View Full Version : Make Your Own "FOX" Style Theater Logo
blazer003 08-25-06, 01:05 AM Seeing how popular the FOX Logo thread is, and how much work Reaper has had to do to make images for everyone, I have taken my Blender file and made a simpler version of the file that I hope everyone can use along with this walk through to change the words to whatever you want, and render yourself an image.
This should only take about an hour to do!
Download Blender
To start, you'll need Blender, available at www.blender.org . This amazing, yet completely free (no strings attached, whatsoever, full version free program No spyware, or adware. I know, it's hard to believe. I could spend another couple paragraphs explaining why it's free, and yet so powerful, but thats not the point of this thread, so just take my word for it... :D ) like I was saying, this amazing free program is just a 7 MB download. Setup is a sinch.
Download File
Ok, so now that you have Blender, download the blender file. Go here to my blend files (http://blender.sixmonkeys.geek.nz/view_album.php?set_albumName=album41) and download the FOX logo (about 1 MB) by clicking on the movie camera above it.
Once it's on your computer, double click to open it.
So if you've never done 3d work before, the interface looks daunting. Relax. Here's what you do.
Basic Principles
First, something must be clear. In Blender RIGHT CLICKING SELECTS OBJECTS. This is weird at first. So when I say to select something, I'm meaning right click it. Also, if I say Xkey or any other letter I mean that letter, in this case X, on your keyboard.
OK, so let's start on the left side of the screen, I have isolated the 20th Century Fox words to get rid of all the clutter. Let's start by changing the 20th to what you want.
I'm going to change it to Thunderclap.
Changing the Text
First select the "20" (RIGHT CLICK IT). It is a seperate object from the "th". Press delete key on your keyboard or Xkey they both do the same thing, then enter to confirm.
Now select the "th". Press Gkey to grab the th", then, without clicking your mouse press Xkey on the keyboard. Now as you move your mouse, the "th" will only move side to side, not up and down, so move it to the center of the pedestal, and (left) click to release it.
Press your TABkey to go into edit mode. You should see a cursor after the text. Backspace twice and then type like normal, whatever you want there. Don't worry if it doesn't fit right now.
Press TABkey to get back out of edit mode once you are finished typing your top line. Ok, the text should still be centered, but it may be to thin or too wide, or not tall enough. That is what those colored handles are for in the middle of the text. (See "handles" image below)
Scaling (sizing)
It's pretty straight forward. With your text still selected, and out of edit mode, click and drag the green handle (green square on the end of the line) to scale the height, and the red handle to scale the width.
Edit the other lines
OK, now you should be able to edit the middle and bottom lines. Remember, TAB goes in and out of edit mode, and Gkey will grab them and move them.
Reveal the Rest of the Project
So now you have your text that you want, we need to bring back the rest of the project that I hid. With the mouse cursor in the screen we've been working in, press the / KEY (the forward slash key) on the number keypad on the right side of your keyboard. You should see a lot of complicated stuff surround the text you've created.
*NEW*
Sorry, the black title bars were just for my image. I didn't think to take them out. Anyway, all they are are two black planes parented to the camera. If you don't want them, go into camera view, by placing your mouse cursor in one of the 3d view windows and pressing "0" (zero) on the number pad, you can then select the bars (by right clicking them) and press delete to get rid of them.
Rendering
Now we go to rendering, or a computer graphics word for the computer making your image. First go to the render buttons, which is the last button at the top of the bottom window (shown in image below "Go to RENDER SETTINGS").
Ok, everything is already set up to render an image with a resolution of 1280x960, as shown in the resolution settings. (see render settings image below) The file type is already set for jpeg. You can choose a more lossless format (better quality) like TGA, BMP, or PNG if you'd like, or enter a different resolution in the resolution settings by clicking the number that's there, and typing your own in.
Press the render button as shown, and wait. You should see another window come up, and it will slowly fill with more and more of your fox style logo image. When the entire image is completed, which will probably take a few minutes, press F3 on your keyboard. This will bring the main blender window back up, and a new window where you can save your image. Type the name where I have typed "FOX logo image", and press save and there you go. (see saving.jpg)
I will try to keep up to date with this thread, so if you have any questions, ask them here and I'll try and answer them. I think I was pretty thorough but if there's something you don't understand, or I forgot to cover, let me know.
Animating
For anyone more advanced that wants to make an animation, this file is MUCH better than the old one in that regard. As long as you have the latest version of Blender (2.42) this file will render much faster. It won't work with previous versions (at least not correctly.)
To animate this, you should probably set the format to AVI RAW or AVI Codec and your codec of choice. If you leave it on jpg or another image format, it will save a series of numbered stills. Some video programs (Premiere and others) can convert the stills to video. If you know how to edit video like this, stills might be better. Mainly because if you get rendered through frame 353 or something, and your computer gets shut down, with numbered stills, you just look in the directory where you are exporting your animation too, find what the last frame rendered was, and start fom there (by setting that number in the sta: under animation). With an AVI, you might have to start over, or guess where it ended and then splice them together.
Also, you probably want to change the resolution to whatever video format you'll be exporting to. You can set frame rate and resolution manually, or there are presets to the right for NTSC, PAL, and HD.
*NEW*
Your resolution directly and dramaticaly effects render times. Rendering at 1280x960 will take about twice as long as a 720x480 rendering, so if you are going to be playing this off a DVD or something, 720x480 will work fine. If you are playing it off of a HT computer, then maybe higher resolutions are more appropriate, but maybe more like 1080x720.
After you have your format set, just hit "ANIM".
The rendering will take a long time. It is set for 600 frames of animation, which is about what it needs to be to match the music, plus a little extra time to fade out at the end. Whatever time it takes you to render 1 frame, whip out your calculator and X that by 600.
The only other thing, is that when the camera first swoops over the letters, it might not look quite like the fox one, because your letters are likely not as high and therefore the camera is not as close, losing some of the effect.
You can go to the first frame and render it and see what it looks like, or render the first 50 frames by hitting anim, then stopping it by pressing escape, and then going back into Blender's main window and pressing play to view what you've just rendered.
The frame number is shown on the right of all the other buttons. The left and right arrows go to different frames. The up and down arrows skip 10 frames at a time. Shift+an arrow will skip to the first and last frame of the animation, and if you click on the frame number, you can type the number of the frame you want to go to.
If it doesn't look right, and you have little experience in Blender, PM me and I'll give you my email. You can email me the file, I will fix it for you, and email it back, and you can render it (or at least I will try).
If you do have experience in Blender, the camera is parented to a curve. Find the curve, take it into edit mode, select the first vertex, and move it up or down to get the desired height above your text.
So that's it. Let me know if you need anything else.

blazer003 08-25-06, 02:16 PM Thanks GPowers. Anyone tried it so far? It should only take about an hour. I'd like possitive feedback as well, so I know people are able to follow this all the way through. Anyway, enjoy.
PS. Now that I have 5 posts, I've gone back and inserted the links into the tutorial. YAY!
Cocophone 08-25-06, 02:32 PM Thanks.... I really liked your tutorial. Could you make one as simple to follow for an animated version?

Iceblade 08-25-06, 03:57 PM Blazer,
Thanks so much for providing the original file to Joe. I got a chance to check out your gallery and I think your work is just GREAT! Thanks for sharing this with us. I look forward to trying out your new file. The last render I did took in the neighborhood of 27 hours... so if it's down to an hour, I just might faint. :)
Thanks again,
Jeff
PS - If you have any advanced knowledge of how to take the raw digital output of the full scene render and create an anamorphic DVD, that'd be great. I still haven't worked out all the kinks in using Vegas Video and DVD Architect 3.0 to create the DVD. Right now it looks great on my widescreen tv, but it's letterboxed AND pillarboxed on my 4:3. Very weird.
garykagan 08-25-06, 04:17 PM Thanks GPowers. Anyone tried it so far? It should only take about an hour. I'd like possitive feedback as well, so I know people are able to follow this all the way through. Anyway, enjoy.

I tried it, it only took 20 minutest from start to finish and it is awesome. Thanks for the tutorial, it is perfect. I agree that now we need the animated tutorial!!!
Gary
garykagan 08-25-06, 04:20 PM I may have figured out how to animate it. Checking now....
Gary
Iceblade 08-25-06, 04:34 PM LOL!
I am an idiot. I misunderstood the "now it should take an hour" comment. I thought that the RENDERING of the animation took only an hour now. You meant editing and creating a single still frame, right? Is it Friday yet? Oh yeah, it is... t-minus 60 minutes to a cold beer. :)
Regs,
Jeff
Makomachine 08-25-06, 04:40 PM Do you just hit the "Anim" button to animate it when you are done?
Toxarch 08-25-06, 05:01 PM Well that was a cool thing for you to do. Maybe now Reaper won't have to wait for me to pick a theater name. I've been on his list as undecided for a long time now. Now I can try a few different names on my own and see what I like. Thanks Reaper for starting it and thanks blazer003 for making it easier for everyone.
WannaTheater 08-25-06, 05:30 PM Having a difficult time here... Downloaded blender-2.42a-windows.exe and installed. For some reason it must not have installed Python, because it couldn't find it on startup... so I went to python.org and installed Python-2.4.3.msi. Now blender finds Python. When I try to load in the FOX_logo.blend, I get "Error loading, file incomplete)...
Any ideas?
Thanks! I am looking forward to getting this working :)
--------------------------------
Figured it out.... Placement of the .blend file is apparently important. Must be in .blend directory
Toxarch 08-25-06, 05:52 PM Now select the "th". Press Gkey to grab the th", then, without clicking your mouse press Xkey on the keyboard. Now as you move your mouse, the "th" will only move side to side, not up and down, so move it to the center of the pedestal, and click to release it.
For that final click in that paragraph, you have to left click to release it. And when you move the red or green positioning tabs, you have to left click those too.
To move the words (or the bars between the words) up and down, right click the words, press the Gkey and then press the Zkey and move the mouse to where you want the words moved up and down. Then left click to release the word.
Had to redo it once or twice cause I accidentally messed with the Y axis placement and put it back in the wrong spot. Other than that, everything worked great for me and it takes maybe 10 minutes to do (including rendering) once you know what you are doing and with a decent speed computer. Thanks for making this nice and simple. I would love to see a video render intro in the same fashion if it were that simple.
Anyone else notice the gazebo thing on the bottom is not exactly the same as the original 20th Century logo? In this file, the building and the columns extend all the way to the base of the letters. In the original, the gazebo building is a free standing round building that isn't attached to anything. Just thought I'd point that out.
WannaTheater 08-25-06, 06:42 PM Everything worked out great! Thanks so much for the guide.
Now how do I get it to animate? :D
I am not so sure about this new file. It forces black bars into the render even when you are in true 16x9 mode. Is that what people really want?
FallingDown 08-25-06, 08:15 PM blazer,
firstly thanks for doing this file in the first place and letting us all mod it this way and also thanks to reaper for the original idea. it sure looks like a huge amount of pain to develop and it never ceases to amaze me when i run my animation ! bravo!!.
i came across the star wars blender file (ocrawl), by any chance did u ever see a blender gallery of this type of stuff....i would like to play around with a few of them now!!

