View Full Version : Customer Reports About Their Professional Calibrations
htwaits 08-19-06, 03:47 PM This thread is a list of links to reports by owners about the results of having their RPTV, CRT, or FP sets professionally calibrated.
Some owners have posted their calibration reports in this thread, but it's much better for other owners if those reports are posted in a thread dedicated to the model display that's been calibrated.
The list was started in August of 2006, but includes a few reports done earlier. To have your report included in these lists, it's important to indicate who calibrated your display. Where possible, the lists are organized by model, and the AVS user name of the calibrator. If an audio calibration was done, that's also indicated.
If you find reports that I've missed, or if you have had a calibration done yourself, please PM me or post here giving the location of the report. I will try my best to keep this list updated.
Links to reports about direct view and projection (front and rear) displays check this post. For flat panel (Plasma and LCD) reports check Post #2 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8305211#post8305211).
Contact Information:
It's easy to contact anyone who is registered at AVS. If you click on their "User Name" in the upper left hand corner of any message that they post, you can either send a personal message, or if they have listed one, visit their personal web page. Almost all of the professional calibrators who's work is discussed in this list have included their web page URL as part of their AVS profile.
I have no contact information for the calibrators who are not members of AVS. Contacting their customers might be one way to reach them.
A quick way to find a post written by any AVS member is to click on "Search" followed by a click on "Advanced Search". Then fill in the "Search by User" box and click on "Search Now".
A way to find a calibrator in your area is to use these AVS threads.
ISF Calibrators, where are you located? Please post here! (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=586330)
You can use the "Search this Thread" option to narrow the list down to your state. Many of the best calibrators travel extensively so you may be closer to one than you think. :)
Is Factory Calibration Possible?
Comments by professional calibrators:
UMR thinks it's possible, expensive, and incomplete. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10237051&&#post10237051)

htwaits 08-31-06, 03:23 PM Are there reports from unhappy owners?
Here is the only one I've found since starting this thread.
Is this a report from an unrealistic owner? Very possible, and now very likely based on the later posts to the thread before it was closed. (01/30/2007)
Since I joined AVS in 2002 I've read a couple of reports where the customer wasn't happy. Since I started this thread, this is the first "unhappy" calibration customer that I've read about. (01/28/2007)
According to the owner this is a "Bad isf calibration" (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=781401) of a LCD flat panel TV.
If you read the whole thread you will learn a lot about what to do, and what not to do, when looking for satisfaction from a professional calibration. Try to ignore the parts that are plain silly.
The calibrator posted his results from the calibration session in question, and this is a link to that data. I hope that anyone concerned about this thread will be sure to read the end of the thread starting at this link.

ChrisWiggles 08-31-06, 06:18 PM It might also be helpful to post this in the calibration forum as well, thanks for your efforts in linking these!
ogbuehi 08-31-06, 07:41 PM Is there just one small post on a customer result for the Sony XBR1?
htwaits 08-31-06, 07:44 PM It might also be helpful to post this in the calibration forum as well, thanks for your efforts in linking these! You're welcome.
I put a link to your "Go-to Guide for Source Options" in message #3.
I will post a link in the calibration forum, but I'm afraid it won't stay around very long. I've been using this thread to answer inquiries about calibration by referring people to it's link in my signature.
ogbuehi 08-31-06, 07:55 PM If you find others let me know.
I was really hoping to get a good semi-detailed description of how much improved a XBR1 looks after calibration as I'm looking into getting the 70XBR2.
htwaits 08-31-06, 07:57 PM I was really hoping to get a good semi-detailed description of how much improved a XBR1 looks after calibration as I'm looking into getting the 70XBR2.You might ask UMR.
Beaker1024 10-12-06, 04:15 PM No one has had a Pannasonic PT-XXLCyy (xx = diag size; y=13,15,64 etc.. [model #]) set ISF calibrated? Or any helpful starting points for DVE? I have been using DVE from the start and touching up ever 1k hr of lamp time or so (ends up being just uping brightness just slightly).
Anything else to think of?
Just asking encase there is something I haven't thought of.
htwaits 10-18-06, 09:57 PM The first post in this thread is developing a larger list of calibration reports. :)
It would be great if more owners of calibrated sets would post their comments and PM me about including those comments.
We need more variety! :o
Thanks for the help.

davidwb 01-03-07, 08:26 PM Here is the information on the ISF calibration done on my Pioneer Elite Pro-630 HD:
calibrated by Chuck Williams
cmwtek@aol.com
He's located in San Francisco, but used to be in Washington, DC (used to be the head tech for Meyer Emco) and often makes trips back east. He is an independent calibrator, now.
Chuck does a complete calibration, including cleaning. Picture was much improved after the calibration, and on this great RP CRT, the picture is incredibly life-like. I highly recommend him.

Thanks Htwaits! I knew you would know. I am not selling it for 6 months or so and I want it to look good for me till then. I am sure its only worth 300-400 buck tops. I am trying to wait and see what comes out of CES next week. Better Led DLP or Laser DLP, new Lcos ect. Just not totally satisfied with any of the current crop. I figure anything good for this year will not be out till the summer or fall so i'll have to wait that long. Oh well, it give me more time to save a bigger chunk, cause you know the new stuff will not be cheap.
Cobra5wood 01-04-07, 02:27 PM Can anyone recommend an excellent ISF calibrator in the western suburbs of Chicago, Il.?
Trigger445 01-09-07, 02:23 AM I have owned a Pro-510HD for about 5.5 years. After about 5 years, I had the "blue flash" and I fixed it myself, using instructions from this website--otherwise I may have simply gotten rid of the set. Well, I have always been impressed with the HD picture, and thought the SD picture was OK, until yesterday. I had calibrated it myself fairly well with the Avia disk, and had surface cleaned my optics once. However, now, all I can say is "wow, I never knew what I was missing"--I am amazed. Why? Well, yesterday, Mr Bob came and calibrated the set, cleaned the optics, and did an overscan reduction on my TV.
The basic cleaning of the optics is included in his basic calibration package (wiping off the top of the lenses and mirrors)(I had done this once before myself about 1 year ago, and it made a nice difference then, but was filthy again), but I also opted for the deep cleaning (removing the lens and cleaning the bottom of it and the convex below the lens)(wow, it was really dirty). I think this made the most "bang for the buck" difference, as the colors are now much more vibrant and alive than ever! If you have only a limited amount of money, at least contact him and at least have him "consult" with you on doing it yourself, or if you can, fly him and and have him do it--you'll be amazed.
The next best thing in my opinion was the calibration itself, which included mechanical focus of the lenses. My red and green were off a bit, and the blue was way off. Using his cantelever technique, he adjusted the red and green lenses to a sharp focus, and got the blue where it needed to be. Once the lenses were focused, he adjusted the convergence and at the same time took in the overscan reduction (overscan reduction was for additional price). With the overscan reduction, I have about 2 more inches worth of picture on the top and sides, and no longer is the scrolling box scores and headline news ticker cut off--it is like zooming out on the picture that is already there, effectively giving you more "pixels" on your fixed screen size. The overscan reduction took quite some time for him to align everything along the perimeter, as it takes in all the errors that are inherent at the perimeter in the design (which is why they overscan the picture to begin with, so you don't see the errors). Finally, he adjusted the greyscale, getting it much more of a true gray and the color/brightness/contrast/sharpness. The basic calibration (everything in this paragraph, except the overscan reduction) was the "second most bang for the buck" in my opinion, and the overscan reduction is a nicety, but certainly not required if you are trying to save a buck.
He was at my house for about 7 hours, and the picture I have right now on HD is absolutely amazing--far better than before (and I thought it was great to begin with)--breathtaking and truly vibrant, and the standard def picture is now great too. Even though he concentrated his effort on 1080i full screen as my primary "scanrate" for the overscan reduction/geometry adjustment/color alignment, the optics cleaning and the focus are both universal in their "help" to the other scanrates (480I/P). I now see why everyone says the CRT is the best out there--I thought they were all crazy until I had it ISF calibrated professionally--Thanks Mr Bob!

