It offers bookmark function. Same concept but you will have to press bookmark button before turning off the unit. Will resume from where you bookmarked.

This sounds exactly what I'm looking for....maybe. I just put in a HP MediaVault NAS drive that has drives formated in a modified form of ReiserFS.

"The HP Media Vault can also stream media files to other PCs in your household or to any UPnP-compliant digital media adapter"

Does anyone know if the N35 will see this NAS unit? Or, Who I could write to, to get an answer to this question. I will be asking HP about it as well. It will be a shame if they don't talk to each other, I have been searching for days and thought I finally found the perfect unit for my needs :(

Has anyone tried the new DivX 6.2 stuff yet?

Thanks

Is it possible to copy files from PC to N35 and from N35 to PC without NDAS draives installation to PC? Example I go to my friend home, bring N35 with me. I want copy some pictures from his PC to my N35 disk and he wants some pictures from my N35. He doesn't want to install any draivers to his PC and he is using a router.

hi,
my new N35 arrived yesterday. what a beauty :-)
same problems than others before. VOB streaming is not possible over network (neither NAS nor PC). very choppy picture, sound comes and goes :-(
o.k. then copy all movies to HD in N35. NDAS connection is fast and other NDAS devices are detected from N35 without any work from me.
playing movies (DVDs without menu and 2 languages) works perfect, but i could not change the language by pushing the audio button. neither in 2 seconds nor in 20 seconds. info button shows me, that there are 2 languages available.
movies always starts with english language. no chance to switch to german :-(.

any solutions or ideas from the "old" users :D ?

in total i am a little disappointed. before i use xbox as media streaming tool.
the skin is boring.
no way to make shortcuts to networkdrives, pc or folders.
config menu is a little weak (i need more config options).
why is there no way to use the net (cddb or radio)?

looking forward for new (innovative) firmware

I’m using the firmware V1.18. Just upgrade it few minutes ago. Get it from http://www.divxtech.com/support_N35.htm.

Well, all my files are ripped DVDs with full menu, no compression. And, I stream them from either of two locations, from a PC’s shared folder and another N35 with hard drive. My videos come through beautifully. Not experiencing picture or sound problems that you mentioned. My PC and one N35 with hard drive is connected via Ethernet cable while the one N35 without the hard drive is configured wirelessly using the wireless Ethernet converter. I tried playing just the VOB file and it seems fine.

Oh, I don’t know which firmware version it was but I do can change the language by pressing the audio button and change subtitle by pressing the subtitle button all while the movie is playing.

I would recommend trying streaming a full DVD with menu to see if your original file was a problem. Also, check the IP Setting under setup and make sure its set to AUTO. One time, I had it set to manual and had address conflict. Result was a messy video.

Good luck

thanks for hint
perfect. first thing at home ist the update - 6h to go :-)

At this moment i try to copy my MP3 files from ext. NDAS to N35. Speed is low.
When i copy large files (exp. VOB's) speed is good.

Is there somebody with experince in playlists? Whats the best and fastes way to create one?

thanks

Strange update, the 1.18, focus seems to be on compatibiltiy on ODD's.
I thought the whole idea with the media server was to get rid of the disks.

I still lack any hint on which non-compressed audio format it will support, if any.

for me it makes sense with the opt. drives. if it works perfect, i can get rid of DVD player.
i use it now for one week. the main issue for me is the userinterface. not nice and not very comfortable. also scrolling through mp3 or long lists. player also useless.

the other point, if i want to play dvds or tracks from one folder, i have to open it. make sense to start a CD or a DVD from folder. with my xbox i push a button on the folder and the movie starts or push on titel directory of cd and the cd starts to play without pushing on first mp3 or ifo or vob file.

i think hardware is not bad... but userinterface is so boring and programmed without an sense for the theme...

will play for some more days. but i think thats not the solution for me :-(

is there something on market with features like the xbox media center?

Yepp, It works alot better if you make .iso files instead. Then you get a file per DVD, and can keep all in one folder.

I use the playlists created with winamp, works fine. Place the .M3U file in the folder with your MP3-files.

Obiwahn, thanks for answering for my stupid question. I studied a little bit NDAS technology and got my N35 device.
I updated firmware to v1.18 and try play my first DVD rip, but N35 didn't play it from IFO/fail:(
Actually it didn't do nothing, tried with last stabile v1.12 and the result was the same:(
Watching inside the IFO seems that problem my be caused from 2 PGCs menu.
Does N35 support multiple pages PGCs??? If not, will be???
If does not, then may be someone can reccomend a simple tool to get rid of second menu page?

