The save system sounds really brutal.
xxThe Deanxx 08-09-06, 11:01 PM You just have to use your map and stop at the save points.
MrSquid 08-09-06, 11:24 PM You just have to use your map and stop at the save points.
They went old-school on us! Remember the old fairy caves and ponds in Zelda? :D
summerall 08-10-06, 12:12 AM Picked up the game today, here are my impressions after 2-3 hours of playing:
- Cool cut scenes that really move the story along.
- Lots of gore, blood everywhere, dismemberment, if I had a kid I wouldn't let him play, but hey it's a undead type game.
- The cut scenes length and load times are strange, for example the game will play a cut scene and then let you play to move Frank say 25 feet to open a door, then another cut scene loads and plays....kinda annoying....seems like they could have combined cut scenes into 1 load time.
- Excellent sound effects, example lawn mower and chainsaw.
- Graphically the mall is very sharp and crisp looking. Good variety at each store.
- Nice animations, lots of different reactions dependant upon the weapon you use.
- Save points take awhile to get used to, if you forget to save, you WILL be pissed!
- Sometimes it feels like the game throws TOO MANY objectives at you, no time to finish them all. I guess they wanted us to replay it several times.
- During the cutscenes the character's faces are graphically stunning. A couple times during a few cut scenes I was amazed to see beard stuble and strands of hair, neato.
- Sometimes characters talk to you with text on the screen, this sucks because you can't review what the said or pace the text. One guy told me something and I didn't catch it all, he just sat in the bathroom, I was supposed to do something but I didn't know what to do.
- Aimming with projectile weapons takes awhile to get used to, kinda sucks.
- Spoiler * stop reading * There is a cool boss battle with a clown, he is protecting a amusement ride where he has a hostage, kinda freaked me out the clown's laugh is sick. It was very fun and challenging to kill him, as he had 3-4 different attacks. You could roam the entire area when fighting him.
Overall, I'm pleased so far, I think the boss battles, general humor of the game will keep me coming back for more.

**spoiler**
what did u find was the most effective way to defeat him? i had the most success just beating on him from close, but when shooting him with a pistol, he'd block all my bullets.
My impressions so far are that the game is addictively fun with a bunch o' quirks. Save system sucks, info from transceiver and NPCs sucks, cutscene structure and frequent loads sucks, aiming system sucks, and lack of multi-player/Live sucks. The fact that I'm still having so much fun with the game is proof of how good the actual gameplay is when other things don't get in its way. If Dead Rising 2 (please!!!!) fixes these problems it's more than likely a 10 (on my unofficial but deadly accurate rating scale). :D
Savageone79 08-10-06, 10:33 AM At the begining of the game where the women lets in the zombies to save her dog is there anyway to save the people you are stuck down there with? They all seem to die so fast even before I can get to them. When you go upstairs to the security room though the guy asks where the survivors are like you are supposed to save them..
Like the game a lot so far. Save system sucks, controls could use some tweaking (you can strafe with your camera, but not while aiming a weapon and they use the other stick... stupid), NPC text is distracting (probably a time constraint), tranceiver taking over control is annoying, too much loading.
Still glad I bought it so far. :)
Islanti 08-10-06, 11:43 AM Guys, use the [ spoiler] [ /spoiler] tags please.
Clown:If you wait until he blows up the balloons, you can shoot those and pop them near him. This causes him to take damage and pause, so you can hit him. You can also hit him at certain points in his attacks and cause damage. If you wait until after he does his "chainsaw helicopter" move he won't block for example.
Entrance Plaza at the beginning:You cannot save any of the people according to the official guide.
mboojigga 08-10-06, 11:44 AM Yeah even with those minor problems I doesn't effect the gameplay. I did notice that if I wanted to start back from the beginning with current status you have that capability. If you quit a game and don't save it will ask if you want to quit and save your current status and start the game over so for example if you are at level 6 and go back to the beginning you will still have that status when starting a new game.