htwaits 01-22-07, 01:28 PM I have Samsung HL-Sxx87W, is there anyone in the Baltimore area that can be recommended for calibration?
What does this sort of thing cost?Check the first post in this thread. Many of the best calibrators do tours to different parts of the country. Eliab and UMR are two who probably travel to your area on a regular basis.
SNOW MAN 01-22-07, 03:14 PM If a calibrator is ISF Certified and has the latest and greatest equipment, does that mean that that person should be able to calibrate any rear projection set properly? Or should I look for an individual who has experience with my particular TV? (KDS-R60XBR2)

I would go with reputation, and experience with the set in question.
If a calibrator is ISF Certified and has the latest and greatest equipment, does that mean that that person should be able to calibrate any rear projection set properly? Or should I look for an individual who has experience with my particular TV? (KDS-R60XBR2)
Definitely not.
ISF does not teach ANYTHING about the image structure requirements of CRT technology, whether it's DV or triple-gun projection, RPTV or FPTV/ceiling projector. Optics cleaning, focusing, geometry, convergence, astigmatism, sheimpflug...these are all things that COULD come into play in calibrating a CRT based projector, and many of them are absolute staples, that have to be performed EVERY time. This is in addition to everything they do teach in class, which is needed on all display units, be they CRT or fixed pixel.
They mention red push and color decoding, but did not teach that either.
When I did my first ISF course, I was the ONLY calibrator in the class! It was made up primarily of HT retailers who needed to know in depth knowledge of the home theater business to be able to pull in those major investments, plus their installers. There were 30 or so in the class, and this included about half a dozen guys who were simply enthusiasts and they wanted to know more.
Now, there is no better place to learn all the ins and outs of home theater than in Joel's ISF class. Joel can tell true stories that most could only hope to be privy to - they are immensely informative and educating, and keep you spellbound all thru the class. I loved it! But they only have time enough for what they do teach. Which simply is not anywhere near enough to handle CRT projection technology.
Even if someone does pay attention in class and has the best equipment, efficacy is in the hands of the practitioner.
I agree, reputation and word of mouth is the best indicator out there, for how good a calibrator is.

Mr. Bob , Or anybody. Has anyone got a memo from Sony on what each of the DRC settings do ? Mode 1 (sugested most inputs), Mode 2 for DVD Players that up convert to 1080 I or 720 P, Mode off no adjustment. Some say DRC Mode off is better for sports , fast moving action. Here is two Places that a test was done, but not on the newer KDS-R 60XBR 2 . http://www.hometheatermag.com/hookmeup/1106hook/ & He also has a Web started.... http://hdguru.com/?page_id=2 I have looked at the Service Manual . I think Sony has a Teck. info if You have the password to get Manual & more sugestions on set up & what each mode does ? ...
This is somewhat a change of subject; but still related to ISF. Does anyone know if when the tech calibrates grayscale on warm setting (SXRD XBR1) the flat scale also applies to "natural" and "vivid"? I realize that the overall temp will not be 6500k; I just wonder if these other settings are "flattened".
I always with My XBR 950 with close UMR settings,& Now SXRD XBR 2 set the natural for the best B&W Picture. Then use the same settings on all other modes. I use custom switch from Cool to Natural set the Blue Drive for White not blue in natural. Then look for Green vs. Red Drive for a natural white. Bias is in the Dark areas of the Picture. If all Your dark areas show Blue,Red,Green this is what You set. In the old days We would always have more Red because you lose Red on analog signals for fringe area's. Ah ! Was also going to the 6500 k. Remember Vivid is to sell TV's at the TV Store with the brightest Picture. So that is why You only get Cool, natural settings in Vivid. Warm 2 as You can see in the reviews is the best setting for 6500k. Some watch a B&W movie & say that's to Red . So warm 1 or Natural may look better for You. Look at Your DVD cases... Some show You a proof picture true B & W & or one with a 6500k Picture. Remember a true Calibrater & good equipment is the only way for perfection. If You get the Best TV of any brand... You need perfection...

ISF calibration - or fullscale/fullservice CRT calibration, which includes the ISF aspects but is much more extensive than the standard ISF calibration - is there for you to create the most lifelike picture possible for you, and instill the most suspension of disbelief possible in your display system.
If that is what you are striving for in your video games, the same principles would apply.
In a word, yes.

Just had my Samsung HLS 5687 calibrated by David Abrams of Avical, and I am very pleased with the results. Even my wife who was very skeptical noticed a great deal of improvement in both color, overall "brightness" and shadow detail in the set. David was very professional and easy to talk to, and he even took time to explain in detail (without going over my head) what he was doing. Being a new home theatre enthusiast this is the best investment I have made, and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get the most out of their home theatre investment.

Prior to calibration my reds and black/white levels were quite off and I was getting alot of SSE and fuzzy images from my D* HR20-700 over HDMI (especially on HD sports where there was quite a bit of moving images). Planet Earth is particulary amazing now.
My SD over componenet was also calibrated and is excellent now
I will post settings later.
For gaming, we also calibrated an Xbox360 for DVD and it seemed to work extremely well for gaming. In darker areas I can see details that were totally blacked out prior.
Overall very happy.

Eliab,
We are simply amazed with the results of your 2nd calibration for us on our new Sammy LNS3241D LCD TV. The first calibration on our Sammy HLN507W left us in awe. It was a no brainer to have you apply your calibration skills on this set as well.
In both cases, you've enhanced our visual experience by bringing the images on screen to life. You've added a dimension of viewing pleasure to an already amazing product. Your work brings out the true potential of the device. Colors are more vibrant and lifelike, skin tones are detailed and precise, and dark scenes have good depth to retain definition and clarity. This adds to our overall viewing experience by giving a heightened feeling for the environment you are viewing. Whether its a bright sunny day or a cold grey wintery scene, your calibration accentuate the sets true capabilities which intensifies and clarifies the producer's genuine intentions.
Your skills are truly an art form. Along with your consummate professionalism, your services are invaluable to anyone that is seeking to get the best possible picture from their display unit. Your skills in calibration really make a huge difference in maximizing the potential of what the display is capable of producing.
Looking forward to securing your services on my next unit!

Let me know if there's something I can do to give back to you, now that you have given so much to us calibrators so far. How about a complimentary house call and optics cleaning, if you have a CRT set? It's on the house.
Next time I'm gonna be around PA, I would be glad to stop by and check out your sys and see if there's something I can do for you, either for nothing if it's something like optics cleaning, or for greatly reduced rates if it's a calibration. Or a free checkout of your sys. Yesterday I did a checkout on a guy's new 1080p Samsung, and to the amazement of both of us, it needed no calibration! Was not strictly linear in its grayscale tracking, but averaged out, at his chosen light level it needed no calibration work on grayscale!
And with the DVE filters - the best filters out there, that I know of - it didn't have red push either, and was in fact VERY linear in its color decoding. Didn't need any work there either.
Keep up the good work -

I don't have the exact model number, but it looked like a 57", and was 1080p, so you know it's the latest and greatest new offering in their lineup. All plasmas before it will have been 720p.

Yes, and there were no problems at all with it. Everything straight and very linear in there. As a fixed pixel plasma, this was not unexpected. I have never seen a plasma with bowed edges, as it's all fixed. I don't believe that can be changed, in a plasma.

Yes, there has been a 73" CRT in their lineup since their initial early adopter HD units began, their WS 73903 was one of the very first of their HDreadys. Till they stopped making ANY CRT based units about 3 years ago. They stopped making DV CRTs many years before that.
Triple gun, of course, not DV. 42" was the world's largest DV CRT, made by Sony on a limited basis, never thoroughly mass produced and marketed.
It only went up to S video in res, was not HDready, was before that time. Looked fantastic, tho, for SD video, both that and the Mit 40" did. Mit never made HDready DV CRT, tho Sony came out with their sizzling 34" DV HDready, with limited convergence capabilities and the first to ever make a 16x9 DV CRT, ready and eager for true HD content. Those really respond to supertweaking on the image structure, tho were not as equipped as the RPTV class of HDreadys.
Prospective HDready new buyers can prolly find excellent deals on the Sony 34" DV on the used market. It would be hard to find a better DV HDready.

do you keep a thread going for plasma and lcd calibrations?
i'd like to check it out if you do or someone else does
thanksYes. There are two threads. This one and a flat panel thread. They are both cross linked at the top of the first message in each thread.

