View Full Version : Final Destination 3 - Poor mastering
Chris Rein 07-27-06, 11:01 PM Well, I sat through this awful film tonight, and the content itself wasn't the worst part. The mastering on this disc was absolutely terrible.
I'm not talking about the video or audio quality, but rather the stupid "Choose their fate" feature that ruins the theatrical cut. It was terrible. Every time a death was about to happen, the DVD would freeze for a second (sometimes longer!) and then go. I chose the theatrical version too! New Line really screwed this one up. What a waste of an evening! I couldn't even enjoy the 6.1 DTS track because it kept interrupting the flow of the film.
Anyone else having this awful problem?

Nope. Played flawlessly on my player (a Sony). PQ is up to the top of New Line standards. The movie itself was OK- it's actually got smarter writing and better acting than the second one, but I didn't like it as much. The concept is getting a bit stale in spite of their efforts to throw in new wrinkles. The deaths are gorier, but they don't have as much depth in the Rube Goldberg-ian logic this time around. And it feels a bit meaner.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the material on disk 2. This is some of the better production features I've seen recently, and the animated short on death is priceless- the disk worth a rent just for that. If you didn't watch it, do.

I had the one second freeze during death scenes...It was annoying.
spyder696969 07-28-06, 03:25 AM No freezes whatsoever for us, except when we watched the "Choose Their Fate" option (which must have a delay to make the choice) the second time around. FD3 was far, far, far more bland and shallow than the first and second films of the series. This one had horrendous acting and an underdeveloped plotline that seemed to lead to nowhere. Death scenes were so contrived and inane that we thought we were watching a made-for-TV movie. After the anticipation of waiting since FD2, this was a colossal letdown. PQ was fairly good (some dark scenes), SQ was well done (watch bonus features on how the sounds were made). Rather than a spot next to our beloved FD and FD2, FD3's "final destination" will be in the trash bin. :(
The animated short on the bonus features IS the best part of the DVD, hands down. :)
dmoeller17 07-28-06, 05:03 PM yea i actually saw it in the theater. Not a great movie but the girls are hot. I'll rent it but probabely not buy.
Seriously I have gotten so spoiled with online rentals, I have not bought a dvd is over 2 years. More money for equipment upgrades
Scott Simonian 07-28-06, 05:25 PM Haven't seen this dvd yet but I had a similar problem with another movie.
Blade: Trinity...never watched it until I bought it on dvd. Figured I should watch the "theatrical" version first. Bad mistake! I should have just watched the "director's cut" cause everytime a scene that was omitted came up it would freeze for a second to three and then resume. Pretty annoying. I thought my dvd player was dying but it just was scanning to the next scene, I guess.
Sigh.
thumperxr69 07-28-06, 10:45 PM 3 was definitely the worst of the Final Destinations. poor acting. The first 2 had interesting plot twists and characters you cared about. Yeah... a couple of hot chicks and that's about it. Not worth a rental.

cip4465 07-29-06, 12:36 AM Worked perfectly for me. I chose the Theatrical cut, and there were no freezes at all. In fact, I kind of thinking the actual "deaths" came too fast - some I wasn't even prepared for, and so somewhat missed what happened.
I'll have to try the choose your own adventure portion of the movie, see how that works.
Like others, I liked the other 2 better than this one.
sbowler579 07-29-06, 11:45 AM Its great to hear your comments on this movies, I enjoyed the first two instalments of the films and was looking forward to buying this, think I will just rent it now. Cheers guys.
mooshoo 07-29-06, 05:57 PM I had the skipping problem too, watching the theatrical cut. It would freeze where the edit/cut scenes were. a real pita.
ota, the girl playing the lead character was pretty dang hot!! yow!

I completely agree with Fred. The pic/sound was good quality (I too have a Sony DVD; of the upconverting type connected via HDM1 1.1 to a Sony 42A10) & they , umm, took care of all of the characters vis-a-vis the future of this series.
The second disc was excellent, IMHO. For the 15 bucks I paid at BB, the second disc was worth the full price & I consider the feature disk to be "free". YMMV
I had no skipping as well.[Denon 2900] I wonder those of you who had isseus, what kinda player did you use?
spyder696969 07-30-06, 01:20 AM ota, the girl playing the lead character was pretty dang hot!! yow!
If you're into her, you should check out Sky High. Personally, she doesn't do much for me.

You see the "what kind of ______ do you use" question a lot on AVS.
If people would just take a few minutes to fill out their gear list in the User CP, you'd see it much less often. :)

Personally, I thought the goth girl was the real hottie of the flick :D

ME TOO! And I hate it because the ending of the Unrated edition makes no friggin sense at ALL! Grrrrrr.

A little too much metal on the face for me... ;)
Not so much before, but definitely after :D
RobertWood 07-31-06, 08:23 PM I've got a weakness for these movies. I know they're schlock but it doesn't matter cause they still reel me in.
This one did too.
p.s. I just wish my new DLP projector was getting here before Wednesday, dang it.
Sure woulda liked to have seen that coaster sequence with it but the rental has to go back tonight.

