Buckeyefan 11-06-06, 12:12 AM What is everyones opinion of LCD diplays and sports? I've got a 37" Olevia LCD with an 8ms response time, and it's plain as day to see the pixelation during sporting events. It's especially easy to see the pixelation with certain sports such as tennis and golf. The golf swing is horrible - it's almost as if there's a strobe light on the golfer.
This is one area where i would give plasma a "one up" on LCD. I've not noticed it on my pc's 20" LCD (also Olevia). And yes, I'm sitting plenty far away from the screen. I'd say 9 feet with a 37" set.
One other complaint is that "stretched" SD cable on the Olevia 537H looks 2x as bad as regular CRT cable on a 36" Cinema Series Toshiba CRT. With 170 channels, and only 15 or so in HD (and of those, only one or two worth watching), it's almost too early for HD IMHO. C'mon Hollywood, we need more programming in HD - and wide screen to boot.
I was just thinking about getting the new 37 and when I look at the stats I am impressed but I am just a little unsure of the product for some reason. I am not sure what is holding me back. I have read mostly good things about it and then I read some things that are really bad just as the previous post about pixelation. Not that I watch alot of sports but it still a concern.
A friend has one and loves it.
I am also looking at the viewsonic and the polaroid both of which have very similar stats but both would cost me a bit more.
I bought the 937H, received it Friday and it is awesome. No problems with pixilation during sports like reported above. Exception to that is when viewing a longer distance NBC station I get some. I believe it is all signal related and not the TV. Directv's Sunday Ticket pictures were absolutely stunning.
It took a while for me to get used to the user interface, the manual on CD is not the best and if it hadnt been for this forum I do not think I would have figured out how to get the showroom-home setting changed as it comes up so quick on startup that I hit showroom by mistake.
So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed!! :)
Can someone please let me know if the VGA port on your TV accepts a female or male connector? I can't find this anywhere online...and I need to buy one today but want to make sure I get the right kind :)
Thanks!

Judging by the pictures I have see on the TV- you will need a male connector.
What is everyones opinion of LCD diplays and sports? I've got a 37" Olevia LCD with an 8ms response time, and it's plain as day to see the pixelation during sporting events. I wonder if your description is what I was noticing yesterday on ALL dlp tvs at Circuit City over the weekend. Unfortunately they weren't on sports, and they don't carry the Olevia brand, but they had Discovery HD on and were showing something with helicopters, every DLP tv had a strobe type appearance where the blades turn near the rotor. None of the LCD tvs experienced this phenomenon. So when you say strobe light over the golfer, do you mean really over the whole golfer... or is it just when the club is swinging? Is anyone seeing anything like this when watching hockey, tennis, etc? I would presume that the helicopter blade is a good indicator of their handling of high speed movement, and that definitely turned me off to the DLPs and reenforced my opinion of LCDs. I am curious about this occurring, I have read the one other post that mentions it happen on just one station, but not others. Is anyone else experiencing this? does it appear to occur on only certain models?
Circuit City was awesome btw in switching their inputs for me so I could see how the different tv's handled HD and SD connect (and blu-ray for those applicable)
I did look at the 442 at Office Depot too and the tv looked really good to me compared to the other television they had. I would presume some of this is due to the different calibrations each tv was set to, but I was ready to buy it right there....if only it was the 5 series

I'm wondering if this is an issue with the tv or an issue with compression of your HD signal by the provider...something to think on, may want to compare with another tv using the same provider in your area.
Does anyone know if it is possible to go see a 537 in a store in Southern California?
I live in Los Angeles and find it hard to believe I can't physically look at a semi-major brand of TV in the 2nd biggest city in the US????
Hard to justify plopping down that kind of $$ sight unseen, despite the reviews here.
Does anyone know if Syntax has any plans to get the 5-Series in B&M store in the near future?
Thanks!
talaner 11-06-06, 05:05 PM Does anyone know if it is possible to go see a 537 in a store in Southern California?I think they have them at 'Target' department stores. I know the Target website shows the '5' series, but I don't know if they have them on display. I can't think of the last time I went to Target. Office Depot carries some Olevia models, but I've yet to see any of the 5 series there.
phipp01 11-06-06, 05:47 PM And speaking of Target ... target.com has a web only sale on the Olevia 332H today. The low price coupled with a 10% coupon AND free shipping make the deal too good to pass up. I was going to wait for a Black Friday but I'd be surprised if I find it cheaper.
I'm coming from a Olevia 26" HVE used as my HTPC display. The 332H should be a nice upgrade.
You forgot to mention or notice it says "item arriving in 2 to 6 weeks". Great price but quite the leeway in time for them to get it then ship to you.

Yup looks like the VGA connector on my 537h the only difference is location.
I think they have them at 'Target' department stores. I know the Target website shows the '5' series, but I don't know if they have them on display. I can't think of the last time I went to Target. Office Depot carries some Olevia models, but I've yet to see any of the 5 series there.
Last I read Target only carries them online, not in their stores. Office depot does carry the 4 series, which according to everything stated there aren't many differences. I checked out out Yesterday and I thought it looked very good. The 5 series will have the speakers on the bottom instead of sides and the frame is black instead of silver also they have slightly different warrenty. Their specs appear to be exactly the same beyond that so if you just want to check out the picture capability Office Depot will do the job.
Comp USA is supposed to carry them as well, but I haven't gone into one yet to verify the currently do. I know the last time I went they did have the previous years models (I also went before this years were released) and was very please with those displays as well.
The reason behind the 4 and 5 (and presumibly 2 [which is also the same as the 4 but w/ the black frame]) series is that then the stores can have their "match or beat" someone elses prices but have a different model number so that if you find a 5 for cheaper than the 4 series they aren't the "Same" model and therefore they don't have to match that price.
Google is your friend. :D

I guessed right on my order from monoprice.com then :)

Are there any Microcenter stores there. That's the only place I've seen the current models. CompUSA around here(Dallas) always has last generation's Olevias for some reason. Have to say though, the opinions in this thread, and a look at the super handsome 542i convinced me more than anything to buy the 537.
Although Olevia TVs are not currently (and the panel will never be) manufactured in the USA, Syntax just entered a partnership with Solar Link / Pou Chen to assemble TVs here. Here's a slideshow of the new plant.

No 747i news for 5 whole days! What's the deal folks? Are you too busy watching your new sets? :o
Ra Power 11-07-06, 03:08 AM No 747i news for 5 whole days! What's the deal folks? Are you too busy watching your new sets? :o
I know!
I'm hoping for some sales between now and Christmas. Black Friday?
BTW, am I the only one who thinks this is a little cheesy:
1 The 747i comes with horizontal (bottom)-mounted speakers. With purchase of an optional conversion kit, the speakers can be repositioned to a vertical (side) configuration.
Buckeyefan 11-07-06, 07:27 AM HHGregg also carries the new 5 series model, and at a great price.
Is anyone finding that turning up the bass on the 537 produces a "wind like" sound? Can you guys check your sets to see if it's just mine, or if that's typical of these sets. The LT37HVS didn't do that, and in fact had outstanding sound compared to this set. I've got the set hooked up to my surround sound, so it's not an issue, but that noise is downright awful.
BTW, am I the only one who thinks this is a little cheesy:
Well, IMHO, nothing can compare with Sony charging $300 for pieces of plastic to change the color of a XBR2. :D

It doesn't cost anything to remove the speakers and throw them away. I'll be using my own sound system, not theirs. And the set looks much better without the speakers.
cjarrettgsu 11-07-06, 10:26 PM I emailed olevia to find out what brand makes my panel and this is what they told me.
We use several different manufacturers for our LCD TVs and visually all
are considered equal. Your particular TV has an LG panel.
They also told me how to upgrade my tv if i ever need it. That was not very helpful, so if anyone know how you are supposed to upgrade a 542i, please let me know.
Thanks for your help.
anyone have any idea on which brick & mortar stores will carry the 42" 747i?
I'll never buy online so my only choice is to buy in-store, so any word on which stores will carry the new line?
I only know of Target & CompUSA that carry Syntax LCD's & they are all the old models, nothing up to date.
dwindleflip 11-08-06, 01:30 AM Does anyone know how to get 1360x768 to look 1:1 on the 542i using the vga input??
On my 542i, the 1360x768 image appears squished and has black bars on both sides . Its way out of aspect and i cant figure out how to fix it.
1280x720 through vga looks ok, but has about an inch of black bars on each side.

Some are fantastic and some are horrible. I think its more source than anything. 1080i is generally pixelated on any HD set during fast motion. Watch a CBS NFL vs Fox NFL. The still picture of the CBS 1080i picture is awesome, but it blurs and pixelates. Fox's 720p is not quite as pretty on a 537H when its still, but its great during sports. I have the Cowboys/Redskins game recorded via Firewire from last Sunday. Incredible PQ. No pixelation, no blurry motion. Great 5.1. I compare that to the Cowboys/Panthers game from NBC 1080i. Not even close. A pixel party with pretty close-ups and stills. That Fox broadcast is pure reference material.
Anyways, back on subject, each HD type of set has its drawbacks. Just keep in mind you're reading the opinions of many videophiles on this board. They are super nitpicky. Most people won't even notice a lot of this stuff. Funny story, I was at the Dallas Microcenter picking up another HD tuner for the HTPC. This guy was totally trying to convince his elderly parents to go with a Sony 1080p set over the Olevias, Winbooks and others. He was convinced the source for the Sony was compromised somehow. The male of the couple kept saying, its the same source split into all the sets. It was. Granted the sets weren't calibrated, but the HD being shown was really good and probably the best comparison setup I've seen. The couple kept insisting on the 537H and a 32" Winbook model and said, well to "me" these look best. They were really flustering that guy, LOL.
bizmark 11-08-06, 02:46 PM Has anyone side-mounted the speakers on a 542i ??
I spoke to a CSR at Olevia and asked about the kit to do it. He put me on hold for about 10 minutes while he "checked with the warehouse." He came back and said that the PA-42SPCONVK kit was the part number to do it. I've never seen any mention of that part working on the 542i.
When I told him that part number was for last year's 42" LT-42HVi, I asked if the bezels would match the color of the 542i chassis. He hesitated a bit and said yes.
I'm just wondering if anyone has done this yet and how they look before I go ahead and order the kit.
Thanks

The 7-Series is much less widely distributed than 5,4, or 3. Emailing Syntax-Olevia would probably be the quickest way to find out who the 7-Series dealers in your area will be.