This survey asks what you do/don't like about the game and if you want a sequel. You also have a chance to win an HDTV. :)
YoungC55 08-10-06, 01:49 PM i can't read the spoilers :P
I want to buy the game, i'm broke.
HangEmHi 08-10-06, 03:46 PM Guys, use the [ spoiler] [ /spoiler] tags please.
... (spoiler tips deleted) ...
So, is the official guide 'worth it'?
Mcklein 08-10-06, 04:53 PM Thanks for the mini review guys...
Islanti 08-10-06, 07:33 PM So, is the official guide 'worth it'?Ummm. The map is nice, easier to use than the in-game version IMO and bigger than the manual one. The guide is organized as a "fast walkthrough", as in they have you complete everything in the game in one 72-hour run. They admit it'll be impossible to do your first time through that way.
As a result, I haven't been using it as a walkthrough. I have tried to use it as a reference, but it's not the greatest for that purpose as it is organized for their one path through the game and there's no index I saw. :(
That said, if you want to get the most out of the game (i.e. beat it entirely) I expect it'll come in handy.
krimson 08-10-06, 10:49 PM I just finished Case 1 (second attempt) and it's not a bad game so far. I've been playing for 2-3 hours and still haven't completed day 1 so whoever said this game was only 2 hours long was pretty far off.
I have some gripes but don't take this for me not enjoying the game, I think it's a ton of fun. The gun aiming system just plain sucks, what would have been so hard about a FPS style gun control??? I hate that you need to "aim" your gun and stand still while you do it. Then if you get shot you you snap out of the aim view and have to restart.
Save system is a bit of a pain but not as bad as people say. It's not "broken" by any means. You just need to work save points into your strategy. For anyone who played Dragon Quest VIII on PS2, DR isn't nearly as bad as the damn church saves in DQ8!
The game in general is a bit confusing. It's not always obvious what you need to do. It sets up a waypoint on your map for each event that gets triggered but as far as I can tell there is no way to discern which is the main case and which are side cases? (please correct me if i'm wrong!)
summerall 08-10-06, 11:22 PM Fellow zombie slayers...I need some help...
After you kill the clown & save the dude that was forced to ride the rollcoaster. I followed him to the bathroom and I got a talk icon but I wasn't paying attention and missed what he said. Where do I take him now? What does he need me to do? Or is that it, does he just hang out in the bathroom?
Help!
I like the game, but...
The save system forces you to replay the same sequences several times.
The size of the font they use to display messages appear way too small on my HDTV.
dr hypothesis 08-11-06, 03:29 AM I had fun with the demo. Am not having fun at all with this game now. I just got burned bad by the ****ing piece of **** save system. IMO this game just is not fun and extremely tedious. This was the only game I was looking forward to tell the big November releases.
FrankJ.Cone 08-11-06, 07:13 AM Islanti stop playing Dead Rising the damn Tarakians are going to overrun us!
krimson 08-11-06, 09:54 AM I think people are just spoiled by modern day checkpoints and forgot that games actually used to be difficult and involve replaying sections. Remember back when you had to replay the whole game every time? How often does Capcom make easy games anyways? In Devil May Cry you pretty much have to replay the entire level because you died at the end boss.

Wow, remember when graphics were so bad you couldn't tell what things were on the screen? I'm talking Atari 2600 days here.
Good thing they didn't stick with those like they did the outdated save system.

Krimson,
Actually about the aiming shoot without aiming he actually auto aims if you don't go in over the shoulder view. I have done this with most of the weapons including the chain gun off of the jeep and it will auto aim and he will some times turn almost 90 degrees to shoot. It is a lot better then manual aim. Now the problem with auto aiming is he won't shoot up or down at a target for whatever reason. But it works great in a crowd :D

So far from what I have been doing and understood is that you take them all the way back to the Manager office on the roof top through the air duct.
Found out an interesting thing last night.
I was playing it and ended up messing around too much (killing zombies is fun). So I killed my guy and saw the "save and exit" option. I clicked it, but I didn't have any intent in starting where I left off, so I started a new game.
I noticed that in the new game I still had all of my PP (Heh heh juvenile humor) and my levels and skills. It doesn't actually wipe them. So for you guys who are having a hard time, just run through the beginning a couple times, level up a couple of times and it'll make things easier for you.

Should have read this thread yesterday and you would have seen this.
I think I might go rent this one soon. Sounds fairly entertaining, at least for awhile.
Oop. You're right, I missed that post by mboojigga.

But my point was it's NOT as bad as it used to be. There is a save point in every section of the mall, people just need to actually do some planning and work these into their routes. Yes, you will have to replay sections but how is this any different then playing through a level of Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden a couple of times before getting it right? I can see why it's frustrating, but I don't see how it kills the game or is "broken" by any means.
Frankly, I think the game is just way harder then people were expecting. You really need to restart the game a few times to level up your character to stand a chance. Going into a boss fight with twice as many hitpoint and twice as many weapon spots is easily the difference between surviving or not. The style of the game is certainly unique and people need to just accept it for what it is or wait for something else.

The biggest complaint I've heard regarding this is there's only 1 save slot. So, if you are rushing to hit a save because you are about dead, it might be a fatal save that you can never get out of.
Otherwise, it seems like the same save system we've been seeing in GTA, etc. You have to go find it to save, instead of it just propting you during normal actions.

I guess this complaint is legit. I'm not sure the logic behind only allowing one save. I have a mem card so I can save 2. When I commit to the storyline I will probably back up my savegame after each case.

Well, I don't consider this progress.
When I get home, I am going to fight the grocery store manager for the third time.
It's not fun at this point. It's frustrating and irritating.
gamelover360 08-13-06, 12:32 AM Love the game. very unique and definately not run of the mill. All those screaming for a different gaming experience....here it is.
Definately next gen in terms of the visuals, animations, physics, and the ability to interact with the environment. It's not Holy Cow blow you away visuals, but the combination of th eaforementioned attributes creates a next gen experience.
I can see myself playing this game through a lot of times.

