View Full Version : XBMC remote Qustion
I have tried every search whether here, on google, and Xbox scene and cannot get an answer to my question. I have no knowledge of programming and this could be why I can't get my answer either.
Anyways,
Got an original xbox and want to get it modded. I think I am going to go with xecueter 3. I was told that you cannot navigate through XBMC with the DVD ir remote using the left, right, up, down arrows and that navigation would have to be done using the wireless gaming joystick. Is this true? If not does the dvd remote have the functionality to do this out of the box or is this a mod? If a mod then how or where I can lead the person that is going to mod my box?
Thanks,
Chad

not true. I have had a modded xbox for many years now and use the xbox remote/dongle with xbmc on a daily basis. i modded mine with the xecuter lite about 4yrs ago...
Thomas J. Coyle 07-20-06, 03:41 PM cnacht,
PLincoln is absolutely right.
The DVD remote works fine with XBMC.
I have modded my XBOX with the X3IR kit and am able to turn my XBOX ON and OFF with the DVD remote.
The only problem I had with the X3IR kit was the need to shorten the mod chip boot select pulse width from 200ms to 100ms otherwise the DVD remote "select" button would always boot up the MS Dashboard and not my Evox Dashboard.

TCIII
So what your saying is that if I get the DVD remote with IR dongle, I will be able to navigate XBMC with the remote in similar fashion to using the remote to navigate Windows Media Center edition.
If this is true, I cannot wait to get mine set up.
Thanks for making my day.

yes
Thomas,
How difficult was the X3IR kit to install? I bought my Xbox pre-modded and love it but the only thing that's missing for me is that ability to turn it on/off from the comfy confines of the couch.
The mod doesn't happen to support discrete on/off does it?
Derek K. 07-21-06, 09:55 AM The easy version of the kit is very easy. No soldering required. It does have discrete codes, and if you get v2 and the programming cable, you can customize the codes.
Thomas J. Coyle 07-21-06, 10:17 AM mebby,
The X3IR version is not easy to install.
It requires soldering to the under side of the motherboard.
Also, it is really designed to be mounted in the X3 custom front panel.
One draw back is that the OFF command is messed up. It should require pushing the "0" button four times, but does it with one push!
Regards,
TCIII
Derek,
Can you point me in the right direction for the easy version? I searched on Google but came up with nothing...
claydough2k 07-23-06, 10:30 AM I agree that hitting 0 once is unacceptable. I wrote to the XIR people (person) and he said that the new XIR v2 (which is in beta, but available to order) will support programming so that you can pick any combination to turn it off. I ordered the easy version, but it doesn't ship until tomorrow.
Here is the URL for the one I got (easy version):

Other than that, I just got my Xbox with the Xecuter X3 working great. I am using the Harmony 880 remote. I am as happy as a pig in....well, you know. ;)
-Clay
I'm using the Harmony 880 as well and it works great with XBMC once you get it set up. I'll try the XIR product and hopefully I'll be good to go from here on out.

I have been trying to get a good setup for the XBMC and the Harmony 880. What device profile did you start with? Do you know if there is a way to "share" your 880 profile for the XBMC device?
claydough2k 07-24-06, 10:00 AM I just used Microsoft XBox. I think it labels it as Game Console (with DVD).
I don't know a way to share 880 profiles. Sorry.
I did the same as claydough2K. For whatever reason it didn't have any of the buttons mapped so I had to manually add each button. It only took a few minutes. Works great now.
claydough2k 07-25-06, 09:37 AM Extactly...the buttons weren't mapped on mine so I had to select all of the buttons via the pulldowns. Weird.
I was looking through the keymap.xml file and I think I saw where you can assign certain buttons to go directly to My Videos, My Pictures, or My Music which is pretty cool.
With the Harmony 880 what this translates into is the ability to have an activity that says "Watch DVD" and have it go straight to your DVD library in XBMC which is pretty wife/kid friendly.
I may set this up. You could either assign a standard button that is already on the remote or you could set up your own using the advancesettings.xml file to capture IR signals.
I have the XIR v2 kit and the program cable. I haven't tried it yet, but supposedly you can assign a non-Xbox DVD button for on and another one for off. That way you have full remote functionality and descrete on/off buttons. I think all you need is another remote to train the XIR v2 chip and the harmony 880.

Hey claydough2k or mebby, could one of you guys post a screenshot of your button layout for the 880 (where you manually added each button)? Some are easy enough to figure out, others not so easy.
I am using the X3IR and having very little luck so far.
Thanks!
I tried to attach screenshots but it wasn't working. Tell me how to do it and I'll load them up. Or PM me with your email address and I'll just email them to you.
claydough2k 07-27-06, 11:21 AM You can view mine here:

I added a couple of lines to the universalremote section for page up/down, queue and fullscreen.

