View Full Version : Programming a remote for a Vizio TV???
I want to program my Comcast cable remote so that I can operate my Vizio TV. Does anyone know the remote codes for Vizio. Mine is the 32 incher. I'm also looking to unlock the volume control on the remote and reassign it to my tuner. Any suggestions.
Thanks.
Try the codes under LG or perhaps Zenith. If the remote is made UEI, then the code would be 0178.
Audiophiliac 08-12-06, 01:53 PM Shoot...I just programmed a remote for a Vizio.......I did have to use some different brands codes.....and now I cant remember what it was!....If I remember before you find it, I will post it.

What are the codes for programming the remote for my Cable Box to control my Vizio?
1758; 0178; 10178; 627; 502
crazycoltrane 09-13-06, 06:25 PM I have a VIZIO 32" LCD and a Comcast Motorola HD/DVR Box the code that worked for me was 0178. It controls the Power and volume Controls, all other functions I still need the TV Remote.
Thanks.
Dear crazycoltrane,
Thanks SO much for posting the code for a vizio tv using a comcast universal remote. It seems to work great !!
David
Two others mentioned code 0178 before crazycoltrane did. :)
dmk1974 02-18-07, 09:42 PM But what about the "input" button on the Comcast Universal Remote? I can't get it to switch inputs on the Vizio TV. It does the power and volume just fine.
Kupakai 02-18-07, 11:11 PM But what about the "input" button on the Comcast Universal Remote? I can't get it to switch inputs on the Vizio TV. It does the power and volume just fine.
If you are using TV/0178, do the following:
1. Press and release TV device key
2. Press and hold SETUP until remote blinks twice
3. Type 994
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 00090
6. Press TV/VCR key
The remote should blink twice if successful
You can also assign the following to other keys (the number is for step 5, and choose whatever key you want for step 6):
Wide = 00138
TV = 00110
AV = 00105
Component = 00231
HDMI = 00174
But what about the "input" button on the Comcast Universal Remote? I can't get it to switch inputs on the Vizio TV. It does the power and volume just fine.
If this is a UEI made remote. with the tv on and the remote set to tv device, what happens when you tap SETUP and release, then enter either 059 or 0059?
dmk1974 02-18-07, 11:24 PM If you are using TV/0178, do the following:
1. Press and release TV device key

4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 00090
6. Press TV/VCR key
The remote should blink twice if successful
Thanks! That worked! The last thing that would make it perfect is if I could then assign it when in AUX or CABLE. I tried the keymover and it didn't work. I'm guessing because of the special 00090 code only applying to the TV function?

After programming the new function on the TV, you should now be able to do the keymove to assign it to AUX or CABLE:
1. Press and hold SETUP until two blinks
2. Type 994
3. Press TV device key
4. Press INPUT key
5. Press AUX or CABLE device key
6. Press INPUT key
I just tried on my remote and it worked.

Hmmm...that's exactly the method I tried twice on each AUX and CABLE. I wonder why it didn't take. Worked fine for moving the TV Power button to each of the other two.
It didn't work because you can't map an advanced code, then keymove it. It has to be done in one operation like so:
1. tv
2. press and hold SETUP for two blinks
3. enter 9-9-4
4. tap SETUP for one blink
5. enter 00090
6. press CABLE or AUX
7. pick a key

