View Full Version : HD Review Sites
I thought it might be useful to compile a list of all the sites doing regular HD DVD and/or Blu-ray reviews. These should be sites that consistently review new releases as they come out, not sites that might have one or two selected reviews (*cough* Digital Bits *cough*).
Please add to this:
Audio Video Revolution (http://www.avrev.com)
Digital Audio Video (http://www.digitalaudiovideo.com)

sdlehman 08-09-06, 05:35 PM Hey Josh, good idea. Widescreen Review when the get caught up is probably a good one.

I agree. I was just about to suggest the same thing.
DVDTimes.co.uk - we review the discs when we can get em and the reviews properly assess the video quality. You won't see "it was grainy so that means it's bad" on these reviews.

PRO-630HD 08-10-06, 05:05 AM Sorry but after upcoming discs bullshit fiction review of Terminator 2 I don't give this site much credibility. The three above are by far the best.
First post updated. Keep 'em coming.
Is hddvd.org the same thing as DVDTown?
Kris Deering 08-10-06, 12:24 PM www.hometheaterhifi.com
We are doing HD DVD reviews and will be adding BD reviews shortly.
Currently we are using a Marantz VP12S4 for video playback with the Anthem D2 doing audio and video processing (true inverse telecine and true DD+). We plan on using the VP11S1 very shortly for our reference (already used this for reviews of a few that haven't been published yet).

Mods, any chance this thread could be made a sticky? I think it would be helpful for a lot of readers.

DeanWink 08-11-06, 12:34 PM Yup...
HDDVD.org is DVD Town.
We are in the midst of a site redesign and there may be greater seperation between the two entities.

As I mentioned in my original post, Digital Bits is a news and rumor site. They do about 5 disc reviews a year. That's not what I'm looking for with this list.
DrCrawn 08-11-06, 02:43 PM This thread should be stuck IMO. ;)
Dave Vaughn 08-11-06, 07:25 PM Josh...umm...how about hometheaterspot?

Michael Osadciw 08-11-06, 07:57 PM www.hometheaterforum.com has consistant HD-DVD reviews from three reviewers. BD reviews are a bit slower at the moment (because its just me doing them) but expect them to pick up soon.

Thanks for including TheManRoom in the list, especially considering our name can be a hurdle and turns off many folks. I appreciate it!

If you think the name can be a hurdle and turns off many folks, have you considered changing it?
Considered? Yes. But there are infinite logistical issues with doing so that reach far beyond disc reviews. A more likely scenario would be a spin-off site, which has its own issues to overcome.

Which is the reason that we all need "A Man Room" to begin with! ;)
DVDFile is several months behind but finally posted a couple of HD DVD reviews. I expect more will come, so I'll be generous and add them. I wish they'd fix the search engine on their site (which is completely useless after an article drops off the front page).
Mark Zimmer 08-17-06, 03:35 PM We've had many regrets about our name (digitallyObsessed.com) too, since it's both hard to say and to spell, but we're kind of stuck with it at this point.
Great thread Josh! You rock! I'm sure this will be a very popular bookmark of mine.

I'm going to hold off adding them to this list until they start posting the written reviews, I think.
tlreddragon 09-03-06, 02:10 AM even though dvdfile is often late with their reviews, i find the ones they have to be very accurate. they're also fairly objective in their criticism, for example, limiting maximum scores to 9 out of 10 before direct comparisons become available.
dvdtown is good because theyve covered almost every title but the scores are pretty inconsistent. A video score 9 for italian job? I couldnt believe it i thought it was rotated 6.
Kris Deering 09-24-06, 01:34 AM How often do you update your site Kris?
The site is updated quite frequently but up until recently software reviews were going to be slow getting out. I am helping with the formating now so they should come more often. We just published 10 more the other day. I have 10 more ready to go up so we will put them up toward the month's end. Once I am caught up, we will just do a few at a time as I do them, so you will see them sooner.
dtsfanoh 10-14-06, 04:14 PM Check this "review consolidation" website. Pick your region, search " hd dvd" and all HD DVDs come up with all reviews from reviews sites consolidated!!. Saves a ton of time checking multiple sites!!
A very nice, "one stop shopping" site. I use it daily.

