View Full Version : Where are the Music HD-DVDs?
dmccombs 08-06-06, 11:34 AM I think Toshiba would sell more players if:
1) They enabled 5.1 TruHD through a firmware upgrade.
and
2) The Studios started releasing TruHD Music CDs.
Sales of regular Music DVDs are on the rise. SACD, and DVD-A sales never took off because you need special players. Toshiba could offer people the chance to have High Res sound and HD-DVD movies using the same player.
I think this could be the "killer app", but so far TruHD has hardly been utilized. Toshiba has gotten off to a good start with HD-DVD, but I think they missing the boat if they don't quickly get TruHD going.
Personally, I want high res audio, but don't want to invest in SACD or DVD-A. The formats aren't growing and require a different player. DVD does offer DD 5.1 which is ok. In general the DVD DTS titles sound better. I think most of the groups that go to hassle to use DTS make the effort to make the sound better quality (less compression).
TruHD would sound great, and would sell lots of HD-DVD players. what is Toshiba waiting for? I know if they don't offer this until Gen 2, I will be pissed and will buyer someone else Gen 2 player, not Toshiba's.
The HD-A1 is a great video player, but it needs the audio to go with it.

Darrell
ryoohki 08-06-06, 11:38 AM Multichannel Audio is abandonned anyway, the only thing staying are the Dual Disc with DD5.1 sound WHEN it have it. People have spoken and don't care about high rez audio (general people).
We are freaks out there in a sea of people that don't really care.
What i want is at least a DD Tru HD on shows. I know that U2 have a DD Plus track wonder how it sounds...
"Live", the Alison Krauss and Union Station concert album and DVD, was shot in HD (I remember an interview with the band where they talked about the process, but I can't find it now). Since the DVD was released by Universal, I have high hopes it won't be long before we can enjoy that show in all its glory.
EDIT: I think I misread the original post, I thought it was a request for more concert HD DVDs, not HD DVD-Audio. Sorry, my bad.
Dave Mack 08-06-06, 11:50 AM Unfortunately most people I know listen to their music now on tinny, highly compressed mp3's. They load up their ipod with the most songs possible, lowest sound quality. Then they either hook it up to one of those crappy Bose docks or laptops. And yet they still think it sounds good. ick...
William 08-06-06, 12:36 PM It would be nice to see studios release something like a concert HD-DVD with TrueHD and have a studio 5.1 True HD audio only track included. However it is a travesty to release any music (or film) on HD-DVD with lossy compression. It is (past) time for 100% TrueHD releases.
dmccombs 08-06-06, 12:56 PM Ryooki,
I disagree that people don't care. I think those of us that want hires audio are just a bit early. One of the reasons DVD replace VHS was the image quality AND the audio quality were much better. How many DVDs do you enjoy that don't have that 5.1 sound?
If they want this standard to stick, they need to nail the HD picture and HD audio.
Even if you are right that HD-DVD is currently for the Videophile, aren't most videophile also audiophiles to some degree (thus the term AV in this forum's title :p ).
HD-DVD will miss lots of buyers/supporters if they have to buy another type player for their HD audio.

I know but there won't be any other High Rez Audio format other than PCM 5.1, DTS Master Audio and DD Tru HD. Those are the format right now and they can be supported my Amp and Integrated into the HD DVD/BluRay Player.. Loseless is Loseless there's no need for another Loseless format..
People can buy cheap 200$ fully integrated + 5.1 speaker entertainment system. Those system don't really takes advantage of the new audio because of their less quality. I mean i own a separate amp (not big but a 1000$ Yamaha still 98% of people i know don't have this) and speakers (B&W). I ear the difference between DD and DD Plus, but most people wouldn't on their system..
dmccombs 08-06-06, 01:38 PM Ryoohki,
I think you are mixing today and tomorrow. The amps will eventually support the TruHD standard. For now the HD-DVD players can decode it.
This is like DTS was in the beginning. Originally the DVD players had to decode. Now, most receivers decode DTS.
And I do think most people that have an HD-A1 will hear a difference on thier audio system between DD5.1 and TruHD. How many people have an HD-A1 and a $200 audio system?
I'd bet you hard cash that most of the people that buy the HD-A1 have at least a decent audio system. Anyone that is watching HD-DVD and listening to the sound through thier TV speakers should have thier player taken away. ;)

Darrell
DigitalOBX 08-12-06, 12:52 PM SACD Rocks!!!....I would be a happy camper if Music HD Audio (TrueHD 5.1) would go mainstream....the future is here.
Glen Mulder 08-12-06, 02:16 PM I have a lot of SACD's and i think we should get a petition going to send to the Music companies to get them re-released on Dolby True hD or DTS hd, they could use the same mixes as most SACD's were good 5.1 mixes.
Would love to hear Dire Straights and Pink Floyd in hD

Dark side of the Moon kicks ass, been looking for Dire Straights - guess I have to order it.....
I even put the SACD in the Tosh - you know what..... it worked(except no surround speaker output :( )
I would be nice for us who actually cares/have the HomeTheater/High End Components but I would rather have Studio's put all their attention releasing HD-DVD's...!!!

