Darkmatter 11-29-06, 03:47 PM Hey darkmatter ... I have the luxury of doing side by side comparisons between cable box HD and over the air (via htpc). The wife and kids were out of town a few weeks ago and I spent several hours on Sunday afternoon doing this comparison while watching NASCAR on NBC and football on CBS and ABC. The bottom line is that the differences were very minor. The over the air picture was just a tad cleaner (as expected) but I was pleased with the cable box image. I couldn't notice any difference at greater than 6 feet.
A much better discussion would be the comparison between 720p and 1080i. I've noticed that 720p on Fox and ABC is MUCH better at fast motion than 1080i on NBC and CBS but 1080i looks a little sharper on static images (think halftime shows). Right now I'd give ABC college football my best rating followed closely by Fox. I noticed a lot of macroblocking during the HD Madona concert on NBC the other night. Is it macroblocking or mpeg2 artifacting? I don't know for sure but it was very distracting.
Yes I've noticed the same issues with NBC/CBS HD. They both look pretty awful imo except the more static scenes as you've noted. Fox looks much better and doesn't devolve into a sea of tiny blocks nearly as often.
scoobydoo 11-29-06, 03:50 PM Just wanted to post in this HUGE thread since I just purchased a 337H from Fry's yesterday and I am anxiously awaiting delivery.
I have been a member for a long time, but haven't posted much since I have been living with my 40" Mitsubishi tube and SDTV until now.
I am new to the whole HDTV thing and I am looking forward to joining the site again:)
Primestar31 11-29-06, 08:39 PM As previously posted, the Dish remote codes in the manual for the 537H don't work. After much trial and error, I've found that code 3030 works to control my Dish Network 301 receiver and also the basic satellite functions on my 508 DishPVR. I can't get the Olevia universal remote to control the PVR functions though.
Code 3050, which shows as a "Dish Network Sat DVR" in the code lists, works with my Dish 6000HD receiver, using "STB" button.
KMacBlue 11-29-06, 10:35 PM I didnt want to mess with my settings too much at first, but i have found that using an HDMI cable has helped substantially in reducing the pixelation and blockiness around moving characters. I had a comcast technician visit my house today, she was VERY knowledgeable and said that comcast sends a better signal via 1080i than via 720p. She mentioned that this had to do with the signal compression and that 720p was more compressed than 1080i over comcast (i dont see why that would be the case, but these are her words, not mine). Also, turning the sharpness on the TV down to 35% really helps reduce pixelation as well, the higher the sharpness setting the more i notice the pixelation (HDMI cables). I think in the future that i will be using 720p for ESPN, FOX and ABC when i sit down to watch an entire game (or record a game), however i will be using 1080i otherwise.
Conclusion: the problem here must be more comcast related than Olevia 337H related. As 720p on my ps3 comes in absolutely beautifully (HDMI). 720p resolution on ps3 for games or blu-ray looks better than 1080i through comcast. The 3 series models do not have a built in tuner, so i cant compare OTA signals.
P.S. Ever since i got this TV i have noticed that NBA League Pass has VERY small bars on the top and bottom of the screen, not the sides. And these are not the standard letterbox bars, they are very small, but just noticeable enough to be annoying and not full screen. Anyone else have league pass and notice this?
Also, why does increasing noise reduction tend to mess with the PQ, i would think it would increase the PQ? At the previous poster's suggestion, i have turned it off.
mike208 11-30-06, 07:56 AM Not sure if this is the right thread for this. But i bought an Olevia 337h on black friday. And I have since noticed a low hum or whine from the speakers when an audio source is connected to the right and left composites. The hum is there even when the sound is muted(or at least when my tivo was paused, not actually muted). It raises and lowers with the volume, if you turn the volume up the whine gets louder, if you turn it down, the whine gets softer.
It is present for both my tivo and cable box, they are both connected by svideo and composite audio using a switch box. I bypassed the switch and plugged them directly to the TV and had the same problem, so I am pretty sure it is a problem with the TV. Is this a known issue, any way to fix it? Should I exchange the TV for another one or will it have the same problem?
Thanks

Try turning down the bass in the tv's audio settings. Otherwise (most likely) something needs to be grounded better.
Does anyone play Wii (or any other consules) on these Olevia televisions? What are your impressions? Is there (noticeable) lag?
Which model Olevia do you have?

It sounds like a grounding issue. One way to check is use a cheater plug (3 prong to 2 prong converter). If the hum goes away, you've got a grounding problem that's not related to the 337. It is also advisable to disconnect the cable box. If it is a gounding issue, the hum can be introduced from any appliance in the chain, not just the display. This is a fairly common problem in audio.

Mike Lang 11-30-06, 05:55 PM Hey guys, I'm looking to add a 532H to the theater as a secondary screen. I want to send 2 HD signals. Am I correct that I can send 720p/1080i from a HD TiVo over component to the Olevia's VGA input and it also has a composite audio input dedicated to the VGA? Thanks.
daveWVU 11-30-06, 11:16 PM Hey, have any of you tried programming a 542i to a universal remote? What manufactuer codes do you use? On my older 20" Olevia I think I had to use an RCA code. I've tried a bunch so far and can't find one that works
I bought the MediaPilot keyboard from Belkin today and I'm all sorts of excited...but I can't get it to work the TV. You guys should check it out if it works. Its a wirless keyboard with a built in 8 component universal remote with learning capability. $89.99 at MicroCenter and it recharges via usb:-)
Hammer Headly 11-30-06, 11:23 PM I just received my 332h from tigerdirect. The TV appears to be unresponsive. The blue indicator light is on, however, there is no response from the power button. I tried both the VGA input and the S-Video input from my computer to see if either would work, but it was to no avail. Has anyone else had this problem right out of the box? do I need to upgrade the firmware?
Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This unit can take 2 componient signals one over RCA and the other over the VGA port, yes. Monoprice has the cables for a bargain as always.
The unit takes L/R rca audio for all inputs.

About the last question, noise reduction in most cases is basically a sharpness control. A sharpness control will reduce detail in a video image, and if it is turned up too high, it will add extra edges to objects in the image. Use a THX movie dvd-some have video tuning chapters included, or Video Essentials and try tuning the video image on your TV, you will be amazed at how some controls actually work opposite of what we would think they actually control. On mine the bright, sharp, color, and contrast were all needing adjustment as it came from the manufacturer.

Thanks, you just answered my question as well... I was looking for a 7 series thread thinking these suckers were widely available. $3999 is expensive... WOW, I'd like to hear some impressions. Is the price due to the new Silicon Optix HQV processor? What gives on the price?!

On my 537H there is a master power button hidden in the back near the power cord outlet, check to see if you have one also on that model, that may be all it is.

Most likely. If you look at the HQV website (http://www.hqv.com), the Olevia 7 series is the only flat panel with this chipset. All the other listed devices are either FP or standalone video processors. I find that interesting. Other CE manufacturers may have HQV sets in development, but I haven't seen any announcements. CES 2007 is in January. Maybe we'll hear something new then.
Jim Hef 12-01-06, 01:00 PM ...The blue indicator light is on, however, there is no response from the power button....
The blue light is the "standby" mode indicator. When you push the power button on the remote, the blue light will go off, and the screen remains blank for about 8-10 seconds or so. Then, you will get an Olevia logo screen..blue logo on white background. You don't see a picture for what feels like eternity, so hang in there. If nothing happens after that, then you have a problem set.

For me, I pressed the power button on the remote it showed the White bg Olevia Logo & then went to a blue screen. After that I switched to component, turned on my xbox360, and it worked fine.
snowmoon 12-01-06, 01:38 PM Thanks, I thought I heard somewhere that there was a problem assigning one of the audio inputs to the VGA.
Hmmm there is a L/R Rca right next to the VGA, and since you can't use both the VGA and the VGA/componient I don't see how that would be a problem.

I just called Olevia's customer service and I was told that the 747i will not be available for a month or so. I was told it was due to the fact that they were still working on stand issues.

Hammer Headly 12-01-06, 07:06 PM Thanks for the recommendations folks. Turns out the unit is defective (my A/V genious father ran some tests). I've already spoken to Olevia and the replacement unit is on the way.
Thanks again!
Well my 542i Olevia experiment is probably over. After 3 days of operation, day 4 brought a "no power up" I disconneted the power for a few minutes and tried again, the set powered up. I turned it off again to confirm the original incident was a fluke, nada!. I get the blue LED, but nothing else, waited as much as an hour with the set disconnected from power, still nothing. I tried different outlets, different power cords, forget it!
I'll be off to to the Tustin MC on Sunday, if they don't have a factory fresh replacement on hand, it's a refund and a wait for the next deal, which won't be a 42" Olevia. To heavy, stupid power off blue "Lighthouse" of an LED (bedroom unit), PIP issues, and no remote codes short of buying a $100+ Harmony.
Nice try Olevia, but no cigar.

wow? too heavy? the set is exactly average for 42". the base is nice and wide and heavy. this makes it very stable and is an asset if you use the stand. moreover the stand and iron rails come off easily if you want to hang it (as to the speakers.)
as far as the led, this is a bit much to complain about. half the electronics on the maket have standby lights that are bright in the beadroom. my wife's apple g5 standby led lights up the room -- that is until one makes the investment of putting a tiny piece of electric tape over the led.
my pip is working perfect.
on remote codes, my $15 "all in one remote" copied every single function just fine. it took me five minutes.