johnny76 02-19-07, 09:28 PM Thanks Kupakai for all the info. I was wondering though, is there a way to reset the remote back to its default settings?
Kupakai 02-19-07, 10:52 PM Thanks Kupakai for all the info. I was wondering though, is there a way to reset the remote back to its default settings?
There are a couple of different resets. I'll go from the least destructive to the most complete reset.
You can clear the keymoves for individual devices:
1. Press the button for the device you want to clear (ie TV, CBL, AUX)
2. Press and hold SETUP until two blinks.
3. Type 994 (remote will blink twice)
4. Press the device button twice
The remote will blink twice
If you want to clear all the programming, ie keymoves, macros, learned keys:
1. Press and hold SETUP until two blinks.
2. Type 980
The remote will blink four times
CAUTION: it will also clear any macros the cable company might have put in the remote. I know my Comcast remote has a macro for the "On Demand" button, and it has an upgrade for a cable box. If you do clear the "On Demand" macro, it's simply the following keys: "CABLE", "1", "OK/SELECT", so you can reprogram it yourself.
If you want to clear all the programming, and reset the device codes to the default setting, do as above, except use "977" for step 2. Also, the same caution as above.
If you want to clear EVERYTHING, including device code assignment, and device upgrades, do the same as above except use "981" for step 2.
CAUTION: in addition to clearing the macros, it will also clear any device upgrade that the cable company might have put in the remote. On my Comcast remote, there is a "1376" device number upgrade that the remote uses for the cable box. This reset will clear that and you'd need a JP1.2 cable to upload that back on the remote.
I would think you'd probably want to do the first reset if you were playing around with keymoves. If you want to do a more thorough reset, you might do a 980 or a 977 reset and you can reprogram the macro for "On Demand" (or not, if you don't really use it). I wouldn't do the 981 reset though, unless you have a JP1.2 cable.
johnny76 02-19-07, 11:14 PM Thank you so much again Kupakai! Like you suggested, I went with the first option. I wasn't expecting such a detailed response, but I greatly appreciate you taking the time. One other question (sorry :confused: ), but is there a code that would allow me to access the Vizio settings menu through the Comcast remote? I just hate having to use the Vizio remote to change the TV settings like backlight and contrast, especially when it isn't close by.
Kupakai 02-19-07, 11:36 PM The menu key code is 00171. Use it in step 5 on the procedure outlined in my first post (post #9). If you are going to use the menu, you will also need the arrow keys and the OK key:
MENU = 00171
UP = 00168
DOWN = 00166
LEFT = 00170
RIGHT = 00037
OK = 00164
dmk1974 02-24-07, 11:26 PM Is there also by chance a code for the "Wide" button?

Try LG or Goldstar tv codes.

astrokat 07-30-07, 02:29 AM I just want to say this is an AWESOME forum and you all rock!!!! You guys have addressed a large portion of my setup but i have one missing piece. I have a Samsung Complete Home Theater System (HT-X40) which comcast had the code for. However, how can I control Receiver inputs with that remote?

I am using Code 1932.
Kupakai 07-30-07, 02:23 PM Try this to assign DVD input to a key:
1. Press and release AUX
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type 994
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 00249
6. Press and release the button you want to assign the function to
The remote should blink twice if programming is successful.
Repeat the above steps for the other input selection keys and use the codes below in step 5:
Tuner = 00057
AUX = 00121
I found these from JP1 site's (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums) upgrade files for similar models, but I haven't found one for USB, which I think your model has.
EDIT: I just looked at a similar model of Samsung HT device and I guess USB is accessed through the AUX button. Is that correct?

That is correct. It worked like a charm!!!! Thank you for your help.
irishmuth 12-31-07, 05:25 AM first of all, I can't thank you enough for all of your info. i now have my comcast remote controlling every function for my Vizio HDTV and just about every function for my Samsung HT-X40 All in One. The one function I cannot find that would make my Comcast remote truly universal are the fast forward/rewing and previous and last chapter buttons. I tried to go to the JP1 forums and looks at the file upgrades that you mentioned, but I have no idea how you extracted those codes from those text files. If you can provide the codes to assign these functions to my Comcast remote or just how you extracted them from JP1, I would be eternally grateful!
Thanks again.
Kupakai 12-31-07, 10:41 AM The one function I cannot find that would make my Comcast remote truly universal are the fast forward/rewing and previous and last chapter buttons.
Try these advanced codes:
SpeedUpFWD = 00219
SpeedUpREV = 00091
Next track = 00123
Prev Track = 00251
I tried to go to the JP1 forums and looks at the file upgrades that you mentioned, but I have no idea how you extracted those codes from those text files.
In order to read those files, you need to get Remote Master (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1339) (which in turn needs Java and a few other support files downloadable at the JP1 site). Change the remote pulldown menu to your remote. The codes you would use for the functions are the ones under "EFC" or "EFC5" if available. If the codes are 3-digit codes (ie when there's no "EFC5"), add two zeros to the front of the codes.
irishmuth 01-01-08, 03:17 PM the fast forward and rewind codes didn't work for some reason, but the next and previous tracks worked, which will let me skip through all the preview junk on DVDs and skip songs on CDs, so I'm happy.Thanks again!