Syntax is trying to blaim ATI for the flaw in it's 532H and 527 series TV's.
"from what we can tell, this is just the way the ati chipset behaves. we compared motion tests with a sony bravia, and the results are identical. at this point, i don't think there is anything that can be done short of ati redesigning their chip, which won't be happening."
I would not recommend this company to any buyer intereted in a quality picture. I have put up with this set for far too long... lead on by people on this forum that this was a fixable problem.

I've had my 532h for about a month now, and all I can say is that its the best t.v. I've owned. I mainly use it for my xbox360 and the picture is flawless. I also use my 360 to watch movies and with this t.v. the picture is perfect. I'm very picky about picture quality and I'm very happy with this set.
There are small flaws with the software (such as not being able to skip inputs), but in my opinion the price more than makes up for it.
I just wanted to let people know that I have never had the problems that Snowmoon has had, and I would recommend this set to anyone. In fact my girlfriend just bought the 537h and she loves it!

The effect is inversely proportional to the input resolution. 480i is the most acffected and 1080i is the least affected, but it does cover the gamut.
While some people can not see the defect, it is there and it is a manufacturing defect from the firmware. The 537 is a different MB/chipset and is unaffected.

If you have been reading this forum, you know you could have waited for others to purchase, review and return. For example, the new Sharp's 62. Expected to be the top new LCD, but it has a banding problem. I know this and I've never been interested in that set.
You bought a low end model from a second tier brand without waiting for reviews. Syntax sell LG panels with assorted chip sets. You get what you pay for and what you earn. Sorry for your situation, but Syntax is providing what I want - value. 7xx with HQV may be a great TV. Note the "maybe."
Sinatrafan 11-09-06, 02:45 PM I have a question regarding the Olevia 542i model. We are thinking of purchasing this set for Christmas for the family. We'll get it sometime after the prices go down a bit, after Thanksgiving.
Olevia's website indicates that this television has a ATSC/NTSC Combo Tuner; but; if you scroll down the page, it then indicates that the Tv tuner INPUT is ATSC/NTSC/Clear QAM.
I am going to have Verizon FIOS TV installed next week. Will I have to rent an HD set-top box, OR can I simply run the cable directly into Olevia's ATSC Clear Qam Tuner to be able to recieve HD tv ?
Thanks ~
Yes, the 542i has Clear QAM. It will only allow for free viewing of HD signals from ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and maybe PBS (not sure on PBS).

This is only partially true. I actually get TNTHD, Disney Channel, all of the digital music channels, and a few other digitals. Once in a while HBO or Fox Sports Net HD will pop-up. The result will vary. I'd just get the HD box though if you're getting FIOS.
Sinatrafan 11-09-06, 03:29 PM Thanks, Kwest2,
Sooo..I can hook the FIOS cable directly into the Olevia, and receive the Alphabet network HD channels..hmmm. But..I'm wondering if I'll be able to recieve any other UN-ENCRYPTED HD channels besides the Alphabet Network HD channels.. It seems to me that I would be able to recieve EVERY Free (Unencrypted) HD Channel that was offered on the Extended Basic service that Verizon offers.
Well, I'll know for sure after we get the Olevia in a month and a half.
Thanks again ~

If you're unlucky you'll get just the major networks. You should get some other digital channels and if lucky a couple of cable HD stations.
jonkras 11-09-06, 05:59 PM Has anyone gotten their hands on a 747i? If so, can we get a review?
Buckeyefan 11-09-06, 07:52 PM Dayum', that's a good HD picture (Rutgers vs Louisville) on ESPN.
I'm still p.o.'d about the sound of the "wind noise" when turning up the bass.

I'd say you should really try to find out from other Verizon FiOS users. You may or MAY NOT be able to get any HD channels. Here in Columbus OH, one cable company does have SOME of the locals unencrypted (not FOX or ABC), while the other cable provider has NONE (with the exception of music channels). Too bad for those users....
I'd check with Verizon tech support (RIGHT...) or neighbors.
I received the 542i from Beachcamera yesterday. It was set up and running. Through my regular cable, it picked up several digital channels mostly ABC NBC stuff as well as PBS, NBC, ABC and FOX in HD. I was amazed by the HD pictures. Now here comes the question:
I dismounted the speakers from the bottom. Since I'm not planning to buy a side mount kit, can I use a pair of speakers from a mini stereo system instead? I mean plugging the wires directly into the TV just as the original speakers? The mini stereo speakers are 50 watts each. Any possible damage to the TV?
thebarn 11-10-06, 11:45 AM RE:FiOS
Correct me if I'm wrong - but doesn't FiOS require a STB for EACH television? Regardless of the type of tuner in the TV?

What matters is the minimum/maximum watts to power your speakers. I don't remember what the 542i is, but either 15 or 25 watts, so as long as that is the minimum needed then you should be able to get sound out of them.
jaybert 11-10-06, 03:48 PM can anyone tell me the difference between the Olevia 332H and the Olevia 232V other than the 232V having the built-in HD tuner? Both have 1600:1 contrast ratio, and the same viewing angle. The 232V, even though it has a built-in HD tuner, can only pick up OTA channels right? Since it doest have a QAM (?) tuner, I wouldnt be able to plug-in a composite cable and pick up digital HD channels like the higher end models right?
THanks!
EDIT: nevermind, the 232V does have QAM. Are the panels the same? Same Contrast Ratio and all, but are they the same quality?

According to the Olevia rep I spoke to yesterday. The 2 series sets are exclusive to certain retailers Circuit City being one of them. He also said the 3 series are mostly monitors with no tuners. I asked if the panels were the same and he said yes other than the color, lack of tuner, and model # the 332H and 232V TV are the same.

thank you, appreciate it. i guess i will refuse delivery on the 332H and wait in line for the 232V. Dont plan on using the tuner at any point in the near future...but its nice to have, and I like the black color more (though I prefer the speakers on the bottom instead of the sides).
EDIT: according to their website though, they use different video processors? The 232V uses the ATI, whereas the 332H uses the PixelWorks one. Is there a big difference between them? (is one better than the other?)

(Re: 7 series) I must have missed it...where did you hear about more delays?
As far as I've heard, there are no further delays...still on target to arrive at selected resellers around mid month -- at least the 47". The 42" is said to be shipping roughly 30 days after that (i.e. mid December).
Hi all,
Just received my 542i..but I'm not picking up any digital stations. I know my provider offers them, as I was able to get free HD stations when I had the 432.
Anyone have advice? Can't seem to figure it out.

Are you connecting directly to a wall jack through the QAM tuner? the "digital" channels will be through the QAM tuner, ACSC is how you pick up the HD stations (which is digital, so am not sure if that is what you mean). You should still be able to receive the HD channels, so long as your antenna can pick them up. Does the tv channel scan?
Greetings all,
I am the proud owner of the new 537H Olevia. I am trying to learn more about my latest purchase and welcome all replies. I have been reviewing previous posts in a effort to try and educate myself. I am paticularly interested in subjects pertaing to the connection and "fine tuning" my set. Those of you that have resolved issues with the 537H please chime in. Thanks, Jim/Beau

Congrats on your new set, I do have a question for you since I am planning to purchase it soon. Does the remote have a "1 touch" sleep timer or do you need to go through menus?
Thanks
fdisker 11-10-06, 11:10 PM My Olevia 332H arrived today from Target.com. It's the 32" model without a tuner. I've been tweaking all the settings for the past 4 or 5 hours and comparing it to my old LCD tv, the Syntax LT26HVE (26" widescreen, 1280x768 native res).
From a specifications standpoint the 332H is bigger and has a faster response time and a better contrast ratio. I have the panels sitting side by side on my desk both being driven by my HTPC ... the 332H via HDMI and the 26HVE via VGA. I have several hours of standard def and high def TV recorded which make for an easy side by side comparison. After viewing most of the recorded material on both sets this evening I can say that both sets produce an image that's about the same. In fact, I'm struggling to find any differences in picture quality between the two. Both produce a wonderful hi def image and I have no complaints about the 332H from a picture quality perspective. I see no great improvement in black level ... it's acceptable but not as good as plasma.
I really don't have much else to say about the TV at this point. I'm quite happy with the picture quality but the "floating" menu system will take some getting used to. I was easily able to achieve 1:1 pixel mapping by setting my desktop resolution to 1360x768 and then enabling the 1:1 mode on the TV. I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable from the HTPC.
I'm happy to answer any questions about the set if you have any.
Re: 537H
I read through the manual and re-read most of this thread but I have two questions.
First, to achieve an undistorted picture with no stretching or cropping, is "Full Screen" the correct mode for anamorphic material and "Aspect" for 4:3 non-anamorphic? It seems like it is to my untrained eyes, but not 100% sure.
Second, perhaps I'm misunderstanding something important about LCD TVs in general, but I thought I could adjust the resolution setting of the TV regardless of the source. For example, if I'm feeding a 480p source into the TV, does it only display it as 480p? Or can I choose to display it as 720p or 1080i? (It would be interesting to compare.) Or is the TV already "upconverting" the source and I just can't figure out how to tell?
minguy, the tv has to show something in every pixel, so it will scale a source to fit the screen. it is scaling the 480 input.
tfinger 11-11-06, 06:20 AM After many hours of research on many models, mainly on AVS Forum, this morning I ordered an Olevia 537H costing in the mid-8's all total.
I too, am interested in what fine tuning or calibration is really needed to have a good picture on this set.
Thanks to all you who have helped me out with the vast amount of info.
IeraseU 11-11-06, 11:32 AM I ordered the 542H today mainly for use with PS3/Blu-ray and HTPC (Sage). My PC is located about 15' away. I will use the HDMI input for PS3......I was wondering if 15' is going to be 'ok' for VGA cable lenght or is that too long? Would you recomend component rather then VGA for some reason?