And this is a good thing how again? I'm tired of people saying "remember back in the day when....." Yes, I remember it, quite vividly, and that's why I don't want to regress back to archaic gaming practices. Boy, remember back in the day when you had a blood infection, and they used leeches to suck the blood out? You young whippersnappers are all spoiled with yer "modern medicine" and whatnot.
A save anywhere feature is best. If you want to play without saving because for some reason, that rocks your boat, then fine, that will work as well. Play without saving for as long as you want. But some of us don't like backtracking, playing levels over and over again, and losing precious time. Tedious is not a word I want to use for my gaming hobby, I got a job that fits that bill. This save method suits everyone. I'm not a masochist. It's always Japanese developers that like to implement these nonsensical saving styles (Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe etc) Japan have you ever heard of a checkpoint before????
A save anywhere feature is best.I agree 100%. Although completing cases and missions in Dead Rising is probably a lot more satisfying than in any game I've played in a long-o time, I could still do without all the frustration.
Last night, by the way, I managed to kill the three prison psychos in the Hummer jeep out in the park. I drove the jeep around and killed a couple thousand zombies, then went about my merry way on a couple indoor missions. When I came back outside, the evil hip-hop music started playing ... and the three psychopaths were alive again! Arrrrggghhh. I'd used up my shotgun and two mannequins killing them; I don't get why they respawned, and had I known they'd do so, I wouldn't have wasted my shotgun on 'em.
mboojigga 08-13-06, 12:15 PM Where is the Shotgun cause it seems that every thing respawns at its location like the uzi and samurai sword
Savageone79 08-13-06, 12:17 PM This is definately a lot/hate relations for me with this game! When it is fun it is really fun and there are so many great things to do , but the rushed time frame and far apart save points really irratate me especially when I have to do the same thing over 5 times. This could have been a great game if not for the downfalls. I will still probably try to beat it at least once through.

Hop up on counter and look up, he is showing you a secret passage above the sink.
StreetPreacher 08-13-06, 01:36 PM I managed to get as far as finishing the mission against the grocery store owner, but after all of the cut scenes I tried to trigger the next mission and it said they had all expired... I'm not sure exactly how that's possible, since if I made it back in time to finish the first mission I should have had time to start the next one, but whatever...
One funny thing I noticed is that when you start a new game, during the helipcopter intro Frank is still wearing whatever you had him dressed in at the end of the last game.
I'm not sure if this is a bug, but it was quite a laugh to see Frank hovering over Colorado in a Spandex leotard :).
My only other complaint so far is that if you have a custom soundtrack playing you don't get any audio in the cutscenes. I was assuming that they would pause your music before running the movies, but since they don't, you have to manually transfer control back to the game or else you'll miss all of the cut-scene dialogue.
DaGamePimp 08-13-06, 02:10 PM My cousin bought Dead Rising a few days ago and had it crash his 360 after several hours of play , anybody else have any issues with it (it would appear that there are other reports popping up of system crashes while playing DR) ?
I only ask because he asked me if we could try it out on my 360 but I don't think I will risk it if the game is indeed flawed/bugged somehow .

Wow that is the first I heard of anything like that. Is he sure it just wasn't somthing that happen to be while playing Dead Rising
Where is the Shotgun cause it seems that every thing respawns at its location like the uzi and samurai swordI found it near the beginning of the game the second time I played through, just after the crazy old woman goes to get her stupid little dog. I took benches, 2x4 boards, and anything else and cleared the entrance of almost two hundred zombies before finding the shotgun. Someone in the zombie gang must've dropped it at some point.
Also, I just killed those three psychos in the jeep again, and this time, they stayed dead. I have no idea why they respawned before, but <grumble, mutter>.

And you didn't pass by a save point while doing those indoor missions? Since you had to go back outside i'm assuming you did the missions with the 2 guys barracaded in the store or the one with the mother... which means you would have passed by the Gym, twice, and didn't save your game. It's not like the game is 100% to blame because you neglected to save. (edit: Don't take this as a personal attack. I actually did the same thing, and got snagged by the psychopath's respawning. It's a mistake you only make once ;))
I highly recommend everyone do the mission on Day 1 in Wonderland Plaza with the clown. You'll be shown a secret passage afterwards through the bathrooms, which makes travelling much easier, but even more importantly means you'll be passing through the bathrooms constantly and can easily work save points into your missions.
krimson 08-13-06, 05:23 PM Where is the Shotgun cause it seems that every thing respawns at its location like the uzi and samurai sword
There is a gun store that has 3 shotguns, 2 sniper rifles and handguns. It's in the North Plaza mall (the under construction part of the mall). If you go in the front doors you should see a hardware store and camera store. Check your map and you should see a 3rd store in that area which is hidden down a corridor. Easily overlooked if you don't look on the map. Be prepared for a boss fight the first time.
And you didn't pass by a save point while doing those indoor missions? As a matter of fact, I did -- after killing the thugs, I saved in the fitness center across from the hardware store, then followed Brad to where Barnaby was holed up, then came back to collect the crying woman and the two guys in the store. Through the food court, out the door, and then heard the guitar chords of that rap-metal song. I'm like... huh? Then I saw the jeep and was more like "Oh, WTF!!! I killed these guys, why are they back?!?"
I highly recommend everyone do the mission on Day 1 in Wonderland Plaza with the clown.Cool...! Well, it's too late for me to do it on this go'round, but I'll try next time I play through.

Well damn because I keep having to kill them over and over I even saved the girl and I am like at level 13 and was trying to escort 7 people at one time and only ended up getting 1 person back because of them.
vancouver 08-13-06, 11:37 PM I think the saving feature is very good. It really makes you think about what to do and when. If you could save any time the game would loose its intense feel. I didnt think I would like the time continually gong but it really works with this game.
The only thing that really bugs be about the game is that damn Otis on his call phone. Call me RUDE when i hang up on him...if I dont answer he just calls like every 30 seconds...reminds me of girlfriend I had in high school.
HEY OTIS, IF I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ILL ANSWER, IF I DONT ANSWER F#$% OFF AND ILL CALL YOU WHEN IM GOOD AND READY.
i really hope i get to kill otis somehow at the end

hotchip 08-15-06, 10:37 AM i cant wait to get my hands on this game, down under here in aussie we only have the demo to keep us warm at night... really waiting for the official release then i am going to get it. looks like a really good laugh, specially when you can attack zombies with big stuffed teddy bears, and stick masks on them.. ahwell i hope you are all enjoying.
Savageone79 08-15-06, 01:51 PM This game is really frustrating me! I hate being rushed from place to place and being afraid to save becuase I am running out of time and don't want to loose a scoop or worse yet the whole game! Plus the freaking people you escort are so slow and stupid! If killing zombies weren't so much fun I would have to get rid of this game now.