Shemmmy, yes you can open and play smb shares with N35. Just share your DVD-ROM drive. From russian gui I don't know nothing, sry.

I assume that you did the following steps to share your DVD drive. At least this is what I did.

- Double click on “My Computer”.
- Right click on the desired DVD drive and select “Properties”.
- You are shown 4 tabs. Click on “Sharing” tab.
- Under “Network sharing and security”, check ON the box for “Share this folder on the network” then press “OK”.
- When you turn on the N35 and go to “Share PC Selection” and select your PC, you should be able to see the shared DVD drive.

No installation is needed, just share like usually. Try not too long share name. I find out that N35 did not see long sharenames. I donn't tested how many characters is limit. Try first with max 8 charactes.

New firmware out. Version 1.20

http://www.divxtech.com/support_N35.htm

Check it out.

BTW, did any one try the new NDAS driver Version 3.20. I saw it at ximeta’s web site (http://www.ximeta.com/web/support/download/windows_xp/drivers/v3x/index.php) and its marked beta driver.

I've update to Version 1.2. Haven't checked out its fixes yet.

I also updated my NDAS driver on my PC to Version 3.2 can't say I noticed any difference.

Divxtech will send out a new video board for those who bought early. See their website forums. Notified them early today and they sent me an email today saying they've shipped one to me.

Hey guys,

Anyone experience a video picture that stops and the sound keep going for about 6 or 8 seconds....then the video picks back up again? This didn't happen until after I upgraded to 1.20.

Pre 1.20 and currently....Also, anyone experience videos that stop and the screen goes black? I have had this with MPEG-2, AVI (Xvid and DivX). This happens at any time and is random, however is impossible to replicate. DivxTech told me to defrag the hard drive...? That's a little scary if this machine can't handle jumping from one place on a to another on the hard drive!

The firmware on this thing has a long way to go but I think it has so much potential.

Thanks.

See its comments like that that are stopping me from picking this up over a tivx. I like the look of the player, it sounds fine but as its so new theres no guarantee about firmware releases (though I know theres been a couple already). After their track record with the mp101 I aint going anywhere near netgear (even though I use one of their routers)Whereas with tivx for the most part the 5000a and now 4000 have had fairly constant updates all along.

Hmm choices, choices....

I agree with you. I chose the N35 based on my research and future potential. There are so many options out there now and I have to wonder why, when these firmware updates come out for the N35, why they aren't focusing on the real problems...the common sense stuff, like getting video codecs to work properly! I have a couple of media players like this one, by different companies and they all have problems consistently reading codecs properly....I am amazed they can sell a product that doesn't work like it should but I'm learning this is the business of these machines, especially so new in the world of technology.

Give it another couple of years and I think they'll have it nailed. We're all just diving in and taking a chance...I admit that.

Hi Guys,
I have been following the threads on both this site & on the mpcclub forum, for the N35. I am almost ready to place an order for one, but thought I would just double check a few queries with the guys that own them, before I part with my hard earned cash.

The main reason I have for purchasing this player is for its video streaming capabilities, I am not bothered about its music or picture capabilities. I will be typically streaming movies on a hard wired network directly from 2 PC's, via a Gigabit hub using Cat6 cable. My query's are thus :-

1/ Are there any known problems playing HDTV DivX or HDTV Xvid files ?
2/ I have quite a large collection of HD movies which are in .ts format. They vary in size from 8Gb to 20Gb (typically 1080i - res 1920x1088 with audio bitrate on average 448kbps. Has anybody had problems playing files like these?
3/ Finally, has the aspect ratio been fixed yet. I have a 32"Philips PW9380
and will be connecting to it via DVI, whilst the audio will be connected to my surround sound via the optical option. I just want to be able to view movies so that the picture fills the screen most of the time. I realise this is not always possible & as long as the letterbox bars are small as opposed to covering half the screen this will not bother me.

Hope you can take the time to put my mind at rest before I purchase or maybe you can point me in the direction of a better player if this one is deemed by you experts as not suitable for my requirements.

PS. I have a rock solid 8Mb ADSL connection & can currentlly stream all the above files wirelessly to my laptop, where they play in PowerDVD absolutely flawlessly.

Thanks in advance
Darrell

Take a look at the remote in this picture of a Tvix (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=797245) unit.
Look familiar?

My N35 does not do well with .ts files stored on it's internal drive or on a network drive.
It's unable to keep video & audio in sync.

Mine arrived yesterday, USPS from NJ, I'm in CA, so it took a while. Installed it today. Sure is nice to use component out at 720P and not feel like I've been drinking. Whatever they did, they fixed it. I was surprised there was no sheet of paper included on how to do the "upgrade". But it was straight forward.