I am connecting directly to a wall jack and plugging it into the Ant port on the TV. The channel scan works for "Air" but not "cable". However, I only pick up analog stations when I should pick up Digital. I bought an R6 cable and I'm wondering if I should hvae stuck with an R59, if that matters. Otherwise I hvae no idea why it's not detecting digital stations. Plus, I can't add digital (like 5.1) since there's not "." button on the remote! Any suggestions? Thanks!
Edit - PRoblem solved. Thanks
Derek_HTPC 11-11-06, 05:01 PM What matters is the minimum/maximum watts to power your speakers. I don't remember what the 542i is, but either 15 or 25 watts, so as long as that is the minimum needed then you should be able to get sound out of them.
You should also make sure the impedance is correct. Typical speaker impedance is 8 ohms, but I don't know what the Olevia speakers are. If your speakers are significantly lower impedance than what the amplifier was designed for, it may have problems driving them without overload. Impedance is dynamic, but you can get a reasonable approximation for most speakers by measuring the static resistance with an ohm-meter.

Man, I was really hoping to lay my hands on one before Christmas. I'm hosting Christmas at my house this year. :p
I've noticed that etailers have really yanked the price up on the 747 lately!
stockwiz 11-11-06, 05:09 PM I just jumped on the 537h model for a good price.... plan on returning my 32 inch westinghouse unopened to best buy tomorrow. Everything I have read on every forum I've been on has positive things to say about this model, not to mention the fact that the repair rate seems to be quite a bit lower then the westinghouse models too. Generally you at least get some complaining about products on messageboards, that that is surprisingly absent with the syntax olivia brand... and for the price... glad I made the jump to the 37 inch model.
Also their stock... in case you can't tell by my username, I'm a casual investor in the markets... with a price to sales ratio of just over 1 and a forward PE ratio based on last quarter's earnings of about 30ish the stock isn't that bad of a buy here. I'll watch it to see if it comes down after it's recent runup. Nice cup and handle forming. Actual earnings are better too because of charges. Maybe I can pay for the set by purchasing stock.
GamerGirl 11-11-06, 05:13 PM Anyone have any opinions on the 232V? I'm thinking of getting it soon but don't see any reviews online for that model. I've heard good and bad things about these Olevias so I'd appreciate any advice/suggestions you Syntax fans can give :)
I'd mostly be using it for HD viewing over QAM, watching DVDs and gaming, though that last part won't happen as much till I get a 360.
The other model I was considering is the Westinghouse W3213. Not interested in others at the moment for reasons I won't go into here.
stockwiz 11-11-06, 05:17 PM gamergirl... the 232v has very similar specs to the 532v. I think it uses the LG panels like the others. I'm not sure if it has the same problems with 480p/i content that some have had with the 432 and 532 models though. It's HD-performance will be great though, and if you are buying it on black friday, the price will be right!
After the hours of research comparing westinghouse vs. olevia, my bias has shifted towards olevia and I'll be returning my westinghouse. Of course I haven't actually owned either yet so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm going by what I've read, and I've done countless hours of research. I can find very few complaints about olevia. I find quite a few more about westinghouse, although the picture on the set is quite good at the best buy I've been too.
So I saw a 542i at MicroCenter in Santa Clara. Good looking set.
The salesman mentioned that they would be selling them for very cheap the day after Thanksgiving. I have no intention of camping out to save a few hundred bucks but it will be interesting to see how these (and all LCDS, for that matter) will be priced for the big holiday shopping season.
BoulderGeek 11-11-06, 09:42 PM I love my LT42HVi, but I really thing a trade-in policy would b enie.
I do end up watching a lot of SD video, and it would be great to have the new scaler.
Wish I had waited, now.
The LG panel on the old 42 is great, though, and it is fantastic with 1080i input.
Wonder what the resale market is on the LT42HVi?
Buckeyefan 11-12-06, 02:31 AM After many hours of research on many models, mainly on AVS Forum, this morning I ordered an Olevia 537H costing in the mid-8's all total.

Thanks to all you who have helped me out with the vast amount of info.
I find the color is sharper and the whites better using the native resolution compared to the 6500k which comes factory preset. The 6500k is a bit too "warm" with emphasis on browns and reds. I also found bumping up the contrast on HD feeds as well as the sharpness really gives you an amazing picture.
The OSU/Northwestern game, as well as the Texas/KState game was breathtaking on the 537H. I can't believe my eyes on this set when watching sports. Heck, cartoons in SD almost appear HD. The color and brightness is outstanding.
My biggest gripe is the fact you can't watch pic by pic with a cable feed/OTA feed. This set doesn't have dual tuners like the previous LT37HVS set. Also, don't turn up the bass past half way, or you'll get a "wind like" distortion sound. It could be just my set, but the speakers on this thing aren't anything to write home about.
I did hook up a 113" rooftop antenna, and get all the major stations in HD, as well as several SD VHF channels. The HD stations come in perfect. It's just a bummer that some stations broadcast in 4:3 and the set has no widescreen scaler in OTA HD mode. A small price to pay for a 37" unit in the 800 range.
Sorry about the delay (too busy playing with my new toys). Yes there is a "sleep" button on the remote. I'll look a the setup and see how it operates. Appears to be a one button affair.
This set is amazing. I watch programs I would have never watched had they not been in HD. Found myself watching insects on Discovery and was totally captivated!
Have new DVD recorder also (w/HDMI hookups), it has up-conversion and seems to really make recorded programs better.
tfinger 11-12-06, 11:16 AM Thanks for the tips Buckeyfan. I cannot wait to try it out.
tmackie 11-12-06, 12:05 PM My 537H just came in last week. It has a one touch Sleep Timer on the remote. So far it's a great set - the 6500K pre-set calibration is absolutely stunning. The SD looks better than my old Sony Trinitron and the HD is breathtaking!
how are the blacks and darker sceens on the 537h?
Buckeyefan 11-12-06, 06:11 PM how are the blacks and darker sceens on the 537h?
They're definitely black on my set, and it's a well lit room.
Thanks for the sleep timer info, now tossed up between the 537 and the 542, hmmmm
hdnovice12 11-13-06, 03:34 PM I read that other people also have this on 537H. Using Zoom1 gets rid of the problem. Zoom1 does not really affect the picture size in HD, but it seems to remove the white noise line from the top of the HD when SD content is displayed. The disadvantage is that when you switch back to an SD channel, you have to change the aspect (circling through is quite dissapointing).
hdnovice12 11-13-06, 03:46 PM One thing I notived on the screen of my set is that there is a faint 2-inch wide vertical bar. As if the LCD crystals in that bar behaved differently from the rest of the screen. It is not noticable when the colors are bright or dark. However, in the the middle, such as light blue sky or faded out green grass (such as soccer games) it is visible. It is there regardless of the source or the type of connection. First I thought it could be some electrical interference, but I could not pinpoint anything. It is as the screen is not homogenous. Any opinion on that? Olevia offered to exchange my set for a new or a "like new". Anybody got this type of exchange? I am worried about the term "like new".

I previously had no issues with the line on a HD picture, however I was just viewing QAM channels in HD. This weekend I got a HD STB, connected via HDMI, and it does get the white noise line.

Turn off "Big picture" ( or what every they called it ) support and it should go away. You are seeing closed captioning data poorly encoded onto the HD feed by the local stations.

Thanks stockwiz :) Appreciate the reply and it helps lean me more in the direction of the Olevia... Well, I was already leaning that way so this pretty much tilts me all the way over to the point I'll be falling on top of it! lol
Any other owners have comments or opinion on the 232V or comparable sets? Will I notice any motion blur or problems with videogames or have the LCDs nowadays pretty much gotten rid of that problem?

vhnguyen1 11-13-06, 09:42 PM With Black Friday sales coming up and a number of deals out there, I wanted to compare the specs between the 2, 3, 4 and 5 series based on the Olevia site. Here are the basic differences/similarities. I used the 32" series as a benchmark.
The basic panel appears to be exactly the same.
232V and 432V have speakers mounted on the side, the 332H and 532H have bottom-mounted speakers.
232V and 432V are exactly the same except for color difference (black for 2 and silver for 4). In some other post I read that the 2 series was slotted for a particular retailer, I don't know if this is true or not.
332H appears to be the stepchild of the line: no tuner, no audio output, PixelWorks DNX video processor vs. ATI Xilleon for the others (I cannot attest to the difference in quality but I'm guessing the ATI is better?).
The 532H has one leg up on the others re: warranty, with one-year on-site coverage vs. one-year exchange.
The last advantage for the 532H is a universal remote.
BTW, I am the happy owner of a 537H. Never had a single problem. I posted my first impressions earlier some 20 screens ago, they still hold true.
kaishaku 11-13-06, 10:30 PM I should have been more specific... someone *FROM THE COMPANY* who frequents this forum.
Who won't be frequenting it anymore, or as openly?
aaranddeeman 11-13-06, 10:55 PM I liked the Olevia 237V compared to 537H due to its side speakers.
Spec. wise both are similar except for the remote and warranty.
Does anyone have any opinion on pros and cons of getting 237V vs 537H?
kaishaku 11-13-06, 11:46 PM I am going to look at the 237v and 437v in person and decide
whether or not to get them over the 537h just for the looks.
So far it really does seem to me the 237/437 look better.
I am leaning toward the 237 (black). The 437 is silver and a
slightly different shape on the bottom when viewed from the
side. See newegg for great pics (as usual).
phipp01 11-14-06, 05:11 AM Who won't be frequenting it anymore, or as openly?
I believe it was BroChaos and I haven't seen a post from him in months. So who is to say that he still frequents this forum? And he was in sales IIRC not an engineer.
kaishaku 11-14-06, 10:23 AM Just got back from Office Depot, where I picked up the 437v.
HD looks great, 1:1 display shows this is a good looking LCD.
Anything stretched, to my eyes, is horrible, but I deal with
image resampling for a living. I'll be watching my TV on the
24" CRT upstairs and let the family enjoy their shiny LCD.
I never saw anything better than the Olevia 2/4/537's in stores,
so I can't fault it. The panel has little to do with quality upscaling.
I guess I'll try to get a device or two that outputs HD and wait
agonizingly for more HD signals and less compression in signals.