I'm wondering is this true 2:35 width? If so, I would like that given my plans for a CIH setup with anamorphic lense in the near future.
I hit the Anim button and it appears to be doing the rendering of the animation - hope I didn't need to do anything else.
To download the Fox file RIGHT CLICK and "save as:" will get you the whole file. Left click and saving will not.

Anyone? I download the Blender program, then the blender file. When I double click on the file (after saving to my hard drive), Blender opens but says the file is incomplete. Any thoughts?

I reinstalled the program and the file and it now opens.
blazer003 08-27-06, 05:31 AM Yeah, for those of you having problems.
1. If it says the file is incomplete, I can only say download the file again, and make sure you downloaded the newest (2.42) version of Blender.
2. If you are having trouble with the interface not showing up, check to make sure you don't have manual Antialiasing settings going on your graphics card.
Also, if you have an older ATI graphics card, there are some known issues between it and Blender. There are work arounds, but you kind of have to know what you are doing with catalyst drivers for ATI graphics cards. Unfortunately I've never had this problem, and don't know anything about fixing it, however if you go to www.blenderartists.org and go into the forums and SEARCH for ATI and fix, you should find your answers. DO NOT GO IN AND POST "HOW DO I FIX MY ATI CARD?"!!! Search for it. Trust me, it's one of those touchy things people get upset about being asked when it can be searched for.
garykagan 08-27-06, 09:36 AM How many jpegs are output when the animation is completed? Mine has been running for 30 hours and I have 166 images for the animation so far. Hope it will be done soon! Next I need to figure out how to put that on a dvd with music and make the slide show fast enough for animation.
Gary
greighn 08-27-06, 11:24 AM Gary,
If you look at the screen below the ANIM button in Blender, it will tell you how many frames (it shows the start and stop frames for the animation). The one I am doing shows 600 as the stop frame. I am seriously feeling the need to upgrade my PC as at the rate I am going (about 100 frames every 12 hours), this is going to take way too long!!
blazer003,
Will changing the output resolution change the rendering time? If I drop it down to NTSC instead of 1280 x 960, will it render faster?
By the way, thanks for putting this together. Great job and much appreciated!
-Gary.
Makomachine 08-27-06, 12:04 PM Thanks to Reaper and Blazer for taking the time to share this with us - it amazes me what some people are capable of...
I'm in the process of rendering my custom intro in HD - taking a long time but well worth the wait. I've got a question for the board though in its implementation. I'll have a new 1080p PJ in the home theater currently under construction and wanted to leave the intro in HD to get the full affect. I've been researching different ways of implementing this intro in front of HD-DVD and DVD playback but am struggling with what is the best solution. I'd like the intro to be "seamless" with the main content but not sure how to accomplish this. I'm very green in the area of media streamers, HTPC, etc. - I'm guessing there is a way to do this, but I haven't been able to figure out a solution. Has anyone got detailed info on how to set this up with seamless integration into our movie watching? I'm willing to purchase some hardware to accomplish it if it is south of $400 or so. My current setup is VERY basic - Harmony 880 remote and a Toshiba HD-DVD player. I also have a HP Pavilion dv8000 laptop with XP and Windows Media Center on it that would be available for use as well. Thoughts?
littleneddy 08-27-06, 01:09 PM Yes, thank you Blazer and Reaper.
This is fantastic... within a few minutes I was able to get it done (except the rendering of course) :D .
Ned
blazer003 08-27-06, 02:54 PM It will absolutly take less time if you render at a lower resolution. ESPECIALLY if you have less than 512 MB of RAM. I will add this to my tutorial, because I don't think I made it clear enough. Sorry about that. :(
Thanks for the detailed instructions, it was very easy to follow and I had one rendered in minutes. I am currently animating the logo and it looks like it is going to take about 12 hours to do on my laptop. Is there a way that I can add this AVI file to movies so it automatically runs before the movie starts, using something like DVD shrink to make a new copy or something?
This was well timed as my efforts have been limited lately. Glad everyone is continuing to enjoy Blazer003's intro. Perhaps the old thread will die off and Blazer can support everyone in this thread. Cheers to the forum and Blazer for helping keep this alive.
syrinx21122112 08-27-06, 08:29 PM Very very nice.. Thanks for sharing this with us. I won't have to bother reaper for my intro now. Just finnish it. Look's just great. Thanks again...
b curry 08-27-06, 09:08 PM Does anyone have a tutorial for muxing the AVI and ac3?
I have not had success with VirtualDubMod or AVI-Mux_GUI.

Still searching for an answer to this one. If I wasn't set on HD, another DVD player would accomplish this ok. Any thoughts on how to implement in HD?
I don't know the details. But Alan Gouger told me that he ripped the disc to his hard drive in his HTPC and set a simple flag to tell the software to play the intro before all movies. He said it seamlessly plays his intro and then goes into the movie. So, perhaps you could ask him what software he is using to get this to work... or ask on the HTPC sub forum.
Makomachine 08-28-06, 05:26 PM Thanks Reaper - I'll PM him and see how he has it set up.
Toxarch 08-28-06, 09:22 PM I was just planning to have a cheap 2nd DVD player for the intro. Then do a macro that will switch to the intro DVD, play that and then switch back to the main player and show the movie. Should be simple to do. Only problem is that I would probably have to do this in a lower resolution and let the scaler do the work to get it back to the higher resolution for the projector.

But how do you bypass the trailers etc on the movie - or do you pre-set the primary DVD player with the movie at correct point (i.e. play option in menu) so when youy switch players you just hit enter (or marco enter).
baltizar 08-28-06, 11:58 PM What a wonderful program!, Thanks to Blazer and Reaper for their work.
I downloaded rendered and animated my first one in about 20hrs total. It came out perfect. I do have several questions about file formats and saving the file to a dvd. First off, I have no experience except for backing up my dvds with Nero 7, Decrypter, and Dvd shrink. They are pretty much automatic. What I would like to do is use this clip in a demo Dvd that I made from THX , Dolby digital trailers, and segments of good action scenes from various films that I like. I would like to know how I can add this clip to a Dvd disk that will play in a non computer dvd player. I cant burn this file to disk in any of the burning software that I mentioned above. They all say they don't support this format. I did the first clip in avi raw from the list. Is there a better codex in the list instead of avi to store the file in so I can burn to Dvd?. Do I need some other software to convert avi format to vob so I can burn and play it on a dvd?. Sorry for the dumb questions, I am video file stupid at this point. But this is a great program and I would like to learn more!
Thanks Ed
baltizar 08-29-06, 12:31 AM Thanks for everyones patience, I just found the answers to my questions. Sorry for my ignorance, the answers were right in front of me.

Toxarch 08-29-06, 01:52 PM But how do you bypass the trailers etc on the movie - or do you pre-set the primary DVD player with the movie at correct point (i.e. play option in menu) so when youy switch players you just hit enter (or marco enter).
Most players have the trailers as an option. All you have to do is preload the movie DVD before your guests walk in to give it time to play through the DVD intro.
electr0n 08-29-06, 03:41 PM I just made my jpeg last night and it looks amazing! Thanks for sharing the program and your expertise. My animation is crunching right now (looks like it will take about 32 hours - wow). I can't wait to see it.
Sorry if this has been asked but is there sound with this animation or is it just the graphics? I was wondering if we needed to add the fanfare music (or something of our own choosing) and how it is done. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to adding sound and editing a video file (avi).
You have to add sound. You can do it with an mp3 and VirtualDub. There are instructions in the other thread. I will let Blazer003 support this thread though. So, if you can't find the answer, be sure to ask Blazer what to do. I'm sure he will help out.
Palmtree 08-29-06, 05:45 PM Thanks Reaper - I'll PM him and see how he has it set up.
Please let us know if you come up with a solution to this. It would be really nice for it to automatically play before every movie.