Visio GV42L with stand 74 lbs
Westinghouse LVM-42W2 with stand 57 LBS
Toshiba P42LSA with stand 76 lbs
and drum roll please! Olevia 542i 96 lbs.
20+ pounds more, which was the difference in my wife not being able to effectively help me lift this behemoth up onto the new Cherrywood stand that I bought. Yep nice LARGE deep scratch on that new stand. And why should someone whom paid $800, let alone the people who are paying full fare ($1300), have to pay one more cent for another remote?

You are comparing sets with NO Speakers, , tiny speakers, no tuners to a set with 20 watt speakers AND a tuner. Do you know the difference between a display and a TV? I have computer lcd moniters that weigh less than equivalent ldc HDTVs with tuners and speakers as well? Does the 42 westy you compared with have a tuner? etc.
It looks like your problem is that you bought a large TV with the hopes it would fit on a specific piece of furniture. You are comparing it to one you already have with 40% smaller, with no tuner, tiny speakers speakers etc. Sure it is lighter!
438" sq inches for your 32" westy vs. 738" sq inches for the 542i you returned. do the math.
Again, the 542i has a subtantial speakers, a substantial stable base, AND a tuner. You can easily remove the speakers and base and the unit isn't at all heavy for hanging on the wall, my 100lb wife and I just hung it ourselves.
As far as the remote you keep saying you need a $100 harmony. As I said you can get a $15 universal that will program every single function that remote. Learning remotes require no codes.
mattford11 12-02-06, 01:52 PM I get it off my Directv H20 but my Toshiba HDDVD seems fine. What source are you getting the flicker/dropout from?
Comcast HD-DVR, using a DVI-HDMI cable
What's Olevia's tech support response time usually like? I emailed them on Monday about my audio output turning off with the speakers and have yet to get a response. I also tried calling but it just rings with no answer.
Has anyone tried hacking the Olevia firmware? The ATI based ones might run linux (http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/Xilleon). The source code from some Sony Bravia models with the ATI Xilleon is available (http://products.sel.sony.com/opensource/source_tv.shtml).
hdtv542i 12-02-06, 03:59 PM What upconverting DVD players are people using with the 537H? I'm considering the OPPO 71 but it has some underscanning issues and that's a concern. I'm looking in the $150. - $300. range but the budget is flexible.
David
Fry's has the Panasonic DVD-S52 on sale this weekend for $80. I was amazed at the upgrade in picture quality over the HDMI interface when compared to my non-upscaling DVD players hooked up over component connection. The DVD-52S also has a wealth of useful fine adjustments for picture parameters. The built-in upconversion in the Olevia 542i is pretty good but the DVD-S52 is noticeably better in sharpness and gradient smoothness, in my opinion. It also appears to improve black detail and contrast but I'm not yet sure about that.
xythian04 12-02-06, 07:00 PM I'm noticing a lot of pixelation with Zelda: TP on the 537H. I have component cables and the Wii setup to 480p and 16:9. Component cables improve colors, but increase the number of jaggies, likely due to less image blurring. The 537H is brand new and has only been through the THX optimizer (color isn't the issue for me). Pixelation appears consistent through all screen modes (1:1, full, aspect).
537H pros, do you have any suggestions for Wii gaming? How does Zelda look on your sets? I feel like my display is inferior to the "comparison" screenshots I've seen on these forums and the gaming sites.
cwbywill 12-02-06, 08:19 PM hi guys jus :) t got the 537h and i look and cant seem to find the answer to my ? sorry if im asking the same ? again has anyone found the opimal settings for the 537h and help would be great thank you

I called Olevia a few days ago and the customer service rep told me they were available. I checked a dozen websites and calls a few stores. No one had it on their computers except...TigerDirect. The rep I spoke with called their distributor to see if he could special order it. He called me back and said they could order it, but it would take 2-3 weeks to deliver. He told me the price, not including deliver, was about $2750.
I'm personally a bit skeptical that they could actually get it given that no one else knows anything about it. So I decided to hold off. I'll wait a few more weeks to see if others pick it up. I'm also heading to CES, so I'd like to see the TV before ordering.

The prices have come down on 7-Series since most published articles and announcements were made. But they are still above average and the reason is not only because of the Silicon Optics processor, but because of all the other content as well: 4 tuners (2 HD and 2 NTSC) so you can do HD split screens and PIP; 2 HDMI inputs; Interchangable/removable speakers; RS232; USB; etc., etc...
My understanding is that the 747i is due to start shipping next week and the 742i ships around December 20.
Just a reminder....7-Series is not likely to be found at e-tailers. It is aimed at up-scale specialists and CEDIA-type dealer/installers who are supplied through certain distributors.

10 days to never. They've still not gotten back with me on the excessive distortion when the bass is turned up past 60%. This even effects the subwoofer output.
EricInGA 12-03-06, 06:53 PM My menu does not have Picture setting. Anyone know how to get this older model out of showroom mode?
Try: Menu, Picture, Mode, Power up.
EricInGA 12-03-06, 06:58 PM Here's a tip on a great programmable remote that can learn from virtually all IR remotes and it has macros. I'm using it with my Olevia 542i and DirectTV TiVo, and some audio components.
This is the Sony RM-VL600, which costs around $25 at WalMart, Best Buy, etc.
It doesn't look as cool as the Logitech Harmony, but it works very well and I love the price!
EricInGA 12-03-06, 07:16 PM I read in this thread that 542i has QAM tuner. What are these tuners for atsc/ntsc/qam. I have basic comcast cable [ $15 ]. I get around 20 digital stations. some are HD and some are not.
I have a 542i and I get all kinds of channels from the Comcast cable: analog, digital, and HD. My Olivia found them all automatically. I am not using any kind of cable box.
However, if you want premium channels or pay-per-view you'll need a cable box. There's also a range of channels I can't get from the cable (things like MSNBC), but I normally use DirectTV for most channels. I only utilize the cable to get HD channels.
I only have Limited Basic cable service, since it's basically free with cable internet service - they only charge a couple dollars more to get CATV service along with internet. So now I get my most important local channels in HDTV for almost nothing!
Buckeyefan 12-03-06, 09:56 PM I've got a Time Warner HD DVR. What would happen if I removed the DVR, and ran the cable right into the back of the 537? Would I lose channels 100 - 1100? Would I lose the HD channels in the 700 range? I never thought of bypassing the HD DVR, but the last post got me thinking. Is that what a QAM tuner does?

Primestar31 12-04-06, 11:42 AM As far as the remote you keep saying you need a $100 harmony. As I said you can get a $15 universal that will program every single function that remote. Learning remotes require no codes.
Aero12, would you be so kind as to post the exact name, and perhaps the model number of the remote you are refering to? Thanks!
stephenC 12-04-06, 11:51 AM Just a reminder....7-Series is not likely to be found at e-tailers. It is aimed at up-scale specialists and CEDIA-type dealer/installers who are supplied through certain distributors.
Interesting. So, I need to check with the AVSForum sponsors and see who is going to carry the Olevia 7xx series sets.
Thanks.

You seriously need to use some punctuation and capitalization to make it easier on the reader ;)
Let me help.

I posted this on the Official Olevia 537H, 437V & 237V Thread, I'd imagine the 237 and 537 have similar picture quality and setups.
Posting picture settings on the 237 is a bit hard in that there are no numbers to relate.
I've got brightness about 1/3 to less than 1/2. Contrast slightly past the middle. Color maybe at about the 60% area. Tint 1 or 2 notches past default middle. I set sharpness at about 1/4 for sd and off for hd sources. I set color at native instead of 65k because 65k looks way too red on my set.
For hd sources, I've got noise reduction off, adaptive luma off, flesh tone off, and contrast and white peak limiter on. For sd sources, I have noise reduction at medium and I turned the rest of the settings on.
I just eyeballed these settings switching between various ota hd channels, sd channels, and a few dvds.
I'd be interested in seeing what other people are coming up with.

The tuner will only go up to channel 125.
Primestar31 12-04-06, 02:19 PM My 537H is definately pushing yellow. I can set it to 93k instead of 65k, and that helps a lot on most inputs. However, I just hooked up my Charter Moxie DVR, using a DVI to HDMI cable from Monoprice. At 93k, on the HDMI, that now looks like it has a very slight push towards yellow again. Anybody have any fast ways to adjust this, short of running through the complete AVIA suite? Kinda sucks that they don't have number calibrations in their menu's, so nobody can easily share their settings.
I also set my Moxie to 16x9, and checked all the boxes for the resolutions in the menu. When I select a channel, it briefly goes to "NO SIGNAL", then you hear a slight click, and it comes up in whatever native resolution that channel is being broadcast in. Is that normal? Perhaps the tv is just much faster than the MOXIE, which waiting for the Moxie is like watching dirt erode before it does things. I love having a dvr, but this thing is a dog!
Anyway, help with the yellow push? I'm assuming I'll have to go into the menu for say the 65k-user setting, and tweak those?

