10-18-06, 05:50 PM  I don't know if this has been covered yet, but if you want to use a universal remote with the 323V your out of luck.

Total BS I have the logitech harmony 659 and I have the Olevia 537h for a month now and both have worked flawlessly together. Numerous times it has been mentioned in this thread that the harmony's control the NEW Olevia TV's. Please dont post BS about this. Do your research and take it from someone who owns BOTH.....If you need a universal remote spent 60 bucks on a logitech and it will do everything you want.............
There's nothing to be gained by speculating as to what the numbers mean. The 7 Series will be here soon enough (well...not soon enough for me), and we will see what we will see. All I can say is if the production models of the 747i are as good as the pre-production model shown at CEDIA last month, I'll be a happy camper. The black level was very, very good. I heard people asking if it was a Plasma or an LCD. That should tell you something about its contrast.

Because I let my eyes be the judge, not specs. Seriously, where did I say gross inadequacies? All I said was the 1600 dynamic CR could be arrived at in different ways than you suggested. And it could look fantastic!! There is a lot more to video than CR. Have you watched a unit with 5:1 backlight? It is very distracting to my eye. Many people turn it off anyway which puts the Sony at 1300.
I had a sad face for the color gamut because I assume Olevia won't swap in a wide-gamut BLU. I read that Olevia is using LG for the 7 series and the *current* generation specs on their website match exactly the Olevia specs. Didn't mean to upset you.

I don't know whether the HQV will make this set or not. That is why I am waiting. If you only watch video, I don't think you need to worry about burn-in. I don't control my set (family) so plasma is out.

Harmony remotes are 'Learning' remotes, which the email does say will work. Sounds like the email is accurate from what people have said in this forum that have current Olevia models.
Aero968 10-19-06, 12:05 AM Whatever you do dont do a search or even read a few posts above yours to find the answer to your question
Dude, don't be an ass! If you bothered to read my post, you would see I was talking about the Olevia remote, not the DTV remote. I do not have a TIVO box, just the old Hughes box. I was referring to the Direct TV codes listed in the manual. I am trying to control the DTV box with the Olevia remote. Comprende?

glued2s3t 10-19-06, 08:00 PM Hello,
I recently bought the 537h and have owned it for about 2 weeks. Overall, I'm happy, this is my first flat panel HDTV.
Can someone tell me if its normal to hear noises from the unit upon startup? It's kind of a tink-tink sound from the back, like it's warming up. You don't hear it after its been on for a while. I also hear a low hum that is persistent even after its been on a while. It doesn't really bother me, but its there.
Thanks...
westcoastnative 10-19-06, 08:23 PM 573h noises
I don't know if it's normal but my set does the same thing especially when I have had the power turned off for awhile. I'm glad to hear it's not just me.

The Tink-tink sound most likely is normal, that does happen when some LCD panels are initializing/warming up.
If you listen to the hum, could that be from a fan inside the tv? do you hear it with muted/low volume from your seated position (basically more than like 3 feet from the tv) or do you just hear it if you are standing next to it- listening for it? If it's the latter, I would presume that is normal operation sound(s). If it's the former, then hopefully others in here with the tv's have better guidance on how the Olevia's perform/sound.
Here at work (computer/IPTV technician) I cannot distinquish any sounds coming from our muted tv over the hum/ambiance of the computers/florecent lighting/etc, but we only have a 20" non-HD Olvevia LCD...and that is listening with my ear within about 3 inches to the side/back of the tv.
phipp01 10-19-06, 08:33 PM I hear no hum or tink tink noise from my 537h.....of course I might be hard of hearing too......lol

I was thinking the tink-tink sound was probably normal, I just needed to verify it with someone who actually has or works with one of these devices. Unless someone else chimes in as it being abnormal, I'll not redeem the warranty just yet.
As for the hum, my hunch is its the power supply. Its a very similar sound you might get from a sub-par PC power supply, but its not that audible, And if the audio is not muted its hardly noticeable except if you have Wonder Woman-type hearing during silence moments. I can live with it.
Overall, great TV. Discovery HD is way cool!

A couple things you can try if it isn't supposed to be as loud/noticable as it is- since I think it should be totally unheard with out the tv muted or at least at a level almost for comfortable listening- is try only having the power connected (ie no dvd/cable/satalite/reciever etc), if it's in a surge protector try plugging into directly to the wall outlet (just to test it) and if it's directly to the wall all ready PLUG IT IN A SURGE PROTECTOR! I wonder if something isn't grounded correctly or something like that.
Eh, I don't know...let's get some more replies people on whether this is normal or not! Brochaos??
phipp01 10-20-06, 06:26 PM I put my ear right next to the TV and turned it on an off several times I had no noises except a small humm when the TV turned on. Now the SA 8300 HD-DVR the hard drive itself makes a lot of noise....And it sitting on a wooden shelf actually makes the noise from the STB more noticable. Other than that I seriously have no noise from my 537h when I turn it on
steelyken 10-20-06, 08:17 PM No hum whatsoever from my 537H.
Any 537H owners getting true Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC-3) from the digital audio outputs?
Buckeyefan 10-21-06, 12:08 AM All and all though, how's the black level and Motion blur from this series? I know it's listed as 8ms, but who knows what scale they use to measure.
Just watched the WV/UConn game on ESPN HD this evening on my 537H. The picture was stunning, and the motion was perfect. No crawling like you would witness with a monitor (moving the cursor slowly across the screen). The new Idea technology chip really works. I've put all the options to work, and the chip really gives plasma a run for the money. I also watched a bit of Charlies Angles in HD, and the quick action scenes were perfect. What is really nice about this Idea chip, is that it also helps out with the SD channels.
My only wish was that they made the bezels piano gloss black, instead of flat black. That really brings out the picture in competing models.
BTW, no hum either on my set. How would I notice, with that noisy 8300HD DVR churning along.

