View Full Version : HD DVD Test Patterns
RAFABAMAD 08-06-06, 12:54 PM At the bottom of this post is a link to an iso image of HD MPEG-2 test patterns created by AVS Forum member dr1394. This image when burned to a DVD-/+R will be recognized as an HD DVD by the Toshiba/RCA players. It is not an all-inclusive collection of the authors test patterns, but simply the patterns I was interested in to test my player and display. My primary concern was whether or not the Sony KDF-55WF655 was properly deinterlacing 1080i content, which was brought to my attention by the article "Are You Getting All the HDTV Resolution You Expected?" (http://hometheatermag.com/hookmeup/0506halfrez/) at the Home Theater Magazine website and the AVS Forum thread " Tested and Failed: throwing away half the Resolution by Gary Merson" (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=608670&page=1&pp=30) discussing this. The vertical resolution pattern tests on this disc did provide the answer. Hopefully, any questions regarding these test patterns will be answered by dr1394 or someone knowledgeable in this field. These individual patterns and many more may be downloaded from his website http://www.w6rz.net

Jon Spackman 08-06-06, 01:04 PM Well assuming you have the Dr.'s permission to share these. Thanks! I tried to down load patterns that Pettinen was sharing and hte image was not recognized by the Toshiba. I will gladly give these a try.
PooperScooper 08-06-06, 02:14 PM I burned the iso to a DVD-R and the A1 says "No disc" when loaded. Any suggestions? I've burned 5 - 10 firmware updates for various things onto CD the same way with success. The media is just what's different now.

rolltide1017 08-06-06, 02:17 PM Thank you so much! Is there any special way (or program to use) that you have to burn these?
Also, which color bars should be used to calibrate through HDMI, 601 or 709?
Gary Murrell 08-06-06, 03:01 PM DR. is ok with it, he also has them to download on his website(the .ts files) as Robert mentioned ;)

eitakura 08-06-06, 03:13 PM A newbie question. . .
Are these patterns only relevent for 1080 displays? I have a Panny 1366 x 768, and I'm not sure these would be meaningful on my display.
Thanks.
Bob Sorel 08-06-06, 03:23 PM Is there any special way (or program to use) that you have to burn these?
Try ImgBurn 2.0

bakpakva 08-06-06, 04:00 PM Thanks for the iso file. I downloaded and uncompressed it with the built in Windows XP extraction. Then used dvd decryptor to burn the iso to a dvd-r disc. No problem recognizing it on the RCA HD-DVD. Didn't have time to go through the tests, just verified that the player would recognize it.
Jon Spackman 08-06-06, 04:10 PM IMGburn did the trick. Thanks
If we could only get some more info as to what the patterns are suppose to look like and what it means when/how they can be different from reference. I was excited to see that the disc played perfectly with the intro credit for dr. and all.
Thanks

Because you used DVD decryptor...

DVD DeCrypter is what ImgBurn was called before the MPAA lawsuit (minus the DVD ripping part)
bakpakva 08-06-06, 04:24 PM So it's not a straight iso burn (copy) to DVD? Because you used DVD decryptor...
larry
It is a straight burn, once you have the iso file. It is zipped when you download it. Just don't make the mistake of unzipping it with winRAR like I did the first time, or it will extract it into individual files. The file you want to burn is called hdtestparterns.iso. Use whatever program you are familar with. I just happen to like DVD Decrypter as I already have it on my computer (for other purposes). :D
PooperScooper 08-06-06, 04:52 PM ImgBurn worked! First I've had a problem with my other (free) program. It is the first DVD iso I've burned with it, though. Judging from the pluge on this disc the SD DVE disc patterns get you the same brightness setting; and contrast for that matter. The ramps look the same.

Jon Spackman 08-06-06, 06:50 PM I wonder if the Toshiba is really playing this as Hd and not upconverting it like any other dvd file. The reason I say this is because when you navigate thru a Hd DVD there are no arrows, play icons etc, but on these "HD" patterns it has them like on a SD DVD. So Are we really getting HD patterns or the same patterns as upconverting Avia or DVE?
RAFABAMAD 08-06-06, 07:34 PM As I mentioned in my original post, my intention was to determine whether my tv was properly deinterlacing 1080i content. All but one of the vertical resolution patterns contain alternating black/white 1 pixel strips that will test for this. If the display shows solid thin black and white strips without flashing then it is properly deinterlacing 1080i. Some of the patterns include motion and 3:2 pulldown as some displays deinterlace properly until motion is introduced over the area of those pixels. For example, my tv flashes all the alternating black/white 1 pixel strips. It is my understanding that it is taking a single 540 line field (1920x540) and doubling it (called bobbing), instead of weaving the next 540 line field with it and then scaling to the display's native resolution of 1366x768. So, my set is not properly deinterlacing 1080i content and I can't experience the full glory of HD DVD like many of you can.
I am curious to know how many of you have displays that properly deinterlace 1080i, if you would care to respond.
As far as the rest of the patterns go, I am not qualified to comment on them.

Jon,
Always the pessimist, huh? I'm just trying to provide easy access to something I felt might be helpful to others. Jeez! Yes, the patterns are 1920x1080 "HD".

That's a good question. What does the front display of the Toshiba say, DVD or HD-DVD? I'm going to play around with this tonight when I get home but, I'm no expert.

