View Full Version : Cleaning a Da-Lite

I have a Da-Lite tab tensioned Cosmopolitan Electrol with a Pearlescent surface. The rear surface has developed a stickiness to it. I have cleaned the back with Simple Green about every six months. Later it will start to hesitate going down and I know it is time to clean again. Early this week, it got about half way down and stuck to the drum and went back up and jammed. I thought it was time for the trash. We took it down and took it apart. We unrolled it and the only damage was a crease across the middle. We put it back together and re hung it. After hanging for a few hours the crease disappeared. I need to find out what to clean this thing with. I sure don't want something like this to happen ten years from now. We are senior citizens.

I had Da-lite Tensioned Cosmopolitan Electrol too with HCCV screen material. I had similar problem to you. After only 1+ year, the screen developed a stickness both on the front and back of the screen. The bad thing was that, the coating of sticky stuff on the projection surface severely affected projection quality. I contacted my local Da-lite dealer/distributor and they were no help other than saying that I could trying cleaning with mild detergent. I tried cleaning both the front and back surfaces with mild detergent, but could never completely remove residue on the screen surface which of course was visible during projection.

The screen also developed severe waves despite being a tensioned screen and that was just over a year old. Again I contaacted my local dealer/distributor and they were of no help at all. They asked me to take a photo and they would send the photo to Da-lite and asked for help. But in the end, there was no help :(

It seemed that the only solution they offered was to change the screen material, but the cost was about 80% of ordering a new screen. So of course I declined. Now I have changed to a Stewart Firewawk screen and couldn't be happier with both the screen quality and service of the Stewart dealer. I am not saying you should change to a Stewart, but I am just truly disappointed with quality and services of Da-lite screens. I hope you will have better luck than me!

Thanks for the replies. Roland: It sure sounds like we have had a similar situation. My first screen shrunk in the middle. When they ship to a place like Arizona, they should put more tension on the cables. When they sent me a new one, the first thing I did was take a link out of the tension cables. I bought my first one in 1999 and the screen that they replaced it with was built in April of 2001. I bought mine from Cinemasource. They are the ones who went to bat for me.

It would be nice if Blankenship would chime in here. That is if he still works at Da-Lite.

I also have a DaLite Tab Tensioned HCCV with the same condition. I contacted DaLite and asked them what to do - they said that if my screen was manufactured after 2001 then I should clean it with Simple Green. I told them that I purchased it in January 2001 - they said it "should be" ok. I said what would happen if I had one previous to 2001 - they said that without the additional coating they began applying in 2001 it could damage the reflective area of the screen.

I also have now what appear some sort of surface damage from the sticking that are visible during viewing. I have yet to clean the screen and try to leave it down most of the time, but it goes right back to sticking when it is rolled up again.

Needless to say I am somewhat pissed. This thing was a bitch to install - I would hate to have to do it again. I have not been very pleased by the response from DaLite. If I could get maybe a 50% exchange credit I would (maybe) be less perturbed, but just having to scrap it and start over is not acceptable. I will not buy another DaLite product in the future.

Ken:

If you remove the cover at the end of the screen, the one to get at the wiring, on the back side of the cover should be a label with exact build date.

That was exactly my problem. I cleaned the front and back surfaces and once I rolled up the screen, the sticky stuff just got deposited on both the front and back surfaces again. I also tried to leave it down most of the time after I cleaned it, but the screen still needed to be rolled up occasionally and the whole process just happened again and again. plus the fact that it was either not really totally possible to remove all the deposit or residue form the projection surface, which was visible during projection and my screen also developed severe waves. If paying 80% for the price of a new screen just to change the screen material would guarantee that the whole thing wouldn't happen again, I might have considered. but of course there was no guarantee and neither Da-lite or my local dealer/distributor could offer an explanation as to why it ahppend and how to prevent it, I had no option but to change to another brand. I am now very happy after changing to a Stewart Firehawk. needless to say, I would never buy another Da-lite screen again or recommend anyone to buy one.

Ken:

If you decide to try and clean the screen, don't use Simple Green straight. Da-Lite said to do that about a year ago and have since changed. I used it straight on the back of mine and it just made every thing worse. Now we have been trying to get that stuff off with plain water.