Anyone care to list thier settings?
fyrmedic707 10-21-06, 03:26 AM I need to know, before I pull the trigger on the 537h - How does this model do with a PC connection??? I have seen the Westy 37w3, and was very impressed with that PC connection (DVI). I am kinda concerned with the VGA connection on the 537. I play a lot of FPS games (BF2, F.E.A.R., COD2, COH). I was wondering if there is any lag/ghosting when playing these types of games on these new models? Any help would be great, as I am looking at my current Panny 21" CRT with a green upper left corner, and need to replace it asap. :D

Just got my 537H from Newegg yesterday. Plugged it in, turned it on and there was a big black cloud shape with a white dot in the middle and jagged lines eminating from it. It appears it was damaged during shipping. The thing is the panel looks perfect untill you power it up. Called Newegg up and they immediately stated their Bulk shipping policy of no returns and that I should contact the manufacturer. What really makes me mad is Newegg did not use any additional packing and shipped it in its original container. The only protection between the panel and outside world is a thin piece of cardboard. Olevia will send me a replacement but now who knows how long it will take. Although I have used Newegg many times in the past with no problems I will never ever buy anything from them that falls under the Bulk shipping catagory. If I were you I would try to buy local even if you have to pay more or find someone that will allow you to make a return. I'm not a very happy customer right now!

You have to give Olevia credit for shipping a new one. It's also Olevia's policy that you deal directly with them and not go back to the retailer. Even with dead units on delivery. My Olevia was shipped in its original shipping container the same as yours and from a different retailer. Large products like this never get repackaged in my experience with shipments that are this large.
Think I'm finally sold on the 537H, has anyone had trouble with Newegg?
I ordered my 537H from NewEgg on last Sunday and it arrived on Thursday. Couldn't be happier.

I purchased mine locally, and was surprised the lack of packaging near the top. That's horrible about Newegg and the BS bulk shipping policy.
Suma,
I changed the color temp from 6500k to native, and it seemed to help in my room. I've also got all the Idea options turned on, and it's amazing the difference. SD DVD's look great. Childrens cartoons in SD also look outstanding. On some of the HD major networks, there is some snow at the top of the screen. All you need to do is go to picture, and adjust the screen vertically.
I did notice some HD channels coming off my TWC 8300HD DVR box weren't as strong with this set compared to my old Toshiba 36" CRT. I'm not sure why I'm getting macroblocking, since the tuner is built into the 8300HD DVR. I've got it hooked up via component (I don't think I can use the HDMI output in the 8300HD DVR - is TMC fixing this???)
Frymedic,
The only crawl you would notice would be dragging a cursor, or something very slowly across the screen. Most medium to fast moving objects are impossible to catch. You'd almost have to do it at a snails pace. Just make sure your video card accepts the 571's native size.
This is the 4th Olevia product I've purchased in the last few years, and all sets have been wonderful. The only issue I've had was one rebate that took several months to get back. This last set was purchased locally with no rebate at one helluva deal. I'm sure local retailers that sell Olevia will offer huge discounts on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Keep your eyes peeled.
Following up on my question as to where to see one of these in person in the SF area, it now seems like most e-tailers are out of stock on these also. Is there some sort of production delay on these sets? It seems like a wave of them went out and now they are pretty scarce.
TIA
Matt

Look only about 1-2 pages back, and I'm sure you'll find answers to your questions. I dont even have this TV, and by looking for only a couple minutes on these threads, I know these TV's have a "showroom" mode that basically blocks these TV's from being tampered with. You can easily search and find how to disable the showroom mode in this thread.
Also - do keyword searches in this thread for answers to yuor other questions.
Cheers

Buckeyefan 10-21-06, 10:16 PM Any of you know why a DVD/VCR player in VCR mode wouldn't work with the 537H? The DVD player works fine. The player is hooked up through my Denon 3805, then routed to the tv via component from the Denon. Does it have something to do with a 480i output? I've checked all the options for output on the TWC 8300HD DVR tuner. I'm clueless.