I downloaded the file, unzipped it, opened the ISO file with nero6 and selected DVD-R and burned it. Did a quick play and the HD-A1 seen it at a HD DVD.
These tests are questionable with questionable DVD Authoring Software that created them, with no professional oscilloscope testing from this disc. I wouldn't take these tests as absolute until a professional HD DVD calibration disc is released.

bakpakva 08-06-06, 08:38 PM When playing the disk, it says HDDVD. I have no idea what some of these test mean, but here are my results using the RCA HD player (1.4) and the Panny E700 LCD projector (720p )set to 1080i input through HDMI.
Test 1: Alt. B/W 1,2,3,4 - My top bar flickers, 2nd bar is wide and narrow, and rest ok.
Test 2: 1 pixel full- Flickering, but I do see bars and white spaces clearly
Test 3: 2 Pixel full - no flickering, but lines are thick and thin alternating
Test4: 1234 w/bar: Very weird things happen. Shadowing on the top bar, 5 trailing edges. A few trailing edges on the 2nd bar. The revolving bar is also double near the ends.
Test5: Alt B/W 1234 with moving bar- The revolving bar is doubled, but no flickering or trailing shadows.
Test 6:20-35 cycles: Not sure what to make of this. The panels are not uniform in some of the squares, the first block on row 1, and the first two blocks on row 2 have patterns to them.
Test7: Alt b/w 1 full - seems ok, no flicker
Test8 : Alt b/w 2 full- no flickering, but pattern of lines are 1 dark, followed by 2 ligher thicker bars.
On the color bar tests, I notice a thin darkblue vertical line between the green and magenta bars. Perhaps that is my pixel misalignment?
I stopped at this point. Not sure what it all means. There was a couple of times that the HDDVD player did some weird things when I used the rev and then play buttons during the revolving bar test. It would slow down then speed up playback. Stopping the player and starting over fixed it.
I also noticed jumbled bars when some of the pixel tests started, for just a brief moment, then the lines would become clear. It was like it was locking onto the signal or something. Hard to describe.
A fun disk, even though it is beyond me at the present time.
I tried the vert res tests on my Qualia 004. At 1080i/60 into the qualia via DVI through the Lumagen scalar all is fine. At 1080i/60 from the player directly to the Qualia 004 via HDMI all is fine.
At 1080p24sf out of the Lumagen some of the tests fail. I wonder if they should all pass at 1080p24sf or not? In particular Chapter 8 that states it is 1080p24 fails for me at that output resolution, but passes if I send 1080i/60 rather than 1080p24sf to the projector. Chapters 6 and 7 pass fine sending 1080p24sf or 1080i/60 output to the Qualia 004 from the Lumagen Scalar.
I see what's happening. Most of the chapters pass fine on the Lumagen in 1080i/60 or 1080p24sf mode, but some of them are detected as VIDEO and never enter film mode, including chapter 8 which claims to be 1080p24.
For the video detected chapters, the test doesn't pass at 1080p24sf (but passes at 1080i/60). Most chapters fall into film mode quickly and stay there, like chapters 6 and 7 on the disc. For some reason Chapter 8 is detected as video and stays VIDEO despite being 1080p24.
At any rate all chapters pass fine at 1080i/60 some chapters are detected as video and those don't pass when the lumagen is set to 1080p24sf, the chapters that are detected as film pass fine at 1080p24sf or 1080i/60.
For what it's worth the 1080p/24 mastered movie discs are detected as FILM by the lumagen when set to ouput 1080p24sf and they always look fine.
There's a good chance that the 1080p@24 clip is not working as intended. HD-DVD does not allow that frame rate, and I would guess that the Ulead authoring package (I assume that was what was used to build the iso) would have re-encoded the clip. Unless I actually look at the bitstream, I can't say how it would have been re-encoded.
The 4:2:2 Y/C delay pattern is not a good one to include. It could easily lock up the decoder in the Toshiba (unless it's 4:2:2 capable, which opens up a whole new realm of possibilities).

I understand your apprehension. However, I am a professional and I guarantee the accuracy of the original test patterns. Unfortunately, the Ulead authoring package is a wild card since it can re-encode.
I'll have to download the iso and see if I can detect clips that have been re-encoded.

I working on one using Apple's DVD studio Pro 4 which accepts 24p without rencoding the video. (I know the menus, ac3, and h.264 video doesnt work yet) but atleast you can do 24p mpeg2.

Scoping the component video outs with this test disc is the best way to ensure that the test patterns are generated properly as I question the Authoring/Encoding Software used and no the Test Patterns. If you can verify this that will be great! :)
I did use the "Rec. 709 75% Color Bars with Pluge 1920x1080" test pattern to fine tune my HDTV's Color, Tint and Brightness (or Black Level). :)
Thanks...Angelo
Bob Sorel 08-07-06, 12:08 PM Ron (dr1394) worked closely with Scott (GetGray) to develop the GetGray Calibration disc, and during the course of the project the two of them discovered inaccuracies in the "professional" discs - inaccuracies caused mostly by encoding errors. As such the two of them worked closely to insure the utmost accuracy in Scott's calibration disc, and it is the single most valuable test disc in my collection (and I own all but Avia Pro). I have 100% faith in the accuracy of Ron's HD patterns, but as been correctly pointed out, the encoding process may or may not have introduced changes into the original patterns. I would like to hear from Ron before I put too much faith in the accuracy of this .ISO, as what good would it be to use a calibration disc which is not accurate?
Ron really knows his stuff! I personally will wait for his green light before proceeding any further.

For resolution testing, I think the top bar will still flicker even with full res. if you do not have a 1920 x 1080 display. In other words, for a 720p display, 720 lines is the maximum so it's impossible to display 1 pixel wide increments at 1080.
With my Lumagen HDP 1:1 mapped to my 720p Panny ae900 projector, all of the 1-pixel patterns flash and all of the 2 pixel and above patterns were displayed properly.
My Lumagen also stayed in video mode for the 1080p24 film detection chapter.
Those of us with 720p/768p displays need 1280 x 720 patterns I think.
If someone could extrapolate the 20-35 mhz patterns to pixel resolutions that might give an idea of resolution performance to those of us with less than 1080p displays. As I recall, those are only horizontal resolution patterns, though.
The 4:2:2 Y/C delay pattern is not a good one to include. It could easily lock up the decoder in the Toshiba (unless it's 4:2:2 capable, which opens up a whole new realm of possibilities).

