(you too, M...and I'm waiting for your richly deserved "I told you so...":)

Forgot to tell you, "I told you so". :D Hopefully Lost will provide some incentive to give Alias more of a chance. :) The character stuff really does get very good as it moves along and slows down a bit.

I have the last Lost episode downloaded. I'm both looking forward to watching it and dreading it, because I know they are taking about a 3 month break.

I need to get Netflix again so I can continue The Shield. I finished season 2 awhile back.

I'm digging Heroes more and more. It's definitely the "new Lost" in a way. I just started a show called Jericho the other night that seems to have potential. Very interesting premise.

You were definately right about the strengths of Lost, M. It is a character study first and foremost methinks, and the mystery is secondary. I say that because I've been reading other boards, and there are a lot of complaints about the lack of resolution to any of the puzzles as if thats the only reason to watch. Trying to figure it all out is addicting, but the show is about so much more than just puzzle solving. I'm glad I read your comments about the show before watching-I think you captured the right way to approach it.
I didn't watch it when it came out because I feared the final resolution might be disappointing, if there even was one. Now, it could turn out to be as silly as some kind of dream and I wouldn't feel cheated, I've grown so absorbed in the characters.
And I gotta say, Sawyer is given some of the best lines this side of Joss. Reminds me of Spike.

And just to tie it all together...Jeph Loeb has been signed to do a story arc for the S8 comic-he was a supervising producer for Lost last year.

more comic news:

In terms of where the story will pick up in the comic, Whedon told Entertainment Weekly, “Not that everything is dire and angsty and season six-y, But she's dealing with the consequences of having empowered thousands of girls around the world. She may have closed the Hellmouth under Sunnydale and defeated The First. But evil? Still rampant!'” He added that the characters were still spread out across the globe working to train the new slayers and that the Scoobies would be in the comics but that he plans to introduce them slowly.

Spike and Angel will appear in the comic but as their characters are owned by another company, Whedon says he will be using them sparingly. He also went on to say that we won’t get to find out how they managed to survive the onslaught of demons that they were facing in the final moments of the ‘Angel’ series, saying, ''That's a story for another time, another place.''

Its funny...there is an interview with Joss on the tvguide site. And he again praises the artist, so maybe he sees something were missing, or the pictures we've seen so far don't do the guy justice...
He also says he's doing the 1st 4 and last 4, plus "definetely some in between", with other writers from the series doing some also. Doesn't say much about the storyarc but I read elsewhere it involves the return of an "old enemy". Sounds intriging.
And oh yeah-Joss seems to love Battlestar Galactica. Goes as far as saying it might be his favorite tv show of all time.

He must be a bit fickle. Not long ago he was saying that about Veronica Mars. :D

It's definitely one of the best shows on TV. It's in my current top 5 of this season. Lost and Heroes are my current top 2 favorites of this season. Now, I'm off to watch the latest Battlestar Galactica myself followed by some Highlander (I'm now on season 4) episodes.

Jane Epsenson wrote tonight's(12/8/06) episode...you're probably going to throw your arms up in horror, M, but I think I'll record it and just jump in...it was only 2 years ago I only watched one tv show regularly. Now I'm watching 4 and maybe adding a fifth...plus drooling over a comic book not even out yet...Blame it all on Joss. Makes me relish geekdom...
NNG: Peace? If you can admit that its at least possible to view all 7 seasons of Buffy as a whole without being an idiot, I promise not to try to provoke your anger.(yeah, I admit it, I knew exactly what I was doing:)). We both love this show, methinks its time to bury the stake..er, hatchet.

MTyson
12-08-06, 09:01 PM
Yeah, it's hard to imagine anyone just jumping in during Battlestar Galactica. It's not much different than jumping in right now on Lost. :D It's very serialized. Just watching the show now gives big spoilers from the first season or two, unfortunately

Not long ago I wasn't following more than 4 shows either. In all I am following about 15 shows this season (though two of them haven't started yet) and one has already ended (South Park). One is on dvd though (Highlander).

Lonwolf, you should check out Heroes. It's like a comic book brought to life and it's only getting better as it goes along. It's the new Lost (very serialized and surrounded in mystery though it seems to be resolving a lot). You got guys who can fly, a guy who can stop and travel through time, a girl with an evil alter ego, a guy who can hear thoughts, a guy who can emit radiation, a girl who is invulnerable, a guy who can absorb the powers of other special people, a guy who can go through objects, a guy who can figure out how things work, etc. It's very cool. :D

PS: My best friend has been borrowing my Buffy Chosen collection seasons so hir girlfriend could watch the seasons she hadn't seen. He told me he went to bed and she finisihed season 5 by herself. I asked him what she thought and he said when he asked her she told him she cried for about 20 minutes. lol. I thought that was hilarious considering that she went from thinking the show is stupid to crying for 20 minutes after the season 5 finale. This is why when someone says something negative about the show it feels so meaningless. Most peple who have a negative view have never really given the show a chance. I've seen it proved to me several times already.

