I was trying to transfer some old vhs tapes that I bought to dvd. I read on a site that it works for transfering vhs to dvd.

The guy I bought it from claims it doesn't,and wants me to buy the next generation of the stabilizer now.

Then, yes it does work for VHS to DVD, and I have also used it for DVD to DVD (despite doing most DVD duplicating in my PC) and it works for that as well. I believe it's the RX-2.

Can you give us the make and model numbers for each of your components (DVD recorder, VCR, television, anything else)? There is no way to tell without this information.

This may seem like a dumb question but is your RX-2 Plugged in or have a "NEW" battery in it?

I know I went crazy over the phone trying to figure out what was wrong with my daughter's because sometimes it would work & sometimes it would'nt & it turned out that she had plugged her's into her Receiver & the plug she just happened to use was a "Switched Plug" so when her Receiver was "OFF" so was her Stabilizer :rolleyes:

So check to make sure it's getting Power & then check to make sure you all the Cables are working correctly.

Just thought I would let everyone know I ordered a Grex from the distributor in Israel. it took exactly 10 days to arrive in the US and worked EXACTLY as they say on their web site. I gave a Comcast Motorola DVR and a Sony RDR-GX315 DVD Recorder, and with the Grex in between, I can record ANY content from my DVR or Cable. It comes with AC adapter and has S-Video and RCA connections. I would recommend it if anyone has the need.

Dragged another VCR player from the bedroom, set up the Sima CT-200 between the VCR players---same thing!?! Then got out a Disney VHS purchased for the grandchildren to save to DVD media for best keeping, expected the "copy once" choice using a DVD-RW. NO! Sima made no difference. (And yes, although I am new to all this, I did have the Sima set up properly between the two players.)

The SIMA doesn't know a thing about "Copy Once". In order to do this, you need to be able to send the "Copy Once" command yourself. This can be done but not with any SIMA product.

Does the Zenith record anything? such as TV?

Almost all of the DVD recorders have copy protection built in but some are better at it than others. None of them should keep you from copying home videos. However, if you had previously used the home video tape to copy protected material, the DVD recorder may be picking that up. I would check the point on the tape where you received the copy protection message. As far as the SIMA being bad, it may not be able to deal with the particular type of protection involved or it may not work with your DVD recorder.

Logic Design is trying to be coy regarding self promotion. He makes a device that can be used to control the bits associated with copy once, the serial copy management system, or copy generation management system (or something like that). He unwisely in my opinion, named his product "The Video Filter" so if you are talking about a generic video filter, you are not necessarily talking about his Video Filter. See the confusion?

If you are having problems with copy once messages and prohibitions, his product is the only thing I am aware of that can control this.

As has been said, this copy once should not occur with your home made videos. Its coming up under the circumstances you describe is fishy. Something is not working right.

As it is done automatically, you technically can't control it..... but, the results are the same. I haven't found anything yet that my Grex wouldn't allow me to copy. I don't have any affiliation with them. Just a satisfied customer.

I have ordered a Grex when I get it, I will test and post results. I will compare to my Sima CT-200

Came today (took 13 days with no progress updates) works great (very small and no instructions, get them on line) version 6.3 mode 001, odd shape but it works - my test was with S-Video, playback looked fine (even with no adjustments). Better than the Sima? hard to tell as both work fine for me on anything I have to try. No settings EZ just plug in - a good item to have - when not in use, you don't notice it.

I've had the RX2 for over 15 years. I've gotten rid of most of my tapes so haven't used it lately. But it worked on all tapes with the exception of Crimson Tide. If your friends' works on your system take the seller up on his offer and get your money back. I've seen these units at BB in Chicago for $30.00. I originally paid $50.00.

The Studios are constantly upgrading their anti copywrite schemes. Recently I tried to make backup copies of Miami Vice and Pirates of the Carr. DVD Decrypter couldn't or wouldn't handle Pirates. But it accepted Miami Vice. So I put the Pirates disc in my Sony Megachanger and dubbed it to the hdd of my Sony 715 DVD recorder using the Sima CT200 in between. Got very good results from a brief viewing of the copy to see if it was OK.