I use 4:2:2 currently with the A1. This requires firmware V 1.2 or higher.

Hmm. Don't know why uzun would pass using his Lumagen while mine would fail as the only difference should be our display resolutions. You are seeing alternating black/white horizontal lines in the top box without flickering?
I'll have to play with it some more.
bakpakva 08-07-06, 07:15 PM Using the 720p Optoma H79 w/Vantage HD I get no filckering.
Not sure how you got 1 pixel 1080 without flicker on a 720 projector, but I am happy for you. :D
Passing through the lumagen to the Qualia 004, I dont see any flicker with any of the vertical res patterns at 1080i/60. Most patterns also look solid at 1080p24sf, but some are detected as video and flicker.
Downrezzing to 720p could affect the flickering, certainly.
I do see alternating black and white horizontal lines on the top box with NO flickering in the patterns.

Dang, I need a Qualia :D
I retested and I think it depends on how your scaler is interpreting things. My NEC plasma (1365 x 768) produces the top box bright and without flicker but if you look close it's actually alternating 2 and sometimes even three pixel rows. With the moving bar added to the pattern, the top box flickers and is blank similarly to what it does with the Lumagen/pj combo.
Straight to the 720p AE900 pj bypassing the scaler produces a dark box without flicker and alternating 2 and 3 pixel wide horizontal lines. It also shows the second box as dark with more than 2 pixel wide lines.
I think overall the Lumagen is doing a better job than the Panny pj but I'm not sure where I'd give the nod between the NEC and the Lumagen. My Lumagen top box has zero lines but with constant flicker. The rest of the boxes are perfect with the Lumagen/pj combo (as they are straight to the NEC).
oferlaor 08-08-06, 09:17 AM Very interesting!
How did you guys create this disk (if I may be so bold to ask), is this something anyone can do at home? I for one would love to create HD content & burn it to DVD.

I've verified the video bitstream and here are the results:
1) The first 3 frames of every pattern have been re-encoded. However, the remainder of all the patterns (except the 2 noted below) is the original video bitstream.
2) As I suspected, the "Alternating black/white 1, 2, 3 and 4 pixel strips with moving bar" 1080p@24 clip was totally re-encoded to 29.97 fps. So this pattern is not useful as intended. It's now become a progressive bar encoded at 1080i@29.97 pattern.
3) Also as expected, the 4:2:2 Y/C Delay Bars clip was totally re-encoded. It looks like MF5 was able to decode the 4:2:2 bitstream, but wasn't able to re-encode it at 4:2:0 properly. This pattern is broken and not useful.
4) Most of the transitions from text to/from pattern are clean but a few are a little ragged. However, it's looks like the bitstream errors would be concealed by the decoder, so it's not a big issue. I don't see anything when playing the video bitstream with VLC.
Overall, I'd say it's a success. Users can be assured that these patterns are 100% accurate and will provide the correct results when calibrating.

KTTV Images 10-06-06, 06:36 PM At the bottom of this post is a link to an iso image of HD MPEG-2 test patterns created by AVS Forum member dr1394. This image when burned to a DVD-/+R will be recognized as an HD DVD by the Toshiba/RCA players. It is not an all-inclusive collection of the authors test patterns, but simply the patterns I was interested in to test my player and display. Is 1080 24p Judder elimination possible on Sony XBR2 Rp?
I was able to make a DVD-R disk from W6RZ.net that I can play on my Toshiba HD DVD player at 1080i for testing deinterlacing performance on a Sony XBR1 and XBR2.
The pattern that is most interesting is this: "Alternating black/white 1, 2, 3 and 4 pixel strips with moving bar, 24p video bitstream 1920x1080 ".
My question is this: I appear to be able to play and lock stably to this track on the XBR2 (has 1080p capability) but not in a stable way wth the XBR1 (1080i capable only).
Does this possibly indicate that the Sony XBR2 is capable of handling 24p output for purposes of playback on the display at 24-48-or 72 frames per second to eliminate Judder (this assumes a future HD DVD or Blue Ray player that will output 24 frame 1080p over HDMI)?
It appears to me that the XBR2 may have better 1080p input capability than just 1080p at 30 or 60 frames per second..but it's hard to believe this might be the case.
You input on this would be greatly appreciated.
KT
nathan_h 10-06-06, 06:45 PM The pattern that is most interesting is this: "Alternating black/white 1, 2, 3 and 4 pixel strips with moving bar, 24p video bitstream 1920x1080 ".
Please remember what the good doctor has told us about this test HD-DVD:
2) As I suspected, the "Alternating black/white 1, 2, 3 and 4 pixel strips with moving bar" 1080p@24 clip was totally re-encoded to 29.97 fps. So this pattern is not useful as intended. It's now become a progressive bar encoded at 1080i@29.97 pattern.
So what you are testing is not 24fps.

Here is how I decided I am actually looking at 1080i off the disk I made:
There is a track that contains 20Mhz to 35 mHz horizontal bursts. On my Sony XBR1 it is possible to turn off the DRC (and other enhancement filters) and display the input signals with what appears to be a fairly flat bandpass. The key point is that I can see each multiburst frequency from 20 to 35 mHz as the spacing between V lines decreases (they start at the top left and increase 1 mHz for each burst going to the right --then the 2nd row etc.) . And the 35mHz burst is just barely visible. This would not be possible if I was seeing 480 i or 480p (6mHz +maximum frequency response) upconverted to 1080i.

Thanks. I had missed that post and just found it and now your reply.
Thanks again--mystery solved.

