I can only hope that I am in the proper forum as I have never joined one before due to ADD like symptoms.
I'm doing everything I can within my cost restraints, I'm disabled, to stay up to date in the computer world but finding it difficult.
I'm working on a G3 Blue & White, 350mhz, w/2 installed hard drives one 6gig + one 4gig and 448mb of memory. I just up dated to OS X v10.2 and I have installed a DVD Superdrive burner from a G5, purchased from Ebay, replacing the CD play only system. I downloaded PatchBurn for Jaguar although it's telling me I don't need the Patch because my system is already recognizing the Drive which is true but it only plays CD's. This inspite of the fact Apple System Profiler lists it as a CD-RW/DVD-R.
I guess my question is: Could this be a Hardware problem or Software ???

My sincerest gratatude to any fellow Maclings ability to assist.

I wish I ould help, but I don't much about your problem. You might want to check out http://macosx.com/ for tech support. I've heard good things about them, even though I've never used them.

God speed!

Is it a burned DVD or a purchased DVD? I know that some of the drives had issues recognizing DVD+R media

Here's a good place to start finding out what you can and can't do with that older Mac:

Look for your configuration under the main Database: Drive Compatibility menu here:

Powermac G3s require a DVD decoder card for DVD playbackUm...no, they don't. There's an OS9 hack for DVDPlayer that allows them to play on my B&W, and I simply use VLC in OSX Panther. A card could certainly help, though.

true, but if you don't apply the hack (I'd had totally forgotten about that) or have the card installed It won't play DVDs. I don't know if there is a hack for Mac OS X, though.

I use a G3 for my htpc under mac os x, but I have the decoder card. I may unplug it tonight and see what happens.

DVDs play just fine in OSX (using VLC) without an MPEG card. At least on my G3.

edit: DVDs play fullscreen just fine on OSX despite dropping a few frames, but in OS9, the system tends to lock up if the DVDPlayer's viewer is stretched larger than 3/4 size. Again, this is without the optional daughtercard.

I installed a Superdrive (Phillips 102, I think) in my PCI graphics G4 400. That's essentially a G3 machine. It worked fine for DVD burning.