I recently tried the R-X2 with the movie "Cars" to my Pioneer 640 and it was a no go. I think I might have to buy the Grex as it's cheaper than the well known Sima and seemingly works where other Stabilizers don't.

That was the first time my R-X2 let me down, I even did Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (with the R-X2) and it worked great for that, just no luck on Disney's "Cars" so far.

My Grex did Both Pirates 2 and Davinci Code with no problems (oddly Davinci Code did not show protected on the indicator lights) I do not have Cars to try.

So I paid a total of $55.81 for a product that doesn’t work. At least it won’t work for me. This unit is about the size of your fist. It lights up, but only removes the copyguard in the Black and White mode (not in color). So their claim that “It will guarantee to get rip off all copy guard” is true if you are satisfied with B/W.

I’m waiting to hear back from them to get a return authorization number and now I see they are going to charge me a 25% restocking fee! This really blows!

So I’m not only stuck with the cost of mailing it back: $5.95
The original shipping charge they billed me already: $20.86
But a bogus restocking fee of: $8.74
For a grand total of $35.55 (that is if I can even return it; I’ve yet to hear back from them at all)

As of today, Qualitek Industries, has not answered any of my emails nor can I even leave a voice message on the phone number listed on the web page. The email address listed on the webpage just returns error messages!

I have a Sony VRD-MC1 DVD recorder that will not record from some sources using either Sima CT-200 or Grex. If the Sony gets even the briefest signal it does not "like", it locks up and will not record. I recorded on VHS from the antenna a PBS broadcast and it will not transfer to the DVD on the Sony. I think it takes a fraction of a second for the "stabilizers" to recognize and react to a copy protected signal. That moment is sufficient for the Sony to lockup. Some home recorded tapes may have minor faults in the signal or the recording tape that trigger the Sony to lockup. I have had some that would record for a time,. say a half hour or so, and then stop with the copy protected signal. All this possible explanation is just conjecture on my part. Are there other explanations?

The solution to this false triggering is using a real CGMS controller. Neither the SIMA nor the Grex can do this. In other words, send the command to the recorder to allow copying, rather than simply blanking out the copy protection signal embedded in the video.

Even though the current copyguard eliminator device I use is working fine (R-X2), I am contemplating getting my hands on a Grex to have it as a backup or in case they become hard to find someday.

Here is what I wanted to ask people who use theirs.

I have S-Video Output and S-Video Input on the devices that I would use the Grex in between, should I use the S-Video through the Grex or is the RCA (Yellow Cable) just as good?

Has anyone tried both and noticed better results one way or another?

Also, on the site where you buy the Grex it says if you go from your source device into the Grex using S-Video, you can go out of the Grex using either S-Video, Composite or Both (into your recorder) and you get an un-protected Video Signal coming out of the Grex. I don't know why you would want it coming out of the Grex going to two other places, but I though that was pretty unique that it can do that.

I have a Grex. Not entirely satisfied with it. It has 5 "modes". The method of switching modes is cumbersome. But the BIG problem is that they do not at all tell you why or when to use one mode or the other nor what each mode does. That certainly reduces the value of that feature. Why not tell us? We are a bit smarter than a box of rocks. They just say to use Mode 001 unless their tech support tells us to change. Takes a day or so for tech support to answer emails. English is not the primary language of some of their tech support. Also, Grex does not claim to handle ARccOS (I hope I have that right) protection. So it will work in some situations, but not in all. Anyone know the function of the various Grex Modes or where to get that info? I really would like to know.

ARccOS is a digital protection. You won't have problem with that.

I will assume that the XBOX 360 has an RCA Output (Yellow, Red, & White Connections) if it does, then you would hook up your unit like this.

The Red and White connections are your Audio and they would connect directly from the XBOX 360's Outputs to the Inputs of your Polaroid DVD/HDD Recorder. Then the Yellow connection (Video) goes Out of the XBOX, into the Stabilizer, then out of the Stabilizer to the Yellow IN of the Polaroid.

Now you will be able to play the movie that is on your XBOX, get it to your Polaroid by setting the Polaroid to whatever Line Input you connected everything to (ie: Line 1, Line 2, etc...) and once you have it on the Polaroids HDD, you can make your DVD from there.