Thank you for the recommendation! I hope things are going well up north. :)

Sorry, I just have to crow a little...
I just learned that I have been mentioned on the Curt Palme site, a site dedicated to the best CRT reproduction possible, primarily dealing with the immensely capable and expensive triple gun CRT front projectors, the kind they used to buy $20,000 Faroudja scalers for. It is dedicated to the best big screen picture possible, and ceiling pj people are incredibly dedicated to that site. It's a reference site, it's where the REALLY committed videophiles go to get their systems looking their best.
This was in regards to equipment they sponsor there that successfully transcodes HDMI video to component, in all its splendor, with its resulting images NOT limited or neutralized by HDCP. And arriving at the display fully ceiling projector grade.
So if you have a component-only CRT RPTV and have been considering buying new just to get HDMI, your worries are over. Keep your set, spend a few hundred equipping it with ceiling pj grade transcoding equipment, and continue to enjoy the incredible images your CRT set is capable of, head and shoulders better than a lot of the new tech out there, and standing shoulder to shoulder with the best of it.
I am mentioned there in a testimonial by James A, whose Mit 55905 I just calibrated last week, around a year 2001 HDready model. He swears by it, says his set now "outperforms some of the newest stuff out there"...
Check the Curt Palme site -

and this in particular, it's in the testimonials down below -

badfinn 10-03-08, 09:03 AM I just had Chad Billheimer calibrate my Hitachi F57 crt on wednesday. Chad showed up exactly on time and was very easygoing and proffesional.
I have been following the tweaks thread for this model for a while, and while I am certainly no expert, I was fairly happy with my picture. But I just knew it could look a little better, so I contacted chad at hdtvbychad.com.
He spent almost six hours working on my set, answering all my questions that I'm sure he's heard a million times.
The end result was way more than what I expected. I thought my tv looked good before, but now it's like a whole new set! The colors, the fleshtone, the black detail all have been improved significantly. Movies in Bluray look 3 dimensional, even my crappy local cable looks watchable.
I highly recomend ChadB as a calibrator. His fee is very reasonable, and there are no travel charges. Even way up in no man's land Minnesota where I'm at.
htwaits 10-03-08, 07:22 PM I just had Chad Billheimer calibrate my Hitachi F57 crt on wednesday. Is your set a RPTV?
It will do Chad more good if you post your report in an owner's thread. Let me know if you are able to do that, and then I'll add your report to the correct list.
Thanks.
badfinn 10-03-08, 07:51 PM Sorry about that. I did read that it was better to post this in the owners thread, but the one for mine seems to have disappeared.
The tweaks thread is still alive, but I didn't want to go off topic there. (although this was the ultimate tweak)
Also, to aswer your question, yes my hitachi CRT F57 is a rear projection unit.

blueglide 10-17-08, 12:27 PM My wife and I somewhat reluctantly purchased a calibration service from Best Buy (Grand Rapids, MI) in August when we bought a new Samsung 52' LCD. I wasn't sure if it was necessary or just a 'dealer pack' to get a few more dollars in the sale. The salesman we had was very nice and helpful and we enjoyed spending several hours with him as we purchased our TV and home theater equipment so we decided to trust him on the calibration as well. Well, yesterday, Aaron (from the Muskegon, MI store) came out and performed the calibration and I was very happy with the service. Aaron was very professional, explained everything, and answered all my questions. I had been reading a great deal in these forums about our new TV, home theater, and calibration, so I had an idea of what to ask and what to expect. The before/after was dramatic although some of the real significant changes were not perhaps as visual. The temp change, white balance were way off the 'standard'. Overall, I was very happy with the calibration and would recommend it to my friends in the area.

rydenfan 10-17-08, 03:09 PM Last night I had the priviledge to have Jeff of www.accucalhd.com (UMR on the forum) over to my house for both a full ISF calibration on my Samsung 61A750 LED DLP and a full audio calibration (which was equally, if not more amazing). The difference in the set before and after his work is absolutely stunning!! This is not a minor improvement. Colors were way off from way they should be and it took him multiple hours to truly dial in the set. It is now a different TV. I promise you I am not over hyping this. I can assure you that you would feel the same way.
We were able to achieve colors basically on par with the newest Pioneer Elite Plasmas The Pioneer plasma still obviously has better black levels but that is not something that is adjustable. This calibration truly allows DLP technology to shine. For the few hundred dollars it costs to get this done, it is an absolute no-brainer and the best investment you can make in this set. Even with additional cost of the calibration you are still thousands of dollars below a plasma of similar size, and now very close in performance. I am hopeful Jeff will respond here with some of his graphs and data to further show you what I am talking about. Turst me, do not even think about it, just do it.
Enough cannot be said about both the caliber of work Jeff does and the caliber of person that he is. Obviously, please add me to the list of extremely satisfied UMR customers :)
and here is some data from his trip:

Skyhawk85u 11-08-08, 08:43 AM I bought a TH50PX80U a few weeks ago and included the calibration service from Circuit City. I hung out with the calibrator for a while but didn't get that much out of it. He was very impressed with his job (which took well under an hour.) Then I came here and started playing around with settings that other people are using. WOW, what a difference - everything looks SO much better now. What a waste. I'm thinking about calling them up to complain but I probably won't bother getting around to it.

There's a typo in the prior posted address. Chad's site is http://www.hdtvbychadb.com/index.html
While I don't know Chad personally, I have participated in beta testing for CalMAN Pro with him. His contributions were considerable and quite knowledgeable, so I would expect his calibrations to reflect what I have observed. I would use him without reservation.

This just came in over at the Don't Dump your CRT RPTV thread -
First post here.
I have a Pioneer HD 710 RPTV. It had never been calibrated although I knew it should have been.
2 days ago Mr. Bob come over and did a "supertweak" job on my set. Including internal cleaning, overscan reduction, gray scale adjustment removing a green cast that for years was making me green from watching. Adjustment of centerpoints of my tint, color, contrast etc, and superfine reconvergance. Last night, I watched Blade Runner in HD and I have not seen this movie in such high quality since I last saw it in a theater. Probably in better quality.
Many thanks to Mr. "Supertweak" Bob
My 710 has never looked this good. I hope it lasts forever.
Rob
Rob was an incredible host during this event, which took so long he had to put me on his couch that night, to finish up late the next day! That's how long it takes to really stem to stern a 710, same kind of time it took to do the 710 I did in Albuquerque earlier that week. But worth it!
I was sorry we had not taken before and afters of the images, as the green in the blacks was literally obnoxious, the blue in the whites only slightly less so, and the overscan left him only shards of the writing at the top and bottom of his screen.
After the job, everything was available for watching, nothing was cut off anymore, the picture was so tight and crisp you could now sit his 8' away - for a huge picture - and watch the grain of the film used to shoot the movies watched on his Elite BluRay. The color was absolutely sizzlingly lifelike now, there was depth and transparency he had not seen since it was new, and he doesn't have to push his Black Level up above zero anymore! AND I got a ride to dinner in his pride and joy, a Porsche they didn't even have 3 years ago!
Thank you again, Rob, it was my pleasure -
;)
Mr Bob
This came in recently about my trip to Albuquerque, where I did Ken's Pioneer 710:
Bob, the TV set looks great! What I have noticed so far is that the whites are whiter and brighter, and the blacks are blacker. Colors are different than they were too. The menu colors are more subtle, with more hue gradation.
But it is the whites and blacks that really make the picture look better, I think.
The two restaurants in Oakland I mentioned are:
Bellanico (Park Blvd. about 1/2 mi. from 13): http://www.bellanico.net/
Pizzaiolo on Telegraph: http://www.pizzaiolooakland.com/
They're both excellent and not too pricey.