I'll eventually try to do the cleaning, but I wish Da-Lite would give very explicit instructions on what/how to do it. Plus, I don't even like the idea that I have to perform cleaning at all! If I have an adult NS household and basically put the screen down to watch something, then put it right back up again, then the issue that a residue forms at all is disturbing. For me, this is as bad as a Firestone Tire on Ford Explorer - if they have a defect in their product they should be bending over backwards to make it right!

Anybody mention class-action lawsuit?

Ken:

Go to the Da-Lite web site and there is a tab that says e-mail. Tell them that you want to clean the screen and they will send instructions. If it still says to use Simple Green straight, don't do it.

I think Angie of Da-Lite told me the date was April of 2002. Don't clean the front until you find out for sure.

I totally agree. the point is why should there be a deposit on the screen in the first place? Does Da-lite even have any idea what the problem is? If so, would just come clean and admit the problem and give us a solution. We shoud not have to clean the screen every time we roll it up and down again. there should be a permanent cure for the problem. Does Da-lite care at all????

I sent exchanged a flurry of emails with them a few months back - this is what I got (including this attachment Cleaning Tensioned Screens (http://home.elp.rr.com/kenrivera/Clean.doc)):

Ken,

Jack is out for the week, so I am handling his email. To answer your question, that surface should be cleanable. Anything made in 2002 or after is cleanable, so you should have no problem. To give you a little insight, even if it was a non-cleanable surface, then cleaning it would not destroy the screen. What it would do is wipe off the additional reflective coating that Cinema Vision has. So you would end up with a Da-Mat (1.0 gain) surface instead of the 1.3 gain that you are used to. The reason that we do not recommend cleaning a screen that that would happen to, is because it is very difficult to get ALL of the reflective coating off. It would give you an unevenly reflective screen.

But either way, you are ok. Something manufactured in 2002 will not be a problem.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Jack,

I purchased my screen on 1/18/02, so I assume I have one of the ones that
cannot be cleaned. So, then what can I do to fix my problem with the screen
"sticking" when it is being unrolled? This is not something I want to live
with permanently. Worse yet, the sticking continues to get worse until
something else breaks.

I'm sorry, Ken, but Cinema Vision manufactured before 2002 may not be
cleaned by any means. Cinema Vision screens manufactured in 2002 and
thereafter may be cleaned by the method described. Please let me know if
you have more questions.

Hi Jack,

Your instructions state "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN CINEMA VISION....." -
my screen is a cinema vision. So, what should I use to clean it?

Thanks.

below. To prevent a recurrence, allow your screen to hang extended for a
day or two every few weeks. I hope this informatiuon is helpful. Thanks

Sticking Da-Lite Cinema Vision 131" screen.

My screen is about 4 years old, but about 6 months ago I started having
some problems with sticking when the screen is unrolled. Is there
something I can do to keep it from sticking?

I would like to know where this sticky stuff comes from. It must have been put there during the manufacturing process. It seems that Da-Lite makes a very good case and mechanism. They just don't know how to make a screen. I would think that a screen should never need to be cleaned.

An update...

I called Da-Lite on Thursday and talked to one of their specialists. After discussing my discontent with the sticking and the permanent marks (which are visible upon viewing) which have been caused by the sticking they have agreed to replace the screen.

They will be sending me a replacement screen on roller. I will have to pull down the screen and exchange the roller, then send the old one back to them.

Bob, they said that the sticking is caused by the vinyl materials used. Apparantly, the vinyls leetch-out something or another which causes the stickiness. They appear to have reformulated the chemical make-up to eliminate the problem - I hope they're right.

I'm not looking forward to pulling down my screen - it was a bear of an install. But, all things considered I will be very happy to get back to normal.

Holy Cow!! Can you imagine how many screens are involved? I thought it was something like that. My roller is even sticky. Changing out the roller will be a bear of a job. They should have just sent a whole new screen.

I am encountering the same sticky issue on the front and back of the screen. I cleaned it with mild soap and water and it seemed to clean it ok but not completely. I originally thought I was having problems with the projector because it was effecting the image quality until seeing the residue on the screen and the back being a feel of oily, sticky Vinyl.
I have a tab tension Cosmopoliton electrol with 1.3 Cinemavision image surface.
Has anyone had any luck with any other cleaner. I read of someone trying Pledge on a different brand screen.
Any thoughts would be great.

