View Full Version : Make Your Own "FOX" Style Theater Logo
I am not so sure about this new file. It forces black bars into the render even when you are in true 16x9 mode. Is that what people really want?
Hi there, did you manage to get rid of the black bars? I cannot seem to work out how to do it?:(
Any help would be appreciated :)
TheSkinsFan 08-26-09, 09:22 AM Hi TheSkinsFan - thanks for your response :)
I think I am using the original FOX_Logo_by_Matt_Hoecker.blend file at 600 x 600. Sorry I don't have a screen shot but you can see a think black bar either side of the animation which is worst when your viewing the intro at full screen. There was some vague steps to remove the bars but I couldn't do it :(
Could you send me or point me where I could find the fixed blend file pls?
I'm guessing that it's your resolution. It looks like you rendered a perfect square. :) Is your display a widescreen display, or is it the old standard 4:3 ratio?
If it's 4:3, then change the resolution to 1024 x 768 for HD animation, 640 x 480 for a SD animation, or any other 4:3 ratio.
If it's a widescreen display, try 1280 x 720 for a 720p animation, 720x480 for 480p animation, or any other 16:9 ratio.
Here's a good list of resolutions and ratios:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_resolutions
For a blend file with less flickering, download the FOX_Logo_by_Matt_Hoecker-flickerfixed.blend file found here:
http://www.filestube.com/36fedff38c27bec103e9,g/FOX-Logo-by-Matt-Hoecker-flickerfixed-blend.html
(don't worry about downloading the second file listed there)
Good luck!

My laptop is a widescreen display and I will try re rendering on the resolutions as per your advise.
I think this may not be the problem. Because this was highlighted very early in post 19, and then the originator posted a response in post 23 (first page) where the originator admited inserting these black bars. He also descrbled how to remove them by going into cam mode and deleting them.
Any ideas here ??
Thank you for the link :) - I have downloaded the first one although I didnt see any flickering issues with the blend I used. Just these bloody bars...
Upon loading this new blend file i notice it has changed the options/settings on the Blender application

Is your laptop the device you plan to watch the movies on, or will you be outputting them to another display? It's the resolution of the actual display (TV, projector, external monitor) that you need to consider when you pick a resolution to render the animation.
Trust me, your original 600x600 render would have had black space on either side of the animation regardless of the screen you play it on... you rendered a perfect square (600x600) instead of a standard display resolution!
What settings changed in blender with the new file?
rflores2323 08-26-09, 03:36 PM I have tried the disney 2d and 3d and also the universal intros. I have sucessfully put my custom name on all of them and have made an animation of them to an avi raw format. The problem that I am getting is that the video looks very jittering when playback. I followed the steps and hit animation which made the video in about an hour (which doesnt seem right as I have read it takes hours and hours to render).
Do I need to render the files first (how do I do that) and then hit animation? I have it set to 1280 x 720 to avi raw output. Thanks
using blender 2.49a

Hi, sorry for delay in replying was away for work
Ok, I re-rendered it at the default 720x (cant remember), got the same result. I plan to use it on 42" plasma screens as my DJ intro.... Did you check out the posts I mentioned ref the black bars?
Still confused an not happy as it's not right
Should I try another, say higher res??

Hi there.. Sorry I am not sure as I am only a newbie at this an trying to get my first one right :o But what I would like is to try the Disney and Universal ones too... are there blend files for these too? If so can you post a link, please?? :)

You're going to have to help me help you by remembering EXACTLY what you set for the resolution. "Default 720x" doesn't mean anything, so I have no idea what you did.
The settings for 720p render should look like this:
http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu179/TheSkinsFan/BlenderSettings1.jpg
You can also change "AVI RAW" to "JPEG" if you wish to reassemble the 600 individual jpegs later.
Is that what your settings looked like when you tried it last?

