FWIW, I got a phone call (automated) from UPS last night explaining that there would be a delivery tomorrow (Monday) between 8-7 and somebody would need to be there to sign for it. It's rainy here today, so I told our babysitter to stay home until the package arrives. Can't wait to get back to Guitar Hero tonight. Total turnaround time -- from phone call to MS to 360 to my door -- about 25 days.
I just got my "refurb" 360 back today. Surprise! It is BRAND NEW. It has a manufacture date of 8/1/07. Whole thing took 3 weeks when you factor in 1 week each way for shipping. Wow, I am surprised and pleased. Also got 1 month of live for free card.

That's pretty cool. I hope I get one with BenQ and 2 heatsinks. Does yours have HDMI?
I wonder if that's what MS is doing with all the 360s already in the channel. They pulled them all in as the new HDMI ones go out, refurb them to new spec and ship them out as new replacements? If the repacement has HDMI, then no, it's just new.
spyder696969 08-20-07, 06:22 PM HDMI replacements? You guys are killing me.
HDMI replacements? You guys are killing me.
No, no HDMI. Just a new xbox, but same AV connections as the old one.
spyder696969 08-20-07, 09:19 PM Unfortunately, the only way to be certain if the unit is truly new or old is to open it up and check the manufactuing date on the POS X-Clamps. It would be extremely easy for MS to simply slap a new shell around old, "refurbished" parts from their mountain of returns.
I suppose one way to tell if it's at least newer, would be if there were a BenQ drive inside.
Read somewhere when they fix one they change build date to date repaired.

You may be right. I checked, it has the old Toshiba drive. Sorry for the false excitement.

Definitely NOT new then, if it has the Toshiba drive.
The replacement I received yesterday had a 12/2005 build date accg to the back of the unit.
Also, they inexplicably included a power supply in the box. (I did not send in my old one.)
Goalier95 08-21-07, 10:34 AM Bought the Elite this past Saturday (8/18):
• Build date: 07/24
• Keep it horizontal with plenty of vents top and sides (still the bottom of the unit gets hot....)
• played GRAW1 and loading screen froze during the early levels, didn't think much of it so I had to replay it from the beginning and no probs.
• last night during power on... viola! RROD! don't know the error code, monitor was off.
• unplugged the 360 and restarted a couple times, still got the RRing
• after the third time, powered up and no problems, played a few games no freezing.
New Elite batches seem to be crap... if this happens again i'm returning this unit to BBuy. BTW, I elevated the 360 by using 4 small wood blocks about an inch off and I'm using a small fan directly aimed to cool the bottom of the unit. The one concern that got me was the Elite was not even warmed up and I got the RR!! At least GOW plays without freezing up and that's what matters the most to me.

My Elite RR'd after maybe being on one minute.

Run, do not walk, to the returns counter. It's only going to get worse.
MeelaPo 08-21-07, 02:35 PM The last few days my XBox 360 (launch) has been crashing during Forza 2. When I restart the console I get the red light error however restarting it again fixes the issue. I called MS and they are sending a repair box to me however they also said if it's not related to the red light error they will charge me $104 CDN. Has anyone else experienced this (intermittent RROD)? I was concerned that the error wouldn't show up when they tested my machine but she said they do "additional tests" to check the hardware.
Also, they said I need to remove my faceplate before I send it in. Is this correct? I don't have a fancy one, just the regular one so I'm not sure why they wouldn't want me to send it in like that.

I think if I were you I'd wait for complete death. It's not far away. I had numerous Forza crashes before the RRoD. Forza does a good job of hastening the inevitable. Don't let them charge you anything. Dispute any charges to your credit card. Take a picture of the RRoD next time you get it. Force the issue, play a lot of Forza 2!

My 360 kept crashing when I was trying to play Crackdown. Then I got RROD. Restart cleared the error but continued crashing on Guitar Hero and other games made it unplayable. Never got to the point where I could not get past RROD with a restart. (My first 360 was stuck at RROD.) I called MS and they sent me the coffin box. They explained the repair would be free.
They didn't ask me to remove the faceplate, just the hard drive.
It arrived yesterday (about 4 weeks after the call). For whatever reason, they included a new power supply. Also, a one month gold live card.

Haha, I will try my best to play as much Forza 2 as possible. I'm hoping getting this fixed will fix additional problems I have been having like when the Tray thingy says "Close Tray" even though it is closed or "Open Tray" when there is a game in there.
So I finally get my repaired xbox back after the RRoD. Plug it in, try to get through the video setup and then blank screen. Try resetting the video options using the restart-Y-Rtrigger trick. Still blank. :(
Of course they have managed to replace my broken Xbox with ANOTHER broken Xbox!

Sibilance 08-22-07, 12:00 AM ... Wonders of wonders, I /buy/ an HDTV, and my 360 gives me the red rings.
It gives me the red rings erratically, but with increasing frequency and longer and longer periods of fussing with it to get it to finally boot cleanly.
I'm sending it in to Microsoft for repair. Glad to hear that /other/ people are having erratic RRODs and haven't had issues getting them repaired. I was afraid that I'd go through the effort of shipping the thing off, then have it sent back because there are 'no issues found.'
Just got mine back this evening, after missing the delivery yesterday. It is in fact my original box and I'm happy about that. That means whatever it was the turned around in 3 days. WOW and got a Live month free in the deal, I know its not much but it does mean something.
So I called the service line about my broken "repaired" 360. Gotta send it back. I'll be getting a free copy of Kameo out of it, but I'd rather have my 360!

Wow, that's sad. A $5 game for your inconvenience. :(
guys, FOUR friends at work now have had their 360's die over the last few weeks. it's almost becoming an inside joke now in our department!
Regardless of the warranty, I still feel cheated everytime I read about someone having to wait months to receive yet another defective 360. A sense of arrogance cant help but be detected. It's like a chef that has a prime cut of filet mignon returned for being over done, then sends out the next serving exactly the same way.
Hopefully everyone gets sorted and is compensated for their troubles.

but he's getting a copy of KAMEO. how huge is that?
Midnight55 08-22-07, 04:37 PM I am sorry to hear that some are having a hard time getting their xboxes fixed. But I would like to say that was not my case. Granted it sucks that my launch 360 got the dreaded RROD about 3 weeks ago. However, my experience went very smoth and quite fast, as I got my 360 back with a couple of days ago, along with the month extension of xbox live.

Hopefully, you're being sarcastic. Kameo is an ancient game. Hardly worth the inconvenience of a dead 360 for who knows how long, only to be replaced with another defective unit.
That's like saying a mechanic had your car for a month, but, hey, you got a free oil change.
Yeah, I'm not to happy about getting a launch title for my trouble (how about a copy of Rock Band! ;) ).
I probably wouldn't have cared all that much if they had only sent me a replacement that worked.

Yes i was totally kidding. Completely insulting on the part of MS.....
Well, I checked the reapir website this AM and all of the sudden the Serial is different. I clicked it and it says no pending repair. So, I call and eventually get to a CSR who after using her best active listening techniques they teach in Customer service for US customers 101, determines that my 360 has been repaired and sent back. She gave me the new tracking number so I am good to go.
She then tells me that she will get the serial changed back to my old one. She puts me on hold and gets a supervisor, then comes back to say oops, they actually replaced my 360 and that is why the serial is different and she can't change it.
So, the good news is that I am hopefully getting a working 360 soon. The bad news is that the customer service is still borked and their new service site is useless since when they change your SN automatically, it short circuits your ability to determine that your service is completed and the new box on its way back.
MeelaPo 08-23-07, 12:24 PM Good news for me is that MS has just shipped my 'coffin' to me and should be here in the next couple of days. Bad news, if you can call it that, is my XBox has stopped misbehaving and has not frozen up on me (knock on wood) so I'm not getting the RROD. I'm guessing if it doesn't show the RROD and I send it to MS they may think I was lying about the whole thing and will charge me $100 to fix whatever :(
I just got back a refurb from March 07 and a much lower serial # than I had. It's fairly clean but has marks on the cover to the IR receiver. Now I hook it up and see if it works. Only got the 1 month card nothing else.

