View Full Version : Bar Rail?
I'm looking for typical bar rail and have found some locations on the internet, but I would rather buy local so I can see the wood grain & finish in person before I buy. Online it's about $12-16/LF in 6, 8, or 12 foot sections of Maple. I finally found it at Chic Lumber but they want $29/LF and the lengths are random depending on what the supplier has on hand at the time of the order. Has anyone ordered online and happy with their purchase? Where did you buy it at?
Thanks!
r00ster 07-20-06, 11:18 PM I am going to buy mine from Rockler.com but they have a store here in Denver where I saw them at as well. They only had the maple in stock and I want cherry. However I have purchased from Rockler many times and have every confidence in them.

They are right down the street from me. I know they have cherry and oak bar railing, but don't know if they have maple. They have some extremely exotic hardwoods. I was a kid in a candy store when I was there. :) Let me know if I can help out. I don't mind giving them a call if you want. I am also willing to go hand pick your goods if you need me to.
Good luck
Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the help. I couldn't find the bar rail on Rockler. I'll have to keep searching.

The rail you have in your bar construction pics is exactly what I'm looking for. This is where you got it? I called them up and if it's the same, they are CHEAP! $6.81/LF! I talked to Dave and they are really cool to work with. He's suppose to fax over a profile for me to view. He kindof chuckled when I said I was in St. Louis, so I hope shipping isn't an issue...
chinadog 07-21-06, 11:49 AM Randy,
Did they have have lengths greater than 8 feet? Rockler only shows 6 and 8 feet. I could probably go there the check though. I also should check with the place I got the rest of my molding.
My cabinets should be delivered on Sunday and installed Monday. I think I'm going to do granite on the cabinets, but do a maple wood bar top. I'll need to match the stain, but I think I know a place that can do that for you.

chinadog 07-21-06, 12:01 PM Well, I just called Mouldings Unlimited (http://www.mouldingsunlimited.com/) which is where I got my stain grade crown/base molding for the HT room and they carry a bar rail. Its just not listed on the website. Not sure of the stock since the guys left for lunch. I may take a ride up there tomorrow or next weekend. It's about 20 miles away.

Neuner,
Yes, this is where I got my bar railing. They are VERY cheap! Did they have the maple???

Bud,
Yes they do have longer lengths. They are standing on end and when I looked up, I swear they were at least 10 feet or maybe longer.

McDaniels bar rail comes in 10 & 12' lengths - And it came in Maple!
chinadog 07-21-06, 12:58 PM Cool, good to know. Thanks guys. They may be a backup source for me.

Received a fax of the rail profile:
http://www.h-i-forum.com/images/barrailprofile.jpg
It is everything I'm looking for, but the shipping cost is really high. They stated it's because UPS charges more for anything over 8' in length. But, if I get 20LF, that's $6/LF - Combined with the cost of the rail, it's still cheaper than buying locally.
This profile also allows for ease of construction compared to the others. The bottom of the rail rests on 3/4" sub base and the top rests on 3/4" top with no spacing between the two.
r00ster 07-21-06, 04:09 PM The largest Rockler has is 6' here is the link: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=5762

Neuner,
It's great that all you need is two 3/4 layers. it makes installation easy, unless your second layer is less than 3/4 i.e. tile etc. I thought that the shipping of large lengths would be high, but as you said, the LF costs may make it a no brainer. Don't stop looking locally, you may be able to find something close by.
Are you going to get two 10 footers?

I still haven't heard back from another local subcontractor, so I'll have to bug him again tomorrow. I was wondering the other day if McDaniels would cut the pieces down to the length I need and then maybe the shipping wouldn't be so high. The longest piece I need is approx 7-8'. I'll have to call & find out. They're very nice especially for going through so much trouble for a little order.
HeyNow^ 07-25-06, 07:46 AM I'm sure they would do everything they can to accomodate your request. Don't forget to post some pics of your installation!
Good luck.
I don't want to rain on the parade, but I just thought I'd point something out. I built a bar in my last house when I finished the basement and had exactly this kind of bar railing. My bar top and railing was all done in hickory and it was beautiful, though the custom fabricator complained vigorously on how hard the hickory turned out to be. Said he went through every blade in his shop. Anyway...
Yeah, it looks beautiful and has that authentic bar look. However... we found it to be extremely impractical. It is very massive and gets in the way of everything. I have mentioned this to others fabricators since then and they have said they have found the same thing with many people who do this. Many say it turned out to be impractical. Perhaps some others will have different experience, but I'm planning granite on the bar I'm building in my new basement now, with no massive rail.
Paid $11 linear ft. for Red Oak bar rail locally last summer.
Something that visible I would hand pick the grain, color and, shade.
Call these guys

They have everything else but don't know if they'll sell just the rail or not. I know they'll custom make pretty much anything. I had them make the stools and bar height tables for my basement.

I FINALLY found a local place, St. Charles Hardwood. It is very inspirational walking into their display room. They actually had about 4-5 different styles of rails...IN-STOCK! They have what I want at $9.10/LF and they will custom cut to any size so I don't have much waste, and I can hand pick the rail.
I don't need the rail just yet, even though it looked so beautiful I wanted to snatch it up right away :D . I at least know where I'm getting it and how the top needs to be constructed which will help me move on. I've clad the bar recently and updated pics can be viewed through the link in my signature.
Haven't taken a look at your progress lately. Everything's looking outstanding. That's going to be a really nice space when you get finished.

FINALLY have the bar rail installed. Most of the time took getting the actual rail sent. The supplier didn't have enough in stock and they were waiting for new stuff to be milled - Problem was that it was the last of their priorities :(
Took my time installing it so that every cut was almost perfect and everything fit before locking it in place. I'm in the middle of polyurethaning the top & will post pics when done. The poly coats are really bringing a nice color & shine to the wood!