Your deinterlacing test files have been most helpful. Thank you for making them available .
I have a question about the behavior of the 1080i tests (Alternating black/white 1, 2, 3 and 4 pixel strips with or without moving bar 1920x1080) on the new Sony XBR2.
The question I want to address is the potential for Vertical image enhancement systems that may be present in a display under test, to act in such a way as to destroy the usefulness of this test in determining Bob or Weave behavior .
Subjective Image sharpness can sometimes be improved by proprietary enhancement systems operating in both the Vertical and Horizontal directions. The older Faroudja Home Theater line doublers etc. are an example of equipment having this capability.
Improving sharpness does not mean that test signals will look better. In fact the application of enhancement that trys to fool the eye may degrade common multiburst test signals.
Vertical enhancement will require that for a given H line of pixels, the system must look at the state of the pixels (from the previous field ) directly above and below the target row of pixels. Then to vertically sharpen that H line something may be changed on the target pixel and perhaps the pixels above or below the target row.
Mr. Foo, in an XBR2 owners thread, ran a test with an HD DVD test disk made from the files discussed in this thread. He found that with the new XBR2 DRC system (v2.5DRC) turned off the deinterlacing system appears to be regional based motion adaptive. When he turned on the system to Mode1 he found the system had Bob behavior with the top block of H lines flashing. But he found that changes to the amount of Reality (the vertical axis on the DRC pallette) changed the intensity of the flashing. He found the same when he moved the Clarity horizontal axis control. The big finding was that when he set the controls for 25 Reality and 100 Clarity the display again produced the fine H lines typical of Weave behavior and the flashing stopped.
The question is -does this mean the XBR2 in Mode1 may actually be doing a fair-to- good job of deinterlacing but that this may not be easily demonstrated because of possible involvement of the role of Vertical enhancement in the test behavior results?
Whew. I can add that the same test on the XBR1 (V2.0 DRC) shows regional based motion adaptive behavior with mode 1 DRC on or off with little modifcattion as you change the DRC settings. But with the new XBR2 and V2.5 DRC we are seeing the odd behavior described above as we change the DRC settings.
Does anyone have any insight into the meaning of this DRC behavior?
Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Phil Smith 10-09-06, 07:19 PM I haven't read all of this thread. Sorry if my question has been covered. I doubt it has, but just in case.
I need to burn this ts file onto a DVD: "100 IRE White Crosshatch with Circles 1920x1080". It's listed near the bottom of the "W6RZ Homepage". http://www.w6rz.net
I need it to dial in my G70 CRT projector to my HD-A1. I need the cross hatch pattern to do so. I've ripped a bunch of DVDs, but I've never burned one and have no idea how to do it.
How do you burn a ts file to a DVD where an HD-A1 can read it?

I have exactly the same problem. Tried twice by burning the image once with Nero 7.5.7.0 and once with ImgBurn 2.1.0. Both images verified against the ISO file without errors. But when I put them in my Toshiba HD-A1 (2.0 firmware), it treats as a CD and displays the folders only.
Anybody have the secret?
UPDATE: I extracted the contents from the ISO with UltraISO and burned it to a DVD+R using Nero. The DVD was recognized by the HD-A1 as a HD-DVD and worked fine.

it works for me on linux with wine

BuGsArEtAsTy 11-09-06, 11:34 PM OK Mac people, a request for some advice...
I ran Toast to try to burn this ISO and it said it was CSS protected so I couldn't copy it. However, it allowed me to burn it anyway.
The disk won't play on my Mac (which is supposed to support non-DRM'd HD DVD) and it won't play on my (updated) Xbox 360 either (although I don't have an HD DVD drive yet).
I will try MacTheRipper, but is this all I need? If this is a home brew, why is it CSS protected in the first place?

Nope. I just tried MacTheRipper 3 after I mounted this ISO, and it doesn't work. It gives me a VRM error.
Also, DVD Player.app won't play this disc, even though I can navigate it in the Finder.
I then tried DVD Backup to rip it. DVD Backup will see it, but only wants to decrypt the VIDEO_TS folder.
Wesley5 11-10-06, 02:46 AM You are not limited to have to burn a HD DVD-9 disk. You can also use your HTPC to play these ts files directly if it's connected to your TV through either component and/or DVI. It worked well for me a month ago when I got my new TV, using a MyHD-130 card.
nathan_h 11-10-06, 11:56 AM Sounds like the BuGsArEtAsTy is using a Mac, so it's a whole different thing when it comes to burning the ISO. Sure, one can play back the files from an HTPC, but then one hasn't calibrated to one's HD-DVD standalone player.
stanger89 11-15-06, 11:01 PM The disk... won't play on my (updated) Xbox 360 either (although I don't have an HD DVD drive yet).
I can't get it to work in my 360 either, though I do have the HD DVD player. I've tried:
Burning with Nero 6
Burning with IMGBurn
Playing in the HD DVD player - this gets me a black screen.
Playing in the DVD player - this gets me nothing IIRC.
I've been burning to DVD+Rs so far. I remember something about setting the Book Type to data, but is that only necessary when authoring? Since this is authored, should that be taken care of?
trgraphics 11-15-06, 11:19 PM Is there any way to convert this to WMV so that it can be played from the computer harddrive by the xbox 360?

RonCool. Thanks!
The test patterns worked fine with my Toshiba HD-A1, but the XBox360 HD-DVD drive is very finicky. Here's the best that I've been able to do so far for the X360...
In order to keep the image size reasonable, I did not include all of your test patterns. I selected these ten:
crosshatch
overscan crop
ramp
vert rez motion
vert rez 1080
vert pix 1
horz pix 1
burst 1920
IRE bars
phase0
I combined these patterns using videoredo (http://www.videoredo.com). The XBox likes chapter marks much better than separate clips. So I inserted 1 second of blank black frames between the patterns, then inserted chapter marks between each of the patterns using Ulead MovieFactory5+ (http://www.ulead.com/dmf/runme.htm).
In MF5, I selected "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" and MF5 created the image quickly, which is an indication that no re-encoding was done, so the quality of the test patterns should be true to your originals.