This hookup really should work for you. If you buy the Grex Stabilizer it has both the RCA (Yellow) connection as well as S-Video, so in the event that your XBOX has an S-Video Out, and I will assume your Polaroid must have an S-Video IN you can connect it all using S-Video the same way I described above.

Thanks for the reply. I really only use the Xbox 360 for a few games but Microsoft Xbox Live MarketPlace has some movies and TV shows that are downloadable but do have copy protection in them. I just want to be able to save the movies for later viewing since once purchased, the movies will expire 24HRS after viewed or 14 days when not viewed. After that, I will have to buy them again if I want to watch it again. The movies average about 3-4 bucks each in Microsoft points so it's easier to just download a movie than go to the store and rent one.

The DRA-0160A seems to be a fair unit. I haven't really played with it enough to say much good about it. I do know the unit has copy protection in it that prevented me from copying a movie from my Xbox 360 to the Polaroid hard drive. I actually have it boxed up ready to return it to WalMart but haven't yet. I was just trying to find ways to get around the copy protection even if I have to buy a unit twice the DRA-0160A's price. I think I will get the Grex Stabilizer or this video filter (http://home.cfl.rr.com/filter/) to see how that works before I decide to return this Polaroid. I was hoping there was a firmware hack such as the one for the LiteOn DVD recorders but I have not found one yet. But so far the Polaroid DRA-01601A is good for the price, works great but the copy protection built in it.

Well I doubt there would be a Firmware update to correct Copy Protection, because that would mean that Polaroid would come out and say: "OK, here is an update so our unit isn't copy protected anymore" which I don't think would ever happen.

However you might find a hack online somewhere, maybe even something to the effect of a code to enter using the remote or something like that, which Polaroid would have to include in their unit, but not go public telling people about.

This defies logic. The process of stripping and restriping the code on the component input is exactly the same as in composite. If a unit can strip the copy protection via composite, the same unit can do the same on component.

So, has anyone actually used the Grex to remove copy protection using component connections? How well did/does it work?

I just recd the Grex yesterday & I still can't record VOD - it's still protected :(. We are using some very old cables for connecting - do you think better cables would assist?

No - plugs into an outlet.

You may want to try checking with a voltmeter whether the power adaptor actually works and it's actually producing the required voltage and current needed for the Grex. Also check whether the manufacturer actually shipped you the NA adapter instead Euro power adapter (I have in my posession, 220-240V adapter with North American prong although I bought the power adapter in Australia. I still keep it since it's such an oddity)

Well, all the units TV/DVD/Cable/Grex is all going into a very expensive surge protector strip which is plugged into the outlet. I know the GREX is "working" since the red light on top is reacting as it should. And Yes I know we have the proper adapter.

My question about the cables still stands though - we are using cheap cables that are probably about 15 years old. We are considering ordering some monster cables but only if someone thinks this will help, since they are quite expensive.

I should add the DVD recorder is a Sony RDRGX 330 aand cable is Comcast Cable. Both of which are on their tested list.

My question about the cables still stands though - we are using cheap cables that are probably about 15 years old. We are considering ordering some monster cables but only if someone thinks this will help, since they are quite expensive.
Since your cables are so old, I suggest you try some new cables, but buy them from Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cable...both are AVS Forum Alliance Members (Sponsors). They have excellent cables, and buying from them will also help keep this site up and running.

An update. Changing the cables did nothing. That said, by changing the mode to mode 4 all is well now. This came via the help desk at the grex website. So all is good to go now.

If you use Composite, S-Video or Components, those are analog sources. As long as the DVD recorder records in one of these, provided that copy protection is filtered out, you should be able to copy. This is the way the video filter works.