SPOILER...!!!!!

agreed.
And MAN, that ending in "The Gift"....! I was at work at my old theater job back in NYC, (interestingly "The Dinner Party" was there with John Ritter who played the infamous "Ted" in Season 2. He LOVED being on Buffy and whenever I had it on tuesday nite's backstage he'd always make a very favorable comment as he walked by to go on/offstage..) when The Gift was played and at the end (with headphones on so no TV sound would go out on stage) I leapt up and I think shouted "NO!!!!!!" I hadn't read any spoilers so I didn't know what was coming. To this day if I just hear that music, (which is also a bonus track on the "Once More..." musical soundtrack I get all teary.

Buffy: "Dawn, listen to me. Listen: I love you. I will always love you. This is the work that I have to do. Tell Giles I... tell Giles I figured it out, and I'm o.k. Give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live... for me."

It took a while for your post about S5 to sink in Dave. I only discovered Buffy on DVD, had never seen a complete episode "live". There are a lot of advantages watching it on dvd: marathan sessions, able to watch when you choose and in the proper mood...but I think what you describe trumps all that. I mean, by the time I saw S5 I knew there were two more seasons to go, and Buffy would survive. Watching it live, with all the shocks Joss had already done previously, it must have been mind boggling...did you see it coming at all? Had word leaked out what was going to happen, and was there even a tiny bit of doubt whether Buffy(the character) would be back? If so, it had to be a tearful moment... any other show one would know she would rise again. But Joss would seem perfectly capable of killing off even the star of the show...god, the wait for season 6 must have seemed an eternity...

MTyson
12-10-06, 03:33 PM
People weren't sure if it was coming back after season 5. I remember SMG saying she was going to quit if it moved to another network, but she changed her mind I guess. If you stayed away from spoilers you were shocked at the ending, especially since it could've been the end of the series. Season 6 was actually the first season I watched on the air and I couldn't wait for it to start. Thinking about it now I can say that at the time it was like waiting for the new "Lost" now times 10. :D

Dave Mack
12-10-06, 04:46 PM
I think when they wrote and filmed S5 it wasn't 100% sure what would happen beyond. Maybe that's why it played so well. Because that could have been it! I wasn't into Buffy as much then as now, (I even named my DOG buffy because I'm such a nerd!) so I wasn't particpating in any forums online or reading too much press so I actually had no idea it was coming!
As much as I love season 6 and like season seven it still would have been the ballsiest movie ever in TV history if Buffy had ended at the end of S5... My hell....

Also, "The Body" is at least to me, the most accurate depiction of the grief, craziness and confusion that happens after a parent dies that I've ever seen. I lost my dad when I was in my 20's (granted not as young as Buffy was supposed to be...) and that epsiode rang so true to me it hits me very hard every time.
And with no music to prompt the emotions, just unbelievable what Joss and the actors accomplished.
That epsiode (and many others) and SMG were robbed of emmy nominations.
oh and btw, John Ritter was an incredibly cool and nice guy!

And thank you for such a moving and inspirational post.

lonwolf615

Its the greatest tv show ever, oink, and even that doesn't begin to cover it...
Agree with your description of The Body, Dave. There have been countless attempts in fiction to describe the impact of the death of a loved one. The Body just shows it, in all its mundane detail, leaving it to the viewer to realize what the characters are going through based on their own experience. For me, he captured just how surreal the days following the death are-life goes on, we still do the same things we always did, we have to do them...and even the most routine actions somehow have a new significance, as if we're doing them for the first time. Everything is the same yet fundamentally different, and its in these everyday details we realize the full impact of our loss. Thats how it was for me anyways, and until I saw The Body I had no idea anyone else had ever felt that way.
It speaks volumes of how good I think this show is to say this isn't even my favorite episode...heck, it might not be even in my top 5. But it is the one I would show to anyone that says Buffy is about "a cheerleader killing vampires". More than any other episode this one captures just how high the stakes are in the Whedonverse. I cannot even begin to imagine anyone not being moved by The Body, whether they liked the rest of the show or not.

Dave Mack
12-11-06, 03:42 PM
exactly. It might not be my personal fave either, I think the musical, Passion, The gift, Hush or many others qualify but I think The Body might be the best showcase of how good the writing, direction and acting can be. Watching The Body is like getting hit in the stomach several times, it's not a pleasant experience but in it's own way it shows you your own emotions and that you're alive. I know that sounds weird but I think it's true.
And it's unique in the fact that I think it's the only episode that shows a vamp attack at the end that is truly as horrifying as it would actually be. No music, and it's not exciting or cool or suspenseful, just realistic seeming. And all Dawn can do at the end is reach out for her mother....