You should be able to add the sound with VirtualDub - mp3 and VirtualDubMod - ac3, but I have not been able to do it. I'm sure I'm missing some little step but just can't quite figure it out. They are both freeware, just google for 'em.
Blender has been a lot of fun to play with, thanks again reaper and blazer003! My laptop has been working overtime!
If you figure out how to add the sound electr0n please share!
I added sound and converted it to an MPEG file using TMPG Enc Plus which has a trial download available. I found a 20 second sound clip that matches up perfectly here. (http://65.24.128.15/sounds/FX/20th_hq.mp3)
BSpielbauer 08-29-06, 11:32 PM Another option for obtaining the audio file is to use DVDDecrypter to extract the audio from some DVD that you happen to own. Then, use another program to "join" it to the animation file you have rendered. For this second step, I used NeroVision Express, which I happened to own. I was able to load up the animation (mine was an AVI file), and then overlay the audio file I had already "ripped" from my DVD. As I recall, I used a Star Wars DVD as my original source.
One advantage of this route was that the source audio file I found was a true 5.1 Dolby Digital file.
Also, for those who suspect that their animation is taking much much longer than it should be, it may be important to remember that it is best to shut down any and all Virus protection programs for the duration, and also any other programs which might potentially rob the PC of its system resources. I would also check and double check any screensavers and power management schemes which might cause your PC to "partially shut down" due to apparent inactivity from the keyboard or mouse. For example, if your Windows is set to disable the hard drive after a half hour of inactivity, this COULD cause things to run much slower. I forgot these things at first, and watched frames take 3 and one half minutes and longer to render at times. After shutting all of the "extra stuff" down, I saw times ranging from 54 seconds to 92 seconds, depending on the frame.
Hope some of this helps someone,
-Bruce
Palmtree 08-30-06, 09:27 AM Another option for obtaining the audio file is to use DVDDecrypter to extract the audio from some DVD that you happen to own.
How do you identify the Fox fanfare in DVDDecrypter?
Toxarch 08-30-06, 02:05 PM My video ended up being 19 seconds long.
I took the second MP3 from this website (http://www.reelclassics.com/Studios/Fox/fox.htm). It had a little better sound with the Cinemascope Edition (http://www.classicthemes.com/studioLogos.shtml). The music is 18 seconds long, but the second of no audio isn't a problem.
I then used Acoustica MP3 to WAV (http://www.acoustica.com/download.htm) free program to convert the MP3 to a WAV format. It's VERY simple to use once it's loaded.
Then I used the free VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) that Reaper suggested. Just open the AVI file in the program, click on the audio tab and select the WAV file you converted. Then save it as a new AVI file and you are done adding the sound to the video.
Render is complete - getting ready to animate! I am excited about this.
For music, I have the "Home Video Album" that has all the movie intros and some great movie music in general:
http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Home%20Video%20Album:1921047983
This CD is not made anymore, but you can find it used in many places.
baltizar 08-30-06, 09:31 PM Bruce,
Could you please give some details on how you used decrypter to extract the audio files. I have been trying for a few hours now, I cant seem to seperate the audio from the video image file. Also which application in Nerovision express were you using ? Could you give details on the steps you used in Nero.
Thanks for your time.
ED
Opps, Thanks, I got it, just needed to step away for a bit. Sat back down and it almost solved itself  .
ED :D
VERY COOL BY THE WAY, THIS FORUM IS AWESOME :)
electr0n 08-30-06, 09:46 PM Thanks everyone! I've got it up and running now with sound. I looks really impressive. I have two small problems though that I wanted some advice on.
1) I rendered it in the full screen aspect ratio for my screen (1177X662) - yes it took a long time! When I play the avi file with WinDVD 5 there is a black frame completely surrounding the image so that I only get about 3/4ths of the screen filled. I've actually seen this on some widescreen films too (Four weddings and a funeral) do you know how I can play this so it fills the screen? BTW if I play it with windows media player I can get it to go full screen but I have to start it and then hit the full screen button, then wait a few seconds for the top and bottom menu to go away - then the screen resizes to full screen (and by then the clip is over LOL).
2) My rendered file works great but there seems to be some jumpiness in the shading. It looks like a flickering in the lighting under the platforms that the letters are sitting on. Does anyone else see this? I'm wondering if my render settings had something to do with it. I chose avi-raw and my resolution was 1177X662, I didn't change anything else. If you have any suggestions I'll rerender it to see if I can get them to go away. I just didn't want to go through another 28 hour render session to get the same thing. ;-)
This is a great forum - thanks for all the help!
BSpielbauer 08-30-06, 09:52 PM Bruce,

First: to extract the audio using DVDDecrypter, I used this method:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=60246
I did have to search a bit and preview a few titles to find the correct one that had the intro I was looking for. Once I found it, as I recall, it turned out to be a single separate chapter. I may have used DVDShrink to actually determine WHICH title the intro was on, and then of course I noted the correct chapter number (in the case of this audio, as I recall, it was chapter one of the title where it was located.)
I then followed the steps in the link above, up until it switched gears and began to describe the "BeSweet" and "Belight" stuff. At that point, I ignored the remainder of the thread, and I started up Nero.
The application I used in Nero is actually called "NeroVision Express." I believe that I mentioned this in my original post above, but if I am wrong, I apologize. I have "Nerovision Express 3." You can also do the same with the predeccesor, "Nerovision Express 2." Note that this program is NOT owned by everyone who has other Nero programs. Many people have "Nero Burning Rom" because it came free with a burner that they bought. I purchased the complete suite of DVD burning programs from Nero, and this program came with it. I started up this program, and chose to "Make a new DVD." from there, I am able to import a video file (including for example any typical .avi file or MPEG file). Once it has been imported, there is a choice to "edit" the video. On that screen, you can then choose to "add an audio file." From there, the program is pretty intuitive. At the end you can burn the thing off to a blank DVD, or you can burn an image to your hard drive, so you can then use it later, with some other burning project.
If you do not have Nerovision Express, do not despair, there are lots of other programs that will allow one to "superimpose" an audio file with a video file. Do a search -- you should find them. In fact, most true video editing programs have this capacity.
Hope this helps,
-Bruce
baltizar 08-30-06, 10:58 PM Thanks for the info Bruce.
I just figured it out right before I posted this reply. I had to step away for a bit to regain my witts from being frustrated. But it works. I used shrink to re edit and burn just the 20 sec segment that I wanted from the Dvd. I was stuck trying to separate the audio file from the video file on the burned segment. Turns out I was wasting my time. I have Nero 7.0, all I had to do was drag the entire video file to the record audio in the dvd edit in Nero, the software did the rest. It came out perfect.
I too am getting the flickering in the lighting in the platforms as electron describes. Is anyone else getting this?, I am thinking it may be a setting, but it takes so long to render an animation(about 12hrs on my computer) that I don't want to experiment, Is anyone else getting this, or is it normal.
Thanks again Bruce. Ed
electr0n 08-30-06, 11:24 PM I fixed my first problem - I used Nerovision to change the avi to an mpg and set the 16:9 aspect ratio. So now it plays full screen (well widescreen) in WinDVD properly. I'm not sure why it didn't with the avi version (maybe the 16:9 flag wasn't set right?).
Baltizar you are seeing the flickering too? I'm going to rerender mine at 720 X 480 with the NTSC option using avi-raw just to see if that will make a difference. That should take about 10hours on my machine. I'll be able to check it tomorrow when I get home from work to see if it's any better. If anyone else has experience with this could you let us know what you did to fix it? Thanks-
I am using Nero Express 2 and I have a mpeg intro I want to use in front of my ISO movie file. I am going through the "Make My Own DVD" option, or whatever it is in Nero, and it allows me to place a ISO file in the "pre-burn" stage and even lets me preview it. It plays flawlessy there, but when I try to burn the dvd, it stops almost immediately when it is ready to burn the ISO file. I know it isn't an accepted file so does anyone have an idea of how I can burn both the mpeg intro as well as an ISO file?
Toxarch 08-31-06, 02:53 AM I get the flicker in the burn too. Thought it might be the resolution. So I did a couple of renders at a really low resolution so it would render quickly (under 10 minutes) so I wouldn't have to wait until tomorrow to see if it worked. First small one I did was 128x72 and it had the flicker. Second one was 72x48 and it also had the same flicker. The flicker was in the lines between the words and there was a little in the front face of the block the words are on.
So I think it might be in the spacing of the blocks that make up the lines between the words. The lines are made up of two blocks really close together. I'm guessing they are too close together so they are creating the flicker. Maybe I'll play around with it a little tomorrow and see if that gets rid of it.
Try really small resolutions if you want to render really quickly and try something out in an animation before you do a full resolution rendering.
w1lders 08-31-06, 06:14 AM The flickering problem is because you're using the latest version of blender.
Download version 2.37a and your problem will go away - took me about 5 renders and a load of messing about to realise this!
electr0n 08-31-06, 08:11 AM Thanks w1lders! Yes, I rerendered it last night in 720 X 480 and the flicker is still there. I'll try 2.37a now.

Download version 2.37a and your problem will go away - took me about 5 renders and a load of messing about to realise this!
That's why I couldn't fix it. Thanks for the info.
For anyone else who is looking for the older version, try this page:
http://download.blender.org/release/
Ah, so the new version is still problematic, eh? I would have hoped to see more presence from Blazer in his new thread. This is one problem that has plagued this intro since the day we started using it. I hope he can solve the flicker issue with the new versions. I cannot uncover its root cause, personally.
Actually, I thought his latest file would not work in 2.37a due to the nodes. So, now are these people stuck? They made thier own logo with 2.42a that can gen a still but cannot render a video? you seem to indicate that it worked OK for you?
electr0n 08-31-06, 01:48 PM I'll let you know in a couple of hours... I modified the file using 2.42. I uninstalled 2.42 and then installed 2.37a. Then I just went to render and it seems to be working. I guess I'll know this afternoon when I get home from work if it plays the avi file ok (and without flicker).
HTScotty 08-31-06, 02:26 PM Can someone please host the blender file? The link is dead.
Thanks!
baltizar 08-31-06, 02:53 PM I deleted Blender 2.42, then downloaded 2.37a, to try to fix the flickering as described as w1lders. I got an error in loading when I try to use blazers file that was already on my computer, so I deleted it and went to re download it, none of the links to the file seem to work. Would someone have a working link so I can try the older version of Blender. :D
Thanks, Ed
b curry 08-31-06, 04:17 PM I believe this should get you to the "Blender Release Archive": http://download.blender.org/release/.
tlogan6797 08-31-06, 04:43 PM DANG!
I never paid attention to this until you guys started talking about it. I just chalked it up to flashes of light from the spotlights. Now That I'm looking for it, I can see it.
Now I'm going to have to go fix it.
Tom
b curry 08-31-06, 04:51 PM Maybe it's intentional, part of the animation? Blazer003?
electr0n 08-31-06, 04:55 PM Oh no now I feel guilty. I'm making people that were previously happy with their intros unsatisfied! That was not the intent I assure you...
It's just that the render is so clear and beautiful in every other respect the flickering really stood out for me. Sounds like it's a relatively easy thing to fix though (assuming my rerender on 2.37a works!).
Toxarch 08-31-06, 05:36 PM Flicker is gone when using the older version. But it took out some of the pillars on the bottom closest building. The pillars on the curved part are still there, but the pillars on the straight part of the building are gone.
OK...
I got the animation done (19 hours). How do I get it into Nero? Oh, BTW, Blender is not responding - I am afraid that if I hit control alt delete, I'll have wasted 19 hours!!!!
Now, mind you, the animation is working perfectly, as is the c prompt window. I am not turning anything off until I hear something from you guys.
electr0n 08-31-06, 07:29 PM Ditto Toxarch - no flicker with the 2.37a version. Awesome! Thanks!
b curry 08-31-06, 08:23 PM Pam, the render should be on your C Drive in a file labeled render. It should be safe there until you delete it.
You rendered it as AVI raw, right? You should be able to move it to Nero as an AVI.
Toxarch 08-31-06, 10:22 PM Mine was set to save the file as "FOX FINAL" in the file I downloaded from Blazer. Look for something named "FOX FINAL0001_0600" in your C drive. It saves the file as it renders the animation so it should be OK to reboot your computer.
Anyone know how to add the pilars back? Maybe there is a way to copy an existing pilar and just paste a bunch of copies. That's the only big change I noticed when going to the old version.
Another thing I noticed is that the new version of blender gives a smoothed out look in the final render. The old version shows more detail when it's done. You can see it in the letters and the easiest place to see it is the light on the left of the letters with the sky background.

