View Full Version : Best lastest HDMI A/V Receiver people like for the HD-A1?
I am shopping, looking around, Pan XR57 and Pioneer 1016 (just released) are two I have researched. But I wondered what people out there already have and use and like or think might be a good potential a/v receiver to match with my HD-A1.
RobertR1 08-11-06, 07:22 PM I'm still searching for mine also so I'll play close attention to this thread.
I really looked into the high end Oulaw receiver which has been raved about immensly but it does not have HDMI which I'd really like.

I'm using a JVC 402B. JVC also has a 401S and 702B models and several newer models: 411S/412B.
These are all Digital 2 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out upconvert receivers.

the Panny is not the best choice if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 setup. The panny will not let you apply PLIIx to the 5.1PCM coming from the A1, thus eliminating your rear surround(s).

mmm, so the new Pioneer 1016 is looking better.
ChrisW6ATV 08-11-06, 08:42 PM I also have a JVC RX-D402B and I have been very happy with it.
valkyrie 08-11-06, 08:43 PM I considered the same thing, and couldn't find any that I like. For me, the closest was the Pioneer Elite 84, but it's too expensive for my tastes at the moment (i.e. knowing I'll be buying an HDMI 1.3 receiver once they are available).
I settled on dual HDMI blades for my plasma and I'm sticking with my H/K 635. Figure I can sell one of the blades once the new recievers are available.

Robert D 08-11-06, 10:27 PM I love my Panasonic XR70 it rocks the whole house lol. :) I bought it for $230 to hold me over until any new receivers come out that support the newer audio formats.
RobertR1 08-11-06, 11:04 PM Robert D,
Thanks! I'm gonna look into that one and see if it'll hold me over till 1.3receivers next year. If it's not allowed on the forum, might PM'ing me a link where you got it for that price?
No issues with Hdmi video/audio with the A1?
Thanks,
Robert.

Absolutely no problems with video or audio, in fact I have never had any hdmi warning or failure nada zip with any firmware version. Also it's makes no difference in what order I turn the receiver/HDTV/HD-A1 on.
I bought it from these guys http://www.brandnamez.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=16613&step=4 however I got a special deal as I had really ordered the XR55 but they were out of stock so they gave me the XR70 cheap.
You can get one here for $260 http://www.refurbdepot.com/productdetails2.cfm?Product_ID=4154&refererid=dealtime
Or from a more trusted dealer here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=PASAXR70S&is=REG&Q=&O=productlist&sku=319963
RobertR1 08-12-06, 12:21 AM Thanks Robert! Much appreciated :)
Since the tie in to the subject matter here driving this is the HD-A1 I see no harm in posting these specs and a link here to Pioneers website. Between the types of HDMI, upscaling through other inputs, sound formats, and HDMI version there is alot that needs to be kept in mind in a receiver for finding a suitable mate for the Toshiba HD-A1.
For the upper 300's this thing is loaded. Now I am sure there will be more new models in September.. Sony, JVC, Yamaha, and others all have new ones coming out soon I read... but with XM Ready and 2 HDMI inputs, rumored to be HDMI 1.2, but I can't find anything to confirm, this brand new consumer model looks loaded to the hilt for that price point, esp at 110wattsx7.
****edit ***: Hmmm, it looks like this thing does not accept audio over the HDMI. To me and many others I think it wil not be very useful then. What you really have is video switching between the the two HDMI inputs then with no audio. I wonder how many folks will buy this, hook it up and return it when no sounds comes out of the cd/dvd players via HDMI. IF I am wrong about this, so much the better.

Yes, I believe the 2600 is one of these..
Any news on any upcoming receiver with HDMI 1.3 ?
Denon is rumoured to have a couple new ones out in Sept/Oct - including potentially a 5700.
Jason Priestley 08-13-06, 03:07 AM I have the denon 4306 which I think is a great receiver with plenty of power. Has been reviewed well accross the board. I believe it has 3 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi out. It can upconvert all non-hd feeds or pass through the hdmi (I love only having 1 a/v cable for the tv). It is only hdmi 1.1 spec though. MSRP is $2000 although there is always wheeling and dealing.
I think denon has another hdmi receiver that is cheaper msrp of 1200 which is the 2807. I hear it is fine for smaller family rooms.
Plus there's the 3806, which I have - very nice.
But I'll be moving across the Atlantic for the promotion, so I'll be looking for another AVR soon... Intend to look around in September for what's on offer...
damn :) did that clock move yet :p
LordofDoubleD 08-13-06, 10:14 AM I also have a JVC RX-D402B and I have been very happy with it.
Another vote for the JVC.