I'm not sure if that was directed at me, and no offense to you, but this entire thread is for discussing *Syntax Olevia TVs*... Plus, I'm not a "noob" and have been visiting AVS as long as you have, so there's no need to be condescending. A lot of us use the search function and can't find answers to our questions, you know, so don't assume we haven't tried it already.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks,
Office Depot doesn't carry the 2 or 5 series- well for sure not the 5. So I would presume he got the 4xx because that is what they offer.
Here in Portland I can tell you with 100% certainty that they, Office Depot, only carry the 4xx series. I have heard rumor that Circuit City will carry the 2 series.
Other than speaker placement/warranty/universal remote- the differences in model numbers is more for competitive pricing in favor of the retailers.
I will also confirm that: H = Horizontal; V = Vertical; i = Interchangable (comes with the speakers connected horizontal and can be removed. To be vertical with purchase of separate hardware)
Buckeyefan 11-15-06, 09:16 PM I am following up on my old question if anyone had distorted bass issues when turning up the bass on the Olevia sets past 50%. I didn't get any replies, including the 537H thread.
So, I returned the original 537H set to HHGregg this evening, and got a brand new one. I only had a few days left to exchange it. I plugged it in, and this one has a similar problem. You just can't turn up the bass past 50% without heavy distortion it appears in the 537H model. They are most likely all bugged with this problem.
So any of you looking to rely on the audio from the built in speakers - don't expect too much from them, especially the bass. Buy yourself at minimum an HTIB setup, or a small subwoofer. This unit has a subwoofer output which will account for the lack of bass in the sets treble/bass setup. You can safely turn up the treble without distortion.
steelyken 11-15-06, 09:56 PM The only thing "wrong" with the 537H speakers is they are very small and cheap.
I looked closely at my set and the openings in the grill suggests to me there are twin 2"x 3" full-range drivers on each side. That told me all I really needed to know, but just to humor you ;) I turned off my HT system, turned those built-in bad boys on and cranked up the bass. What I heard was just as you described and very similar to ordinary computer speakers. They are incapable of playing frequencies anywhere close to the mid bass range.
The speakers are nothing more than ok. With this set you are buying the picture first and audio a distant second.
Buy.com is having a one day sale on the 332H if you are looking.

An authorized 7-Series reseller with whom I spoke said that QC on the first batch of incoming sets revealed a minor Gray Scale problem. It is correctable with a firmware modification, but supposedly it's going to take a week or two to implement. I'm disappointed about the delay, but I'm also glad they have the integrity and good sense not to release a product before it is performing up to full potential.
ahwig60 11-16-06, 07:07 PM thank you pete for that information, as iam waiting for the 7 series, what reseller was that ?
Ra Power 11-16-06, 11:47 PM Update on the 7 Series from Syntax via email:
Hi, ****:
Thank you for your interest in our Olevia LCD TV. FYI, our 747i has just been released but we only have very limited quantity at this moment. All the units we have are used for the media review first. We will keep you updated on the schedule of 747i and we estimate that we can have one unit reserve for you in the first half of Dec.
Should you have any question, please feel free to let us know. Thanks.
stephenC 11-17-06, 09:48 AM This makes perfect marketing sense. Release the first units to the reviewers (CNET, Swanni, etc.) and let them write up the new 7 series with the HQV processing. What will be interesting to me is how will the market react to a third-tier manufacturer releasing what will be hyped as a top-tier product. The HQV chip is top level and so far only Olevia is using it in the 7 series. Well, I guess if the 747i is only coming out for GA (general availability) in December, the 742i won't be available until January. But, then I can wait and still enjoy my 37HVS for now.
There's been no announcement about any delays on the 742i, so I'm assuming it will still be shipping in December on the heels of the 747i.
I've searched this thread and see that some have done the firmware upgrade on their 537H.
What cable did you use?
Flash drive has a USB A male.
Looks like the TV has a USB B female?
Need an A female to B male cable?
Most cables seem to be A male to B male.
QVS has a Type A Female to B Male adapter, but I think it would make it tough to get the flash drive plugged in behind the TV.
Guess I could use some cables and adapters.
I assume the TV provides power to the flash drive?
If anyone knows where I can buy a Type A Female to B Male cable, please advise.
Thanks for all the good advice on this TV. So far, I agree with all the pros and cons that have been mentioned. My thumb gets tired from cycling through aspect modes and sources, but the blue LED makes a great night light :-)

Remember the VW Phaeton? Probably not. That was VW's attempt to sell a $70,000- car and go upscale. It was a fine car. It was basically an Audi A8 with a VW badge. But it's hsitory now, because no one wanted to pay that much for a VW no matter how good it was. I think the 7 series is headed for Phaeton heaven, unless they are planning steep discounts. The big name tv's are plunging in price, I think they will have a tough time, even if the product is good.
kaishaku 11-18-06, 10:18 AM Kaishaku,
Did you get a chance to look at 237V?
Could you share with us why you chose 437 over the other two (237 and 537)?
Thanks,
I saw the 437 and 537 in person. I really didn't like the look of the 537, so
it was always going to be between the black 237 and silver 437 for me.
The 437 is available at Office Depot, so I got one knowing I could return it.
The black 237 probably looks better, but ordering online would be annoying.
kaishaku 11-18-06, 10:44 AM Just got back from Office Depot, where I picked up the 437v.
I wanted to give an update for discerning gamers considering any LCD.
I have played competitive FPS on PC with CRT for about 10 years.
When I started I started on a T1. I never used a modem for gaming.
I know CRT lets me play better, but I have hopes an S-IPS panel will
allow me to get rid of my CRT for competitive multiplayer PC gaming.
Translating this to the TV, I play Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II.
I play expert mode and beat most of the GH2 songs on expert the
very first time I played them, with some 4 stars and a 5 star.
With respect to our new Olevia 437v, I kept telling my girlfriend
"guitar hero will be the real test". So, a day or two after we
bought it I had time to give it the GH2 test. It failed miserably.
Calibrating the LCD lag with GH2 gave numbers above 80ms. It
seemed slightly better in 1:1 pixel mode, but calibrated similarly.
( I would have thought the lag was mostly in upscaling )
That said, I could not play GH as I used to, not even close.
The response time destroyed guitar hero play, with or without
calibrating a correction offset in GH2.
Some people deal with display lag, but I do not. So, I returned
my Olevia, got a new Sony CRT, and I'm back to my old self.
I still consider the Olevia 2/4/537 the best display you can get for
HD activities. Additionally, the SD is better than almost everything.
( I tested with movies and stills transferred to my digital camera. )
Sinatrafan 11-18-06, 01:55 PM I understand that Circiut City is selling the Olevia 2 series; but when I visited the Circuit City store in North Dallas, I found that they will NOT be carrying the 237 model. Dodes anyone know if the 237 Olevia will be sold in any other brick and mortar store? If so, which store will be selling these sets ?
I understand that the 237 might be available for sale online; but I don't want the problems that are often associated with purchaseing from online stores.
Thanks ~
BroChaos 11-18-06, 02:51 PM i just want to make it clear that a fix was never promised or even led on as a possibility. thats exactly what i didn't want to do. i always stated i could not give an honest answer, because of the fact that i really didn't know. i'm as suprised as the rest of you that a fix hasn't been made available.
the 747 has arrived in limited quantities. the 742 will be behind it. once this is finished, we will try our best to remedy any issues with the current models.
also, it would be easier if you post all general questions here, as i don't have the time to answer all PMs sent. there are a lot of knowledgeable people that can answer your question faster.
I ordered the 52i Last Sunday with a Peerless Mount. What I thought was odd was that the Price was like $300 less then Newegg (which I consider the Benchmark for all Tech related Purchase) and the Mount was $40 less.. Well.. The Mount Arrived in 4 Days.. but the TV still hasn't shipped to my knowledge and I am seeing less and less 52i's on the Open market... What's going on with the Stock of these TVs? I call the company I bought it off of (TheNerds) and they said on Thurday the Olevias are on the Truck as we speak and I shound be getting something in a couple of days... but no Shipping Notice as of Today... Bummer as I thought the Ohio State Game would have made a nice Intro to the TV!!!..

badself 11-18-06, 10:18 PM BroChaos,
Thanks for taking the time to post some concrete information on these elusive 747i's. I pre-ordered from Bright and Sleek over two months ago. I'm anxiously awaiting for my set to ship. Hopefully, that's around the corner.
Any truth to the greyscale/firmware issue Pete spoke of in earlier post, and if so, how is Olevia handling the problem?
Do you feel this set has tapped the brute horsepower the Realta is capable of?
Man, these are exciting times!
If FIOS becomes available in my service area anytime soon, I'd love to see the 747i put that setup through its paces.
In the interim, my Channel Master antenna/amplifier will be providing hopefully adequate, even stellar, OTA HD.

IMO the folks here don't give a damn about using an LCD for 'competitive multiplayer PC gaming' - they just want a good HDTV.
If you want a fast response monitor for 'competitive' gaming, stick with CRT (duh). But this is an HDTV forum, so you're barking up the wrong tree.
Slowbiscuit I don't see the benefit of criticizing someone for offering information, you may not care but you clearly don't know whether others do. Also, Office Depot advertises a doorbuster on the 227v tomorrow, but their ad and online show it silver. Went there but the clerk couldn't even find it and didn't care, they did have the 432v on display, it looked bad, a menu from Shrek DVD looking both fuzzy and blurry. Is it safe to assume the set was poorly calibrated and they're not sending the monday morning sets to Office Depot? And surely the ad must be wrong and they're selling the 427v right? It looks like a great chance to pick up a 27" Olevia but I don't think I can abide the silver.

427, 432, 527, and 523 ( and maybe the 232, 227 ) are all irreperably flawed with a 480i/p bug that Syntax will not be fixing. Search the forum for my thread on the 532h.