Which Comcast remote do you have? Is the "Select/OK" button in the middle of the arrow keys red or grey? If it is grey, you should be able to use AUX/1932 and follow the steps starting in Post #30 to add missing functions, unless Samsung changed the protocol used in HT-X50.
If the button is red, Comcast seems to have taken out that code and there are no equivalent code you can use that I can find. Only way to do it in that case is to get a JP1.2 cable (http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1009) and add the upgrade yourself (assuming HT-X50 uses the same protocol as Samsung's other HT devices).
mattbkelly 01-02-08, 12:42 PM Thanks for the info on the comcast remote for the samsung home theater. I have the red select button. I don't know what those cords are?
Also, will my Visio remote work with my ht-x50?
Thanks,
Matt
Kupakai 01-02-08, 02:19 PM Also, will my Visio remote work with my ht-x50?
Is the remote that came with your TV universal version? If it is, setup code DVD/21932 should be get you some of the functions. It's made by the same OEM as the Comcast remote so you should be able to add missing functions the same way as the steps outlined above to program them in. If you need additional functions, post what are missing.
mattbkelly 01-02-08, 06:10 PM It worked for my Vizio universal remote but I need the codes to the volume and function, zoom and mute.
Thanks
Kupakai 01-02-08, 10:13 PM The volume and the mute should already be programmed but try these:

I Love all the info provided in the previous threads, but none of it has proven helpful in "completely" unlocking my COMCAST REMOTE ( http://www.therazor.org/images/comcast_remote.jpg ) to gain access to my VIZIO's higher functions (VIZIO P42 HDTV - SP42a.)
The code that I eventually used, that came via an email from a VIZIO customer service rep, was TV CODE 11756, which wasn't one of the codes mentioned previously on this thread. This code has allowed me to use my COMCAST REMOTE (see link above) to turn the TV on, control it's volume and provide me with limited access to the VIZIO MENU, which is useless, as it only lets me see the functions, like: PICTURE, AUDIO, SOURCE, GRAPHIC, CLOCK, SETUP ETC, but leaves me unable to access them to do anything.
I've tried all the codes and advice posted in other threads, but nothing seems to work. I also tried to reset the functions on the COMCAST REMOTE's "TV" function button, as advised in post #17, but that didn't work either.
CRAP!!!!
I joined this forum just to get this info, so hopefully someone here can provide some helpful advice. Needless to say, it will be very, VERY appreciated. :)
Thanks in advance.

download a Vizio manual from their website and try those codes, I have a VX37L and a GV42LF and both manuals are available online and have listings for programming other devices and also suggested codes for other brand remotes to work your tv.
To get from the menu to change the settings try using the arrowpad to highlight the setting category then down arrow to get into settings, left and right arrow to adjust, can do this with my Insight DVR remote.
Kupakai 01-08-08, 09:18 AM The code that I eventually used, that came via an email from a VIZIO customer service rep, was TV CODE 11756, which wasn't one of the codes mentioned previously on this thread.
I would imagine that the code you meant is TV/11758 (as Edmund suggested), since that's what's listed in the TV's manual, and that's what most Vizio TV's use. BTW, code TV/0178 uses the same protocol, to that would work just a well, and older Comcast remotes had that and not 11758, except possibly 11758 has more functions defined by default.
Using that setup code, you can add the missing functions by doing the following. For example to add Up Arrow function:
1. Press and release TV
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice.
3. Type 9 9 4
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 0 0 1 6 8
6. Press and release UP ARROW key
The remote should blink twice. Now the UP ARROW key should work. To add the rest of the missing functions, repeat steps 2-6, use the codes listed in POST #22 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9869800#post9869800) in step 5, and press the key you want to assign that function to in step 6.
scorehead 01-09-08, 04:52 AM First off, thanks for the replies. Any advice is appreciated.
I've tried the code TV/11758, but that just seems to be another code that doesn't work. Imputing that code, which the remote appears to except by "blinking twice," only yields me a dead remote, or, at least, one that isn't acknowledged by my VIZIO. I also tried code TV/0178, but that isn't read at all by the remote (No "blinking" happens to show acceptance.) I then input in the the original code back in, TV/11756, and was given back the limited functionality that I mentioned above. Again, this is the COMCAST remote that I'm using ( http://www.therazor.org/images/comcast_remote.jpg ), if that helps.
Just to be redundant, I then did as Kupakai suggested in post #49... starting with code TV/11758, followed by steps 1 - 6 with code 994, etc. All of this seems to be accepted by the COMCAST remote, but isn't acknowledged by my VIZIO. Then I put back in the original code TV/11756 that I had used, followed by inputing Kupakai's info for steps 1 - 6 and code 994 and applying it to UP ARROW KEY, which make the remote "Blink twice," but appears to make that particular key useless. Weird.
Again, with code TV/11756, I can access the menu and toggle through the menu options, but I am unable to press "OK" and access their individual functionality.
I've gone back and have tried a variety of codes provide in post #22, along with my original code TV/11756, and again all seem to be accepted by the COMCAST REMOTE, but the VIZIO doesn't read any of them.
As to the info that PETE W gave in post #48, I've already downloaded the manuel for the VIZIO P42 - SP42a, but the only codes that they provide are for, surprise... the VIZIO REMOTE.
What to do now? Should I just give in an buy the VIZIO UNIVERSAL REMOTE.
Thanks again guys!