From the reports I've heard about Grex, it can strip any kind of copyprotection scheme because the output from the DVD to the DVD recorder is in analog domain.

i have both a grex and sima ct2. i normally run s vid cable from tosh 5970 out to ct2 or grex in/ out to tosh dr2 or pan es15. the ct2 is sharper but sucks a little black level out, the grex gives a little softer image and a little dimmer (as opposed to lower black level). i actually have 2 ct2s, the first i bought 8-04, the second, 8-06. the first ct2 only sucks a little black level out of the image, but the second, newer ct2 takes a lot out, rendering it almost unusable (except when recording w/ pan es 15, cuz u can add black level to signal in the recorder.) however, i can copy anything to anything incl. vhs to dvd. to the best of my knowledge, CORRECTION/EDIT-ct2 accepts analog source, then digitizes the image, then back to analog. the grex uses analog 'conversion', but they both have analog composite and s vid connections. id have to recommend the sima ct2 over the grex. i watch on a pan 720p pj w/ 108" screen so sharpness is very important to me. w/ the ct2 the home burnt flics are very watchable.

if the DVD can't even be copied with DVDFab Platinum, there must be something wrong with the DVD itself. Pardon me if it sounds condescending, but have you updated DVDFab Platinum to the absolute latest version?

Yes, updated. The DVD plays perfectly on a Sony player. I did suspect the DVD as being the problem, but since it plays properly, it is difficult to maintain that belief. I am trying to borrow a different sample of the same DVD to try it. That should help indicate if the problem is the particular DVD sample I have.

Contact DVDFab and tell them about the problem. If it is a new copy protection, they should be able to beat it.

Hi, does anyone here know if the DVD Red Pro, Grex, or the Video Magic will work on the Panasonic DMR-ES20. Long story short, I have an old DVD Red Pro that I bought about 2-3 years ago, and it worked perfectly on my old Panasonic DMR-E30 recorder (recording DVD to DVD). I just bought a refurbished Panasonic DMR-ES20, and the DVD Red Pro won't work with it. I'm assuming this might be because the firmware inside is outdated. The dimax website lists the DMR-ES20 as being compatible with the Red Pro (or Grex), but I haven't gotten any response from them yet (I sent them two emails in the past few days). So, I'm just wondering if anyone has any of these (Grex, DVD Red Pro, or the Video Magic) and if they work on a Panasonic DVD recorder (ES20 or similar numbers). Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The person says I should contact DVDFab. They have never given the slightest response to me about any previous matter. So I quit wasting my time on that. Grex does not disclose what the various modes do. Apparently there are 5 modes. I do not at all understand why someone would build into their products supposedly helpful features and then not disclose to the customer how to effectively use those features. Make no sense at all to me.

I have a disc that is severely scratched, still can be played flawlessly, but can no longer be extracted. So it's possible. I have yet to find a disc that can't be extracted by DVDFab.

I've been reading the various messages and have some comments/questions. For years I've used an RX-2 for VHS to VHS back-up copying. (I'd save original in the event tape got "crumpled" or otherwise damaged.) About a year ago I tried it with DVD to VHS and usually didn't have problems making back-up tapes to seve DVD's as pristine as possible. HOWEVER, some of the copies from some of the DVD's had color stripes through some of the colors in the copy....most often through reds and blues. Usually, the more "pure" the color was, the more vivid the color stripe. Muted colors, "flesh tones" and "earth tones" were often ok.

The RX-2 would not allow copies of DVD to DVD. I recently bought a Grex hoping that at least the color stripe issues from DVD to VHS would be eliminated. I didn't hold out too much hope for DVD to DVD given some of the comments in this forum. I just got the Grex and tried DVD to VHS and still had the same color stripes. I have yet to try DVD to DVD but given what I've seen, I'm not hopeful. I've written to Dimax but have heard nothing yet.

I've seen things on this forum about different "modes" but as someone said, there were no instructions with the Grex other than the diagrams and general information on their web site. Does anyone have any suggestions? Mode change comments? How? Thoughts about changing the source player (Sylvania DVC 860E). Receiving recorder (LG RC797T).

If one looks closely enough, the Grex (Dimax) website explains how to change Modes, but offers no additional information about the expected results of a Mode change

grex does allow dvd to dvd, but its resulting image is not as sharp as sima ct2/200s image.

This appears to be an inaccurate or misleading statement. My Grex allows component connections.

not that i know of. but i dont know everything. go w separates.

There are some model combo units that allegedly will let you run a line out to a stabilizer and then back in. I've never actually done this, having separate VCRs and DVDRs.