Mine worked intermittently with occasional RROD, they sent me a replacement with no hassle. (Other than the obvious hassle of being without for the duration of the process.) At least in my experience, did not need for the unit to be completely dead with only RROD.
Sibilance 08-23-07, 04:52 PM Thanks Chip Z. I posted a similar concern earlier, and this really helped me worry less.
I was debating just buying a new one, but I might give Microsoft a chance to fix this one.
Morkeleb 08-24-07, 12:56 PM I went through a long frustrating ordeal with my 360 repair. I started "logging" my repair hassle after getting different information on my repair status. Once I received my replacement console I called to get a second Live subscription card because my 360 was out for two months. I was told that they couldn't do that for me so I fired off a couple of emails with my repair "log" and my complaint. I received a call from the Xbox Repair and Replacement Specialist Team. In the end the rep emailed me a code to extend my Live account by 3 months (plus I had the 1 month card) and he changed my Live arcade games that I had bought over to my replacement console so I could play them with out being online.

so i'm not the only one who's had problems with their REPAIR STATUS page? Mine was received at their service center earlier this week, and the status showed that they started working on it. As of today, though, when i click on my registered serial number I either get an error message or "no pending repair". No mention of a new serial number.
Two calls to Xbox today were of little help, as the first guy could barely communicate with me, and the second one told me that the error messages meant that they are working on it (!).
You gotta love outsourced customer service. If their online status page actually worked none of this would even be neccessary...argh!!!!
oleus
One thing I am starting to notice now that I've been using it again. The replacement's fans are MUCH LLOUDER. I heard the other ones, this one is saying HEY CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW! :(

Unfortunately, that can be either a good OR a bad sign.
Good: More heat is escaping via the heatsinks, and thus, getting out of the unit.
Bad: They put too much A.S. on and the system is ramping up the fans to compensate.
bug drvr 08-24-07, 07:33 PM my Xbox360 died this past Friday (3 Aug) ... started freezing up about a week ago, then it died - 3 red lights. I bought it in Jan 07 and had less than 100 hours on it.
the coffin is on it's way.
received my XBox 360 replacement in the mail today ... would have gotten it two days ago but the XBox repair center put the wrong address on the box. three week turn around from phone call to receiving replacement.
Status site does the same thing to me. When my serial number changed 3 days ago I thought maybe it would ship the next day. Do they still send you an email the day a replacement is shipped?
MeelaPo 08-25-07, 02:02 AM Well, looks like the behaving XBox 360 is misbehaving once again and I think it's on its last legs. The box should be here any day. My friend got his 360 back and said it was a lot quieter than his older one. Hopefully they replace mine with a quieter one as well as one that has been cared for as much as mine (dusted, not abused, etc.).
ratbones 08-25-07, 02:19 AM One of my X360's has the 3RROD so I requested from MS the "coffin" and sent it last Friday and MS in Texas received it on Monday. Got an email stating MS repair received the x360 and will send out another email when it's repaired and sent back.
So yesterday I was curious and checked the online service repair status via servicexbox.com selected my registered x360 to read the following~
Manage your device
Device Information
Device: Xbox360 Hardware
Serial Number: 511386454806
Warranty Status: Out of Warranty <------------???
Repair Status: Device Received at Service
Ok so what got me bothered was the part where it says "Warranty Status: Out of Warranty". My X360 was an original release and built in '05 and the new MS extended warranty on 3RROD should cover my console. Might call MS and verify what's going on.
Has anyone sent in their X360 and checked out the repair status online? Did it say the same thing for "warranty status"?

Technically, you're out of warranty. The RRoD is being covered by a special extension. So that's prolly what that means. You won't be charged.
ratbones 08-25-07, 02:39 AM ^^^ok I get it..makes sense thanks for clearing that.
Sibilance 08-25-07, 04:20 AM Gave up. Bought an Elite. I'm still sending the RRODed 360 Pro in. After I get it back and stress test it, I'll send it off to a cousin on the poor side of the family.
With my luck, I'll probably end up getting back a really funked over 360 Pro, and someone else will get my immaculate 360.

That was a concern of mine as well but my replacement console looks as good as my original one did.

Exacly my fellings on my 2 month old pristine but dear Elite. I get an older noiser Elite. :(

I'm experiencing the same message of "No Pending Repair."
I've heard that this means everything from they just received my console to my console is on its way back to me. Like yours, the serial number hasn't changed on my status page either, so I know that a refurbished unit isn't on its way to me.
It arrived at the repair center on Thursday. On Friday, the status changed from "Empty box sent to customer" to "Console at repair center" to "No Pending Repair" in the span of about 2 hours. There's no way that they checked my console into the repair center, repaired it, and shipped it back to me within a 2 hour period.
For those that have gone through this process, what does the status change to after "No Pending Repair?" Does it ever change to "Returned to customer?" "No Pending Repair" is an odd way of stating that it is currently being repaired. I'm really confused about the whole process.
The problem with "no pending repair" is that since they changed your serial number to one that works, there is no pending repair on that unit. Iti s a good thing since that means you 360 has been replaced and should be on its way, but the way it is working now sucks from the standpoint of tracking. I sent an email to Majornelson and he replied that he passed this issue on to teh team so maybe they will fix it for future people. SInce it drives calls to their center on 800 lines they pay for it is in their best intrest to get it working.
My 360 is on teh UPS truck for delivery today and I have still not gotten an email saying it was fixed so I would not worry about that, just call 1-800-4my-xbox and get the tracking # there.
I had a launch console (though it was replaced once after 6 months a few days of use) and my warranty status was " In Warranty" so I would definitely call teh 800 number and check that.
:(
My damn bastard of a 360 got the 3 RROD last week. I use it regularly and was purchased at worst buy i believe 9 months ago. Thus far before the last update it froze a max of 2 times. Then after the latest update it randomly locked up. Out of nowhere it just RROD on me and I was pretty upset. The towel trick works though, but only temporarily... I love the system, really do! Just sucks I can't even play BioShock, my nightly Forza matches, R6V, and other titles due out soon like the beta for COD4  I also use it a lot as a streaming system and until my HD-A2 comes in has been my DVD player of choice (my other one died as well).
Here's the thing... MS is sending me a coffin to send out. I'm OK with it, but i purchased a 2 yr service plan from worst buy. Now I misplaced the terms page and was left calling (and talking in person) about what to do and how the plan goes. I got 2 stories. The first is the service plan expires after I exchange the system for a new one. The seconds story was the service plan was good for 2 yrs, no matter how many 360s i exchanged
Sibilance 08-27-07, 05:20 PM It expires after your first return.
It expires after your first return.
BAH! I guess I'll have to see if it can hold out for the 65nm chips. Anyone know when those are due to hit the market? I can get the HDMI equipped 90nm premiums (friend has one as well).
Hey, I have a odd issue. I get the 1023 error code. 3lights of death.
I was messing around with it and gor it to boot up for a few minnites without the harddrive. When I attached it it would frezze up. Then when rebooted it went to 3rings.
After 10mins of being on with out the HDD it frozze up. And went to lights.
After a hour id work again with out The HDD.
So I'm guessing the HDD become courupt during a frezze up and I'm having heat issues of some kind. Possible clamp issues.
I've got the retun box a few days ago. But I may get another xbox while I wait.
What issue would you say it has x-clamp bad?