Guys, I have the same problem. I tried to clean with dish detergent and water but it didn't help. We have two screens mounted next to each other and one is having this problem. I'm afraid the other will start having the same problem. Should I call Da-Lite to get these replaced?

We have this sticky issue with two Da-Lite screens purchased in December 2007. It's unbelievable that they were still selling screens with this defect in 2002 and possibly later. I finally got frustrated enough to either get our screens clean or destroy them in the process. I recently used Sanford Expo White Board Cleaner which seems to have done the trick... It contains "2-butoxy ethanol/acetate, isopropyl alcohol" and so maybe it will eventually turn the screen into a puddle of goo, but so far so good.

Hi Folks

I am thoroughly impressed by the various tips etc I found while searching for a method to clean my Da-Lite High Contrast Da Mat screen.

I tried warm water and it made even more streaks.

I then tried denatured alcohol - and although this method certainly seems to remove streaks, again I found new streaks appearing.

I used low-lint rags (the closest thing to dustless that I could find) to wipe the denatured alchohol onto the screen and then seconds later I used a clean rag to wipe it off.

If I put copious amounts of alchol on the rag and clean a section with one long stroke it seems to work well. I then very quickly wipe the alcohol off, again in one long stroke. But moments later small streaks will appear on either side of the cleaned section (and if I am not careful also in the middle where if I did not wipe it clean fast enough).

Can anyone please advise... can anyone see something I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
David

As noted on another thread, very hot water alone does a fabulous job. I just cleaned mine that way, using vertical strokes on 18" sections at a time, and drying with a soft terry towel, I cleaned the front screen surface twice and the back once. The sticky stuff is gone and the screen is now without any streaks and noticeably brighter -- like new.

I fell into the same trap as the rest of you. I have a Dalite, Damat. It felt sticky so I tried cleaning it with dilute soap and water. The screen became very streaky. I tried cleaning and scrubbing to no avail. The hot water trick also didn't work. Out of desperation I tried Windex. It worked beautifully. No more streaks. The surface is very matte after cleaning but I think that it makes the image look better. I suspect that the gain may be somewhat reduced but I couldn't tell.

I'm thinking of purchasing a 92" tensioned cosmopolitan electrol, does the sticky substance still ooze out of new screens, or was this only an issue with older screens and has since been fixed?

I am disgusted by the support answers that Da-Lite gave above (Ken, thanks for posting). Agreed, if there is a known issue, don't hide behind language like Don't clean your screen under any circumstances or you will reduce your gain... I can't even use my screens if they're doubled back on themselves, wrapped around the spool the wrong way, and the weight has passed over the faceplate's ridge. One screen was so bad that it pulled the Da-Lite nameplate right off. Take that!

I have a feeling that the vinyl will leach out for the life of the product, so they're unwilling to give an answer until you say "replace my screens." Let's hope the chemical isn't toxic since we're all getting so intimate with it. Has anyone tried adding talcum powder? I know it will make a horrible mess on the black side panels, but if it doesn't get too gummy, it may work to lube the screen. I used Simple Green today, and it just smeared. Other times, I have just wiped my palms across the screen and the tackiness was temporarily reduced.

PS: On a positive note, if you play football, wipe your hands on the screen and it works like Stick-em! Yay! Super Bowl here I come! Watch me on your Da-Lite screen! (unless it's all jacked up, of course)

I've had my Da-Lite Cosmo Electrol Tab Tensioned HCCV screen since about 2003. It stays rolled up all the time unless I'm watching a movie. I've never had any problems until the past 6 months or so. I started noticing more texture to the screen and then started noticing some horizontal marks in certain places. When I went up to touch the screen, I noted the sticky feeling that has been mentioned here.

I tried using a wet cloth (albeit not very hot water) and had no success. I then read this thread and tried the Windex. Windex took the greasy/sticky film off, but it left tons of streaks (just like it always does when I try to use it on windows). So I tried what I use on my car windows--Stoner's Invisible Glass and a microfiber cloth. That worked perfectly! Took a little work to make sure I got the whole surface cleaned well and evenly, but it looks 100% better. I don't think it changed the reflectivity, but of course I can't say for sure. It actually seems brighter, but maybe that's just because I got the sticky film off, that couldn't have been helping.