I am having major problems seeing shares on my laptop. I foolishly updated the OS to Vista Ultimate yesterday & after about spending about 5 hrs trying to get my N35 to see share files on laptop, I gave up. I have set up a Private Network with Windows Firewall turned off & Guest account on. I have set up permissions for access & have added in (Everyone & Anonymous with full access) but no joy. The other PC's I have on the same network can all see & access files on Vista Laptop, while the N35 see's the shared folder on Vista Laptop but when opened shows no files inside. I have really scratched my head over this one. If any of you guy's are running Vista & have had similar issues your help would be deeply appreciated.

Kind regards & TIA

Make sure all PC's are on the same workgroup. For some reason when you set up a workgroup it will default to just "WORKGROUP". As my other PC's are on MSHOME I hade to rename the Workgroup & now everything works fine from PC to PC. Still no joy getting my n35 to see any files from my Laptop though.

I am impressed - This piece of kit looks like the d0gs b0ll0cks!

But I have a video file compatability question before I buy:

My video camera outputs movies in .MP4 format and would need N35 to play these without any fuss. The stream attributes (from VLC player) are:

Video
Codec: mp4v
Resolution: 640x480
Frame Rate: 29.970029

Audio
Codec: mp4a
Channels: 2
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
Bitrate: 1536 kb/s

(The camera is a SANYO Xacti C40)

Can anyone tell me if these will play okay? I can supply a sample file is required.

After trying the Helios X3000 and Zensonic Z500 I am getting more picky and particular as I seek the network media player that will meet my needs. My main interest is playing full DVD rips with menus, extras etc. off of a .iso or full file rip from the .ifo.

The Z500 still fails about 30% of the discs I try even with the new firmware.

I've determined that a good extreme test disc that lots of folks have is Avia. It has a pretty complex title/menu structure. Can anyone with a N35 confirm if you can play a fill rip of Avia and navigate all the menus just like you would from the disk in a standalone player?

I just purchased a Rapsody N35 to replace my Dlink DSM 320. I am still getting it up and running, and I do not have a drive in it yet (I have it connected over an ethernet powerline adaptor pulling files off of my NAS drive), and I have a few questions:

1) For video, there is at least a 20 to 30 second delay after I hit play before the file starts playing. For audio tracks, there is about a 10 second delay. Is this normal and is this happening to other owners? This is a major bummer to me if so. There was a 5 second (at most) delay with the Dlink for video and none with audio.

2) I was pretty psyched when I read that people were able to play pretty almost every kind of divx, avi and xvid with the N35. For all its faults, my DSM 320 played just about any flavor of avi that I threw at it. I am having touble playing about 1/3rd of my avi's on the Rapsody. I get a file format not supported error. It happens on various files so I cannot pin down what the problem may be.

Anyone else have this problem?

3) I get much studdering on divx files when connected over the powerline ethernet adaptor. I got very very little with the DSM 320 (a seemingly very inferior unit). I certainly did not expect this and it is preventing me getting any real use out of the N35. Any advice?

4) I am using only what firmware came with the unit - v 1.1. I assume that I need to upgrade - maybe some issues will go away.

Any advice would be appreciated.

-David

UPDATE AS OF 3-8-2007

I bought a Buffalo Ethernet Converter and it now streams SD divx wirelessly like a champ. Also, the delay after pressing play is only 5 seconds or so on video and less than that on audio. For some reason, the file incompatability errors have completely gone away also.

For what I use it for (streaming SD divx), this is a quality product. I can't wait to try HD after I stick a drive in the Rapsody.

I'm a new member here and have read all 294 posts in this thread. (Yoohoo or v770 or Nirvana_av still reading this?)

I have a couple questions that haven't been answered (unless I missed it)

1 - Last I read you couldn't access external USB hard drives (externally connected USB to the N35) from your PC. Still the case with the newest firmware upgrades?

2 - Can you plug in a USB DVD drive to the USB ports of the N35 and be able to play regular movies? The 1.18 firmware listed 2 drives that had ODD support. Since I have no idea what that means, I'm still asking this question.

3 - I think what a lot of new people like me are asking is, how buggy is it? Is it going to be at least reasonably reliable? Any thoughts on this? I happen to live what people have described as a 4th world country. Any shipping is going to be expensive and take a VERY long time.

4 - I would mainly like to play music on my HT system, and be able to browse and play my entire music collection with a remote (wherever the mp3's happen to be). I just ripped my first DVD yesterday with DVDFab Decoder, so I'm just now getting into the video thing (hence question 2 above). Downloading video from the Internet is not going to be pretty out here. Is there another cheaper, less buggy device that would serve my needs? I would prefer something that doesn't have to have a PC on. Any other suggestions?