True... but you have to sit there and learn the infrared signals. You don't with the Harmony's.
redgtconv 12-04-06, 04:02 PM I downloaded the latest firmware for the 537h to my laptop. Now how do I download it from my laptop to the 537h?
Jim Hef 12-04-06, 04:17 PM Type7, how are you making the settings distinctive for HD and SD channels? Are these coming through on different inputs in your case vs. a cable box?
Flatline 12-04-06, 04:29 PM I would like to repost the TIVO code question. Does anyone have a good code to put into the TIVO remote to control a 542?
In regards to Flux's post above. My XBOX 360 looks great in 720p and 1080i (I prefer 720p). Good luck on your return. I might suggest one thing. Ask a friend to borrow their 360 cables and see if that resolves the issue. You may need to buy new cables. My friend had a similar problem with his high priced Sharp (I do admit it has a better picture but at 3 times what I paid for mine). My cords worked fine. When he first called me I had to remind him to set the switch on the cord to HD. He had it on regular TV still. It got better but still had a problem. It is easier to go pick up a new cord than exchange the TV.
From a techsupport guy at syntaxbrillian:
START>
They are no Olevia codes out there for other remotes to use.
A Universal Learning remote will be able to read the Olevia frequencies
if you choose to go that route.
From the previous email:
>We do not have codes for our Tv's produced this year.
>
>The name brands you attempted we've found to have work for models
>produced in 2004/2005.
END<
So it doesn't look good for getting that tivo remote to work. I was quite disappointed as well.
Type7, how are you making the settings distinctive for HD and SD channels? Are these coming through on different inputs in your case vs. a cable box?
Yes, different inputs. Component, rf, and s-vid. They all seem to be able to hold different setups.
Interestingly the manual mentions that under - picture - mode - input, you can "select the video input source with varied qualities" and lists vcr, interlaced dvd, progressive dvd, standard def tv, high def tv, and user. I keep forgetting to mess with those to see what they actually do.
trap6days 12-04-06, 11:38 PM Here's a tip on a great programmable remote that can learn from virtually all IR remotes and it has macros. I'm using it with my Olevia 542i and DirectTV TiVo, and some audio components.
This is the Sony RM-VL600, which costs around $25 at WalMart, Best Buy, etc.
It doesn't look as cool as the Logitech Harmony, but it works very well and I love the price!
What do you do for the TiVo skip forward and backward buttons (+30sec and -10sec if the TiVo is like my DishPVR)? I thought about this remote, but I use the skip buttons *way* too much and it doesn't look like there are any extra buttons on the remote that could be used to learn these two functions?
phipp01 12-05-06, 06:04 AM I downloaded the latest firmware for the 537h to my laptop. Now how do I download it from my laptop to the 537h?
Check a few pages back I think around Thanksgiving weekend is the date I posted a few quick steps how to do it. :)
phipp01 12-05-06, 06:06 AM Polypro dont use the tv as your PC monitor to do the firmware update. D/L the update install the USB driver then you turn the TV on then it will tell you to choose the right comport. I had 1 choice com3. press step 1 the you disconnect the power cord for 10 seconds reconnect it power tv on then go to step 2 disconnect the powercord again for 10 seconds then your finished. Not a complete step by step but close. I just updated my 537h after owning it for 2 months and it was pretty easy. took half hour to D/L the update at a whopping 4k speed then 40 minutes to D/L the instructions.
There you go
I have owned my 537h for about a month now and still find some of the settings confusing. I was under the impression that all settings were applied to all inputs. Seems that is not the case. Do I select the individual source inputs and then adjust. The whole cube thing is a little bit of a pain although I have gotten much faster. Unless I revert to the factory settings/ factory settings by input they would remain in effect is my new understanding. If I choose HDMI for example on the remote and then bring up the cube for adjustment would this be the correct way or do I open the cube and select the input and then make adjustments. Please clarify. Thanks
netstroller 12-05-06, 06:58 AM I noticed there's a sort of mostly transparent layer of something on my display. It's almost like a slightly dirty screen, but it's not on the LCD. It's looks a little like what you'd get when washing glass with water and it leaves a thin layer of stain behind.
It's either inside the LCD or is part of the picture signal. It's not bad, I usually don't notice it from over seven feet or so. And I don't think it's there all the time, but not sure yet, maybe just not there for DVD playing, will have to experiment some more.
I've seen it mentioned in a thread before but now can't find it, and I can't remember if anyone said they knew how to get rid of it. Anybody know what it is and how to get rid of it, do you have it? I have a 542i. TIA

This is on purpose, and yes you select the individual source and adjust. The reason is so that you can calibrate the display to correctly match each of your different sources. Not every source outputs video exactly the same. Some of the HD cable channels occasionally show calibration screens you can use to calibrate cable tv. You can buy calibration disks for SD and HD disc players. Other inputs you just have to eye and make your best judgement/decide what looks best to you.
xythian04 12-05-06, 01:24 PM I've had my 537H for a couple of days and noticed a couple of quirks.
The SD channels appear slightly off center (too far to the left). I have to manually adjust the image to the right every time i switch between a HD and SD channel. Is this common?
Finally, SD segments on HD channels (commercials, etc) sometimes contain fuzzy lines at the top. I can move the image up to hide them, but have to change the positioning again if I switch between HD/SD channels.
Does the TV store screen and picture settings for each input or will it continue to "reset" every time it switches tuners?

Many fixed pixel displays do not overscan the image like CRTs do. I believe it is the CC information that is contained in that noise at the top and it is technically part of the image. Sometimes broadcasters overscan it off the screen when scaling their SD to an HD broadcast format and sometimes they don't.

Any thoughts on how to remove it with the 537H? Adjusting the vertical position every time I switch between HD/SD is cumbersome, but may be the only solution.

Menu -> Screen -> Cropping -> On
That will usually do the trick.

weberman 12-05-06, 10:07 PM Question for someone knowledgeable in the Firmware Update process:
I just attempted to update the firmware on my 537. I followed the instructions and Step 1 went perfectly. Then after powering the TV back up and hitting Step 2 the program tried to erase numerous times and then I get an error message "Flash Failed". I tried to reflash and after a successful Step 1 and Step 2 attempts to complete but I get the same message that Flash failed. During Step 2 there was a line that read "Unknown Flash Type"
However the TV works and the firmware version shows the new version number.
The flash never was able to complete Step 2. If the flash did not complete how am I getting the new version number?
However the TV works and the firmware version shows the new version number.
The only problem I have had after this flash attempt was that after watching TV for a while, all the controls on the remote and the front panel of the TV were not working. I had to pull the plug and restart the TV and the controls work.
Any ideas or suggestions? What am I missing?

You're not doing anything wrong. Either the flash file is bad or something's bad about the TV. I had the same problem with my 542i and finally downloaded an unreleased newer version of the firmware and that updated fine. Somebody in a thread provided the link to the download, it's a Syntax server but don't know if there's anything wrong with that newer "D" version of the firmware that I don't know about...TV's working fine so far anyways.
10 days to never. They've still not gotten back with me on the excessive distortion when the bass is turned up past 60%. This even effects the subwoofer output.
Actually, I just noticed they sent a reply that arrived just before (according to the timestamp) I posted my message.
The tech support guy says it's an error in the manual and it's normal that the audio outputs turn off when the speakers are disabled. I think this defeats the point of disabling the speakers. But, you can turn the volume all the way down and achieve what I want. The TV speakers will not make sounds while the audio outputs are still active.
He mentioned that I should check for firmware updates in the future that might fix the problem.
Olevia 532H - I am looking (like a lot of other people) for the remote code for comcast remote. I have tried all the RCA, LG, Goldstar codes and nothing works in the comcast remote.
Comcast does not have one either.
I have an Olevia 537H and Comcast Motorola DVR. I discovered a way to control the VOLUME using the comcast remote. Normally the volume button on the comcast remote is locked to the TV, however you can unlock the volume so it can be controlled by the cable box. This is a decent workaround since it seems there are no remote codes for the newer Olevias. Anyway, here are the instructions from the comcast guide...
Unlocking All Volume Controls (Global Volume Unlock):
Press and hold SETUP until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
Enter 9- 9- 3 and then press VOL+ once. The mode key will blink four times confirming unlock.
Now, volume controls for all devices can be independently controlled in their own modes.
Anyone know who has the 747i's in stock or whether Olevia has started shipping?
jeffsiler 12-06-06, 03:08 PM Anyone have a Nintendo Wii hooked up via component? On my Olevia 337h there is a lot of aliasing going on. I'm guessing this is because of a 480p signal stretching to 1366x768 (my native resolution).
The bowling pins look horrible in wii sports :)

Penance 12-06-06, 04:04 PM I just picked up a 540i. I read earlier in the thread that this is not technically part of the new Olevia line, but I was hoping someone could help me out.
The OTA HDTV picture I get via antenna is AWESOME. However, when I tried hooking the set up to my receiver to send the audio to my sound system, I couldn't get it to work.
Does this set support audio out when using the DTV input, or am I stuck with the TV's built in speakers?
I tried the optical out jack as well as regular RCA. I also tried disabling the TV's speakers via the OSD with no luck. Is there anything else special I have to do?
Anyone know who has the 747i's in stock or whether Olevia has started shipping?
Dealers are being told that the 747i will be another week to 10 days before it starts shipping.
EricInGA 12-06-06, 10:23 PM What do you do for the TiVo skip forward and backward buttons (+30sec and -10sec if the TiVo is like my DishPVR)? I thought about this remote, but I use the skip buttons *way* too much and it doesn't look like there are any extra buttons on the remote that could be used to learn these two functions?
I've got all the keys I care about, including those 2. Further, I reprogrammed FF to send 3 separate FF commands in rapid succession, to get me up to the highest FF speed with one button press. Now I use this FF most of the time, instead of the 30 sec skip, but I have them both.
The key to saving buttons is to realize that many keys (like the cursor keys) only need to work in a mode sensitive manner. But I stay in SAT mode most of the time, so I mapped some TV buttons to the SAT mode so I can use them without switching modes first.
Remember that every button can be reprogrammed, although they can't all take a macro. I mapped my keys to have a similar layout as TiVo to minimize the learning curve.
One cool aspect is to program a macro into the mode select buttons. If you hold down AMP, it can both select the AMP mode, and also turn it on. Or you can program one of the A-D keys to turn on all of your devices with one button press.
This Sony remote also has greater range than my TiVo remote. But this might be due to it having new batteries.
It also learns faster than any other remote I've used. It only takes a couple button taps to have it learn each key once you're in the learn mode. And it always works right - unlike some "learning" remotes I've used before.
Let me know if you need more info. This is the smartest $25 I've spent in a long time. I'm sure it doesn't have the fine feel of the Harmony, and it doesn't have the web interface, but it's still a steal at this price.
Eric
EricInGA 12-06-06, 10:33 PM The tuner will only go up to channel 125.
That's true, but many cable companies renumber their channels so they aren't using the real FCC channel numbers. For example, channel 700 might really be 74-2.
The dashed numbering is the HD multicast thing, where a single channel number can have more that one channel on it, and the dash tells you which one you want at a given channel number. Most cable companies remap all of the dashed channels to avoid confusing users, and this is how they appear to have so many channels to offer.
So 125 channels isn't such a bad limit after all. But it's true that I'm not able to tune all of the channels I'm authorized to view. And there's no way you can see a premium channel by going directly into the TV.
Eric

True, and unlike what the manual says, you cannot hurt your TV by leaving the speakers enabled while using the audio outs. This is because you're taking this output at the preamp level. The manual was written for the case of using the TV amplifier to power external speakers directly, and having both sets of speakers powered from the same amplifier could hurt the amplifier. But I don't think is even possible on the newer TVs, and none of us would want to do that.