I hear what your saying, my fault I should have noted it. :o Sorry but also once again thank you for responding.
Ok, when I rendered it the settings almost looked the same apart from the SizeX: was the 720 and the SizeY the default value at that resolution. Know what I mean..
When I render I always set it to JPEG, which is ok and as you mention creates 600 stills. The tricky part I am finding is then to reduce the 50min clip down to 20 or 22 seconds in movie maker. If you set it to AVI, is this automatically at the right speed? Or do you still need to cut it down to 20/22sec?
Sorry if this sounds dumb, I am really just started doing this kinda of editing but really enjoy it

You don't sound dumb at all bro. You just weren't being very specific before, so it was tough to help ya. Try it with the resolution settings EXACTLY as you see above. If you choose "RAW AVI," the video will be the right length, but it will also be one huge file, so you'll need to compress it with the codec of your choice. If you use JPEGS, just do what you did before to get it to ~20 seconds.
(I used VirtualDubMod to compress mine and combine it with audio streams)
With 1280x720 as the resolution, you shouldn't get black bars on the side of your display.
In2Photos 09-01-09, 09:06 AM I rendered my logo a few weeks ago (before vacation) and when I took a look at it last night it is around 3.5GB, and I can't get it to play. I used the HD settings (so 1920 x 1080) and it took all night to render an AVI RAW (I have an i7 rig that was pegged at 100% on all 8 cores). Is there something wrong with the render? Is there something else I needed to do? I haven't attempted to add the music yet since I'm not sure the video part even works.
tlogan6797 09-01-09, 09:28 AM VIRTUALDub...THAT'S IT'S!

Go back through the thread and see if you can find one of the tutorials. The RAW AVI will look like crap until you run it through something like VirtualDub (which was free when I got mine), then mux in the audio and then burn it to DVD (.vob file). Then it plays fine. I've never tried rendering jpgs, so I don't know what tools to use for those.

I'll try the tutorials again. Ugh!
I can't even get the AVI to play at all, much less look like crap. I'll look into Virtual Dub as well.

VirtualDubMod here:
http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/
It's free, and I used it successfully to compress both the JPEG and AVI RAW versions of my intro, then mux in the AC3 or DTS 5.1 Audio I found links for somewhere in this thread. (I made one version with each type of audio just in case I later prefer one vs. the other).
To add audio track, click on:
Streams -> Stream List -> (Select audio file -- I used "Fox.Ac3" or "Fox.dts" I found somewhere in this thread)
You can then click:
File -> Save As -> (Type in new compressed video filename, make sure "Full Processing Mode" is selected below, and then click "Change" to switch the compression to something like "ffdshow Video Codec." Be sure to set the H264 bitrate in ffdshow to 10000 for best results!)
If you don't have ffdshow installed, choose whatever H264 compressed codec you prefer.
Once it's compressed -- which takes roughly 1 to 2 minutes -- it should be well under 50MB in size, so you won't need to burn it to get it to play in any media player.
I use MediaPortal, which under the advanced settings allows you to simply put in the path to the intro video, and it now plays before every movie. :)

Thanx dude,:D - Kool I will try as per your advise and also try the "RAW AVI" method. By the way is VirtualDubMod freeware?
With a res of 1280x720 roughly how long will it take for rendering? The 720xXXX took 5hrs. So figuring this will take alot more? Man if them bars disappear, I will have to buy you a beer bro

Thanks for the info. I'll check again as to why my render seems messed up. Maybe Virtual Dub will solve my issue.

OK, tried this again last night and this morning.
First, I tried using my render from a few weeks ago. When I open the file in VirtualDubMod it takes quite a while to open and has an Index error and applies Aggressive Mode (whatever that means). Once it opens I see my render, well it appears only one frame of it. I can't get anything other than one frame to show up. If I add the music and then do the Save As thing I get a 14kB file!
So, I reran the render last night before going to bed. Same exact thing this morning, although the file took less time to open in VDMod this time. Same thing when I output the file, 14kB.
Anyone have any ideas what is happening? Maybe someone can send me a blend file, perhaps mine is screwed up or something. Just to be clear I am trying to render a full HD 1920 x 1080 30fps AVI RAW of 650 frames. It takes my i7 PC about 40-60 seconds per frame so about 9 hours or so. I see all 650 frames have been rendered in the Command window. I get a ~4GB file after the render in c:/render, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I need to try a lower resolution?
tlogan6797 09-02-09, 09:04 AM It was probably two years ago since I did a full render, but I seem to have a vague recollection of needing to delete the old render or make sure to save the new one under a new name to avoid some problems. I guess it's worth a try at this point for you.