I may be wrong but I do believe it was reported in this thread by BroChaos that the 537 does come calibrated from the factory.....I'll have to double check. I looked at Olevia's website but there is no mention on the 5 or the 7 series. And if I am wrong thanks for correcting me badself.... :)
phipp01 10-22-06, 07:53 AM glad to see another positive review. i guess that makes it 2 for 2. i never realized that while the calibration menus are good (you know where you originally started from), it does make it difficult to share your settings with others. i'm not sure if thats something that can be added in later, but i will pass it along. it might be a long shot though, becuase you really shouldn't have to change the settings out of the box, unless you like to make non-standard personal changes. this tv's default settings are already calibrated to avia and DVE standards.
Does post #104 from BroChaos mean I am right? :D
badself 10-22-06, 09:37 AM Does post #104 from BroChaos mean I am right? :D
After reviewing the Olevia website again, I'd have to say I'm wrong and you're correct in claiming 6500k calibration out of the box for these sets. Too bad Sony and Samsung can't do that with their high-end sets, let alone their entry level offerings.
jonkras 10-22-06, 11:24 AM I am looking at getting a new HD set, and am very impressed by the 747i, especially since they included the Teranex video processing. I am trying to compare that to a Panasonic TH-50PH9UK with a DVDO VP30 processor (I can get a deal on that). I especially want to watch sports with whatever I get. Here is what I see as the advantages for each unit (am listing each category generically without listing numbers, deep discussion of features, etc).
Oleiva:
Integrated video processing (including 1080i deinterlacing)
Richer colors
1080p resolution
Panasonic:
Slightly larger screen
Better contrast ratio and viewing angle
Better with high-speed motion (such as sports)
Less reflection (is this true?)
Am I missing something? Also does anyone think there is a better deal in the $3K arena that would include high quality integrated video processing (Sony??). I am currently leaning towards the Olevia.
Thanks
phipp01 10-22-06, 12:10 PM I bought the 537h Olevia and I love it but my first choice would have been a 42 Panny commercial model but unfortunately I couldnt swing the 2500 dollar price. What I do like about the 7 series Olevia is the 1080p resolution and the realta processing chip is supposed to be the best in the business. Just my 2 cents
Buckeyefan 10-22-06, 01:29 PM Been a long while since I've had one of those dvd/vcr combos, but don't you have to hook up the vcr half with rca cables???
Yeah, it's hooked up from the VCR half of the combo player to the back of the Denon's VCR composite inputs.
How's the sound from the factory speakers? I know the LT37HVS has some great highs. I've bypassed my units speakers for 7.1 surround.

Motoprof 10-22-06, 02:39 PM Buckeye, if the Denon is upconverting from the composite inputs to component output you'll probably run into problems with many videotapes. It's because of the copy protection built into the videotapes rather than a problem with the TV. The only solution that I know of is to run separate composite outputs to the TV just for videotapes.
techgal77 10-22-06, 02:44 PM I am having a problem accessing the auto-channel search in the OSD. According to how the manual had it - it should be between firmware version and factory setting by input. I can see the little TV icon on the OSD wheel but it never becomes an option. I have the TV connected via component to my cable box and I wanted to have a 2nd input of HDTV OTA antenna. So far, hooking up the antenna and choosing tuner isn't receiving any input so having auto-channel search would be great to see if I'm picking up anything.
Thanks all.

I had the same problem as well except i used a splitter to run the cable to the tuner input so i could use the STB to record 2 shows while I watch a 3rd show...I believe you choose tuner then autoscan IIRC...I could be wrong (believe it or not its happened before lol) :)
Can see a white line during some SD broadcasts like another poster mentioned
Olevia's site doesn't work (no manuals or firmware)
HD QAM stations that come in look awesome, no STB, just standard Timewarner Cable feeding me QAM and SD analog. No boxes!!!!!!!
Cannot type in 4-digit channels via remote (very annoying). Future firmware fix?
Tuner automatically found them, but I have to scroll to get to them.
Sight digitization on HD channels via QAM from Timewarner cable Austin, TX
Have not tried rabbit ears but signal is reportedly better. Maybe it fixes the digitization during fast movement like football games.
Blue standby power LED is obnoxious. Paint over or cover with electrical tape.
Good buy for the money, but would be disappointed if I had paid more than a grand delivered, no tax. Thanks Newegg. Their bulky item return policy is a crap shoot though... Olevia's box is not well protected.
Very slight black fading in corners at high viewing angles, vertical seems more sensitive, but this is not an issue so far. Viewing angle just as good or better than all other LCD's I have seen in the store regardless of size or price.
1080P not supported, but no one broadcasts in 1080p so who cares unless you have lots of 1080p sources like HD-DVD.
Haven't tried computer hookup yet, but HDMI to DVI converter would be required unless you use the VGA input.
After playing with remote, it became apparent that split screen or PIP with one input as Tuner forces the other input to be HDMI. Example being Tuner+VGA would not work, but Tuner+HDMI would work. haven't actually tried it though...
10 seconds to turn on (boot I guess)
~2-3 seconds to change channel, but you can skip thru faster if you don't wait for the picture to appear.
Anyone got a LIVE link to the manuals or latest firmware revision? Olevia's site is down. Not a good sign.
Anyone know how to type in 4-digit channels with the remote?