I first saved it as a jpeg - then when I read on about the avi, I changed it to the avi raw to animate. However, when I tried to find that file after the freeze, (I guess I never saved that one) only the jpeg showed up. Nineteen hours lost to a frozen computer. It looked wonderful!
To solve my problem, however, I took the jpeg and added it into one of my "Coke Slide" preshow DVDs. It begins with the Coke slides/trivia, then goes into "Let's ALl Go To THE Lobby", then into a "Welcome to our theatre...and now, our Feature Presentation" clip. After playing the "Our Feature Presentation" clip, I fade into the render. I added the Fox Fanfare (with Cinemascope addition) as background music. It'll do for now. When I have another 19 hours to give to the project, I'll re-animate it, making SURE I save it properly.
(sigh) You live...you learn...

PamW, it saves it in a different directory. look in c:\render
Toxarch 09-01-06, 12:23 AM PamW, it saves it in a different directory. look in c:\render
Right, it saves the file as soon as you start to render it and then alters the AVI file as it goes. You never have to save it manually. It has to be there somewhere.

I Found IT!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks ya'll!
bsuttie 09-01-06, 07:51 AM OK for anyone else having loading / flickering problems with this here's my findings.
Originally tried V2.37a
Couldn't load blend file - "Invalid Read Error"
Changed to V2.42a
Opened fine, edited fine but gave flickering on render.
Only way I could get it to work was save the edited file from V2.42a, then re-install V2.37a and open and render from there. That result was perfect.
Hope this helps someone.
Many thanks for your work on this!
regards
Brian
Chiahead 09-01-06, 10:20 AM Ok, my render is done, and I have the WAV file, but when I use VirtualDub to combine the 2, the result is clean for the first 5 seconds, then everything (audio and video) is studdard. Sounds almost like those old movies in elementary school where the film was boucing around and playing all distorted.
If I used Studio 8 (I got for free with my video card) I can add them, but it is more difficult than what Virtual Dub seems to do. Also Studio 8 saves the AVI as 75 megs instead of the over 600 Megs that blender created.
Any ideas?
tlogan6797 09-01-06, 10:51 AM Any ideas on getting a fade in and out to black? I've tried taking my raw avi render and pulling in to Movie Maker. It is really easy to add the fades and save it as an avi file.
BUT...
then it seems like no other software can read the new avi file (Damn you, Microsoft!). I can't use the suggested muxing software (page 53 or so on the original thread) to add the ac3 file and the Avi2DVD can't read it either.
Any other suggestions for adding the fades?
Tom
I'm having the same problem as Chiahead. Anyone know why?
bsuttie 09-01-06, 11:38 AM Are you trying to play back an uncompressed AVI file? Unless you have a very fast computer with suitably fast discs I would expect this to stutter.
You will have to compress it to something more manageable before you are likely to get it to play back smoothly. In my case I went straight to MPEG2 at 6mbps for use on DVD.
regards
Brian
w1lders 09-01-06, 11:57 AM Download ulead movie maker, you can drop the avi file, music, and then add the fade out at the end.....easy....plus i think the demo is fully working so you can try it for free...
At least I can usuallyfollow step by step instructions pretty well, but not too good at figuring out this stuff out on my own.
Pretend you're talking to a computer illiterate. How do I compress the file to MPEG2?
Toxarch 09-01-06, 02:47 PM Chiahead, I am having the same problem.
I did my render for 9 or 10 hours overnight (AMD 3500+ and 1 gig dual channel DDR) and the render comes out great, except for the missing pillars. When playing the AVI with the WAV in VirtualDub, it plays choppy the first time and then fine afterwards. After saving the new AVI with audio, I tried playing the new file with Windows Media Viewer and I get the same problem Chiahead is having. It starts out OK, but then gets really bad. It stutters all the way through the video. Not sure why this is happening. I thought it might be a video player problem but it plays the render without the audio OK.
greighn 09-01-06, 03:41 PM Brian,
I too would appreciate tips on making an MPEG2 file. I didn't see that codec listed in the render options. Do I have to install something first?
Help much appreciated.
-Gary.

I put mine into Nero - You can add a fade to and out of black there. It took my avi raw file perfectly - I just dropped it in (once I found it! ;) )
blazer003 09-02-06, 03:32 AM Sorry, been on a business trip for a couple days, so I didn't have time to check this out. I am re rendering it as we speak to check out the flickering. I didn't notice it the first time I rendered it, but it could have been there. Unfortunately I deleted the sequence on accident (actually I overwrote it.) Anyway. For all this DVD compression stuff, sorry, I'm not the guy to ask. My formats are usually AVI's compressed with either DV codec or Indeo 5.1 for computer screens. When I do make a DVD, I just throw it into Pinnacle Liquid Edition or Premiere Pro.
Anyway, the file I just released will only work on Blender 2.42 because of compositing nodes. Those compositing nodes may be causing the problem. I did make some adjustments to the geometry on the new file to make it look more like the real FOX logo, including the pillars on the building.
I should have more info for you tomorrow night about the flickering. Are there any other Blender related problems anybody is having? I didn't notice any, but I was reading pretty fast.

Pretend you're talking to a computer illiterate. How do I compress the file to MPEG2?
Most consumer DVD authoring programmes include their own MPEG2 encoding. A good example would be ULead DVD Workshop or DVD Movie Factory (free trial available on ULead's website). You should be able to bring in the AVI and the audio and burn a disc from there.
Stand alone MPEG2 encoders include TMPGEnc and Canopus.
If I get a chance I'll put together a more complete tutorial using DVD Workshop later.
regards
Brian
bsuttie 09-02-06, 07:24 AM OK
For anyone who wants to include this on a DVD - perhaps to add before your own home movies, or slideshows here's a quick tutorial usind ULead's DVD Workshop 2 - a trial of which is available from ULead's website.
Run the programme and click on "New Project" - top left
Give it a name e.g. "My Intro"
Choose a location for your project, the default is probably fine.
Select the TV system you want - PAL or NTSC.
You can leave the subject and description blank.
Click "OK" This should take you to the "Edit" tab.
At the bottom you will see a couple of frames for video clips.
Above that are three buttons - use the left one of the three - "Add Video".
Navigate to your file in c:\Render unless you changed it in blender.
Select you file and click "Open" (or double click the file).
This will have added a new video clip to your timeline.
Go to the "Audio" tab near top left.
Click on the "Add Audio Track" button. (music note symbol with a +).
You should now be able to preview your combined audio and video in the main window. Please note that if your AVI file is uncompressed this may well stutter (particularly the first time) when palyed as your computer is struggling to keep up with the data rate. Don't worry, as long as all the frames are there it will encode fine.
You may now wish to trim the end of the video (particularly for those of you in PAL land - 600 frames at 25fps is 24 seconds).
Do this by dragging the "Mark Out" button (right hand side just above the jog bar underneath this video ppreview window).
Unfortunately DVD Workshop doesn't let you add a fade to the video (only the audio). If you wish this I can only suggest using a video editing programme - ULead VideoStudio 10 has been used succesfully by others.
At this stage you can add your own videos, slideshows etc as appropriate.
Just go back down to where we found the "Add Video" button. There are two others there for "Import from DVD" and "Add Image".
You can also move on to the "Menu" tab (at the top) and add menus etc although this is getting a bit beyond the realms of this tutorial.
Once happy with everything go to the "Finish" tab at the top.
Here you can preview your whole project including menu navigation etc.
Right, ready to burn to disc!
To the right of the numeric keypad there are three buttons. Select the top one "Burn Project to Disc".
Select an appropriate disc template (probably high quality).
Select your DVD drive.
And hit "Burn"
Hope all this is clear
regards
Brian
Any idea why it says unable to open file when I try to open my avi file in ULEAD?
DonnieW 09-03-06, 01:08 PM Anyway, the file I just released will only work on Blender 2.42 because of compositing nodes. Those compositing nodes may be causing the problem. I did make some adjustments to the geometry on the new file to make it look more like the real FOX logo, including the pillars on the building.
I've uninstalled the most recent version, reinstalled 2.37a and was able to successfully open and render the file. I don't know what "compositing nodes" are, however, they did not present a problem with the older release. Needless to say the flickering is gone.
As others have suggested, using a low-res test is a good idea. I've animated at 320x180 and it was pretty quick and large enough to detect problems. Final HD render is underway.
I cant seem to get an animation render without glitches

Blender 2.42a

Blender 2.37a
I 've tried some things to fix this but to no avail. Is there a way I can render the animation with different software?
BritInVA 09-03-06, 09:11 PM How do you:
- insert additional text?
- move text up & down?
Am I understanding right thats is best to edit in 2.42a but render in 2.37a?
Cheers,
Mark

Move the cursor over the text: right click to select, G to move, shift D to copy, Delete to Delete. All must be done after you select the text.
After you select (right click) - tab will enable edit for text. Backspace to clear; you can now enter new text. Tab again to exit edit.
I don't think you can render the 2.42a file in 2.37a.... but I could be wrong.
I cant seem to get an animation render without glitches

Blender 2.37a
I 've tried some things to fix this but to no avail. Is there a way I can render the animation with different software?
I am getting these same lines (used 2.41 to render) I have also tried 2.37a same result... any ideas on getting rid of these lines?
Robert_S 09-04-06, 01:27 AM Make sure the "Threads" option is turned off. I got those lines when I tried to run with multiple threads on 2.37a.
bsuttie 09-04-06, 03:13 AM I had similar lines at one point. I turned "Parts" for both X and Y to 1 instead of 4 (slightly beneath the "Render" button). This will render the whole frame rather than 16 tiles.

putbinoot 09-04-06, 05:30 PM Had trouble getting this to work but have been given a file that is now working, but after the animation has been rendered how do you save it. Hitting F3 does not seem to do anything, when i hit F3 after just rendering the jpeg i can save it but the same box does not appear afetr the animation. Can someone tell me where i am going wrong or point me to a tutorial. using 2.37a
greighn 09-04-06, 06:53 PM putbinoot,
The renders are saved automatically in c:\renders. You should find your files there, at least that's where mine were.

Bob - thanks
I had worked out how to Edit the 'existing' text items - I was looking for how to add a new text item.
I'm currently 'Animating' a file in v2.42a - looks like I'm getting a 'speckled' area like others. I thought some had got around this by rendering in v2.37a - but I've also seen that some have said they were not able to open 'blazers' file in 2.42a......so any clarifications would be gratefully received.
Also anyone got a high quality audio file to go with this. I've only been able to track down an MP3 version - or are others having success with this (I've not burned to DVD yet)
Cheers,
Mark

You reneder JPEG's using the JPEG feature and setting the frame you want rendered. I think it defaults to frame 601. This will render a still to the C:\render folder. If you've animated, it will also save to that folder. What I found out the HARD WAY was that if you accidentially hit animate again, it will over-write your exisitng render and will cause you to start all over again. ANIMATE once to AVI and then go to the c:\render folder and back up the completed file.
Stupid blender is not that intuitive. It''s a blender, I suppose it's not supposed to be intuitive.