Big Ed,
I'm as anxious as you are to see a production unit....which is why I have pestered Olevia frequently for delivery updates. I'm just sharing what they have been telling me. To their credit, they could have shipped this set earlier with flawed software, but opted not to. They are smart enough to realize that a top-of-the-line premium product really needs to make a good first impression. The delays will be forgiven and forgotten if these babies live up to their potential.
After several tries, finally got a response from Syntax regarding the ship date of the Olevia 747i - came through yesterday and its unfortunately not shipping in the next week...
Due to the huge demand for our Olevia TVs in this season, our production has to focus on our regular LCD TV and delay the 747i production schedule. We have not shipped any unit to our distributor or retailer at this moment. Most likely, you will be able to see it in the store for another month. Thanks.
stephenC 12-07-06, 11:38 AM I have read that the 7xx series uses the HQV chip (great) and the ATI Xilleon chipset (problematic). If this is true, then Syntax may be trying to resolve the 480i input problem discussed in another thread. As Pete mentioned, the 7xx series has to be perfect on launch in all respects. Otherwise, Syntax is going to have a lot of damage control to do.
Xcalibur_255 12-07-06, 12:59 PM There's no need whatsoever for the unit to need both chips. The Realta performs both de-interlacing and scaling and should be the only chipset inside the unit.

I don't know about the 700 series.

The TV does use both chips. The ATI Xilleon chip is the front-end (CPU/GPU and MPEG2 decoding). Depending on which Xilleon chip it is, it is probably also doing the ATSC/QAM decoding. All the back-end image processing (scaling, deinterlacing, noise reduction, etc.) is done by the SiliconOptix Realta HQV.
stephenC 12-08-06, 10:43 AM Derek - Do you have any links for your information? I couldn't find my references and didn't want to argue without some proof. A few block diagrams would be great. The MPEG2 decoding is what concerns me. That function may be the root of the ghosting issues with 480i inputs. Still, I have nothing to reference.
badself 12-08-06, 08:28 PM The 747i with the Realta processor attracted me almost from the onset of its announcement, and I'm still interested in purchasintg the set once it becomes more available.
For the interim, I purchased a 542i from Microcenter on Black Friday for [EDIT]out the door with all incentives. The set is worth that much, but I have minimal to moderate backlight clouding, as most purchasers of these sets have experienced. Mine is evenly scattered, but I know it's there.
The Sony 1080p clouding thread is now 37 pages long, and a lot of those sets look pretty darn bad.
Realta, or no Realta, if the LG glass on the 742i exhibits even minimal clouding like mine (the 47 panel may be devoid of the problem, I doubt it), owners of these expensive sets may be in the same position as owners of the expensive Sony's.
I'm still debating whether to accept the problem on a set costing less than $800. A comparable Sony S2000 is nearly $2k, and these sets have no clouding issues, but are too close to the cost of a 1080p set.
I sincerely hope the 7 series sets are free of clouding, I guess we'll know soon enough.
Does the 5xx series (532H specifically) display psip info?
The "Guide" button on my remote doesn't do anything. But, pressing "display" will show the current channel name, program name, and program description for channels the transmit it.
I got a DVI to HDMI cable today and connected my computer to my 532H. There is a problem displaying one pixel wide vertical single color lines. White lines will show up correctly anywhere on the screen, but colored ones only show up in color in every other pixel column. In the alternate columns, they'll be some shade of gray. Horizontal lines show up fine except for the first or last pixel.
I discovered the problem using a monitor test pattern. The attach picture shows a cut out from a picture of the TV showing a red test pattern. Notice that some of the vertical lines appear gray and parts of red arcs are gray.
I can also see the problem using paintbrush. If I draw vertical lines, I can move the window horizontally and the line will change from colored to gray and back as I move it.
This happens in all resolutions and aspect ratio settings. It does not happen with the VGA input.
Any ideas about what's going on? Which is broken, my TV, my video card, or my DVI-HDMI cable? I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600.
Jim Hef 12-09-06, 09:49 AM Just a thought here, but there are differences between DVI-I and DVI-D, and possibly your cable isn't "speaking" properly to the panel from the video card. Do you know the specs of that card, and whether you have the proper connector?
phipp01 12-10-06, 01:32 PM Was just wondering what people are using to clean the screens on the tv.

gpflepsen 12-10-06, 02:37 PM Was just wondering what people are using to clean the screens on the tv.
I was thinking of trying the Monster cleaner but I hate to put money into their pockets. Any suggestions?
From Syntax-Olevia group
Q: What do you recommend to clean an Olevia TV?
A: There are many new cleaning products on the market designed especially for LCD Displays. We recommend using a soft, lint free cloth and a cleaner that contains any of the following:
* Water
* Vinegar (mixed with water)
* Isopropyl Alcohol
* Windex mixed with water
Do not use cleaners that contain any of the following agents:
* Acetone
* Ethyl Alcohol
* Ethyl Acid
* Ammonia
* Methyl Chloride
Important:
Do not spray any liquids on the LCD screen directly. Always apply the solution to your cloth first, not directly to the parts you are cleaning. Always use a soft cotton cloth. Some materials, such as paper towels or old rags could cause scratches and damage the LCD screen.

I Know I Know!!!! It's an airplane. :D
No seriously it's Olevia's top of the line LCD. Availibility is unknown at this time. :(

amarksp 12-11-06, 01:18 AM Ok, have a few questions for you experts.
Here is my setup:
a) Olevia 537H
b) Time Warner Digital Cable (not HD)
c) Motorola DCT6200 High-Definition Cable Receiver
http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/dct6200/downloads/DCT6200_User_Guide.pdf
d) Philips DVD Player with HDMI (DVP5960)
e) Sony A/V receiver with Energy Speakers
______________________________
1) Still have not figured out how to do Cable auto channel setup so that the 537H Tuner is functioning. Can view Cable channels via Component 1 source but not via Tuner source. What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of using Tuner source vs. Component 1 source? How exactly do I go about getting the Tuner source to function with Time Warner? What are the exact cable connections, RF bypass options?, cable box menu setup to get the Tuner source to function and thus get the auto cable channel setup to function...
2) Can anyone recommend a cheap learning remote for the 537H. For example, has anyone tried the Sony RM-VL710 or similar cheap remote so I can use a single remote for all equipment. Please advise any learning remote that works well with Olevia TV, Time Warner Motorola Cable Box, DVD Player, and A/V Receiver.
http://www.remotecentral.com/vl710/index.html
3) Has anyone tried using the monoprice.com 2X1 Manual HDMI Switch? If so, does this switch work ok without degrading picture, etc. This appears to be a viable means to work around the 1 HDMI port on the 537H? Please advise.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions!
redgtconv 12-11-06, 03:13 AM I was going to do my first download tonight. I had a usb cable which I use to connect my computer to my digital camera, and I have a usb cable which connects my computer to my gps. Derek_HTPC 12-11-06, 04:50 AM Derek - Do you have any links for your information? I couldn't find my references and didn't want to argue without some proof. A few block diagrams would be great. The MPEG2 decoding is what concerns me. That function may be the root of the ghosting issues with 480i inputs. Still, I have nothing to reference.
I am not sure what you mean by "ghosting", since that word typically refers to analog NTSC multipath signal artifacts and is affected primarily by the tuner quality (i.e. unrelated to MPEG2 decoding or to the 480i component inputs).
The Realta only does post-processing, so other chip(s) are needed for CPU, GPU, tuning and MPEG2 decode. The first bullet in the 7-series press release says that the front-end chip is the Xilleon:

Also note the ATI logo in the bottom corner of the 747i brochure:

My video card is a Radeon 9600 128 MB (325 MHz core, 400 MHz memory) with 1 VGA connector and 1 DVI connector.
The DVI-HDMI cable has a DVI-D single link connector on the DVI end.
I did some more experimenting today. The 532H picture quality thread mentioned a new firmware. So, I downloaded it and installed it. The vertical line problem is still present. (The audio out shutting off with the speaker problem is also not fixed.)
I connected my 17 inch LCD via a DVI-D single link cable and the display is fine. So, it appears the video card is ok.
Has anyone sucessfully used a HDMI-DVI cable to connect their computer? The vertical line problem only shows up with color single pixel wide segments. So, it's really hard to see the problem using a video source.