Hope this helps someone.

Stoner's worked for me. Thanks for the suggestion. I think it's because Stoner's gets sticky stuff like sap off. But you'll lose the gain.

Has anyone had any luck with Da-Lite? I called and they played pretty coy about the screen issue, but a call to the local dealer showed that it's a very common issue. Why bother paying the premium for Da-Lite when I could buy three cheapie Elite screens for the same price?

Unbelievably the folks at Da-lite decided that putting typical Gaffers tape on to hold the screen in place on the spindle is good enough for a long term solution. As one would imagine, the tape degrades over time since it's not intended for that use (especially in our space where it gets really hot up near the ceiling)... then it starts to slip and ooze the sticky residue onto the screen which works its way all around as it's rolled up and down over a 6 month period.

Of course, this happens more than 1 year into the life of the screen, so we are all SOL.

Did someone say Class Action?

Just open up your screen and unroll it completely and you'll find out the madness. We're using a 1.5 year old Cosmopolitan Electrol 12' screen (not tension)

If anyone gets any replacements it'd be great to know about! I'm definitely calling Da-lite Monday to complain

I currently have a Da-lite high power screen that is about 2 years old. It is a model C with CSR. During cleaning, a small 1 inch damage was done since the coating came off. Of course, there is no easy repair according to Da-lite. Now I am about to pull the trigger on a Da-lite Cosmopolitan electrol high power. The screen will be in the family room where temperature and humidity is well controlled. Is this sticky thing still an issue that I need to be worried about?
Is this a problem specfic to the electric screens? The previous screen was down most of the time so maybe that is the reason why I don't see the stickiness issue on the existing screen. The new electrol will be rolled up and down every day (probably only once a day). Is it robust enough to last for years?
Thanks.

I too have this problem on a 119" electric Tensioned Cosmopolitan Electrol 1.3 gain (Cinema Vision) screen. This problem eventually affects the image quality to a point that I can no longer live with. It is really sad that Da-Lite is not

1.) Fixing the problem - once and for all.

2.) Treating their customers better.

I think the following would be a fair resolution:

Since I have enjoyed the screen for a number of years - I am not expecting a free replacement. After all - I have gotten some value out of owning it. However, for Da-Lite to profit from their poor quality, at a loyal customer’s expense, is not acceptable.

I would however agree to pay their cost of the replacement material on a roll. This would seem to be fair. After all - I still have to cover the cost of removing the screen from the ceiling, replacing the roll, re-hanging the screen and adjusting the screen. Da-Lite would not be loosing any money on the deal and they would be keeping a loyal customer who has owned a half dozen or more Da-Lite screens over the years.

Asking a loyal customer to pay profit to Da-Lite and the dealer mark up on a quality issue is just unacceptable.

A Da-Lite representative can feel free to PM me to set up the arrangements. Otherwise - I will be going to a different company for all of my future screen purchases.

I have cleaned my HP 2.8 with denatured alcohol and 2 micro fiber rags. One I wet with alcohol and the other I dry with after I wipe and area evenly. Set your projector to display a blank white image while you clean, it helps you see where you have and have not wiped, If it is an hp you will still see some darkness until it is completely dry. I do not use water because it lease residue and makes the screen dark. If you do not have an HP, it would be helpful if you tell use what fabric you have so others can give advice. If you want to test for yourself, order some samples of your screen fabric from Dalite to test cleaners on it.

My issue is that I can clean it, but I don't plan on cleaning my screen every time I roll it up and down. The residue is all over the back of the screen, so every time it gets rolled up, it happens again. So cleaning procedures are great, but it doesn't solve the problem.

Same problem -- Cosmopolitan, sticky front and rear.

Response from Da-Lite:

Good afternoon! Thank you for your email. It sounds like the plasticizers in the vinyl material may be migrating. This can happen sometimes with vinyl products, and it ends up making them look oily or become sticky. This can be triggered by changes in humidity or temperature, or if the material is rolled up on itself for long periods of time and not allowed to "breathe" periodically. I would recommend cleaning the surface with denatured alcohol, which you can usually find the the paint section of most hardware stores, and a bunch of clean, soft, cotton (prefereably white) cloths. I would apply a generous amount of denatured alcohol to the cloth and wipe the screen in horizontal strokes, making sure to clean both sides. Rolling the screen down every couple of weeks and letting it breathe should keep it from happening again.