This seems to be the case for most people..
My problem is that the serial number has not changed. So there is "no pending repair" on my original unit. The unit was delivered via FedEx on Thursday morning (but wasn't checked in on Thursday). It was checked in to the repair center on Friday morning. It then went from "device at repair center" to "no pending repair" in 2 hours. This concerns me, because if "no pending repair" means what it should mean, which is that it is on its way back to me, they checked it in and repaired it in under 2 hours. That's just difficult to believe.

Probably not an X-Clamp issue, per se, though X-Clamp removal might fix 1023 codes. Pray that your HDD isn't borked permanently. If it is, you'll likely get the same issue on the replacement unit.
Well if its also the HDD I might get a new one. As the 20gbs aren't to bad..
I figured it may be the xclamps as the fans seem to spin up way more then ussuall after 10 mins of Use. Ussully just prior to the frezze..

If your fans are ramping up to turbine engine speeds, then it's just an overheating issue. Removing the HDD probably just lets more airflow into the unit, prolonging the inevitable. Your hard drive is likely to be fine in this case. :)
Well that's good. Makes sence.
danforth 08-27-07, 11:43 PM Well, I decided to call Xbox Support. It looks like "No Pending Repair" meant that it was on its way back to me as well, just like most have stated. I'm still expecting it to not work properly whenever it gets here tomorrow since they spent so little time on it. But if it actually works then I couldn't be much happier about the process.
I just placed the call to have it repaired on Sunday (8/19), and then shipped my console to them on Wednesday (8/22). Besides the original empty box that was sent to me, they overnighted the console both ways. Pretty impressive to have it back on 8/28.
Thanks for the info!

I just placed the call to have it repaired on Sunday (8/19), and then shipped my console to them on Wednesday (8/22). Besides the original empty box that was sent to me, they overnighted the console both ways. Pretty impressive to have it back on 8/28.
Thanks for the info!
Overnight? Mine went 3 day and took about a month in total.:(
Did it go to TX?

Yep. From Dunbar, WV to McAllen, TX and back in a week.
Hopefully it actually works whenever it gets here tomorrow. I thought I was going to miss out on all of the big upcoming games.
Mine went 3 day on all legs of the journey and took almost a month as well. I seem to remember they used overnight the for my first RROD experience in winter 2006.

That seems strange. It seems like they'd be more willing to overnight it if it wasn't your first experience, since at that point it would be a bit more frustrating.
Also, as I feared (due to the 2 hour total check in and repair time), my console came back with the exact same problem. Do they even bother to check it before they send it back?
MeelaPo 08-28-07, 06:15 PM Sent my console out today. Hopefully it comes back working and a little quieter =). I'm in Canada so it was sent to the Canadian warehouse that fixes this stuff.
Turbokaw 08-28-07, 06:51 PM they have had mine for over a week now with no change on the repair status, just says received at the service center......

Mine came back much louder than the one Isent to them and the loudest of any 360 I've owned (5). I don't know if it's a new fan system or just loud?
spyder696969 08-29-07, 12:43 AM Last post /\ (previous page) Unfortunately, that can be either a good OR a bad sign.
Good: More heat is escaping via the heatsinks, and thus, getting out of the unit.
Bad: They put too much A.S. on and the system is ramping up the fans to compensate.
ratbones 08-29-07, 12:50 AM Ok I just check my xbox status and the SN# changed and says "no pending repair". But I still haven't gotten the email with the tracking number if they sent it.

THey do have a new website you can go to. The phone support isn't necessary anymore. Website was linked earlier in this thread, don't know it now.
jeepwrang3 08-29-07, 12:11 PM For some reason when i spoke with the rep at microsoft sunday, and even online i was getting the Not in Warranty explanation, and had to fight to explain i had the extended warranty.

Just go here: http://service.xbox.com/servicesignin.aspx
Sometimes it doesn't give the right message as far as the state of the repair. I have had it say "No pending repair" or sometimes it will not even show the xbox serial number. So you can try refreshing the page or (works best) log out of the system and then log back in.
I had a system that I was going to do the x-clamp fix but since the security sticker had not been removed, I sent it in to get repaired. It shows it is still under warranty and I am awaiting it to be fixed.
robshdtv 08-29-07, 02:25 PM Well my box 3 ringed again today. I did the Xclamp fix before the warranty was extended and it has worked for about 2 months flawlessly. I ended up opening it back up and redoing the mod and tightening everything back down again. She fired right up and was able to play for a while and everything was good.
Anybody else have a user modded Xclamp do this?
Think I'll be ordering a new HDMI premium as a backup since H3 is just around the corner and those definately have the new heat sinks.
I paid $400 for my 360 back in December and got the 2yr plan from Worst Buy due to rumors of 1/3 failures and only 1 yr warranty. Since my 360 crapped out on me last week I'm trying to upgrade to the Elite for $50 as it is now $450. Due to a typo on the original store's end on the receipt they won't honor the swap for a pro OR what I would like a $50 Elite upgrade (note it is not due to price drop that I am having this issue) but rather said I can only replace my 360pro with another 360pro if I returned the free game i received as the free promo, unopened. I have no problem with doing that WITHOUT the game for a pro but for $50 more why not go for the larger HDD equipped Elite?! I was told by 2 other BBs I could do this to the $50 Elite upgrade due to the 2 yr plan. I just don't understand how a store this large all seems to have 'their own policies'.
I realized even if something is preached by management, and even if it states otherwise on the terms of contract, Worst Buy is that type of store that would put a customer through frustrations over their policies so long as they don't have to do the extra work to fix what they did. To top it off, the second I walked in the store, I got the hint from security to customer service, from geek squad to manager that they would rather have me deal with my RRODed 360 via MS regardless if I had the plan or not.
So I now am forced to drive an extra hour after work to go to the initial store that did the adjustment on the receipt just to deal with my 360 being replaced for either a pro or an elite.
I guess this post was more of venting than anything. :(
I miss R6V, Forza 2, FN3, and now BioShock and other quality titles

Sigh... My launch-ish 360 just got the red rings. At least it's before the big games are out.
Cuco33, that's not a situation I would handle very well.
Firstly, BB is a POS store with ZERO customer service. I absolutely do hate them, as they seem to always handle problems completely ass backwards. You can be 100% right and have all the receipts and paperwork to prove it, but you still get treated like a 2nd class consumer. Situations like yours are also why I despise extended store warranties.
I'd give BB hell until the situation is resolved to your liking. Make yourself visible when communicating to staff and draw yourself a crowd. No one wants bad press, especially at a customer service desk.

COD4 and Halo for starters.

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH! After going to 3 BB stores (the last being the one I purchased the 360pro at) I had to haggle with their screw up. In the end, and after patiently waiting 45 minutes, I walked out the door with a new 360elite for only $50 more than what i paid for my 360pro back in December... Which is an extra win-win since technically my 3yr warranty with MS starts now so 1 extra year for 360 gaming :)
As for voicing my opinion, it was heard at the main store I had an issue with. Wifey says she wants to right in, she is appalled at the whole situation and says she could probably skim us something for free due to, as she said it 'the severity of the *ssholeness' :p
I think I found it most hysterical when the manager at the last store told me she could only do it if and only if I get the 2yr plan with the elite model at $80. I answered back asking her does she really think I want to deal with this mess again? Besides, why pay for 2yr warranty I can only use once when MS will back me up for 3 yrs?!