There's the 1600 , 2600 and 4600. 1600 and 2600 are similar but the 2600 have a 1080i upconverter for DVD and other sources
jdawg131 08-13-06, 10:41 AM Denon 3806.
herdfan 08-13-06, 12:20 PM Plus there's the 3806, which I have - very nice.
Same here. Very happy with it. Although, now that the 2807 is out with very similar specs, I would probably go with it as I would not notice the slight power difference.
Q of BanditZ 08-13-06, 12:24 PM Ok, set me straight folks: For all of you that buy these kinds of receivers now?...what does it get you and what happens when HDMI 1.3 comes around?
FilmMixer 08-13-06, 12:46 PM ...what does it get you and what happens when HDMI 1.3 comes around?
With current display technology and video production techniques, the advanced color space of 1.3 adds nothing... might have an advantage for HTPC and PS3/etc, but I don't think it will have an impact on HD/BR.. The entire infrastucture of how discs are made will have to change, and I don't see that happening anytime soon.. Some people say that there may be color space upconverting players, just like there are upscaling resolution players now... we'll see.
As far as audio, and HD DVD are concerned... HDMI 1.3 will only pass high rez bitstreams if the discs are encoded in basic format, and to date, I don't think that any are or will be in the future... you are going to have to pass deocded PCM to the receiver, and 1.1 and 1.2 do that just fine... we've discussed this ad naseum in other threads, but there I see no advantage in doing the decoding inside the receiver.
P. Anthony 08-13-06, 12:47 PM As Jason has mentioned previously, I too own the Denon AVR-4306, it has 3 HDMI inputs, and 1 HDMI output, perfect for connecting both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray player, without having to use the analog connections. It automatically goes to Multi-channel for Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital for ST-DVDs without having to switch anything. The sound from the Denon is superb with excellent bass response. :)

Exactly. As long as the players continue to do the decoding it makes no difference. Not to turn this into a pro HD DVD thread, but I think that it is an overlooked advantage of HD DVD. Are you listening Sony, Panasonic, and Pioneer?
Dr_Mark 08-13-06, 01:42 PM Look at the Denon 4806, has a ton of features and lots of power. The great part is it's upgradeable in hardware and firmware. Got mine and love the heck out of it in 7.5 power. 5 subs including a SVS.

Huh?
I thought that some, if not all, of the BD players had the same audio codecs like the HD-DVD player currently does.
Meaning: If I don't have HDMI for audio, I can use multichannel analogs and be good to go, just as I am not with HD-DVD's player.
Or am I misunderstanding you?
the Panny is not the best choice if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 setup. The panny will not let you apply PLIIx to the 5.1PCM coming from the A1, thus eliminating your rear surround(s).
Yes it will. I have the XR-57 connected via HDMI to the HD-D1 and I layer PLIIx
over 5.1PCM for both HD-DVD and DVD's.
Huh?

Hi Q - I don't think everyone believed me in the "old days" :)
The BD initial players cannot decode DD+, TruHD or DTS-HD - they can only take the DD or DTS legacy cores and decode them. This was because BD did not mandate a minimum spec for the players which inlcuded those codecs, such as HD DVD did.
The BD players cannot send these advanced audio streams to an external AVR either, since that requires that the players be equipped with HDMI 1.3 (and the AVRs also).
So HD DVD allows you to get DD+ 5.1 and (it appears) TruHD 5.1 audio into almost any AVR via HDMI or Analog, but the BD players cannot.
I hope that this was what you were asking! :)
FilmMixer 08-13-06, 02:30 PM Huh?

They do, but they are not madatory... but if the player supports it yes, you can use the analog to get the decoded audio out.
To go off topic for a sec, and again, not to start a flame war, but one of the things that I find so cool about HD DVD is that to put an HD DVD logo on a player or software decoded, the hardware must be able to many things at a minimum... it's madatory.
Persitient storage, internet connectiviity, advarnced audio codecs, IHD, dual HD streams.. it's pretty cool. I listened to the HD BEAT interview with Mr. Parsons from Pioneer, and while BD can do dual HD streams, none of the 1g players will be able to to it... sometime in 2007 before it's ready..
I've seen Batman Begins in HD DVD and the in movie experience with video overlays is something that is not to be missed.. and I exepct, when MI 3 comes out, and the HD DVD has it and the BD doesn't, I think that will turn a lot of heads..
Back on topic.. nothing to see here :)
Q of BanditZ 08-13-06, 04:05 PM They do, but they are not mandatory... but if the player supports it yes, you can use the analog to get the decoded audio out.

