Hi all,
I'm looking into buying a NAS as a media server. I want to be able to stream audio and video to my XBMC, PC and Axim x51v with Windows Mobile 5. I'm looking for the cheapest solution. All devices will be connected via a router.
Do I need to go for a home media server (Buffalos for example) or is the streaming already handled by XBMC and my PC's? Will I a be able to stream media using just a simple NAS?
Love the site!
Thanks.
I am using a Buffalo Terastation for my music/pictures/videos for my Xboxes. I have not tried streaming Shoutcast to my boxes yet. Works as advertised, easy setup, no problems. However, the Terastation does not support drive spindown, and instead you specify a 'sleep' period of time where the Terstation is shut down. It does not re-awake until the time has expired. So I set mine for midnight to 7am. I figure nobody in my family will be up. YMMV

OK so just to clarify you are using the Terrastation as opposed to the Terrastation Home Server? (I cannot link to the products as I'm restricted until I've 5 posts  )
In other words I do not need the "Built-in DLNA Server for Easy Playback of Multimedia Files Directly to your Entertainment Center" functionality of the Home Server because XBMC does the streaming, am i right?
If that is the case then am I right in saying any NAS drive will do?
Thanks for your input.
Any NAS that supports SMB / CIFS (which should be all of them) will stream to XBMC.
No middleware required.

I'm using a Yellow Machine. They just updated their firmware and provide server software. Streams great to my XBMC and my Dlink 520... no PC required. I bought the Diskless version and added my own drives.

I have a PC Server (old laptop), ReadyNAS X6 and a Buffalo Terastation... All work well.... Can't beat the buffalo for the price but my next one will be another readyNas NV....

Thanks guys. Seeing as I don't need the multimedia streaming functionality I'm going to go with the Linkstation Pro.
thanks!
If you have some old PC gear lying around why dont you build your own NAS. You can use NASLite or FreeNAS software. I stream to the XBOX and my HTPC without probs.
I'm using a ReadyNAS X6 and also have an external drive attached to it that serves movies to the xbox. I just bought a sata enclosure so I can pull the drive out of one of my PC's and attach that to the X6. I'll retire the PC since it was mainly just serving up movies anyway. With the new firmware update on the X6 the drives can spin down when not in use. It's a good option if you've got the $$. Infrant support is top notch.

Is there some problem with long file names on a Terrastation? I keep getting an error message saying something about the file names when I try to copy media files from my Mac to my Terrastation.