I just ran across one from '07 from Trigger 445, at this link:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9401033#post9401033, post #879:
"I have owned a Pro-510HD for about 5.5 years.
I now see why everyone says the CRT is the best out there--I thought they were all crazy until I had it ISF calibrated professionally--Thanks Mr Bob!"
Here was my reply:
"One of the side benefits Trigger got was that his grayscales on 480i and p got done in the process of doing the HD, even tho he didn't pay for any work on 480. Pioneer HDreadys are built on a "layered" grayscale and colorations system, where STD - S-video - is the basis, and affects all other modes - like the 1080i, 480p and component vs. S. The grayscale for STD is done first because it sets all the others in the process, then I did the HD as well, which is built on top of the STD settings.
The grayscale and color/tint for HD also apply to 480p, so he got those as perks. We didn't do the geometry/convergence on 480, but he can correct that at will in his user advanced grid, at least on red and blue.
After I was done I said, "Let's slide these viewing chairs up a bit." I believe they were at 8' and went to 6', but I'll let him correct me on that if need be. When we did, he sat back and said, "It's remarkable, the picture looks just as good up here." What's that, a 25% increase in viewed picture size? I don't know if he'll keep it that way, as the room ergonomics may not allow for it, but he at least knows he CAN if he wishes!
It was quite a fun job, and the meal his wife served all of us was just absolutely mouth watering, please convey that to her for me, Trigger.
And thanks for the nod! If between us we can save just a few more Pioneer HDreadys owned by people who are at present still on the fence about whether to keep or trash their sets, your words will have been more powerful than you know."

I just had my plasma calibrated last week by an ISF tech I found on avsforum and with good credentials. The only equipment he used was a spectroradiometer to set the white balance. Everything else he did was using his eyes and test patterns. He brought another machine with Sencore on the bag but he didn't use it. He said he knew the color was right in the custom space. Is this normal?

Yes, I think that could be OK provided he's familiar with your display, which it sounds like he is. On most displays there is not much sample to sample variation with color space and decoding, especially if it's a simple question of "wide" vs. "custom" or something like that.
Using the spectro for grayscale will also tell you the luminance and gamma, and he may have measured the color gamut with it as well. Color decoding can be done either by the visual method or by measurements, depending on your display and if it has color isolation controls.

Not unless you adjust it.
Zygmunt 11-30-08, 01:29 PM Hi SJKel
Not enough information to give you final opinion.
He used spectroradiometer so he could gather all information about your display he needed. You didn’t mention model and type of your plasma, so we don’t know if your plasma has CMS or any color decoder control. If it doesn’t – he couldn’t do anything anyway.
Some setups are known well to calibrators. For example if your set has color space 1 and 2 and no CMS – calibrator has two option only and knowing your plasma he knows which one is closer to Rec709
In Sencore bag it could be just his backup equipment (or audio equipment).

The set is a Samsung Plasma PN50A650. I believe there are 3 possible choices for color space: auto, native and custom. Within custom, I believe one can individually adjust the red/green/blue, but my calibrator didn't change anything once he chose custom, after watching each choice for a while.

In that case...
It would be best to calibrate the custom. I've recently done a few Samsung LCDs with that menu, and I was able to make a big improvement by doing so.
The software the calibrator uses can play a role here. I've used Progressive Labs and Sencore software briefly (older versions), and Colorfacts and CalMAN (both latest versions) long term. The only software that really allowed me to make CMS adjustments like that without external help is CalMAN. The others just don't have tools for that, though I will not say it's impossible because you can still take the data and try to do some math on your own. It's just that if your software doesn't have tools to help you do a certain task, it's easier to genuinely think it's unimportant.
I've been doing this for 6 years, and if I would have run across your set back before I got CalMAN and knew proper luminance levels for the primaries and secondaries I would not have been able to do as good a job. Working with the filters, as one would tend to do with the other programs on sets that do not have color isolation, would have been very frustrating, inaccurate, and probably wouldn't have made much improvement.

Thanks, but I already paid for the calibration and I don't think I can afford a second one in the near future. I have to say the picture already improved significantly after the calibration.
Zygmunt 12-02-08, 08:18 AM Chad made a point.
CalMan and specrioradiometer - perfect team for calibration.
Picture already improved significantly after the calibration so he did a right job.
last week, mr bob came out to my place to calibrate my hitachi 43fdx01b. it was actually his second trip to work on my set. i had a good amount of work done. the convergence ics were done, so he took care of that repair. he also cleaned the optics, did an overscan reduction using shims, and did a basic calibration (focus adjustment, grayscale, convergence, geometry, color and tint adjustment). total amount of time to complete the work was 12+ hours.
the results are amazing. after more than 5 years, this was the first professional calibration of my set, so it looks better than it did on day one. everything's much better, but the biggest differences are in the contrast and convergence. there's more details in the darks and images are very sharp. high def sources look great. standard def looks much better too.
mr bob did a great job and was a pleasure to work with. highly recommended.

Thanks, Al, it was a pleasure.
At first I was not sure that Al was going to want to plunk down what it would take to do what he wanted to do - all we could - to get his set to its maximum potential, as it is one of the smaller sets.
But afterwards looking at his face with that bewildered look to it, like "God, why didn't I do this 5 years ago!", and that silly grin in his eyes as he stared at his "new" set, I knew we both had made the right choice. (I am very familiar with that grin, from looking in the mirror...:D)
Another CRT maxed out the nth degree of performance! And satisfaction!
Had a blast, Al, thanks!

Zurbaran1 12-09-08, 11:38 AM This weekend I had my Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR8 professionally calibrated by the awesome Kevin Miller. I have had this set since October and absolutely love it to death. The picture was great pretty much straight out of the box but now, after Kevin had gotten his hands on it, it is breathtaking. Simply amazing. The money spent on Kevin's services is money 100% well spent. Kevin worked on my set for over 2 hours. The man is the consummate professional and a real gentleman. He took the time to explain everything he did to me and then some. I learned a great deal about my set from him. I could not be happier. I have had several people over the house since Kevin did his magic and the jaw-dropping expressions on their faces when they sit in front of the TV is priceless. I can't recommend Kevin highly enough. If you live in the NYC area and are considering a pro-calibration consider yourself lucky to have one of the best at your disposal and take advantage of it. neal4470 12-10-08, 12:43 PM I just wanted to leave a reference for Tom Huffman. He did my 5020FD over the weekend using ControlCal to adjust the grayscale and man does it look sharp.
Don't pay BB or CC or anybody else to calibrate your XX20 series Pio unless they use ControlCal. To my knowledge, Tom is one of about three guys on the east coast who does it right.
Tom has a website called displaycalibrations.com he works out of Rockville, Md.
Thanks again, Tom!

tonkaxl 12-11-08, 10:14 PM I had my set calibrated by Chad Billheimer (HDTVbyChadB.com). He did an awesome job. I had attempted to calibrate a couple of the settings myself and only accomplished making things worse. Chad spent the entire day, took his time, and got everything looking perfect! I cannot give any higher recommendation. He beat all the local guys prices by a couple hundred bucks, and I honestly believe he did a more thorough job than any of the local shops ever would have.

moose129 12-12-08, 08:13 PM Yesterday I had my 2 year old Samsung HPS5053 professionally calibrated by Gregg Loewen of Lion AV. WOW!!!! My plasma has almost 5000 hrs on it and it looks like he hung a brand new tv on my wall, well better than brand new because I have never seen picture detail like this anywhere. He was done around 5:30 and after he left I stayed up until 2am watching all of my favorites because it was like I was seeing them for the first time. No house is too far out of the way and no display is too far gone for him to work his magic on. The best part of it all is that it is like you are just hanging out with one of your good friends. He also explained everything he was doing to where one of my kids could understand. Great guy and awesome calibrator. I officially have the best looking display in Toney Alabama. Eight thumbs up from the Sipps family.