Has anyone tried the xir easy kit v2 beta yet ?
I need to have discrete codes fron on/off as the current IR codes are the same as my RCA amplifier ! If it does do discrete codes can I have them for on/off as well as other things like volume etc....
Do I need to order the usb programming cable to have all this work ?

shinnlly 08-11-06, 09:19 PM I had to buy a serial cable for mine. That was the only way to get the included PC program to see the IRmod on the xbox
land_down_under 08-11-06, 10:55 PM Thanks shinnl :)
I can't make my 880 work with XBMC
land_down_under 08-12-06, 05:38 AM I have the 520 - just use Game Console - Microsoft Xbox from the database. Simple really.
shinnlly 08-12-06, 09:24 AM Checkout this thread. You have to do a little bit of setup.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=701461
I had Xbox dvd remote/dongle. The remote came with the dongle worked fine. Then I bought Harmony 880 and use Game Console - Microsoft Xbox from the database but the Harmony does not work with my XBMC (dvd remote still works fine). Mine is modded with X3.
shinnlly 08-18-06, 12:11 PM The link I posted above points to this thread, which was stupid on my part. On the other hand, this thread contains the answer. I will expand on what is said above.
The Harmony website does have the option for selecting the XBOX, but it only maps a couple buttons. You have to manually setup the majority of them. There are links above that go to screenshots of the way others have setup their 880.
By the way - I did end up playing aroudn with the keymap.xml file and I've been able to do some pretty cool things with my 880. I've assigned activities that go directly to my DVD Library, Weather, Xbox Games (on Hard Drive), and my Pictures.
So now I use the main activity screen on the 880 for going directly to any of these areas. Plus I've got custom buttons (on the LCD) for Videos, Weather, and Pictures that allow you to jump back and forth.
It's pretty cool once you get it all set-up and it's now more wife and kid friendly than ever.
shinnlly 08-23-06, 03:18 PM Hi mebby. Can you post the more interesting parts of your keymap.xml file? I got my 880 up and running with your help. My next step was to start tweaking this file.
Thanks!
I'm in China for the next few weeks but I think I can connect remotely to my home machine and then pull th keymap.xml file off my Xbox via FTP and I'll post it here. The firewall in our office won't allow me to connect through Remote Desktop Connection so I'll have to wait until I get back to the hotel tonight to do it.
I had one benefit though that helped make it work for me - I have an old Pronto TSU2000 sitting around that I used to teach me 880 the correct codes. There is a CCF somewhere that I picked up that basically had all the IR codes that can be used with XBMC so I picked a few random ones and put them in my keymap file and then used the Pronto to teach them to my 880 and it worked like a charm!!
If you don't have a Pronto then I can send you the hex codes for each IR code that you can then email to Logitech tech support and have them upload the codes for you.

mebby, I do have a pronto and I would be very interested in getting my hands on this... I am needing the "back" command among other things.. I really did not want to go out and purchase the DVD remote if I did not have to. I am using the Xbox 360 Harmony Remote and I am sooo close to getting it all programmed...
Thanks in advance for anything you can share!

Scott,
Somehwere there is a ccf file that you can download that gives you all the RCA codes that the Xbox will recognize. I cannot, for the life of me, remember where I downloaded that file or I would point you to it. I'll keep looking and when I figure it out I'll respond back. But basically, it is just a very simple CCF with buttons numbered 001 through something like 500. What you do is you modify your keymap.xml file to use the buttons (001 through 500) to do whatever it is you'd like for them to do.
You'll have to read up a little bit in the manual abou the keymap file but it's pretty simple. For me, I just wanted to have universal buttons to switch directly to My Videos, My Pictures, etc so that I could set up activities to go directly to these so that my wife could simple press the "DVD Library" activity on our remote and it would take her straight to the My Videos section of XBMC. And since I have My Videos set up to go straight to the right network share for our DVDs she's all set. To do this I simply modified the keymap.xml file as follows:
<universalremote>
<obc10>XBMC.ActivateWindow(MyVideos)</obc10>
<obc15>XBMC.ActivateWindow(MyMusic)</obc15>
<obc20>XBMC.ActivateWindow(Weather)</obc20>
<obc30>XBMC.ActivateWindow(MyPrograms)</obc30>
<obc35>XBMC.ActivateWindow(Home)</obc35>
</universalremote>
I did this in the universal remote section b/c I wanted it to apply no matter where I was in the XBMC structure. But the way the xml file is structured you'll see that you utlimately have infinite ways in which you can modify it - just be careful that you're not canibalizing a code from another section of the file.
In the manual it will tell you all the commands that you can program.
Let me know if you need any help.
OK - I just found the link to the CCF file to use that has all the RCA codes. Like I said, just load this CCF into your Pronto, modify the keymap.xml file to point the commands to whatever RCA code you want to use and then teach the 880 the codes using the pronto and then you'll be good to go.

So what do you need in order to use the Harmony 880 with XBMC? Do you just need the original DVD remote kit, or do you need the 3.0 Xecuter chip? Mine has the 2.6 Xecuter chip, but I'd love to use an 880 with it...
Scotty6595 08-31-06, 01:29 PM Thanks for the file mebby... I'll check it out tonight!