Just tried out your 360 zip Clarence, your instruction worked perfectly. Now I just have to figure out what it all means.... So far it appears that 1080i over component offers a little more detail over 1360x768 VGA on my Vizio P50HDM with the Xbox but also has a lot of overscan over component. I must run more tests....
Thanks!
KrisRoberts 11-27-06, 11:12 PM This worked for me too! But I had to log into xbox live and accept an update before the player world work well with the disk. Before the update, it would play but any navigation would cause it to freeze. After the update it seems fine. Thanks!

How could I create pattern's (DVD res.) to play in my DVD player. I have GetGrey but it only contains % values for its grayscale. I use (free) HCFR calibration soft. but it uses IRE values.
I have Photoshop. How do I go about this?
Human Bean 12-13-06, 05:06 PM Thanks Clarence! I've been trying component vs. VGA on my 360; some random observations:
- Too much overscan w/ component (as MarkI mentioned), in my case on a Vizio L37 TV. Too much underscan on VGA (front porch on 360 VGA output too long, can't quite dial-in a screen-filling picture using the TV adjustments).
- Not much PQ difference between component and VGA (downscaling to 1366 by 768 pretty much turns all the high-frequency stuff to grey anyway).
- My display flickers briefly on some of the really high-freq patterns until it figures out how to scale/display it (?)
- Only one pattern in this set with color, but this particular screen seems to cope with the VGA output range fine; colors aren't washed out compared to component.
...Still waiting for DVE to ship, but Clarence's image is a useful stopgap...
Rosso_Corsa 12-20-06, 11:28 PM Clarence, your instructions worked like a charm! MUCH thanks!
About the grayscale ramp (the one with two ramps on the screen), the darkest black bar seems to be clipped for me (below video black, ie below the bar with the 3 dots). White one is fine.
I'm outputting from 360 via component to my Optoma HD72 projector. Is this supposed to be happening?
Using strictly the video black bar (3 dots) to adjust black level yields a result that is *slightly* too dark. On HD Batman Begins, there are scenes were some details are crushed, like one of Alfred's coat buttons. I could up the brightness slightly by eye, but I would prefer to do it via test pattern.
I wonder if this ramp is really from video (and not HD standards) and thus doesn't account for HD's wider dynamic range.
Anyone care to comment?

tattootearz 12-25-06, 04:32 AM Clarence, is there anyway you could try including the new Brightness/Contrast .TS pattern Ron created into your zip?
I think the inlcusion of this pattern would be very beneficial to the more less experienced calibration crowd like myself.
I was able to stream the file over using Windows MCE and HDTVpump... now my black/white levels are dead on, thanks to this pattern. And there was no perceivable way I could do this before as my 360 is connected via Component Video so I cannot upscale... and lock in the 720p on AVIA or GetGray.

UxiSXRD 12-25-06, 11:36 PM Despite the warnings, I tried to do this with Nero 6SE (came with my burner). The HD-DVD plays in the drive, but behaves kinda weird. For example, info shows that it's counting down from -5:39. When it gets to the last test pattern if I hit chapter forward or search forward, it freezes up. When it gets to the last test pattern (w6rz4mt7.PNG above), it also freezes up, though I can still call up the Dashboard, but it won't take any playback commandes (stop, forward, or rewind/scan).
MOrlando 12-26-06, 03:04 PM Anyone try this on an A2000? I haven't been able to successfully burn this yet to test, but curious if the A2000 is properly deinterlacing. I hear way to many conflicting reports.
Can someone please explain what I should be seeing on each test pattern please? In particular the bar pattern where I am supposed to be adjusting brightness and contrast level. Thank you.

I'm unable to open that pattern in VideoReDo, thus I can't add it into the HDDVD.
I get the following error:
"Unable to open needlepulse.ts No PIDs specified when trying to open a transport stream."
If I try Quickstream Fix, I get "File is not an MPEG Program Stream".
But needlepulse.ts plays fine in VLC, so I don't know what the problem is.
My 42A10 is 720P native. So I would just set my set to accept 1080i (from my HD-DVD add on) in order to get these 1080i test patterns to work?

The Brightness and Contrast adjustments should be helpful, regardless of the source resolution. And so should the overscan pattern. But don't expect too much on the single-pixel resolution patterns.

