Am I safe in assuming so since it is a Universal title? If yes, do you think we might see it this year?

Thanks,
Tom

I sure hope so too... love this movie. It will be interesting to see if the HD DVD release will be chapterless as Lynch likes. I understand his reasoning, but it's kind of a pain in the a**.

Studio Canal is releasing it as one of their first HD-DVD titles in Europe. So depending on how they handle the frame rate issues, it should be importable. As for Universal here, I'm sure it will get a release eventually, but it's probably not one of their higher priorities. Though some of their other releases have hardly been blockbusters either, so you never know.

I'm just glad to see I'm not the only David Lynch fan here! Throw in Lost Highway, while you're at it, Universal!

Does Universal own Lost Highway? I thought the rights to that were essentially in limbo. I would die to get an HD-DVD of Lost Highway.

Lost Highway on HD-DVD!!! It isn't even on DVD yet. I don't know what the status is on who owns it but any lynch film would be awesome! I'd love to see Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

For any Lynch fans on a non-HD-DVD piece of news: Twin Peaks Season 2 will be out this fall on DVD. He also is finishing up his newest film and should hopefully be out later this year or early next year in theaters!!!!

Sadly, his new movie (Inland Empire) is shot on Standard-Def DV. He's been playing around with the format for the crap he makes for his web site, and is now totally infatuated with it. He says he's never going back to film. He likes the "freedom" of just picking up a camera and shooting whatever's in front of him without worrying about how incredibly lousy the picture looks.

Mulholland Drive was on DTheater so I think it will likely hit HD-DVD here sooner rather than later. Just be advised that the film is very soft. You will not get a crisp image. The DTheater, even with it's insanely high bit rates, was just a little better than the DVD (due to the lack of compression artifacts mostly).

Universal has run Lost Highway a couple of times on its Universal HD channel in the past few months. It looked great and the audio was especially good. I assume that it was the David Lynch-supervised transfer. If it makes it to HD DVD, I think all of the Lynch fans here will be very happy.

They acquired the rights to the film through their purchase of USA Films (who had purchased October Films). Universal hadn't done anything with it on dvd or any other format due to Robert Blake's legal troubles. Lynch already supervised a new transfer which has been sitting on the shelf for some time now and only just now saw the light of day on Universal HD.

I'm sure by the time he does his next film after Inland Empire, he will at least shoot on 1080i DV. After all, it's no more difficult to shoot on that than on film.

Heck, if you really want, I was a member of his website and a few people there have direct access to Lynch. I could pass a message along that he should make films in 1080. ;)

Anyone know what audio tracks are included? TrueHD? DTS?

All Studio Canal discs use DTS-HD Master Audio.

That said, this was one of their problematic titles with pitch too high.

I was hoping this was the MD with Jennifer Connelly, Nick Nolte, and John Malkovich.

The name of that movie was Mulholland Falls, not Mulholland Drive. Completely different movies.

Although Nick Nolte and John Malkovich would have made this movie pretty darn funny.. I just can't see Nick Nolte (moreso JM) doing the dialog in Mullholland Drive

If the disk is played in the country of manufacture is the pitch wrong then too? Seems to me it would be, but I'm not sure.

Now that I am purple I would like to see a blu release of this, but I suspect it may be years away. Although many critics liked it, it did not do well at the box office, and I would not expect to see a rush to do a release in HD here. I have seriouly considered ordering the HD DVD through xploited cinema, but I think the audio problems would ruin the film for me. Too bad.

Agree that a N. American BD release will be a long time coming if ever, perhaps Studio Canal will release on BD some time from now without PAL speedup.

I still consider this one of my top HD possessions however. The pitch is only noticeable to me in a couple scenes. It seems limited to certain voices to my ear. The Llorona scene is worth every nickle spent on this one.

I might have to reconsider and buy it anyway! Thanks for the information.

Yes, the pitch is wrong no matter where you play the disc. People in Europe are used to PAL and are less likely to be bothered by it.

Is there any possibility they corrected that problem, since I sure don't notice it on the disk I received recently.

The import version has has an undocumented (AFAIK) feature. The original US release intentionally had no chapters - it was one big movie. The import has chapters but no 'scene selection' feature - you can chapter skip forwards and back, but there's no menu for going directly to a particular scene.

I found this out more-or-less by accident. It's a nice addition.

Have you actually tried using the chapters on the disc to find a scene you want? The chapters are not arranged by scene or storyline. They're all encoded at a fixed 3 minute length and will deposit you wherever in the middle of a scene or the middle of a line of dialogue that happens to land. Skipping through the chapters that way really isn't any more useful than just scanning with the fast forward button. In fact, it takes longer.