I have to agree with Quoit- While I am very interested in these tv's for HD, I also want to know I can enjoy it with other devices too. We currenly live in a time where many people have any thing from DVD, VCR, Blue-Ray, HD-dvd, Personal camera(s), PS3, Xbox 360, PCs and a myriod of other devices including after tonight the Wii!
With all these options people are going to want to know they can enjoy more than one feature (ie HD) on their television. I am interested in getting the Wii and would like any tv that is now costing at what is considered a "standard" prices that are many times the price of standard HD.
I agree that there doesn't need to bee any personal attacks on here, and the info is great for all those interested in the diferent uses.
That being said, how are most people with gaming consules (including pc) enjoying it on these sets? I am very seriously considering the 542i, but I think game play ability will be a determining purchase factor. Now, I will not be playing on a CRT no matter what, so I don't need that comparison- just to other modern technologies. Lcos, LCD, Plasma, DLP, LCD RP, etc.
elgibby 11-19-06, 03:10 AM Has anyone run any video from a laptop/desktop to the 537?
I've been playing with the Pinnacle HD Stick USB tuner on a Dell laptop, and it's pretty cool. I can output video via VGA or S-video, and I'm trying to understand what Olevia means by VGA-component.
Monoprice has a VGA to component cable, but there's a warning that it might not carry HD signals.
Also I don't quite understand what the VGA-component input is if not via such a cable. Has anyone used this input/cable?
If VGA is analog, would I be better off using S-vid anyway?
thx
BroChaos 11-19-06, 03:10 AM that is something that i have not heard. all greyscale calibration should have been addressed before approval for shipping, unless his sets are early demos. but there is nothing wrong with the final sets in terms of greyscale, at least not that i can see.

Thanks. I'm glad to hear the issue is just an unsubstantiated claim at this time.
My second choice of 1080p LCD would have been the Sony KDL46-v2500, and a significant number of them (if not all) are flawed with backlight leakage showing up as uneven cloudiness against a screen that is on and not receiving video input. Some are even reporting the issue with dark scenes and low ambient room lighting. Yet, the same issue is not reported in the Samsung 95/96's manufactured with an identical glass. My point, even Sony, arguably the leading tier one manufacturer, can (and historically, sometimes has) dropped the ball big-time on a set where so much hangs.
On another note, folks need to respect your right to post here (let alone the value it provides some of us). If they have a known issue with an Olevia set, then they need to set their sights on squeezing Olevia (both legally and in the marketplace) instead of channeling their understandable frustrartion on somebody who bears no responsibility for the problem.
Also, the way a minority of members have been attacking eachother on several threads of this forum is distasteful (if not threatening), even to somebody as unrefined and delightfully tacky as myself. I suspect some of these folks wouldn't have the nerve to do the same thing face-to-face, yet are more than willing to do it under the cover of anonymity. In my book, that's called cowardice. So now, go ahead and attack me for my belief. See if I give a crap, let alone the dignification of a response.
12bob21 11-19-06, 10:41 AM Has anyone come up with the optimum settings on the 537H for viewing standard TV singnals. In a side by side comparison with my old CRT its like night and day. The CRT is sharp and clear and the LCD is very soft almost blurry (same signal split to both TV's). I know this is one of the downsides of LCD's but I bought this model on everyones opinion that Olevia was one of the better TV's for STD def. I can't imagine what the bad one's look like. Also, anyone notice at times when the there is a lot of white in the background the images get washed out a little.
snowmoon 11-19-06, 01:05 PM 12bob21... first off the washed out comment... make sure your tv's brightness and contrast as set appropriately. There are plenty of sites that describe how to set them correctly, so I won't go over that here.
You also have to remember to compare apples to apples, depending on the size of the CRT it's image might be smaller and therefore look sharper by default. Think about this... HDTV's are about as good a TV display as you can get... analog sdtv is the bottom of the barrel.... it will show every wart and flaw in the source.
And you want to see worse... just look at the Syntax 532h!

Google "black friday 2006 microcenter" Over $1,200 OFF of retail for the 42 inch set!
Do it quick!!!! Get in line early before they open, be patient as they are issuing vouchers so no need to fight for salesmen and shopping carts as all sets will be released at will call. This is much better than last year where fights broke out at the front of the line for the $200 laptops giveaways.

khamkhao 11-19-06, 04:51 PM Picked up the 537 for $xxx and finished setting it up today. Very happy with the Olevia so far. I have comcast and only receive regular cable without a box and when I hooked up the cable into the 537 it picked up all the channels and some hdtv ones too!! Highly recommend it if you can pick one up for cheaper on BF.

phipp01 11-19-06, 07:34 PM OK - what's the difference in features (not price) between the 337H, the 537H, and the LT37HVS?
337h is a monitor not a TV so no tuners
537h has tuners and QAM and vast improvements over LAST years model the lt37hvs
537h has the mtk chipset
337h has the pixelworks chipset
plus 1 more component input on the 537h vs. the 337h
no remote with the 337h either (not a deal breaker in my book)
Warranty is different the 537 h is 1 year in home vs the 337h 1 year exchange parts and labor
BTW I found all this out by going to Olevias website and comparing model specifications
Amazing what one can do with a little bit of EFFORT

duhfactor 11-20-06, 02:33 AM What the difference in features 237v and 537h
Hi, I'm new here so I thought I'd just jump in and I'd add my 2 cents.
As Buckeyefan stated - except I believe it does come with a remote, its just not a universal remote. Also, according to the specifications, the 237v and 437v do not have bar timers but the 537h does.
Also from what I have gathered it appears that the 237v and 437v are identical except for their color. They also appear to have the same internals as the 537h.
The question I'm interested in is - Are the bar timers important (what are their purpose?) and if so, I wonder if you could use the 537h software upgrade on the 237/437v and add the bar timers?
Cheers
Ra Power 11-20-06, 03:12 AM Apparently, the word is out on the 7 Series. The prices have shot up and stayed up. Looks like I might have to settle for the 742i. I'm not waiting several more months, four years is long enough. :-D
moogoo122 11-20-06, 05:13 AM anyone know which processor in the olevias are better? the pixelworks dnx for the 337 or the mtk mddi from the 542? size is not an issue as i already have a 42" plasma. any inputs greatly appreciated
badself 11-20-06, 10:22 AM Is anyone aware of a brick-and-mortar dealer in the Maryland, DC, Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania corridor that currently claims access to the 747i. My internet dealer out of Florida is currently more vague now than they were pre-release as to an availability date. They now claim first week in December, and even that could change.
Maybe I'm getting overly impatient, but my gut instinct is that "Bright and Sleek" may not be accessing this set any time soon, if at all.
In the months before release of the Samsung LNS-4x96d, quite a few internet dealers solicited pre-orders for those sets, and nearly none of those dealers actually sold the set when it became available. I'm hoping this is not a similar scenario.
For the forum member who was promised a set directly from Olevia in mid-December (if Olevia even sells to end-users directly), be prepared to pay full MSRP for your set, a price point at which I will bail out decisively in favor of the Pioneer 1080p plasma.
The Sony (and now the Samsung) 46 inch 1080p sets have a known issue with backlight leakage, and are therefore no longer an option for me.
Maybe I will simply drive to Microcenter in Virginia this Friday and grab a 542i for eight bills after all incentives, and revisit the 1080p LCD market some time next year once the smoke clears. Not sure it's worth waiting in line outside the store beginning at 3 am, even for a deal that good.
snowmoon 11-20-06, 10:35 AM My question I would have... the 7XX seties is listed as having the ATI chipset ( pdf on page 3 of this thread ). Will it also be affected by the problems that plague the 480i/p sources on the other models with the ATI chipset?
stephenC 11-20-06, 10:42 AM snowmoon - The 7xx series set have the Realta HQV processing chip. That's their big claim to fame. If they have the ATI chipset faults, then something is wrong.

This response is severely misdirected. I never said I was going to use my
TV for competitive multiplayer PC gaming. I merely noted my experience
with response time in other areas, then translated that to console gaming,
which a few people in this thread have asked about. I read every post
waiting for a reply to these people, but there were none... until mine.
kaishaku 11-20-06, 01:17 PM Slowbiscuit I don't see the benefit of criticizing someone for offering information, you may not care but you clearly don't know whether others do. Is it a half second visible lag or something only a competitive gamer would see, if you put yourself in that mindset?
My Olevia LCD made it impossible to play Guitar Hero normally.
The LCD calibration in Guitar Hero 2 came to 80-100ms of lag.
However, I must admit it felt much worse than gaining 80-100ms
of lag in a FPS online. Perhaps this is because my Guitar Hero
play is even more sensitive to lag than FPS play. (surprising)
If you play an FPS online, you may already know what adding
100ms to your ping feels like. If you can accept that, then
I imagine an Olevia like my 437v would not be a problem.
If you play Guitar Hero, you can feel similar LCD lag by
trying one of the display/kiosk units for Guitar Hero II.
The small LCD at my Best Buy's GH2 kiosk seems to have
less lag than my Olevia, and I still consider it horrible.
If you care about this sort of thing and really want an LCD
for gaming, you should look into well-reviewed PC monitors.
The S-IPS panel was one reason I selected the Olevia I did.
This is supposed to be a great new panel technology as you
should find with some research.
I do not believe the panel is responsible for the Olevia lag.
Upscaling could be a problem, but my experiments with 1:1 pixel
mode indicate the lag comes from other components in the system.
This may simply be something overlooked in selecting TV parts,
at least compared to most game-friendly PC monitors.
In the end, I am going to use my CRT for a while longer, and hope
new technologies allow me to buy a slim display again. If I wanted
something bigger for movies/hd, I would consider a projector.
kaishaku 11-20-06, 01:24 PM I said this before, but want to say it again to avoid unwanted attention.
The Olevia LCD I had was great. The SD was great, and 1:1 pixel mode
showed it has the per-pixel quality I expected, let alone a 1:1 pixel mode!
nyprimus4 11-20-06, 02:44 PM I ordered the 332H from buy.com for $524 and it's on backorder. Microcenter is having a BF deal on the 532H - $369 after $150 rebate. Do you think I should cancel the 332H order and go for the 532H - ATI vs. Pixelworks?
Thx
I'm going for the 532h. I was originally plannig on spending $500 on a BF TV this holiday but this extra $100+ will allow me to get a cable box that also has free HD channels for $15 a month. and the cable box and the 532h both support HDMI. 1080i TV will be awesome hopefully.
Xcalibur_255 11-20-06, 02:47 PM anyone know which processor in the olevias are better? the pixelworks dnx for the 337 or the mtk mddi from the 542? size is not an issue as i already have a 42" plasma. any inputs greatly appreciated
The MTK chipset is preferable. I have always been greatly underwhelmed by the Pixelworks PW series chips.