Theres the tvix units that have been out a while now. The firmware for the 5000 is fairly mature now, may be worth a look. Theres also a comprehensive review of both the tivx and the n35 over at www.mpcclub.com

With price both the tvix and the n35 both seem to be in the same area, its the choice of harddrive in the unit that whacks the price up.

Good to see how they prioritize, however I see two personal dissapointments.
1st looking in the mirror and the frequency of firmware upgrades so far,
this is agressive to the border of unrealistic.

2nd , While Ogg probably is great for audio, but I was awaiting a lossless format before I start ripping my CD collection and put it away.

Otherwise good news.

Hi

Im new in the area of media players. I am thinking of buying a player and the choice is between Tvix 4000/5000 and the N35 I think. I'm thinking of using it for all kind of medias video, music and picture, but are mostly interested in "basic" functionality.
I have tried to read everything I find in different forums as well as manuals and other papers but I do have a hard time figuring out what is working and what is not. I can see all players have issues, but right now I think I am going to pick up a N35. I would really appreciate help with my questions below.

1 Is there any known issues left, playing DivX or XviD files (playing from internal hdd)
2 Is there any known issues about using subtitles
3 Is there any major issues sending HD material through DVI output
4 Is it possible to use internet radio
5 Is it possible to view streaming video-material from internet
6 Is it possible to play playlist files (M3u)that includes files in other catalogs
7 Does N35 play all kind of MP3 files.
8 Is there any problem with long filenames in MP3 files
9 Is it possible to turn on N35 and start playing music without turning on the screen (TV or other monitor)

Thx

Thanks for your post on running a playlist from the internet. I created the Playlist folder and added your code to a .txt file (without success) and then renamed the file as a .m3u (didn't work either ...). I would appreciate your advice. I assume I am not placing your code in an appropriate way in the playlist folder.

FYI the N35 is on a network and able to see and be seen by other computers. File transfers are all okay and the latest firmware is installed.

I hope you can help shed some light.

Kind regards,

Hi mikey434,

I know you had sent me a private message but couldn't attach a file but here and thought it would be nice to share it with others.

Check out the attached sample zip file of m3u playlist. Press play on the m3u file and you will be shown a file list (these files are in the host server - rocketboom). Press play on one of the show and N35 will access and play. Now, depending on your internet speed and host traffic the video may take some time to start (be patient). I have slow DSL (I was told that I'm too far from the Verizon CO) and it takes me about 30 seconds to start the video.

The playlist was created using Winamp. Just copy the url and paste it in the playlist. Its that easy.

Good luck and post your result

All,

Apologies if this has been covered and I missed it. Considering an N35 and was hoping to install a HDD in it and use it to store my MP3s (among other media). I have a Sonos system with all of my music currently stored on my desktop PC.

Sonos can work with a NAS or shared network drive. I can't tell if it would work with the N35 with NDAS. I get the impression that, since you need to install a NDAS driver on your PC, Sonos would not be able to access the N35.

Comments?

Thanks.

Your assuption is correct,
You cannot directly access the NDAS device without the NDAS device identifier(kind of similar to a mac address), however you could access the NDAS device indirectly as a share on your computer - this would of course require your computer to be active (defeats the point of NDAS but it should work)

Hope this helps

I just purchased a Rapsody N35 and I am having playback issues. I have backed up my DVD collection to my NAS drives for media server playback.

I have installed firmware version 1.26 and I have my DVD files copied to a folder
called VIDEO_TS. Each time I try to playback a DVD the Rapsody N35 says "LOADING..."
and locks up.

My understanding is that I have correctly ripped my backups of my DVD library. I am able to playback these DVD backups with software packages such as TVedia ] but I am unable to get any of these files to work with the Rapsody N35. Do you have a proven method which might help? I typically use DVDecryptor to backup my library.

This is example of one of my VIDEO_TS folders:

Hello,

I would like to add some additional information.
I have ripped some of my DVD's to do some more testing.
This time I have created ISO files.

I am mounting these files using Damaen Tools and playing back with no problems using
something like Nero Showtime. If I try to play the same file back using the N35
the screen just turns black. I am able to stop the video and return to the menu.

The files are located on my NAS server. I have also tried playback on the NDAS harddrive installed in the N35.

Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

Chris

I have the same issue (kind of), certain iso files play fine over the network but others do not.. what is interesting is that the ones that do not work over the network work fine if the hard drive is local... now what is even more interesting is that my ziova cs505 does not play the same files over the network so I am assuming that it si something to do with how the iso is packaged.

eg - incorreclty packaged iso is read by player and is assumed to be a 4gb mpeg2 file and hence the player is trying to cache too much information over the network and times out - but if it is local then the throughput is much greater and the iso loads.

Someone at mpcclub has suggested that it may be how the rapsody firmware is handling samba, but trying to get any support is next to useless.

btw I had the same behaviour when mounting the iso with d-tools and playing the video_ts folder. I am going to compare the structure of my files that play/don't play over the network and will report back - hopeully within 24 hours.

I am having an issue in that I cannot make the subtitles work with divx/avi files.
I am not sure where to place the .sub files so the rapsody can see them.

Confirmed... I 'took the chance' and installed it on my box last night. All appears well and I agree that it seems to play back better too, especially ISO files. Overall the box seemed a bit more responsive too, traversing the directory structures. I upgraded my network to 1GB switches, so not sure if that is part of what helped. I did notice some ripped DVD's (home movies) still had stuttering in them. This has been a day-one issue and I think related to the mpeg file format my program (VS8) must have used in the older version of VideoStudio. Newly created DVD's (VS10+) work just fine.

Not sure if they used to play with the previous version I have (2.6 - latest on the divxtech site), but then... it's easy enough to revert back to older versions, just reinstall... So-far not seen a reason to go back yet other than that.

Hi. I'm looking for a player that can stream from network media server ISO files reliably with full menu access. After reading most of this thread it appears that this unit might do it. I also play avi and other video formats, but I can use the other media server for that.

I have already tried Mediagate 35 and 350HD and they seem to have stuttering issues on some ISOs and even lock ups. Can someone using it primarily for ISO via network (not local hard drive) tell me if it is worth it? Or should I get the Tvix 4000? Where is the best place to get this unit in the US? Thanks.

30% not playing is bad...

Supposedly the latest firmware is better...has ISO playback improved to be worthy of using it exclusively for ISO? I know most other media players have problems with ISO streamed over network at high bitrates, but I'm really looking for the best unit that can do this even if it is not 100%...

Does any one have first hand experience with both TVIX 4000 and this unit to suggest which is better for ISO playback (or any other unit other than MediaGate)? Thanks!

I would recommend installing a large hard disk in the N35 and using that for storage. When I create or dl DVD ISOs, I do that directly to the N35 disk as it shows up as an external drive in all my other networked PCs. The NDAS solution is very fast and I regularly play ISOs and HD xvid to several PCs and my HD LCD TV at the same time. If you need to copy a 4.37 GB ISO, it's done in a few minutes - almost like copying it between two internal drives.

I believe you could also connect an external USB hard drive to the N35, if the internal storage runs out.

yes, 30% is bad. however, after turning all of them to IFO files (which was very very easy), i have NO problems playing any of them. i have 1 TB of storage that's all filled up now. i am going to buy another TB very soon. the convenience and the absence of clutter is worth it to me...

http://www.divxtech.com states that the firmware ver 3.02 posted on the rapsody.de website is a beta version and has a serious error when viewing large jpeg files. They hope to have a new firmware version posted by the end of the month for the N35 on their website.

FWIW. The only issue I have had with ISO files (stored on a separate NDAS disk) are typically with the 2nd disks of 2 disk sets and their menu selection. Since the movie has always been on disk 1 it really hasn't been a show stopper.

pkeegan,

Can you comment on the 30% ISO playback issue experienced by EazyM3? 30% is a large number to be ignored and converting to IFO is not an option since I have other media clients that will not support IFO on the same network. For example, how many different ISOs have you served through the N35? What exactly is a 2nd disc problem? Isn't each disc a separate ISO and how could that contribute to a problem on the N35? Does any of the ISO playback with stuttering via wired ethernet? Any improvement since the latest firmware? I primarily use DVD Dedryptor/Shrink to create the ISOs is that similar everyone using ISOs on their N35? Thanks.

On the 2nd disk ISOs I'm unable to select anything in the menu. I use Dedryptor/Shrink to create the ISOs like you. I've always been able to get the first disk ISO file to play through the menu, the other menu selections on the first disk work as well, and I have tried about 30 movies. I don't have very many 2 disc sets so I haven't run into the issue that often but it has happen on most of the 2 disc sets I tried. Again these sets the 2nd disk is just additional addons and not the movie. I've had no issues with stuttering on DVD files play via ethernet from a separate NDAS disk where my movies are stored.

pkeegan,

Thanks for the info! Have you ever tried to play full high-bit rate ISOs (usually larger than 5GB) directly ripped from the DVD, not shrunk with DVD Shrink? Those tend to be the ones have give playback problems with the other players like MediaGate.

pkeegan
08-23-07, 08:45 PM
The movies (ISOs) I have are uncompressed and are usually around 8 GB in size. I did use Shrink to create the ISO files but turned off compression.

