View Full Version : the italian job review fredwi 08-02-06, 02:35 PM http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review.php?ID=23003  Gary Murrell 08-02-06, 02:39 PM I have seen this on Showtime, it is also another movie that is shot very very soft in some scenes, people are gonna be trashing this also just like Tomb Raider, when it is supposed to look how it looks and in my book that is sweet can't wait for this one :) -Gary Kram Sacul 08-02-06, 03:11 PM Seems like it has the same EE I saw when I watched it. How about DNR? oshodi 08-02-06, 03:18 PM This is not the first Paramount release to garner bad PQ reviews. Paramount needs to get their act together. Fettastic 08-02-06, 03:22 PM I have seen this on Showtime, it is also another movie that is shot very very soft in some scenes, people are gonna be trashing this also just like Tomb Raider, when it is supposed to look how it looks and in my book that is sweet can't wait for this one :) -Gary I would have preferred something better than Tomb Raider, but I'll take it. Edge enhancement isn't how ANY transfer is supposed to look. Fettastic 08-02-06, 03:22 PM This is not the first Paramount release to garner bad PQ reviews. Paramount needs to get their act together. It's certainly not the trend we want to see. But you didn't hear that from me because I might get chased around with pitchforks and torches again. ;) Ktulu_1 08-02-06, 03:27 PM ...but I also think that if some random person who doesn't spend all day reloading the AVS Forum strolled into my living room twenty minutes in, the response would be somewhere in the neighborhood of "That's high definition? Really?" :D Fettastic 08-02-06, 03:30 PM We should be a little careful with this review though because he also said The Manchurian candidate was blurry in places. Somehow he devines that this was intended by the director of photography. I don't know how he thinks he knows this, but more importantly I don't know how he can apply that logic to TMC but not TIJ. Gary Murrell 08-02-06, 03:47 PM This is not the first Paramount release to garner bad PQ reviews. Paramount needs to get their act together. your joking right ? -Gary Tom Bley 08-02-06, 03:55 PM Paramount has done an excellent job With their transfers thus far. Yes, the Manchurian Candidate was soft or slightly out of focus but, only in some of the scenes. I noticed this as well. This is Hardly the fault of Paramount  It's the way the film was shot. DigitalfreakNYC 08-02-06, 04:13 PM This is not the first Paramount release to garner bad PQ reviews. Paramount needs to get their act together. did you read the same review i did? There was nothing there that said it was "bad" Macroblocker 08-02-06, 04:15 PM Paramount has done an excellent job With their transfers thus far. This is Hardly the fault of Paramount  It's the way the film was shot. have any of you seen Sahara on HD DVD yet? I know the movie isnt that great but the PQ left me open mouthed. Sahara looks like the best HD transfers thus far. :D Gary Murrell 08-02-06, 04:28 PM have any of you seen Sahara on HD DVD yet? I know the movie isnt that great but the PQ left me open mouthed. Sahara looks like the best HD transfers thus far. :D I would love to, but Amazon wants 30$ for it :( -Gary Fettastic 08-02-06, 04:33 PM have any of you seen Sahara on HD DVD yet? I know the movie isnt that great but the PQ left me open mouthed. Sahara looks like the best HD transfers thus far. :D It's definitely right up there with Riddick. Fettastic 08-02-06, 04:34 PM I would love to, but Amazon wants 30$ for it :( -Gary maybe you can pick it up used on down the line. It's definitely worth picking up. Yes the movie is dumb but it looks utterly amazing. TazExprez 08-02-06, 06:03 PM I would love to, but Amazon wants 30$ for it :( -Gary Maybe they lower it soon, like they did with Sleepy Hollow. I bought Sahara for $17.99 and it arrived today. Sleepy Hollow, which I ordered yesterday for $13.49, arrived today in a separate box. howe 08-02-06, 06:03 PM I would love to, but Amazon wants 30$ for it :( -Gary Got mine at BB for $19.95 with the Target.com price match. :D Adam Tyner 08-02-06, 07:05 PM We should be a little careful with this review though because he also said The Manchurian candidate was blurry in places. Somehow he devines that this was intended by the director of photography. I don't know how he thinks he knows this, but more importantly I don't know how he can apply that logic to TMC but not TIJ.You're grossly mischaracterizing both reviews. DthDlr01 08-02-06, 07:25 PM It's certainly not the trend we want to see. But you didn't hear that from me because I might get chased around with pitchforks and torches again. ;) BURN THE WITCH I SAY BURN THE WITCH!!!!!!! lmao Topweasel 08-02-06, 08:36 PM BURN THE WITCH I SAY BURN THE WITCH!!!!!!! lmao Why does Fett weight the same as a duck?? dwisniski 08-02-06, 08:56 PM I didn't agree with DVDTalk's review of the PQ for Sky Captain, which I thought looked great, so I may not agree with their reveiw for the Italian Job, we'll know on Tuesday ;) Adam Tyner 08-02-06, 09:26 PM I didn't agree with DVDTalk's review of the PQ for Sky Captain, which I thought looked great, so I may not agree with their reveiw for the Italian JobYou might not :D, but it is worth noting that those reviews were written by two different people. I haven't seen Sky Captain..., so I can't say if I agree or disagree with Josh or not. Kram Sacul 08-02-06, 10:41 PM If it's the same transfer I've seen on cable then watch the opening scene in Venice. The buildings against the overcast sky are haloed with EE. lovswr 08-02-06, 10:50 PM Why does Fett weight the same as a duck?? Becuase he got turned into a Newt! Oh Look, 'Eres some lovely filth over there :D jkv4 