I am a current owner of a DVD recorder with HD.

I am looking for another DVD recorder with the few bugs as possible.

DVD ram is a nice to have but not a necessary to have.
Would like a record pause feature not a necessary to have

I want a recorder in which the finalized disks will work in any other recorder.

I don't want a recorder that is sensitive to CPRM like the Toshiba;s from what I hear

Appreciate all opinions.

Thanks,

Greg

I don't want a recorder that is sensitive to CPRM.I doubt you'll be able to meet that requirement.

Other than that, have you looked at the Pioneer 640?

Yes there have been reports of over-sensitivity to the so-called Broadcast Flags (CGMS-A) for some Toshiba models. Certainly you don't want to be prevented from copying something that is allowed to be copied. My comment was more to say that you will not likely find a model that allows copying of something that is flagged to disallow copying.

Under $200 for an HDD-DVD Recorder is asking a lot by the way. Under $400 would be more realistic, unless you don't mind the noname brands, and also don't mind wondering if your discs will be be burned successfully each time you try.

Even the Polaroid from Walmart is listed on their web site at $220. Under $200 is unrealistic. Any DVD recorder sold today will be compliant with CPRM.

Well you certainly won't get a HDD model for under $200.00, I am not sure what the Panasonic DMR-ES25 is going for, but I found the DMR-ES15 here for under $160.00

Don't know what the S&H will bring it too, but could it be $40.00? So you might still stay under $200.00 yet.

However, not to be rude to you, but I really don't even like to recommend people getting a DVD Recorder without a HDD in it. If you ever have used one, you would never go back to doing without it.

What I used to have is two recorders with no HDD, and I would record on one using DVD-Ram, edit out commercials, and send it to the other one on DVD-R. Now that I have the Pioneer DVR-640H, I can do all of that in one unit...and...at high speed where a two hour transfer (from HDD to DVD) can sometimes only take 15 minues.

If for no other reason alone but your valuable time being saved, save up and wait until you can get one with a HDD and get the Pioneer 640. Otherwise, go with the Panasonic I mentioned.

I agree with what you say. I currently to have a DVD recorder with HDD. I have a credit at Amazon and was looking to stay under a certain budget.

The Polaroid is interesting but why would they make a recorder that does +R when most people record in -R. This recorder is tempting and I like the fact that you can upgrade the hard drive in this model We'll see .

Thank you for you opinions.

The Polaroid records on -R/RW also (pg 46 of manual).

I've been thinking about getting one myself...for about half the price of a Pio and more than half of one of the new Panys, I could get two Polaroids! I think it might be a good choice for someone on a budget as a "basic" starting point for HDD recording, and it "should" last long enough to be useful up to the point that the digital world really comes to pass...the jury's out on that one, tho'...too new to tell???

My Pio 531's 80GB HDD has been very sufficient for my needs (about 15 shows per week during prime season), and my replacement 640 w/160GB...coming from Pioneer on the wings of UPS soon...will be "pulenty" of room for my main HDD recorder!

Hello, I am new to this forum. I have the same basic question in that I am shopping for a DVR, BUT, I know that I want one with a HDD at least a 160GB if not at least a 200GB, with a DV/firewall input as I have a DV, also will need a built-in tuner, digital/optical audio out, multi-format recording and playback, etc.
If looking at something less than $500, do you have any recommendations? I am leaning towards the panasonics but heard that some have setup issues. ALso, I was looking at the Pioneer 640HS but found out it does not have DV inputs..
Thanks!!

Check out the Panasonic ES-15, $99 at Big Lots (if they have any left).