OK, the new one didn't work either. :(
I don't get it, the render seems to go smoothly. But when opened in VDMod it looks like there is only 2 frames (and that is after it has to rebuild the index for some reason).
The 20th Fox intro is great, still not had a chance to re do mine. But has anyone done any outro's??

I too am using Media Portal. I saw mention about using the intro before so I can't wait to try it!
You'll need the Moving Pictures plugin to get the intros to play before every movie in MediaPortal. If you already have that plugin, go to the far right tab in the MovingPictures config, Click "Advanced", scroll all the way to the bottom of the advanced settings, and type in the full path to your intro in the very last option (I store my intro video at C:\intro.avi to keep it simple).
Also, it's not that your original file was "messed up," it's just that most systems don't like the huge avi files -- once the same file is compressed, it'll play in any compatible player just fine, and it will still look great in all its HD glory! :)
EDIT: ackk, it does sound like your raw avi is getting messed up. try the jpeg output instead (which happens to be the method that finally worked for me, and it was nice because I could render 300 frames, pause it, and then do the other 300 frames later :))

1. Why 650 frames? Mine was set to 600.
2. Try setting the output to "JPEG" --> You then only need to open the very first frame.jpg in VirtualDub, it will add the rest automagically.
3. It shouldn't take any time at all to load in Vdub, even using the AVI RAW. If it does, something else is wrong.
If the jpeg method doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to keep coming up with ideas. ;)
Opps sorry, shout out to you TheSkinsMan!
lol. thanks man. I'll keep trying to help as much as I can, but you guys need to remember one thing: I -JUST- learned this entire process two weeks ago myself, and it took me several days and many renders to finally get mine right. Therefore, my help can only go so far before we'll have to find a real expert.
The good news is that I did encounter many of the same problems you guys are having, so I'll do my best to pass on those lessons learned.

After the last AVI didn't work I decided to try JPEG. I ran it last night and just used VDMOD to create the new AVI. So far so good, I should have done this first!
As to the 650 frames, the blend file that I downloaded was already 650 frames, I guess to extend long enough to match up with the music. I just finished running VDMOD and IT WORKED! FINALLY! :D I have some flickering, but for now at least I have something!
Thanks for all your help guys! :)

LOL.... I am looking for something that I can use to end my video shows. Very similar to a couple i've seen at the end of some films. I think something like the Orion Classics/Artisan Entertainment Outro or something simple that would do.
I could even use another intro as an outro.. but dont know where to get any other blend files similar to the 20th Fox one from.... Any ideas bro??

Excellent! Well done. I hope you enjoy it!
As for the flickering, I still have a little bit as well. I figure "it's good enough for now."
It's almost like temporary screen or speaker placement only to get sucked into watching a whole movie because it sounds so damn good -- "I'll just hang the speakers later..." LOL!

I really have none... after all, if the films have an outro, it gets kinda redundant (it's already bad enough when the film has the 20th Century fox intro right after my own custom 20th Century Fox intro! lol)
Are you planning to hardcode it into your videos? If so, maybe one of the THX intro videos would be cool as an outro...?
My next plan is to combine my custom intro with a THX intro. I always love hearing the loud 5.1 surround go to work in the THX intros, and it helps set the mood for the movie. After that, I think I'll throw in some trivia slides and "Turn off your damn cellphone" messages at the very beginning. The possibilities are endless... :)
tlogan6797 09-04-09, 08:56 AM NOoooooooo....not the flickering!
I just pretend it's the paparazzi taking pictures.
REALLY glad you got it to work.

LOL.. No I, to give you a little insight of wat I do. I am a DJ mainly cater for the indian wedding market. Now have started doing video shows at only for high profile weddings, so kinda like a VJ now. Having the 20th Fox for the intro is great. But then I thought to end the show/dancing, it be nice to have a kinda closing statement. Know what I mean??
I checked out the THX intro..all I can say is it's WICKED..:D It would be so kool if that was possible.. I could so use that too. Is there a blend file for that around? Or anything like that?
I think for the outro thing I might just put together some basic ending credits like in the movies.