Kris Deering 10-24-06, 09:56 PM Just wanted to give you guys an update. We are now posting a new group of reviews every week. 10 reviews each time (as long as my schedule allows). For past reviews just click on movies toward the end of the page. Our reference system for reviews is:
Marantz VP11S1 1080P DLP PJ (fully calibrated to D65 by Dave Abrahms)
Anthem Statement D2 A/V Processor (1080P60 or 1080P48 out) HDMI 1.1 for high rez PCM
Anthem Statement A2 and A5 amplifiers
Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player via HDMI
Panasonic Blu Ray player HDMI
(5) Onix Reference 3 Loudspeakers (mains and rears)
Paradigm Reference ADP Loudspeakers (surrounds)
Dual SVS CS-25-31 subwoofers with Sampson Amp
SVS PB-12-2+ Subwoofer
Behringher Feedback Destroyer Parametric EQ (room flat from crossover point to 15Hz within 1 db)
Stewart Studiotek 130 screenwall (1.9 screen widths back)
Exact Power EP-15A and SP-15x4 Power conditioners
Room fully treated acoustically and totally light controlled
All video and audio is processed correctly and retains the full quality intended by the respective format.
Rob Tomlin 10-24-06, 10:23 PM Good stuff Kris. So, when you do a review of these titles, will the HD-DVD and Blu-ray players always be processed through the Anthem, or are you using a "pass through" mode?
Kris Deering 10-25-06, 09:53 AM For now I am using the Anthem to do the de-interlacing to 1080P. The de-interlacer in the Anthem is better than the one in the Panasonic and Samsung BD players. The Toshiba obviously doesn't do de-interlacing. Once they have players that do an unprocessed 1080P output I will bypass the Anthem's processing.

Makes sense. Thanks for the response Kris, and looking forward to more of your HD-DVD and BD reviews.
wallmwallm 11-02-06, 07:15 PM As the list gets longer & longer, finding a good quality HD movie amid not so good, is getting difficult. I got geek company coming this weekend and I would like to show off a great movie on my projector. I know a lot of people would say MI3 right now, but does anyone know if this is a search by "star" or equivalent rating on any of these sites? I am suprised I don't see a "HD reference disk" thread here at avs.
Adam Tyner 11-02-06, 07:17 PM wallmwallm: Look at this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705387).
wallmwallm 11-03-06, 05:46 AM Thanks! That's what I am lookin for. I think I saw that when I did a search for "reference" It didn't click to me what it was about.

Since this is my thread, I'm putting in a plug for DVDTalk's new HD column: "High-Def Revolution".
http://www.dvdtalk.com/hd/index.html
In this first article we give a summary of the format war to date and make a case for why waiting it out for a winner is a bad idea.

Josh,
Thumbs-up on the article. I don't think studios will let HD discs die, though. With DVD sales approaching/hitting/walking on a plateau, they need a revenue stream for their library content and this seems it. I think it's IPTV/VOD, but what do I know about marketing? :o
I can't believe you gave 4.5 stars to the video of a 1-star movie. Now that's saying something!
Cjplay.
DrCrawn 11-29-06, 01:56 PM *deleted* wrong thread
Bruce Patterson 11-29-06, 06:49 PM Great topic.
Josh, not meaning to bring up a side point, but any recommendations for other News sites, other than the Digital Bits? They're posts are irregular, and I'm not generally interested in their other stuff, other than Maxwell's columns. Thanks for any recommendations.
EyeCrave 12-09-06, 07:48 PM This is a great idea.
EyeCraveDVD.com (http://www.eyecravedvd.com) is now covering both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. We've got about 10 reviews posted right now with 6 that are awaiting final touches.
The site is also undergoing a massive redesign to better separate the DVD mediums.

Josh. Great article. You hit the nail on the head. All studios should be supporting both formats. I read or heard something saying that Fox and Disney were now considering adding HD-DVD support. I've been unable to get confirmation from my sources as of yet, but if this is true, I hope that other studios follow suit.
First post edited to add EyeCrave's site.
deleted. site re-launching, ill post link when its ready.
Australian Site just started, but now has reviews for HD DVD. Heaps more coming in the next week or so.. All reviews are in layman's terms.

I've already stated in the original post that Digital Bits doesn't qualify because they don't regularly review anything. They're a news site that do a couple of reviews a year if they feel like it.
The new High-Def Revolution (http://www.dvdtalk.com/hd/2006_high_definition_in_review_.html) column is online at DVDTalk. This one has our year-end Top 10 list.
underdog57 01-03-07, 11:09 AM Josh ,
Been subscribed to dvdtalk for about a year , I like it and look at this site the most .
I like how you compare the hd-dvd against blu-ray in a fair way ...
A few movies(Animal House) I did not agree with Adam , as it seems he has different tastes.
I would recomend getting animal house myself ,
