I was going to get the Dayton Sub-100 to go with a Panasonic XR-55 and Velodyne Front Row 5 speaker system, but then I noticed the new Velodyne VX-10 subwoofer. Similar specs to the Dayton and only about $150, which is pretty inexpensive for Velodyne. Anybody have any experience with the VX-10? Which one should I go with?

While Velodyne makes some of the best subs, the VX-10 is not one of them. Steer clear. If you want to stay in that price range the Dayton is a better choice. I ended up with the Athena PS4000 and have been very pleased.

What is wrong with the VX-10? Is the Dayton build quality better? Also, how much do you think I could get an HSU STF-1 B-stock for?

I strongly disagree. I not that familiar with the new Dayton sub and I've never heard one, but after reading some of the reviews on it and looking at the build quality, it just doesn't impress me. The VRP subs sometimes get a bad rap on this forum and I always seem to be defending them, but honestly, do you really believe that Bruce Hall and company would risk Velos reputation by building a below par sub? I have auditioned most of the ported Velo subs and the VRP subs will hold their own against all of them in terms of sound quality. They all share the same amp and driver design, and with proper placement and calibration they are very capable. I've owned a VX10, which has received very good bang for the buck consumer review ratings, and in a 1600 cu. ft. room it was able to reach into the high 20hz range without any audible distortion or port noise. If you are planning to use any of the budget subs mentioned and your room is over 1800 cu. ft. ,look else where and plan to spend a bit more money. ;)

In the $150 range, I suspect the Athena is the best bet. Dayton's reputation is built on a 10" design they no longer sell. It's an open question if the current model is as good as the last one.

If you're clever about it, you can find an H100 for $190. It's better than all of them.

I've heard the Athena at Best Buy and although it wasn't under the best test conditions, it had a lot of punch for it's price class. However, I don't believe it is quite as clean or linear as the Velo. As far as the H100 is concerned, if you can pick one up for $190.00, grab it! Just make sure it is from an authorized dealer or you will have warrantee issues if it ever needs repair.

If you offer them $190, they'll probably take it. Another poster has had success at $185.

The Velodyne is built very good. The Dayton can look crappy as for sound the Vel will sound clean but not pack alot in the lowend. I have a VRP1000 and heard a 10" Dayton really hard to tell but he had to send the Dayton back twice to get one without a dent. Now that maybe the seller but????

I respect your opinion, but I have had the VX10 and the Athena in my 16x27x7 room and the Velo was not even close to the PS4000. The Athena is better for music and much/much better for HT. I've tried about 5 subs in that room, so I think I have a feel for the basics (not the detailed specs and charts that are usually discussed). My comments on the Dayton were based on the reviews from others on this forum, so I shouldn't have commented.

Also, I have heard several other Velodyne subs and think their performance is outstanding overall. I just tried the low end of their line and it didn't work out for me.

And your comments on planning to spend a bit more to ultimately be happy are right on the money.

I think some people have a problem with the Velo VRP subs because they are very clean and linear for their price class. Along with the lower power output they don't sound as dynamic as some of the other competitve subs in a larger room. Most of us confuse distortion with output since we can not hear the difference between the primary and secondary signal which is distortion. Don't get me wrong, that can actually be a good thing too.( See Tom Nousaine's comments, "Tiny Killer Subs" Sound&Vision's 6/05 issue.) In my 1600cu. ft. space there was enough gain to enable the smaller Velo to shake the room. Like I mentioned in my previous post I would not recommend these 10'' subs in a space over 1800 cu. ft. or so, especially if you like a lot of boom. Thanks for your reply.

This ebay guy won't give me cheaper than 245 shipped (215+30) I would like to get it at 185, but no luck. I think becoz the growing of H100 reputation in this forum. huh huh If I had more money, I would have gone with Hsu STF-2. Will have to save it from HK AVR 435

I dunno, he still has 9 of 10 available. So they are not flying off his shelves.

If you include the shipping charge, it would be $185+$30, or $215. I submit, not as cheap as an AS-P4000 if you bought it from Best Buy (tax only, no shipping), but still an excellent deal.

They may have both a strict cutoff and a time dependency. Thus, if they won't accept $185 now, you may want to try $190 on a different day of the week.

I don't believe the Athena is in the same league as the H100 anyway. The questions is, does it come with the factory warrantee?