Well, my intro still has issues. :( It sounds great, but the video has tons of flickering and it stalls in two spots for a couple seconds each.
Anyone want to provide me with a new blend file? One that seems to work really well. I plan on converting to jpeg and using VDMod to make the AVI file.
Thanks!
TheSkinsFan 09-10-09, 10:58 AM Well, my intro still has issues. :( It sounds great, but the video has tons of flickering and it stalls in two spots for a couple seconds each.

Have you tried the JPEG method with your existing blend file? Do a search for the following blend file -- it still has some flickering, but it's the best I found:
FOX_Logo_by_Matt_Hoecker-flickerfixed.blend
The final result should fall between 20MB and 50MB in size. Anything larger than that and you're doing something wrong or skipping a step.
Good luck!

The JPEG method is the only one that worked for me. But the video seems terrible. It has tons of flickering and stalls twice. The final AVI is around 30MB IIRC.
I'll search for the one you mention, thanks!
You can get it from the projects page in my signature below.

Yes, I found your site and downloaded all of them! :D Thanks!
Dradius 09-11-09, 08:54 AM to fix the flickering, I think you have to edit the file using the old version of blender, then render in the new version. or vice versa. it's in this thread somewhere.
mccorkled 12-04-09, 12:16 AM this is great. I consider myself pretty computer savvy and got the hang of this right away! Ive messed with blender before but never really made anything...
tweeking on the other hand can teach me a LOT.

Its rendering right along fast! I finally can utilize some of my quad core that just been sitting in the case :P
I realize this thread is 2 months dormant but I think it deserves a bump. Thanks to the OP for making this tut.
I am having 1 problem if someone can help me...
After 10 hours of rendering to make an animation, its not working right. Its all goes well until the front spot lite starts to blink and mess with the lighting on the text. It looks like the light almost disappears and then comes back.
Black Banshee 12-21-09, 02:02 PM What's the simplest way to get the .dts or AC3 audio on my demo? I have generated my AVI file and am happy with it, but the only way I've been able to get audio added is via the Vista Moviemaker method with the WAV file, except it will only generate sound out of the center channel. I want surround sound. Have tried to get other programs like virtualdub to import the audio, but it always says unsupported file type. Have installed every codec I can find and it still won't recognize it? Was hoping someone might point me to another method I might be missing?
kelemvor 01-29-10, 02:22 PM Has the issue with the Disney 3D one been addressed where the sparkly thing doesn't follow the arc all the way across? I couldn't find a blender file that had this fixed.
If anyone has one, please let me know.
Thanks.

guamguam 02-10-10, 07:21 AM Has anybody try to play this on an Oppo BD player? I made an intro for a friend by rendering the jpegs, then I converted to mkv. I took the mkv and converted to vob for the ps3 using mkv2vob. The vob plays fine on his ps3, but the mkv is choppy on the oppo. It is rendered in 1080p. I don't have an oppo, so I can't test it myself. Any ideas?
Will the PS3 play WMVHD?? You could use Windows Movie Maker to create one of those.

You didn't click the button to output a "raw avi", that complicates things a bit. Although it can be done from what I've heard.
sandygarland 03-14-10, 06:35 PM I am having trouble finding the Fox logo, download. Can you help me. ;)
mark_anderson_u 03-16-10, 08:21 PM Hi All
I successfully created my custom FOX trailer. Now I want to to add it to all my movies. The current version is 852x480 and is 200MB. I'm going to make a HD version at the weekend.
I'm using WM7 and MediaBrowser. It works great if I put it in the movie folder (name begins with "0" so it always plays first). I have about 250 movies, so just copying this version to each folder will take up 50GB. The HD one will take tons more. I tried adding a shortcut to the trailer to another folder, but it doesn't play.
Any ideas how I can link to a single copy instead of having to have hundreds of copies?
Regards
Mark

You can create .asx playlist in each folder. Here is a link to the MediaBrowser forum that allows you to have random intros before the movies.

mark_anderson_u 03-18-10, 07:45 PM I don't know why, but on my first attempt, I'm getting serious stutter and video freeze starting at about 6 seconds in when I try to play the avi in VLC. It does it at different points in the video each time I play it --sometimes starting sooner, somtimes later.
It does the same thing with or without sound muxed in, so that ain't it.
Res: 1280x720
Output: AVI RAW, 30fps, 600 frames
any ideas?
I'm going to try it again tonight, but this is very frustrating. :(
I have exactly same issue. Anyone got a silution?