phipp01 10-22-06, 04:51 PM jg7 yes thats me that posted about the white line I guess its the CC or something like that that causes it I have to adjust vertical picture to elimate it every time
badself 10-22-06, 04:59 PM I am looking at getting a new HD set, and am very impressed by the 747i, especially since they included the Teranex video processing.
Thanks
I've ordered the 747i sight unseen from an internet dealer out of Florida, albeit a reputable dealer with a solid written return policy. I, too, would have liked to see the set in person before purchasing, but I know of no brick-and-mortar store that will display the unit once it releases (hopefully within the next two to three weeks). Several other folks who participate in AVS have also ordered, perhaps one of them can direct you to a dealer who can show you the set in person. I did another google search yesterday on the 747i, and three internet dealers (other than mine) come up, each with lower prices than what I'll be paying, but two of them are entirely unreputable, and the one that is doesn't even show the set on their site having looked. For a couple hundred dollars savings on delivered price ($200 actually), I'll stick with the reputable and authorized dealer. My real point here, is, the 7 series is closer to release than ever.
I'm not qualified to compare this set to the plasma you are considering because I'm not a plasma person and I haven't researched the Panasonic you're considering.
Aside from burn-in, my other concern with plasma is reflection and it's also a concern for me with this 7 series Olevia, which will also have glass in front of the panel, though Olevia states it will have state-of-the-art coatings to minimize or eliminate reflection. The color gamut and backlight on the 7 series is apparently not highest in the industry in terms of specification, but those that are (such as Sony xbr and v2500, Samsung 95 and 96 series) fall short in terms of processor, and what I've seen in person has not thrilled me enough to buy any of these sets, though they may still turn out to be on par or better than the 7 series. I guess, by my actions, I'm betting that the Olevia with HQV will elevate sd picture quality and support hd picture quality that beats everything else currrently available in the 1080p lcd world. The viewing angle on the Sony, Samsung, and Olevia is 178 degrees, but there may be some color degradation beyond 35 or 40 degrees. How do plasmas compare in that area? Response time of 8 ms. is the current standard for lcd, but if the 7 series is prone to motion blur, I won't know till its in my home. Some (though few) have reported minimal motion blur in their Sony or Samsung, but not always in response to sports viewing (sometimes it has been reported in relatively slow shifts in facial motion and none/almost none in fast sports scenes such as hockey or the pitching of a baseball). The specifications do not always tell the complete story.
To answer your question, no, I don't think there is a better 1080p lcd in the current or near future for about $3,500 that will give the 747i a run for its money, but it is strictly my opionion based on the information I've reviewed and the sets I've accessed in person (and none of them with the signal feed they'd get in my home), and I'm sure part of my opinion serves to justify to myself the set I've chosen. Sometimes I feel like I'd be better off sinking the $3,500 in a newer vehicle, and looking for a set again in a year, but I'm pretty sure I'll have a new lcd in the family room prior to Thanksgiving, and 99% sure it will be a 747i. Thanks.
Buckeyefan 10-22-06, 05:04 PM Has anyone experimented with the different color temperatures? I've found the 9300 is much better for bright whites than the 6500 or native resolution. This is especially ture when watching NFL. The games on right now in HD look so much better in 9300 then native or 6500 (factory setting).
Does everyone have issues with the "snow" at the top of the screen on some major network HD channels with their TMC box? It's not been an issue with the last LT37HVS set. It's very annoying, and always resets when I adjust the vertical alignment when the tv is turned off/on. Is there some way to save this data?
Did Olevia overestimate the size of the screen, and does the download firmware fix this? I'm sure the answer is in this thread, but I'm new to the thread, I just don't have time to read through 900 posts.
BTW, football in HD on this set is breathtaking!
Thanks in advance. :)

Everything there is to know about the 747i has been aired out in this thread. There won't be any testimonials for at least 3 weeks as the first release is not due to occur until about November 10.
phipp01 10-22-06, 05:51 PM Buckeye the snow at the top is the CC creeping in or something like that....its been discussed here not in detail but it bothers me too that you cant save the setting. Mine usually happens in SD and when the HD channel shows something not filmed in HD

Have you downloaded the firmware from the site yet? I wonder if that corrects it. If not, I wonder if I contacted Olevia if they could add that to some type of download that would fix the problem. It's my 4th Olevia, so they owe me something. ;)

Hi Guys..
Ordered my 537H from JR a couple of days ago. I turned the TV on today and noticed a verticle line across the screen. It appears in all inputs. I turned it off and on and still there. Is this a defective LCD?! I only had the TV for a couple of days! This is very disconcerning!
Anybody have any idea what this may be?
Thanks,

Correct.
Ungermann 10-24-06, 01:56 PM When I finally made my decision in favor of LCD over plasma, it was because of two main reasons:
* Burn-in resistant
* Non reflective surface
Seems like Olevia is literally 'shooting themselves in the foot' for opting with glass on their 'high end' LCD panels.
Besides looking for a flat-panel TV I am also in the market for a new laptop, my current one is manufactured in 1998 (yikes!). But I cannot find a new laptop without a freaking "contrast-enhancing" coating that glares exactly like glass! Who told them to stick this shiny coating on? This coating is totally non-ergonomic. I guess the sad truth is that in 2005 laptop sales finally outsold desktop sales, this means that laptops are now bought by anyone. In the olden times laptops have been purchased by either computer geeks or by those who really needed them. Now everyone wants a cutsy little laptop and of course, the more it shines the cuter it looks. The vendors simply follow the "cute sells" trend, they even offer now different colors for casing. Laptops became a commodity, a cute toy like a cellular phone. This is all sad, a computer professional cannot get a normal laptop now.
The same thing happens to HTDV. When HD set were sold for 10K, only videophiles were buying them. Now everyone wants a flat-screen TV that hangs on a wall. The forecast is that to the end of this year as many as 50% of american families will have flat-screen TVs. Of course the same taste prevails here as well. Cute stuff sells, just like faux wood or faux aluminum for the cars or faux bricks to cover carton house walls. Fake and shiny - this is stuff that is sold better in this country.
I am pretty sure that the stupid trend of covering non-glare LCD panel with glass to "enhance contrast" and to otherwise "provide more pleasing experience" is coming to TV industry too. Which is why I am sitting on the edge of the seat. I still want to get a better (and larger) LCD TV with improved internal circuitry (this is what Olevia nailed right on, they got Realta chip, whoa!), but the moment TV manufacturers start switching to glass-covered LCD panels en masse I will run to the store and grab the last LCD TV without glass that is left.
Let's wait and see how reflective Olevia's "non-reflective" glass really is. The one I saw at CEDIA didn't suffer from glare. That may have been attributable to the high ceiling lights of the hall, but maybe not.
phipp01 10-24-06, 05:44 PM "The same thing happens to HTDV. When HD set were sold for 10K, only videophiles were buying them. Now everyone wants a flat-screen TV that hangs on a wall."
Well personally MINES NOT hanging on a wall and I didnt buy mine to go with the mass's. Why should I buy a 34" CRT TV that weighs 220 pounds when I can buy an LCD that weighs 72 pounds????? Did I buy mine because "everyone was buying LCD??? NOPE!!!! I bought mine after thoroughly researching LCD and plasma for 1 year. So not everyone is buying the "cute sells" BS. If you have a problem with your laptop this is NOT the thread or I believe the forum to be airing your RANT in. I could care less about what other people want and buy. I bought what was best for me. Period end of story. Go back to your laptop and look at the glare while I watch my non-reflective LCD TV.
bone_fide 10-24-06, 10:08 PM
Total BS I have the logitech harmony 659 and I have the Olevia 537h for a month now and both have worked flawlessly together. Numerous times it has been mentioned in this thread that the harmony's control the NEW Olevia TV's. Please dont post BS about this. Do your research and take it from someone who owns BOTH.....If you need a universal remote spent 60 bucks on a logitech and it will do everything you want.............
I'm so glad that the email from Olivia is Total BS, because I'd just like to adjust the volume with my cable remote instead of having to keep the TV remote on my desk too. But I DON'T want to spend $60 to do that when all other manufactures provide remote codes so a universal isn't necessary.
jackg74 10-25-06, 03:07 PM The manual says that a list of fixed issues accompanies firmware updates for their LCD TV's. I recently purchased a 537H and checked the site and a firmware update is availible but no mention on fixes. Any opinions on whether I should update, even though I'm not having any real issues? Will it in any way improve quality of the picture? Any thoughts would be appreciated. It came with version 060526B and it looks like 060831C is availible.
Can you save the current firmware version? (ie back it up to your computer). If so, I would say do the update and if you have problems you can roll it back to the current version.