I do too. And if you're a fan this one is still worth a watch. But it's definitely the weakest of the three.
RobertWood 07-31-06, 08:28 PM But what about my "p.s.", Fred? This is my first bulb projector in three years. I'm as excited as a kid in a candy store. ;)

I didn't even see that for some reason!! Not to drag things OT but what did you get? You're gonna be HD capable aren't you ya SOB :D :D I just can't scrape up the cash for a 720p pj yet...
spyder696969 07-31-06, 09:18 PM But what about my "p.s.", Fred? This is my first bulb projector in three years. I'm as excited as a kid in a candy store. ;)
BobWood,
If you're the Sultan of Cheap, then I'm easily the Maharajadhiraja Bahadur of Cheap. :D
Rikimaru 07-31-06, 09:38 PM I can't believe how many people are commenting on the bad acting in this movie. Of course the acting is bad! You knew what you were getting into when you got this movie. Come on, now! I thought the movie was hilarious.
RobertWood 07-31-06, 10:06 PM I bit the bullet on the Optoma HD72. But I did it on the cheap. What with the already cheap price, the rebate and the free bulb, I was able to turn the sale of a couple of dinosaur government surplus CRT projectors into DC2 DLP.
It's pretty phenomenal how you can buy the display technology today for a little over a grand which cost seven grand only two or three years ago.
But enough about me and my toy. Fred, I took your advice and watched the "making of" on this DVD.
Fred is right, dear hearts. That is bar none the best glimpse into behind the scenes of moviemaking I have ever seen. Awesome.
That production honestly deserves a thread of it's own.
FredProgGH 07-31-06, 10:28 PM Arrgh- you are an SOB *lol* That's great- shoot me a review PM when you have it setup. I have been trying to decide between the HD72 and the IN76...
OK, no more O/T, promise :D
RobertWood 07-31-06, 11:25 PM I make the same promise.
But trust me on this one. Spend just a few more bucks and go with the 720p panel resolution, Fred.
It doesn't just translate into a less pixelated image (which is important by itself). But since they both use the 4x color wheel they're still gonna show you the dithering effect. And as the pixel density increases the dithering becomes less visible.
Do this even if you need to wait it out until 720p is the price of the IN72 now.
I predict that will be about a week from Thursday. :D
RobertWood 07-31-06, 11:36 PM My bad. Ignore all that nonsense I just spewed. I just realized you said IN7"6". And not "2".
Probably aint a dime's wortha difference between the performance of that and the Optoma. :)

Nope. PQ was good, DTS-ES sound amazing. I did watch the theatrical version version first and enjoyed the movie. Was a renter but since I have the other two this will be a purchase.
Gary*w* 08-15-06, 12:17 PM I rented it when it came out on DVD. I watched it without the choose your fate option turned on and it played perfectly looked good and sounded great with DTSES soundtrack. I watched again with the "Fate" option on and it never froze but was sorta slow to respond on occasion (suntan bed scene and the drive thru scene). I thought the feature was neat but unnessicary.
I loved the first two films in the series and thought this one was ok. I doubt I'll continue to watch if they make more. It's getting a bit stale.
Played ok for me. The film itself was ok. An entertaining popcorn flick. Nothing less, nothing more. The first two were much better though. Neither sequels have equalled the first film though, which I thought was one of the best and most original horror films of the past decade. It had great atmosphere and suspense. I remember being creeped out when the plane blew up in the TRAILER! It was the same for the film too of course. The second film had more going for it though than the third. It brought its own style
It really surprises me that Morgan and Wong, who are two great X-Files writers, couldn't do better than the second film. I was so sure if they got to do another one it would easily be better. I was wrong.
Crazytrekker 08-16-06, 07:52 PM I had no skipping as well.[Denon 2900] I wonder those of you who had isseus, what kinda player did you use?
Interesting. I just got through watching this disc. I also have a Denon 2900 (UK model upgraded for R1). Whilst watching the DTS track I noticed an audio dropout just before they got on the rollercoaster, and then two more dropouts before the next couple of deaths. I switched to the DD5.1 track for the rest of the movie and it played fine.
At the end I went back to the point of the first glitch, with DTS switched on, and it seemed to be fine. So the problem appears to be somewhat erratic.
Did you watch the movie in DTS or DD?
John
magoo2004 08-17-06, 02:52 PM DVD "freezing". Ever open up a DVD player and clean the laser?
PooperScooper 02-10-07, 09:58 PM I just got done watching this in HD on cable. It wasn't OAR but it still looked pretty good. I liked this one better than the second (except for the first scene in the 2nd). I always get a kick out of the "setup" for each kill scene.

kevinp8192 02-10-07, 11:31 PM I liked this movie too. It's silly, but it's like an antidote to all these self-important and depressing slasher flicks (The Hills Have Eyes, TCM remakes, etc.) we've gotten lately. I can't imagine anyone not grinning whenAshley and Ashlyn turn on the radio before tanning, and the first guitar riffs of "Rollercoaster of Love" start playing. You just know they're going to roast in the tanning beds. When it finally comes, it delivers even better than we expect. You can tell the filmmakers at least want the audience to have a good time.
BTW, I had the same problems with the pausing on the DVD with my (admittedly horrible) Sammy 850. But it really didn't bother me.

Shame on you, Poop! Just watching this now. I was about to mention that this is now on HD as well. I recorded it today to DVR, probably watch it again tomorrow. The freeway scene in FD2 is one of my all-time faves.
Thinking back, I'd bet that all the pausing on DVD was due to the "Choose Their Fate" bonus feature. It's almost as though someone did a really, really poor job at artificially inserting layer changes. InfiniFilm has ways of truly screwing things up like that while trying to create cool gizmos.
PooperScooper 02-11-07, 09:21 AM I was about to say I didn't notice any pausing problems on the DVD. Duh! That's cause I watched it on TV. :)

spyder696969 02-11-07, 01:20 PM Don't feel bad, Larry. I can't change channels on my DVD player either. ;)