The followup episode where Dawn tries to bring her back (while not considered as a whole in the same league by most...) has one heartbreaking scene when Buffy realizes what Dawn is trying to do and winds up with Dawn confronting Buffy about buffy's lack of emotion while Mom's re-animated body is shambling back in shadow to the door. I wrote this script from watching the DVD as the quote sites didn't have it all...

Buffy: Dawn! You Know this is wrong! You can’t let this happen! Not to Mom.
Dawn: But I need her. I don’t care if she’s…
I’m not like you, Buffy. I don’t have Anybody!
Buffy: What? Of Course you do. You have me!
Dawn: No, I don’t! You won’t even Look at me. It’s so obvious you don’t want me
Around.
Buffy: That’s not true.
Dawn: Yes it is… Mom, died… and it’s like you don’t even care!
Buffy: Of Course I Care! How can you even think that?
Dawn: How can I Not?!? You haven’t even cried! You’ve just been running around like it’s some big chore or something. Cleaning up after Mom’s mess!
(Buffy slaps Dawn across the face, at first angry, then shocked at what she just did)
Buffy: Dawn, I’ve been working… I’ve been busy because I have to.
Dawn: No. You’ve been avoiding me.
Buffy: I’m NOT! …I have to do these things because when I stop… then she’s really
Gone. And I’m trying, Dawn, I’m really trying to take care of things.
And I don’t even know what I’m doing. (Buffy begins to cry)
Mom always knew!
Dawn: Nobody’s asking you to be Mom!
Buffy: Well who’s gonna be if I’m Not?!? Huh, Dawn?!?! Who’s gonna make things
better?!?! Who’s gonna take… care of us?!?
Dawn: Buffy…
(Shadow of re-animated Joyce passing window, heading towards front door, unseen
By Buffy and Dawn)
Buffy: I didn’t mean to push you away! I didn’t! I just… couldn’t let you see me!
Oh God, Dawn… I don’t know what we’re gonna do. I’m scared.
Dawn: Buffy.

(Knock on Door. Buffy spins around towards door and her eyes widen)

Buffy: Mommy?
Dawn: Buffy…
Buffy: Mom.

(Buffy runs to open door and Dawn rips up Joyce’s photo. Buffy opens door,
Nobody is there. Buffy turns toward Dawn and finally begins breaking down)

Dawn: It’s okay…
(Buffy hugs Dawn and they collapse to the floor. Buffy fully crying now, releasing
All the days of grief….)
Dawn: It’s okay…

FADE OUT

Boy, that reads well, doesn't it? After a while one tends to take the excellence of the writing for granted. Reading it puts a whole other spin on it-damn thats good.
And that episode is a perfect example of just what was so special about Buffy. You think you know what youi're watching(in this case a version of The Monkey's Paw) and then it suddenly goes someplace else that makes you rethink everything you've just seen. There are so many episodes that on the first viewing I almost skimmed through thinking it was something I had seen before, a typical tv plotline. Lie To Me and The Zeppo come to mind as examples of this. It was only the second time through that I realized how much I had missed the first time and that there was nothing cliched or typical about the episode at all.
One can skim the surface of Buffy and have a pretty good time, which is probably how it survived so long in tv's wasteland. But if you care to dig deeper, wanting more, its there waiting for you.
Ooh boy...I just went to check the title of the episode (Forever), and in doing so saw who wrote it...

Buffy actually beat 64 dachshunds here in the Bay Area!

She won 2 of her 4 races in San Diego including the semi-final and the "test run" for the final, (then needed extra races for the TV coverage!) and by the last race even though she had just won the 2 previous races and was the fastest by a longshot to everyone overall including the judges, she just put on the brakes halfway through the last race. I think she was done. Like "why do I keep doing this?!?!?" Was a ton of fun though and we rode in the San Diego Bay balloon parade and were on TV.

And kudos to you for having such a wonderful animal...I don't know for sure what I'm most impressed with-her winning races or your attitude towards her sudden retirement...the way you describe it, it sounds like Buffy had a "whats the point" moment and couldn't come up with a good enough reason to continue..sort of a 6th season moment ...
And if it doesn't come across, let me add I love dogs. To have one do so well in competition, and then stop off at Buffy's house on the way home, sounds pretty much like the perfect vacation. Great going guy!

Actually, to be honest I'd probably not even give it a look without TM being involved. Adding Nathan also whet my interest, but the cincher is Amy...heck, I'd watch a remake of 3's Company if she was in it...

Not going to happen, of course. ZERO jiggle factor . . .

(but she is a cutie) :D

that's how Tim described it on a Drive blog-since ended-but there's a link to a newer website by the same people:

A secret, illegal, underground road race can be anything from Cannonball Run to The Game to North By Northwest to "Magnolia-on-wheels." Ours is all those things.
another interesting quote:
it can be as comedic and whimsical as Wonderfalls, but go as dark and operatic as Angel.

Well, Tim has never been big on false modesty.:) I'm still in awe at the fountain of info you are, Roger. Thanks again for sharing...you got any feelings on the show, bad or good?