I just bought a 332H on Friday and I love the picture. The only problem I have is that, over 50% of the time I turn it on, I get sound only (no picture, no Olevia start-up screen). When I power it off and on again, everything is fine, but it's a little frustrating to have to do this every time. I've contacted tech support and they are telling me to reset by unplugging for at least 1 minute, which I had done already, so I'm waiting for their next suggestion. I saw one other review on amazon of someone who had this same problem, but no resolution or anything was listed. Is there something in the menus I should try changing? Any other ideas? Thanks!
cwbywill 11-20-06, 04:15 PM hi everyone im really new here but thought i would let you know that the 537h is on sale at target for 799.00 that is the lowest price i have seen. remember to use the 10% off code and you will get it for 720.00 plus shipping and tax not so bad i just purchased it. oh and dont forget the extended service plan is only 79.00 for 3 years hope this helps some who was looking for this kind of a deal
snowmoon 11-20-06, 05:00 PM Please people... no price talk! You want to bring down the wrath of the moderators?
There are NO real cons at that price point.... :) :)
You got the 1 yr. in home servicing and digital tuner/hdmi inputs....
Heck, you could sell those babys on eBay for a nifty profit! :D :D
No cons unless you think it's a con to get up hours before sunrise and stand in a cold line for several more hours to see if you make the cut. Trust me, they're losing big money on each set, so they're only going to have a token quantity at each location...just enough to be square with the the local attorney general.

I hated the 332H, i strongly suggest you return it and get a brand name TV. I am not sure if 532 is going to be better, and i am not willing to try anything with Syntax Olevia name anymore.
phipp01 11-20-06, 06:31 PM My question I would have... the 7XX seties is listed as having the ATI chipset ( pdf on page 3 of this thread ). Will it also be affected by the problems that plague the 480i/p sources on the other models with the ATI chipset?
Snowmoon is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!! AFAIK Olevia has always claimed the Realta HQV is the chipset for the 7 series. The PDF from page 3 is 4 months old. Olevia's website wasnt even UPDATED 4 months ago. It still had all the 2005 models back then. I know I've researched Olevia TV's for 1 year now before I jumped into the HDTV arena. Snowmoon please if your going to attempt to answer questions please try to at least give the correct answers. Why would a second tier manufacturer who is trying to be first tier put an inferior chipset in thier 7 series than their 5 series has????? (ATI vs. MTK) Please stop trying to spread false info regarding everything Olevia as you bought a 532h and have problems with it. Just your qoute shows you KNOW NOTHING about any other Olevia product than the 532h. You need to troll just in the thread you started regarding the ATI chipset and the 532h.
phipp01 11-20-06, 06:34 PM Please people if you need any techinal info regarding specs please refer to Olevias website. Much more correct info there ;)

I didn't realize that calling a company out for defective products was trolling.
The question about the 7xx series was valid, based on their own documentation that shows BOTH the HQV and ATI are used in the 7xx series. With many people looking to buy these units "sight-unseen" it was a reasonable question to pose. Obviously you believe I am wrong without even looking at what I was referring to.
Of course as always "the proof is in the pudding" and all questions will be answered once the 7xx is actually available to the general public.
fdisker 11-20-06, 06:50 PM I hated the 332H, i strongly suggest you return it and get a brand name TV.
I absolutely love mine. It's connected to my HTPC via HDMI and it looks fantastic. I watched a ton of football this weekend in HD (GO BUCKS!!) and I couldn't be more pleased with the picture. Vivid colors, amazingly clarity and absolutely zero ghosting. A great picture with a lot of punch. I'd recommend this tv to anyone.
moogoo122 11-20-06, 07:21 PM so someone replied that the mtk mddi chipset is better than the pixelwork dnx processor, is there any particular issues w/ different resolutions or will i even see much of a difference?

Evil Dementia 11-20-06, 10:23 PM After reading all the horror stories of Standard Definition cable on the 532H, I'm trying to find a way to upscale all standard cable to 720P to my 532H cheaply (under $300 or so?).
Is this possible? I use my Xbox 360 for dvd's so I have dvd's covered in 720P and 1080I. And, obviously my xbox360 also covers the gaming arena in those resolutions. So all I'm left with is SD cable needing a fix.
Anyone have any suggestions of a cheap way to upscale SD cable channels to 720P? I've been searching for a week or so and it's confusing me more than helping.
I just received my 542I from thenerds.net and I am very happy, this is one sweet TV and anyone in the market for a low price 42" LCD should really take a view of this set. I fed it with HD (OTA ATSC tuner), HDMI Sony DVR and my video processor (VP50, yes I know, it cost 2x the cost of the TV, but I already had it for my home theatre and plan on splitting the HDMI output from it) and all I can say is WOW, and I have not even calibrated it yet. BUT, I will give a FYI, do not feed it a Dolby Digital audio signal over HDMI or you get no audio, you need to change it to a PCM output and it is fine, that is if you are using the internal speakers.
Jim
I've had my 537h for over a month now and love it.
Last week I got a Bravo D1 DVD player from newegg really cheap - 44 including shipping. Did the prescribed capacitor replacement on the power supply board with a RS 35v 1000uF capacitor (takes about 10 minutes). Set the player to output 1366x768 for perfect 1:1 pixel match with the TV via a DVI to HDMI cable. All I can say is WOW! If you're not afraid of a little soldering, this is one heck of a bang for your buck.
I had been using and HTPC with a dscaler>ffdshow>zoomplayer setup and this player is good enough to stop hassling with that setup.

I've decided on an Olevia 42" LCD TV but can't decide between two. Please keep in mind that I do NOT watch any television or play games. I only watch DVDs and will possibly use it as my pc monitor. That's it. (I just really want to enjoy my DVDs when I watch them!)
The two I'm trying to decide between are the
1) Olevia Black 42" 16:9 8ms LCD HDTV w/ Built-in ATSC Tuner Model LT42HVI - Retail (What's the difference between 'Retail' and 'OEM'?)
and
2) Olevia Black 42" 16:9 8ms State-of-the-Art LCD HDTV W/ ATSC Tuner Inside Model 542i - Retail
Which is the best for watching DVDs? Please just assume I have a great DVD player when advising. (I'm in the market for one with the TV.) #1 is almost double the price. Is it worth it? Thanks for your help!
Goldorak 11-21-06, 01:00 AM Hi!
I checked the Olevia website and I can't seem to find the instructions on how to remove the bottom speakers/stand and how to mount the 537h to the wall (I bought a Peerless mount). Those instructions are NOT in the User's Manual :(
So, how many and which screws do I need to remove to get rid of the stand and speakers?
Thanks a bunch.

AFter much experimentation, I must say Nvidia PureHD decoders > all others. Especially with an Nvidia card.
Goldorak -
That's because the speakers on the 537h can't be removed.
You need to remove eight screws to remove the stand.
Primestar31 11-21-06, 07:32 AM Just grabbed an Olevia 537H from Amazon (ships from Target) last night for $7**.**. Today it went back up to $9**.** Killer deal, 2 bills cheaper, I just couldn't wait any longer. I've been researching HDTV for well over a year, and figured it was just time to jump, before I went completely crazy from the stress of research! I can't wait for it to be delivered. I also ordered and assortment of cables from Monoprice.
Can anybody tell me this: Are the Composite connectors, and the S-Video connectors independently selectable? Meaning I hope that they don't share the video connection like so many others do, such as you use the s-video OR composite, but not both on a particular port.
Boy, after writing all that, I'm really confused!

AFAIK... the only shared port on the 537 is the third component connector that shares the same port as the VGA.

If it is like the 542I, 4 screws mount the stand to the tv, on your tv, the speakers cannot be removed---sorry. The screws used to mount a wall mount on the 542I are M6 X 16mm and maybe the same on yours---I had to call tech support for that info, customer service was no help.

MilChad 11-21-06, 09:15 AM Anybody own the 342i? I'm interested in a 42" LCD and I don't need the built-in tuner since I have D* and use my HD receiver's tuner. I just need to know whether or not Olevia builds a quality set before I take the plunge. So far I've read a lot of positive comments on the 5 series, but not too much on the 3 series.

427, 432, 527, and 523 ( and maybe the 232, 227 ) are all irreperably flawed with a 480i/p bug that Syntax will not be fixing. Search the forum for my thread on the 532h.
my 427 does not exhibit any of the problems you have. none.
I am about to buy my first LCD flat panel. I am trying to decide between the Syntax 542I and Westinghouse 4207. Both have good reviews the only diff I see is 542I has a tuner and supports 1080i. Is there a big difference between 720p and 1080i?
mcgurgd 11-21-06, 11:41 AM Funny thing - I placed a cancel order request for my 332H because I was told it was backordered with no ETA for shipment, and then I magically received a "shipped" notice.

The 542i is the current 42" model, the LT42HVI is last years. According to Olevia the engineering of the 542 makes it a better option than last years model- basically they seem to have the same specs, but the 542 now offers more/better menu features/options. When I originally started researching Olevia LCDs I was looking at the LT37HVS (or whatever) and wasn't considering the 42"- couldn't justify the cost for 5 more inches and removeable speakers. Now, I am highly considering the 542- at this point I think I would get the 542 or another technology (dlp, etc)
duhfactor 11-21-06, 05:35 PM I call olevia to find out the difference between the 237v & 537h other than the speaker position and the processor ATI 237v & MTK 537h the 537h have have more internal tweeking in the menu controls
I have been doing more research and also talked to Olevia in depth. The 237 & 437 are identical except for the color. They don't the ability to adjust picture temperature as well as the 537.
The 237 has a mode call IDEA which gives you access to a few controls for temp. here they are: Black Leverl Extender, NR (Noise Reduction), Flesh Tone (reduces red), Adaptive Luma Control, Contrast Enhance, and White Peak Limiter.
The 537 gives you control over each color in both 6500K and 9300K. It does not have the IDEA settings.
Since these differences are only for analog signals its not really a big deal!!
According to the UG the 237 has IDIVA (multiple reverb settings for sound) but Olevia TS said that is a mistake, only the 5 and 7 models have those settings. Funny because the 537 UG doesn't even show it.
The 537 has 2 more timers which allow timed TV on/offs, similar to the sleep timer.
The warranty is carry-in for the 237/437s and on-site for the 537.
Also, as everyone probably knows, the 237/437s have vertical speakers while the 537 has horizontal speakers.
Other than that they are identical. Same screens and electronics. Both are similarly priced so it really comes down to style as I see it!
If anyone who already owns one of these can verify this information it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Anyone know what's the facts are?
For more fun the website says the chipsets are the same - Both MTK:

Primestar - As you cycle through the Source selector, there are individual choices for Composite 1, Composite 2, S-Video 1, and S-Video 2. I think I remember reading in the manual that you can't do Picture-In-Picture (PIP) or split-screen using both composite inputs simultaneously, or using both S-video inputs simultaneously, but the manual is wrong about several things....I can't say much about their independence other than that, b/c I'm having problems with the PIP on my new 537H.
Basically, PIP is forcing me to have HDMI as one of the picture sources, either the main or the sub. I don't have an HDMI input source right now, so I can't use PIP. Emailed Olevia but haven't heard back yet. Anyone else having this problem?