Those are mini USB plugs what you need is a regular USB plug. I ran into the same problem and luckily found a regular USB cable in a drawer. :)
Heres a link http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&style=. That should be what you need.

Primestar31 12-12-06, 08:10 AM My 537H is definately pushing yellow.
My "Yellow push" issue has been SOLVED by downloading, and installing firmware B11_060831D. It seems to have completely RESET what I was supposed to get with "factory calibration", which wasn't right from the time I unboxed it. I then used AVIA to attempt to tweak it further, and it was so dead on after the new Bios flash, very little tweaking I did made any difference.
This also cured an issue I had with the tv defaulting to "CHURCH" mode, and causing the sound to horribly echo, when turned ON after being off for any length of time. That was very annoying, as I couldn't train the wife to turn that off herself, and she was on a rampage about it. It also cured the calendar problem.
So, if strange things are happening to YOU, try a new firmware, and see what happens!

Thanks, Derek. There is a thread in this forum related to the 480i input problem, I think snowmoon started it. There are posts related the ATI chipset. These problems if they are also exhibited on the 7xx series may be the reason for the delays in availability. The other thread is specifically related to the 537 model.
Primestar31 12-12-06, 12:20 PM 537H tv.
Oh yeah, almost forgot: Can anybody tell me why certain video (I think it's 480i stuff) can make it look like the walls of a house in a picture are "pulsing" (for lack of a better word). For instance, using a VHS recorder, playing back through Composite 1, on certain scenes on the videos I watch, it looks like the walls of a house are "waving"/pulsing. Kinda hard to explain, and I don't yet know what all instances cause it, but I've also seen it happen on the HDMI connection, which is receiving input from a MOXI dvr. It's kind of annoying, and I'd like to figure out what it is, so I can see if there's a fix for it. Perhaps this is the "ghosting" you are talking about, but it doesn't happen to the entire scene, just to stuff on the sides, such as walls like I've mentioned.
Jim Hef 12-12-06, 12:54 PM Never having hooked my VHS player to this panel, I couldn't tell for certain, but I believe what you are probably seeing is the gymnastics the scaler is going through to try to display a low resolution analog interlaced picture onto a high resolution progressive display.
amarksp 12-12-06, 01:29 PM As a general audio question, is it best to control the volume via the Olevia TV volume control or via the Cable Box volume control? That is, which remote is best to use to increase volume and why, or does it make any difference? Please advise/comment on the issues here.
I own the Olevia 537H.
As another general audio question for those with Time Warner or Comcast menu box setup, which settings are best to use for Audio Setup:
1) TV Speakers
2) Stereo
3) Stereo: Advanced (which compression heavy, light, none?--Matrix/Stereo?)
Could someone please advise the issues here. Will primarily use TV speakers for most TV viewing but like to change to A/V Receiver speakers for football games. Do these cable box audio setup options make any difference?
gpflepsen 12-12-06, 04:48 PM The "Guide" button on my remote doesn't do anything. But, pressing "display" will show the current channel name, program name, and program description for channels the transmit it.
I installed my 532H yesterday, and it displays program info. The only way it can be getting to the set is via psip from the broadcasters. So I would say it does utilize psip.
daveWVU 12-12-06, 05:18 PM Hi, I have a 542i that I bought on BF. I finally had a chance to hook up a new cable box. Well it worked fine until I swapped it out to a HD DVR. Specificially the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD with Cox service here in Fairfax, VA.
The first box I hooked up was a regular digital box. I used S-Video and the picture was ok. With the HD box I hooked it up using component cables (the 5 cable thing). I have no reds and there's a loud buzzing that seems to roughly correspond to the amount of white on the screen. I then hookup the box using composite (3 cables) and s-video. The box worked fine.
I decided to take it back anyways and get one that works. Well the new box does the same thing. Any suggestions???? I called Cox and they want to send someone out but I'm never home when they they have slots open
The component hook up works fine with my PS2 set to 480p 16:9. The cable box does it no matter what the setting: 480i,p, 720p, 1080i.
Please help!!!

Did you double check the component cables when they are hooked to the box to make sure you do not have the Red audio cable hooked up where hte red video cable should be?
I am nto saying you are dumb, I have just had to double check myself when I have all five cables flopping around.

According to reliable sources, the delays on the 7 series were first related to a gray scale problem that required a firmware mod. The current delay is due to the re-assignment of production capacity to re-supplying 5-Series and 3-Series pipelines which were completely drained on Black Friday. Mass merchants come first; then videophiles.

I have my 542i hooked up with a dvi to hdmi cable. I haven't had a chance to try the line of pixels to see if they turn gray or not yet.
One thing I have noticed is that some dvd's and other video files will only play in black and white over the dvi to hdmi cable. If I switch to a vga cable, it plays in color just fine. Anyone else have this problem?
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what version of HDMI will the 7 series have when it comes out?
Xcalibur_255 12-15-06, 12:27 PM Probably 1.1. It doesn't need 1.3 and wouldn't benefit from any of it's additional features.
At this point they might as well hold the models over until next year. That way they can launch them with the newer version of this panel with expanded color gamut and integrate a Micronas TruD HD processor as well. That would actually justify the unit's price.
chuckdaddy 12-18-06, 01:17 PM So that means using a calibration DVD would only calibrate the tv for my DVD player (connected by component cables). I'd have to re-apply those settings for any non-component input by copying the settings I used for my component input.
I guess that's why my dvds look better sometimes compared to some HD programming.

Copying the settings won't give you the same results unless the input signal you're copying to has the same qualities as the DVD input signal you calibrated with originally. But it would probably be a good starting point, then maybe fine tune by eye.
redgtconv 12-19-06, 10:44 AM Vizio announced that it will be introducing a 47" 1080p lcd tv in January and it will cost under 2k. Looks like this will beat Olevia's introduction and at 1/2 the price.

Sounds good for me. I only watch hd lite or better, and improved motion is what I care about.
But, what about those that watch a lot of SD. truD's not the answer. SO's Realta HQV should be the best VP for enhancing digital SD.
Re "That would actually justify the unit's price." Silicon Optix stated that Realta’s HQV technology matches, and in many cases exceeds, the industry leading video processing seen in the $60k Teranex 3RU Xantus system.
I do not know of any "high priced" systems that include truD and I've read several post from people who did not like what truD does. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Re high end VPs in HDTVs, here's a 9/18/06 quote from Westa6969 re HQV (a bit out of context, but you'll get the point):
"Excuse me but why don't you post the PRICE of the HQV - you suggest it as if it's a freebie or something when for god's sake as a standalone it costs thousands. Perhaps if they were selling as a $20K Fujitsu but a 52" will street for $4K without this high end Video Processor. Nice Pipe Dream though. Are you going to pay the extra $2K or more on top of what the panel already sells for?
Why would you throw something out into the mix when you know it's a third party processor that add's thousands to the cost of the panel? Agree that all TV's could benefit from it as I have a pre-order on a DVDO VP50 myself but understand this market has been created to take the viewing experience to the next level otherwise the VP market would not exist - even if you buy an NEC Plasma you have to budget around $3K for that NEC Theatersync to take it to the next level.
Here's a link to products using it and the Lumagen MSRP $5999 without a TV."
xythian04 12-19-06, 09:26 PM Greetings All,
Do any other Wii + 537H owners notice a black border encasing the viewable game space? When I had firmware B, the black border was approximately 1/4" but with firmware D it's close to 1/2".
I've set my Wii up for 16:9 and 480p (I have component cables). The 537H is setup for full screen, but it still displays the border.
Any thoughts?

I have had the 537H for two weeks now. I have been very happy with it so far. I have noticed one thing that I am a little concerned about and wanted your feedback. I noticed when I am watching SD TV at night, in the middle of the picture there is a white bar that goes across the screen. Not the entire screen but only the width of the picture. It is not very bright but I can see it. Is this caused by the way the picture is filmed, an issue with the signal from the cable company or an indication of a bigger problem that I should call Olevia about. I have not noticed it in 720 or 1080i HD.
I have the same problem with some analog channels (USA, A&E, AMC, TNT etc) when i connect cable line directly to the TV.
Do any other 537H owners have the same problem? Any resolution to this problem?

Does it scroll from top to bottom? It sounds like a ground issue if so. I have a similar issue on my plasma and it only occurs when my caleb box is connected.

I have this problem with my 542i, only on some SD stations. other stations and inputs are fine. It does not vary in height, but it's brightness varies. It's size is always the same. It's position in the picture doesn't change, but it's not in the same position on the different stations.
I'm on Cox cable running straight into the TV without a cable box. And I'm using the latest firmware--actually on the unreleased yet "D" version, I'm thinking about going back to an older version to test.

No, the white bar does not scroll top to bottom or bottom to top, it stays at the same place only appear or disappear. I have checked all my channels, there is one channel (WGBO, a Spanish channel which I don't watch), which does have 2 white bars moving from bottom to top even when I connect my cable box to the TV.

The white bar is on different position:
Exactly the middle on USA (the worst)
1/3 - 1/4 from the bottom on TNT
4/9 from the top on A&E
I haven't upgraded my firmware yet (537-B11-060608B).
It looks to me that the firmware upgrades only fix problems with control and/or configuration of the TV.
Ra Power 12-22-06, 02:06 AM Now they are saying that the 747i will not be available until early January.
Well I for one, am tired of waiting. Besides, I'm disappointed with Syntax on this one. My first LCDTV is a Syntax and I'm happy with it. However, their business model was a sound one when they decided to take the market by storm and release LCD's "for the masses" and looking at the projected prices of the 7 Series sets has me questioning where they're going. I truly hope they're not trying to become a "boutique brand" with the advent of these new sets, but it looks like that's what they're doing. I don't care what processor it has in it, I'm not paying at least several hundred more for ANY Syntax set when I can get a comparable Sony for much less.