I guess I am greedy ;)
More HD DVDs - of course
But SACD seems to be a dying breed(as far as mainstream) and we need Audio HD DVD to kick start this in a positive manner IMO..... :)

Of course it works. It has a CD layer that will play in any CD player.
I always thought DVD-Audio's typical inclusion of a multichannel (although it was lossy) surround track was better than a CD layer on an SACD. With the multichannel track, there was a reason to purchase a disc you already had a CD of even if you didn't have a DVD Audio player. In the meantime you could listen to the DTS or DD 5.1 sound on your DVD player. With SACD, if you had the CD there was no reason to buy it until you had an SACD player.

I do have a SACD player (an old Sony) and of course the HDA1, but I am using my Denon 5.1 analogs for the HDA1 for the audio, so I can not enjoy SACD right now without disconnecting a slew of interconnects.....I need to buy a 5.1 switcher.
And I might be wrong but SACD is the only true 5.1 audio available today....that is why I am pro Music HD DVD.....a replacement ? hope so!!

You would be wrong ;)
DVD-Audio is "true 5.1" music. Heck, even without a DVD-A player its true 5.1 audio because of the DD or DTS 5.1 on the disc.
I have a DTS CD of Boyz II Men thats "true 5.1" :p
Of course its only lossless if you have a DVD-A or a SACD player, but thats not what you said...and DVD-A is lossless 5.1 too so...

Stand corrected - DVD A would be included as well....
But Audio HD DVD would be a major step forward :)

Care to explain how same is "a major step forward", fanboy? :p
I think SACD was pretty good from a consumer standpoint, geat 5.1 and most were backward compatible to CD. Trouble is it still failed and I dont see why HD DVD should be anymore sucessful for music, for music videos it might to well though.

Well, how many people do you think watch their DVD on a 2 channel system or worse on their TV speakers?
dmccombs 08-14-06, 12:50 PM Ned,
A lot of people watch DVDs on 2CH setups, but a lot of people use 5.1 sound for thier movies and the Music DVD sales are increasing.
I think people with even moderate quality 5.1 audio systems will hear a difference with TruHD, and that Toshiba would sell more players by adding this function.

The OP was asking about music-only releases, as in albums.
deandob 05-08-07, 07:39 PM Dragging up an old thread....
After a recent audio upgrade to my theater, I can really appreciate the differences that the new audio formats bring with HD-DVD. It would be great if there were plans to release more HD-DVD music videos with DD TrueHD and DTS-HD (lossless). With these codecs, we should be able to enjoy audio quality with 24bit/96Khz that surpasses redbook CD and even multi-channel with video to boot!
Any news on more HD-DVD music videos with these audio formats being released? There are a couple of music HD-DVDs available now, but it would be great to see releases of the following:
- Eagles, Hell freezes over
- Fleetwood Mac, the Dance
- Pink Floyd, the wall (its a movie but very music orientated)
- Releases from other artists who think audio / mastering quality is important (Roger Waters, Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos etc).

Well, I think Hell Freezes Over and The Dance were shot on SD video, so they wouldn't be released. Yeah, the sound could be improved, but I don't see them releasing it that way.
The Wall is something I would love, but bear in mind it's Sony, so it would be BD only. I heard that Lowry has restored this, but there has yet to be a re-release of the 1999 DVD (new packaging doesn't count). I don't know what they're waiting for.
One thing I would like to see released is Aerosmith's Unplugged show, which was shot in HD way back in 1990. I remember MTV making a big deal of it at the time and showing it letterboxed. It would be interesting to see what early HD looks like.
deandob 05-09-07, 03:45 AM Even if the video was SD but the audio was 24/96 lossless I'd still buy it for the sound quality. In fact, even if music only disks were released as 24/96 lossless I'd be interested but I don't think that is going to happen.
Hopefully after summer we will see more music released on this format.
Frank Derks 05-09-07, 04:52 AM Add three more to the bunch:
Deep Purple, Santana and Yes

Santana is one of my favourites, so I'll look out for that one. Not much info on it, but I found one site that mentioned it was DD+, not one of the lossless codecs unfortunately, but the video was 1080p.

there is a lot of truth to this. however, the studio also never released much on DVD-audio. i was very interested, but they never released anything much i wanted so i stopped bothering to even look after a while and never ended up getting. so while perhaps it was doomed to begin with, the studio insured it to be so i would say.
Strangelove1 07-20-07, 08:57 PM i was thinking about this today. it would be so amazing to listen to music in true hd. SACD's aren't lossless, are they? Come on studios!!