I like the new Vizio remote that came with my GV42LF but mine may have been a dud and stopped working after about a month. I got frustrated with that and having no control over some of the TV stuf so I got a Harmony 550 and like it ok but it just didn't feel right, I'm used to the Insight cable remote and the one from my older VX37 that was a multi device remote and the striaght 550 was a little too different or maybe I didn't give it enough time since I bought a Harmony 880 from Amazon and now love it.
If you are considering spending $49 on a Vizio remote first go by BB or CC and check out the Harmony's see which feels comfortable, they all seem to work similar enough but the feel, shape and button layout varies and each model seems to have it's own following. you can get a 550 for about $80 and a 880 for about $140 maybe less on both.
Kupakai 01-09-08, 03:35 PM Before you give up on the Comcast remote, try this. I found an instance of Vizio TV using that code, so maybe you can try these advanced code set. Set the Comcast to TV/11756 and follow the same procedures as the top to add the missing functions. Some of those may not be relevant to your TV since they are for another model of Vizio TV that uses TV/11756. Try the "OK" functions first.

scorehead 01-11-08, 04:54 AM Thanks for the reply and advice, Kupakai. However, when I input the codes to designate a function to the COMCAST REMOTE, say applying a code to the UP ARROW KEY, or the "OK" button, all the codes seem to do is neutralize the buttons function all together. Meaning that when I apply a code to UP ARROW or LEFT or RIGHT ARROW, then I am unable to use it, or toggle UP, RIGHT, LEFT... what ever. It's like I get the exact opposite result that I want.
Has anyone ever encountered this?
Thanx,
- Sh
jeeprogar 01-23-08, 07:51 PM I'm trying to reset two vizio remotes based kupakai's instructions but am still having problems. I'm following these steps:
1) select TV
2) hold SET until two blinks
3) press 994
4) press TV (light blinks twice)
5) press TV (light blinks twice)
The light now blinks three times for every button that I push. Any idea's what might be wrong?
stutenn 01-25-08, 06:40 PM You guys are lifesavers! I never would have found that code for Vizios on the older (gray button) remotes. Thanks so much. I have both gray button and red button Comcast remotes: gray uses 4 digit codes and red uses 5 digit codes and it's a major hassle. The red button remotes (by red or gray I mean on the OK/Select button) don't recognize the Samsung HT-Q40 anymore but the gray button remotes do. I went to the Comcast office and had them dig a gray button one out of their return bin. They can do that for anyone who needs the older codes only found on gray button 3-way remotes.
By the way, if you need a link to get PDF files for all of Comcasts multiple remote types, in case anyone needs them, I can indicate it without putting it in as a URL. Go to comcast.com slash corporate slash customers slash customer_support slash remotes.hmtl
Thanks again! :)
macktruckmech 04-12-08, 04:42 PM I called there hot line and was informed to use LG or Goldstar code for my remote to work on my TV

