okay i just bought a used direct tv h10... I want to watch off air hd channels... (i don't have a sat dish). I just want to see local channels in high def.

on a diff thread someone said you have to tell the box that you are not using a dish. how do i do that? the setup for the antenna is greyed out.

please help!!

Re-run the guided setup on the box.

After doing a little research, you don't need the unit activated but you need it hooked to a dish pointed to the 101 sat for it to boot properly for initial set up and occasionally when it's rebooted or it reboots itself.. If you don't want to get a dish, sell it and buy any older Directv receiver and you won't have this problem.

i'd rather not have to sell this one and get another one.... can anyone point me in a direction to get around this problem? hacks?

You need a dish then, there are no other work arounds or hacks...

From personal experience I can tell you that the Samsung SIR-360 is one that will work without a sat feed.....there are others that will do the same.

/me bangs head against wall

I bought one of these on eBay for $55 and hooked it up only to get to this point.

EDIT:

I bought a D* Triple LNB on eBay as well.

I hope it all works when I hook it up.

As long as you properly aim the dish to receiver the 101 sat it should. Personally I'd just get a different receiver vs mounting a dish on my house...

I am not going to mount it; this setup is for my garage.

Ok, you still need the dish mounted in a way you can aim it at the 101 sat and have it that way for any time the H10 loses power, hangs and needs to be restarted, etc. It needs the dish every time you power it up, not just once to get OTA configured.

I will just try to point it out the garage for now, then try to keep it on. If it loses power or resets I'll drag the dish outside for a power up :D

I may end up getting a tripod for it, but I don't want to mount it outside the garage unless I get the D* service - which I may if Comcast doesn't bring NFL Network and ESPN2 HD to Houston in January.

Surprisingly this worked ;)

I assembled the dish and pointed it out the garage. Nothing the first time, pointed it in a different direction and got a signal. LOL

Yakapo,

I just bought the same receiver (H10) used on eBay and I am having the same problem trying to set it up to just watch local over-the-air HD channels. Did you find another solution other than buying a dish just to set it up?

Thanks.

Matt, do you need an access card to get the local hdtv channels on a H10? Thanks, Mike.

You need a dish for it to boot, no way around it.

... i little off topic...

But will the H10 work with current directv service?

I just got it off ebay for like 10 bucks and i think the only reason they go for so low is that they are no longer compatible with the HD sat service?

If HD doesn't work with this box anymore will it work with regular directv broadcasts?

Thanks.

The H10 will work with the current MPEG2 HD programming just like any other older D* HD receiver. It will not work with the new MPEG4 sats that supply HD locals and should be offering expanded national HD content later this year.

Will it work without adding HD service to my account ?

Thanks for your response.

Yes, you just won't get the HD channels the HD package gives you.
