View Full Version : Coordinated AVS Forum HD DVD purchase
awmurray 07-18-06, 03:21 PM This thread is a spin off from the HD-DVD backers, putting our money where our mouth is. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=700308&page=1&pp=30)
The idea is to show support for HD DVD by buying movies on a specific day. There is no better way to show support for HD DVD than by backing it financially. That is the language the movie studios understand best. If there is a strong demand for HD DVD software, then hopefully Blu-ray only studios will at least go neutral.
We would need to decide on a day to do this and possibly a particular retailer (i.e. Amazon, BB, etc.)
I will update this post with the concensus as it forms.

How about Paramount's launch day:
7/25
Sahara (Paramount)
Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow (Paramount)
Sleepy Hollow (Paramount)
Tomb Raider (Paramount)
If we wanted to go with a big name dealer, I would guess BB, W*mart or CC would be the choices.
BB would be nice since they seem to lean BD from the stories I've heard. Wouldn't it be nice to see lots of people buying 3+ HD DVDs at BB on the same day?
I'll pledge 4 for that day...
How bout Amazon, they show a ranking for purchases, have a review section for each item and also gives 10% discount for a year if you purchase more then 3 hd disks the first time
PM me with the details. I'm in. We should probably do it on the day Universal releases. Seeing their movies fly off the shelf would send a strong statement about what it means to support HD DVD.
I think IronCamel meant the day Paramount releases (not Universal) which is why I thought 7/25 would be a good day.
Do you think it would get enough people in a week?
I'm in but dont think we'll get that big of a following in a week...
Getting everyone to write a review for there current players and hd movies on amazon I would think would have more of a lasting impression
I already have Sleepy Hallow on order, I don't really want the others.
J
DigitalfreakNYC 07-18-06, 03:41 PM I could do Sky Captain that day. Was thinking about getting it.
awmurray 07-18-06, 03:44 PM Do you think it would get enough people in a week?
I'm in but dont think we'll get that big of a following in a week...
Feel free to suggest other dates. I'll update the first post with whatever ends up being acceptable. I'd pick a Tuesday since that is 'release day'.
Afterwards, we can post what we actually bought... could be fun if enough people participate...

Yes, this is a good idea, too.
awmurray 07-18-06, 03:48 PM I could do Sky Captain that day. Was thinking about getting it.
Cool... that makes 4 people already.
If enough people participate, I'll update the first post with names and number of titles...
I'm in for 4 (so far...).
Davin_Felth 07-18-06, 03:54 PM I already planned on buying Sahara, Tomb Raider, and Sleepy Hollow. I didn't really like Sky Captain after seeing it in the theater, but I'm starting to consider giving it another shot.
I'm in for Tomb Raider that day, possibly Sleepy Hollow too.

maybe you want to spread the word at dvdtalk?

Yes, this is a good idea, too.
Why Don't we pick one Movie Like BB KK or HP4 that we will buy same day when its released. The problem is I already have all But the Suxor Tomb raider pre-ordered. With a big title that doesn't have a date already we can aviod any preorders and its something that even if it isn't the greatest ever almost everyone can agree on purchasing it.
David Scott 07-18-06, 04:05 PM I agree to what someone else said, it's hard to get anything organized in just one week. I think a lot of new Toshiba owners are jumping in for the Amazon 10% off deal, meaning they are buying 3 titles to start off. I think if you set a date further down the road it would give this thread time to gain momentum. Perhaps August 8, as there seems to be a lot coming out then too. I'd start a new Poll if I were you and set it up like this:
"August 8: AVS forum Purchase Day: How many titles will you buy?"
I think people who plan on buying the titles on the 25th could wait two weeks to buy them on AVS Day...

Maybe we can do that too...
It sounds like you're already doing your job if you already own everything you want that has been released on HD DVD... I'm using that date to buy 5 (so far) titles that I wouldn't be buying right now... I'm going to get the money for them by selling some SD DVDs of mine (duplicates and the like). I just sold $100 worth this past week so I got the idea to roll that over into HD DVD and show real support for the format.

OK, we'll set the "AVS Day" to 8/8/06. That will give more time and more titles to choose from. And like you said, 2 weeks isn't too long to wait for a title.
I'll keep the first post updated.
awmurray 07-18-06, 04:23 PM "August 8: AVS forum Purchase Day: How many titles will you buy?"

awmurray 07-18-06, 04:29 PM Already ordered next weeks pramount releases on amazon
Well the date is now set to 8/8/06 so maybe you could pick some more ;).
Topweasel 07-18-06, 04:31 PM Maybe we can do that too...

I like this AVS day, Maybe I will use that to pickup Combo movies I had no intentions of buying due to being a combo and theirfore priced to high. KKBB I a movie I would have bought (and maybe 2 to help Shane Black out, great movie) Doom 3 would be another.
Better yet that the wekest of the filled weeks out. I was only going to get Itallian Job, I guess I can get KKBB and Ray (for some reason never saw this), I wasn't going to get Four Brothers either so Maybe that as well. Put me down for 3 KKBB, Ray, and FB.
suprmallet 07-18-06, 04:34 PM Count me in for at least Van Helsing, Apollo 13, and U-571. I may get more if I see anything interesting.
jmpage2 07-18-06, 04:50 PM I think if you really want to do this it needs to be pushed back at least a month so that more members can get involved and more titles are released.
10-20 people ordering movies will not be noticed by retailers.

The poll is out, the date is August 8. This gives us three weeks which I bet will get a lot more than 10-20 people involved. There's already close to that in less than one hour.

I understand what you're saying, but this gives us something to rally around... plus we've got almost 10 people already. Three weeks is quite a long time around here with the volume of traffic. I'd say too much longer and people either would lose interest or wouldn't want to wait that long and buy anyway.
So help spread the word... maybe some online site will pick up on this and post a link... who knows?
The idea is to buy at least one HD DVD that you wouldn't have bought. I'm buying 5 that day that I would not have bought at this time...
This is a concrete way to make a difference in the format war. The only way to vote is with your money.
EDIT: Oh yea, and David Scott is the leader with 6 titles...
EDIT2: And before anyone asks, I have zero financial interest in HD DVD, but I can recognize and support a quality product and superior value when I see it.
Davin_Felth 07-18-06, 05:09 PM This is actually starting to feel like a bad idea to me.
You're asking that we NOT buy movies until August, then buy them then. First week sales matter. I think this will end up actually looking worse to the studios if a lot of people aren't buying the movies when they come out.
mondaycurse 07-18-06, 05:14 PM Since I don't have HD-DVD yet and probably won't for another 6 months, I'll just tell you that if you contact amazon and say that amazon users xx, xx, xx, xx, xx, and xx will buy these HD-DVD on tuesday, you might get some kind of discount or promo code. You'd have to rally up more people before this though.