To Vizio's credit, what I've observed of their panels is more uniform backlighting as compared to Sony, Samsung, and Olevia.
Obvious conjecture, but I think the only possible gotcha with the 7 series will be the LG panels themselves, that in my experience fall short on backlight uniformity, greyscale, and dynamic contrast. The Realta, as exceptional a processor as it will be, can not compansate for any innate deficiencies attributable to the panel.

I know you don't have the time to wait to rent this, but as mentined in other threads, this can be rented from Netflix and Hollywood . I had to wait for 2-3 weeks for AVE, and I'm at 4 weeks and waiting for Avia....
I'm at eight weeks for Avia, As long as you keep paying your monthly dues, you can for all intensive purposes own the DVD as there is unlimited time to use it.
I may never see the thing. I do have AVE, but haven't used it yet, I probably should give up on the AVIA and get with the AVE

I think those files and DVDs are PAL and that is why they show up black and white. I think that your DVD player doesn't convert PAL to NTSC. If you are using a PC to play these files. You should look at the settings in your DVD player software to output everything in NTSC.
If you are using a standalone DVD player. Make sure that its output is set to NTSC instead of AUTO so that it will convert PAL to NTSC. If your DVD player wont convert PAL to NTSC, then you'll need to buy a DVD player that does.

I'm having a fun time trying to get past Step 2. It keeps freaking out and not completing. Step 1 works fine. But Step 2 keeps getting a firmware unknown and doesn't finish. Step 1 works like a charm though.
It seems Step 2 is taking place because the front panel buttons cease to function while its updating. It requires a complete power off to restore function of the TV.

Buckeyefan 01-01-07, 04:59 PM So I was in HHGregg today, checking out their "family pricing" sale, and noticed they have no more 537H sets left. The rep said the 437V is replacing the 537H. It's got the same guts, but comes with a different warranty, the speakers are on the sides, and it's silver. Plus, the remote is not universal.
Is this true? The Olevia website doesn't show the 437V until you click on "other models." I'm just a little peeved that my 537H could be outdated, and it hasn't been out that long.

David
They may be carrying the 437 instead of the 537, but it is not a replacement. I believe the 437 line was originally created for the Costco, Sams Club type stores as a slightly modified and in different color version.
And thinking about it, I'm not sure I know a single manufacturer that decrements the model number on the newer/better version.
Buckeyefan 01-01-07, 10:54 PM The rep at the store said Olevia is discontinuing the 537H, and pushing the 437V. Whether I believe him or not, they are a big carrier of Olevia here and I've purchased three units over the past few years. I don't think the 437V is an upgraded model, especially due to the inferior remote and different warranty, but will say the 437V looks a little better with the side mounted speaekers. I hate the silver color FWIW.

Competition gets tough this time of year. They will have to cut costs and move the price down. Newer and cheaper does not always mean better.

stephenC 01-02-07, 12:04 PM Thanks for the link to the 747i review. I'm a little disappointed. I've been thinking of buying the 747i for my bedroom, but now I'm reading about the new Vizio 47" 1080p set. The price differential between the two is significant. I'm not really sure if I need to spend the money on a bedroom TV with HQV processing.

A good point. No need to waste money on/if:
(1) On 1080p unless for a PC
(2) On 1080 native res unless you will sit close enough
(3) On Realta HQV unless you will be watching digital SD, DVDs or HD lite.
(Note the contradiction between "close enough for 1080 and watching SD on it. Imagine sitting close and watching SD without HQV!)
So, sit close and watching BR/HD-DVD on any 1080 TV.
Or, watch DVDs and HD lite with HQV. (And some SD.)
(Bedroom -> night time and TV at 10' -> 720 plasma ,< $$$.

I have a new study. I had a TV mounted on a wall mounted swivel, but relocated it to a bedroom prior to the holidays for guests. So, now I am now in the market for a new TV, since I don't want to un-install it. Seems that now my computer monitor is also having some issues, which presents a new wrinkle.
Hence, I am considering killing 2 birds with one stone.
What are the pro/cons of having a flat screen (LCD) HDTV on my desk with PIP, that can do double duty as my computer monitor?
I am looking at 26" or 27" models, with 1600:1 contrast ratio and 1280x768 resolution as a minimum, but possibly better. I am seeing some available for $450. I purchased one at Walmart, but it did not have a PC or DVI compatable interface, so I took it back before ever turning it on.
I think I need more information before I try it again.
Thanks in advance,
redgtconv 01-05-07, 11:59 PM So I was in HHGregg today, checking out their "family pricing" sale, and noticed they have no more 537H sets left.
That's odd because I am awaiting a new 537H from Olevia to replace the one I purchased over Thanksgiving. The reason for the delay is that they completely sold out of every 537H that they had in inventory and they were awaiting the production of a new batch. Sounds to me like the sales rep was pushing the other model because he couldn't get any more 537H models anytime soon.

I had a 30" Olevia that I used for 2 years as a computer monitor as well as TV (using Windows Media Center). It was 1280x768 (over DVI) and was quite reasonable as a computer display, though sometimes the low resolution was a bit cramped. It was 49.8 dpi, so I sat a bit back from it (2-3 feet, but I actually like being a bit further back). Most computer monitors are between 80-100 dpi and are viewed from 1.5-2 feet. If you need more resolution, I would suggest a 37 or 40 inch 1920x1080 display (59.6 or 55.1 dpi). I saw news recently that a 32 inch 1920x1080 display (68.8 dpi) was imminent from a major manufacturer (Sharp?) but it may be Japan-only. Another option would be to get a 24 or 26 inch PC monitor (1920x1200 at 91.8 or 84.7 dpi, note that you get black bars with 16:9 content due to the extra vertical resolution), but these are significantly more expensive for their size and you need to make sure they accept DVI-HDCP or HDMI.

My 542 tings when it starts up too. It started about 2 weeks after I bought it. now the tinking sound last for about 10-15 minutes after I start it up. Plus there is a zap(snapping) sound that comes out of my speakers too every time I start it up. Does anyone know why this is?? Or how to get rid of it?

I don't get tinking sounds but I get a snapping sound when I turn of the TV from my external speakers connected via the headphone jack. I don't know if I get this on the RCA outputs.

That tinging sound you describe is caused by the expasion and contraction of parts as they heat up and cool down. This is very common among all manufacturers of lcd tv's.

My 537H does this also at first time of turn on, and I've noticed it's louder, the colder the set is before turn on. I keep my house set at 63 degrees at night, (cold michigan) and in the morning, the tv tings louder for a second or so when turned on. I agree it's just expansion of parts, and shouldn't cause a problem. I wouldn't suggest turning this on when it was at say a freezing temp unless it was warmed up first, or you might find out what the "popcorn" effect is! But then, a lot of other electronic devices are the same way.

Then why doens't my 20" Olevia which I've had for two years ting? It's really loud on the 537H model. My parents and brother have the LT37HVS model and it doesn't ting one bit. The other things I've noticed that the LT37HVS lack compared to the 537H are the "snow" lines above the picture on some channels, and the distorted bass output when you take the bass control past 50% on the 537H. It seems Olevia went down hill with the 537H compared to the LT37HVS model. The LT37HVS also has dual tuners, which allow easy side by side picture. The 537H doesn't allow HD on one side and SD on the other. One bonus with the 537H though, is the subwoofer output. The LT37HVS doesn't have one. I wish they would have allowed two coax inputs on these sets for OTA as well as cable inputs.

Huh? I use my 537H all the time, (just got it at Thanksgiving, and it's flashed to the latest Bios) and watch HD and SD side by side every day. There's something wrong with the way yours is set up. or you need to adjust what devices are on what inputs.
I have Component 1 going to a Dish 6000 putting out HD on that connection, and my Charter Moxi dvr on the HDMI connection putting out HD and SD (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i it's set to pass through whatever the channel is "pushing")., Component 2 is a dvd player, set to 480p. Coax in is a split connection from cable, Composite 1 and 2 go to separate VCR's (SD), and S-video1 goes to an FTA receiver (SD) S-video 2 goes to an SD output on the Dish 6000, which I can set to this mode, so I can record to vcr. I can watch nearly any combination of these whether they are showing HD or SD with PIP, and switch them around at will!

PDonthate 01-13-07, 05:06 PM Hey everyone -
Having a little issue that I was hoping someone can clear up;
I've had the 532H for the past three weeks and have been using it for gaming and cable HD with no problems.
My main display for my living room is being delivered tomorrow, and the Olevia is going to be used for bedroom duty now. Because I don't have a cable box in the bedroom, I decided to try an over the air HD antenna.
Olevias main page description of the 532H says "ATSC/NTSC tuner", so I figured I could just plug the antenna directly in to it.
Now that I opened up the PDF instruction manual, I see in there it only mentions NTSC.
Can anyone confirm that the TV does not have a built in HD tuner?
When I do the channel scan, it finds all the digital ".1 and .2" channels and assigns them channel slots that I can go to. But when I do go to them, it just shows a black screen and a message that says "No signal" or something.
I've never attempted to use an HD antenna, so I don't know if it's something I am doing wrong, or if there is a setting I am missing, etc..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
P

On the 532H, there's a "-" button to the left of the "0" that does it.

Thanks. The original remote had a very limited angle below the plane of the remote where it would operate. Being the bedroom TV, you could imagine the angle at which it usually gets used. Many keystrokes would be missed or act like they did nothing. I grabbed a programmable and never programmed the "-" button, but now I have :). Thanks Mike, and to the poster above, for the info.