I had a simmilar issue with what WAS my home Best Buy. My TV got lemoned inder the BBEW. I asked the Magnolia/BB manager if it was possible to request a Samsung model as my replacement TV that they don't have a SKU on. In my conversation with this guy, another BB ***hole joins in the conversation to inform me that they are well within their right to make me take a used TV off the floor rather than try to special order a TV of my desire. I don't know where he came from but, he seemed to take over the conversarion and shut me down. I never yelled, was rude or anything that should make hime taqlk this way to a customer that purchsed thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from this store. I then left and went to another near by store. There I met another Magnolia rep who was 180 degrees from the others. He sent off an email to corporate and, though it took almost 2 months to get an answer (yes 2 months). That answer was yes and my replcement was special ordered. I await dlivery which should be mid Sept. So, basically not all BB people are ***holes, but you can run into some. Then again, you may find a gem!

I contacted CS and verified the new SN. CS says it's the new X360 that replaced my old one and it's on it's way home back to me. Tracking number I got confirms it left TX in transit.

Thanks for the linky. I wasn't being sarcastic at all. I'm curious as to what people consider a "big game" as being. I found what I consider about 3 "big" titles from the entire list (Doom, Version 3,496,712 not being one of them), so thanks!

I thought with the title "Forum Mobstigator" that you might have been trying to be a smart ass. heh... :) There are defiantly some good titles coming out yet this year. I counted 9 on my IGN "wishlist" for a total of $569.91.

LOL. My title comes from the movie discussion threads, for the most part, as it's typical for the torches and pitchforks to be raised up in my name quite often. Since I'm not a Halo fan in any way, shape, or form (everyone put away your weapons, please) it's sort of hard for me to be excited about games right now. If Cyberball 2072 is anything like the acrade version, that's good news for me though! Other than that, maybe the Looney Toons game, MoH, Scene It for the gf, and CoD4. Everything else is pretty far off in the distance right now.
i didn't have any red lights but i did have to turn in my 360 (big surprise there, huh?). it was a chore trying to tell the non-english speaking support that i can't play my 360. the support people (i had to call more than once) tried to say it was my tv. no, my other systems work fine. they asked me to move it to another tv. no, it still doesn't work. they had me try a different 360 cable, juggling my nutsack and punching my neighbor in the neck, but i still couldn't get anything. after multiple calls (what games were you playing when this happened? oh, it sounds like an xbox live problem, please hold while i transfer you to that department...NO YOU IDIOT, WHAT F***KING DIFFERENCE WHAT GAME I PLAY?!! I ALREADY TOLD YOU, I COULD BE WATCHING A MOVIE OR JUST HAVE IT ON TO STREAM MUSIC, I SEE NO F***KING PICTURE YOU MORON!!) i finally was able to get them to send me a 360 cardboard coffin and finally, after 2 weeks, my 369 is safely home (it has the same serial, so unless they just removed the casing onto a refurb one, i still have my orginal).
so, if that happens to you also, you get no picture or sound, and no red lights to tell you something is wrong, it's likely that your gpu or video card or is broken.
I received my new XBOX yesterday. It came before I got my coffin for my old one. I ordered the Premium on amazon with the HDMI. It's quieter than the old one, and it has the new heat sink in it. I've already got someone to buy my old one when it gets fixed. :)
Hopefully the new heat sinks solve the problems. I'm still using the VGA plug as I want to be able to use the optical output and overscan correction.
Got my Xbox back Wed. Plugged it up last night and RROD. What a bunch of idiots at Microsoft. Send me a dead return after waiting almost 5 weeks. I bought an Elite when this one died or I'd be mega pissed. Guess I get to call the ace tech support again.
so a new serial number is showing up in my status screen with "no pending repair". does this mean they are sending me or have already sent me a new one (or refurbished?)

Refurb on its way! No one gets new ones...
spyder696969 09-02-07, 02:17 PM With the mountainous avalanche of used parts MS has filling up countless warehouses by now, it is disconcertingly laughable to think anyone is ever going to get a "new" system.

SWEET! Just in time for Halo 3. I get to send my piece of crap 360 back AGAIN to M$ for yet another POS refurb that will die in another 6 months! I am really started to hate M$.

Just do the X-clamp fix and you wont have to worry about sending back anything !
BTW there was an interesting article on the teamxbox website regarding the x-clamp flaw. It stated there is a company selling a kit that replaces the cheap x-clamps with a better constructed version. Retail, $15.

Better parts will cost you about $7.50 at Lowe's, plus you'll get enough to do both the CPU and the GPU, not just one of the two. That video on the teamxbox site was hilarious. Don't clean the heatsink? Do the whole job in 4 minutes? Grab some giant pliers? Torque "screws" (really bolts) down in the way they did? Alrighty then.
I could likely do the entire X-Clamp mod, including breaking down the shell and AS removal, plus reassembly in about 7-8 minutes, but I doubt it would last, nor would I feel even remotely good about rushing. It's not about speed, it's about success.
If you have an Ace hardware nearby, you can get those exact parts they are using. If you look at my message #594 earlier in this thread, you can see the type of bolts I use. They have the smaller head and you tighten them down using a torx wrench. You can also get the split washers there although I don't use them. All that material to do the fix for one side (GPU heatsink) is less than $2. They are stupid for not recommending cleaning up and replacing the thermal compound.
Even with how cheap it is to do the fix, I would still send it in to MS because at some point, something else could happen and you would want to be covered.

I agree. The info on teamxbox website is not the ideal method for trying to fix the 3RROD. I did the correct method which has been linked to this thread for quite some time now. It been roughly 3 months and my 360 is running like an absolute "gem". :D:D
The reason I mentioned the Teamxbox article is that its the first time I have seen a major/substantial gaming site provide information about the xclamp problem and how to fix it(albeit not ideal). Heretofore, the xclamp problem/fix has been floating around gaming forums for a while, but not mentioned much by major gaming editors.
throwback559 09-04-07, 08:23 PM how did you get 50% off thats what i was trying to get and they wouldnt budge all they said was 25%.
I even asked and told them all i could afford was 60-70$ and they put me on hold and said no all they can do is 25%
thats bs
got a check in the mail 2day $70 wasnt expecting it. I was gonna call them and tell them something lucky i didnt. They should have listned to me back in MAY when my 360 broke i told them they should fix it for free and they were like NO you have to pay.

Why would they? Nothing like having 1 million people giving you $140, investing that $140 million, turning it over 10 times into billions upon billions, and making a mountain of money that matches the mountain of dead units you have. Then, tell everyone you put aside a measly $1 billion and attempt to look like a hero.
ryknoll3 09-07-07, 10:56 PM Has anyone bought their 360's from Samsclub and tried returning them there after a RROD. I bought mine almost exactly a year ago from there. They had a package that had an extra wireless controller and a play and charge kit for $450. I was reading their return policy and it said 100% satisfaction guaranteed, and gave no time frame except on a couple items like computers.
Unfortunately I just sent my 360 back in it's coffin before I read the return policy. If my refurb craps out, I might bring that back on the receipt from the original. Anyone else have any experience with Samsclub?
Bacon_67 09-07-07, 11:28 PM So what does it mean when the serial number on the service website changes, and there is a new tracking number which leads to a delivery to another person in a different state which happened before I even sent mine it...

Except that the 360 can be easily defined as a computer product. No way they will take it back.