Well, the idea is to buy titles that you wouldn't necessarily be buying right now anyway.
For example, I'm picking up some that I may not have bought for months anyway.
This is kind of an above-and-beyond vote of support. And, really, money is the only vote that is going to count in this format war.
Pitch Black (if I can find it), "Bling Buy" Sleepy Hollow next week and The Italian Job...!!!
Soycrema 07-18-06, 05:18 PM I like this idea, count me in for (3)
Sahara
U2
Four Brothers
:D
Davin_Felth 07-18-06, 05:19 PM Well, the idea is to buy titles that you wouldn't necessarily be buying right now anyway.
Ah, ok. I misunderstood. I thought you had meant to hold off on buying the 7/25 & 8/1 releases until 8/8. For buying anything that you hadn't picked up yet, sounds like a good idea. But, I think it's important to buy new movies right when they come out so the releases look good to the studios.
CaptDS9E 07-18-06, 05:33 PM Ok if its 8/8 Im in for at least 3.
I Superman I 07-18-06, 05:48 PM Personally I don't like the idea of not picking up Paramount titles on their launch date to wait for this mass purchase, I would think showing such support on their studios launch day would be quite more important, what is being released on the 8th?
efralope 07-18-06, 06:09 PM This is stupid and silly.
That said, I think I'm gonna hold back purchases until this day and work with Netflix until then. I was only gonna buy COMBO, but this sounds like a fun idea.
Ok, so does ordering from amazon.com on this day count? I have a trail to Amazon Prime, so I get free 2-day shipping.
I'll come back and edit what I'll get later, but right now I see myself getting:
-Pitch Black
-Chronicles of Riddick
-IF it has extras: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
I would load up a bunch more if it wasn't for the fact that they aren't COMBO's. I've been holding up on DVD purchases for a long time in anticipation of HD DVD, but I want to be able to share my titles and use them anywhere. That said, I guess I'll hold off one I was going to get for sure, ATL, for that day.
-ATL
Btw, considering the small amount of people that are going to be participating, I doubt it would make a difference to hold off on Paramount 7/25 and 8/1 titles. I doubt the studios would notice a difference either way since what, I doubt we're gonna get more than 50 or so people involved (at best).
BTW, another silly idea for whoever thought this up to keep in the back of his head: how about we do another one of these on the launch day of PS3!!!
p.p.s. yeah this is upsurd, but I've done worse: how about being the guy that organizes Star Wars Fan Day (look it up on googe, this was for The Phantom Menace) in your town, with flyers and getting friends to re-watch the movie one day. ahhh, the memories... the theater people thought I was a nut, but I think they didn't mind even though I doubt I had a big impact...
acegamer 07-18-06, 07:52 PM sounds good to me. Count me in for Aeon Flux, Unleashed and Italian Job.
I normally make my purchases through Amazon, but I'd be okay with forgoing the savings and buying from Best Buy this one time if that is what ends up being agreed upon.
Robert George 07-18-06, 09:10 PM I'm a definite for Italian Job and Animal House.
Will likely also get Aeon Flux because, well, just because ;).
Bob Black 07-18-06, 09:41 PM Italian Job, Animal House and Ray for me on the 8th!
heavyharmonies 07-18-06, 10:04 PM I like the idea. I'll hold off on purchases I was planning until then.
I'm in, assuming that Wal-Mart gets them in; my local WM is extremely bad on getting titles in on release day. I could probably get them at BB, but (1) I don't like giving them my money given their pro-BR bias, and (2) If I buy 5 titles, I'm effectively getting 1 free via Wal-Mart (compared to BB pricing).
Stupid question: B&M only, or are we doing Amazon and DDD as well? I better my buying chances (not to mention buying power) by ordering online... which brings another question... preorders?
I already have 3 titles preordered on Amazon for 9/19.
Anyway, planned purchases for 8/8:
Pitch Black
Tomb Raider
Sahara
Sky Captain
Aeon Flux
fullclipfink 07-18-06, 10:59 PM I'm down for 3:
We Were Soldiers
The Italian Job
U-571
Expletive 07-18-06, 11:29 PM Animal house
Ray
U2
Sky Captain
for me on the 8th...
HDTVwannabe 07-19-06, 12:10 AM I can't promise I'm gonna wait until the 8th - most likely gonna get ASAP (if title(s) come out before 8/8) - but put me down for (at least*) 10 between now and 8/8's releases;
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- Sahara
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
- Sleepy Hollow (1999)
- The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
- We Were Soldiers
- Aeon Flux
- The Italian Job
- Animal House
- Unleashed
* not to mention any additional titles, announced by WB and Universal, that I might want between now and 8/8
Davin_Felth 07-19-06, 12:35 AM PLEASE DO NOT wait on new releases. These next couple weeks are Paramount's first HD DVD releases. This is a horrible time to wait to buy.
If a lot of people don't buy these new releases when they first come out, Paramount can look at it as being poor HD DVD sales. If they don't see good sales, they might skimp back on future releases.
I honestly think this can be a bad idea. Buy the new releases right away, don't wait.
ChrisPC 07-19-06, 01:27 AM Probably:
Animal House
Sky Captain
Serenity
Maybe:
FMJ
Cinderella Man
Sleepy Hollow

Agreed. I'm buying the Paramount stuff as soon as it comes out.