justinblair2 10-26-06, 04:13 AM I downloaded the firmware released on the 10th for the 527V and i cant seem to get it to work. Also i have the white "snow" on my SD channels as well, except i've got two and sumtimes 3 of them. Top - middle - bottom..Almost makes watching SD unbearable.
Sinatrafan 10-26-06, 04:36 PM Does anyone know if Syntax has created a firmware fix for the ghosting and judder, and the other problems associated with the ATI chipsets in the 432 and the 532 models ? Thanks..~

So the firmware update didnt do anything to resize the pic frame to eliminate the snow, eh? That really blows. What did the update do? Could you tell?

I actually couldnt get the tv to pick up the firmware. Is what im saying, i did it step by step, but i didnt use a 128 flash drive, i used a 64 but i dont see where that would matter because they file size is well below 64megs. What im saying is the file (firmware) i dowloaded seems to be incomplete. There was more files in the 537 firmware. Like a flash, and sum other stuff.

I have a 537 also. I just checked the site again and they've updated it. They now list the changes made with each firmware update. IMO the most recent updates dont even warrant the time it takes to go through the process.
Now, if they could set it up with direct access to inputs (as opposed to scrolling through each) I'd do it.
Buckeyefan 10-27-06, 12:55 PM I just heard back from Syntax. Here's what they suggested to fix the snow at the top of the screen, as well as improve a signal from the HD cable box (mine got worse compared to my other tv for some reason):
1) Go into the SCREEN menu and turn on the CROPPING, doing this will
get rid of the white line at the top of the screen.
2) Weak signal? Usually will be a weak signal problem it will be
something to do with the cabling, make sure it's as far away from
electrical cables as possible
(my note... that's quite impossible, as every component near the tv set has a power cord  )
3) If settings are not saving when you turn the TV on make sure while
the unit is off that you keep consistent power to the unit. Also you
want to make sure that under PICTURE-> MODE-> POWERUP, that you have it
set to HOME.
P.S. When replying to this message please leave the original message so
I have history of all information given and received for your case.

Buckeyefan 10-27-06, 01:17 PM Update - just tried the cropping. It only crops a few milimeters and didn't get rid of the snow.
BUT... I did experiment with the different aspect ratio's, and guess what. PANORAMIC works! It cuts maybe a quarter inch off the picture, but you can't tell, and it got rid of ALL the snow !! I turned the set off and back on, and it did save that setting.
That's a huge relief. :)

"Upselling"? Is that the term I should've used?
I was talking about the following promotion from beachcamera:

Thanks.
I know the 7xx series uses LG-Phillips S-IPS panels (my favorite). I am fairly certain the 5xx series does as well, and I found a post from someone who said Olevia support confirmed it. Although I am pretty sure Olevia uses S-IPS throughout their entire line, I am less certain about the lower-end series (3xx).
Unfortunately, the new Olevia web site doesn't tout the panel type, but I assume you can just call their tech support and ask (and please tell them to put the info on the web site!).
CPotatoe 10-30-06, 02:01 AM I just recently purchased the 537H from BeachAudio using thier "upgrade to" link. I received a recipt the next day and then a shipping comfirmation 2 days later with a tracking number. It came to my house undamaged.
The set came with 060526B firmware version. I spent a couple of days thouroghly checking it out and found a few anomolies. I then went to thier site, registered the set and was able to access the firmware updates. All the anomolies I saw were in the "fixes" discription. I use the PiP function alot, so the latest firmware should fix most of the problems I'm having so far. It's worth doing the upgrade IMO.
I DL'ed the software and like an idiot I used the newly purchased set as my primary monitor to do the upgrade. Lo and behold, the set turned off, as I suspected it would. The problem was that there are 2 steps to complete the upgrade, with the set off now, I was unable to monitor the update and was unable to click on the "2nd step" button. I paniced! tried to get my other monitor connected to no avail. The new set will not power up at all now, due to the firmware getting erased in the first step of the upgrade procedure.
Fortunately, Olevia is sending me another unit as soon as they proccess my CC "hold " request form (which needs to be filled out and faxed back) through tech support, so they can send me a unit out before I have to send them back mine. The whole proccess was very easy, once you get to a tech. This is one of the reasons why I got the set from them. A happy camper for now.
P.S This set does have QAM, regular cable and over the air capabilities with PiP to boot. Gotta love it! The manual says you can pick any source for the main and sub picture, but I only had the chance to use the HDMI and tuner pair before I screwed it up.