Don Berry 12-14-08, 09:59 PM A couple of days ago Chad Billheimer was here to calibrate my modified Barco 808s. The projector has P16LNP tubes, mounted in Barco Liquid-Coupled housings (with Schliemphlug adjustments) HD-18 lenses and higher frequency amps and input board. I was running 1080i @ 60hz and felt like I had a pretty good picture but knew it wasn’t quite as good as it could be. The results were amazing! After spending way more hours than he should have, Chad had the projector resolving 1080p @ 60hz with a near perfect Gray scale and the improvement in the picture is remarkable! I feel this was money well spent and would recommend Chad’s services to anyone. Here is a link to a few pictures: http://www.berryhometheater.com/test/808%20Calibration/chadcalibration.html

Mr Bob
BASICEO 12-23-08, 08:15 AM Pioneer 5020 Calibration
Let me start by saying that I am not a neophyte when it comes to Flat Panel Display devices. I bought my first Plasma in 2000 and since that time, I have had 4 more panels. I try to update to newer technology every 18 months. My first panel was a Fujitsu marketed under the Onkyo Integra brand name. I'll not bore you with what the unit cost in 2000.
I have used both Plasma and LCD technologies and always return to Plasma after judging picture quality. I still have one LCD in one of the guest bedrooms but that is another story.
As my 18 month upgrade pate came about, I made a decision to acquire a Pioneer 5020 to replace my Panasonic TH50PH9UK (Pro Series). What a great decision I made.
Once I received the unit, I set it up in a spare office and started the 200 hour preliminary break-in process (using BruZZI & Angelo2's Break-In DVD) running on my PS3 which I brought from home. The unit ran non-stop for over 200 hours.
Keeping a log of time, I reached the 200 hour mark and moved the unit to my home, set it up using D-Nice's post Break-In setting and sat back and enjoyed a truly great picture. At this point, I had no doubt that the unit was superior to the TH50PH9UK. Little did I know that the image I was so impressed with was only "Half Way There".
On December 20th, I had the pleasure of D-Nice visiting my home to perform a calibration. I had been in touch with him all day as he had multiple calibrations to perform in the Charlotte area before getting to me. He arrived at my home around 8:30 PM and started to perform his magic.
What an impressive young man. Well dressed, well spoken, confident and a true professional. After setting up his equipment (I1Pro & Calman) he took my unit to areas that I could only imagine. Tweeking every little control through the Service Menu, he set about to accomplish perfection. When he finished, we had an absolutely level grey scale and colors (99% color accuracy with the 1% being a slight cyan push) that simply pops off the screen. He worked non-stop for well over 2 hours until he was satisfied, and still had a 2 hour drive to return to his home. That is dedication and a perfectionist.
I noted earlier that I was not a neophyte when it comes to display panels. My business deals with these units every day for varied application, including TV studios which use monitors for background display during newscasts. I have seen what I thought was the best picture attainable but was not prepared for the results that D-Nice obtained for my unit.
This report is long enough already. Let me close by saying that if you are located in the Southeast and have a FPD, you are losing may hours of viewing pleasure by not contracting D-Nice to calibrate your panel. He truly is "The Magic Man".

Yesterday, Bill Hergonson of Coast Calibration (I found Bill via an ISF link in AV Forums) calibrated my set and it has never looked better! The whites really "pop" and the colors are incredible. Thanks to Bill's work, the set is operating at very close to the theoretically perfect 6500k standard at nearly every applicable IRE level.
Bill was prompt, efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. He also took the time to explain the process in detail, answer my questions, as well as share some great "war stories" of his adventures over the years.
I highly recommend Bill for anyone in Southern California who wants to maximize their set's performance!!!!

The results look great! The blacks look so much deeper and darker now, and the colors definitely look more natural after the calibration. My TV had an oversaturation of red out of the box, but now the colors look fantastic. All the images are very sharp.

New report on the repairs I do to the 510/610/710 Pioneer Elite - and non-Elite versions - line from '99-'00, from another very happy owner.
This resoldering of the PS board has been restoring completely stable operations on these sets for years now, from intermittent problems condition to completely reliable operation again.
The PS board gets restored to its original design state, and set back in stone where it shoulda been all along, since the solder job on it had not been done correctly in production before going out of the factory. Which is the impeccable design state where the rest of the boards in there - and there are many - always have been all these years. Just like in all other CRT RPTV brands, which have never had any problems. Each has many boards in there, all of which have to work flawlessly with each other at all times, and which do. On all sets, not just CRT sets. All HDreadys are incredibly complex units, with incredibly complex and ultra high level electronics in them. The fixed pixel Mit DLPs have 8 layer boards!
This weakness of the PS board in this series is just a bump in the road, and relatively inexpensive to fix. The restoration of these boards puts these awesome Pioneer sets with the classic black piano lacquer finish back on the road again, from then on. They just keep going, and going, and going...
Whenever possible, this usually also results in a calibration of the unit, resulting in better than new performance, as these sets are only at cruising age, and are still capable of amazing pictures and flawless HD rendition. Part of this report is the owner's hopping on the bandwagon of my upcoming cal tour, hitting his area soon -

Could you give details/dates of your upcoming Cal tour?
The NE cal tour, for NY, NJ and surrounding areas, is being shifted from the original instigator to one of the participants, because of the original guy being an accountant and this being one of his busiest times of the year. It's still very much happening, tho.
As far as Long Beach goes, I have no plans to be down there right now, but would love to come down, if you want to send me a plane ticket. ALTANertive 01-20-09, 04:32 PM Had my Mitsu 65833 calibrated by Dave at Avical last week and am beyond satisfied. I've already lost hours of sleep from rewatching some of my movies.
I found Dave through the forums and picked him from all the good reviews. It also helped that he's local to me. Came right on time and got to work.
Dave spent a good deal of time calibrating the gray levels, which he said were skewed toward blue. I was previously experiencing a lot of noise, green push, and pink tinted whites. I even tried the DVE Blu Ray version myself. Now all those problems are gone and everything just looks a lot better.
It took a bit of getting used to at first since I was used to settings that looked "good" to me. After spending a bit of time just watching tv or movies, you start noticing things you didn't before.
If it wasn't clear already, I highly recommend Avical for the awesome job they do.

If what you have is CRT tech, I'd recommend getting it tits'd out rather than buying new. You can't get them anymore. They still provide some of the best HD out there, with none of the growing pains a lot of fixed pixel is still going thru.

Zygmunt Wojewoda
Perfect Home Theater
617-965-6984
As a good calibrator for Sony SXRD displays.
I am a video producer and have a large screen Sony XSRD 50" display. I use it regularly to review client material, as the last step in providing solutions. It has been great, but the tone range has never seemed right. I engaged the services of Perfect TV, Mr Zygmunt Wojewoda, a certified calibrator.
He spent over 5 hours calibrating the TV, very deliberately and carefully adjusting all the picture parameters. The result was better than I had hoped.
I have renewed confidence in the set for critical evaluation of both HD and SD image.
I would not hesitate to recommend Zygmunt to perform critical TV calibration.

earwicker7 01-25-09, 03:08 PM These are the results of a "Rescue Calibration" performed by Rayjr on my Sony KDS-R60XBR1. I call it a rescue calibration because the initial calibration was done by a total amateur who advertised himself as a professional. He ran one test with a sensor and a couple of tests by eye and gave me no reports. After posting how unhappy I was with the way I was treated, Rayjr offered to come in and do a real calibration.
These are the results of the original guy's so-called calibration. This is not the report he gave me, as he didn't issue a report (looking at it, I can see why). These are the initial measurements by Rayjr.
131195
Apparently, this is what the first guy considered to be a flat response:eek:.
These are the results after Rayjr's much more thorough (ie, he actually used multiple sensor tests and multiple "by eye" tests) results. They are pretty much night and day.
131196
A big, big thanks to Rayjr. If anyone else in the Los Angeles area is considering a calibration, I would totally recommend him. Unlike the first guy, Rayjr made sure I was involved every step of the way. I mostly watch TV in the dark, so he came at night (the other guy wouldn't work past 5:00pm and said that all of the light leaking into the room from outdoors "Wouldn't make any difference"). If I thought Rayjr might do something better, he'd say "Ok, let's see if your way works, if not, we'll bring it back to my way" instead of "No, that's not going to make any difference... besides, this model doesn't have a service menu anyway."
Kudos!

Zygmunt 01-26-09, 09:21 AM These are the results after Rayjr's much more thorough (ie, he actually used multiple sensor tests and multiple "by eye" tests) results. They are pretty much night and day.