Are you trying to do all the scoops!? If so, don't bother. It looks to be possible on day 1, but later in the game there is scoops all over all the place and fairly small timeframes to do them. The game was simply not designed for people to finish it 100%. If you just focus on your case files while they're active the pace really isn't that bad. You should still have anywhere from 4 to 12 hours between cases to go do the scoops or mess around.
Some of the people you need to escort are just plain retarded but most aren't bad. I find as long as you give them a target-point instead of getting them to follow you they are much less of a pain in the ass. Just point to where you want to go and then follow them.
Just finished this game.
I loved it!
Best can't put it down experience since RE4 and Oblivion.
Helpful hint: Get the Entertainment and Engineering books from paradise Plaza and Criminal Biology from Wonderland and then get Adam's hand chainsaws. Those books make them last 27x longer than usual.
Pure Zombie dismemberment bliss.
Well damn because I keep having to kill them over and over I even saved the girl and I am like at level 13 and was trying to escort 7 people at one time and only ended up getting 1 person back because of them.
I just happened to have a full SMG last night when I ran into them and finally decided to do something about them (I'm near the end of the game, lvl 25 I think)
I shot the gunner out and snagged the heavy machine gun from the back of the jeep when they were busy running into a tree. Short work after that. That gun is pretty cool too! I just wish I could find ammo for it!
they haven't respawned for me.
mboojigga 08-15-06, 08:45 PM I am going to tell you all right now the game is frustrating and that is a good thing. It has been awhile since I had a game that challenges me the way this game does. If I can just get the shotgun and sniper rifle from the gun store I will be set but their are 3 individuals in there that ask me to take a photo of the vent to the security room. I have taken like 10 different variations of pictures for the vent inside and out and still can't get them to respond except when I step foward they start shooting. Any suggestions. Oh I started the game over at level 20 and now I have a dude with a beard in their any ideas on what to do with this dude. Thanks..
P.S. I like this game
When you take the picture of the vent entrance it should read 100% at the bottom of the view finder for it to work with those guys. But since you already took 10, you blew your chance. Next time.

Get the Uzi, then just go in and stand behind the rack thingy on the left side so that your gun is sticking out to the right but you are behind on the sign/rack/whatever. Then just shoot him with all your ammo, bring pistols too if you cam. If he has health left after you run out of ammo then it's just a matter of staying behind the racks and running and melee attacking him while he reloads. You can hit him from across the counter.
I'm not sure about the 3 individuals. I took 1 picture (there is PP sticker on the vent) and it worked the first time. You need to leave the store to get one of the guys to approach you (asks if you're okay or not).
gamelover360 08-15-06, 11:26 PM Save hint:
Bathrooms are all around. Just be sure to save before you go to fight a bad guy or attempt a rescue. As long as you think ahead you will avoid some frustration.
Also the mirror in the bathromm that transporrts you to back and forth between the two plazas is great.
Spiff69 08-15-06, 11:46 PM Also the mirror in the bathromm that transporrts you to back and forth between the two plazas is great.
Wha? . . . Please explain. I missed that.
Ok, I'm really enjoying the game, but I have the same frustrations as most people.
There are really two things I hate in video games:
1) Playing segments over again . . . and again . . . and again.
I don't care how careful you are with saving, you will screw up at some point and have to go waaaay back and do it again.
2) Escort Missions.
Ugh, just not fun. And the AI on most of these guys is awful. I'll try to set the goalmarker or whatever it is, but still . . . PITA. When a character gets stuck in a fountain running in place and then gets mauled by the zombies - these are controller throwing moments. Not that I'd throw my controller, they're $50. The book in the movie theater helps a bit tho in that they're not so scared to follow you.
Otherwise, some great fun in this game and once I stopped stressing about getting all the side missions done, I had a lot more fun with the game.
Some of the best voice acting and character animation I have ever seen in a game. The Jessie girl is ditzy and a completely useless character (um, stupid hot tho), but other than that, very well done. They are really starting to nail things in terms of characterization. Some of it's a little cheesy, but I find myself looking forward to the cut scenes.
And yeah, the inmates in the jeep respawned on me too . . . that sux.
There should definitely be a Dead Rising sequel, IMO. It's fun enough that I'd want to do it again and then they can fix all the crap :)
krimson 08-16-06, 09:48 AM Lol. It's not the mirror that transports you. There is a hatch on the ceiling. You need to beat the clown (the scoop with the roller coaster) to access this.
I've been waiting for this game since the release of the 360 when it was announced, and boy did it live up to my expectations. The save system is perfectly fine, but the fact that I can only save one game on my system stinks on ice.
The gameplay is fun and addictive with all of the different ways to kill the undead, btw, how do you kill something if they're already dead? OK, back to the game. The graphics are well refined. The number of different stores and characters in the mall is a plus. The aiming system does suck, I must admit, it's frustrating as hell. And all of the mission that you can do will definitely keep me coming back to try to complete some of them.
Honestly, this is the best game I've played since Resident Evil 4 for the cube. Highly recommend to everyone, especially to George A. Romero fans. Other than the saving issue and sometimes less than steller survivor AI, I'd say this is a near perfect game.
StreetPreacher 08-16-06, 10:56 AM Lol. It's not the mirror that transports you. There is a hatch on the ceiling. You need to beat the clown (the scoop with the roller coaster) to access this.
Does the mall employee open it for you?
After I beat the clown I ran off to save and forgot to rescue the guy from the coaster. Then, when I hiked back to the ride ALL of the Zombies had re-spawned, and since you have to follow the guy, I just couldn't clear a path fast enough.
After a couple of attempts I just decided to leave him there and hope that he's still on the ride the next time i'm in the area (during daylight preferably ;))
And since we're venting frustrations here, I really wish that your attacks didn't affect the survivors. I hope there isn't an investigation when this incident is over, because I've killed quite a few survivors while trying to cut them free from the center of a swarming mob :).