I thought Amazon was agreed upon for a couple reasons, when you buy 3 hd movies it will discount on 10% on this purchase and future purchases for a year, it shows sales rankings for the items to the public and has a review section for each item.
Evangelo2 07-19-06, 09:29 AM awmurray,
Put me down for these 2 definitely
Ray
Sleepy Hollow
and maybe some of these
Cinderella Man
Sahara
Tomb Raider
-Evangelo2

I think it would be fine to buy them anywhere you want to. We're not supporting a particular retailer, but rather HD DVD itself. It would be unreasonable to expect everyone to buy from the same retailer...
Remember, though, the studios will follow the dollars and that's the point of all this. If you want HD DVD to succeed you should support it financially. Ultimately it is the only vote that counts.
This is just a fun exercise and an opportunity to rally around HD DVD. Personally, I think its a shame that some studios are not supporting HD DVD. Right now, that is the big reason a lot of people are holding off on HD DVD-- studio support. I'd love to see that feather removed from BDs cap.
We already know that HD DVD sales are strong. Every little bit more we give it makes it even bigger. Remember it isn't the overall impact, but rather the impact relative to BD sales that matters. The general public isn't buying the software right now-- it's us. If all of us just bought one more HD DVD on 8/8/06 that we wouldn't have otherwise bought it will make a big difference.
What do you think studios will do if HD DVD software owns 75% of the HD movie market?
That said, I'll buy from Amazon just so I can qualify for the discount... I own 10 HD DVDs, but have not bought more than 1 at a time. Since I'm getting 5 (at least) this time, I can qualify for the 10% discount.
I think they have additional deals for pre-ordering not released titles too but would have to look it up to see
IronCamel 07-19-06, 02:42 PM I think IronCamel meant the day Paramount releases (not Universal) which is why I thought 7/25 would be a good day.
Yep that's what I meant. Put me down for sure on:
Training Day
Pitch Black
Sleepy Hollow
Animal House
Sahara
Sky Captain
Aeon Flux
Tomb Raider
PLEASE DO NOT wait on new releases.
I agree with you.
I have already preordered several titles from Amazon and intend to continue snatching up discs as soon as they become available.
The more I read about the problems with Sony and BD just makes me more determined to support HDDVD (even if it means sometimes buying titles I'm not all that jazzed about).
But what I WILL do is buy at least 2 additional titles (maybe more depending on whats available) from Amazon on 8/8/06.
I suspect the studios are looking for good early returns, esp. considering that this is a new format.
Dont wait, get 'em while there hot off the press!!! :D
awmurray 07-19-06, 03:29 PM But what I WILL do is buy at least 2 additional titles (maybe more depending on whats available) from Amazon on 8/8/06.
Yea, that's the right decision...

Just had 3 more movies delivered today. Im up to 14-15 movies now. I'll order more on the 8th with everyone, I'll wait till closer to that date to see what movies I still want

I'm in for The Italian Job myself. I think it would have more impact if we all ordered from the same retailer. Maybe if we get enough participation we could even get some sort of coverage from engadget.com or others on it.
awmurray 07-19-06, 07:55 PM Up to 96 people so far... pretty good.
Gentlemen, I'm in for at least two - Animal House & Italian Job. I'll add others as I see fit...
So the gist is to buy from the retailer/etailer of our choice, correct?? I just checked out DDD for the first time and was very impressed with some of their pricing.
Too bad the forum rules won't allow someone to post the cheapest online price for each individual title - that way we could multi-source to get the biggest bang for our bucks. But I suppose then "Vendor X" would sell out immediately of "Movie Y"...
awmurray 07-19-06, 08:15 PM So the gist is to buy from the retailer/etailer of our choice, correct?? I just checked out DDD for the first time and was very impressed with some of their pricing.
Yes, that's the way it appears. We're trying to support the format not a particular retailer after all.
Looks like it is averaging about 3 per person ~ 333 HD DVDs so far...
Hopefully HD DVD will take a big market share advantage... one that is too hard to ignore.
ryoohki 07-19-06, 08:34 PM I'am buying 2 title from Amazon on aug 8... U2 and Aeon Flux
I'll be definately buying:
Sleepy Hollow
Tomb Raider
Four Brothers
The Manchurian Candidate
We were Soldiers (A kick ass war flick)
Aeon Flux
Ray
Unleashed
COACH2369 07-19-06, 09:10 PM I will have my HD-DVD player and new projector setup a week from tomorrow. I have only purchased SwordFish..... So count me in!
Sahara
Training Day
Serenity(only because everybody talks about how good it looks)
Italian Job
Eddie Horton 07-19-06, 09:30 PM I'm in for:
Sky Captain
Bourne
KKBB
...Serenity(only because everybody talks about how good it looks)...
Then you should check out Phantom - still the most impressive in my book! I also have Serenity and it's pretty darn good too...
Stan Rozenfeld 07-20-06, 02:45 AM I'll pick up Enter The Dragon and Pitch Black.
Stan
I Superman I 07-20-06, 03:43 AM Alright, well no 100% promises that I'll be able to hold off till the 8th but I guess I'm good for....
TombRaider
Sky Captain
Sleepy Hollow
Sahara
We Were Soldiers
Italian Job
Training Day
Friday Night Lights
That's 8 right there, may possibly be able to add Cinderella Man and Pitch Black, dunno, however it's going to be hard for me to wait that long, personally I'd rather support Paramount titles on the day they are released instead of the 8th, so a couple might be purchased, I'll try though :o
Eric D. 07-20-06, 03:57 AM I don't see the point in "holding off" on Paramount titles. It may actually cause more harm then good. I just think that people should buy the Paramount titles as soon as they are released to show Paramount that they did the right thing by releasing their films on HD DVD. Now if you want to pick up other studio's stuff on the 8th that has been out for some time now, that's fine.
Edit: I'll be picking up The Italian Job and Enter the Dragon on the 8th for sure. May even force myself to go for Aeon Flux just for the sake of this support day even though I'm not crazy about the film.
So the gist is to buy from the retailer/etailer of our choice, correct?
But I suppose then "Vendor X" would sell out immediately of "Movie Y"...
I think thats partially the point is to show Vendor X that there is a large demand on HD DVD disks and they should increase stock and it will be profitable for him.
Looks like it is averaging about 3 per person ~ 333 HD DVDs so far...
Is 3 the magic number? I'll make sure I order 3 then

David Scott 07-21-06, 12:57 AM How about a coordinated AVS forum movement to get some really really good high quality titles out on HD-DVD?(not seeing those released aren't...but let's get the big guns out already!)
If they see the sales are good they will have to give in and start announcing new release dates, etc.
If amazon is any indication, the sale of HD DVD titles is going much better than Blu-Ray. Coordinated events like this may be a drop in the bucket, but the studios may take notice. We are already at around 300-400 titles in the buying August 8 poll. If we make it over 1000 title for that day of purchase it would be cool. I don't know what a typical sales day is for HD titles, but my guess is if avsforum leads to an extra thousand on one day it could make a difference.
Isn't that our goal by supporting the format? Convincing the studios who aren't currently releasing titles on HD DVD to see it's in their best interest to do so. Plus showing the current studios it's in their interest to release the blockbusters sooner than later because there's a market now.
mpalmieri1203 07-21-06, 01:08 AM I'm sorry...I support HD-DVD...But I don't want to spend my money so that, in the long term, the studios will release their better films(once again I've been happy so far...but you know what I mean).