One file per disc. Since they are stored on a separate NDAS disk attached to my home network these files have not had any dropout issues that I've noticed. Note: NDAS disks have higher transfer rates from unit to unit since they use a unique driver. Please see http://www.ximeta.com

I tried saving and playback of an OTA HD broadcast via the N35 but it had issues regardless of whether it was stored on the drive in my N35 or on the separate NDAS disk. It kept loosing audio sync.

Nice upgrade though, looks like they have a renewed vigor to catch bugs and add features but we’ll see.

I don’t use Vista so I wouldn’t know how to test that.

Can anyone give examples of how the playback has been improved?

Thanks.

I see they still didn't fix the DVD subtitle problem. I rarely use subtitles except for foreign films. It seems that N35 have difficulty selecting the right subtitle when the TV output is set to 16:9 aspect ratio. The English subtitles are displayed OK but other language subtitles are shown as English. This is not a problem for me but I’m wandering how rest of the world is dealing with it. Other Aspect ratio, 4:3 works fine on the DVD subtitle selection or other wise.

Hi All,

Ok, I finally managed to read all of the posts in this forum in the last few weeks.

Here is my environment:

* Gigabit network single switch
* PC media server serving SMB, NFS, and Wizd (will add NDAS if needed)
* ISO files full DVD rips
* AVI files (mostly XVIDs with dual-audio options and .sub/.idx subtitles created by FairUse)
* IFO/TS files are not options for me
* Storing problem files directly on the internal or direct connect HDD of N35 is not an option

The only remaining issues for me on considering this unit are (forgive me for listing some that appear to have been mentioned before but not "clearly" answered):

* Is the ZOOM/aspect ratio issue fixed yet? Seems so trivial but I have to use ZOOM on other players constantly with multiple encoded formats to get the correct viewing results and I believe this will be a problem if not fixed due to the many sources and formats I have in my collection.
* Do DVD ISO multiple audio tracks play and select correctly?
* Does XVID work with SUB/IDX subtitle files?
* Do AVI XVIDs with dual audio select and play correctly? Some players have problem with large XVIDs greater than 1GB that have dual audio.
* This one is not a deal breaker but nevertheless desirable: Do multiple AVI XVIDs joined together play correctly from beginning and dual audio ones select audio correctly after the join? Some of my XVIDs are multiple 700MB files and I try to join them to have just one file but this creates playback point problem for some players (starts playback at the join point instead of the beginning of the file). Also other players will lose the ability to select the second audio track if this join is performed but Windows Media Player has no problem with it...
* Seems there are reports of N35s failing lately that is not due to the video board...any one here experienced it and how was yours fixed?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Let me try to enlighten you.

*1. For 4:3 TV out, you have no problem. For 16:9, don’t touch that [ZOOM] button.

*2. Read *1

*3. Yes

*4. Yes

*5. Well, maybe. Some of the files that I joined work fine and some don’t. I think there is a specific way that you have to join. I still can’t figure it out. But why bother, it will play the next file.

*6. I’m fine.

At the rate Daboda is improving the firmware, I’m sure above shortcomings will be resolved soon. I really like mine.:D

Good luck on your choice, what ever it might be.

v770,

Thanks for the answers. My bad that I didn't put #'s on the original questions for easier follow through.

All questions are answered but the first two still remain a bit confusing:

Answer #1: ZOOM button use is not advised: I had XVIDS that are created as "anamorphic" 720x480 and also those that are NOT. With the current player I have IODATA one must press the ZOOM button to switch between FULL-SCREEN, FIT TO SCREEN, SQUARE PIXEL modes to mate the correct aspect ratio. ISO and DVD files are no problem. Since ZOOM button is "bad" in the N35, can you tell me if you have had the occasion of watching some XVIDS/DIVX's that appear to be shown in incorrect aspect ratios? My main display is 16x9 but as of now I have the IODATA hooked up to two displays at the same time 16x9 and a 4x3, which is used for lower quality 4x3 video materials.

Answer #2. I don't understand how this question would tie back to question #1. Please advise.

Answer #5. It's great to know it has auto-play next file function. That comes in handy for this case BUT it does not eliminate the issue with multiple directory listings that create unnecessary long scrolls. It is not a deal breaker at this point since I have to deal with it with other players already.