No sir, officer that man WAS a zombie when the chainsaw cut him in half.
krimson 08-16-06, 11:38 AM Does the mall employee open it for you?
Yes, you need to escort the guy from the rollercoaster. He takes you straight to the bathroom, so it's a short trip to a save point.

This pissed me off a bit too. A misfired shotgun blast will easily kill them from near-full health as well.
summerall 08-16-06, 11:59 AM what's the best way to beat the movie theatre case?

No. There is 0 benefit to being captured by the cult. One of the theatres has a Boss in it. You have to find the right one. Once you beat the boss the cults will dissapear (and you get some nice items too).
summerall 08-16-06, 04:17 PM what does the boss look like?
or is he wearing the same yellow rain coat and green scream mask like all the others?
I thought I'd be searching for a key to open a door at the front of one of the theaters and that would lead me to fight the old guy with the big sword in the first cut scene.
krimson 08-16-06, 04:50 PM The boss is the old guy. The Cult Leader. Since you seem to be having trouble:
Go down the main hallway, then turn at the hallway on your left. This will be guarded by a big group of cult members(a machine gun helps here). The theatre you want is the first theatre on the right.
StreetPreacher 08-18-06, 12:24 PM Couple questions for people who have been playing.
1. Can you take survivors through the bathroom shortcut between wonderland/paradise, or do you have to take them all the way back on foot? I tried this once and the girl didn't follow me, but i'm not sure if that's just because she wasn't close enough to me at the time.
2. If I drop an item in the security room and then save, will the item still be there when I reload? For instance I got a nice book from one of the psychopaths, but don't necessarily want to waste an item slot to carry it all the time. I might start a new game under a new profile to test this because I'm scared to screw up my current game :)
I'm really liking this game so far, and it's one of the few in recent memory where I'm actually interested to see how the story plays out. (coughoblivioncough)
Also, I'm not sure if the jeep guys are supposed to respawn, but they did it to me on this play-through and it actually helped me out. Since I've gotten fairly good at killing them, I was able to run outside and grab their mounted gun for a couple of boss fights. Makes things go much easier!
mboojigga 08-18-06, 01:51 PM Here is a rountable discussion about the game and its addiction and thoughts of improvment which has echo some of what we all have been discussing here.

StreetPreacher 08-18-06, 02:30 PM Insider crap.
I signed up for it once and then tried to quit after my first subscription, but for some reason it auto-renewed anyways. I finally discovered that they hide an 'auto-renewal' item your paypal account as well that you also need to disable. Sneaky pricks.
Sounds like a good article though :)

Yes. Make sure they are right next to you though.

Items will reset themselves the second you leave the screen. When bosses drop items they will always be where you dropped them AFAIK, so you never completely lose an item.

They will keep respawning until the last day.
Savageone79 08-18-06, 03:02 PM Just a couple of things I noticed. I did it by accident but if you ride the space ride you get 10,000 bonus points and its kinda fun to watch too. Also with the baseball bat you can hold down X and get a huge swing that knocks a bunch of zombies down and also throws them far away. Also you get bonus PP for doing this.

i try to give my survivors shottys and use a sickle so i can just harm zombies. If the survivors are brave enough they can mow down hordes of them and i can pick through the rest.
LordStandley 08-18-06, 06:50 PM I couldnt wait for this game to come out when I first saw it posted. Definitely worth the wait and one of the best 360 games out.
I like it alot, but like most people here, I wish the save system was a little more forgiving. My biggest problem is just remembering to save. hehe.
There are some good tips in this discussion though. I will definitely be using some of the tips for future play.
Has anyone used the excavator yet. The spinning zombie is unbelievably funny. :D
dr hypothesis 08-18-06, 07:26 PM I take my comments back about this game. Been awhile since I've played a game with this type of style. It's actually not even that hard. Find out something new you can do in the game every day. Burning zombie faces with a hot frying pan was quite enjoyable. :D The Mega Man blaster makes the game a walk in the park as well.
One question I have is where is the ice auger located? I really would like to try that thing out.