Question: Is there a Picture Mode (Movie, Vivid, Game, Sport, etc) program code for the Vizio/0178 ? I didn't see it on your list Kupakai.
Thanks!

rlanza1054 06-21-08, 12:30 AM Hi there, I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask my question if not pls let me know which forum to post my question.
Ok, here is the deal, I just purchased the Vizio VP504F, the new 50 inch plasma 1080p.
It works great and was a steal in my opinion at $1399 at Costco Online, but I really wanted the 52 inch LCD. I also own a Samsung 40 inch LCD which is beautiful no complaints. Because my friend has a Panasonic Plasma, I was impressed by the blacks that you can't get on a LCD. So that's why I bit the bullet and went with the 50 inch plasma.
Again, everything works great, actually had to drive down the brightness and contrast. It's way too much with the default settings.
Oh man, I'm getting wordy. Sorry.. on to my question:
The 'VIZIO V-Remo Universal Remote VUR8' which is pretty nice and has a lot of features but for some reason I cannot program the remote for my Pioneer DSX812 (I think that's the number) receiver/amp 7.1 surround system. Not even the Pioneer DVD that came with the receiver.
All the codes in the manual don't work and I find it strange that these codes are not listed, this is a new remote according to Vizio tech support.
A few codes that they list to try are not even being accepted, which I find very strange.
So the question is: Does anyone know of a source of additional codes?
Or is there a possiblity that the remote I have came DOA, not a properly functioning remote and maybe I need to have Vizio replace it?
Thank you!
Rob
Try code 31023, what are the pioneer codes listed in the vizio manual?
Does anyone have a generic code for the Samsung HT-WZ410 Home Theater that will allow me to use the Vizio remote to control the Samsung?
I called Vizio and the tech that I talked to sounded like he was in the middle of a restaurant. It took me three times explaining what I was looking for before he got what I was talking about. Honestly, it sounded like he didn't want to be bothered, and as such, was no help at all. I know that a lot of times there are other component model codes that might work. He said to call Samsung.
I called Samsung, and they didn't have a code, so I am back at square one. I've already tried the 9-9-1 search with the Vizio remote and came up with nothing.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Unfortunately, this didn't help me, but it might help someone else. I went through the Vizio discussion forum, and apparently, they forgot to put the codes into the manual.

Hi... just got a vp504 & everything great but i must be missing something. i don't understand how to program my receiver, dvd, cable box w/o any codes to try. HELP!!! Thanks
There was an error in the manual there that caused the remote codes to be left out. You can use the codes from this PDF for the GV52LF as they are the exact same codes you would have had if the error had not taken place.
vizio.com/media/products/pdfs/GV52L+FHDTV+User's+Manual(1).pdf
Also those programming instructions for the remote will work as well. Sorry for the trouble!
rlanza1054 06-30-08, 12:29 PM Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
First here are the codes listed in the book: 31023, 30153, 30014, 30630, 30531.
This for Pioneer audio/amp section.
I own a Pioneer VSX-812 Home Theatre system, but the Pioneer itself is really a big amp/receiver with a lot and I mean a lot of input options.
Thanks Rob
PS Someone said this remote is made by a company called UEI. If thats true do they have a website that might list all the options this remote can do?
David Garrison 08-20-08, 01:14 PM Just started with Comcast HD Cable and Visio 32" TV. Read the threads and tried the 0178 code, but the 3in1 controller wouldn't accept it. Tried the other 4 number codes and no luck. Did the key find option (tv power) till my fingers were bleeding and no luck. Is there some other lock/unlock that allows the 3in1 controller to be reprogrammed. All in want is power and volume for the TV on the 3in1. Friend had same problem and he went and bout a 6 in 1 with the ir learning feature and had good lunk, but would like to use the controller I alsready paid for. Thanks in advance.