As long as the external device has a tuner, you're ok. I'm having trouble watching OTA channels on one side, and HD through component 1 on the other side. Do you have an OTA antenna outside where you pick up local stations in HD/SD?

At present, I do not have an OTA antenna hooked up, just a split connection from cable, coming from a vcr to keep that for recording my wife's soaps.
Hummmmm, you are right, if I'm watching something on the tv's "main tuner", the only other input I can select for split-screen is HDMI. I have used it in every mode except that one, as for me, using the built-in tv tuner itself is fairly rare. Almost all my viewing is on one of the other inputs, and most of those freely interchange at will. I guess I'll have to concede this one to you! I wonder why they would build in that limitation?

Have you contacted Olevia, or your dealer about the problem? That's unusual. I only get 3-5 tings when the power is hit.
Hopefully this isn't a mfg. wide issue. It could bankrupt the company (assuming the units break within the warranty period).
ceprise 01-18-07, 09:58 PM I need help with the flash bios update. I have an Olevia 226V-S11.

I had the same problem.
Syntax would make the process easier if they included the instruction to unzip the file to the formatted USB memory drive. You should have the files viewable on the top-most level of the memory drive, not contained in any folder. If you look at USB key in explorer you should see the unzipped files and not a folder with the files inside that.

The Olevia 226V-S11 still won't recognize the USB drive. I deleted the former files from the USB drive, and unzipped the download to the USB drive. I turned off the 226V, plugged in the USB drive, and turned on the set. The USB drive's LED glowed to show power. The 226V then did not recognize the drive and booted to the tuner and showed a channel.

No, sorry. My set is a 532H. I had to have the files only on the drive; no folders at all.
bennynihon 01-19-07, 09:51 PM I'm just curious how Olevia expects to sell the over-priced 747i? I admit that I have been a huge fanboy of the set, ever since it was announced early 2006. But I've got to admit now that this set is doomed.
The casual consumer will not justify spending extra money on a relatively unknown company, when they can get a 46" 1080p Sony for $2K less (and lets not forget that Sony is extremely expensive to begin with). If the consumer were really OK with a no-name brand, there's 47" 1080p alternatives for less than a third of the cost.
So it would really only be the videophile types that frequent these forums that would splurge and get the Olevia 747i HDTV. But given the less than stellar findings in this review (http://www.ultimateavmag.com/flatpaneldisplays/1206olevia/), I'm left believing that the major justification for the huge disparity in price versus other sets, the Realta HQV processor, really isn't all that special. I know it's only one review, but how is that his findings on SD quality with this set are anything but the best SD quality he's every seen on an LCD TV? I mean, that's why I'd be tempted to make the plunge on this set, because it's supposed to have the best deinterlacer, the best scaler, best denoiser, best video processor you can get in the consumer market. So the fact that the PQ on this set was observed as being anything but stellar, not to mention simply medicore, really spells doomsday for this TV. Sorry Olevia, looks like it's back to the drawing board for you guys.

I didn't see the quote you mentioned, maybe I missed something, the part I saw is "Mediocre program material, which includes much of today's standard definition, analog cable offerings, looked okay on the Olevia. The set didn't work miracles with such material, but most of it was at least tolerable. Nevertheless, as you get more accustomed to HDTV and even the best DVDs on this set, you'll definitely find yourself less drawn to TV Land reruns of Green Acres and Gilligan's Island."
And the rest of the review was generally positive. It's criticisms about viewing angle and black levels were qualified by saying they were limitations of LCD technology and "And shadow detail remains marginal at best. The Olevia is a little worse in this respect than the two most recent high-end LCD displays I have reviewed, the Sony BRAVIA KDL-46XBR2 and the JVC LT-46FN97, but it's in the same ballpark."
It's above average weight and list price could hurt sales, but we'll have to see how the street price lands after the set is out for a couple of months.
wtr_wkr 01-20-07, 02:22 PM If you've been waiting for the 7xx series, it should have been for it's HQV, not it's panel. Do not expect it to look like plasma, LED LCD, SED, 5 wavelength BLU,... LG panels are simply not that good. HQV is not for motion adaptation either.
So what is HQV good for? Making good, digital SD into HD-lite.
From the article: "Even standard definition DVD looks beautiful on this set. Jurassic Park III has always been a great video transfer, the best looking of the Jurassic Park series. It also has many scenes of bright green foliage that can be tough on digital displays. The Olevia did a great job keeping those greens realistic. It also handled the rest of the transfer with ease, edging very close to the look of a high-definition source in depth, detail, and color. "
How does it do it:
"The most basic video processors perform their scaling calculations by analyzing no more than four pixels in the source image to create one pixel in the final image. This represents what is called a 4-tap scaler. (Without getting too technical, the number of "taps" determines the number of pixels that are analyzed.) With all other things being equal, a larger number of taps will result in better scaling quality. The average scaler uses no more than 16 taps. However, even this level of scaling can still produce blurry images."
"HQV processing uses a scaler with an unprecedented 1024 taps. This level of quality reflects the fact that HQV processing has its roots in Teranex algorithms, which were developed for defense and military image analysis. For every pixel, the HQV processor evaluates the surrounding 1024 pixels in order to provide the best image quality when scaling the image up from standard definition. Again, when this advanced upsampling technology is combined with HQV Detail Enhancement, standard-definition broadcast TV and DVD can be enjoyed with near-HD quality."
wtr_wkr 01-20-07, 02:26 PM ...review...
The short answer - HQV is for upscaling digital SD.
The review re DVDs: "...edging very close to the look of a high-definition source in depth, detail, and color."
The picture I witnessed from a 747i on display in the TAG booth at CEDIA was really, really good. As far as pricing...I don't think it will be out of line with 1st Tier 1080p competitors..not when you factor in the Realta processing, the dual combo tuners (2 ATSC and 2 NTSC), multiple HDMI inputs, RS232, and hefty build quality. Keep in mind that this is a limited edition series...not being mass produced for internet resellers and big box stores. It will be sold to custom installers who will be specifying them into affluent homes and integrating them with sophisticated control and audio systems. If they cost a hundred or two more than a Sony or Pioneer, no one's going to notice. If the price needs to be adjusted, Olevia has demonstrated with 5 and 3-Series product that they know how to stay competitive.
badself 01-20-07, 06:21 PM I'm just curious how Olevia expects to sell the over-priced 747i? I admit that I have been a huge fanboy of the set, ever since it was announced early 2006. But I've got to admit now that this set is doomed.

Sorry Olevia, looks like it's back to the drawing board for you guys.
If anything dooms this set, it's not the Realta, it's the LG panel onto which it displays.
After owning two 542i in a month's time, I learned through experience that this family of panels struggles with blacks, and the brand itself has problems with reliability, backlight uniformity, and lack of numeration for its menu settings. I could go on.
BTW, how are we defining "hefty build quality" in relation to Olevia and a model still largely unseen?
Tried hooking up my DVD player with component hookups on 532H - audio is fine, but picture is pink and green.
Any thoughts?
Cables are new, and are hooked up directly from DVD to TV.
Checked all the connections and the wires are hooked into proper terminals.
Thought someone might have a couple of ideas of what to check.
Thanks!
Any other suggestions?
Is it formatted FAT16 or FAT32? There was a readme in the firmware for my 532H that said it would only work with one of the types. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which it is right now.
gpflepsen 01-21-07, 02:56 PM Regarding the F/W update... I'd double check that the version is indeed intended for your model and that the F/W version is not the same as the one already in the TV. Kind of the obvious stuff but sometimes that is overlooked.

Check the connections again. That's a classic error in putting the red into the audio rca instead of the component rca.
etphonehome2005 01-21-07, 11:10 PM The picture I witnessed from a 747i on display in the TAG booth at CEDIA was really, really good.
I know the set looks good on paper, but when did Syntax become 1st Tier?? Did I miss something? They haven't earned their stripes yet to be considered 1st Tier, or atleast that is not the public perception. I have always liked their sets, but lets face it, they don't have the reputation yet to be charging first tier prices IMHO. Market a set that has a lot of bang for the buck. A sharp, samsung, and sony killer for less money. Thats what their market share truly is at this point. Earn the reputation to be first Tier. But first things first....get this thing to market already!
elgibby 01-22-07, 12:14 PM Last night my 3-month-old Olevia 537H LCD suddenly developed a geometry problem.
The top couple of inches of the screen bend to the right -- a straight vertical line looks like it's bending from 12 to 2 toward the top. This is only visible in SD, and in all aspect settings. HD looks OK.
I did nothing, tweaked nothing, changed no settings.
I thought only CRTs had this kind of geometry issue.
Any idea what's going on?
(I can take and post a photo when I get home tonight if that would be helpful).

wtr_wkr 01-22-07, 02:04 PM ..., but when did Syntax become 1st Tier??...
Yup. Even if the 7xx is better than Sony's, Sharp's,... best, that would not make them 1st tier. That "brand category" requires years of offering top end lines and market share.
Offering second rate glass with first rate VPs will not get them there. Having said that, offering a second rate TV that's very good with SD has merit.
Re price, no worries. The market will take care of that.
For me, I'll be skinning different cats. (Cleo hates it when I say that.) I'll get a new HDTV with Micronas' truD HD doing 120Hz and for SD, getting HQV in a BR/HD-DVD player. (A future receiver or external VP are also options.)

I didn't say it was 1st Tier. What I meant to convey was that 7-series pricing...given content/performance...was not out of line with what other manufactures (widely regarded as 1st Tier) happen to be charging. I do believe that 7-Series can stand head-to-head with (and in some respect outperform) products from 1st-Tier manufactures and that, therefore, they have some equivalency to a 1st-Tier vendor. I'm not claiming this for all of Olevia...just 7-series.
Re-checked the connections - cables are in the video terminals.
Is this most likely the cables are bad or a problem with the TV?
Thanks.