There are other comments earlier in the thread regarding this, but everything below the 7xx series has "limited" PIP capability. Your description of having hdmi and one other seems accurate from what I remember others saying for it's capability-

I am glad I ordered an HDMI cable from monoprice. I guess I will put my HD DVR on HDMI, and then PIP out to other options...
Thanks for the heads up...
duhfactor 11-21-06, 07:02 PM Not so... the 537 does have IDEA settings.

Actually I glad it does as these look like some nice settings for analog settings.
The TS and UG are pretty much useless from Olevia. When I was talking to TS the guy guaranteed me that the S-video section was completely separate from the composite inputs. The UG implies just the opposite and I would guess that the TS guy didn't know what he was stating and that the S-Video circuits are shared with the stand AV circuits - pretty standard for the industry.
Again, since I don't have one yet, I hope that someone actually tests these 'facts' and let us know the reality of it all!!!
12bob21 11-21-06, 07:15 PM I just got my Cable Box(3250HD) today from Charter today and I'm having a problem using it on the 537H. On the analog channels I cant resize the picture (full screen, zoom or 1:1). The strange thing is when I hit the display button it's showing 1080i when I know it's really 480i. I went back to cable without the box and everything is fine. When I use the box is it because the TV thinks it's getting a 1080i signal that I can't resize? Also I'm getting that white noise line at the top of the screen that a few people have mentioned when viewing std programming on HD channels. Any solutions to that problem? I think someone mentioned turning something off but I wasn't sure what he was talking about. Thanks
wubeone 11-21-06, 07:52 PM I just got my new 542i from MWAVE Saturday. I only have DirectTV STD receiver. So far the STD looks good. Most setting is factory default and using native color temputare. No ghosting I can notice watching NBA. I will get Charter HDTV receiver and service soon. Once I get everything setup, I will post more report.
Any suggestion about how to tweak the settings? There are too many and some of them (the "ideas") I cant really tell the difference. It's in a mid-size bed room with low light. Mainly watching sports. Your recommendation is appreciated.

Are you using HDMI from the box to the 537? And is the box set to output only 1080i? If so, that's probly why yr losing the zooms. I have a Motorola Moxi set to output all resolutions, so it passes "native" res to the TV, which does the scaling. I also have it connected via component. All zooms function. My DVD Recorder, on the other hand, upscales to 1080i and is connected via HDMI and I have the limited zooms.
BTW: what is the 3250HD box? DVR? Brand? Just curious. I'm on Charter in St. Louis and haven't heard of that model number...
elgibby 11-21-06, 07:57 PM Actually I glad it does as these look like some nice settings for analog settings.
I'm really happy with the settings. I activated the IDEA settings and I'm satisfied even with SD signals. I have an Avia calibration disc but so far haven't been moved to use it. I'd love to see two 537s side by side, one with out of the box settings and one with pro calibration. The pic esp in HD blows me away now, can't imagine it better!

It sounds like your STB is set to output 1080i for everything, which means the STB is doing the scaling on everything. They normally come set to output 1080i on everything by the cable techs. I do not know WHY they do it this way, but none of them seem to even have HDTVs themselves so they do not know the best setup for them.
Here is a link to what I posted at another site about setting up my SA 3250HD:
http://www.hometheaterspot.com/htsthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/766515/an/0/page/0#Post766515
You can go into the setup of your Scientific Atlanta HD3250 cable box and turn off any resolutions your display cannot use. I turned off 480i & 480i widescreen signals because they were darker than the other resolutions including 480p with my cable company (this was a problem with MY cable co that is now fixed). Now my SD PQ is much better, because it shows the picture in 480p on all SD signals. You also have to change the Format output to "Pass Through" in the SA cable box. It improved both the analog channels AND the digital (non-HD) channels too!
By changing to the 480p minimum resolution in the cable box, the HD3250 will upconvert all 480i signals to 480p automatically (like a progressive scan DVD vs. non-PS).
It made the brightness level the same whether watching SD or HD channels. It drove me nuts when switching between the two types, because the SD channel was darker than the HD channels and I was sick of fiddling with the brightness level. It also seemed to reduce the video noise too!
Another benefit to this is the gamma is the same whether I am watching SD or HD signals. No more darker picture when watching SD programming. My DLP TV actually up-converts everything to 720p (native res).
To get into the setup wizard do this:
Make sure the TV is ON.
Make sure the HD3250 is OFF.
Press INFO & GUIDE buttons on the BOX (not remote) at the same time.
Select the advanced setup wizard and only setup the following resolutions:
480p, 720p, & 1080i
You set it up this way so that when you use the Pass-Through option (explained below) in the Cable box it allows this signal to go to the TV so the TV can do the conversion to 1080i. It probably does it better than the cable box does (at least on mine it does).
After you get it all done hit the power button on the cable box to save the changes. Then hit the MENU/Settings button on the remote TWICE. Scroll up to the Set: Picture Format and choose Pass-Through.
You can also try; Fixed, & Upscale 1 too. Upscale 1 converts all HD to 1080i, and all all 480i to 480p SD signals, but it is the cable box doing the scaling. Upscale 2 works the same way but scales all HD signals to 720p which, if you have a CRT RPTV, it probably will not display. It also upscales 480i to 480p with the Upscale 2 setting too.
Then hit exit.
This should work with all Scientific Atlanta cable boxes, but your mileage may vary, depending on your TV. Some TVs do not allow aspect control with even 480p signals from within the TV, but you can still hit the # button on the SA remote to toggle between Normal, Stretch, & Zoom.
Hope this helps!
Buckeyefan 11-21-06, 10:04 PM I just got my new 542i from MWAVE Saturday.
Out of the box, change the color temperature to Native. Bump up the sharpness to 75%, and the contrast up slightly. With the remote, select "bright room." With the IDEA settings, select "on" with contrast enhancer. See what you think.
aaranddeeman 11-21-06, 10:11 PM Hi!
Are you sure?
As far as I know (from reading), the V and H models (like 537H, 237V) are with fixed speakers. Only I (like 542i) are with removable speakers.
I guess you should be able to remove just the stand. ;)
tasandmnm 11-21-06, 10:37 PM I am looking at either the 337 or the 532 from Microcenter. As I understand it they use different chips and the 337 does not have a tuner built in which isn't a big deal to me since my HD content will come through my cable box and my Xbox 360 anyway. I have seen all the positive and negative comments on the 532, but haven't sen anything here about the 337. Any recommendations?
tonychris 11-21-06, 10:39 PM Has anyone actually seen a 542i in a showroom next to other sets?
This is the reason I ask: I went to check it out because of the incredible price Microcenter will have on the 542i on Black Friday. I played with the settings for a while and was able to get good looking color and hues, flesh tones were accurate with no exagerations. However, when compared to every other set near it, the Olevia simply didn't seem as crisp or vivid. There were cheaper models right next to it that look fantastic with crisp detail. If you saw the set by itself you might think it was a good pictire, but when compared to other sets at the same time you can see the "softness" and lack of detail.
I played with various settings, like turning noise reduction off (which can soften a picture), increasing sharpness, but it still couldn't match the other sets around it which were getting the same video feed via component cables.
Was I missing something? Or is the 542i just an "ok" LCD TV? I would love to be proven wrong because I'm seriously considering getting it since the price will be incredibly low for a 42" LCD.
All insights appreciated.

A 42" LCD for $799 isn't going to look like a $2500 LCD. You get what you pay for. It's all relative. That set will look wonderful in your house, so just go buy it and be happy you saved a bunch of money. You know you still want it. ;)

Appreciate the insights, but if you read my comments you'll see that this set looked WORSE than sets that were cheaper than it. I agree, I don't expect it to look like a more expensive set. But I expect it to hold it's own against a no name brand. It didn't.
KrisJones 11-22-06, 12:09 AM I have the 532h and was wondering if the format between 1080i, 480p, and 720p could be manually adjusted on the T.V. or if it is just for the player, such as a gaming console or DVD player. Thanks.

Were the other tv's you saw the same size? What brands were they?

Once you get it home, be sure to turn off the showroom settings. And trust me. I saw my set at Microcenter and wasn't impressed. So I just kept reading the reviews here and took a chance. HDTV at home vs showroom is truly night and day. If this forum didn't exist, I would have never bought the 537H based on the Microcenter showroom. I'd imagine the 542i is the same
I'll just put it like this; at home, my 537H >>>>>> all the other sets there based on their showroom setups. Truly night and day. There's a reason this thread speaks highly of them, and its not for fanboy reasons. If the set wasn't all that, it would have been returned the same day.

Where did you guys find that price? Is that for the 542i? I purchased my 542i from Microcenter last month for 1499. I wondering if they will do a price match.
If that is the price, lets say, i'm more then a little pissed.
I have the 532h and was wondering if the format between 1080i, 480p, and 720p could be manually adjusted on the T.V. or if it is just for the player, such as a gaming console or DVD player. Thanks.
As I undertsand it, the format will be determined by the source, not the set, so a progressive scan dvd will always be 480p, but an upconverting dvd player will feed it in at 720p. That's why you have to set a PC to output at a resolution the TV can handle rather than the other way around.
So KrisJones, please weigh in, before reading AVSforums had you ever noticed ghosting on DVD's or non-HD TV? Since reading the thread do you see it, and is it a serious distraction? I'm not doubting Snowmoon that an issue exists, I'd just like to hear from someone else with the 532h as to how noticeable or problematic it is in regular use.