You'll at least need the IR sensor that plugs into one of the controller ports. I bought my Xbox premodified and they had already put this on there so I don't know if it comes with the remote or what but I'm guessing that it does.
Anyway, once you have the IR sensor all you have to do is add the Xbox to your devices on the Logitech web page and then set-up your commands. For some strange reason none of the keys are mapped when you set it up so you have to select the appropriate command for every single button. It's easy, but I'm just not sure why the buttons aren't mapped by default.
My 880 works great with the Xbox.
calibos 09-01-06, 10:03 AM Can anyone confirm whether I've got this straight.
To control an xbox with XBMC you either need the official dvd remote that comes with a remote dongle that plugs into a joypad port.
You can also use a Media centre remote, a spare 360 media remote or a learning remote such as a Harmony but you still need the joypad IR dongle so in effect you must buy the official xbox dvd remote whether or not you use the remote that came with it or one of those mentioned above.
None of the above will switch on or off an Xbox however??
For that you need the X3IR which must be connected internally and it has its own IR sensor which one has to mount on the front of the xbox?? Can you use the X3IR on a soft modded xbox or can it only be used in conjunction with a hardware mod

Yes, you need an IR sensor to receive the signals regardless of which remote you use. Although, you can buy after market sensors the official xbox remote kit is the most reliable (I wouldn't recommend the others. If you have a toys R us around you they were closing out the remotes recently for $1.50)
You will need an X3IR or similar item to turn the xbox on (you can turn the box off in XBMC). There are several different flavors, but all of them require you to mount a second IR sensor (I have a halo case so I was able to keep the sensor on the inside so you don't see it). I can't speak for the other models but the XIR (not to be confused with the X3IR) will let you program other remote codes if you get the V2 AND the programmer ($4-5 more). It is a solderless mod that took me about 15 mintues to set up including programming.
K
Ja Phule 09-01-06, 07:18 PM The Xbox Media Center Extender Kit comes with the same IR dongle. The remote is much nicer than the regular remote and I think it has more buttons/command. I was able to get my media center extender remote for $30 but it seems a little harder to find nowadays.
calibos 09-09-06, 08:15 PM KupermanP
Have I got the following straight? Both the X3IR and the XIR are similar but the X3IR connects to an Xecutor mod chip and as well as the usual remote functions, it also enables switching on or off the hard-mod at the touch of a button. The XIR on the other hand does not require a modchip and can be used with a soft modded Xbox. It does all the normal remote functions as well as ON/Off.
When you say its programmable. Do you mean that in addition to ON/OFF, normal xbox remote functions it can be programmed to control other aspects of the the xbox or does programmable mean you can change the code that needs to be sent for ON/OFF?
Have I got that right? Looks like the XIR could be the one for me. Can it only be ordered from the makers website. Its just their E-Shop website looks a bit simple and/or amatuerish. Is it safe?

Good information all.
Now: What's the easiest way to map the volume keys on my Harmony 520 to the volume control in XBMC?
Thanks.

I have the 880 set up to work with the xbox just fine, it works in XBMC and everything... But i cannot for the life of me get it to work right with the X3IR and the 880.
When I hit the activities button and hit play xbox it turns on everything except the xbox.. and when I hit help it doesnt give me an option to turn on the xbox it just says "ensure that the xbox is turned on"
When I hit the select button by it self under devices -> xbox it turns the system on fine and when I hit the 0 button several times it turns off just fine.. but I cannot get it to work right when I go through the activities.
I think I have everything set up properly it just doesn't want to work right.
Please help, Thanks

kupermanp 02-11-07, 09:25 PM I am in the same boat. As far as I can tell you can't instruct the Harmony to turn the Xbox on because it "knows" the xbox can't be turned on. I think it can turn the box off.

I had this problem too.
IIRC I went into adjust setup for device (might have been activity) Sorry I can't remember that well Did this last year. Anyway the harmony Xbox default is that it doesn't know you have an XIR so it sets no code for on/off. You have to go into setup and tell it how to turn on ie Pressing Select. Sorry I haven't access to my Harmony and Software right now or I could give you exact instructions.
This did not work for turning off however for some reason. How I got around that was setting a 'When Leaving this activity' press 0 command.
It is possible to get this working reliably because mine works 100% now. If I have pointed you in the right direction and you figure the rest out yourself then great. If you still cant get it to work I'll give you exact instructions when I get access to me Harmony and home PC.

Hi,
Sorry to dig up an old thread but I was wondering if you can help me out with this. I uploaded the ccf to my TSU-3000 and modified the keymap file to include a "page up" and "page down" function so that I can breeze through my list of mp3's.
According to XBMC, these are the obc's for these functions:
string dvd remote mce remote obc#
channelplus N/A CH/PG + 45
channelminus N/A CH/PG - 44
Based on this, I added the following to the keypad.xml file:
<universalremote>
<obc45>channelplus</obc45>
<obc44>channelminus</obc44>
</universalremote>
When I press the corresponding ccf button (045 or 044) I get nothing. For reference/sanity, I tried the "play," "stop" and some others - nothing worked.
I noticed that the learned codes for "play" etc... were quite different from the codes in the ccf file.
Am I missing something? Please help and thanks in advance!!!
Bob