Answer #6. More of a concern that require some other user feedbacks...I would hate to have the unit die on me in 12 months after getting it...how long have you had yours and how often do you use it? More specifically how many hours roughly have you used it in all?

New Question: Looks like some are saying the latest firmwares fixed ISO issues at the expense of AVI compatibility...not good...but has anyone identified a pattern of AVI files or is this true of ALL AVI files not playing well with the new firmware?

Oct 18th 2007 New beta on divxtech website

Hi-Jack
10-18-07, 11:45 PM
Beside the FW updates, Daboda must bring the player back under attention a
little as well so it get's more help reporting issues and ideas from the community.
It's sad it continues to communicate only an divxtech forums (which is a
reseller web site) and not with places it reaches so many more users...
(only 450 users over there of which maybe 10% n35 users).

It would restore some of the confidence we ost with Dacos and now with
Daboda that seem to handle things rather wrong though they update the
player to the best of their abilities... Feel the action is missing a little and
hopefully that will return in time...

I love the player for standard use but some issues still prevent me from using
it as the only one (ISO for example and some other broken stuff). Hope they
will step up the ladder a bit and play on a higher level with us want they we
be considering the Daboda players in the future... (branding, showing aid and
communications etc...)

What devices can go into the USB ports at the back? Obviously a Hard Disk drive but can I plug in, say, a USB DVD drive to play DVDs directly?

Just ordered a Rapsody box from a German e-tailer and looking forward to having a play!

Hi-Jack

Dunno if supported, on some it is but then still limits the ability to play commercial (CSS) protected DVD's... Backups should work if it supprts external USB disks... There's also a trick you can use, by mounting DVD on a PC and share it over SMB...

I want the best possible video quality on my tube TV (Philips) that is component RGB (via SCART). RGB output is only on DVI. So are there any DVI-SCART cables and will this work?

The chip used cannot process H.264... The Company Dacostech no longer exists and the spinoff ( Daboda) only comunicates with about 15 users at some reseller over at divxtech... www.divxtech.com

We tried getting them see more consumers but they are stubben...
It's a dead peace of equipment very much from here on off...

I use a little program called divxmanager from divxtec support site. Its very automated and works brilliantly. There is no manual for the software tool but its somewhat intuitive. Try it.

And another firmware is released :-)

Rapsody N35 Firmware V3.08-071104

1. hide OSD (On Screen Display) during AUTOPLAY and next file play for video

I really hope they keep producing these updates for the daboda/rapsody player...

v770
11-11-07, 08:06 PM
I'd rather have an option to hide the OSD altogether.

I don't need it to tell me that its playing when I just pressed the play button, nor tell me its FF when I just pressed the FF button. I don't know, thats just me. What do you think?

Finally the ISO issues with subs are fixed. This mnakes a big difference and N35 (or
better HMC-1 as it is called now) is back on the map... Good job. Now hope the
company will more communicate in the open in the near future as well and not only
and divxtech...

I've still got issues with the aspect ratio on my player

I use it to play AVIs my wide screen PVR records but they have no aspect ration flag so play as 4:3 on the 16:9 screen

Pressing aspect cycles between modes but makes no change to the aspect.

I've tried V3.08-071104 but that has issues with my ISOs and won't play my homemade DIVX and i've downgraded to V3.07-071030 and that plays both files better but still no aspect control?

Any ideas anyone?

Also, should i flick the switch on the back from PAL to NTSC if i play NTSC discs?

If they dont implement X.264 support in a hurry I think we can write the N35 off as sidenote in mediaplayer history. Sure the NDAS was quite nifty and the design was nice but between the .iso issues and x.264 support there have not been much joy for the N35 owner.
The media content container standard is not waiting for the N35 and with x.264 being the new dafacto-standard out there the developers need to implement support or discontinue the Daboda (Rapsody already being dead).

I just got my new N35 last night and Im currently ready to throw it in the bin.
Connected up and all seemed okay ( default FW 1.15 ). After 2 hours I eventually managed to play an MP3 from a USB stick. The PC NDAS software was the biggest bag of flaky, unresponsive rubbish Ive ever used.
( Im running Windows XP Pro SP2 ).
At this point I installed FW 3.02 ( forced recovery from a stick as it could not see my PC drives ).

Currently it NOW has :
A 20 gig WD drive, my PC has the NDAS software installed.
Ive been able to connect the NDAS drive FROM the N35 TO the PC and transfer files this way. ( the connection manager software is A LOT better since putting the HD in the N35, as in - it now responds to a mouse press straight away, rather than 5 minutes later ).