Select (Right Click)
Shift D (this copies or duplicates the selected text), you can then drag the duplicated text to another position.
I duplicated the "th" and dragged it to the vertical center line. Then entered the edit (tab), Backspaced and then entered new text. Select and press g and you can move the new text to your intended position.

tlogan6797 09-05-06, 09:48 AM Pam -
I put mine into Nero - You can add a fade to and out of black there. It took my avi raw file perfectly - I just dropped it in (once I found it! )
I've tried Nero (the Ultra 7 version) as well, but the saved AVI cannot be read by the muxing software to add the ac3 file. AND the final burned file does not seem to have the same aspect ratio and does not fill the screen. If I go through all of the steps WITHOUT adding a fade, it works perfectly.
I guess I'm looking for software recommendations that can read the raw AVI file, edit it to easily add the fades and then save it as a raw AVI so that I can go on with the other steps. So far, all of the editing software I've tried does some kind of a conversion (to DVD-AVI?) that screws up the whole thing.
So far, maybe the Ulead Video Studio 10 is the only one?
Thanks,
Tom
Palmtree 09-05-06, 10:07 AM I wonder if anyone is having the same problem as me. It rendered beautifully. It plays really choppy in windows media player because of the large AVI file (about a gig). Anyway, adding the AC3 file seemed to work just fine. The problem seems to be in the conversion from AVI to DVD. I am using the free program AVI2DVD and it acts like everthing is fine and it plays great until the very end. The audio just cuts off a few seconds before it should be over. I tried doing the same thing but with an MP3 audio file and it does the exact same thing. I tried it with a crappy free program that converts AVI to MPEG but only at low resolution and it worked fine (it's just tiny) and the music lasts until the end. So what programs have successfully converted the AVI to DVD (preferrably free)?
b curry 09-05-06, 12:35 PM Palmtree,
I had the exact, same problem with AVI2DVD and Roxio 8.
I too am looking for "So what programs have successfully converted the AVI to DVD (preferrably free)?"

Pam - indicated success with Nero. Thats what came with my DVD burner - but as of this morning my first attempt was still rendering (frame 360). Hopefully when I get home it will be ready.
Maybe Pam can publish some 'idiots guide' for Nero?
[EDIT] On reflection I think Pam is using the full version of Nero - I just have the OEM version that came with my DVD burner and does not include DVD authoring. So looks like need to find an easy Freeware or splash out on some software.

BritInVA 09-05-06, 05:55 PM OK - I did the render and now have an AVI file and an mp3 for Audio.
From what I understand I needed a DVD Authoring program so as some had suggested I decided to download the evaluation version of DVD-Lab Standard.
However, I don't seem to be able to import an AVI.....only supports "*.m2p;*.m2v;*.mpv;*.mpg;*.mpeg;*.vob;*.vro;*.mpa;*.ac3;*.mp2 ;*.m2a;*.dts;*.wav"
So what am I doimng wrong :o

Yep,
I paid full price (free after rebates/coupons:D) for Nero 7 Ultra version. Would have been worth it even if I had to pay more! I had Nero 6 before and there were many bugs to deal with. Nero 7 is much smoother and very easy!
I originally had the OEM version and it didn't do anything I wanted, so I upgraded.
blazer003 09-06-06, 05:38 AM Ok, after doing some tinkering, it looks like the new compositing nodes are having a problem with the spot lights. This is a new feature to Blender, and therefore still has some bugs. I'm investigating this problem more, but here is a rundown of a process that seemed to work for me.
First of all, in the main render buttons window, click the "composite" button so it is off.
Now you have a choice to make. Render with or without motion blur.
That compositing node was supposed to do the motion blur (when something is blurry as it moves quickly past the camera) but it obviously had problems. Unfortunately, the old fashioned way to do motion blur takes 5 times longer. That was 60 hours of computer working to do the animation, as compared to the 16 it took to render the file using comp nodes.
Most people will be fine to render without motion blur, but to the trained eye, the difference is noticable, especially when things are moving quickly past the camera. So, if you want motion blur, click the "Mblur" button in the render buttons, and then click the 5 button just to the left of it so that it will render the file 5 times to get the blur as opposed to 8 times, 11 times, or 16 times. Hopefully this will be easy enough to follow. BTW. This is talking about for Blender 2.42.
putbinoot 09-06-06, 05:53 AM finished mine and it turned out to be 1.3gb  using 1080x720 so just dropped it in windows movie maker with mps track and reduced it to PAl and 3.5mb. used 2.37ablender.

So, to sort of answer my own questions along these lines from earlier in the thread, I found that using VirtualDub (it's free!) worked perferctly! But I did have to search for and downlown a plugin filter to do the fades. But once I did that it worked fast and easy according to the instructions in the other thread at around page 58 (using AVIMux and Avi2DVD).
1. Render using RENDER
2. Import to VirtualDub and add fades
3. use AVI MUX to add the ac3 sound file
4. use Avi2DVD to create a VOB file

putbinoot 09-06-06, 06:00 PM Do you not do that in blender at the right hand side under Format set the x & y as 16-9 resolution. I set mine as 1080 x 720 although i don't know if that is a true 16-9 resolution. I am sure somewhere in repears thread someone played around with seetings to get true 16-9.

I did some research/fittling to understand how to get a true 16:9 video of the logo. As a basis, I am using the instructions posted on page 58 of this thread to create the video.
It is true that DVDs have a resolution of 720x480. However, this is not what you want to render the video in out of blender. If you do, then avi2dvd will treat this as a 1.50 ratio video rather than a 1.78. Thus, it resizes the video and then adds black borders to the top and bottom. I verified this by looking at the temporary avisynth script that is uses to massage the video.
If you pick a true 16:9 resolution, then avi2dvd simply will resize the video to fit into a 720x480 frame without adding any black borders. I tried this and the script did not add any black borders. I need to re-render my video as a true 16:9 and run through the process to double check, but I am pretty confident it will be OK.
Now, here are some true 16:9 resolutions:
832x468
800x450
768x432
736x414
704x396
You just change blender to use this resolution and leave the aspectX/Y at 1. I am not sure which is the best one to use since there is a trade-off in terms of time and quality. Ultimately, the video will be resized to 720x480 so it may not make too big of a difference.
I am going to run a render at 800x450 which, to me, seems like a good middle ground.
I also tried creating a video using the trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements. First, it was a complete piece of cake. Just take the rendered AVI and AC3 sound file, drop them into a project and burn a DVD. There are a few setting changes you have to make but they are quick and easy. It is even really easy to add transitions into and out of the video. However, the trial puts a big "Adobe" logo in the video and also the quality was horrible around the diagonal lines - very jaggy. I am not sure if there is a setting for this or not.

yeah, I have tried several trial versions of things that seem to work pretty good and easy. They all have some drawback like words across the screen or super low resolution or something. Maybe I am too cheap. The problem is that I don't have any plans to do DVD authoring except for this--so I really don't want to spend any money on a full program for a one time deal.
I just bought a new soundcard that came with Wincinema pro. Maybe it will do what I need it to. I will give it a try after I get the card installed.

I am using the ac3 file (DTS 5.1) that I pulled out of the other thread and actually, the sound ends about 3 seconds before the 650 frames run out. Which led to my whole quest to figure out how to fade the ending. BTW - fading the begining gives a nicer, less abrupt start as well.

BritInVA 09-07-06, 10:28 AM For what its worth these are the steps that I performed in creating a personalized movie intro:
Followed Blazer003 instructions using Blender 2.42a. After 22 or so hours I had my own Fanfare :D . I do notice that there is a ‘gremlin’ in the animation. :(
http://users.adelphia.net/~abiandjordan/ht/gremlin.jpg
Not sure if this is what people are reporting as ‘sparkles’, or if its something I did wrong. It’s not in a Reaper version that I have. One mistake I did was to render using NTSC format settings – ended up with a 4:3 image :( . So I used the Reaper animation in my Intro.
I downloaded the ‘D3-Trailer-Demo’ by Kweezr from Swithey’s site and burned the ISO onto a DVD using DVD Decrypter.
· Start DVD Decrypter
· Choose Mode / ISO /Write
· Select via "Source" the ISO file you want to burn
· Choose File/Write to burn the image to CD/DVD (or click on the HD=>DVD image)
I then used DVD Decrypter again to extract the VIDEO_TS files of the clips
· Choose Mode / File
· Select the Destination
· Choose Decypt (or click on the DVD=>HD image.)
Then downloaded the trial edition of Nero 7 (http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-demo.php).
· After installing I opened Nero StartSmart
· Under the ‘Photo & Video’ (you hover over the top icons) section I selected ‘Make your own DVD-Video’. This opened Nero Vision 4
· Under ‘What would you like to do?’ I selected ‘Add Video Files’, browsed for my Fanfare render and Added to the Project.
· Under ‘What would you like to do?’ I selected ‘Edit Movie’
· I browsed for the MP3, I used the Cinemascope Edition (http://www.reelclassics.com/Studios/Fox/fox.htm) and dragged it to the audio track. Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· I then selected ‘Make Slide Show’ added a JPEG of “this Theater features equipment certified for” with Fade ‘Burn In’ and Fade ‘Crossfade’, edited for 5s (no audio). Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· I selected ‘Add Video Files’, browsed for the THX trailer and added to Projected. Went into ‘Edit Movie’ and edited length. Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· Selected ‘Make Slide Show’ added a JPEG of “and …” with Fade ‘Burn In’ and Fade ‘Crossfade’, edited for 5s (no audio). Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· I selected ‘Add Video Files’, browsed for the Dolby Digital and added to Projected. Went into ‘Edit Movie’ and edited length. Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· Selected ‘Make Slide Show’ added a JPEG of “and now for our Feature Presentation” with Fade ‘Burn In’ and Fade ‘Crossfade’ with the ‘Pearl & Dean Asteroid’ audio, edited for 15s. Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· Selected ‘Make Slide Show’ added a JPEG of a blank slide edited for 15s (this gives me time to switch to main movie). Clicked next to go back to the Project content.
· Changed the Titles of each Project element.
· Clicked Next
· Used default Menu and just gave it a meaningful header
· Clicked Next
· Clicked Next
· Clicked Burn
Came out pretty good…….at least me thinks

I have Nero 7...Do I understand this correctly? Can you create a slide-show, then burn regular DVD vob files behind it and have it all play off the same DVD? So far, I've only created pre-shows using .vob files. I would LOVE to add a slideshow without having to swap discs.