I think you might be talking about the excavator, and you should find it somewhere in the north plaza construction area.

ditto
this game is really good and i thought it was hard when i first put it in but i believe its meant to be played through many times. The more you level up the easier it is to negociate the malls obstacles.
Spiff69 08-19-06, 02:02 PM Anyone notice the brand of the watch?
Savageone79 08-20-06, 02:01 AM Your inventory doesn't automatically switch to food when a weapon wears out.. it just goes to the next thing in your inventory. You can arrange your items so that food is at the end and weapons at the front so this doesnt happen. its a bit of a pain but very doable.
StreetPreacher 08-20-06, 07:37 AM What I meant is that I wish you could keep food separate from the weapons so that there wouldn't be any chance of accidentally cycling to a snack in the heat of battle.
I actually came up with your idea myself last night and might give that a try today. Since you can't actually adjust the item order do you suggest just finding a safe area, dropping everything, and then picking it up again in the desired order?
Savageone79 08-20-06, 03:17 PM At first I was really frustrated by the game and was wondering if the cons outweighed the pros but after a few days of playing it really gets addicting and much easier. I do still wish they gave you better save options and maybe a little more time to complete more quests the first time through but overall its a blast and very addicting. Really the main problem is that you die so easily at first that it makes things frustrating and hard. Once you get up in levels things become much more fun and much less of a hassle. I almost suggest just playing a bit of the game leveling up and then starting over to play it for real.
krimson 08-20-06, 04:24 PM I almost suggest just playing a bit of the game leveling up and then starting over to play it for real.
I don't almost suggest, I STRONGLY suggest people do this. Starting the game @ level 10 or so to do a full run through really helps.
I accidentally did just that. I was level 10 when I hit save and quit when I died once. Came back the next day rather mad that I had to redo 2 hours of game. Though it went much faster.
You could start with the intention of getting the zombie genocide achievement (53K dead zombies) as well as some of the escort achievments (frank the pimp and tour guide). I think the 50 people saved one requires you to go through the story.
I've got 32 achievements in my first pass, I still need the tour guide, frank the pimp, snuff shot B (i'm pissed off that I missed this), 50 saved (saint), karate, and the food/costume ones. I finished at level 38, which includes the 10 levels I got from the first quick play.

summerall 08-22-06, 08:55 PM Anyone know if they are planning any more downloadable content for this game? No, not picture packs, themes or extra clothes but MORE playable cases?
Finished it the other day. Unlocked infinity mode and such. It was a blast, I'm going through it again. It all seems to be going by quicker and I'm actually saving people this time around.
krimson 08-23-06, 02:36 PM I'm a bit annoyed that the infinity/survival mode doesn't have any save points in it... Was going to take a run at the 9 day survival but there is no way in hell i'm going to bother if I have to do it in one sitting. No PP in infinity mode either.
Haha yeah I was reading tips on it. They say you'll sit around in safe zones doing absolutely nothing if you're going for the record.

Savageone79 08-23-06, 07:13 PM Thats funny!!! Its so stupid you can't listen to the walky talky and fight people at the same time or that it starts over if your in a new area or get hit by a zombie!
krimson 08-23-06, 07:27 PM Anybody who wants revenge on Otis... play the first 5 minutes of Infinity mode. ;)
BrianBat420, funny. :) Spiff69. I got some of the cases done really quick (others not so much) and I used overtime mode to it's fullest. So I started trying to get some of the smaller ones done. Some of the other ones were just accidents (photos and stuff). I am really pissed about missing the snuff shot B though. I thought to go to that spot after it happened, but the friggin case timer was running down. That, and I missed ... Carla's (I think that is her name) little picture bonus points because I thought I would have time later. I doubt it would have been much except a few points, but still. :|
Spiff69 08-24-06, 01:39 AM Who's pic do you have to take to get snuff shot b? I never figured that out.
Yeah, beating up on Otis was very gratifying.
"bleep, bleep . . . (Otis) You're in Wonderland Plaza now . . ." "Oh really, Otis? . . . thanks for being a talking map that keeps me from defending myself!"
That cartoon was right on the money!
PDizzle 08-26-06, 01:28 AM How do you beat brock? he beats my ass everytime. Is there a special way to beat him?
Spiff69 08-26-06, 12:27 PM There's no special way that I've discovered. I originally thought there had to be some type of trick to it.
There are a few things that helped me out:
1) When he goes into his block stance, run away - he will get you with the choke hold everytime and that thing knocks two health blocks out.
2) Try the jump kick. Jump in the air and press X on the way down. It doesn't work all the time but it can do some damage.
3) Otherwise, just be patient. There are times when you can get in and do some damage, but he won't let you just completely pummel him so back off when you're no longer doing damage.
krimson 08-26-06, 02:18 PM How do you beat brock? he beats my ass everytime. Is there a special way to beat him?
I beat him almost completely using the jump kick. Stand on the lower level and wait for him to be about to jump down and jump kick him. Rinse and repeat.

I used the double lariat ( click L stick and press X ). Stand on the lower part of the tank and wait for him to jump down. During his jump nail him with the double lariat.

Brad right after he turns into a zombie (after his fight with Carlito in case 7-2)
teckademic 08-28-06, 09:43 AM So, I barely started playing this game and with all the tutorial pop ups I sometimes find myself wondering what the hell I am doing.
First, is using the camera a big role in this game? What kind of pictures am I suppose to be taking?
Second, is the purpose of this game to save as many lives as possible or to make it to the next cutscene to learn a new piece of the puzzle before 72hrs? I ask this because I had gotten a phone call about someone trapped in a jewelry store, but along the way I found two people hiding behind a barricade and I didn't know whether to waste my time or not? I will sometimes see on the screen that someone has died, but who are they and what did I do wrong that got them killed?
Third, is there any other place, other than the place you go to when you die, where you are able to save your game?
Last, is there a way to view the subtitled messages or cell phone messages that I miss when I am trying to fight off zombies and how do I learn new moves? I guess I skipped through the beginning too fast thinking this was a straight forward game, but I may start over if needed.