Let's go back off topic for a second :) From what you saw off BB, would it be the new reference disk? How does it compare to CoR and Serenity?
From what I saw... the first 15 minutes... yes.
Q - I just think it's really cooll that any HD DVD player must be able to do all of the things that the spec calls for.. If you read the HD DVD spec, there's some amazing things that it isn't even doing yet... i.e. seamless branching or more interactive IHD.. how about new trailers being downloaded so ever time you put the disc in you get the latest trailers and don't need to sit through the one you've seen a 100 times before, steaming audio commentary (care of mandatory DD+ and DTS HD, which require a mixer built in to the player) from the internet... all mandatory for an HD DVD player.
Here's the link to the pdf on the DVD forum site that tells you what is mandatory and required of the HD DVD format : HD DVD specs and mandatory requitements for players (http://www.dvdforum.com/images/Requirements%20Specification%20for%20HD%20DVD%20Video%20Appl ication-July2005.pdf)
BDJ isn't even ready yet, and supposedly these first players aren't ready for it anyways... and as I've said, come 10.30.06 when I am watching Tom Cruise and JJ Abrams commentary video on top of MI3, I will really have something to make the BD boys green with envy.. or is that Blue :( with evny :)

RobertR1 08-14-06, 12:25 AM Would someone please explain this difference between the Yamaha's??
RX-V1600 HDMI Up Conversion • (Deinterlace 480p)
RX-V2600 HDMI Up Conversion (Scale to 480p/ 720p/ 1080i)
The other main difference I see is the video to Zone 2 which is not important for me at all. I'm really leaning on the 1600.
Thanks,
Robert.
duganhowser 08-23-06, 02:37 AM Robert,
Both models have HDMI upconversion. The 2600 can pump a little more wattage to the speakers, but that's about it as far as differences. I own the 1600 and love it. Just hooked up the HD-A1 today and have had no problems.
RobertR1 08-23-06, 03:51 AM Thanks for replying to me as your first post! Must appreciated and welcome. :)
I ended up getting a Panny XR57. While it does not have the desirable features of the 1600, it seems to be doing good so far. I'm hoping to swap it out next spring for a 1.3 receiver.
Thanks again,
Robert.
jdawg131 08-23-06, 07:13 AM The XR57 is a nice receiver, especially at the sub $350 price point. I just received mine this past Friday and have it hooked up stairs with my A1. I didn't want to spend too much money on the bedroom receiver since I am awaiting Denon's 1.3 plans. Since I just picked up my 3806 in the last 6 or 7 months, I'll probably be holding out until sometime in 2008.
scottd327 08-23-06, 09:10 AM Another vote for the Denon AVR-4806. It is expensive but the THX Ultra2 power is a big plus and it is absolutely glitch free. 3 HDMI inputs and you can layer anything over the 5.1 PCM coming from the Toshiba: Audyssey EQ, bass management, THX, PLIIx, EX/ES, Music modes, etc... So it can switch 1080p video and apply any and all sound processing to the decoded DD+. What practical advantage is HDMI 1.3 going to bring over what we have right now?

Did you receive your unit and if so, can you get audio over HDMI?
Thanks
Mark Zimmer 10-04-06, 03:55 PM Is my understanding correct that you cannot do HDMI for audio and component for video---it's all or nothing with HDMI on the HD-A1, right? Assuming that's true, I have no reason to upgrade my receiver until I get an HDMI-capable television.

I have to agree. I am floored by this receiver - it does everything, well. I just love that I can get direct PCM and DSD from different sources via iLink, and also apply any processing to any source. HDMI from the Toshy HD-A1 is just perfect.

cluelesspa 03-29-07, 12:41 AM I am waiting for the new Denons with HDMI 1.3
I read on the net somewhere that it was more like Late April or May for release.
mmm, so the new Pioneer 1016 is looking better.
The Pioneer 1016 does not handle audio through the HDMI inputs on this model. It is video passthrough only.
I have a Denon AVR-887 which I got cheap as an open box at CC and it works great with the HD-A1 & the PS3.
I highly recommend this as a great budget receiver with a full featured (handles audio over HDMI) HDMI receiver.

except for it's reputed inability to pull PCM audio from the HDMI stream.
RedBull808 03-29-07, 11:41 AM I love my Onkyo SR604 7.1 it has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. It has been flawlees w/my HDA-1. I only have it @ 5.1 right now but will be going 7.1 real soon. This thing is heavy and looks better then a panny IMO. Better yet I got it on sale @ CC for $379 woth every penny. :D