08-03-06, 08:42 AM I have seen this on Showtime, it is also another movie that is shot very very soft in some scenes, people are gonna be trashing this also just like Tomb Raider, when it is supposed to look how it looks and in my book that is sweet can't wait for this one :) -Gary I agree 100% Mr. Slob the Knob... ;) Dennis Dickerso 08-04-06, 09:13 PM have any of you seen Sahara on HD DVD yet? I know the movie isnt that great but the PQ left me open mouthed. Sahara looks like the best HD transfers thus far. :D Really? I thought that it was too soft in places, distant portions of the image lacked that HD crisp resolution, I saw edge enhancement too often (unusual for this format) and definite combing on an object in once scene. I was disappointed. obie_fl 08-04-06, 09:28 PM Time to buy it is back down to $17.87 after the 10% discount. I would love to, but Amazon wants 30$ for it :( -Gary Gary Murrell 08-04-06, 09:42 PM I agree 100% Mr. Slob the Knob... ;) WTF!! :( I don't do any knob slobbing ;) -Gary Gary Murrell 08-04-06, 09:43 PM thanks Tom -Gary rover2002 06-22-07, 12:20 AM Hi, I have some weird lines going down the screen in this title, enyone else? They are most clear in contrasty scenes although they are in darker scenes also! zero002021 06-22-07, 12:39 AM Hi, I have some weird lines going down the screen in this title, enyone else? They are most clear in contrasty scenes although they are in darker scenes also! First, are you using a Component or HDMI connection? Second, have you tried any other movies? If so, are the lines visible in those movies? rover2002 06-22-07, 04:08 AM First, are you using a Component or HDMI connection? Second, have you tried any other movies? If so, are the lines visible in those movies? HDMI. Only this movie. I'm going to send it back to Amazon & get something else. rover2002 12-10-07, 10:17 PM This is not the first Paramount release to garner bad PQ reviews. Paramount needs to get their act together. And lets say, go HD DVD exclusive? :D kezug 01-30-08, 05:51 PM Ok, I just received my 5 freebies and fired up my A2 with my Panny LCD HDTV (32-LX700) using HDMI 1.3a monoprice cables. While I have not used any calibration discs, I did change the settings to those of someone elses which toned down color and brightness, etc... I have turned off all the imagery manipulators on my TV and my settings on A2 are Enhanced Blacks - Off RGB output range - Standard Picture Mode - Auto Resolution Setting Up to 1080i But really, any settings here will give me the same issues I see. To me, Italian Job was very grainy. I have some pics, but WARNING. This is the first time I have posted a pic of an image on my TV. My Camera is a Sony Cybershot 5MP DSC-V1. A nice digital camera. I didnt use flash or a tripod. The pics show grooves/curved lines, that are NOT there. I think I was just too close. But I wanted to show you the artifacts I am seeing. These are best to be described as "dirt spots" that you would normally seeing when watching a movie at the theater. They just pop up here and there. I do also see a lot of grain in one particular scene. Ok, so I am just asking you to review and see if what I am seeing is normal and that this is just the flaws of a transfer. Or suggest what I should be doing. Or is this a possible HDMI cabling issue (when a cable is bad, is this was will happen?) If anyone could suggest how to take better pics, I will. Thanks. Notice the dirt blob in the center (http://home.comcast.net/~dougguzek/pic1.JPG) http://home.comcast.net/~dougguzek/pic1.JPG NOTE: The curved lines you see on this pic are from the way I took the pic. It is NOT there. focus on the white blob to the left Notice the white blog to the left (Chapter 5 16:51 (http://home.comcast.net/~dougguzek/pic2.JPG) http://home.comcast.net/~dougguzek/pic2.JPG NOTE: Ignore the curved lines again. Instead here, focus near the Cross to the right. That grain is very visible to the naked eye Notice the Grain to the right around the cross. This is how the entire sky looks in this scene (http://home.comcast.net/~dougguzek/pic4.JPG) http://home.comcast.net/~dougguzek/pic4.JPG v1rtu0s1ty 01-30-08, 06:00 PM Hi Kezug, I believe you in the dirt/debris. I saw it too. But my picture quality isn't grainy though. It was still nice. However, I see white and black debris/dirt popping intermittently on other chapters. I think this is the reason why they gave it to us for free. Looks like the reel has to be cleaned before they transfer it again. v1rtu0s1ty 01-30-08, 06:55 PM here are my screenshots. I saw a black debris/dirt right on the face which appeared like less than half a second. It took me a long time before I was able to pause at the right moment to capture that fly. :p http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/1448/italianjob2qt0.jpg http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/1986/italianjob3vy4.jpg http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/4440/italianjob1mf7.jpg http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8190/italianjob4yx7.jpg GamerGuyX 01-30-08, 07:10 PM To me, Italian Job was very grainy. Grain is a good thing. Film is supposed to be grainy and not perfectly crystal clear. kezug 01-30-08, 08:41 PM Hi Kezug, I believe you in the dirt/debris. I saw it too. But my picture quality isn't grainy though. It was still nice. However, I see white and black debris/dirt popping intermittently on other chapters. So some "Dirt" is also detected on others HD DVD/setup. Now I just have to compare the "grain" that I am seeing. Any chance you or anyone can post a shot of that "cross" in the first chapter (time 3:19)? How are you taking those snapshots, any tricks to taking the pic so as to get the same quality as what you see (or very near)? |