Are you also posting on FW?
I would imagine that you saw the 542i next to smaller sets, the 32 and 37.
Since they all have the same amount of pixels, there is no way that the 42 can have as much detail when viewed from 2 feet as a set which is about 40% smaller but has the same amount of detail.
To the recent purchaser of the 542i. The price is still officially $1490, but on Black Friday they are going to have a drastic price reductions on the Olevia TVs to try to get people into the store. The final price is a combination of instant rebate and MIR. I guess you could try to go on Friday and see if they will do a price match, but I do not think that will get you the last $200 savings of the MIR.
stockwiz 11-22-06, 12:30 PM Just got my 537h. Beautiful picture, although one pixel is stuck blue on the screen. Once I get a male to male VGA cable I'll try using software solutions to free it. It's virtually unnoticable when watching the set because it's a dark blue.. have to be looking for it. Not much I can do but suck it up as I can't return it for one dead pixel. Love the sound on the set too, better then I expected. Overall I'm annoyed that I didn't just wait one week to see the mass of deals that came out which could have gotten me a 37w3 for the same price which would have been 1080p but overall I'm still very pleased with the set and the price I got.
Goldorak 11-22-06, 04:57 PM Just wanted to let you guys know that the "wrong day of the month bug" on the 537h has been fixed with a new firmware release. Juan from Olevia tech support just sent me an e-mail about that.
Well.. I received my 542I today after a little over a Week from "TheNerds".. The Container was perfect upon receipt... the unit was very nice looking... Packing was fine... The only issue I had is that IT WOULD NOT POWER UP!!... A little problem to say the least... Are you kidding me... I have read similar problems in the forums.. but I figured it wouldn't happen to me..right..WRONG!... Geez.. Olevia is going to send me a new Unit and pick up my broken one, but who knows how long that will take...
Oh and another thing.. I bought a Peerless Mount for this and the Screws that they include to screw the Brakets onto the TV are Security Screws (the ones with the little nipple in the middle/hex head)...Of course thye don't send the BIT... So I drive to Home Depot and they don't even carry the Bit for those screws... So I had to buy a Phillips set from HD in the same size... Not that I got to even try to mount the thing...argh....
Rob
What I noticed on my 542i was that It looked like the LOWER speakers can be Mounted on the SIde using the same Brackets? Am I wrong... I know Olevia needed a kit on the 4 series to move the speakers but maybe the 5 series does not? I am dumping the speakers anyways... But just a heads up...

Did you find a little rocker switch on the back where the power cord attaches? It's a master power switch. Several people here missed it; friend of mine bought the 537 on my recommendation and had the same problem.... thought he had a dead set.

No..I rocked the HEck out of it.... Changed power cables/outlets etc... If only it was that simple... Not even a Spark of interest in starting up..
And they don't send out repair guys for this stuff...

Thanks for trying though..

Maybe people just didn't notice it, but I did when I configured the TV. Just set the date on a 537h, e.g. Nov. 20 2006. The day will say Wednesday instead of Monday. That's because the November and December month are switched (Dec 20 2006 is a Wednesday).

12bob21 11-22-06, 06:34 PM It sounds like your STB is set to output 1080i for everything, which means the STB is doing the scaling on everything. They normally come set to output 1080i on everything by the cable techs. I do not know WHY they do it this way, but none of them seem to even have HDTVs themselves so they do not know the best setup for them.
Here is a link to what I posted at another site about setting up my SA 3250HD:

PFC5 - Thank You for the reply. That solved the resizing problem. Now If I can only get rid of those flickering white dashes on the top. I'm getting them on all channels now not just HD. You can hide them by changing the vertical position slightly but for some reason the TV won't save the setting. I wonder if this is a bug in the TV. Maybe I'll give Olevia a call to see what they say.

Other people have commented on this, it appears to be the closed captioning info encoded with the signal. Do you still have the problem if you are watching something other than from the STB (ie qam/dvd/OTA/games)? If not, it sounds like the closed captioning issue.

I found the first post where it was mentioned that the white lines are caused by the closed captioning (back in sept). I read all the posts between then and now refering to the problem with the only resolution is to change the vertical position. The only problem is you can't save the setting. One guy snowmoon talked about turning off Big Picture support but I have no idea what he was talking about. So if I missed the solution to the problem please post it again. Thanks
Am going to purchase a 542i from Microcenter this Friday . Should I purchase extended warranty from Microcenter or Syntax ? Folks who purchased from either of them, can you please share your experience.

If you live near a Microcenter (I would read through the warranty to see what all is covered) but generally I would go with the place closest to you so you don't have to worry about shipping it out and shipping it back to you where you will be out a tv for quite a while. If they just ship it to Syntax for repair/replacement, just stick with Syntax, no reason for a middle man.

Hopefully someone with the tv can give you a definitive answer, but my understanding (hopefully this helps). Is that you have the two basic 'backlight' settings of home and showroom. For things like 'warm' and 'cool' they have the options of 6500 and 9200 (or whatever it is) temperature- which is what those refer to red/blue push.
I tried searching for a UG online but no success-
kingofthenet 11-23-06, 01:26 AM I hope you weren't comparing the Olevia to "Westinghouses" First off I don't buy LCD TV's from companies whose MAIN business is washing machines..., secondly I have heard reports that Westinghouse "Overdrives" the backlight to give that "SUPER" bright look, and it will fail prematurely, along with other "tricks" that will shorten the life of the SET, OLEVIA is a Solid set, that doesn't play games.
Has anyone tried gaming on the 542i? I'm thinking about getting it but wanted to know how the Wii and Xbox would perform on it. It seems like there's varying reports of lag on some of the other models, but I couldn't find any comments regarding lag on the 542i. The user manual also makes no mention of a game mode fo the tv.

Not sure if your comment was directed at me or not. If it was directed at me, I did compare Olevia to Westinghouse and many other brands but decided to go with Olevia. The 237v is one of Olevia's 37" vertical speaker models along with the 437v and for the price I couldn't find any other brands that even came close.

yes I grabbed one on line, 474 with free shipping, but my brother in law could not get it to work two hours later. I don't know if they fixed the page or ran out of the online stock.
One less line to wait on for me!
Got one too..... Might still go out to BB and try to get the wife the Toshiba Laptop for 249.00

Don't know if it is an option for you but I use 2 input sources from my cable box to get around this issue. For HD sources I route through the HDMI input. For SD sourced I route through Component 1. This hides the flickering white dashes on the top for me. It does introduce additional cost (another set of cables), and you have know what channels are HD vs. SD but a Harmony remote has helped the wife and kids greatly with selecting the correct input if the picture doesn't look right.

aaranddeeman 11-23-06, 11:30 AM Well, I want to thank everyone on this thread!!!
I took the leap and purchased a 237v from newegg. Newegg posted such an unbelievable price that I had to buy, I mean "I HAD TO BUY!!!" It was so much cheaper than anything out there for this size and apparent quality.
I was getting a little frustrated because all the really good deals were for the 537h. I'm sure glad I didn't give up and my patience paid off.
Thanks again everyone! :o)
Duhfactor,
Could you please post your review once you get the 237V.
I like the speaker side mounted and hence liked the 237V compared to 537H.
I amy compromise (for the price point) with 542i at MC, but again if I get one else I have to go back to my favourite 237V.
;)

Sure thing. By the way, the 237v is currently under $700 at newegg so that makes it a fantastic bargain. It's pretty much the 537 with side speakers so it should perform identical to the 537.
I ordered the 537h from Target on Monday evening and it said I would get it around Dec 3. Imagine my suprise when I came home yesterday and it was here. From my first impression it looks very good in both SD and HD. No buyers remorse here. I have been watching the price on this TV for a while and decided Target with the 10% was my price point and bought it with the 3 year warranty with no regrets.

LMAO! No it doesn't!!!
weberman 11-23-06, 04:34 PM Sorry for the repost. I put this in another thread and it seems this is a better place for my question.
I have been trying to find a Olevia 537H to see what it looks like. No one has the set. CompUSA still has the LT37HVS . I was not impressed. The blacks looked more dark gray than black. There was an LG on one side and an Sharp on the other side. Both had better blacks. I don't know about any TV settings and whether the blacls on the LT37 could be improved. I don't want to buy online without first previewing the TV. I understand that the 537H is supposed to be a much better TV than the LT37.
Comments from anyone with a 537H concerning the black levels would be appreciated. I have seen prices on the 537H for $500 less than the CompUSA price on the LT37 which I believe, not sure, has been discontinued.
I see some of you have the 537. Your input would be helpful.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. And for those of you that are going to brave Black Friday, Stay Safe.

I got it off of Olevia's website. Here's a link to the 237 info page:
http://www.olevia.com/jsp/products/detail.jsp?pid=237V
At the bottom of the item menu on the left you should see a 'Printer Friendly Specs' link just under the Download Information. This is the link to the latest specification PDF file.
Anyone use a universal remote with "discrete" input codes so you can go from HDMI directly to the ATSC tuner and vica-versa ?
Thanks

I also just ordered the 537h from target.com. I have never used Target.com and I have never seen the 537h in person. So, I was also concerned about the return policy. I called them and they told me, I can cancel befor it ships, I can refuse delivery after it ships, and I can return it, if defective, within 90 days for a full refund including shipping. If not defective, you pay for shipping. However, if I have to return it, of course it will be "defective". Seems like very little risk, but the price almost seems too good to be true.
PaulNEPats 11-23-06, 11:55 PM I have a 30" Philips CRT HDTV right now, but I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the 237v from Newegg. The only thing holding me back is that I'm not sure how much of an upgrade this is, overall. And whether it's putting $700 to good use. Any comments?
nordloewelabs 11-24-06, 12:38 AM just want to add my 2 cents on the discussion about the video processor of the 237v model.... my guess is that it uses MTK. i say that based on a few factors:
1. the specifications shown on [EDIT].
2. the product's page (http://www.olevia.com/jsp/products/specs.jsp?pid=237v) on Olevia's site states that.
3. the word "MTK" appears on the filename of the online PDF manual (http://www.olevia.com/jsp/products/pdf/UM-En_MTK_237_240_242_060824.pdf).
4. this page (http://www.olevia.com/jsp/support/downloads.jsp) at Olevia's site suggests that all TVs with 37, 40 and 42 inches use the MTK processor. all TVs smaller than 37 inches seem to use ATI.... well, at least for series 3 and above.