Sure can - all I did was create some slides in Powerpoint, then converted them to a JPG and added them as media files into a Slideshow........really simple! If I knew how to convert the movie into a low quality AVI for the web I'd do it but I'm still learning. Got the idea off PamW. I've also got some pre-made slides on the way from Steve Good - I'll let you know what they look like when I receive.

tlogan6797 09-07-06, 01:00 PM OK, I'll have to give a try. I guess blank DVDs are cheap enough now to waste a couple!

Yeah, well, that's sort of why I asked!
Tom
SRHookEm 09-07-06, 04:18 PM How long should this render and is there any way to see how far along it is?
Mine is rendering on a fast, dual processor mac G4 and it has been running for over 24 hours! Of course, most of that time I have been using other software while it renders in the background. But it did go by itself overnight.
This is taking a long time!
Iceblade 09-07-06, 04:33 PM SRHookEm,
Are you rendering the AVI or a JPG? What rez are you using? Render times of 20+ hours are completely normal for even fairly fast CPUs when rendering the AVI at 720x480 and higher. Expect 2 to 3x that time for 1080x720 or other "Hi Def" resolutions.
regs,
Jeff
BritInVA 09-07-06, 04:43 PM How Many frames are you rendering? Blazers003 was 600 and the Reaper one was 650 (I think).....you need to times this by the time to render each frame. When I did mine with NTSC format settings it was about 2mins per frame..... So in my case 600 frames x 2 mins = 20hrs. So if you did a higher resolution will be longer
Take a look at top left corner of the frame being rendered to see what frame number you are on.
Toxarch 09-07-06, 04:56 PM You can also add more frames if you want the intro to be longer. Just change the number of total frames to whatever you want. It's set at 30 frames per second right now so add 30 frames for ever second you want to add to the end. The extra frames will just be the lights moving back and forth in the background. Some might want the intro a little longer if using 2 DVD players to give it time to switch the projector and audio over to the other DVD player.
BritInVA 09-07-06, 05:26 PM Anyone know what to use to split the Audio / Video from a VOB file?
SRHookEm 09-07-06, 05:38 PM It's 1280 x 720, RAW AVI, 30 fps. I'm on frame 182 (reaper's file). I guess this is about right.
Thanks,
Steve

It's the 1280 x 720 that's making it take so long. Mine at 720 x 480 avi raw took 19 hours.

Ed - I didn't notice flicker just the 'gremlin' I mention in post #135. Which could have beenm me when I deleted the black bars.
I've not used the Reaper generic blender file yet. I have a DVD Intro that Reaper did me a while back. The DVD looks great but the sound was a little off and want to fix with the Cinemascope Edition (which sounds great) plus add some other stuff.
Problem I'm having is the Reaper audio is slightly longer than the Cinemascope Edition so I need to find a way to remove the audio fro the VOB file (hence post above) or I'm going to have to render a new image.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Tom-
What did you use to convert from AVI to DVD format? It's not that the sound is ending before the video--I realize that the sound file is just a little shorter than the video file. The problem is that the sound is actually cutting off before it is finished (like in mid note). The ac3 file I have is fine because when I play the AVI file the sound plays until the end (although it looks and sounds really bad because the file is about 1 gig in size and my PC cant' keep up with a file that big). Something is going wrong when changing the file from AVI to DVD format. It is strange because everything looks and sounds beautiful until the the end when the sound cuts out.
tlogan6797 09-08-06, 01:26 PM I used Avi2DVD. I just downloaded the free version and used the instruction on the other thread around page 53 or so. Actually, when I get through muxing the ac3 and the AVI, it doesn't appear to work at all. Once it goes through the conversion to DVD, it is fine.

My guess is you deleted a spotlight pan from the file when you deleted the black bars. I found that was not hard to do. They, spotlight pans, are part of the dotted lines. If you use the arrow keys, you can move trough frame by frame and see this.
If you have a 16:9 aspect set, the black bars won't show up anyways. No need to remove them for the render.
BritInVA 09-09-06, 10:49 AM Bob - Thanks. I'm going to start fresh and animate again today......will know if it worked tomorrow :)
BritInVA 09-12-06, 09:01 AM As mentioned, I ran a new animation with the Blazer003 file using the PAL 16:9 setting which resized the image in blender (to remove the bars). However, just got around to looking at the out put. The Gremlin is gone :D but its still in 4:3 :( .
What did I do wrong - should I have also set SizeX / SizeY to 800 / 450?
b curry 09-12-06, 10:08 AM BritInVA,
Your really giving your PC a work out!
Yes, set SizeX @ 800 and SizeY @ 450. Leave AspX and AspY both at 1. Make sure to change the box just below from Jepg to AVI Raw. Then click "ANIM". This will give you the 16:9 aspect with no black bars.
BritInVA 09-12-06, 10:40 AM Bob - Thanks will try again (going to use kids PC)
SRHookEm 09-12-06, 11:34 AM My final rendered avi 1280 x 720. I'm thinking I don't need this much info if I plan on burning to DVD and projecting--or do I?
If I want to export this to DVD from iMovie with sound, what resolution should I use for a 16:9 file?
b curry 09-12-06, 01:25 PM You should be OK SRHookEm.
I have Rendered a FULL High Definition video and added film grain and dust & scratches.
But I'm still getting some glitches in the render I used the "FOX_Logo_by_Matt_Hoecker.blend" and blender 2.42a "Do Composite" unselected. (The glitches seem to stop toward the end when the camera stops moving)
You can download my HD render Here (http://www.arkan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Fox-Intro.wmv) 17.8mb .wmv (its pretty cool)
I tested reapers file with blender 2.37a (640x400) and that looked glitch free or at least much less noticable. But blender 2.37a is so slooow!
b curry 09-12-06, 03:59 PM kunina,
What authoring / edit software did you use?
My render looks like yours (without grain, dust, and scratches). I'm looking forward to blender 2.42b.
BSpielbauer 09-12-06, 06:43 PM [EDIT] On reflection I think Pam is using the full version of Nero - I just have the OEM version that came with my DVD burner and does not include DVD authoring. So looks like need to find an easy Freeware or splash out on some software.
I believe I posted this info either in this thread, or earlier, but I, too had success with Nero. However, as mentioned above, I own the full-blown Nero package (the entire suite of programs), and I used the program called Nerovision Express 3. (Nerovision Express 2 would also work just as easily for this type of project, as I have used it many times as well.) This program allowed me to easily import the avi file, and then I was able to add my audio file onto it. I did this twice. The first attempt was using a stereo version of the audio track. The second attempt was when I re-did the project, and used an .ac3 file which had a true Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track. Both were a snap. The "Nerovision Express" program does have some editing capabilities, as well, although I did not use any of these.
When done, you can then save the result as a disc image onto your hard drive, or you can burn it to a disc. Either way, the program than "calls" on a second program -- "Nero Burning Rom" -- for the final part of the process.
Those who received a "free" version of "Nero" with their DVD player, or pre-loaded on a PC usually only have the program "Nero Burning Rom." They do NOT typically have Nerovision Express. This small program (Nero Burning Rom) may be an excellent burner, but it is NOT intended for editing, nor can it handle things like adding audio, or importing avi files, or conversions into a truly normal compliant DVD file structure.
Hope this helps to clarify,
-Bruce
Has anyone ever seen this error in virtualDub? Any ideas?

BritInVA 09-15-06, 10:40 AM My new render turned out perfect - used Blazer003 file, Blender 2.42, just increads frames to 650 and set SizeX @ 800 and SizeY @ 450, AspX and AspY both at 1.
I complied it in my intro disc and looks great :D
b curry 09-15-06, 12:44 PM Blazer003,
I was looking at your FOX Logo Animation on your home page, very nice. I noted no flicker. Have you or Blender changed something? Also, may I ask, is it possible to let us use this file to get the additional flying, scrolling verbiage?
Thanks Blazer003!

I think its because he used the generic intro that Reaper did, that has been posted for download at:
http://www.stargateunofficial.com/HT_Downloads.asp
and he probably used blender 2.37a to render the animation.

Well I suppose that's possible but... the generic file that Reaper used was originally from Blazer003's homepage.
And since Blazer003 started this thread (see #1 post here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=715166&page=1&pp=30)) and directed us to Blender 2.42a and his home page for the file, I assumed he used the new version and file.
Blazer003's animation appears to have the increased column count on the building from the newer file as well.
But maybe not?
greighn 09-24-06, 04:40 PM Has anyone been able to render using the latest Blender version (2.42a) without the flickering? I can only render flicker free using the 2.37A version and now it won't let me open a new copy of the original file from blazer003.
What's the trick?
Thanks.
-Gary.
Road Captain 09-26-06, 09:25 AM I have used the "FOX_Logo_by_Matt_Hoecker.blend". I made the text changes, animated the file, added the audio track to it. The problem is the brightness. The text is difficult to see as the file is playing. I thought it was just because I was looking at it on the computer screen so I actually burned the file to DVD and played it in my HT. Before I even mentioned anything, the wife said it was too dark and hard to read. Is there a way to lighten up the . blend file?
bebop86 09-26-06, 09:50 AM HEY GUYS- Since I am a computer dummy- I figured out the animation portion and got it to finish- Now what - How do I save it and put it on my computer or dvd??- I have windows xp- thanks-G
xuantocdo 09-26-06, 07:34 PM Would someone be kind enough to send me the 5.1 fox AC3 file? I tried but it's hopeless. My email is wgnguyen@hotmail.com
Thank you reaper for sharing the file :)
tlogan6797 09-27-06, 11:36 AM bebop86 -
It should be auto-saved in C:\render. Try looking there.
Tom
bebop86 09-27-06, 12:33 PM ok- I still do not get it-sorry- step by step once the anim is finished how do I get it to -play and get my coomputer to burn to a DVD- sorry but i guess I am not that quick- thanks, gary
tlogan6797 09-27-06, 02:48 PM Did you find it in the C:/render directory?
It should be called something like "Fox Final0001_0650.avi" and it's size should be about 658,000K
Try double clicking it. If you are set to have Windows Media Player auto play avi's then it should just start playing. If some other applicaiton opens and it doesn't play, close the application, go back to the file and right click on it. Then on that menu select "open with" and choose Windows Media player. IF windows Media PLaer is NOT on the list, then choose "choose program" and then choose Windows Media Player. THEN it should start playing.
As to burning on a DVD, that depends on what software you have on your machine. I think Windows Movie Maker can burn to a DVD. It should be installed if you are running Windows XP. If not you will need to get some burning software. There are free ones if you search around. I personally use a purchased copy of NERO 7.
Keep in mind that you are going to want to add sound (and probably a fade in and fade out). You need to read this thread thoroughly and look in the earlier thread (referenced earlier in THIS thread) around page 58 about how to do all of that. It is tricky, but can be done with free software. Some have used MovieMaker and some have used NERO to do it all.
Good luck,
Tom
bebop86 09-28-06, 10:13 AM hey tom- I found it- BUT I still can not get to work- when I go into the directory it shows( top left corner of screen 2 lines first says C:\render\
-the second shows fox final0001-600.avi then there is a box to the right that says "select output pictures" below it says cancel-when I right click or double click nothing happens????
help!!!
tlogan6797 09-28-06, 11:11 AM Are you trying to run it from within blender? Close blender.
My previous instructions were to try to run it from the Windows file explorer. On your desktop, you should have an icon named "My Computer." Double click it. Then doubleclick on the C: drive (in the Hardrives section - it should listed be first). Then doubleclick the render directory. THEN you should be able to doubleclick the "final" avi as in my instructions above.
Tom
Thanks for going through the effort of making this effortless!! It took me 20 minutes to render the image and then :) I ran the animation overnight.
Thanks again!
Touchdown 09-29-06, 10:54 AM Another note of thanks. I was able to make this pretty easily.
I saw someone posted awhile back that they made a Poster Print out of their rendered image. Just curious what settings (resolution) I should use if I want to do a poster size print?

