Not too be offensive, but are you qualified or have extensive knowledge of HDTV's? I just want to make sure the info is not biased and is trustworthy.

Yes, I have very extensive knowledge about LCD but it’s somewhat limited on PDP.

However, just because I like LCD, that doesn’t mean I’m biased. If you read the doc, you'll see several concerning issues with them.

Thats cool. I actually have a 32" Samsung LCD HDTV (LN-S3251D) and play my Xbox 360 on it daily. I'll check out this report.

Awesome, the Samsung R7 and BRAVIA 2006 uses S-PVA. I and several other professional reviewers agree that VA panes are the best for viewing motion video. Especially, the ones converted from film to digital.

The bad news is that the R7 was supposed to use the next-gen CCFL backlighting but it’s been delayed, however, it is used by the 2006 BRAVIA V series.

Wow, what a comprehensive guide! Thanks! There's one thing that I was wondering about, though, which isn't quite covered in this document; and that's when to buy a new HDTV. Traditionally speaking, what are the times during the year when you can get the best prices (and when you'll get the highest prices)? I'd like to get a new TV between now and the end of the year, but I'm afraid that I'll wait too long and prices will go up on the TV I want.

The PS3 does not have 1080p games?? The 360 is better?? Not biased at all LOL Not sure what that even has to do with what you where trying to say.

Really its not bad, if pretty basic

lol, I didnt say the PS3 doesnt have any 1080p games but from what we know, its graphic capability is sightly below the X360's. It also has 128bit memory bandwith but the X360 compensate for the loss by having an eD-RAM.

The best time to buy an HDTV is after 6-8 months since initial release. The reason becasue, it will contain improved hardware (reversions) and it'll be cheaper.

However, if you want it real cheap, you have to wait until spring/summer.

Most games on the X360 are, and will be rendered in 720p; primarily because 720p is considered to be the sweet-spot between visuals and performance. The same would apply for PS3 as well (since its GFX is inferior to the X360’s).

Spoken like a true fanboy. Not saying it is a bad thing, if the 360 is your thing then great I had 1 (well 3) but I could not beat the ring of death and the turbine was a little noisy for me. LOL

Like I said its really not bad and a good read for the beginner.

PS3 has no games that can render 1080p60?

You are wrong, while the number of games that do are limited they are there. The game I have been playing the most recently (Gran Turismo 5: Prologue) happens to render gameplay in 1080p60, while replays are 1080p30 with some more graphical effects.

Nielo TM

I said most games

GT5: Prologue is a simple game. So it can be rendered at 1080p60 without any problems. This applies to most racing games (accept for games such as Burnout).

Do you remember how Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2 looked on the original Xbox? Amazing!

I am a recovering LCD addict myself. Thank goodness for the intervention that was given for me on this forum.
Now I am plasma all the way.

Sure wish you had put the buyers guide you made in HTML format somewhere. I use my PS3 and it won't open PDF's

How is that possible?? The PS3 is the ultimate gaming/BLu-ray/web browsing system.

I am not a big Sony fan (especially thier LCD TV's, but liked the SXRD's) but I think the Playstation3 is one of the best pieces of A/V equipment to hit the HD market in some time!

PS3 is good media system, but I already have my PC ^-^

Xbox however is a pure gaming system with tons quality games, sure it has problems but what doesn’t LOL.

PS: I was planing to get the PS3 (once the price dropped), but they completely removed BC. But I might get it in few years just to play FF games

backward compatibility

chadmak09

backward compatible

I was lucky enough to get one of the first PS3's made that is totally Backwards compatible.
It has the emotion engine (and the 4 USB ports in the front)
Newer PS3's don't have this. But,
The new PS3's should still play about 50% or more of the older games via software emulation instead of emotion engine.
You simply just have to give them a try. But if this is still a deal breaker for you then you can still find a totally backwards compatible PS3 (one of the original 60 or 20GB) on ebay for the same price.
But IMO if you bought a PS3 you should be playing PS3 games and watching blu-rays. There are alot more games for the PS3 than before.

Nielo TM

on the new console, you can't play any old games. Because the hardware isnt there, which you need to emulaute PS2 games.

The X2 is different, as everything is done in the software arena

oh well, I'll get one the price drops. But now, I have to finish my first year in uni

I can tell a lot of work went into the buyers guide.

There is a ton of good information (and some bad); perhaps too bias towards LCD. It would have helped potential buyers of HD sets, to go into much greater detail on the strengths and weaknesses of each of the major current display technologies (i.e. LCD, Plasma, DLP) in a comparison format. Those elements (comparisons) could be very helpful for buyers. What is extremely important to one buyer could be of no value to another buyer, and of course the opposite can also be true.