A big, big thanks to Rayjr. If anyone else in the Los Angeles area is considering a calibration, I would totally recommend him. Unlike the first guy, Rayjr made sure I was involved every step of the way..................
Kudos! After looking at your report I see correct grayscale but Gamma is still too low (2.0 or less). Ask him why he didn't correct it. There is also no change in color gamut.
There is gamma correction is service menu. I always set "off" to around 2.5, so medium is around 2.22. You, the user can change between ~2.1 (high) up to 2.5 (off) depends on light condition.
jcjrogers 01-28-09, 10:38 AM I recently had my Panasonic TH-50PZ800u calibrated by Doug Weil of Clearly Resolved Image and Sound. Doug is a very nice guy, who takes his time and is willing to explain every step of the way. He explained various before and after aspects as well as had me look over his shoulder to view what he was doing and see the results on his laptop. In watching everything Doug was doing, I realized that if someone wanted to they could do little or nothing, make up a bunch of crap, and a novice like me would be none the wiser. I felt very comfortable that Doug new what he was doing and that he was working toward specific results. He explained the issue or test at hand, explained how the TV was at that point (pre-calibrated), explained where it needed to be, made the adjustment, and showed me where the TV was after the adjustment.
My TV is in a den, which has an outside wall with windows running down one side of the room. The windows have wooden shudders, but there is no way to get this room very dark during the day. Therefore, Doug gave me what I'll call a "true" calibration for night viewing and a calibration for day viewing, which might not be a totally "true" calibration, but is close and results in a brighter screen. Doug also gave me a "true" calibration for my upscaling DVD player.
Finally, Doug gave me an exceptional calibration report, which included a detailed write-up with explanations. It wasn't just boiler plate stuff, he included things particular to my TV and situation-- things that I remember him touching on when he was here. He also included the user settings for each of my three calibration modes. I highly recommend Doug to anybody wanting to get their TV calibrated.

St_Innocent 02-03-09, 10:40 PM SierraMikeBravo (Shawn) with Sound Advice in Topeka, KS recently calibrated my Panasonic TH50PZ80. The experience was very beneficial as he took the time to explain every step of the process as he went through it. The first problem he was able to solve was a geometry issue where images were bleeding off the screen. It was determined that my settings on the TV were incorrect and these were changed for the best 1:1 pixel mapping. He also discovered that my HDMI 1 input has problems and after we made the above mentioned changes in the TV, we moved the input to HDMI2 and changed the aspect from JUST to FULL and all was fine. Shawn took the time to explain what the objectives were as we entered each step of the calibration. He calibrated two inputs. He produced a detailed report at the end and explained it very well. One of the first things he noted was that the set was over saturated in green when we began. After the cal was completed we viewed reference material, DVE Blu Ray, to make sure all was looking good. The picture looks great. Friends who came over for the Super Bowl could not believe the picture quality. I was very satisfied with Shawn and his level of knowledge, especially the science behind what he was doing and why. I would highly recommend him for calibrations.

mr_melvis 02-10-09, 12:41 PM I just joined the forum (after using it as a source of information on calibrating Plasma TVs), and wanted to drop a short note regarding ChadB and his calibrating abilities.
We purchased our Panny about 1 month ago (replacing a 14 year old Sony CRT), and we were blown away by the difference in what we were seeing. Then I happened to chance upon an item on a website regarding calibrations. I did an investigation and found that ChadB was pretty much in my backyard (distance-wise, Ohio), so we set up an appointment to have ChadB do the calibration work. Well....................He came last night and after 3.5 hours, I was blown away by what he was able to accomplish (HDMI/Component and VGA connections)! The picture was fantastic, flesh tones are incredibly realistic, blacks are not only VERY black, but shadows, etc. are very apparent and defined. I would recommend ChadB to ANYONE who wants this done, he's a real nice guy and very professional about his work. He took the time to explain what he was doing. and was very patient with a computer geek who wanted to know how things are done in his world... I will have him back to do touch ups when needed...
Thanks ChadB!!!

mdelman 02-13-09, 06:37 PM For anyone in the S.F./Northern California area who's looking for a calibrator, I can highly recommend Robert Jones. He recently calibrated and cleaned my six year old Elite PRO-730HD CRT rear-projector. The improvement is really striking -- even my wife and daughter were blown away by the clarity and depth of the picture. I'm very happy I decided not to replace this TV with a flat panel. I own much newer plasma sets by Pioneer (Elite) and Panasonic, as well as a Samsung LCD, and while they have excellent PQ, they can't compete with the CRT RPTV when it comes to black levels and picture clarity. You can find Bob at bob@imageperfection.com or 510-278-4247.

khasrding 02-18-09, 09:03 PM SierraMikeBravo of Sound Advice in Topeka, recently calibrated our new screens used in a professional business setting to display over the air, satellite T.V., and multiple computer inputs. These screens are part of a situational awareness system used 24/7.
Shawn was well prepared for the job and was professional in his appearance and demeanor. He explained what the process was and spent plenty of extra time providing details to me as I'm not the most knowledgeable. I couldn't be at the calibration, but I felt completely at ease letting him work on the system.
Shaw provided both before and after calibration reports in detail for me. The results were, and still are, dramatic. We have 2 screens side-by-side, and after finishing one, the difference was very noticeable. One of my employees commented on the picture quality of the calibrated screen by noting it almost looked 3-dimensional after Shawn was done with it.
After this experience, I'm a firm believer in taking the time to get systems professionally calibrated. I was so happy with the service that I'll be recommending calibration, specifically by Shawn, to my regional headquarters for all of their screens.

Jeremyd5 02-19-09, 08:55 PM I wanted to second all the recommendations for Chad B. I hired Chad to calibrate my Panasonic 800U . I also requested the advance audio calibration as I was unable to position my front speakers and the center channel so it sounded good with my new home theater equipment. Chad arrived on time and did the Panasonic calibration first. I was not expecting a whole lot given the limited settings available in the service menu, but was pleasantly surprised by how improved THX mode was after Chad finished his calibration.
As for the advanced audio, Chad was able to find the sweet spot for the front speakers and corrected the issues I was having with my center channel. He also better integrated my sub with all the speakers and the end results were awesome. Even better, Chad reduced the cost of the advanced audio calibration by $50 since my receiver wasn't capable of doing some of the tests he normally does.
Finally, Chad had noticed the speakers I was using for my secondary system and was asking what I thought of them. When I mentioned that I hadn't had a chance to try them because the tweeter was blown and that I needed to take it to a shop to replace it with the tweeter I received from the company (the speaker are refurbs), Chad replaced the tweeter free of charge!
I can't say enough good things about the quality of service I received today. I will definitely be hiring Chad when I purchase my next HDTV! Thank you so much!

marchewd 02-25-09, 12:37 AM Shawn (Seirra_Mike_Bravo) of Sound Advice from Topeka, KS stopped by this past weekend to calibrate my Panasonic PT-AE3000U front projector. He saw that I was asking some calibration questions about meters and software and said he was going to be down in my neck of the woods. Even though it was a calibration, it more of a learning seminar of using the meter and CalMan. We adjusted the greyscale and gamma. He also showed me how to adjust the CMS for when I get my own meter. The next day he ran Audyssey Pro on my Onkyo 886 processor.
Every step of the way, Shawn explained what he was doing in the software, as well as explaining the real world effects of the front projectors controls; so I had full knowledge of what every thing does and how it interacts with the other controls. He is a stand up guy and the picture looks better and better with each passing day. My wife was amazed at the difference when we watched the Oscars on Sunday night. If you need a calibrator in this part of the country, you can rest easy and give Shawn a call. He will do the job, and do it well.
Thanks again!

after about an hour of watching the dark night and watching kung fu panda, I am stunned on how amazing my tv looks even more now. The pq is unreal. I have never seen anything like this. Eliab worked his majic on my tv and he did not disappoint. He calibrated pure mode, isf day and night. I have only watched in pure mode since he left and I cant keep my eyes off the screen. The sharpness and detail that I can see now is un-describable. Thank you Eliab, you have definitely made me one happy camper.

auburn82 02-26-09, 11:08 PM Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of having Jeff Meier (UMR) in my home to calibrate my PRO-150FD, PRO-151FD and two surround systems. First, I want to thank Jeff for the way he willing to answer questions that I am sure he is asked every day, but he finds a way to answer them in a way that made me feel like it was the first time he had ever been asked. It was a great experience to have him calibrate my equipment and I could not be more pleased with the results. Since he had to do two systems, he was at my house all day. Even my wife has commented on the improvement of both the video and audio today. The picture on both plasmas looks literally like it is 3D. I know now that I have never previously seen a television that has been set up the way it is supposed to be and I also know that I will never own another television that Jeff has not calibrated. As good as the video now is, I believe the audio is just as good. Jeff took my audio that I set up using the
Audyssey in my Denon 4308 and 5308 and he turned it off and set it up his self and my audio is literally 1000% better. He also found several settings in my audio that had my systems unable to perform as they are capable. My sound systems now sound unbelievable. I think the audio change may even be more dramatic than the video and the change in the quality of the video is unbelievable.
I want to again thank Jeff the his professionalism and I want to recommend him to anyone wanting to calibrate their system. I also want to stop anyone from making the mistake of perfecting your video, but ignoring your audio. Let Jeff do both, you will be glad you did and you can thank me later.

sharpness was noted.

mark777b 03-07-09, 07:16 PM I had my Pioneer Elite PRO-111FD calibrated last week by Chad Billheimer. Chad is a very nice guy, very professional and knowleadgeable. The calibration itself took about three hours. He did the ISF-Day and ISF-Night, and answered to each of my (many :) ) questions in detail. He had saved the entire report in a file for me to keep. The new image is breathtaking. The tones of the skin, the shadows/blacks are unbelieveable realistic - it looks like 3D.
This 111FD replaces my (still new) 110FD, and Chad pointed to me that the 110FD had the colors saturated. That TV had been calibrated by a guy from the BB store a year ago, and I could tell he wasn't as savvy as expected. The calibrated picture on the 111FD was much better than the one on the 110FD.
I highly recommend Chad - he is also more affordable comparing to the "competition", and was available quicker than other offers I saw on here, where the wait times were weeks and months.