Has anyone figured out how to solve the flickering? There is alot of flickering going on until the panning of the camera stops.
Munkee Boy 10-02-06, 05:38 PM Has anyone figured out how to solve the flickering? There is alot of flickering going on until the panning of the camera stops.
I would also like to know if anyone has solved this.
Munkee Boy 10-02-06, 07:28 PM Sure can - all I did was create some slides in Powerpoint, then converted them to a JPG and added them as media files into a Slideshow........really simple! If I knew how to convert the movie into a low quality AVI for the web I'd do it but I'm still learning. Got the idea off PamW. I've also got some pre-made slides on the way from Steve Good - I'll let you know what they look like when I receive.
Mark, did you ever get these slides? If so, how did they look?
Hello folks,
First of all I want to say big thanks to blazer003 for the sharing and writing an excellent tutorial.
I had finished making my own custom "fox" logo for my HT and all i needed was the "20th century fox" fanfare audio to go with it. I tried to extract the audio from a dvd but somehow it didn't quite sound right and it lacked the punch. I thought how cool it would be if it was in 5.1 surround format rather than stereo. So I decided to make my own orchestral mock-up using the Garritan Personal Orchestra and East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra sample instruments that I have and so far it turn out pretty close but this time it had more punch that I needed. Right now I still have it in stereo and will try to mix it in 5.1 surround when I get the chance. Some of you may like it enough to include it in your own intros so feel free to use it.
The only problem is that I don't have a server to host the file for everybody to download.
So if there's anybody who would be kind enough to host it for me I will upload the file for anybody who wants to use it. I also would like to get your impressions if it indeed sound close enough to the original or will it be of any use to you for your own custom ht intros.
PM me if you are willing to host the file and I will send it asap.
Does anybody have the 5.1 audio (DD or DTS) they could post alink to or PM if they have it?
Thanks guys!!
Munkee Boy 10-08-06, 11:17 PM .
Is there any way to render the thing in sections? And if so how to? Can the pieces be seemlessly put back together?
Thanks guys.
P.S. Munkee Boy - Ive sent you my email address. Looking forward to that file! Thanks!
Tom Harness 10-09-06, 05:10 PM Is there any way to render the thing in sections?
I suppose you could render the file in smaller avi segments. Just adjust the start and end frames on the Animation section of the Scenes panel. However, I suspect they would not go back together seamlessly. But I haven't tried it. Of course, you would have to make each file name unique to prevent overwriting the previously rendered section.
Serious animators render their output as a series of still frames and re-assemble them in editing or compositing software. Blender allows you to output in this manner. For example, simply change the file format to save the output to JPEG. Blender will save a series of numbered still files instead of an avi movie. The filename of each jpeg will be the same except for the end which will have 0001.jpg for the first file and 0650.jpg for the last if you render frames 1 through 650.
The advantage of this method is that a power failure or re-boot after 14 hours of rendering isn't a disaster. Just restart again and begin with the next frame you need. I made my intro this way and I suspect it takes about the same amount of time as putting it straight to avi.
Of course, you must have a program that can assemble a movie from a series of stills. I have an older version of Adobe Premiere and it does that easily. Simply load the first jpg in the file series and check a box that says 'numbered stills.' It loads all the stills and acts just like it loaded an avi file.
I think many editing programs can load files as a series of stills. You could test this technique out with just a few frames to see if it works for you.
If anyone is interested in how I made a 2.35 aspect ratio intro using a pretty convoluted method, let me know and I'll describe how I did it in this thread.

Munkee Boy 10-17-06, 08:23 PM This is an awesome thing, but did anyone figure out how to get rid of the "flicker" problem yet? I have the same issue.
I believe the consensus is to open and edit the file in 2.42a, then uninstall it and install 2.37a, and do the rendering with that version. This is the only thing that worked for me (and believe me, I damn near tried everything).
I did the hd .jpg stills & it took 26 hours to render. Mine flickers too. I'm not complaining, I still love it!!
Thanks..

sbowler579 10-23-06, 02:35 PM Great program guys. Just finished my own Fox logo and added music. Took only 19hrs not too bad compared to some. Thanks again for the awesome thread.
Heres a render i did for my desktop.
Ive acquired the .ac3 file and am having trouble using VirtualDubMod to combine them. In fact, how do I do it? I actually have Adobe Premiere Pro at work but it doesnt seem to like importing .ac3 files. Is there any alternatives to VDM or Premiere that will allow me to meld the video and audio easily? Im not interested in compressing this down to fit on DVD, Im gonna play it straight off Media Centre.

deskenaz 10-28-06, 09:49 AM Blazer - thanks for the file and the instructions. it all worked great. my only question is what about the sound? how do i get that wonderful music too?
Ok guys need a little help. I have rendered 600 individual jpegs. Had a play in Premiere but there was so many output settings I didint know what settings to use. I also have an .ac3 audio file that I want to add. Can anyone point me in the direction of which programs to use, and what settings to set? FWIW I want to run this file off my Media Centre PC to XBox 360, so ideally want it in wmv or mpeg format that the 360 can read.
Cheers guys.
Try virtualDub. I don't know the settings but I think you can reassemble the jpgs
baltizar 10-29-06, 10:09 AM Reaper,
I remember reading in one of these posts about a site that was hosting your original file, but I cant seem to locate it. Do you mind posting a link to it again, I would like to experiment with it a little.
Thank You, ED
If you look up the cool theater logo and search in it for the word "generic" you should find it.

Ive tried it, or rather VirtualDubMod. I have no trouble with creating an .avi out of the images (done this with Adobe Premiere) but VDM wont import the .ac3 file. So Im looking for a simple progrm that will convert my 600 jpegs to a movies (prferably .wmv or .mpeg) and allow me to import the .ac3 file. Any ideas?
Tom Harness 10-29-06, 06:26 PM The program AVI2DVD will assemble an avi file with an ac3 file and make it into an iso file which some DVD burn software can make into a DVD. It can also make a folder with all the files you need. Just copy the folder contents (with the two sub folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS to a blank DVD.
Hopefully this would work for you. The program is free and can be found easily via Google. It will not accept a sequence of jpg files so you'll have to use the avi you made.

Couldnt you have animated the file in Blender as AVI codec. that would have made things a lot easier for you?
I couldve but doing it in jpeg form at least allows me the advantage of doing a bit at a time. Besides, Premiere does a good job of creating an AVI file, albeit minus the .ac3 file import. So either way I would still have an AVI file with no .ac3 audio that needs to be converted (with no drop in 720p quality) to .wmv or .mpeg/.mpg.

spongeA 11-01-06, 05:53 PM This is quite cool...how are you using it? Are you putting it as at the start of movies you burn?
Guys, I rendered mine overnight but when I hit Play in the blender dos box that stays open it says out of mem couldn't open c:\render\fox final....avi.
I've got 2GB of ram and in task manager blender is only using 100MB. Plenty of extra available. How can I set how much memory blender uses? I rendered as Raw AVI if that makes a difference, was that the wrong choice?
Also, I have a fast dual core AMD processor and rendering was VERY slow, are there settings I should be optimizing within the program - specifically 100MB doesn't seem need enough memory for it to be working effectively.
tpag2000 11-01-06, 11:38 PM First off I want to say thanks to Blazer03 an reaper for the work they put into this, this is just awesome.
So I did a little searching on the blender artists forum and found a workaround/solution to most of the flicker problems (I've only tried in Blazer's version so far, not reaper's).
The basics are that some of the big "blocky" objects are set as "smooth" instead of "solid". This causes the renderer to try to smooth them out and ends up with the flickering. Something to do with too many hard angles, I don't really know the details... There were a couple things I did to work around the problem.
The lines separating the three rows of words are actually composed of two objects each. For each "line" the bottom object is mostly just a box with a beveled edge, and the one above it is a little fancier and has a more curved shape.
From either the front view (press the 1 key on the number pad if you don't have a front view, NOT the 1 key at the top of the keyboard). Now select the bottom box using the right mouse button. It should be "highlighted" (mine is highlighted in pink). Press the F9 key to get the edit buttons menu. There should be a menu labeled "Link and Materials". Find the button in that menu box at the bottom that says "Set Solid" and hit that one.
Now select the object just above the one we just edited. This time look in the menu box labeled "Mesh" for a button labeled "No V.Normal Flip" and push it. Pushing this button should change it from a light to dark color to indicate that it is "active". Repeat both of these steps for the other "line" separating the words.
Now select the big box the words sit on (again with the right mouse button). Turn on the "No V.Normal Flip" option just like we did above. Note I did NOT do a "Set Solid" because part of the box is actually curvy and applying this to the whole object would make the curves more blocky.
I also did the big base that everything sits on by switching to a top view (7 on the number pad), selecting it and doing both "Set Solid" AND "No V.Normal Flip".
Doing these things fixed the flicker for me on the lines, and it also fixed the distortion on the front of the pedestal as well as some "floor" shimering I saw. The shadows at the very begining of the animation still look a little jumpy to me, but I don't know how to fix these yet (I may try motion blur again now that the flicker is mostly fixed).
I've made a modified version of the .blend file but I have no where to put it. I'd be happy to send to someone with web space to host it, just PM me.
I hope this helps. I know I'm very happy to have this much of a "custom" intro. My plan is to build up an intro of my own using blender, but I'm still in the learning stages of using the program.