It refers to the Grex stabilizer but I would think the same principle would work with other similar units. Go down to the list and see if your combo unit is included. Even if not, find a similar unit and experiment with the connections.

I've had my 3575H for about a month now. This a replacement for the 3455H that was OK but I had a number of problems with that model. Actually, this was the fourth replacement and since they no longer make the 3455H they sent me the 3575H. I really like the new features of this model. This one actually will dub from disc to HDD which the 3455 would not...and editing is much easier as well.

The Grex works flawlessly using component input to my Polaroid DRM 2001-G.

Can you get a single 'Green' component video cable, or do you have two sets (Green/Red/Blue) with one running from the STB to the Grex and the second running from the Grex to your DVD recorder....and I guess the Red/Blue go straight from the STB to your recorder, leaving you with a red/blue that are unused.

I would recommend buying custom cables, from some place like Blue Jeans cable. You can order a red and a blue, and two greens, whose total length equals that of the other two. Just decide where you want the Grex, so you size the green wires accordingly.

I have the Philips 3575H DVDR and have been using the Grex. I have been able to do VHS to DVD/HD, DVD to DVD/HD and protected cable to DVD/HD with excellent results. I also have an old Panasonic with a HD (purchased in 2002), it also works with that even though I do not need it for the cable TV (my Panasonic as well as my Presidian 3222 will copy anything that I’ve thrown at it from the cable box).

By the way, does anyone have the Archos 300 series pmp? This unit copies everything without any effort.

(I mostly use VHS to DVD right now, until I have transferred all old tapes, then I plan to cease usage of VHS) I am not looking to copy commercial dvds etc, just TV. The set up I am using is DVR to vcr/dvd combo (when I record to VHS), then to standalone DVD recorder when I make the DVDR disc. When I send it to DVDRW I skip the combo unit.

From researching this site, I have narrowed down my selection to 3 choices. I would like to know users opinions on which device would allow me to copy the cable and give me the best picture.

I can't vouch for the copy protection handling, but I use the Video Filter primarily for inserting a widescreen flag in the s-video signal when recording anamorphic widescreen programs from my DirecTV HD TiVo to my Pioneer 520H DVD recorder.

The widescreen flag allows my widescreen recordings to be detected as such on playback in any DVD player. It makes no difference if playing back a widescreen program on a widescreen TV. But it makes a big difference when playing back a recorded widescreen program on a 4x3 TV since the widescreen flag enables the DVD player option of selecting letterboxing or full screen (a.k.a., pan and scan or zoom and crop) to work properly.

Without the widescreen flag, playback on a 4x3 TV results in tall and skinny people and there is no way to force it to letterbox on most TVs.

I don't find the picture that soft from the Grex, however, I do have a dp-5000 on order and will let you know when I try it out.

Good discussion. I recently bought a VS-100 from Qualitek (read on other forum they were a good brand). Got it in and connected it between my VCR and my computer video card (ATI All-in-wonder 9600). I got good audio but the video would stick on one frame and not advance. Same as it did before the video stabilzer. What's the deal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the CT 2 and the CT 200, and they have copied over 500 or more VHS tapes (commercial and home made) and DVDs to my three different Sony recorders with no problems whatsoever. First off, I am a newbie here and just want to say hi to all!! Second I am new to this video stabilizer thing. I didn't realize that tapes had this on them and that it would be picked up by my DVD recorder (Philips DVDR3575H). I tried recording some of our Disney vhs tapes to DVD and it was a no go. After reading over this section I now know that I need a video stabilizer and I am in search for a good one. I hear good things here about the Grex stabilizer, and I have heard good thing about Sima new one. I see that there is little price difference in them Grex being a little cheaper. If I was to buy one of these which would you folks suggest. It seems like the Grex will get the job done, so I would I spend the little extra for a Sima product? Any help in this would be great and thank you in advance!!

