Hi,
I have a Sony KP-53HS10 (made in 2000, 4x3 set capable of 480i, 480p, 1080i -- has ONE input (COMPONENT ONLY) capable of those advanced modes, rest of inputs are component at only 480i, or svideo).
Some of you will recognize the set as being the one with the bug in it that causes any high def signal to reset and reacquire the 'mode' on a very light to very dark transition. Fixable via a few resistor changes on a motherboard, and not worth it. I have locked the set into 1080i mode via the service menu, which eliminates almost all of the nuisance/effects of the bug.
My current input to the (only) high-def-capable input jack (component video cable) is my high def TIVO from direct TV. Love it. Works well, and both the set AND the tivo are locked into 1080i mode to 'work around' the bug in the TV set that causes it to lose sync.
My current audio/video receiver is only doing audio, it's also about 6 years old, SONY ES 333 -- svideo and composite switching only, no component. I had a DVD player hooked up by component video to a second input on the TV but that input only supports 480i. Life was 'ok'. (and had to switch TV and audio inputs to switch between tivo and dvd, but hey no big deal).
Well, the 6 year old dvd player died, and I would like to get a new one.
Budget has me probably staying with the same TV for a while. So, I know I could just get a cheap replacement DVD player and watch 480i, but I am tempted to get a progressive scan or 1080i dvd player and find some darn way to make all this work.
If I were to get a audio/video receiver that supports component video switching, AND a DVD player that supports 1080i output ON COMPONENT VIDEO INSTEAD OF ONLY ON HDMI then I could hook the tivo and dvd player to the receiver, and output 1080i component video to the set.
Will a DVD player look better in 480p or 1080i? I played with both on the tivo and thought 1080i looked better than 480p, so that's what my set is LOCKED to.
And of course if I do get a receiver I would like it to be decent enough to attach to a replacement TV set I'll probably get in a year or so. Anyway, that's probably more data than anyone wanted to read for now. Any suggestions?