Costco takes them back, no question.
Well I got the 3ROD a few months ago but when I turned it off and then back on and it seemed to work fine after that. Every so often the sound would go off but would come back on varied games. I just chalked it up to the games being buggy. A few weeks later it did the same thing and after turning it back on it seemed to work just fine again. Then about two weeks ago when I got APF 2K8 when it was trying to load the game from the dashboard it told me I had to put the game in a xbox 360 to play it and then the dash board started flashing on and off. So again I turned it off and then back on and it seemed to work fine. I didn't call them right away when that happened like I should have cuz I was trying to hold out for the new chips. Well I was in Best Buy last night picking up a new LCD monitor for my mom I saw they had a 360 Pro with HDMI so I got it. Well when I got home I decided to go ahead and have them fix it since it is still under full warranty. Well I went online to register my 360 on the support website and after entering all the data. It tells me an error has occurred and I need to call them. Ok...so I called them the first guy put me on hold and never came back after 25 minutes. So I hung up and called back. The next guy pretty much stayed on script. Which annoyed me when I told him I checked the hard drive thing and the PSU and I told him while the 3ROD didn't kill my console, it was a reoccurring. I also told him about the website issue he didn't seem to handle the fact I was giving him two issues at once. Anyway, he tried to tell me that my xbox issues were nothing to worry about but if it happens again to give them a call. I was like WTF are you serious? He gave me a ref# and hung up. So I just waited 25 minutes and called back. I gave the guy the ref# and told him the dashboard was flashing again. He said he would send my coffin out ASAP. I also told him about the online registering thing and he verified my info and said it may take a few minutes. Well then it worked but it said there was no repairs pending. He again said that may take an hour or so to update the status. So I got my ref# number and hung up. I tried it again about 2 hours later and it was back to the "Error has occurred" crap and I just didn't feel like calling them again.
The fact that MS can't seem to get a simple website to work doesn't bode well with me. I originally was going to give my 360 to my nephew when it came back but now I am not sure. I don't want to pass on that headache to my brother so I may just keep it and give him my new HDMI Pro and I will pick myself up another when the new chips come out.
So what does it mean when the serial number on the service website changes, and there is a new tracking number which leads to a delivery to another person in a different state which happened before I even sent mine it...
The website is not exactly accurate. It did the same thing to me. I am curious. Does it show it is being delivered to someone in NC? If you logoff the site and then log back in, it will usually show your correct info. Once I was sure I had a new serial number and figured it was on the way, I called them to see what my tracking number really was. They did give me the correct info.

You're moments away from the RRoD. Might as well call for your coffin. :(
MeelaPo 09-10-07, 12:33 PM Well, the Canadian repair center received my 360 last week and today they changed the status from "Waiting for device" to "Received device". I was told that from the moment they actually get it at the repair center it will take about two weeks for me to get it back. Not sure why it takes so long in Canada because they aren't allowed to repair the console; only exchange it. Regardless, they got it on the 4th of September and the few supervisors I talked to said I should have it shipped out by next Monday.
jeepwrang3 09-10-07, 03:36 PM Now is the test, my tracking on UPS puts the coffin signed for at the Mcallen site. Nothing on xbox or my email yet telling me they have received it.
Bacon_67 09-10-07, 06:15 PM The service site/UPS tracking said they received mine a few days before they emailed me saying it had been received.
jeepwrang3 09-11-07, 08:45 AM Nothing yet on xbox.com, but UPS has the signiture at 1pm est on 9/10.
got my replacement last night, so far it's working fine.
i sent mine back mid-August, and the unit I received back had a manufacture date of 8-10.07. so even though it didn't come back new in a box, it's probable that they just gave me a new one that they opened up and tested (or maybe not even tested)? Been hearing about everyone getting refurbs but not sure that would have been enough time for them to get someone else's unit, refurbish it, and send it to me.

The sticker is the date of refurb, I believe. They wouldn't get yours and then choose someone's elses unit to refurbish... then they could just refurbish yours. They refurbish them as they get them so you just received a unit that someone sent before they got yours.

I'm not sure you're correct. Generally it's a date of manufacture. Mine came back with an older date than I sent them. I think it's "B" stock. I've had Dell do this also, it's stock that is assigned to the repair department it is labeled "Refurbished" even though it never saw a customer before.

well my guess is that if it was a refurb, it was barely used at all, pretty much looks brand new/flawless.
I nver got an email during the whole process. I used a Hotmail account for Live so you figure that MS would allow their own emails to go through. :p
I would just call teh 800 number and ask, you could die waiting for an email.

Heh. Sounds a /lot/ like the 360 I sent back to M$oft. I took great care of it.
Even still had the sticker over the IR reciever.
:( Can't wait to get an average gamer's sticky and stained 360 in return.

I was fearing one from a smokers house! I thought that would smell reeeeeal good when it warmed up! Lucky mine doesn't smell.
jeepwrang3 09-12-07, 08:45 PM So i called xbox, the guy had no understanding that the ups tracker was only to the repair site. He told me my 360 shipped out 9/11, it was received 9/10. I asked what tracker i could use to find it, he then said that it was received 9/10? Any time or other #'s to contact to get offices in Canada or the US so i can avoid speaking with incompetent reps?
Also, on xbox's console repair center. I noticed my SN had changed along with my Warranty went from no warranty to In Warranty? Any ideas if they gave me a new SN?
# Repair Status: Waiting for Device at Service Center
# Carrier Name: NULL
# Carrier Tracking Number: 20070912 Why do i have a Carrier Tracking # that looks like a date?
MeelaPo 09-13-07, 04:55 AM Any time or other #'s to contact to get offices in Canada or the US so i can avoid speaking with incompetent reps?
Call them, if you hear someone with an accent then hang up. Eventually you will get through to the North American site. From my experience if you call in the AM you usually get NA tech support.
jeepwrang3 09-13-07, 07:48 AM Well, I checked the reapir website this AM and all of the sudden the Serial is different.
The bad news is that the customer service is still borked and their new service site is useless since when they change your SN automatically, it short circuits your ability to determine that your service is completed and the new box on its way back.I'm in the same boat now, i havent called yet, but went on the repair site thismorning and got the No Pending Repair prompt :D Hopefully i get it back soon
I called and got a canadian rep. She said that it should be back to me in 7-10 days.

My coffin for my broken 360 arrived today. I will ship it out first thing tomorrow. I still can't get the site to link my console to my Windows Live ID. I still get the "Error has occurred Please call support" message. I think I read somewhere they were updating the support site soon. Maybe that will fix it.

MisterNJ 09-14-07, 09:32 AM I got my reimbursement check this week for the $104 I spent to get mine fixed.
pdawg17 09-14-07, 12:58 PM Well, I got my first RRoD last night...I powered it off and then on which fixed it but it's only a matter of time before it craps out on me...I bought it in December of last year (9 months ago)...I play maybe 2 hours per WEEK on average...can I ask for a coffin now or do I need to wait until it actually breaks completely?

My first one broke completely (locked on RROD). With my second one RROD and freezing was intermittent. I did not have to wait for the total shutdown. They sent me the coffin. Total process took about a month (August 2007) by the way.

Well I thought they would just take mine since it was still under full warranty but the guy gave me a bit of a hassle. I was getting RROD intermittently and like you if I turned it off and then back on it would work again. So I didn't make a big deal of it until it started doing strange things like the dashboard flashing on and off. He wouldn't agree to take it. So I just waited a little bit and called back and told them it was freezing up and RROD. The second guy took it right away. I think it just depends on the CSR you get.
danieloneil01 09-15-07, 11:48 AM My brother went to turn his on the other day and one red light came on and had an error code.. He looked it up and it said something about the PSU.. So then this morning he turned it on and got the RROD. He got it off Ebay awhile ago. Is his under the free warranty or will he have to pay? And whats the turn around from when you send the 360 in to getting it back?
I talked him out of trying to fix it himself based off a youtube video.. Open it up take out the mobo put foil on it and go in a circular motion with a hotgun..

Hey, timeframes change all the time. What happened 2 months ago doesn't apply to what they may be doing now. I would guess at this point they may be just giving out refurbs asap since the launch of Halo is coming.

Maybe, but the timeframe question does not need to be asked every 2 DAYS.
jeepwrang3 09-15-07, 02:45 PM Maybe, but the timeframe question does not need to be asked every 2 DAYS.true. FWIW, i was just told 7-10 days repair time, then add in the 6-8 days shipping.