Well, I received the DP-5000, so far I have only used it to record from cable TV. I have used the Grex to record from VHS, DVD & cable TV. The main difference I've noticed so far is the DP-5000 recorded from cable TV with total ease (I had to change modes on my Grex). I have not noticed any difference in picture quality but maybe my eye is not as fine tuned as some. Still comparing though. I'm glad that I have both as I can always use one as a back-up. I just bought my daughter the Phillips DVD/HD recorder for Christmas, she will take it back to college with her. I will probably give her my old Grex (multiple modes) and purchase the newer Grex that doesn't require mode changes.

Update to the DP-5000, Grex question. Apparently there are multiple DP-5000's. See this site: www.220-electronics.com/dvd/copyenhancer.htm, this is not the same as the one at this site: www.world-import.com/dp-5000_copy_enhancer_video_stabilizer.htm. I have the one from the world-import site and maybe that's why i don't see a difference. It appears that you can make adjustments on the former product and maybe that accounts for the better picture quality.

Apparantly, from what you and others have said, the difference apparantly is really slight, and may not be noticed by me.

i have both a grex and sima ct-2. the ct-2 gives a sharper and brighter image than the grex. if i was just starting out id only get a grex as a last resort.

1st question-no, afaik.

No, the only way to retain the Menu function of the original DVD would to copy using some kind of PC program. That would make a mirror copy.
As far as the chapters DVDR's will make there own chapters every 5 min, or some will let you set the interval, but it would always be the same. No resemblance to the original DVD. Now if you get a product like the Philips 3575 and record to it's HDD, you can create your own chapters, at the points you want. And then burn at HS lossless to it's dvd burner. The resulting DVD will have your chapter points intact. Note this will be little labor intensive to add the chapters to the HDD, but you will get basically what you want. Just a thought. The Philips runs around $300 at Walmart. Less refurbished on-line.

Or you could look for the similar Magnavox model, which is $100.00 cheaper, and still basically offers everything you would need.

Hello, I would like to offer some people here another solution.
I have a Sima Color Corrector that I use, it`s the Sima CC2
unit. It does a better job at fixing the Color Stripe code
found on alot of video tapes.
I have alot of ADULT video tapes that I bought from
Adam and Eve over the years, and ALOT of these video tapes are
copies, NOT the original. That`s how they used to sell them.
UNFORTUNATLY, they are loaded with the Macrovision
Color stripe and some are unwatchable!
I use the CC2 to get rid of as MUCH of the color stripe
that I can. The Sima ct-200 does not do a good job with
VIDEO TAPES!
Also, the CC2 does NOT get rid of the color stripe
completely! It`s STILL THERE! I`m SO SICK of seeing
a PURPLE, YELLOW and sometimes ORANGE color stripe
at the top 2-4 inches of my tv screen!!!!!
Is there ANYTHING out there that will get rid of these
stripes for good?????

I'm going to guess that if the tapes were copies, it is possible that the copies themselves contain the color stripe. In which case it will be almost impossible to correct. If you play the tapes directly to your TV, and they contain the stripes, I believe that's the case. My guess might also be, if the tapes were recorded in EP or SLP speed, they will never really look very good. especially years after they were made. SLP/EP never really was very consistent between players. They may have looked OK on the machine that they were recorded on, but other players may have a hard time playing them OK.

This message is to KarenLynx. I read on one of your posts that you state GREX has a newer model that does not require mode changes. I was just on the GREX website and did not see any model that was described as not having to change modes to work correctly in certain situations, so I was wondering what you were referring too? Any information is greatly appreciated. I was also curious if anyone knew if the DP-5000 and the ATX-500 were copies of the SIMA CT-2?

I saw another post on here referencing my same experience with the Qualitek VS-100 and Qualitek industries and am compelled to share my experience. That experience being one with equipment that doesn't work, overpriced shipping, a 25% restock fee, and no customer service. BUYER BEWARE! THIS PRODUCT IS A RIP OFF! Don't believe what you read. None that I know about. And I think PC people use special hacked software to duplicate copy protected DVD's. I personally use a Sima ct-2 to make backup copies of my DVD's, and use S-video cables for fine quality copies. Not mirror copies like PC guys get, but good enough for me especially with my Panny DVDR's.

For connections, the green component video cable goes through the video filter; the red and blue do not. I was told that the signal processing for component video is different than that for composite video. The Video Filter is designed to handle the component video.