So....I did. Used some two dozen new rags, CRITICAL to avoid simply moving the contaminant from one spot to another. Cleaned small (2 sq ft) section at a time, turning and rewetting rag every few strokes. Overlapped each section, horizontal strokes.

IMPORTANT: don't judge the result right away. Wait 24 hours. Most streaks disappeared as alcohol evaporated overnight. Recleaned a couple of remaining streaks next day (with new rags).

Did back with same general method -- more difficult because it required someone to hold screen away from wall.

Screen now appears about as good as new. Surprising how much light was being absorbed by the surface contaminant. Dramatic improvement.

Hope this helps.

I also have a 106" Dalite Cosmopolitan electrol tensioned with cinemavision.
It started becomeing sticky a coupple of years ago and it is getting worse and worse.

I can get it off with hot water, it takes a few times over before its all gone, but its back in a week or 2. In the beginning the cloth only turned gently yellow when wiping but nowdays its *orange* really disgusting.

I have cleaned it with redspirits aswell and it works but hot water does the same.

If this weren´t enough I have small black spots on the screen because Dalite had problems with their roof at the time they made my screen (yay) I did get a new and much more costly scaler from the dealer to make up for it, and I took the deal becasue I didnt want to change out the screen (too much of a hassle).

If this weren´t enough, the screen isn´t flat in the lower corners either no matter how I screw the tension screws.

I mailed all this to Dalite 2-3 years ago and the answer was that I could get a new roll for 50% of the cost of a new one, but that was still about $1600 I had to shell out so I didn´t do it.

Now Im getting really annoyed by this, yes the screen is still stickier then ever.

I was looking at this cheap "Dreamscreen V2 Dynagrey" its a manuel screen and its only $340 wich is the cheapest I can find where I live. Im looking at grey because I have white walls and ceiling, I painted 60cm black in the roof infront of the screen but the room is still mostly white.

Im thinking that even if its a cheap screen it might look even better then the dalite because the Dalite is over 10 years old so something should have happened in this time with the quality of screens. And also since I now have a JVC 350 and not the Barco 808 the grey should help the picture instead of the 1.3 I now have.

I honestly havent been looking at screens at all since I got this so I dont know if im right or not, but at least it wont be sticky :D

Someone furter up said sometyhing about tape inside the roll wich is the source of the stickyness. I doubt it since it seems to come out of the vinyl from the entire back, but has someone looked into this? It might be doable to remove it and reattatch the screen?

Another thing I thought about, what about putting the cheap screenmaterial in the Dalite cassette? That way I still have an electric screen. Hey maybe I could get another better brand and just get the material and switch with the sticky one and that way I could get an even better screen for the money (since just the material should be cheaper then the whole thing)

I dunno...something has to be done. I was considering givng it away for free to the first one coming to pick it up, but maybe one could use the case and motor?

So I changed the material in the screen.

Somebode higher up said something about the stickyness coming from teip they used to fasten the screen. Well, when I unrolled the screen as far as possible it almost came off by itself, with a little help it slided off very easy with this loud sticky noise. Yes the screen was taped into place and the teip was sticky like nothing you have ever seen.

After getting the roll out of the casette the teip came off easy but the glue from the teip was still on the roll and omg it was like a mm thick. It took me several hours to clean it, I had to scrape it off with a knife and then wash it with alcohol many many times. I wish I had taken a photo of the sticky glue-ball i collected :D

I still dont know if the glue can really make the entire screen sticky, yes it felt exactly like the stickyness on the screen, but if the teip is the source, then wouldnt the screen be uneven sticky, with the most of it being on top and then gradually less? Mine wasnt, it was evenly sticky. And also the very last end of the screen doesnt roll up against the roll so it shouldnt be any stickyness on the very last bit of screen, but there were, so I suspect its not the teip after all.

If someone is thinking about throwing his screen away only because of this and the screen is fine in other regards then it could be worth a day to get it off, clean it, clean the roll and then reattatch and see if it works.