garykagan 11-03-06, 03:58 PM Hello all - quick question:
I rendered in HD and it took 4 days. I used VirtualDubMod to create the avi and this worked. A 4 gig file was created for a 20 second animation. When I play back the animation, it studders and goes too slow. I'm guessing that this is because the file is so large. Will it be this bad once burned to DVD and played back on a dvd player? Should I just redo at 720p?
thanks for any help,
Gary
From past experience, I'd say it is because of the large file size and if you convert it to DVD format during burning and play it on a normal DVD player, you should be fine.
garykagan 11-03-06, 11:46 PM Thanks reaper! I will give it a shot. The worst case is a lost 50 cents DVD...
Gary
dhageremtp 11-06-06, 10:48 AM When I attempt to use AVI2DVD I cannot chose anything under the audiostream box. I click on the box and its blank and gives me now drop down menu. I have already edited the file and attached the music, I just need to burn it to a DVD. Can anyone help me out????
larryep 11-11-06, 07:04 PM correct me if i am wrong guys. Does blender have batch processing. the way i understand it is when you have more than one cpu rendering the project. in my case i am doing manual batch processing. i output the project at 720x480 jpegs. i assign 300 hundred frames to the strongest cpu then 150 to the slower cpu's. all the jpegs are going to each render folder in the c drives. you can sit at one cpu and watch the horse race. I am averaging 420 of these jpegs every 3 hours. only 180 more to go as we speak.
so if you want to pick the pace up get as many cpu's going. I will put these pics and the fox music together in premiere.
still not sure if batch processing is correct term?
larryep 11-11-06, 07:09 PM one other tidbit, the first 280 frames or so take more rendering time because of the motion. my 2800 athlon was moving 20 secs. quicker per jpeg than my 3500 athlon. only because of the greater movement in the video.
RawB8figure 11-21-06, 12:22 PM I finished one, but in notice it flickers abit when it is moving. How does one fix this.
Thanks
I came accross a website (Peerless Productions (http://www.peerlessproductions.com/animation.html)) that has an Universal Studios style logo. I have contacted them and have the blender file. The guy said I could use it for non comercial use.
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in editiing the blender file so that all the AVSers could have an Universal Studios Logo/Animation to go with their Fox one?
I also have the clapboard and theater animation from him.
Thanks,
David
frydiggity 01-09-07, 11:17 AM I certainly would be interested in the blend files!
I'm actually rendering a version of the fox file at home as we speak, and would love to add others to the collection!
Thanks,
Matt.
Iceblade 01-09-07, 12:02 PM Ditto! Thanks for the offer. Let us know how we can get ahold of it if you get the file.
Regs,
Jeff
David,
Of course I'd be interested! Let me know!
Chiahead 01-09-07, 12:58 PM Definately count me in too.
mig1868 01-09-07, 01:01 PM I would also be very interested in getting this.
Mike
I have the files, but it is not as easy to edit as the Fox one from Blaze. I can't figure out how to change the text in it.
I will start a new post in the Theater Room Items & Accessories section (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=784015), hopfully we can an Universal style intro going.
jeffczyz 01-09-07, 08:14 PM WOW.. long thread.....
Blender is a great app(especially since it's free). You can create something very similiar to the Universal logo using other tools as well with less rendering time, but they aren't free.
I tend to stick to apps like Adobe After Effects with some of the plugs-in. Check out Zaxwerks.com. Those are the tools that most of the broadcast and motion graphic firms use. They have some good samples as well.
robbyrockman 02-01-07, 07:50 AM thank for all your help guys.... read the forums... answered lots of questions...and i got my fox logo all done but i have been having trouble with the star wars crawl/... i downloaded a full blender file somewhere on the forum..(ocrawl.zip)not the one that said... blazer003 or any one else. could u guys tell me how to animate it so that it can be imported to pinnacle studio 10. I want to use it as my dvd intro just befor menu selection. I want to know what steps should i take it to output it in correct format for studio 10. I am using latest blender sofware.
Thanks,
David
If you guys want, someone can PM me the blend file and I'll take a look at it to see what I can do. I might be able to figure out how to customize it and then post some instructions...
Oh whoops... I see a whole thread about this now.. I'll go read that one. I suspect you guys have it all figured out...
JRH_147 02-06-07, 02:42 PM Flickering issues -
Just ran this the last weekend - thanks to blazer003 and reaper BTW for all their hard work.
There really should be some note in the first post here explaining why there is flickering when using the latest 2.42 Blender. Hopefully blazer can edit it and save people the trouble of having to read all these pages to figure out why.
As I understand it now, the solution is to uninstall 2.42, and then install 2.37b and open my file and render it with the older version.
Here are some notes I compiled from various posts:
I believe the consensus is to open and edit the file in 2.42a, then uninstall it and install 2.37a, and do the rendering with that version. This is the only thing that worked for me (and believe me, I damn near tried everything).
http://download.blender.org/release/
I had similar lines at one point. I turned "Parts" for both X and Y to 1 instead of 4 (slightly beneath the "Render" button). This will render the whole frame rather than 16 tiles.
First of all, in the main render buttons window, click the "composite" button so it is off.
So, if you want motion blur, click the "Mblur" button in the render buttons, and then click the 5 button just to the left of it so that it will render the file 5 times to get the blur
My question is - can't I just render out the individual frames that flicker? I rendered out the 600 frames of animation - but there are probably only 10-20 frames that have the flicker in them. I'll try it tonight - but won't just rerendering the errant frames result in it being fixed? Or do you have to run it as a batch?
Thanks again for all your help - this is fantastic stuff!
kindakouki 02-06-07, 05:55 PM great writeup
JRH_147 02-10-07, 06:44 PM I'm currently doing Blazer's suggestion of turning off composites and then turning on the Motion Blur (5) with Blender 2.42
It is taking forever!!!!
In about 18 hours I've rendered out 40 frames (this is at 1360x768). In comparison without doing the above changes I managed to render out about 150 frames.
Note uninstalling and reinstalling 2.37 does seem to work but there are several columns missing off the dome model in the foreground.
I'll come back once the render is completely finished (in about 10 days!) and let you know how it looks. So far so good though. (No flickering)
fps_krumm 02-15-07, 04:27 PM A motion blur of 5 made it (obviously more blurry)
and turning composites off did not entirely get rid of the weird flickering.
So the previous poster's solution does not work.
I am curious about the shading of the render.
When It's rendering it starts as a rich, dark colored picture then changes to a dull, pale picture with almost no shading.
Does anyone know how to keep it from turning pale.
Chas821 02-16-07, 12:14 PM I tried the fixes posted here to get rid of the flickering problem:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8797660&&#post8797660
It worked like a charm with no render, unload blender, reload old blender, etc.
Now all I need to do if figure out the dang settings for a 16x9, 720P animation.
Once that is done I found a little program that converts AVI directly to DVD (ConvertXtoDVD). It'll cost some as the trial version put a watermark in the VOB but works well and........it's easy!!!!!
Using Blender 2.42
Good Luck,
Chuck

For 720p you would use 1280 x 720 30 frames a sec.
Chas821 02-16-07, 03:22 PM W84no1,
I've got the part for the 1280x720 but the aspect settings (AsPX and AsPY) are bugging me. If I click on the HD button in Blender, it shows 1 and 1, respectively. So I set 1280x720 size and both the AsPX and AsPY to 1 but my last animation came out with black bars on the top, bottom and sides.
Got any suggestions?
Chuck

Which version did you use reaper's or blazer003's?
I used blazer003's and had to remove the black bars that he had added t the .blend file.
*NEW*
Sorry, the black title bars were just for my image.
JRH_147 02-20-07, 05:29 PM Yep - doing my last changes did not work. Still flickering for me. Going to try a different way.
Chas821 02-21-07, 03:40 PM JRH,
Try the fix that I posted a few threads above this one. It works!!! I only saw 1 small area that still flickers. It's on the spot light directly in front/bottom of the sign. I'll play with it but I'm happy with what I have so why mess it up?

nelsona 03-13-07, 08:28 PM Getting an error message when trying to download the .blend file, can anyone rehost?
hifidigital 03-18-07, 03:25 PM Can someone PM the .blend file for this? Blazer's homepage is down and I can't find it anywhere else.
atagert 03-18-07, 06:04 PM Sure.

hifidigital 03-22-07, 07:45 PM without glitches?
I've tried all of the suggestions but my anim still have the weird glitches to them.
Chas821 03-23-07, 12:56 PM Hifi,
What kind of "glitches"? Are you talking about the flickering? I was able to completely eliminate the flickering in my build-up. See my previous posts.

Are you playing a burned DVD or trying to play the RAW AVI on your computer? You'll need some SERIOUS computer power for the latter.
bearhawk260 03-23-07, 08:44 PM You can also use Audacity, free download to convert MP3 to WAV. Works well...You can also edit the file before saving if you want to remove material like cracks and scratches...
My video ended up being 19 seconds long.
Then save it as a new AVI file and you are done adding the sound to the video.
bearhawk260 03-23-07, 10:30 PM Ran a short ani. on a 480 sized video just to test. Using the below info, it worked great!!!
Now I'll render the complete 480 sized file overnight, match the fanfair for Fox and test it. Then I'll try to grab a different music file, hopefully with 5.1 if it will work.
Now, I am thinking a video server (HTPC) may be the better choice when the theater is complete...just so I can run this type of stuff!!! thanks everyone.

I got a PM from reaper and rendered the .blend with 2.37a and it worked like a charm. Thanks!
Update....
Hi guys!
I re-rendered the Fox file last night for another project. I noticed that Blender has a new version (2.43) and downloaded it. Although it still has the flickers (which I will fix from the post dated 11/01/06 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8797660&&#post8797660 ) it only took a little over 2 hours to animate. My first try back in August took 19 hours (same resolution).
Just a heads up.
bigtony777 04-25-07, 11:41 AM Alright, I give up. I have been trying for hours to find a site to download the sound to the 20th Century Fox trailer. Most no longer work, or I can't seem to download, but simply play it on the site. Can someone please help me out?
Thanks

Just get a DVD from fox and pull it from that.