I own one of these and I use it to insert a widescreen flag into recordings being made on my Pioneer 520H DVD recorder coming from my HR10-250 DirecTV HD TiVo. But my DVD recorder lacks component video input, so I use S-video instead.

Using this combination gives me DVD recordings that are "enhanced for widescreen" just like commercial widescreen DVDs. I set the HD TiVo for 480i output and connect the S-video through the Video Filter which inserts the widescreen flag that is recognized and recorded by my DVD recorder.

This effort would not be needed to playback the recorded DVDs only on 16x9 TVs. But playback on 4x3 TVs without the widescreen flag results in tall and skinny people because the widescreen (anamorphic) picture is squished horizontally to fit in and fill the 4x3 screen.

If a DVD player is set for a 4x3 TV and letterboxed output for widescreen content, the DVD player adds black bars above and below the widescreen picture so the proper proportions are maintained when viewing on the 4x3 TV, but only if the widescreen flag is detected when playing back the DVD.

I have tested the copy protection feature of the Video Filter for VHS tapes with Macrovision that I cannot find on commercial DVD. These have been mostly older tapes with children's movies. All copies worked fine.

I tested one or two copies from commercial DVDs and they worked fine. But, My sample size is very small so there may be some sources on DVD that may not copy.

Usually I make DVD backup copies on my computer because it preserves DD 5.1 audio and it does not need to convert to analog video and back, preserving the video quality also. I put the originals away and let the grandchildren use the backup copies.

My computer is a Mac. I use MacTheRipper and Toast to make backup copies of DVDs.

IF your cable box can output anamorphic video for a widescreen source program (i.e., it fills a 4x3 window with tall and skinny folks because the video has been squished horizontally from the original 16x9 window to the more narrow 4x3 window), then you could substitute your cable box for my HD TiVo.

Your DVD recorder must be capable of recognizing and recording the widescreen flag (like the Pioneer models do), or, be capable of force-setting the widescreen flag while recording (like some Sony and Toshiba models do).

For my Pioneer DVD recorder, the Video Filter was needed to insert the widescreen flag while recording because the DVD recorder has no means to do so. With a Sony or Toshiba that can force-set the widescreen flag, there would be no need for the external Video Filter.

So far I have only used it for DVD or cable to Archos 705 DVR. I get DVD quality playback on the Archos unit. I don't have much need for DVD to DVD as I'm trying to go lighter (converting only to DIVX or XDIV and storing on my Archos or external back-up drive).

I personally do not understand why do you people use Video Stabilizers like Grex on component video. I know no DVD recorder capable to accept video via component input. Can someone tell me where component video can be used except of connecting it directly to TV or receiver?

Just a few older DVDRs used component. No modern ones do. S-video is about as good as we get now.

New member with question... I have DirecTV and a Panasonic 75 DVR. Until last week, I was able to record TV shows from the DirecTV signal to the Panasonic. DirecTV has recently started a copyright protection block so I can't record any TV shows to my Panasonic (so I can save them on DVDs). Will one of the stabilizers discussed in this thread overcome this copyright block from DirecTV? If so, which one gives the best quality at the present time (Nov 2008). Thank you for your advice.

Here's a thread that talks about a couple different filters. From it I would gather the Video Filter might be the best, but a tad bit expensive. The DP7000 sounds pretty good and the Grex sounds like it loses the most in resolution. I have a old Sima CT-2 and am very happy with it but it's no longer made.
Any of these filters should do the trick for you. I'm curious are you able to save them to your Pannys HDD, IOW does it have the copy once flag or is it the no copy flag?
Either way they must have updated the firmware of your box. Did you have your box worked on or did they do this over the air? By air I mean satellite.

Thank you for your response, jjeff. I appreciate your reccomendation, and agree that the Video Filter does look good, but expensive at $154 + S&H, total $169. To answer your question, DirecTV is blocking the signal in select test markets (I guess I'm just lucky that way). I think they updated my DirecTV receiver by satellite signal, as it was working fine before last week. I called DirecTV and they were very rude to me. Before I switch to DISH Network (whose sales rep says they have no plans to do this, for what that's worth), I thought I'd try to find a work-around. Back to your question, I can record to the hard drive of my DirecTV receiver. When I try to record to my Panasonic 75 DVR's hard drive, either scheduled manual recording or just pushing the record button to record the signal coming thru the satellite receiver, I get a copyright warning that pops up on the screen and says no recording is allowed.