^^I still stand by all of that and today was simply part 2 of all of that except thankfully for Chad's sake...a LOT less than the 8 hour marathon that happened there!
No magnets or geometry issues this time!
Chad is a great person and knows his profession inside and out. He's a pleasure to deal with and extremely generous with his time. He makes it all look easy. ;)
He's a patient and methodical perfectionist and that's exactly what you need for work like this. He double even triple checks is own work and he even takes the time to check all of your sources to see how they interact with each other and if any settings need fine tuning.
This was my second TV done by Chad and some day down the road there will be a third, although I intend to keep this Pioneer for a long time.
He's a great professional and he's a great person that I'm pleased to call my friend. :)
I've referred friends and neighbors over the years and I've made a point to plug him around here and on other forums whenever I get a chance and I'm all too happy to do so again now. :)
I really didn't think the Pioneers could really be improved upon all that much. I was wrong. I had a few nits that I couldn't quite get right like wanting a little bit more oomph to my white levels and a few other things.
That's ALL fixed now and then some!
I'm here to tell other Kuro owners: Yes, getting an ISF calibration is worth it and something you want to do and if you're within his reach, I can't recommend Chad strongly enough. :)

Robert George 03-10-09, 02:51 PM I posted this in the Pioneer PRO-FPJ1 thread....
A few words about calibration...
Supposedly, this projector (and the RS2) are near D6500 "out of the box". Or so it has been reported. I can attest to the fact that the PRO-FPJ1 does indeed throw a very nice looking image with only the slightest tweaking of the user settings. However, the grayscale is nowhere near accurate in factory settings.
Greg Loewen of Lion AV was in town yesterday and we put "the machine" on my two week old FPJ1 to see how it was. It needed some work, and frankly, I was a bit surprised how far off it was. I thought it looked pretty good already. I was pleased to find the projector was not terribly difficult to calibrate. Greg was able to get the color balance in line with considerably less effort than was required on my previous two Sony SXRD models. Obviously Sony is doing more (harm) with their image processing, and the dynamic iris also complicates a proper grayscale calibration on those models as well. The Pioneer/JVC is much better behaved.
Post calibration results are a rather warmer color palette with noticeably improved reproduction of even the subtlest variations of colors. Light output was reduced by less than two foot lamberts so the PJ is still plenty bright and black level is even better. A great projector made even better.
I will add here that Greg also touched up my Mitsubishi WD-65831 which now has two years on the lamp. It was drifting toward green and Greg got that looking right again. I hope the lamp doesn't blow next week ;-).

I had my Pioneer PDP-5010 ISF calibrated last week by Mark Kaye. I live in Ottawa, Canada and have found it difficult to find ISF calibrators here. Mark operates in the Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec region. He was extremely knowledgeable in every aspect of his job. He was very pleasant and explained everything he was doing. He spent more than 4 hours at my home. His equipment was high quality and the results were very accurate. It was worth every cent!:)
It is absolutely amazing the difference calibration makes with Blu-ray movies and my HD Cable box. The colours look very natural and detail in dark scenes like in Batman and Hellboy II are astounding. The Kuro’s black levels are amazing out of the box, but wait till you see what it looks like dialed in. All I can say is WOW!!:D
I had used D-Nices offsets and was very pleased with the results, but I knew that they weren’t perfect because every TV that comes out of the factory is different. No two TV’s are the same. Some one in this thread said that to buy a very expensive TV and then not spend the few hundred dollars to get it calibrated properly just doesn’t make sense. I couldn’t agree more. All you tweekers out there... you won’t be satisfied till you get it set up professionally.;) I spent the better part of a year messing around in the service menu and the user menu trying to get it right. Well I’m finally satisfied now. If I added up the cost of test pattern disc’s and all my labour, it would be much more than the cost of calibration. I’m now going to sit back and enjoy my movies all over again.
Oh, by the way the attached pre/post Colorfacts file is done in Movie Mode. This is Mark’s webpage for services offered. www.avfusion.ca (www.avfusion.ca)
Thanks Mark, D-Nice and htwaits. You guys provide an invaluable service.

BASICEO 03-24-09, 08:02 AM OK, guy. Here is the Calibration Report on the KRP-500M.
I, again, had the pleasure of having D-NICE visit on Saturday, March 21, 2009 to calibrate my new KRP-500M panel. The panel had approximately 125 hours of break-in prior to his arrival and we both deemed it ready to calibrate. Out of the box, which I agree is flimsy, the panel was flawless with no signs of glass panel breakage or even a scar. Not as clean on the bezel as I would have liked, but flawless, just the same.
Once D-NICE set up his equipment, we were astounded at the black-levels of the unit to the eye. Nearly Dead A** Perfect. D-NICE started the calibration and set back and continued to say "WOW" as to what we both were seeing. Once completed, we both were astounded at the reports we were getting back.
I have not placed the unit into service as yet because I'm not sure what I am going to do with it. The only thing I can say is that this panel is equal to any Elite I have ever seen and is the best "bang for the buck" on the market today. If you can get your hands on one, buy it TODAY.
D-NICE was, as always, the consumate professional and an absolute joy to work with. Thank You, D-NICE. I couldn't recommend you and your services more highly.

Fantastic results! I am hoping my 600M will produce similar results. Would you mind sharing your tv settings with us. If not, I understand. There are no 600Ms calibrated yet, so I am just trying different settings out, and figured I could try yours too while I'm at it :) . Or if this thread would get cluttered, maybe you could put them in the official KRP thread here:

ndisgii,
Sorry, guy. My unit is now repacked and sitting in the warehouse awaiting my decision either to replace my beloved 5020 with it or what. I did not write the setting down prior to repacking.

jerastan 04-01-09, 11:07 PM Having used Doug's service in the past with a Mitsu DLP, I knew I had to have him back for my two new Pioneer sets. As before, Doug was very professional and timely and these are two qualities that I find very important. I was a little unsure that the picture quality could get much better but being the elitist prick that I am, I had to see for myself. Doug did not disappoint. Both the Pro-111FD and PRO-151FD now blow my socks off every time I start them up. To my surprise the wife even gave his work many compliments. Now that's an accomplishment. I can honestly say, Doug's work is well worth the fee he charges, if not more, and I would recommend him to anyone.
Thanks Doug!

Trust Me, I am. These sets are flat out amazing once calibrated. The thing is, I actually thought my old Mitsu Diamond DLP had a great picture. Ahhh, ignorance is bliss.
I'm here to tell other Kuro owners: Yes, getting an ISF calibration is worth it and something you want to do
Placebo effect? Some calibrator sits down with tools for hours and the end result will always=way better. That's jsut the way it is when you are paying hundreds. Just realize your 111 conformed to standards right out the box in pure mode. Sure a slight tweak, removing a little red or green push in the grayscale can make a 5% difference. I could of told you to raise red and drop green a little to remove some green push or the opposite if red in the grayscale. Sorry i just can't help myself here.
right.... keep telling yourself that. having recorded material and viewed in many different modes, including pure, isf day, isf night, etc... i can hands down see a big difference. being right there w/ the calibrator was nice because i could see that neither of the sets conformed w/ standards out of the box. Guess what - Afterwards, they were where they needed to be. Crazy huh?
Color accuracy the elites DO conform to standards right out the box. Read some professional reviews. Sure you can drop contrast a little to get spot on d65. Or tweak rgb highs for that 5% improvement in the grayscale, or tweak them cms controls, good luck calibrators. Still, if your color is at zero or heaven forbid +color, you are guranteed oversaturated for 95+% of content you watch. I will bet anything your color is at 0 or +1234 :(
tell me how to check it w/out Control Cal and i'll tell you.
True, don't worry though, guaranteed at 0 or +.