I'm the same way, I don't want to just throw my money away hoping the format takes off to get them to release better titles. But all of us have just recently bought our players (I've only had mine for less than a week) and if you're like me I want some titles now to justify the purchase and show it off. I won't be picking up Dukes of Hazzard on August 8th, but there's enough decent titles out that I can justify buying. I'm even willing to pick up a title or two just because it looks good :D .
I'm in for Good Night and Good Luck, Sahara, and Sleepy Hollow... :D
... I will wait til the 8th for GN&L. As for the other 2, I may not be able to contain myself this Tuesday!

Better titles are coming soon. One of the studios has addressed this issue (I forget which one but could look it up if your interested). They said the plan was never to start with there best titles but to put some average test ones out first and make sure everything is up to par before releasing there best titles. The better titles are due out in the fourth quarter of this year.
I found the article to be interesting considering what happened to blu-ray and there initial titles coming out under par. It makes sense if there initial best titles had problems they would be screwed trying to sell more in the future.

I see 5 in the poll, but 3 here...
Bill C. 07-21-06, 12:38 PM Put me down for Aeon Flux at the very least. Probably a couple of others as well, minus Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (no way in hell I'm waiting on that one).
Seeing as 2 of the titles I currently have in my Amazon cart don't come out until the 8th you can put me down for this as well. 7 titles thus far
Training Day, Aeon Flux, Sahara, Italian Job, Perfect Storm, The Rundown, Sleepy Hollow.

WOW that truly is impressive! Hey awmurray, your idea that has started out simply has made the news!
And I agree it shows that what us, small group of early adpoters that it may be, does have some influence in on the market and the news is referencing what is being said here.
I originally stated that awmurray should start this thread when he mentioned it in another thread and would support it but really wasnt expecting as large of a turn out that its getting already. But seeing this in the news makes me wonder what the follow up on this after August 8th will be.
If the support winds up being small in the grand scheme of things because there isnt enough of us will it hurt the format showing that there just isnt enough of a market for it yet?
Awmurray you posted previously a running total of people supporting the idea and the average of how many movies will be purchased. Keep it going I think thats great.
I said before I'd order 3 movies since you said that was the average, I'll double it now!

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT ON NEW RELEASES! :)
Buy those new Paramount releases right away, don't wait. I'm going to buy some stuff that was already released that I skipped at first on the 8th. But, I'm buying the new Paramount releases right away. By waiting, you're helping to make Paramount's first releases look bad in their eyes.
mpalmieri1203 07-21-06, 05:10 PM OR maybe we should wait so it gives them the message we won't buy their B-titles? I mean of course if you want it buy it. But don't just blindly throw your money on to crap because you want Paramount to put out better titles....Trust me it's not going to make much of a difference. Buy it if you want it don't buy it to get the studios to release better titles...this mentallity is kind of sick imo. I can think of a lot more uses for money then blindly throwing it on to movies you don't like to get these releases...
Just posted a new thread (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=372421) over at AVForums so we can make a worldwide impact...
jmpage2 07-21-06, 05:17 PM Also recommend making a new thread title that has more punch like;
"Massive August 8th HD-DVD Buy"
I'm speaking to the owner of another forum too and seeing if he's interested in joining this coordinated effort. I agree with jmpage the title of this should be changed to include other forums.
To reply to a couple of the other posts above, no I wouldnt buy movies I dont want just to support this but this is a reason/excuse for me to buy a few more movies earlier then I would have planned on.
Also I dont think its gonna hurt Paramount by waiting two whole weeks. There still gonna get the sales but this may show that people are banding together on the subject. It may not change anything at all but also may spread if the news is already starting to reference this.
Just posted a new thread (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=372421) over at AVForums so we can make a worldwide impact...
Mak great thats its spreading but I dont think accelerating things like LOTR is so much of an issue with me at least, it is coming out, the company said they wanted to make sure there was no problems with the new HD's first before releasing there better titles. I'd be depressed if LOTR came out and was like the couple of bad HD's that previously were released. As long as it is this year I'm happy.
I'm more interested to see if accumalted sales on HD's titles will help persuade some of the other title companies that are BR exclusive to start putting out some titles for HD DVD. Showing a high market demand for HD DVD titles may help them see that they could make money by releasing in this format. :)

cityscapex5 07-21-06, 11:09 PM I pre-ordered Tomb Raider, Rattle & Hum and Sleepy Hollow from Amazon ... and believe me I'm only getting Tomb Raider and Sleepy Hollow because I'm starved for HD content. I've seen both in SD and wouldn't consider purchasing them otherwise.

I recommend we do a lot more publicity on this as magazines like VB are read by studio executives. We need to bring attention to our cause.

Rachael Bellomy 07-22-06, 01:11 PM I'll buy atleast 3.... Animal House, Sleepy Hollow, Goodnight And Good Luck, for sure. That I'll do, unless the shelfs are bare by the time I arrive at Busted Buy.
ChrisW6ATV 07-22-06, 03:51 PM OK, I will save up some money and buy at least these six on AVS Day:
Tomb Raider
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Ray
Animal House
Italian Job
Traffic
I do not see a "preferred dealer" yet, so I will plan to maybe intentionally go to two or three places (and maybe I will have to, to find them all) to spread the buying around town.
For an event like this, it seems that "brick and mortar buying" would be best, since it means a big pile of money would get into the hands of the HD-DVD sellers on that specific day. (Also, we all come home with lots of new toys in our hands!)
zalahmar 07-22-06, 05:59 PM I have all the titles between now and the 8th on order. I ordered them from Amazon but they ship them as they get them, so can't really say they will all be bought on the 8th.
bscolvin 07-22-06, 06:02 PM I'll buy 3 at least
HomeTheaterShack has started a thread and are throwing in there support for AVS's coordinated purchase day and this thread. The replies are growing and they are also listing the titles they will purchase on the 8th :)
Link to the supporting thread (http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/cinema-dvd-tv-shows-music/1070-coordinated-hd-dvd-purchase.html)
Hey TomsHT followed your post here and yes I'll buy three titles on the 8th I don't have a local bb so amazon works best for me. Sleepy Hollow , Constantine , Sky Captain and the world of tommorow.
mwoods, great getting 3 hd disks at once at amazon will qualify you for the 10% off discount on that order and any other hd orders for the next year
Yes I did look at that angle of it , also I started using the A9 search engine to gain another 1.5% saw someone else post here about that so hopefully by the time the 8th rolls around my A9 discount will be usable.
Cinemaddiction 07-25-06, 01:59 AM You can mark me down for three titles, as well.
Aeon Flux HD-DVD
Pitch Black HD-DVD
Goodfellas HD-DVD
Great idea, BTW.
Do you think that we can collectively get up to purchasing 1,000 HD disks on the 8th?
RBurgundy 07-25-06, 08:25 AM Ok, put me down for...
Aeon Flux
The Italian Job (2003)
National Lampoon's Animal House
Ray