That doesn't bode well for other Dish/Sat. customers then:(

My Sima was ~$100 a few years back so to me anyway $169 might be doable especially when you consider it will allow you to back up your commercial DVDs, if that interests you. Of course no one likes unplanned expenses.

No problems recording Dish SD from their 322 dual-tuner receiver to my Panny EH75V - yet (knock on wood).

I'm glad Dish Network is still working okay. It would be an incredible hassle to switch from DirecTV to Dish Network, but we may have to. You don't need it for your satellite signal, but I'm wondering if you have a stabilizer, and what kind you chose? I guess I'm going to have to get one. Several people on this thread have recommended the DP-X7000 or the Video Filter. There is about a $30 - 40 difference in cost with S&H. Both are pretty expensive; as jjeff said, "no one likes unplanned expenses." But then, no one likes their Panasonic 75 DVR sitting there gathering dust, when it could be archiving TV shows onto DVD to watch at another time...

I have the Sima ct-200, which is no longer made. Never had to use it for that purpose, though. But others here say it works just fine. So do the two you mentioned.

The Video Filter is probably the better of the two, if you don't mind paying more. But either one will suffice if you're just recording standard definition TV.

Thing is, once you have it, you have it. So if you ever switch providers, you shouldn't have to worry. Plus, if they ever completely crack down on them like jjeff said, you'll have it.

It's also good for copying pre-recorded DVD's or putting VHS tapes on DVD.

(As far as Dish not CP'ing, someone in another thread said that they called them, and they were told they don't have any plans on doing that. Now, I don't know how reliable that is, because different CSR's from Dish always tend to tell you different things, but at least it's not there now.)

Finalize the discs thru the Disc Edit or Disc Setup menu (location and procedure depends on which DVDR you have)... look for "Finalize" in your manual.

I have Dish Network and am currently having same problems with copy protection. I've been trying to record to my DVDR from my Dish Network DVR and shows cut out. I've decided to try one of the filters as well.

I wish I had read this sooner. I ordered a power inverter for the car. I was defective and the process to return the product and get refunded has now been going on three months and still not finished. Qualitek is the worst company I have ever dealt with. Via their webpage, I purchased their: Digital Video Stabilizer For DVD and VCR with Video Clarifier and Corrector for $34.95 thinking I was getting a good deal.

Well, let me tell you, it ain’t so good! :eek:
First of all, these guys overcharge for shipping bigtime!!!
They charged me $20.86 for UPS ground (for a tiny box).
So I paid a total of $55.81 for a product that doesn’t work. At least it won’t work for me. This unit is about the size of your fist. It lights up, but only removes the copyguard in the Black and White mode (not in color). So their claim that “It will guarantee to get rip off all copy guard” is true if you are satisfied with B/W.

I’m waiting to hear back from them to get a return authorization number and now I see they are going to charge me a 25% restocking fee! This really blows!

So I’m not only stuck with the cost of mailing it back: $5.95
The original shipping charge they billed me already: $20.86
But a bogus restocking fee of: $8.74
For a grand total of $35.55 (that is if I can even return it; I’ve yet to hear back from them at all)

I have the Facetvideo Clarifier, and have had it forever, (to be safe I bought two) one does not work at all anymore, where the picture does not come in at all, and the other is now making the video come in sligthly darker than the original, can this be fixed, why would this happen now? I record to a Panasonic DMR with hard drive and have not always had this problem. It happens with old movies and newer ones.

I purchased one of the units to dub over my collection of VSH tapes. This unit by itself stopped some of the macros but would cause the video to hang, not the audio. I then attached a TBC along with the unit, this corrected that problem. Here is the down side even further, the video would discolor or posterize the video later into the movie. I would not recommend this item to anyone trying to dub movies, they may be disappointed when they re-watch the video at a later date.