Yes, I purchased through BeachCamera - ordered about 3pm and received it by 11am next day (this was with their free 8-10 day shipping) - of course, I am also in NJ like the store. It came undamaged. I've had it about 3 weeks now and love it. Just make sure you mention to them you want the cheaper one if you call them (I had questions otherwise I probably would've ordered through the web link).
I've been shopping for a sub 1K 37" LCD flat panel. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on the Olevia 537H. Buydig has this listed for $995.00 shipped.
Is this a fair price? They seem to have great reviews and the customer service has been great about responding to questions. Any feedback on the TV/price or vendor would be appreciated.

The above posts in this page indicate that the experiences with both the product and the company have been positive. You will find more information regarding the 537H in previous pages.
Also, I don't think you can discuss pricing info here. I got my first post deleted because of the same thing.

Can someone explain (in easy terms) how the connections need to be set up to receive QAM and "over the air" on the 537H? I've been trying to do research on this and it's too basic, I'm assuming, to be readily available. Thanks.
stephenC 10-30-06, 12:25 PM minguy - There should be coax cable connectors on the set. You will screw on or maybe push on the coax cable from your cable company for QAM and you will connect your antenna coax cable to the Ant In connection on the set. You will probably need to run a scan for channels procedure for the set to tune to the OTA digital (ATSC) channels. You may be able to download a PDF from the olevia.com website with the manual for your set. It should have pictographs showing how to connect these sources. Good luck and have fun.
Beerinator 10-30-06, 03:13 PM Hmmm I recently bought the 537h and now apparently theres a 237V model that looks better and has the same specs as the 537. What the heck am I missing? I would assume that the 5 series would be better then a low 2 series. But compare the 5 vs 2 and you get the same exact specs according to olevia.com

Doing a compare, it appears the differences are with the speaker placement (vertical on 237), different warrenty (not on site for 237), and remote is optional with the 237.
elgibby 10-30-06, 03:31 PM minguy - There should be coax cable connectors on the set.
On the 537, there is only one RF connector. There is no way that I know of to do a channel can for OTA and for Cable. Gotta pick one or the other; if you do a cable scan and then an OTA scan, the OTA overrides the cable.
This is annoying, but it wasn't a deal-breaker for me.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed both sites were under the same ownership shortly after posting my previous message. I ended up ordering the 537h from buydig this morning and the unit is already in a shipped status. This is my first LCD HDTV so hopefully I'll have the great experience others have mentioned on this forum.
Phanstern 10-30-06, 03:53 PM I received the 542i the other day, and am really enjoying it! (my first hdtv)
A few questions,
- I am using a HDMI cable from the 8300HD box, which automatically sets it to passthrough the stb. But how do i change from 1080i and 720p on the TV? Would 720p look better on sports or any other type program?
- I have been using the zoom on the 8300HD stb, because when i use the aspect button on the remote for the tv, it doesnt make it fill wide, they only seem to zoom the 4:3 for SD..... How do i use the stretch on the 542i to make 4:3 sd fill the screen???
- The lines/snow up top that people have been mentioning is annoying, I only get it on maybe 10 SD channels, using zoom or something gets rid of it, but does anyone know what causes this and is it possible it can be a fix coming via firmware??
Also, anyone know any settings that would help PQ wise??? I have it set on 6500k , but I havent messed around with any other settings. HD looks incredible, and SD is good aswell. I was even happy with the black level.... Anyways, if anyone knows any settings that make this TV look even better please let me know

I'm told the firmware doesn't fix the snow. This wasn't an issue with the LT37HVS, which is pretty disappointing with this new model. I'm hoping to high heaven a new firmware will permanently crop the picture so all transmissions alleviate this snow.
Olevia told me to "crop" the picture, but it doesn't crop it enough to get rid of the snow. The horizontal and vertical pic adjustment will get rid of the snow, as will the panoramic view, but it doesn't save this info when you power down the set. Another negative for the 537H.
The 9300k is a better setting for the whites compared to the 6500k setting IMHO.
At the bottom of your 8300HD remote, you should have a button that scales the picture to wide. Use that as opposed to the tv setting. It will fill the screen nicely.

Where are you guys seeing the 237? It's not on the site. Does the 237 have PIP, pic by pic, and an ATSC tuner? Does it have all the pq controls? What's the difference in cost?