On the other hand, a lot of people seem to have been using Amazon popularity numbers to evaluate how the formats are doing in the market. Wouldn't it be interesting if the coordinated buy caused a visible blip on http://www.thedvdwars.com/!
Personally I think I will place my order on Amazon, because I like the prices -- and the convenience of having my items come to me. :D
Cinemaddiction 07-25-06, 12:17 PM I'm not looking to pay full price on these, so Amazon is the way to go, especially with the 1yr long 10% discount on your initial purchase of 3 or more HD-DVD's. Roughly $60 w/ free shipping for 3 titles? You can't go wrong.
I will buy: Pitch Black, Sleepy Hollow, Aeon Flux, Sahara, and Good Night ,and Good Luck. Five Total.
petmic10 07-25-06, 02:41 PM I placed an order with Amazon yesterday for Sahara, Sky Captain, & the Last
Samurai.
davidhoenig 07-25-06, 03:25 PM I'll buy a couple on the 8th. At least 2.
Put me down for six: Animal House, Laura Croft, Lethal Weapon, Constantine, Unforgiven, The Last Samurai
davidhoenig 07-25-06, 10:02 PM Have we decided which vendor to reward with our business yet? I think we should support the format with the retailer who has best supported the format. My vote is on Amazon; they seem to be the best supporter of the format with their prices and selection overall.
I doubt I'm going to be in the minority when I say I feel BB and CC can get bent with their crappy prices and especially BB's poor promotion of the format.
I think the majority are using amazon but its not limited to that since it was expressed that not everyone was favorable of it
CrossRoad 07-26-06, 12:01 AM Put me down for one maybe as many as 3.
awmurray 07-26-06, 06:17 PM Put me down for one maybe as many as 3.
I'll count 1. If this were a Blu-ray thing we could count potential... ;)
Do you think that we can collectively get up to purchasing 1,000 HD disks on the 8th?
I hope so. That would be nice, wouldn't it?
I've got 3 movies; Sahara, Enter the Dragon, & Tomb Raider in my Amazon Shopping cart . May add Pitch Black. Only thing is I don't want to wait until 8/8/06 :( But I will.
awmurray, it seems you got some positive results from your first group purchase of HD DVD.
Let me make a suggestion - the next one needs to be on 11/17/06, the PS3 launch. While PS3 owners will likely buy a movie or two to test out Blu-Ray, odds are after the initial spike sales will plummet much like UMD as gamers spend their money on games.
However, to counter that spike some solid sales on HD DVD's part on the same day would be nice to see. Therefore setting this as the next mass-purchase day would probably yield the most benefit.
ChrisW6ATV 07-30-06, 03:49 AM I goofed and included "Traffic" in my 8/8 purchase list, but it will not yet be out that day, so I will buy Blazing Saddles instead. None of the planned 8/8 purchases stopped me from buying U-571 the other day, or ordering Happy Gilmore and 16 Blocks today.
Me and the wife sat down and went over whats available and to be released by aug 10th to pick our selections for this day. We selected 10 titles and was kinda weirded out this morning to see on amazon some of the Aug 1 release titles still arent even showing with a release date or pre-order selection.
What happened to We Were Soldiers, is it still going to be available on Aug 8th?
Davin_Felth 07-31-06, 12:23 PM What happened to We Were Soldiers, is it still going to be available on Aug 8th?

warlordbb 07-31-06, 01:00 PM I've purchased (almost) every available title on release dates at my local BB (using price matching with Target where appropriate).
I'll try to hold off on the three this week and buy next week but I know I will be buying the 5 worthwhile (which doesn't include the U2 crap for me) titles on 8/8. I'll also go ahead and pick some titles I skipped.
So put me down for:
Four Brothers (Paramount)
The Manchurian Canidate (Paramount)
We Were Soldiers (Paramount)
Aeon Flux (Paramount)

Italian Job (Paramount)
Ray (Universal)
Unleashed (Universal) <- COMBO
Dukes of Hazzard (Warner)

Happy Gilmore (Universal)
Assault on Precinct 13 (Universal)
So 12 Titles granted they are all in stock.
My dad's HTDV should be here by then and he's asked me to pick him up an HD-DVD player and some titles so I'm going to hold off till then to do so.
So put me down (for him) for an HD-DVD player and 20 titles TBD.

That is just from this site.
There are 614 listed including jsil and warlordbb clarifying that he's getting 32 on 8/8/06. I counted "10+" in the poll as 10.
Pretty impressive. Obviously HD DVD sells itself and that is a great sign.
gashog301 07-31-06, 05:45 PM watch with all these orders 3/4 of them are going to be on backorder. Im going to order mine on 8/8 @ 00:01 since I will be at work anyway. I think we might get to 800 movies. I might add one to my order of 2.
Hopefully there wont be to many dropouts.
Brian P 07-31-06, 06:34 PM I'm not sure if this counts but I already have Italian Job, Sky Captain and Sleepy Hollow pre-ordered at amazon. (They're all bunched in the same order so Italian Job is holding the order up.)
WickedEwok 07-31-06, 10:27 PM I'll pick up 7 discs on 8/8 (Tomb Raider, Pitch Black, Manchurian Candidate, Happy Gilmore, Ray, Apollo 13, Enter the Dragon)
I'll make sure my friend (who doesn't visit forums) picks up 3 or 4 discs.
According to DVD Town HD DVD Relase list the following should be available as of today August 1st
Four Brothers
Good Night and Good Luck (DVD Combo)
Manchurian Candidate, The
We Were Soldiers
http://www.hddvd.org/hddvd/
As of this morining on Amazon I'm still not see any of these as available for either purchase or pre-order. All still not even have a release date for these on them.
CaptDS9E 08-01-06, 08:10 AM GNAGl was delayed. The other 3 were on amazon for preorder for the last month, but they arent taking any more orders, as they dont have enough to fill them all.
I ordered WWS and FB and they both shipped yesterday
DeanWink 08-01-06, 09:48 AM Hmmm... I may need to order three titles from Amazon to secure my 10%.
Put me down for "Unforgiven," "Goodfellas" and "Constantine."
doublebogey7 08-02-06, 11:19 AM Put me down for 5 titles:
1. Sahara
2. Sky Captain
3. Tomb Raider
4. The Manchurian Candidate
5. Jarhead
Amazon has now made it very difficult if not impossible to coordinate this. We cannot preorder the discs now, and it wouldn't surprise me if we could not order/buy them on the 8th.
J
Edit: I already ordered Sleepy Hollow. I plan on getting Aeon Flux (for the picture), The Italian Job, and Unleashed.