PencilGeek 01-12-07, 01:50 PM After burning the HD-DVD IRE-Window test patterns and testing them, I'm wondering if they are accurate for HD-DVD calibration.
My system consists of a Brillian 6580iFB LCoS HDTV, Lumagen Vision ProHDP video processor, and XBOX-360 w/ HD-DVD option (plus PS3, Denon 3910, etc., etc.). Since the Lumagen gives much greater control over the calibration, and can output 1080p to the HDTV, I have the XBOX-360 HD-DVD output going into the Lumagen, which deinterlaces, and outputs the 1080p. A very nice feature of the Lumagen is the ability to read the IRE value of the frame buffer at the center of the screen. This information is invaluable for HDTV calibration.
On the calibration front, I own all of the necessary ISF calibration gear -- signal generator, colorimeter, and analysis software. It's not bottom-of-the-line junk, as this stuff cost more than my TV, Lumagen, Denon, PS3, and XBOX-360 combined. The XBOX-360 component input to the Lumagen is already calibrated with a perfectly flat grayscale and 2.4 gamma; but I want to calibrate to actual source material -- such as an HD-DVD calibration disc. This paragraph is really just background, and doesn't have any bearing on my actual question -- so keep that in mind.
Now, enter this thread, and the 1080 test patterns at w6rz.net. Since Clarence was kind enough to teach us how to create an HD-DVD disc suitable for XBOX-360, I used this exact method to create such a calibration disc using the w6rz.net IRE-Window test patterns. After following the disc creation procedures verbatim, I had a perfectly playable HD-DVD on the XBOX-360 HD-DVD player.
My first (and only) test was to compare these IRE-Window patterns with the values reported by Lumagen Video Processor. For reference purposes, the GetGray DVD measures absolutely perfect through the Lumagen in all windows from 0-100 IRE. I would expect these test patterns to yield similarly perfect results; but they didn't -- not even close.
Displaying the test patterns and using the Lumagen CTMP command to read the IRE Values at the center of the IRE Window showed values that were *FAR* off of the expected values. These are the values I read:
W6RZ / Measured
100 / 91
90 / 81.5
80 / 72.5
70 / 64.5
60 / 54
50 / 45
40 / 36.5
30 / 27
20 / 17.5
10 / 8
0 / 0
This is a near linear function of difference. So my question concerns how these IRE Window files were created, and whether or not they are accurate. Were they created with PC Levels, not Video Levels? I'm told by Lumagen, that difference could certainly explain the reading errors.
Any ideas?

Or whether the software used to master the 360 version did something that the prior image (that works on the Toshiba player but apparently not on the 360) did not do. That is, some authoring methods end up additional an additional later of processing (such as the fact that the 24fps test patter got converted to 30 or 60fps, as I recall, by the authoring tool for the original disc image).
I wouldn't be surprised in either case.

I'm pretty confident that the MovieFactory-5 didn't re-render the video because the entire process took one or two seconds. When rendering occurs, this time can take hours.
nathan_h 01-12-07, 05:26 PM I don't know, but yes that's a good indication.
Of course Clarence took the images through several more steps, prior to what you did, and while it sounds like they didn't get converted in a material way during his process, I don't know that anyone has done a before-and-after comparison of the patterns, like what was done by dr1394 with the original disc image created from his patterns.
But at this point, my money would be on the 360 altering things, assuming that the original TS files were okay. (You're not using VGA on the xbox, right?)
PencilGeek 01-12-07, 05:43 PM I don't know, but yes that's a good indication.
I did the same exact process that Clarence did: VideoRedo->MF5->Nero7. Followed the steps verbatim -- including enabling the secret menu option in VideoRedo (according the HD-DVD Authoring Guide in this forum).
I'd bet the XB360 output is not to spec, but how to be sure? And more importantly, how to adjust it, or adjust for it? I'm using Component, not VGA output on the XB360.
I've got two or three more things I can try. I can burn a BD disc and play it on my laptop and PS3 into the Lumagen. I can also play the video files directly from my laptop and output to the Lumagen. That should give me three more points of comparison.
Maybe I'll try using my BD-enabled laptop to create a BD
Clarence 01-12-07, 06:25 PM A very nice feature of the Lumagen is the ability to read the IRE value of the frame buffer at the center of the screen.I'd bet the XB360 output is not to spec, but how to be sure? I've got two or three more things I can try...I've also got the Lumagen HDP. I've never tried the IRE frame buffer reading (or is this just on the Pro?). Let me know how to check it and I'll try it with the test disc on my Toshiba HD-A1 to check dr1394's IRE patterns.

It's only availble through the Lumagen service menu (yes, the Lumagen has a service menu). Once service menu is enabled, you hit Menu->IN->COLR->CTMP. CTMP is the gamma adjustment menu. The calculated IRE is displayed at the bottom-center of the screen.
Call Lumagen to get service mode codes, if you don't already have them.
DavidHir 01-19-07, 12:15 AM When comparing component against HDMI (both at 1080i) with my Toshiba HD-A2 tonight.....on the 20-35mhz burst pattern, on rows 2-3, the vertical lines appear more solid or white on component input; with HDMI, the lines aren't quite as solid - you start to see lighter, thinner shades of gray lines. Is HDMI showing more or less resolution here?
lovingdvd 01-20-07, 04:10 PM Thanks for such great information on how to burn this for the X360 HD-DVD!
Is there any chance you could please compile all the test patterns into the zip?
Thanks!
Clarence 01-20-07, 05:05 PM Sure, I'll try to do that tonight.
I also want to double check the IRE values.

Great, thanks!! I think he posted some recent additions to the patterns too.
Also does anyone have any tips for a cheap way to purchase Nero 7? Any online discounts or coupons etc?

The 20 to 35 MHz burst pattern is a little difficult to eyeball. It's really intended for an oscilloscope measurement of component outputs. However, you can look at a full size image of the pattern to get an idea of how it really looks and then try to see how your actual display differs from that.

A better pattern to use would be the sweep pattern I just added recently.

The further toward the right that the displayed image shows detail indicates a higher frequency response.

The patterns are correct. At some point in a calibration chain, you have to know that something is a reference. For clocks, it's an atomic reference. For thermometers, it's boiling water. For MPEG-2 test patterns, it's the decoded YCbCr samples.
Here's a dump of a portion of the irewindow100.ts pattern decoded YCbCr file:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5163/ire100levels4ko.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The format is Cb Y Cr Y Cb Y .....
Hex 0xeb = 235 = 100 IRE.
Hex 0x10 = 16 = 0 IRE
Hex 0x80 for both Cb and Cr = no chroma (black and white)

I think Clarence was commenting as to whether the 360 messed up the levels during playback.