Maybe it would be prudent to actually own the set for a bit before claiming tier-1 status to the 747i, particularly with regard to blacks.

Check the DVD player's setup menu to see if there is an option where you can specify the output signal for video.

My set does this on one dvd player, but not the other. I notice it when the kids are watching their dvd's. It goes into component 1. The other DVD-RW that I have plugged into composite 1 doesn't do it. I thought it was the DVD player. :(

UPDATE: I swapped sources and inputs and the problem appears only with the Moxi, and only when the Moxi is outputting an SD program.
OTA SD is fine, a progressive scan DVD recorder is ok on both live and recorded programming, and DVD,
I've got a couple of other things to try, including swapping the component cable, but it looks like a Moxi SD problem.
Also I haven't done what I shld have tried first (and what Charter will tell me to do): power down the box and reboot.
Check the DVD player's setup menu to see if there is an option where you can specify the output signal for video.
Yeah!
That worked!
Thanks alot!

Which TV and DVD player are you looking at? When will they come out? I have been waiting to buy some new gear, and every time I think I know what I want, something new comes out with better features.

And, I'll be doing dual use with PC. So, 1:1 pixel mapping is required.
Currently, Sharp's D92 is my front runner. I figure a month or two for the process and price to be right. Although ~5 LCD manuf's will offer Micronas' truD HD, it's important to get good color, contrast, response time,... glass.
For me, BD/HD-DVD is a bit early. HQV is in Tosh's HD XA2 and Samsung's new BD1200.
wtr_wkr 01-26-07, 01:48 PM ...and for SD, getting HQV in a BR/HD-DVD player. (A future receiver or external VP are also options.)
Note, I'm not very interested in up converting SD other than DVDs, so HQV in a player works for me. (I have a 14" tube that is perfect for SD from 8'.)
For others, HQV for good digital SD signals should be of value. It should also be good for HD lite. Good without motion. Nothing will fix macro blocking due to over compression, which occurs during motion.
mikekingaa 01-26-07, 03:09 PM I have the Olevia 432V hooked to a Motorola DCT 3412-I HD DVR box via HDMI. Sometimes I see "No Signal" or "Invalid Format" in the bottom left corner of the screen, even though the picture/sound seem fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I've figured out that this sequence of steps causes the problem to happen 100%:
- Power on the cable box
- Power on the TV
- Wait for "HDMI" to disappear from the screen
- Adjust the volume slightly
- Wait for the volume bar to time out
- Either "No Signal" or "Invalid Format" will appear in the bottom left and won't go away
This didn't happen when I was hooked up via component cables, although I need to use the component input for my DVD player. Also I tried using a different HDMI cable but it didn't make a difference. I've installed the latest firmware.
Any ideas? I've contacted Olevia support and they said they are "looking into it" but nothing definitive. I'm curious if anyone else has this problem or if my set or DVR might be defective.
Thanks in advance.
Mike

Turn the TV on FIRST, then the cable box.
The cable box is looking for the tv's response to a copy protection query but the TV doesn't "boot" up as fast as your cable box.
For those of you who, like me, have been eagerly awaiting the 747i, I called Olevia today and was informed that they have finally started shipping. Now I just have to find a dealer that's going to display it and not just fast-track it into a project.

weberman 01-27-07, 03:25 PM The main point for that model is:
Built-in TV tuner (PAL) and not ATSC built in
Not U.S. compatible.
That model is a product of Olevia Hong Kong
The Olevia 532H sold in U.S. is made in Taiwan for U.S. market.
Olevia Hong Hong makes a 532H PAL/ATSC that is not for sale in U.S.
Make sure any TV you buy for U.S. is NTSC/ATSC and not PAL/ATSC
Frank_Aviator 01-28-07, 08:35 AM really but the dealer told me that this one are made from US not in hong kong and i just pay about US$490 (2999 Hong Kong Dollar ) is it good to use this TV in PS3

At 8ms, slower moving objects are more annoying than quick moving objects. You will notice this with the PS3. Get the fastest response time you can afford if you're really into gaming. These sets have a noise reduction filter that you can set to low/med/high. When watching sports in 1080i, I find it best to set the set to high to avoid the ghosting. It works well.

No ghosting superfast response time of 1ms best LCD tV I have ever seen I'd buy this one over a Sony or a Sharp any day of the week. To bad I bought a different model already. Hey does this dealer accept trade ins on used TV's?
weberman 01-30-07, 04:33 PM last question can use this TV in PS3 and cable TV do they really have ghost or slow response 8ms and do they really have a annoying noise they talk about :D :D :D :D
Repeat: This TV is not for U.S. market. It is not compatible with U.S. TV. It is a PAL specification TV. Perhaps someone else can tell you about PS3 but I would have to believe that a PS3 sold in the U.S. would have to be built to NTSC specs.
Olevia Hong Kong does not build TVs for U.S. market. That is also why they are priced in HK dollars and not U.S. dollars.
phipp01 01-30-07, 04:55 PM Repeat: BUY BUY BUY!!!!!!! Best Tv out there!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

It would have been helpful if told us from the start if you told us that you are in Hong Kong. Most of the questions here pertain to North America so answers are geared as such.
PCCW Limited is the largest communications provider in Hong Kong so I presume that is where you live.

gpflepsen 01-30-07, 09:17 PM Frank, I say any and all are welcome here. But, as you found out, our area of 'expertise' is probably with North American products. Let us know how the HK version works for you.
p.s. 8 ms is slower than 1 ms. 8 ms is nothing to look down upon and was unheard of just a few years ago. I think Olivia makes a decent product for the price range. My 532H gives a great HD pic and also works well as a monitor. I don't see why your LCD wont give great pics given a good source.
Frank_Aviator 01-30-07, 11:39 PM thanks for the quick reply now i know that smaller are faster than bigger even in ms ( what is ms? by the way "micro second" or "milli second" hehehe any idea ) i feel a little regret right now but i hope this regret fade away after i use the TV

ceprise 02-01-07, 03:43 PM Is it formatted FAT16 or FAT32? There was a readme in the firmware for my 532H that said it would only work with one of the types. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which it is right now.
Ok, here is what I found out, and what is not detailed on the firmware upgrade README or instructions.
The instructions do say to format the USB drive as FAT32. The minimum volume size for FAT32 is 512MB. So the minimum USB drive that can be used for firmware upgrade is 512MB. Since the upgrade files are only 9MB, I was using a 16MB USB drive, which was formatted as FAT. The Olevia 226V-S11 would not recognize the 16MB drive.
I changed to a 2GB USB drive formatted to FAT32, transfered the unpacked firmware files (5 files) to the 2GB USB drive and inserted it into the back of the un-powered 226V. Upon powering up the set, the upgrade worked as described.
The upgrade resets all setting to original factory settings. After the upgrade, you need to re-set the picture to home mode, re-scan the channels, and make any other adjustments you previously made. So you may want to go through the MENU and note your settings before the upgrade.
I will send this by e-mail to Syntex Olevia.
mikekingaa 02-02-07, 12:49 AM The minimum volume size for FAT32 is 512MB. So the minimum USB drive that can be used for firmware upgrade is 512MB.
Where do you get this information? I used a SanDisk 256MB drive formatted with FAT32 and it worked fine.

ceprise 02-03-07, 10:03 PM Where do you get this information? I used a SanDisk 256MB drive formatted with FAT32 and it worked fine.
My Windows XP/HP Total Care on-line HELP told me so. When I searched for "FAT32" help it gave me a table:
choosing_between_NTFS_FAT_and_FAT32.htm
Under Fat32, it stated that the minimum volume size for FAT32 is 512MB. Did you format the SanDisk yourself? When I tried to format the 16MB USB drive in WinXP, it only gave me the FAT option, not the FAt32 option.
weberman 02-03-07, 11:33 PM Don't know about a flash drive as small as 16MB but I formatted my Sandisk 256MB flash drive myself. I had a choice of FAT and a drop down menu choice of FAT32.
So, 512MB is definitely not the smallest volume that can be formatted with FAT32.

Does it have optical audio in on the TV and optical audio out on the STB? If so get a TOSLink cable and I believe that will do it. You might have to change something in the settings on the STB :)

After their fiasco on the car seats for babies and the general dislike for them on this board I really dont think that would influence anyone that participates here. BTW I own a 537h and a 232v and I love them both. Well maybe I love the 37 more lol :D
I have a new 527V that makes a contant humming noise in the vicinity of the power supply. The tech at Olevia kept refering to audio connections, even after I informed him that it wasn't coming from the speakers but the back of the unit where the power lead is plugged in. This is most noticable with the unit on and no signal feeding it and all other devices turned off.
Volume is all the way down, by the way, and audio is through a receiver.
He also wasn't sure as to whether having the set on top of a speaker enclosure with unshielded drivers would have a negative impact. The drivers have rather hefty magnets, and I'm not sure how well shielded the electronics are in these.
Thanks

Yes, use a DVI to HDMI cable from Monoprice, and a separate cable for audio from your Moto box outputs, to the audio input jacks that are located right by the HDMI input jack. I'm doing this with a MOTO MOXI box, and it works fine.
Consumer Reports March 2007
Best Buy, 40 inch and larger (6th place)
Olevia 542i
2nd place, 32 inch models
532H
They didn't rate the 37 inch Olevias though :(
The 537h would probably rate about the same as the 532 since they are identical except for the screen size.