I don't know. It is helpful, ya know. In my case. I hired an old Indian Chief to do a prayer dance around my Xbox and it may NOT have cured the RRoD but it was quite entertaining!

North York, Ontario.
When they receive it they will let it sit around for about 7 days before entering it into their computer as being "received".

That's got to be at least twice as helpful as the "improved" heatsinks. ;)

As long as the security sticker is still on there and it doesn't look like it has been tampered with, MS will fix it. He can register it online and do the repair request at the same time. I did the exact thing with one I picked up that all ready had the RROD and they fixed it, no problem. Took about a month, start to finish. August 2007. There are two security stickers. One under the faceplate on the main body to the right. And the other is just silver tape attached to the dvd-rom drive. It is on the left.
Turbokaw 09-18-07, 10:04 AM Finally got mine back took about a month and a half, including the f'up of not sending a coffin for a week. very quiet! actually had to put my ear up to the console to make sure fans were running, was worried they were not cooling it, but workd great have multiple days with 4+hours straight on COD4 beta, only one lock up but that could be beta. time to ebay it and get an HDMI one....
I sent my launch day unit in last week. I was told I should expect 3-4wks before getting it back.
It would lock up with a screen-door like grid pattern on the whole screen all the while emitting a screeching sound through the tv. It would then give me the 3rrod on restart. It started out random and a reboot would let me play but it finally got to the point where it would do it everytime game play started.
What was funny is when I took it to the UPS Store...the minute I walked through the door the lady behind the counter said "ahh another 360 eh?" Even in my small town enough of these things are crapping out that the shippers know just by the plain white box what's inside.:(
jeepwrang3 09-19-07, 09:50 PM So after the repair site has been down for about 2 days, it came back online tonight. The weird thing is now, my old Serial # from my previous repair, along with my most recent repair are showing?
And on the one i just sent it its currently stating:
* Device: Xbox360 Hardware
* Serial Number: **************
* Warranty Status: In Warranty
# Repair Status: No pending repair
crashmw 09-20-07, 01:34 PM YEAH! I get to join the club. Freezing followed by 3 red lights when trying to reboot. Bummer.
To make matters worse, I cannot locate my receipt (Costco).

I got the same response when I sent mine out last week.
Well I think I figured out why I would keep getting an error message on the service site. After the site came back up for repairs my 360 still wasn't listed on the site so I called them up and they told me I had to re-enter the info on the site. So I went to re-enter my info to the site when I got to the drop down for the State/Province my state wasn't even on the list(MD). What a bonehead error by MS.
So I called them and they entered it manually on their end. They said it can take up to 24 hours to show up so I will give them that long then call them back. This has really turned out to be more work then necessary.
How long does it usually take for MS to get a new repair order into their automated system? According to UPS they received my coffin last Monday(17th) yet their website shows "no pending repair"...and no the serial# hasn't changed either. ;)

When I did one (actually 2) of my 360s through Costco, the receipt went in and I kept the box. It was the quickest fix. Sorry Costco, I hope they dump it back on MS.
crashmw 09-20-07, 09:42 PM I got lucky! I found my receipt at work of all places. I used the membership through our workplace, so I guess I thought this was the best place to keep the receipt at the time.
Well, I go back tomorrow to try my luck. With no card at the moment since work is 65 miles away.
crashmw 09-21-07, 06:08 PM Well, all that I gotta say is Costco is amazing. I went back, and my wife had her sister's card, and they gave me my money back. Only question asked was...is it working? To which the obvious response was NO.
Anyway, the game was much more expensive 18 months ago, so I now have an extra $80 and a new console.
BTW -there were no other bundles than the 360Premier with extra controller...and I had to go to another store for that. I am wondering if the Halo-3 release has anything to do with that?
The Premier, or black one, was not that important to me since I have an older Sammy DLP that does not have HDMI (only DVI), and the HD is not an issue either since I do not DL much and I use the network for any music needs (Media Center).
danieloneil01 09-21-07, 07:45 PM Well my brother dropped off his 360 in the coffin at the UPS and they knew by the package what it was and said. 3 red rings and he replied nope all are red... I thought it was funny and sad..

Isn't 4 "Red Rings" a video error? Like a loose cable? 3 sections is the RRoD.

Easily resolved with an HDMI to DVI adapter from monoprice.com in the sposor link at the top of any page. Costs a grand total of about four whole dollars. Monoprice rocks.
My launch system came down with the RRoD on 8/25. The coffin showed up on 8/30.
I packed it up and shipped it out on 8/31. That was the Friday before Labor Day weekend, so they didn't receive it until 9/6. It took a few days before the status showed 'Received' on service.xbox.com. It changed several times from 'Received' to 'No Pending Repair' to 'Received'.
On 9/15 I received my one and only email from them saying they had received my Xbox 360 (9 days after it was delivered to them).
On 9/16 I noticed my status had changed to 'No Pending Repairs' and I had a new serial number. On 9/21 my replacement Xbox was delivered to me. It has a build date of 9/4/2007.
Long story short - repair time from service call to delivery 8/25 to 9/21.

Thanks for the update, oneother thing to reiterate to everyone. Do not waste your time trying to correspond with xbox via email. They more or less just send out generic answers, and refer you to making ph*******s.

Unfortunately...no.

Refurbs of old units don't include HDMI.
MeelaPo 09-22-07, 03:47 PM Called on August 21
Sent XBox 360 in on August 28
Repair center (Canada) received it on September 4
Console scanned into their computer on September 10
Received e-mail stating they received my Xbox360 on September 21
So it has been 4 weeks already since the initial call. I'm guessing this is going to take much longer than I had anticipated.
pdawg17 09-22-07, 06:42 PM Well mine finally died for good today...my first RRoD was a week ago and I hadn't seen it since until this morning...now it won't work at all...just in time for Halo 3...the bright side is by the time I get it back it will probably be on sale somewhere for $20 less...
As a side note, my computer died 3 days ago and wiped out both hard drives so I've had a rough week...technology sucks right now...

It was like that for me! My HDTV went "Blue Cloud" in May and was "lemoned".
Then the 360 went RRoD in July, then my PC fried it's MoBo a week later. 2 months of technology hell!
The good news was it was all under extended or new warranty.:confused:
Ok...I gave them over 24 hours and still I have no devices showing up on the service.xbox.com site. What the hell??? I just don't even feel like talking to some out sourced twit who is pretending to be from the US. So I will wait til Monday to call them.
I also checked and according to UPS it has yet to arrive to MS. If they loose it will I get a new one or will they just send me a refurbished one still? lol
ratpacker 09-22-07, 11:56 PM Well after a year and a half of no problems besides the occasional disc read error, my box went ring'o'death on me Sat. night, about 30 min. after updating it. Coincidence?

Ya I'm guessing coincidence. If you take something that breaks a lot you will soon find all kinds of weird correlations between breaking and all sorts of unrelated things.

Pluvious 09-23-07, 03:40 PM Wecome me to the club boys.. My 360 RRoD'd yesterday while I was playing Bioshock. I had it on pause and was talking on the phone. Oddly enough.. a reboot and its working fine now. (?!) Guess its going to fail soon and I won't be able to just reset it and play on anymore. Very weird my phone went dead the exact moment.. whats up with that??
Luckly I bought mine at Fry's and purchased their in store ESP. I will be able to swap out the unit for a new one off the shelf. WOOT.