Don't you just love the feel of that bar rail after it's sanded? Like a baby's butt, huh? Nice job. You are really going to enjoy it!

HeyNow^ 04-02-07, 07:48 PM Oh my! that is unbelievable! What did you finally decide to use on the top?? I have to do that to mine!
5harkology 04-03-07, 10:10 PM Very nice. What did you coat the bar rail with to match the sheen of the epoxy?
Thanks, you can read my search for the top coating in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=818487).
I had initially started using Helmsman Polyurethane for everything including the bar rail, but it was too thin for the top. After 3 coats I used the Envirotex Lite (http://www.eti-usa.com/consum/envtex/envlite.htm) for only the wood floor top.
buckrogers71 04-05-07, 10:06 PM very nice. Makes me want to redo mine. :D

Wow! That is Beautiful!...How much would you say this cost overall?
Phisheva 04-25-07, 03:55 PM Hi there! This forum has been a great help. I am building a basement bar. I ended ordering the bar rail from McDaniels hardwoods. They are right near me. They are great.
I am going to be getting ready to cut it soon and the one thing I dont know how to do is build a jig so I can get a good cut with my mitre saw. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Wow! That is Beautiful!...How much would you say this cost overall?
I was just going over this with my family & guests this past weekend.
For the bar top itself:
I used one full sheet of 3/4" mdf board at around $30.
One full box of oak hardwood flooring $80 from Lowes.
Bar rail including shipping came to $210.
1 Ga of Helmsman Poly for Rails & remainder of bar $35.
5 of 1 Quart Envirotex Lite at $134.
3 tubes of PowerGrip Adhesive for the wood flooring $15.
3 eight-foot pieces of 4" Maple for the back of the bartop. I milled the contours myself. Mat'l price $20.
Total ~$524. At 26SF for the wood floor area that's $20/SF for material.
Having put it all together, I guess I don't see it like everyone else. I see all of the slight imperfections, etc. but it was enjoyable having all of my family oohing and ahhing over it.
NeoOiler 05-01-07, 04:45 PM Man..everyone is gonna hate me. i cut up about 10' of the bar rail when I tore down my bar.
Side note, does anyone need about 10' of brass railing as well as the supports that attach it to the floor and the bar? I have it left over.
Ryan
I could use it - but unfortunately I live in Indiana... lol...
GO OILERS!
NeoOiler 05-04-07, 02:43 PM Oilers werent impressive this year. Yeah its 2 sections one is about probably 7' and the other is 3' Too bad.

No they were not impressive, indeed... But I think last year kinda made up for the previous crappy seasons. If not for the playoffs I would never see the Oilers play - American TV stations typically won't show games with Canadian teams if there are US teams playing that same night.
NeoOiler 05-18-07, 11:54 AM Yeah, it was pretty dismal (sp?) around here this year. Especially when you only win like once in the final two months of the season. Our G.M. better have some tricks up his sleeve come free agent time, or there will be a lot of pissed off people here in Edmonton. He didnt even come down to ice level the night Messiers jersey was retired, oh yah the day Ryan smyth was "traded". He thought it was safer to be up in the rafters out of site.HAHHA

tank3467 05-18-07, 01:59 PM I made my own bar rail using pine. It cost me about twelve dollars and Im quite happy with the way it turned out.

HeyNow^ 05-18-07, 02:21 PM Nice job Tank. Do you have any larger pics? I'd like to see the Bar top detail, it looks impressive.
tank3467 05-18-07, 03:11 PM I didnt realize how small they were I will get some bigger pics up later.
tank3467 05-19-07, 12:39 AM Okay I was going to post more pictures but for some reason my post count is now down to 3 and I cant post pictures again.
Tank,
Did you ever get the larger pictures of your rail? Anxious to see your bar rail.
chrisauman 03-07-08, 05:17 PM I work with a wood working shop in Ohio (Willoughby) (By Cleveland) that does excellent work. The shop is called Rino's Woodworking and the URL to their site is rinoswoodworking . com - I believe they provide free shipping too - although I'm not sure what you need to order before you get that.
I hope this helps!

HeyNow^ 03-07-08, 06:26 PM dead link.....don't trouble yourselves.

The link seems to be working.
I called McDaniel's Harwood today, and they are by far the cheapest $6.62/lf. They said they would bring it to me for $44. I live just over 100 miles from them. Shipping was going to cost me an arm and a leg because I need a 10' piece.
I ordered my bar rail from this site:
http://www.tapeease.com/Home.htm
I chose them because they had several different profiles for the bar rail and it was offered in Mahogany.
Price per foot of mine was 13.75
chrisauman 04-22-08, 12:32 PM I believe Rino's is now offering free shipping on bar rail (http://www.rinoswoodworking.com/blog/bar-rails/) if you're interested. Very nice work by the way. I'd love to see more picture here.
Crpntr4u 01-22-10, 12:29 PM I have built a few bars for some customers of mine, and I get the bar rail through a company locally here in Peoria called Specialty Wood Works of Peoria. We just finished a bar at a golf course club house using all components that they had made.

Crpntr4u 01-22-10, 12:38 PM here is a pic of a custom bar top and bar rail I also got from Specialty Wood Works of Peoria. This was installed in a basement bar.

If anyone could use a 5ft and a 3ft piece of maple rail in Metro Detroit send me a pm. I tore down my bar and rebuilt so this is what was left over. No stain or poly on it. No shipping either just local pickup only. I would rather see someone use this than go in my fireplace.