I had my Pioneer Elite PRO-1150 calibrated by Robert Busch of Busch Home Theater in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA a couple of weeks ago. I bought the Pioneer Elite 111 in the hopes of selling the 1150 but I was unable to so the 111 went back to BB. This is why I decided to calibrate the 1150.
Robert confirmed the scheduled date a couple of days ahead of time which my wife and I thought was very professional. The first thing Robert did was to check my PS3 and Receiver settings since I am using Blu Ray only for the Pioneer. I am glad that he did since there were some settings that were wrong.
Robert is a very nice guy, very professional, and has the most amazing equipment. The Konica/Minolta camera of his really impressed me and he took the time to show me how far off the Pioneer potential was. My settings were at 60% of the sets potential which really surprised me. The calibration itself took about four hours due to our chats.
The new image is absolutely breathtaking and even my wife notices the differences. For her to notice any change on a TV is the highest compliment that can be paid I can assure you. To me it is like a new set.
I am also one of those guys that felt to just set it and forget it but after seeing what Robert has done here I am now a firm believer. Professional Calibration is worth every penny. Robert explained to me that the set should be checked every two years. If calibration is taken into that context then it is a small cost per day.
I would hire Robert again in two years to check the present settings since he has transformed my Pioneer.
Robert Busch is highly recommended by me and he has a special until May.
Check him out at buschhometheater.com

BluDevil 04-14-09, 09:07 AM Chad is the Man. Chad Billheimer, a professional who I consider myself lucky to have found has been an incredible help. He did a Panasonic Pro 8UK plasma three years ago that is still going strong. Recently he did a Pioneer Kuro 6010 and made it just about perfect to my eyes. But then, as he was finishing up with it I said that I did not think that a picture could get much better than my set-up. He thought about it and politely said that, for him, CRT projection was king. Well we kept in touch and when I recently bought a new house (with a dedicated basement for a projector), I asked him to coordinate a system within a tight budget. Obviously the projector would be used and also we had to find a screen and Lumagen processor to bring out the full capebilities of CRT. The Screen we chose was a Carada Brilliant White 110" 16/9 (new). By checking online sources, Chad found a deal on an HDQ and then got ahold of an Electrohome 8500 via Govt. auction. He then suggested that I buy his G70 Sony due to space constraints in his theatre room. All this sounded complicated to me, and I never would have done it were it not for the fact that I trust him so much. After all was said and done, all I can say is that the mighty Chad was right on. The picture is amazing. It took many hours and 2 seperate trips, I needed to paint the room Black to achieve the full effect, but all is now in place and doing fine. The blue and green tubes are almost new, 250 hours or so and the red is about 1000. Fade to black is something you must experience first hand. The blacks are so deep and the picture so detailed from Blu-Rays like Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale, that it simply goes beyond video to actual theatre. Yes at this size light output is at the edge of it's capacity, but it doesen't seem to be a problem on most of the material I have tried. Chad is someone who has spent countless hours working for me, answering his phone and always being honest about what was possible on my budget. In the end, if it haden't been for him, the jaw-droping pictures that I am seeing would not have been attainable. Find Chad, and get him to either calibrate your display or maybe, if you are wondering what the state-of-the-art looks like, and you can dedicate a room to it, he can assemble a CRT based system for you that will be beyond what current LCD LCos or DLP can offer, and do it for less than 60" Plasma, maybe way less. I don't mean to sound like a commercial, but he is that good.
htwaits 04-14-09, 02:18 PM Chad is the Man. Chad Billheimer, a professional who I consider myself lucky to have found has been an incredible help.I've included two links to your reports about the new dedicated theater in your new basement. Enjoy. :)
BarryB1124 04-19-09, 07:13 AM Eliab was here yesterday to calibrate the Pioneer 111-FD. Great work and a really cool guy. We shot the breeze as he did his thing and it was enjoyable. It looks fantastic. D-Nice's settings were pretty close, just a little too green...and it is important to note that I did not do the strict 150 hour break-in without TV watching.
As for the actual calibration, the depth and clarity are most easily recognizable. The TV was already terrific, this just takes it up a few notches...which is pretty amazing. Also, now I have true white on all-white backgrounds. Before there was a beige cast. Not anymore. It's the type of thing that is worth the money if you want the most accurate picture out of your TV. You can more easily differentiate slight differences in black, see more detail...it's all there. If you are on the fence just do it.
I also want to give a shout to Chad B. He calibrated my Sony A3000 and we were just having some difficulty coordinating a time for him to do the 111. He is based in Ohio and I am in NY. No matter what, when you go with one of the experts such as Eliab, Chad or others, you know what you are getting. They're not only great at their work but also good, honest people. A nice feature as far as I am concerned when we're talking about letting a stranger into your home...even one as messy as mine. :D
A week ago I had my CRT RPTV (Pioneer SD533HD5) calibrated by Gregg Loewen of Lion AV. Gregg arrived on time, and got right to work. Unfortunately, due to the age of my set, it didn't want to come apart. Gregg had to work a little harder than usual, but managed to remove the screen. Next came a cleaning of the optics, and a partial lining of the cabinet. After a restacking of the screen and focusing, the TV was put back together.
Out came the laptop and signal generators, and the gray scale/color adjustments were made. This was followed by convergence adjustments. A little fine tuning of my blu ray player (Pioneer BD51) and my laser disc player (Pioneer Elite CLD99/yeah, I still have one of these), and the calibration was complete. We next viewed some material on blu ray, with Gregg pointing out some changes from the calibration (increased detail, proper black levels, correct color, etc..) During the whole process, Gregg would let me know what he as doing, and answered any questions I had. He's a very friendly, nice guy. My three year old daughter really enjoyed talking with him!
Results. The TV looks great. The colors really pop, and the picture has much more detail. The screen restack got rid of the glare, and improved the picture depth. The set has a definite film-like quality to it. I highly recommend Gregg to calibrate any set, old or new.

I hope he removed each lens and cleaned underneath it as well, both on the lens rear and the CRT coolant cover of each gun. If not, half the job is still not done, on restoring a crystal clear light path.
6 additional surfaces get cleaned that way, and at your set's age, and being a Pioneer with the air gap those sets all had of that brand, the "deeper optics" cleaning is absolutely essential. There are 10 surfaces that need it on your set at its current age. If only the mirror and lens tops were done, that's only 4. As such the majority of the clarity your set is truly capable of, is still ahead.
I am sure Gregg did that, as he is a consumate professional. But not all calibrators are as rabid on optics cleaning as I am. So I just thought I'd put that out there so you can doublecheck it JIC, I have not chatted with him about it for awhile...
;)
Mr Bob
PS - half the units of your model had the same PS board as the x10 series - or in your case the 532 series - and cold solder joints on those boards have been letting go left and right because of a poor soldering job done on them at the factory. Years later those weak joints are starting to let go, and we never know which ones will let go first.
If you have noticed any intermittent spurious events like blue flashes, abrupt brightness fluctuations or even shutdowns, unplug your set immediately and contact me. If caught early we can alway save these sets when this stuff comes up. If the owner doesn't take swift action and things get worse - then not so much...
Hey Mr Bob!
Gregg removed each lens and cleaned all surfaces. I'd say he's also rabid on optics cleaning!
The only problem I've had so far with the set was the ICs. I'll keep an eye out for those other bad events.
I'm an avid reader of the 'Don't Dump your CRT" thread. It actually convinced me to hold on to the TV, not buy a new one, and just get it calibrated.
Awesome! On all counts.
Go Gregg! -
b
PS - if your PS bd is mounted on the floor of your set you won't have to worry about those cold solder joints cropping up.
Only the sets of your series where the PS bd was vertically mounted to the bulkhead of your set use the same board as their year before's model, which had all the problems. If you follow the power cord, it leads straight to the PS bd. If you look in from the back, the ventilation holes might allow you to see what's going on in there without removing the back.