JoeBloggz 09-23-07, 07:37 PM Well I did the x-clamp fix in April and my 360 has been running like a gem ever since....Until yesterday. I experienced a few lock ups(freeze) over the last couple days. Now every game I put in will start without problem and inevitably freeze during initial part of gameplay and sometimes even during setup screens. I"ve troubleshot everything I possibly can, cleared HDD cache, deleted applicable game files, disconnected everything, etc.
Now I got the 3RROD on only one occasion and then it changed to bottom right quadrant only red. which from what i have read also indicates hardware problem. Now after that one instance of RROD. The unit starts up fine but continues to freeze with every game.
Now I am expecting the 3RROD at any moment now. My concern is that after doing the x-clamp fix should I even try sending it back to MS?
MS has had my 360 for a week now and the status still shows "no pending repair". How long does it usually take for them to log it in and change status after they get it?
jeepwrang3 09-24-07, 09:45 AM It took me about 3 days Ken, then it went to No pending Repair, and now back to Device at Repair center.

Simply redo the Artic Silver paste. 5 minutes and you'll be back in business again.
JoeBloggz 09-24-07, 12:45 PM Simply redo the Artic Silver paste. 5 minutes and you'll be back in business again.
I will try that. I know this has been beaten to death, but this products reliablility is completely unacceptable and laughable. The two choices are keep sending back your system to MS every couple months and waiting forever to get it back. Or you have to pull the system apart every couple of months to reapply thermal paste. Both choices are NOT GOOD!:mad:
Is this an overheating problem? Since the fix I have noticed my system not running hot at all, actually the box is pretty cool to the touch even after hours of use. Before it was HOT to the touch! If so, what else can I do to protect against this happening again in the future?
spyder696969 09-24-07, 02:03 PM ...Since the fix I have noticed my system not running hot at all...what else can I do to protect against this happening again in the future?
Yep. The application of new thermal paste (in addition to the removal of the P.O.S. clamps) do wonders for the transfer of heat. Eventually, the new paste wears down in even the best of apps. You could also try shrouding the space under the DVD drive for airflow diversion or even installing another fan in the side of the casing...but I'm putting my money on a new paste app taking care of the issue.

Totally, the only thing i "Believe" is that i wasted time and energy reserving a game months ahead of time.
spyder696969 09-24-07, 05:04 PM What's the "Believe" marketing campain all about anyway? I've seen an ad, but it's just a bunch of little kiddie junk toys with Master Chief in the pile, and he moves his hand and head a teeny bit at the end. What am I missing?

Believe???? I think MS needs to make a Halo3 commercial where the MasterChief is in a major fubar fire fight with enemy's all around...when all of a sudden his gun stops working and when he looks down at the gun he sees the 3 red rings o'death on the guns display...now that I'd believe. :)

Yah but first it will show the confused MasterChief scratching his head(helmet actually) while he tries to decide whether or not to void the newly extended 3 year warranty on the gun by breaking the Microsoft sticker/seal.

jeepwrang3 09-24-07, 10:58 PM alrighty experts...Help me figure this out. I check the MS xbox repair site. My serial # has changed. It gives me a tracking # for FDE which i'm assuming is fedex. I go to the site and its saying overnight delivery expected by 3pm tomorrow. Only issue is Fedex is telling me that its shipping to Chesterfield, Michigan. I live in Maryland?
jeepwrang3 09-25-07, 02:23 PM My new Serial # changed to 91040****707 Does anyone have any experience with that SN lot and how new/refurbed it may be?
Pluvious 09-25-07, 07:55 PM That will be a new unit Jeepwrang.. congrats!
DanMacMan 09-25-07, 08:37 PM Bought my 360 in March 2006. Never had any problems with it. Ever. Until today. I get out of work, stoked. I go to Best Buy, pick up Halo 3. I come home. I go to turn on my 360. 3 Red Rings. I try all the tricks to get it fired up. Nothing. Needless to say, I am unhappy. Now I have to wait for the repair box and the long wait for a refurb (or will they send a new hdmi enabled box?). Looks like Halo 3 will have to wait even longer....

Same here. This is utterly ridiculous.
shauntig 09-25-07, 09:24 PM hey i got the three red lights with the code 0102. does anyone have any tips before i send it in. and how long do u think until i get it back if i ship it tommorow?
jelliott25 09-25-07, 10:35 PM My brother just called me. His wife had gone this morning and picked up his pre-ordered copy of Halo and so he's been at work all day just itching to get home. He emailed me to tell me to be sure to get my copy and meet him online tonight. So at 5:00 he calls me. He had gotten home, ripped the plastic off of the Halo box stuck it in the drive and........ RROD. I guess the 8 hour marathon h2 session he had yesterday was all the xbox could take. I can hear the anguished cries from all the way across town. Luckily he's a Costco guy so he's just a quick trip away from a new machine but dang...talk about timing.
And with this post, I join the legion of "Bought Halo today. Started the game and now I have RROD" users.
I'm actually kind of glad. I have had trouble reading my discs for months, but you have to pay for service if its not RROD. Now I can get it fixed under the MS warranty.
Born date 1-10-06
Something tells me the "got Halo today, RRoD tonight" is happening all over the world, tonight. Sadness rises as the Covenant was just within our grasp...:(
spyder696969 09-26-07, 12:21 AM Ahhh. A little bit of cleverly-placed code goes a looonnnnggg way to destroying a console.
+1
20 seconds into the Halo 3 intro my console gave up the ghost - sound and audio freeze. Reboot the box and my worst fears are realized.
At least the call to Microsoft was painless. Now to read through the last 10 pages of this thread to get a handle on the serial number game....
I will summarize. More than likely, once the box has been in the repair depot for a few days, you will notice that the Serial is different. This means they gave you a refurb 360 and slapped a new SN on the box with a build date of the day it was refurbed. It will probably have the new heat sink, but will otherwise be a standard Premium if that is what you sent, with no HDMI.
Mike LS 09-26-07, 12:07 PM How long from starting a repair ticket do you have to send your console back? I have a coffin on the way, but my console is working OK for the most part since flashing the rings the other night. I'd like to get as much Halo in as possible before it totally craps out, but don't want to mess the repair process up.
Someone told me 30 days, but I'm not sure if that's right or not.
30 days is about right. was almost exactly 30 days for me and the 4(!) people i know at work who have had to send theirs in too.
JoeBloggz 09-26-07, 12:55 PM Well had some free time last night and took my 360 apart again, cleaned off the chips, and applied a new coat of Arctic Silver 5 to the chips. Well TY, to spyder, IT WORKED.
The unit has been running without a hitch since then. Just in time for Halo 3.
Now I do still think its a PITA if I have to do this every 4-5 months or so. Now I guess I have no choice when I decided to open the unit the first time. But then again, the alternative of having to send the unit back to MS and wait 30 days and get a ill-fated refurb in return, is more of a PITA;)
pdawg17 09-26-07, 01:34 PM So if mine turns on correctly every fifth time or so will they still know it needs to be fixed? I'm afraid when they receive it and turn it on it will work and they won't know what to do with it...

You're welcome! There's no guarantee you'll need to do it every 4 months or so. The last time, you could have; put one too much paste, put on too little paste, had the paste slide in a wonky fashion off to one side slightly, not tightened the nuts quite enough or just a little too much, or even some other minor detail. The main thing is that you're up and running agian with a 10 minute repair...no waiting forever for MS to put a band-aid on your unit, just to have it fail again. Congrats! :)

My second one had sporadic RROD. They fixed it without any hassles (other than the obvious hassle of having to deal with the whole process -- for a second time -- in the first place).

Damn...I don't know what to do then...my coffin is on the way but I've taken good care of my 360 so I hate to send it in to get a piece of crap back...is adding AS5 almost guaranteed to work with the RRoD problem? I just hate to pop it open only to have it not fix the problem and now I've voided the warranty...
jeepwrang3 09-27-07, 08:19 AM My 360 should be back to me today or tomorrow http://www.concretefield.info/forum/Smileys/classic/crazy.gif

I'm not wondering how long it takes to get back.....I know that varies greatly, I'm more curious as to how long they keep your case open after you initially call. I think once they give you a reference # on the phone, you have X number of days to get the console back to them or they close the case. I think it's to keep people from keeping a coffin on hand just in case their console goes down.