I updated your entry...
I would say anyone in this position (where Amazon cut them off) could either order other titles as substitutes or they could buy those titles at a B/M store. If you can't order them on the 8th, then Amazon has some supply/demand issues and who knows how long they'll take to sort out?
I'll try Amazon, but it doesn't look hopefull- I may just have to bite the bullet and get them from BB. The crap from Amazon is really annoying.

I believe it was due to high demand (which is very good for HD DVD in general). I found this on another thread:
When I called Amazon yesterday about a price match, I asked the rep about these titles being pulled. She said they only had a certain amount on order and once they had all been preordered, they pulled them off the site because they didn't know if they could get more.
Which means that demand was higher (much higher) than Amazon projected. Great news if this is true (and I believe it is).
Obviously it would be cool if we had something to do with the shortage ;).

Get em to price-match. Very easy.

They won't- wally world and target in my area doesn't carry HD DVDs.

None of them do.
I don't even have a wal-mart or target in NYC and they still price-match.

Which BB are you going to? The BB in Long Island City has a huge selection of HD DVDs. I was thinking of using them next Tues to participate in the coordinated buy (I don't think Amazon will ever sell The Manchurian Candidate to me at this point).
I'm in for 5 or 6 depending on what BB has in stock that day

23rd Street. It's close to where I work.
I printed out the Target ad and plopped it down when I gave them the disc. I said "And I need to price-match this."
She did it immediately. Even had a manager help her with it.
gatti-man 08-02-06, 02:06 PM didnt work for me in austin texas. tried twice. I think it all depends on which store you go to. The official BB policy states that it needs to be a store and they need to have it in stock. Your store is breaking policy so lucky you:)
Mr Ian B 08-02-06, 02:14 PM I had no luck either at the BB by Lakeline Mall here in NW Austin. They said that it has to be priced matched at customer service and when they called and were told they do not have them, BB will decline to price match. So, I left all 3 movies with them to put back. No way, am I paying $29.99 plus tax. I ordered them from Amazon for $19.00 with no tax and free shipping.

I had the same problem. That's why I said it won't work. Been there, done that.
J
If Amazon and/or Paramount don't get their act together, I may bow out of the coordinated purchase. I don't see the point of rewarding incompetence.

Well I think the point is already being made showing that there is a large demand and support for HD.
As for Amazon, as long as I can order these movies on the 8th I'd be content. I'm willing to wait for it if its backordered but being as this is not pre-order and has already been released the ability to order it should be present on the site.
Anyone have a contact number for there? I think I may continually call and complain all week
Count me in for these movies. I'll be getting them from Best Buy
Friday Night Lights
The Last Samurai
We Were Soldiers
John Boy 08-02-06, 04:12 PM I am in for Friday Night Lights

That's my point.
I'm not convinced you will be able to order them when they come out. Right now, you cannot order We Were Soldiers, or Four Brothers.
J
I'm in for 4 from best buy.
David Susilo 08-03-06, 09:09 PM it seems like Amazon also jacking up HD DVD prices. If that's the case then no sale for them.

Well I already ordered 4 of the 7 I planned to wait for.:) However, assuming Amazon gets the paramount stuff working by the 8th, I will sitll probably order 7 titles.
Is it OK to order a pre-release title from amazon on the 8th, or will that not be counted towards that days sales? I wouldn't mind pre-ordering Caddyshack at least, but if it won't count towards a big jump in numbers or something we are aiming for I can try and find a title that's already out that I would want.
Actually Amazon is listing Animal House as having an Aug 15 release date, I thought it was due out on the 8th, so I'm not sure what I would want that's out on or before Aug 8th. I have already purchased the movies I really like, and I hate to buy HD-DVD's just because they are in that format, of movies I don't really care for.

My opinion on your question, others may say different, is that the main point in the joint purchase is to show that there is a demand for HD DVD content from the consumers and that it would be benificial to studios and retailers to increase stock.
That being said, yes I think pre-orders for moview would fall into the category and reach the same goal of showing that there is a large demand for movies
I plan on selecting some pre-orders myself on the 8th, how many yet I havent decided.
I guess awmurray would have to decide if the pre-orders are being counted in his totals to see how many movies were placed on order on the 8th from us.
I'd also be interested in seeing the totals afterwards just to see if everyone actually placed there orders for the amount of movies they claimed they would. I'm sure some have changed there minds by now. Thats one of the reasons I gave a number rather then announce what I will be ordering yet.
Is a pre-order on the 8th counted any differently than a pre-order on the 6th or the 10th for a title not due out until the 22nd? I don't think they count it as sold until it basically ships.
please add another 1 for me, making 3 that I plan to purchase on the 8th.