I found that getting the photography magazine in your inventory really helps with getting good photos at first. I.E. Alerts you to funny, gross, erotic etc photo opps.
I would save as many as possible while focusing on doing the cases. You wont save them all your first time through so dont worry about it. I ended up saving the ones that i felt most sorry for.
You can save at any bathroom in he mall.
You will unlock moves by building your PP score i.e. by taking picutures or killing zombies
Dont worry if you hang up on otis to kill a zombie he will always call back...he is very persistant and anoying.

+1 I did that and he was out in about 3 hits.. It's pretty powerful.
xxThe Deanxx 08-28-06, 07:02 PM The very best way to play this game is to start a 72 hour mode and after you complete the obligatory opening stuff head straight out into the park and had for the parking garage and use the car to get the Zombie Genocider achievement.
After you do this go to the helipad and just wait there until the game ends. It will take you a couple of hours of real time but when the game ends you will get the ultimate weapon & go through the game cases like creamed corn.

los seres 08-29-06, 09:28 PM Capcom(R)'s Dead Rising(TM) for Xbox 360(TM) Video Game and Entertainment System From Microsoft Ships More Than 500,000 Units in Two Weeks
Dead Rising is the Fastest Selling Next Generation Title From a Japanese
Publisher
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Capcom(R), a leading
worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced Dead
Rising(TM), the company's first game for Xbox 360(TM) video game and
entertainment system from Microsoft, has shipped more than 500,000 units
within the first two weeks of its launch. Dead Rising released on August 8
in North America and it is scheduled to release on September 8 in Europe
and on September 28 in Japan. The game carries an "M" rating for mature
audiences by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board).
In preparation for the next generation transition, in 2005 Capcom
concentrated on creating titles for foreign markets while seeking to
improve its marketing, sales and business operations functions in North
America. Dead Rising's early success is attributable to these changes and
Capcom's foresighted philosophy of embracing next generation development to
yield a high quality title with worldwide appeal. As a result, Dead Rising
is also the fastest selling next generation title for a Japanese publisher.
Dead Rising is an action horror game that follows the harrowing tale of
Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist in pursuit of the
story of a lifetime. What he finds is a small suburban town completely
overrun by zombies. He seeks refuge in the local shopping mall, but soon
learns it is far from the safe haven he had thought.
Dead Rising takes place over 72 hours, during which Frank must unravel
the mystery behind the catastrophe and survive the dangerous swarm of
enemies that lie in wait. The unprecedented level of freedom provides
players with a vast array of gameplay possibilities to do anything and
everything they've wanted to do in a mall. Hundreds of unique objects can
be used as weapons to fend off the hordes of zombies -- everything from
golf clubs and baseball bats to cash registers and stuffed animals.
Additional outfits for use in-game are available for free download on Xbox
Live(R) Marketplace, and there are plenty of other options to customize
Xbox 360 experience with Dead Rising themes.
"Response to Dead Rising from the trade, press and consumers has been
tremendous," said Charles Bellfield, vice president, marketing, Capcom
Entertainment. "The success of the game is a result of Capcom's recognition
of Xbox 360 system's possibilities and starting development early on in
order to deliver such a high-quality game."

xxThe Deanxx 08-30-06, 09:28 AM and where's the fun in that?
Trust me, the fun is there.
Personally I played through the game's cases both ways. I first played through with the standard weapons and then I got the Mega Man gun.
I had a lot more fun with that weapon.
But that's the beauty of this game. It's designed really short so that you can play through it 3 or four times accomplishing different things each time.

Brainodo 08-30-06, 02:41 PM ok, so what exactly do you need to complete before you can do this?
Kill somewhere in the region of 53-54,000 zombies. Hence it taking a couple of hours.

Ok After 37 tries I can tell you the ABSOLUTE best way to beat him.
*SPOILER*
It is so simple that I was pissed off when I did it. All I did was stand on the lower part of the tank ( the side with the most exposed) and every time he came to run at me I just started doing the double spin move and he would get hit and laugh. You just have to do this over and over, once in a while he will get you but just get away from him and start all over. I actually did it in about 30 seconds so not to tough. Ohh and I was a level 31 or 32 at the time.
*edit sorry just notice someone else posed this :(

Is this normal? Am I not allow to die?

I think there are two options: 1) Save your current progress and level 2) Save only your level and start over. My guess is you selected option 2 by mistake. I heard that the save menu options can be a little confusing.
I haven't played the game yet myself. I just bought it the other day and plan to dive into it this weekend. Hope I made the right choice getting this over Saint's Row :)

That sounds correct. Keep in mind that to be able to do the tasks well, you are better off playing around for a while and not trying to do everything and just accumulate experience (and levels, which increase your abilities and skills) and then at some point, do a 'save & start over' so that you have a much easier chance at getting things done (which will also reduce your frustrations).
Also, remember that if you have a memory card you can save to there and have at least a backup save point.