Thanks, Ron. The sweep pattern is a .ts file --- having a hard time converting it to an .iso - any suggestions?
Also, which pattern (maybe this sweep pattern) will help me adjust sharpness --- and is there a pattern other than the color bar to help me set brightness? Thanks.
Just to clarify on a non progressive 1080i tv there will always be flickering? On my RPTV the the top strip flashes on the 1,2,3,4 strip pattern. The tv is not progressive. It does 1080i only.
Ok, good informative thread but once you get the Iso file into a disk and run it through the HD-A1 how do we test this patterns are they somewhat the same as AVI, and DVE but better, in other words how do you read them and make adjustments to your display. :D
Any responses to the above question, some one must know the answer or partial answer. :D
nathan_h 01-23-07, 11:00 PM Vertical Resolution Patterns show you what the resolution capability of your system is
Vertical Resolution Pattern with Motion are similar but with the added element of motion, which can alter results
Horizontal Resolution Patterns - similar to above
Color Bar Patterns -- let you set the COLOR and TINT controls, among other things. here you get a version for the HD color standard and the SD color standard. You'll need colored filters at the very least, to use these.
IRE Window Patterns -- this are useful for setting grayscale, but require instrumentation for measuring the results and (usually) access to the service menu, to be useful. Also useful for gamma settings (again with instrumentation for measurement).
More color test patterns, again useful for calibration but require a measuring device.
IRE Full Field Patterns - again, for calibrating gray scale and gamma
More color tests.
IRE Bar Patterns - I find this useful for setting contrast (make sure the brightest area is distinct from the second brightest area) and brightness (ditto with the darkest two shades)
Ramp and IRE Bar Pattern -- similar idea, don't recall this one
Crosshatch with Circles Pattern - useful for checking convergence and geometry
Y/C Delay Patterns - can see y/c delay (like on the AVIA disc)
Overscan and Pixel Crop Pattern - can see how much overscan there is
A/V Sync Pattern -- makes sure sound and video match
Thanks you Nathan, at least I now know how it works. How is The Bay Area doing? Was station In Alameda Naval Air station in the late 60's and left the area about the time that the BART system was going to open.
What are the routes for the Bart?? Should had not left the area, it is the most beautiful area in the world.
Well are the resolution tests valid for an interlaced display? What should I be seeing with the 1 pixel 1920 x 1080i pattern?

If you have a true 1080i display the expected result would be to just see flicker on the top bar. This is because the fields are alternating between all white and all black.

Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate it!
On my TV the top strip flashes black and white the rest show black and white lines. However, the horizontal full field 1 pixel 1920 x 1080i just shows a grey field with no black lines the 2 pixel pattern shows the lines. So I'm not sure whats going on there.
The 20-35 mhz burst pattern shows the black lines in all the boxes.
My display is an older rptv with 9inch tubes so I'm curious as to whether it can truely do 1080i.
rexdigital 02-21-07, 06:29 PM what program did dr1394 use to build the hdtv test pattern .iso image?
It plays fine on the HD-A1 with 2.x firmware.

Any word on this yet? I just burned the 360 disk and it worked. But, other than the geometry and overscan patterns it doesn't really do me any good.
I have a Spyder2 and HCFR software.... and I need patterns like what GetGray offers.... like (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100% Grayscale Window patterns) and Brightness/ contrast pattern and Rec 709 color window patterns.
Those would pretty much do it for me. All these other patterns are to "Over my head."