Well, I'm afraid thats up to you! Either open it and have the problem in your hands from now on. Or Send it back(wait a month each time) and receive a band-aid unit rather than a fixed unit. Until MS corrects this design(not changing heatsinks, etc) we will have to deal with this for some time to come. The unit has been out nearly 2 years. Its gonna take a while for them to fix this correctly and have the failure rate go down. I have not seen a diminished number of failures since MS said "we have identified a few issues". That's a pretty blanket statement. WHAT ISSUES MS???
spyder696969 09-27-07, 12:09 PM Damn...I don't know what to do then...
What error code are you getting on 3ROD?
What DVD drive do you have?
Date of manufacture?
Add me to the list. Mine has been freezing during Stranglehold. It died, like many others as I was booting up while opening the packaging on Halo3.
I see from other posts there is a service.xbox.com site to check the status. Problem is, I have a different email accounts for my xbox live financial information (email1) and what's linked to my gamer tag (email2) to log in to the xbox website. When I ordered the coffin, I registered my 360 under email1. When I try to use that for service.xbox.com, it wants me to create a gamer tag, etc. If I use my email2 account, I can log in to my gamertag profile, but it tells me I have no registered devices. Anyone know if I can register my 360 under both email accounts?
jeepwrang3 09-27-07, 03:54 PM The repaired Xbox that MS was sending to the wrong address just showed as delivered. I tried to warn MS and Fedex but noone seemed to care that the 360 was going to a wrong address. As long as mine gets here via ups today i'm happy.

Wow. 0020 error code. Probably the easiest fix of all with a nearly guaranateed 100% success rate, right on par with the 1020 error code.

How? By doing the x-clamp fix?
Does anyone know if MS is automatically including a one month live card when you receive 'your' console back from repair, or is this something I have to ask for when I initially call?

Everyone gets it (well, at least, I did and I didn't ask for one).

Thanks. I just called and they confirmed that I will get one for the month of Live I'm missing out on. Also, the support rep indicated that he is personally on his 4th 360. Gotta love it when their own reps are telling customers this information. Further confirmation of how bad this hardware really is.
hey, am I supposed to get an email with tracking info when my coffin ships? Reading some earlier posts, it seems like I should, but I haven't received anything. I don't expect my coffin until today the earliest and most likely Monday, but I want to make sure it's been shipped. I called MS and the foreing guy kept giving me company lines. I am at work, so I didn't have time to go "up the ladder". He said I am in the system, but couldn't confirm if anythings been shipped. He said to wait to see if I get anything on Monday or Tuesday.
You may or may not get an email. SOme did, but I never have and I use a Hotmail account for Live so I would hope that MS's own emails would get through.
Call back and ask them for the tracking number, they will give it to you.
brhendricks 09-28-07, 11:45 AM My 360 went out earlier this month. I'm kinda glad because I work at a resort and a bunch of guys want to play. Naturally, most of them haven't said a word to me the whole time I've worked here so I'm going to put on some parental conrols and say bite me. When I get it repaired, I'm not going to let some bum play my system for free and then get it broken again.

I did earlier and got a foreigner who wasn't any help. Anyway see my post #967. I decided to try and register my 360 online using the email I use for xboxlive.com....It gave me an error, so I called to find out if I wasn't getting the email due to having 2 different email accounts on file (both hotmail). The girl I spoke to sounded like she was from the US. She game me the tracking number :), but the coffin is not sheduled to be delivered until Tues . She also mentioned I may or may not get emails...something to do with when UPS sends them information....whatever. She explained to me to use the "waybill" tracking number to track the return process from me to TX.
At least I know the coffin is on its way.

but, you can check it online, right? I can't do that because my box is not registered under the email I log in to xbox.com with. Hopefully they fix the site and let me register my 360 to that email account.
brhendricks 09-28-07, 12:53 PM They don't charge you for stuff other than the 3 red rings right? If I get billed I really don't want to pay for it, I'd rather buy a new system.

Late Tuesday night EST. I didn't expect the box until sometime between today and Tuesday, I was hoping it would be sooner though. :)

I am guessing doing the x clamp fix voids the warranty, so if I eff it up, I am SOOL. I am not very savy when it comes to computer parts. I saw the directions and they were confusing, but maybe they will make more sense if I have the box open and I see what the directions are talking about. I am thinking about it, but I might just send mine in.....at least this first time.

Not too worried. It's been shipped and I have the tracking number. I don't care when it comes as long as it's on the way.
ratpacker 09-28-07, 02:36 PM I got back from dropping the coffin off at the UPS store a couple of hours ago, and
not only did they immediately know what it was, they said it was the fourth one they've recieved today. BEFORE NOON. And I don't exactly live in a bustling metropolis.
Ok, what am i doing wrong. I wanted to check my error code. If I have my 360 laying horizontal (dvd on left side), I have red lights in all but the top right quadrant. I then hit the "sync" button and the DVD open button and it's just those 3 light only. What am I doing wrong to figure out the exact error?

Keep the controller synch button depressed the entire time you cycle through the sequence of eject button presses in the retrieval of the error code.
cwpomeroy 09-28-07, 11:21 PM I've had my box for 15 months. Tonight i open halo 3 - ready to play for the first time!
Put the cd in. turn on the box. it says it needs to update. I say yes. halo screen comes up and xbox locks up. I reboot. rrod.
I'm telling you guys - there is clearly something related to halo 3 frying these boxes.
I'm furious.

People said the exact same thing about Forza 2. It's just bad luck, sorry.
spyder696969 09-29-07, 12:52 AM Despite my complete indifference to the game, Halo 3 isn't responsible for killing 360s, at least in a direct manner. I will say it ramped up the fans in my 3 current units faster than any other game I've played yet, so indirectly, it is actually facilitating the death of a unit on its last legs.
robshdtv 09-29-07, 04:22 AM The updates though have a suspicious way of killing boxes. While it may be coincidence my launch box which never froze, 3 ringed after the Forza 2 update. I cleared the cache (which deletes the updates) and it worked fine for a few months. Eventually the box died and I did the X-clamp fix but why after the update and only 2 minutes after the box was on? I was not even in the game yet. I've seen it posted in other forums and since the updates are software (and we know MS's track records with their OS's) wouldn't it be safe to say that the possibility of updates causing certain 360s to crash is similar? (with actual hardware failure being taken in to account)
jeepwrang3 09-29-07, 07:37 AM I got my 360 back. The one month membership gold card comes attached to the 360. I had to track down my ups guy since i wasnt home to sign for it. Luckily my good friend is normally my ups guy. He wasnt on that route, but game me the cell of the ups guy who was. I called him, he was a gamer too. We talked for 5 minutes just about 360 in general. He said he noticed it was a 360 right away considering he delivers between 3-8 per day in his route alone.
Well Halo 3 just bricked my XBOX!!! Had min since the initial launch month. It has worked flawlessly since then, never had any trouble with any game ever. After I played halo 3 for the 1st time, the next time I started up my xbox it started acting weird, freezing on the halo launch screen, menus going wacky. Well today the 3 rings of death. This is crap. Not sure what is up with this game but having your biggest title to date cause so many issues is not good. Now no xbox for a month+

Sorry, dude, but it wasn't Halo 3. EVERY game and update has someone complaining that "such and such game" or "such and such update" broke my machine. NOPE, just rotten timing. Mine died as I was opening the Halo3 packaging while booting the machine up. It's just shoddy design and bad timing if you're a Halo fan like us. My coffin is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. I am going to my friends tonight to play on his machine. At least I can get some Halo 3 in. I feel for you dude. The whole process feels like an ETERNITY!!! :):(