I'm lost as to why they would make a 2 series model better than a 3 series. When you compare the two side by side, the 2 series has more features. What gives?
theyownus 10-31-06, 10:33 AM last night I purchased the Syntax Olevia 342i at the dallas microcenter. I originally went to purchase the 537h but after seeing the 42incher and how great the quality we decded to go for it (was cheaper after rebate as well!) being as I have a motorola HDTV DVR STB from time warner and will use this mainly with XBMC the lack of tuner was no problem. I never configured either tuner on my CRT HDTV this is replacing. well... this set is great. after fiddling with it a bit I hooked up my xbox with xbmc through component and my motorola with a DVI to HDMI cable. after fiddling with some settings to get everythign displaying correclty everythign looked great. maybe an hour of setup and I was watching HDTV through my motorola and plaing with my new to me original xbox in 720p! also checked out SDTV through my motorola (upconverted to 720p i think) it wasnt spectacular but no different from my CRT HDTV (32" sanyo) just scaled up and defects are more noticeable. SDTV is definatly watchable on this set though.
one note... the panoramic aspect is very strange. do not think I will be using that much...
anyone else have a 342i? any reason to start a 342i thread? I would like to find out more about this TV and its capabilities and also willing to answer any questions others may have.
stephenC 10-31-06, 11:47 AM Congratulations to any/all of you who own stock in Syntax! Taking on Vivitar and raising the price of each share several dollars!
I read an article about this acquistion. The writer thought that Syntax could use the sales channels of Vivitar to increase the TV sales. I wonder if Olevia will re-brand the TVs as Vivitar. We already have Polaroid TVs, why not Vivitar too.
westcoastnative 11-01-06, 01:00 AM I turned on my 537 tonight and the sound echos on every station. I can't find any setting that will change this. Has anyone experienced this? Am I going to need to get this TV serviced?
Westcoastnative: I would check and see if you have the same thing from DVD/VCR (other devices) other than cable/OTA signals does it too. Also check the sound settings in the tv, see if somehow it got changed. Hope that helps.
edit: just saw you checked the settings... oh-well, I will still leave it there anyway.
badself 11-01-06, 02:44 PM My dealer's inquiry with Olevia last Friday on the ship status of the 747i yielded a response that the 747i will ship the first week in November, so hopefully I will have tracking information by the end of next week, with any luck. For an online dealer, Bright and Sleek seems to run a decent operation. They've been courteous through my numerous contacts, and have always followed through with e-mails when one would hope they would. C-Net also paints them in a favorable light. Several other internet outfits now list the set when googled, some for a bit less than my price, but none with a solid record, and none even showing the correct MSRP on their site. For a defective unit, B & S even covers return shipping on top of free shipping, rather than deferring the customer to the manufacturer warranty, plus I'm betting they'll actually get the set.
wtr_wkr 11-01-06, 03:11 PM ...the 747i will ship the first week in November, ...
It's a race. Be the first to get delivery and POST in a NEW Syntax signature 7xx series thread.

I ordered from BeachCamera on Monday afternoon, it shipped the next day, and I received it today (1 day from NJ to NY). The item was double boxed so the Olevia box was in excellent condition. Great service! gwrace, i do not think you will be diappointed.
This is the first time I've spent so much on a luxury item and it is also my first LCD. I was nervous but everything turned out great thanks to all the great advice and information on this site.

What kind of "antenna coax cable" can you use? Will a standard indoor rabbit-years antenna work?
Does QAM and OTA refer to channels in HD or SD or both? From the impression that I got from this thread, these Olevia models can pick up free HD channels that are available in the local region. Is that right? Sorry for all the newbie questions.
All this talk about the 7 Series seems pretty exciting. Hope it's everything you're all anticipating and more.

As long as your rabbit-ears do/receive UHF (or whatever the really high frequencies are) yes that will work. Qam is for picking up digital cable- so instead of using a digital cable box you can just plug the cable directly to the tv- this only works if the channels are not encrypted, so basically it means you can pick up a handful of channels, and (generally) you can pick up your neighbors VOD choice if you happen upon it as they are watching it.
OTA would refer to both SD and HD, most people here would probably be referring to picking up HD over-the-air. HD OTA is free and yes it would be the channels available in your area...there are sites online that should give you a pretty good idea of what channels are available and if you should be able to receive them (depending on distance, etc). Also the QAM tuner should be able to pic up HD content from your cable provider as it is supposed to be unencrypted-- most people on here tend to find it is 'accidentally' encrypted by the providers so bunny ears will be your best bet, unless you want ESPN or other non-local provided HD channels.
Hope that helps!
rantanamo 11-01-06, 06:13 PM I have had the 537H for two weeks now.
I've noticed this from the cable box whether it be component or HDMI, 720p or 1080i, but not from OTA or QAM. You can use the onscreen settings to move the screen. So I've started using the cable box only for the HD channels I can't get QAM. I'm thinking its the cable box and not the tv.

To give an example, QAM, I get all locals in SD, locals digital and locals HD, all SD cable channels 0-99, all of the digital music channels, a couple of digital shopping channels, TNTHD, and about 10 channels only available in the digital tiers. If I could get ESPN, Discovery and InHD(our sparse HD lineup from TWC), I'd give up the box and use a PC EPG, or forget the EPG all-together. Hate the PQ through the box. Much, much better SD and HD through the set's tuner.

I was able to fix it by resetting my TV back to factory settings.

Turn off the box. Press the Menu button. Should give you a white screen with black writing to change the setting. Then press menu again to exit or you'll get a message screen. Be sure to press menu to exit.
[quote]- I have been using the zoom on the 8300HD stb, because when i use the aspect button on the remote for the tv, it doesnt make it fill wide, they only seem to zoom the 4:3 for SD..... How do i use the stretch on the 542i to make 4:3 sd fill the screen???
I like the side bars, but just keep pressing aspect and it will zoom to fill it. Make sure when you go to the white menu on the STB, set the aspect ratio to 16:9. The zoom modes should work with it then.
- The lines/snow up top that people have been mentioning is annoying, I only get it on maybe 10 SD channels, using zoom or something gets rid of it, but does anyone know what causes this and is it possible it can be a fix coming via firmware??
I believe its the box, not the set. You can move the screen a few lines up or down in the TVs setup.