Use something other than VLC as a test.

Toxic69 03-25-10, 11:12 AM hey peeps i already have my 1080p rendering completed (it took about 24hrs ) but now i'm having a hard time finding a true 5.1 Dolby Digital file of the 20th century fox fanfare.
does anyone have it please share...
colecrew 03-28-10, 10:12 AM I have a custom fox logo that is called by a playlist. I get the intro and movie to play no problem. My problem is that Media Browser does not show the movie information such as 720, Divx, etc. on the movies that have the playlist associated. Has anyone found a way to fix this?

You might want to ask that in the Media Browser forum or the Media Browser Community Tracker.
SFORCES 04-26-10, 08:31 AM Were might i get the fox logo to try this myself?
premiertrussman 04-27-10, 10:42 AM Sorry if this problem has been solved already, I haven't read through the entire thread yet, but Has anyone else had problems with their logo flickering during the video? I didnt even notice it the first time i played it back, but the stand that the lettering sits on flickers really badly...was the format i rendered it in or something else?
Thanks
markf1967 05-06-10, 05:48 AM The file provided by kaos (back on page 12 or so, I think) was flicker free when I ran it. I did add a low powered lamp to the right foreground (so as to fill in the silhouettes from the foreground buildings) and I upped the OSA setting to 11 (so as to smooth out some of the jagged edges in the various platforms on which the words sit). Be warned, increasing the OSA will kill the rendering rate. I also went up to 800 frames, just because it's a beautiful image to behold!
Thanks everbody. :)
premiertrussman 05-06-10, 08:23 AM Thank you!
alougher 05-15-10, 11:07 AM Couple of questions:
1. How do you open/convert an "AVI RAW" file on a Mac?
2. Where is the DTS or DD5.1 audio for the fox logo? All the links in this thread to the audio are dead.
Cheers.
neaner72 05-15-10, 11:48 PM Thanks Blazer! Had fun with it!

Do you mean the splash screen when MP is loading or when a movie starts having this play before the movie? You can do both actually. You can create a JPG of the first frame and use that for the splash screen, and once you create the movie you use it as a custom intro.

I have the movie created. I would just like to have the movie play I suppose when I start a movie. Or if I can have both that would be cool as well.

Go into MP editor and click on Plugins. Then click on Moving Pictures and click Config. When it opens go into the advanced settings. There is a place for custom intro. Change the filename to the location of your intro. It will now play before every movie.
For the splash screen you'll need to refer to the MP forum as I haven't changed mine. I remember reading about it before and it did not seem difficult to do though.
ImDrSpock 01-10-11, 10:08 PM I know this is old, but if anyone has the .blend files of the Star Trek Universal logo and the Death Star logo with the ships flying around it, would you please send it to me? PM me for my e-mail. Thanks in advance.
marlon1925 03-27-11, 02:39 AM anyone has the link of the DTS/Dolby 5.1 audio file? please? i've rendered mine....will be making the video as soon as I got the audio file.