I was able to format the N35 HD and copy audio and video files from my pc onto the unit. The unit was able to play them with no problems ( some HD files look really good ).

The N35 can see both my Windows XP machine AND my linux box ( has a samba share ).
However, it CANNOT see any drives or files on EITHER machine.
Neither box has a firewall installed, both have general guest access enabled, both have shared directories with media files present ( they can share between each other without any problems ).

So my problem now is that although my N35 can play media files, it CANNOT stream them from a network PC ( using SMB ), I HAVE to transfer them to the local HD on the N35.

Ive read that other people have had this problem before but never seen an answer to it.

Ive now tried 1.15, 3.02 and 3.06 FW on the N35, with identical results in all cases.

Anyone got any ideas where to look next before I think about returning it for a refund and looking elsewhere
( spent 5 frustrating hours last night trying to get it to work as advertised - eg, a streaming media player ).

Make sure that “Use Simple File Sharing” option is checked.

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Use Simple File Sharing

Greebles
01-15-08, 05:24 PM
Ive tried setting to simple file sharing.
In fact Ive just been through every single option can possibly find to do with file sharing.

My linux box is fine ( it uses samba - eg. SMB )

However, the N35 still refuses to see anything within this pc. It sees the PC okay and the PC can mount its HD as a NDA box.

The N35 can see SOME of the directories on my linux box but only generic things which samba puts as default.
( Im guessing it could be a user access issue - guest account is enabled and has full access to this share ).

Ho hum, another hour of frustration with this N35 POC then.

Greebles
01-16-08, 12:06 PM
Hurrah, finally got my N35 to see ( and play ) the media files streamed over the network from my windows PC.

Seems the problem was NOT actually with the N35 after all.
The KEY thing is that it uses the GUEST account on over SMB.

So, make sure that :
1. Windows has not disabled the Guest account ( even though you turned it ON ).
2. Windows has not set some random crap password without asking you ( click on remove password from the users page )
3. On the shared folder make sure that EVeryone has read access.

Now Ive got it going I have discovered a couple of bugs - if the file list contains bin files ( eg. a disk image file ) then the file you select is out of step with what you get by 1 file ( for each image file ).

Removing the .bin file from the directory resolves this issue.
Otherwise working fine at present.

PS: I also had the same problem using windows 98SE as a source ( but havent resolved the lack of share on this yet - suspect the same problem hit me with sharing from the linux machine.

I have now installed the latest firmware. Great with the JPEG-rotation - bugfix and the implementation of BMP and PNG. All my holiday photos can now be seen on the big screen :-)

It is very positive that the firmware still is being updated and improved. Keep up the good work!

works better with DivX-HD, but still has some problems here
with 1080p files (freezes). We're working on this.

8. Enhanced playback of MPEG *HD* files, it's not perfect yet
(development still in progress, FF doesn't really work)
but it's already better than in our last firmware release.
Please also read the note below!

Note: For some MPEG HD files our "experimental beta" 1.25-b2
(N35 only) will work much better, but contains several
bugs. For users which need best possible MPEG2 HD playback
right now (anyway still no working FF here), this might
be a temporary solution. Of course we'll have this
completely fixed in next version. Anyway it needs some
more time, so we didn't want to hold back version 1.26
just because of this.

9. Fixed that video settings in setup menu did show wrong
information.

1. Added play and pause function for photo slide show,
just press the OK button. Also it's possible now to

---> Don't open the DVD tray while playing (it's needed to
select "refresh" after that).

2. Fixed symptom showing a blank HDD when selecting the
russian language.

---- NEW IN VERSION 1.15 ----

Added support for video files with 2 audio streams. Press the
Audio button on the remote control to switch (note: currently
this may take 10-20 seconds).

new firmware 3.24 is available at swissbull-it.com site.

The zoom feature still doesn't work (hasn't worked for me since ver 3.06) on DVD's.
Can't get a 3x4 DVD to fill 16x9 screen. The N35 output is set to DVI 480p. I use
a separate scaler. So I'm sticking with 3.06. since DVD playback is the primary
use of the N35.

I have an installed hard drive which is where I place the firmware bin file. I browse on the N35 to the file and select it. The N35 asks if I process continuously. I move the cursor and hit OK. Sometimes it will just back me out but other times it will process the file. It goes eventually.

http://www.divxtech.com has new firmware ver 3.25 for the N35. I finally figured out how to use the N35 settings and newer firmware for my video scaler to get a full screen display on my TV with the N35 set to 480p output. I set the Movie Output setting of the N35 to 4x3 letterbox and then adjust the video scaler output format 4x3 or 16x9 as needed by the specific dvd. :)