I can't give you exact settings, but I use MCE 2005. They have a decent setup to help with brightness, contrast and color. After using the setup, the blacks are much much better(It tries to make black objects on a black suit disappear. Works well.
Phanstern 11-02-06, 03:53 PM Thanks Buckeyefan and Rantanamo for your replies...
I used the V. position to adjust the picture to get rid of the lines up top, unlike what others claimed in this thread, after turning the TV off it kept the setting :D
Rustdust 11-02-06, 05:12 PM I called Olevia about the 237v vs. the 537H, of course the cases are different but the internals are the EXACT SAME. The tech support guy kinda laughed while checking the specs and said Woo Hoo you get a universal remote with the 537 and one year in home service. I like the looks of the 237 better and with the speakers to the side, I think you would get better stereo seperation.

I bought a 537h, however seeing the 237v, I might have gone for that instead. I use a Logitech Harmony remote, so I don't need one included. Plus I have the system hooked to a home theater system, so I don't use the speakers. That leaves me with the warranty as the only difference that I care about. And depending on the price difference, I could go either way.

Well I CLAIM IT and IT DOESNT SAVE VERTICAL POSITION!!!!!!!! AND I'VE HAD THE TV FOR 2 MONTHS!!!!!
rantanamo 11-02-06, 06:32 PM That 237 does look good, but if you haven't seen the 5-series in person, don't underestimate the looks of it. I still think they are the best looking LCD's out there. Really handsome, compared to the more modern wide look of the 237.

It always saves for me for whatever reason. The problem is, the STB changes, and from channel to channel. Definitely is the STB, not the set. I've never had such problems via QAM or OTA. Even with the HTPC I've had no such problems.
I calculate that first shipments of the 747i must be about ready to go out to dealers from Syntax-Brillian...at least if they are keeping to their stated schedule to have them to market by mid November.

Hi,
For those of you that are tech savvy, could you tell me which of the following is the BETTER display? The 542i can be had for $50 less.
Panasonic TH-42PX60U 42" Plasma
Olevia 542i 42" LCD
I'm in a huge debate here which to get! The Panny has better blacks and maybe a better image, especially for moving images. The Olevia has a PC input and more versatility with the speakers. Does anyone else have something to throw in?
And if you're interested in getting the 542i at a low price from a reputable seller, send me a PM and I'll link you.
Thanks!

Shipments from the far east typically take 10 days to 2 weeks on the water, followed by several days going through customs and getting transported to the subsidiary or importer's west-coast warehouse. 1st production runs usually get a quality control check before being released for shipment to distributors and resellers.
The Olevia 747i was supposed to arrive in the States the first week of November and be in the hands of distributors/resellers by mid-November. We'll know soon if this turns out to be the case.

Not certain, the Sony's (xbr/v2500), for instance, are manufactured in Mexico.
Truthfully, I'd be willing to wait longer for a set manufactured in Japan. One thing's for sure, it's not manufactured in the USA.

Plasma vs LCD. Black levels vs glare. Motion, SD, PC,... I suggest you decide what's important to you and research that aspect. Neither of those sets do what I want.
Some basics: Plasma: black levels, ~motion, overall PQ. LCD: PC, 1080p, glare. EDTV: from far for less including DVD but not HD. For digital SD with LCD, get 7xx series. For motion and want LCD, wait for 120Hz TVs if you have the $$$. For plasma with 1080p, wait a little longer. For HD-DVD/BD, get 1080 native res.

Although Olevia TVs are not currently (and the panel will never be) manufactured in the USA, Syntax just entered a partnership with Solar Link / Pou Chen to assemble TVs here. Since they started mass production last week, it might be more than a coincidence that the 747i ships soon (whoever gets one, please check the label and let us know if it says "designed and assembled in the USA").

talaner 11-05-06, 06:43 AM There's a good in-depth review of the 542i at Audioholics - Maybe someone else can link to it, as I'm not yet allowed to - It's fairly easy to find.
It's not the most glowing review, but it's pretty darn good. The reviewer rates it "Very Good" overall, and considers it an "Excellent" value.

phipp01 11-05-06, 11:24 AM OK finally hooked up the HDMI cable from the STB to the TV. Audio is more even than before but now i have a serious red push. Picture does seem a little more crisp than thru component. Guess I'll have to play with the color settings and see if I can tweak it in better. And it does seem the white noise at the top of the screen is from the STB. But thats only on SD or HD channel showing non HD material. Tried the auto sync setting for the picture but that doesnt help either. Guess I'm stuck using the vertical postion setting every time I have the white noise oh well....
phipp01 11-05-06, 11:55 AM Ok adjusted the red push thru 6500k user setting much better......I did notice 1 thing tho maybe someone can confirm this in their set....I went to set the current date and time and it was set to December 5th 2006 and the day of the week (which is not changeable) was Sunday. Set it to todays date November 5th 2006 and the set now says the day of the week is Tuesday....huh? anyone else notice this.....
BTW my firmware version is 537-b11-060608b

Thanks. I've decided on the 542i since it has PC Input and no burn in, like you said. i'd worry that if I hooked my PC into the plasma, I could get burn in due to having the same screen up often.
Just need to figure out if the VGA in port accepts a male cable or a female one!
1st time here :)
bought my 537h through buydig upgrade link.
After unwrapping, it says MODEL: 537-B11
Everyone get the same model or someone did get a model number like 537-H?
Mine died 20 minutes (no more channel scan) after powered on.