Jay5298 03-28-11, 10:16 AM I know this thread is old, but I have been trying to render a 1920x1080 fox logo and it doesn't seeem to work. I already have a 1280x720 version that plays fine but when I try and render a HD or 1920x1080 version it wont play. The folder or icon appears on my computer but it wont play. It shows 3.47gb of data but doesn't appear the same as the 720 file? Any suggestions?
Thanks
marlon1925 03-29-11, 12:10 AM well i have tried rendering it at 1290x1080 and it went all well....but what i did was i manually entered all jpeg files to picasa and made a movie from there.
then added the dts file using the mkvmerge :)
PTAaron 04-02-11, 05:15 PM Has anyone figured out the "best" method for using this on a PS3? I saw the question has been asked a few times over the years, but I didn't see a real concrete answer...
I have my intro rendering as we speak - for the second time around... I goofed and made it into 600 jpeg images the first time around, and couldn't remember what program was recommended to "stitch" them into a movie (didn't have time to scan back through 20 pages that I already read...).
Anyway - has anyone found a simple way to integrate this into the movie watching experience on a PS3?
EDIT: I know how to get them on the PS3 and make them play... I'm just wondering if anyone has found a way to create some sort of smooth transition between the intro and the movie..
Would also be interested..
PTAaron 04-05-11, 12:28 PM Here is the plan I have come up with - I'll try it out tonight and see how it works... It will require some setup, but I think that it will have the right effect for when I have people over to watch a movie:
Step 1: Burn some intro clips and the intro logo to a CD.
Step 2: Set up Harmony 1100 remote to have an activity called "Watch Movie with Intro" - set it to turn on DVD player, tv, AVR, and PS3 - add buttons to: switch AVR input to the "PS3" input; control the DVD player; and control DVD player power.
Step 3: Run the activity and get things started before guests arrive - preferably while the popcorn is popping and they are getting drinks at the bar. Start the movie on PS3 and pause it at the start of movie, switch AVR to the input for the DVD player.
Step 4: People come in for the movie - start up the DVD player to play the intro sequences - at the end hit the button to switch to the PS3/play PS3/power down DVD.
I can't really come up with another method that would work as relatively smooth as that method... playing them off the PS3 hard drive is fine - but when you go to play the Blu-Ray it still has to load and go through the menus, so it isn't nearly as smooth.
I agree; two separate players are likely necessary (with the BR movie "booted up" and standing by in pause mode)
eagleayaz19 05-26-11, 11:15 PM When I finish rendering, I find the letter 't' flickering throughout the movie, in case I use 't' in any text. It happens only with 't'. Help please...

I have most of the blender projects hosted at http://woodyfamilycinema.com/?page_id=12
Kagey123 06-16-11, 05:24 AM Much appreciated W84No1. It is rendering now and has been for days. Its looking V V good though.:D
Kagey123 06-16-11, 06:13 AM I have opened another blend file while my project was mid rendering. The new file opened. Have I lost the part completed project or is it recoverable from somewhere. I am so mad at myself.:(
venussmileygal 08-09-11, 08:46 AM Hi there! hope you can help me. I have already gone a lot of research on how to change the background on my customize 20th century fox animation. I would like to have a all green/blue background. Can you guys help me with this? And if you guys already had a template in blender with plain background would like to ask a copy.
Would much appreciate your help guys. Thanks in advance,

kelemvor 09-13-11, 10:10 PM Hi all,
Haven't done one of these for a while but made one today. Problem is, Windows Media Player won't play the AVi file. VLC plays it just fine but WMP says it's not a valid file.
Of course, this also means that Movie Maker also won't read the file so I can't add in the audio to make my video like I normally do.
I'm using Blender 2.42a because I couldn't find the normal options in the new version. But I don't think that would explain the problem.
Any help would be great.
kelemvor 09-14-11, 08:40 AM Well, I was able to use Divs to convert the AVI to a divx file and then rename it back to an AVI and now WMP and movie maker read it fine. No idea what the problem was.
Anyway, one question about the FOX logo. On my laptop, I don't have a Slash key on the keypad so how do I unhide all the stuff before I render it? I don't recall the steps from a few years back when I made my last one of these.
I tried doing the FUnction + Slash from the number pad on the normal keyboard but that didn't seem to work.
Thanks.
meatwad070 09-28-11, 04:43 AM For those who are still looking for a DTS audio track. See 3 posts below because of the spam security (I had to have at least 3 posts)

Jay5298 01-29-12, 12:00 PM Just wondering if anybody has made a fox logo lately. I did one the other day using the same template that I used a long time ago, but this time I wanted to create an HD version. It worked fine but for some reason the spotlights in the foreground and next to the words now spin all the way around instead of just shining in the air and rotating a little side to side. Is there a way to fix this to make them not spin 360 degrees around?