Yes agreed it would be great to get a group of the traditional patterns such as ANSI checkerboard, IRE full field and windows from 0 to 100 IRE in steps of 5, and so forth.
Since you are using HCFR you can hook up a PC (if you have a DVI output in your graphics card or pick one up for $50) and use it to generate those patterns.
nate358 02-28-07, 04:21 PM So it looks like no one cares about calibrating their 360 HD Add-on..... Sad, sad, sad.
RAFABAMAD 02-28-07, 07:33 PM So it looks like no one cares about calibrating their 360 HD Add-on..... Sad, sad, sad.
Why don't you make your own disk? Get the patterns you want from w6rz.net and follow the instructions in the sticky thread "The Official AVS Guide to HD DVD Authoring".
nate358 02-28-07, 07:56 PM Looks like that's what I'm going to have to do.... here's the thing....
I've never used any of these programs... I don't even have a DVD burner ( I'll be using a friends) So it's going to be a lot of work for me! And trial and error is going to take even longer.
I just find it very interesting that Clarence found out how to get these patterns to work on the 360 back in late November and no one (even Clarence) seems to want to put all these patterns from w6ras.net together! Maybe I don't know what all this entails and that doesn't make me feel any better about trying to tackle this project when it hasn't been done after 3 months!
I'm just at a loss of words that I'm the only person other than "lovingdvd" that needs these patterns.
I consider myself as being a person that uses new technology, but dang I didn't know I was at the forefront!
I just need to know....
1) is anyone else pursuing this?
2) am I the only one that needs this?
3) am I wasting my time?
4) would others benefit from this?
RAFABAMAD 02-28-07, 08:01 PM Well, my reasons for creating a disc and starting this thread were stated in my opening post. I think most people are waiting for VE or Avia.
nate358 02-28-07, 09:38 PM psht.... that could be years! Well it looks like I have 15 days until my trial versions are up.
nate358 03-05-07, 03:35 PM ok I downloaded VideoReDo+ and I can't figure out how to add the patterns together... I can play each pattern I don't know how to join them.
I'm trying to add these patterns in this order:
ramp
RedWindow709
GreenWindow709
BlueWindow709
YellowWindow709
CyanWindow709
MagentaWindow709
Bars709
IREwindow0
IREwindow10
IREwindow20
IREwindow30
IREwindow40
IREwindow50
IREwindow60
IREwindow70
IREwindow80
IREwindow90
IREwindow100
IREsplitbars
IREbars
Overscancrop
sweeps
I can't see why anyone would need all the other patterns.
I'm guessing that the Ramp pattern is for calibrating Contrast/Brightness, all the color709s for color decoder, and the IRE patterns for Greyscale.
I'm also wondering if it is possible to make a chapter repeat automatically and make it so you have to skip forward to the next pattern.... like it's done on the GetGray disk
Clarence, if you know how to do this or could do it yourself please let me know.
lovingdvd 03-05-07, 04:36 PM Nate - can you also add the crosshatch pattern for testing convergence?
nate358 03-06-07, 12:37 AM Lovingdvd, I didn't see that you wanted the crosshatch... until I already made the HD file below....
The file Clarence posted does have it though.
I found VideoReDo to be a really weird program.... I didn't add the last three patterns on the list even though I DID add them. Sometimes when I skipped around I would see the last three patterns, but when I opened up MovieFactory they weren't there.
Lovingdvd, you might be able to get these two files together on one dvd and then you would have the crosshatch pattern. Would you like to be the first to try my Pattern disc and tell me if it works on the 360 add-on drive?
You can do it by following Clarence's tutorial or by these:
4. Burn your HD DVD folder to a DVD recordable using Nero Burning ROM.
Technique 1 - preferred (works with Nero version 7):
(Contributed by pteittinen.)
a. Launch Nero Burning ROM and select "DVD-ROM (UDF)" on the left side of the screen (you may need to scroll down).
b. Under the "Multisession" tab, select the "No Multisession" radio button.
b. Click on the "UDF" tab.
c. In the "Options" pull-down (or the checkbox under "Advanced," depending on your version of Nero), select "Enable Xbox (TM) compatibility mode."
d. Disregard any warnings and continue.
e. Click "New."
f. Drop the HVDVD_TS folder you just created into the root directory of the compilation (column on the far left).
g. Burn the disc by clicking on the Disc/Lit Match icon at the top.
Let me know if it works!
OK someone is going to have to tell me how to add the zip.... the "Attach Files" function only has a 5mb limit...... How did Clarence do it?
lovingdvd 03-06-07, 12:48 AM I no longer have the X360 HD DVD drive - using the XA2 instead. Otherwise I would have gladly tried it for you.
nate358 03-06-07, 10:19 AM oh, well then you should have no problem burning the iso from w6rz.net using nero 7. It'll have all the patterns.
nate358 03-18-07, 07:05 PM I would like to just say thanks to Clarence for telling us all how to get the HD patterns to work on the 360 add-on. I finally got it burned and now my HD movies look better than my DVDs... it didn't used to be that way. Grayscale was just horrible on my DT-400 via component. I'd post the zip file for others to burn, but this site won't let me due to size... so unless someone tells me how Clarence did it.... you'll just have to do it yourself! :)
RAFABAMAD 03-18-07, 08:15 PM I'd post the zip file for others to burn, but this site won't let me due to size... so unless someone tells me how Clarence did it.... you'll just have to do it yourself!
He didn't post it to this site. Upload it to www.megaupload.com (http://www.megaupload.com) or someplace similar. Look Here (http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-file-hosting.php) or Here (http://personal.inet.fi/atk/kjh2348fs/ul_sites.html) for possible sites.
P.S. Glad you accomplished what you set out to do.
*Vertical Resolution Pattern with Motion*
*Vertical Resolution Patterns with Motion and 3:2 pulldown*
Not sure if anyone is still monitoring this thread - but thanks a lot for the useful test patterns!
I have a setup with a Philips 47PFL7432D/37 TV and Toshiba HD-A3 and the patterns helped me to determine that in order to get 1080p resolution from a 1080i source, I need to turn off 'Noise Reduction' and run the set in 'Unscaled' mode (1:1 pixel mapping).
However with this setup the 1 pixel wide bar on the 'Veritical Resolution Pattern with Motion (moving interlaced bar)' still fails(flashing). Everything else, including the 'Verical Resolution Patterns with Motion and 3:2 pulldown(moving bar)' passes.
What does this mean? That the TV is failing 3:2 pulldown, or that the HD-A3 is?
Thanks,
xnappo
pixelation 12-07-07, 04:08 PM I burnt the DVD and read through the entire thread. But I can't tell what I should be looking for in the output to determine if my TV pass or fail a particular test. Is there a tutorial for the test video?
HDholic 12-07-07, 09:12 PM Anyone w/ a 720P display/projector or video processor feeding 720P display/projector that passed the deinterlacing tests including 3:2 pulldown? I know it won't display the 1pixel lines but what does it look like when it passes? Random 1/2 or 3 pixel lines bunched together without flickering?
Some test results with HD-E1 (European A2, fw 2.7) and Sanyo Z5 using *Vertical Resolution Patterns with Motion and 3:2 pulldown*-patterns
1080i, Z5 trying to deinterlace
- progressive=L1: 1 and 3 pixel strips are flickering
- progressive=L2: no flickering but during movie playback lots of combing
- progressive=film (3-2 detection): not allowed for 1080i
720p, E1 trying to deinterlace (same results for video, film and auto mode)
- "...and 3:2 pulldown": 1 and 3 pixel strips are flickering
- "...RFF flags that drop to video when bar is horizontal 1920x1080" - about 50% of time 1 and 3 strips are not flickering
- "...24p video bitstream 1920x1080" (according to dr1394 is actually "progressive bar encoded at 1080i@29.97 pattern") - no flickering?!?
I am not an expert on this issue, so please could someone explain what is going on 720p with "RFF flags" and "24p video" patterns? Does this indicate that E1 is in same cases successfully deinterlacing or is it just a test pattern issue?
PooperScooper 12-09-07, 08:32 AM Don't forget there's a whole forum here on display calibration. There's also a REC 709 HD test patterns disc for free download. It burns to a DVD and plays in HD-DVD players. They're working on a BD version. It has great patterns for calibrating blacks an whites at the extreme ends of the range in 1 step increments. Plus color patterns, of course.