Amazon does not charge your credit card until your order ships.
Well guys, I couldn't wait for the 8th and purchased these in the last few days. Tried to get Manchurian Candidate but they were out, Italian Job and Aeon Flux weren't there early like they usually are.
Swordfish
Chronicles Of Riddick
Serenity
We Were Soldiers
Training Day
The Bourne Supremecy
Apollo 13
Assault On Precinct 13
Constantine
Friday Night Lights
Goodfellas
The Last Samurai
Syriana
U-571
Amazon does not charge your credit card until your order ships.
BUT, they may use the date of the sale for the listed sales rankings...
ricwhite 08-05-06, 07:56 PM I'll be getting
Aeon Flux
Italian Job
Most likely at Best Buy
I have 8 others ordered from amazon.com with 3 different delivery dates.
Oh, all right. Put me down for U2: Rattle and Hum, Ray and possibly Blazing Saddles.
adidadi 08-05-06, 08:32 PM I LOVE the enthusiasm, but the gross revenue does not even cover a studio exec's 15k service on his Ferrari, much less the profit. I think as early adopters, we are definitely doing our part. I bought a machine and 9 discs and love it so far, until I've seen them all and have nothing to watch;-(
HD DVD studios should steal the old Doritos slogan: "Buy all you want, we'll make more."
Add me to this list, and I'm telling my friends to support this 'cause', too... put me down for 7, and I may go for more, but 7 is what I'm shooting for.
- Blazing Saddles
- Happy Gilmore
- Friday Night Lights
- The Rundown
- Aeon Flux
- Italian Job
- Manchurian Candidate
One more day....
Looking forward to it and starting to make my selections now. I was hoping Amazon would have updated the missing content by now. I'd still like to order from there and see if how much sales rankings may change for the day.
After my order is placed tomorrow, I will then specifiy the count and movies of what I actually ordered
We autta cooridnate some other forms of support such as all calling a specified studio on the same day and requesting HD support...
Still can't order them from Amazon. I'll buy elsewhere.
J
IronCamel 08-07-06, 06:40 PM Is everything still a go?
I'm buying tomorrow regardless, but wanted to make sure everything is still set.
Is everything still a go?
I'm buying tomorrow regardless, but wanted to make sure everything is still set.
Me too. Wish Amazon would add the missing discs. I'll go to BB for Aeon Flux if I have to. Don't want to pay list price though
If Amazon still doesn't have them listed, I may make some of my purchases at Best Buy and Circuit City. It will be good for the B&M stores to see interest anyway.
I will probably pre-order Caddyshack and The Searchers tomorrow, but I am afraid that one or both of these will be incorrectly processed 1080i titles in the same vein as The Perfect Storm, The Fugitive and Enter the Dragon. I'll try and find some current title I don't already own that's already out, but I haven't found any movies I like that much that I have not already purchased (I already have 6 HD-DVD's from amazon and BB).
candyrocket786 08-07-06, 10:13 PM I will be picking up
We Were Soldiers
Italian Job
Tomb Raider
Aeon Flux
I will also be picking up
Aeon Flux - I still go back and forth on this one but hey it is for the good of HD
We Were Soldiers

My wife is going to put the hurt on me

ChrisPC 08-08-06, 12:01 AM It's now August 8th on the East Coast. Any of you going to a Wal-Mart Supercenter right now? :) I will tomorrow.
Davin_Felth 08-08-06, 12:38 AM I'm waiting till midnight pacific time, since that's where Amazon is headquartered. But, I have 6 titles in my shopping cart, and another 2 in a DDD shopping cart ready to go. Just have to figure out where I'm going to buy Aeon Flux. :)
sorry, people - bought Apollo 13 tonight at Wallyworld just after 9pm local time, but that still qualifies as Aug 8th on the east coast - so please forgive me!
I'll also be ordering the others as indicated from amazon - or deep discount DVD to avoid 8.8% WA sales tax...
Let's make a good showing tomorrow, everyone!
suprmallet 08-08-06, 02:39 AM I found Van Helsing and U-571 really cheap and I was able to use an employee discount on top of the low price, so scratch those off my list. I also decided against Apollo 13, as I'm not totally crazy about it. But I'm definitely getting Jarhead and then whatever else catches my eye.
nonametofame 08-08-06, 04:13 AM Just ordered Ray on Amazon. It's estimated to ship today so I'm +1 so far. Still no Aeon Flux available on Amazon, so I'll probably pick it up in store. Won't be paying any more than $20 for it though. All I expect from that movie is to see Charlize in reference HD. I think expecting anything more, i.e. plot, character development, good performances, and I will be sorely disappointed. Might also pick up Blazing Saddles as I rented that from netflix and thought the PQ was fantastic. I'd really like to pick up some more titles, but pretty much already own everything I'm interested in.
xradman 08-08-06, 04:42 AM Just ordered Ray and Syriana from Amazon. I was going to get Aeon Flux, but not available yet.
jasonDono 08-08-06, 06:15 AM Ordered
Ray
Sleepy Hollow
Tomb Raider
Sky Captain
from Amazon
Does anybody else find it hard to find HD DVD's on Amazon? Searching for HD DVD does't find them all. Going to their HD DVD store doesn't find them all. Searching for Ray did not return the HD DVD. I had to search for "Ray HD DVD" to find it.
Okay! Its the 8th!
I ordered Sky Captain and The Rundown (both in stock) from Amazon :)
I also have several titles on pre-order.
Ray from Amazon.
Friday Night Lights and Chronicles of Riddick from Best Buy.
It will be interesting tomorrow to see the totals ordered for today.... I hope not to many back out of there pledges
After reading this morning that New Line is sitting this year out and not releasing LOTR in 06 because they want to sit back and see how sales of HD disks go in the fourth quarter first, I really felt the need to step up to the plate this morning and order as much as I could. Hopefully we can show these studios that these disks are wanted and they can profit by publishing them...
(EDIT: I went back & pre-ordered 2 more, the below reflects the changes)
awmurray I originally pledged ordering 3 - 6 disks. Instead I ordered 18. Lets see who tops that one...