Try it with 5 digit code, like 10178, 10056.
David Garrison 08-20-08, 04:55 PM 1. Comcast has no clue how to solve my code issue for a visio TV. When I load in the code, like 0178 I get no response - not a double blink (good code) or a single blink for a bad code.
I thought the controller would not care what code was entered as long as it was a four digit one. Since I get neither, I assumed the controller must be defective, but they say (online chat with human) that the controller is OK, with the only issue being that since the visio is not listed as a brand in the contoller list, it cannot be accepted by or programmed into the controller.
Is this true?
When I tried the retreive the code option for the TVbutton using 991 i did not get a double blink, I assume that means there is no code entered for TV.
Rest of controller functions seem ok. Is there a way I can just program the volume and power functions in the controller and not use the TV brand function number (like 0178) Can a contoller have both 4 and5 digit codes.
David Garrison 08-20-08, 05:11 PM My controller is for the DVR 3 "On Demand" Device and not the Custom 3 "On Demand" device. It first is a 5-digit code and the second is a 4-digit code for those who ever get in same situation, Visio is listed as a supported TV with for the 5-digit device with codes of 10864, 10885, 11756, and 11758. Will see if they work this PM. No more replys from me mean they did work. Thanks for the Help.
David Garrison 08-21-08, 11:50 AM 11758 for a new 32" Visio HD LCD running on Comcast HD DVR Remote. Life is good.

ZippoMan 01-06-09, 02:40 AM How do you program the Power button? I know I have the right code because if I assign it to another key it properly turns off my device (in this case, a Logitech Z-5500). However, when I go through the steps and press the Power button as the key to assign it to, it blinks at me once in error. Any ideas?
The Robman 01-06-09, 11:12 AM Which remote are you trying to program? It sounds like there's a restriction programmed into your remote that is preventing you from programming a keymove to the POWER button. Can you program macros to the POWER button? If so, maybe you could designate another button as the pseudo-power button and then program a macro on the real POWER button that calls the pseudo-power button.

Here's a photo of the remote I have (http://www.coxhelpcenter.com/CoxFAQRelatedDocsList/remoterecord.jpg)
I haven't tried programing a macro, I am not sure how to do that. Thanks for any help you can provide,
ShortyT 01-08-09, 02:48 PM Anyone know the code for a Dishnet ViP722 remote that will allow it to toggle the inputs on a Vizio VOJ37 LCD TV? I can control ON/OFF & VOL.
Thanks.

jehawgfan 01-10-09, 04:07 PM The code for my Vizio VO42LF 1080P LCD that correctly programmed my Comcast universal remote was 0178. Hope that helps!
SputeBird 01-31-09, 01:41 PM I have a Pioneer VSX-918V Tuner. I used 610 to program the remote to turn my Vizio VW32L on and off.
gustavio 02-18-09, 08:11 AM Hello all,
Code 0178 worked perfectly for my non-HD Comcast cable box.
Code 0035 worked perfectly for my new HD Comcast cable box.
(Provides basic controls: on/off, channel up/dn, vol up/dn, menu, etc)
Note: Vizio is not listed on the Comcast list but "Sears" is listed so you may want to try some of thier codes if all else fails. Here's the codes for Sears:
0035, 0037, 0047, 0000, 0042, 0104, 1237
Good luck,
gustavio
letsbemyk 02-24-09, 11:39 PM I am hpoing someone out there has a solution for me. I recently got both a Vizio 50" plasma and Comcast HD. Using the remote for all basic functions is fine. My issue is whenever I adjust the volume the volume will again adjust (up or down depending on which direction I had just adjusted it) whenever I press ANY button on the remote. This has gotten very irrating and comcast has no answers for me. They suggested switching out the remote and that has done nothing. Any suggestions?
pansyiris 03-19-09, 06:17 PM I have an RCA universal remote that controls 6 devices and a brand new 37" Vizio TV that I can not get programmed in- Any other codes to try or any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

try the Goldstar tv codes.
sokh1985 07-08-09, 03:29 AM I have a kind of universal remote with my panasonic dmp-bd60 blu ray player. I tried the 0178 code for my vizio and everything works well except the input button which is kind of annoying since it allows to switch between tv/hdmi's.
Any clue on how to handle that. I tried the thing of Kupakai on the first page but since I don't have the same remote I don't have some of the keys that are on the hint. So it's not working
Thanks