Really? You can have 2 saved games if you use a memory card? I might actually have a reason to use my card now!
Stryker412 09-05-06, 09:06 AM I this on Kotaku today, it's pretty awesome. It's a pretty detailed map of the mall.

dr hypothesis 09-05-06, 04:05 PM I can't believe I thought this game was crappy at first. I've got 6 more achievements left and I can't stop playing. I bought Saints Row and played a little bit, but I'm gonna try and finish Dead Rising off.
Surviving for 7 days in Infinite Mode (which you can't save in) will be tough. I think in real time it comes out to about 14 hours. Saving 50 survivors should be tough too. I think I have the game memorized, when every case file and scoop starts... I love this game. Hope they make a sequel.

That's awesome. Thanks for the link! :)
Quikzilver 09-05-06, 09:10 PM Anybody who wants revenge on Otis... play the first 5 minutes of Infinity mode. ;)
Thank god! I wanted to hack this dude up so bad!!!
thatdude90210 09-05-06, 09:55 PM Great map, looks like a lot of work went into that. I didn't know there was a submachine gun in "Chris's fine foods." I just check it out there it was, it's on the entrance arch of the restaurant.
That Other Guy 09-07-06, 03:05 AM Have any of you guys tried the spitting feature in Dead Rising? Frank has to be unarmed, hold the right trigger and spit away! It's stupid, but I get cheap laughs when I spit on survivors, they scowl at you and wipe off the spit. No effect on the zombies (it would be kewl if you could spit fire at them).
Where do you find the Megaman suit? I earned the boots and can get the gun and helmet, but no suit.
I hope it does well in Japan, maybe we'll see a sequel.
you can spit 'fire' at them, kinda. Mix yourself up a drink consisting of snack food (I think) and pie or something like that. you'll make a drink called 'spitfire' which makes your spit like bullets.
Stryker412 09-07-06, 10:02 PM I like this game alot but the save system is really killing it for me. I got pretty far and got caught on my way to a save point and died.
Thrillhouse17 09-07-06, 10:08 PM I thought that the save system sucked at first...but once you learn where the bathrooms are (and there are quite a few, and not too far apart), and once you save certain people (some people will open up shortcuts for you in the mall) it isn't too bad. I personally hate having to go through the warehouse every time in order to get to the security room. It gets old fast.
This game was meant to be played through more than once. If you are unable to finish the story or save some certain people, don't worry about it. You can do that next time. The firts time through just have fun, kill a bunch of zombies, kill as many psychos as you can, go through the story if you want...just have fun. There is no wrong way to play this game (unless you die). I'm really enjoying this game. It does have some faults...but once you realize that this game is totally open giving you total freedom, then you start enjoying it.

I agree that the save system makes more sense as you play through it, and you start to realize what they were going for.
But, I still cant get around wishing that I had a least 2 or 3 save spots to choose from. It's a hard thing to ask for though. Having extra save points would take away from redoing the game and gaining extra PP like the developers wanted.
"Saving and exiting" the first time made me real mad, when I relaized afterwords that I had just restarted the game from the helicopter. Once I got back into it though I wasnt to upset having the extra power and slots.
Stryker412 09-08-06, 07:42 PM Oh yes the save and exit thing got me good too.
I'm still playing this bad boy.
I just spent some time and worked on the genocide achievement.
Anyone else slightly disappointed in the mega blaster?
I guess I expected more, like an explosion when it would hit a zombie like a rocket launcher. Don't get me wrong it's pretty powerful. I took down carlito in 1 hit in the beginning, but it took me like 5 to get Alex. I was able to kill Alex with about 3 hits of a Katana.
Brainodo 09-19-06, 02:25 PM I loved playing this game but that ending... I'm not one for throwing my controller but I'm came mighty close. MAJOR let-down.
I was amazed they had a typo in the final text too. It's only about ten lines.
Still, eagerly anticipating a sequel as the vast majority of Dead Rising was a lot of fun.
AHDTVDiet 01-06-07, 07:59 PM Wow sounds like everyone loves this game. My first impression was intense hatred for it. I guess I will put it in and give it another shot. But it could just turn out to be another splinter cell for me.
AHDTVDiet 01-07-07, 07:58 PM Played it again. It wasnt quite as annoying this time. I can see how people can have fun with it. I played it without even worring about saving anyone, I was just there to kill zombies. That was fun and if I can see people really liking that. It got a little old for me after a while. So I went and had the first fight with Carlito. Scrw the gun for that fight I just took a lead pipe to him. I went with Brad to go see the Dr and I became interested in the story. Something which never happened with PDZ.
Despite the fact that I was now interested in how everyone became zombies I was not getting attached to any of the characters as I had the impending sense that they are all doomed anyway. I figured I probably wont finish this game as it is a loaner and more interesting (to me) games are coming out in the next few weeks.
However I was interested in the story enough to go read what amounts to the "script" to see the different endings. I guess I am happy I didnt finish it because I really dont like how most of those endings played out. I mean they are good for the horror genra and I am sure that the graphics of the scenes added a lot but they are just really not my cup of tea.
For people that really really really want to beat the crp out of zombies in many interesting and creative ways, this is the game for you. And this game does have a story. But to others it may be just one big button masher that loses its luster after a couple of hours.
Good rental and if you like it buy it as the multiple endings give it replay value for those who enjoy it but others I think will grow bored with it.
LR6AGB001 01-08-07, 04:30 AM I hated this game with a passion during the first run through but after dying so many times and saving without having to level up all over again it became bearable. The characters or story didn't interest me at all until the very end. If you played the game correctly you were treated to bit of an unexpected ending.