Ya, I had to order 4 titles from dvdempire because amazon still hasnt updated...
ORDERED:
Backdraft, Bourne & Animal House! :D Ordered from Amazon to get the 10% discount on this order, plus the next year too...
But have to wait a month to get 'em... :(
So including my "prepurchase" of A13 last night, jot me down for four movies.
awmurray 08-08-06, 10:51 AM We picked up about 20 people and around 50 discs in the past 12 hours...
Up to 190 people and 755 discs.
wostertag 08-08-06, 10:52 AM Grabbed MDB and Ray from Amazon.
Ordered from Amazon:
Last Samurai
Phantom of the Opera
Also moved 2 HD titles up to next movies on Blockbuster
Are the Searchers or Caddyshack available for pre-order anywhere yet?
Paul Arnette 08-08-06, 10:56 AM I understand that some of you are waiting for Amazon to update certain HD DVD titles that are missing, but I have another question regarding them...
I was under the impression that Amazon would be dropping prices on their Unversal HD DVDs. Last time I looked Bourne and Jarhead were still $23.95. Granted that's still the best price once th 10% is factored in, but I was hoping they'd be further marked down. What gives?
We picked up about 20 people and around 50 discs in the past 12 hours...
Up to 190 people and 755 discs.
I would total it differently. I'm sure what was pledged is not what is gonna actually get ordered from everyone. There are alot of posts of people that didnt wait, changed there minds etc...
Start a new count of just what gets stated as actually ordered today
DaveinTucson 08-08-06, 11:02 AM OK, I'm trying to find some titles to order to support the AVS Forum Purchase day. I own or have Netflixed just about every title released so far that I've wanted to see.
So, I'm loking at pre-orders on Amazon. I'm buying Slither (Oct. 24), even though it's a combo. Amazon has The Interpreter as releasing also on Oct. 24; HighDefDigest.com sez Aug. 22. ANyone know the true status?
My third will be Ray, available now from Amazon. :)
I already pre-ordered Animal House, Traffice, Red Dragon, and Dazed & Confused.
mikey ra 08-08-06, 11:03 AM I originally said I'd only purchase three discs. I actually just ordered five from Amazon:
Army of Darkness
Backdraft
Animal House
Dazed and Confused
Fear & Loathing
barrym71 08-08-06, 11:03 AM Ordered Slither and Unleashed from Amazon.
Ordered Manchurian Candidate from DVD Empire.
Just went to BB. I picked up :
Aeon Flux-mostly for the picture, I probably won't like the movie
Sahara-same as above.
I decided to pass on The Itallian Job, due to complaints on its PQ.
This wasa different than the one I went to a week ago. They had a blu-ray display, but I didn't see a HD DVD display. They only had 1 Sahara left, and HD DVDs looked like they were selling.
J
Went to the St. Petersburg, Florida BB. They had nothing. The drone in the blue shirt said they were all pushed back  I asked why most stuff is priced at full list. I told him I guess BB doesn't want to sell any. He made some stupid comment. I left. Next is DVD Empire and Amazon.
aaron_hinni 08-08-06, 11:17 AM I just ordered these up from Amazon
- Chronicles of Riddick

And these from dvdempire

Can't wait for more release announcements so I can preorder some more. :D

Doug
jrporter 08-08-06, 01:04 PM In honor of AVS day, I managed to run over to BB at lunch... picked up Italian Job and Rundown... not many compared to some but something at least
Davin_Felth 08-08-06, 01:07 PM Wow. After Davin_Felth's list,
I just have no self control when it comes to collecting stuff. ;) :D
I just have no self control when it comes to collecting stuff. ;) :D
Ya even got me beat by 2... I may have to go and get a couple more now to show ya up ;)
Well, I said I'd buy 6 titles: Animal House, Laura Croft, Lethal Weapon, Constantine, Unforgiven, The Last Samurai
I just ordered 11: Sahara, View from Space, Unforgiven, Constantine, The Last Samurai, Aeon Flux, Laura Croft, Fast & Furious, End of Days, Land of the Dead, Army of Darkness
No self control either :D ;)
The last four above are pre-orders. Last night I got Bourne Supremacy at BB. I didn't know there were two titles out that include the in-movie experience (Constantine & Bourne). What a cool feature. Eat your heart out Sony BR. :D
So mark me for 12 titles (4 of which are pre-orders). Totally out-of-control :p
BlackRiderX 08-08-06, 01:53 PM Picked up all of my titles today! :)
awmurray 08-08-06, 01:58 PM I said I'd get 5, but ended up getting 8:

Unforgiven
Sleepy Hollow
Pitch Black

I tried to tally it up but it is a bit difficult. I didnt count when people said they were on there way to go purchase/order something, who knows if theyll actually get them all or not. So I tried to limit it to only the ones that verified they had made the purchase today. Its around 200 movies
chad_cincy 08-08-06, 03:07 PM I picked up my 3 today, for a total of 10 so far. I've only had my HD-A1 for two weeks, but the wife hasn't killed me yet. ;) Actually, she is enjoying it quite a bit too and has picked out 4 of the 10 movies herself.
candyrocket786 08-08-06, 03:13 PM Got my four titles.
My co-workers asked if today was some type of HD-DVD Holiday :D
DaveinTucson 08-08-06, 03:16 PM (AP Newswire, August 8, 2006) Retailers report HD DVD’s flying off shelves
Numerous retailers across the country reported a huge surge in purchases today of HD DVD’s, with many locations reporting they have completely sold out of all HD DVD titles.
“I’ve never seen anything like it!” complained Elmer Fudd, Chief DVD Merchandising Manager for Worst Buy, a leading Consumer Electronics retailer (Reporter’s Note: Correction: The real name of the retailer is “Best” Buy, not “Worst” Buy, as it is commonly referred to) “It’s like, you know, man, we can’t even bring the HD DVD titles out of the back room fast enough” Mr. Fudd continued. “I can’t understand it – we have plenty of Blur-ay titles, but no one will even touch them!” he said, scratching his head. "I read something somewhere that Blur-ay was supposed to be better".
Even on-line DVD retailers such as Amazon.com report brisk sales. “I’ve never seen anything like it” complained Shirley Clueless, Chief Optical Media Merchandiser for Amazon. “The orders are coming in as fast as out servers can handle it. Now, Damnit!, I have to go figure out if we got the god-damn release dates right, if we had the right prices up, and how the hell we got orders for titles we claimed weren’t even released yet!”
Consumers are advised to run – NOT WALK – to their nearest HD DVD retailer and get the titles they want before the all disappear. Disputing the surge in HD DVD sales, Mr. Hu Flung Dung of the Blur-ay Association stated that consumers must be confused or near-sighted to not see the better future potential of Blur-ay. “Consumers never seem to know their ass from a hole in the ground” Mr. Dung stated. “Just wait until we have millions of PS3 BD players in the market – someone will surely want to buy a BD title then”.

Maybe we should do a new poll. The last one was how many do you plan to buy. A new poll, only vote if you bought HD DVDs today, how many did you actually buy? Should we be counting Preorders in these totals?

I would definetly include pre-orders, it was an agreement of sale made today. Plus it meets the same goal that we want which is to show that there is a demand for these titles in the market
David Scott 08-08-06, 03:55 PM I found "Aeon Flux" at my local Best Buy, so it turns out I've purchased a total of 8 now today. When I got to the register the girl at Best Buy said "you know you need a Blu-Ray player to watch that!" She then went on to add "we've been told to tell people that they need a Blu-Ray player because of all the returns". She didn't even know there were two competing formats.
