R.I.P 1/27/2007 to 02/07/2008 :(
My 360 froze for the first time during CoD4 last night. I just turned it off and went to bed as I had an early morning planned at the office.
Turned it on tonight after supper. Froze again, this time it didn't even make it to starting the game. Turned it off and back on again...RRoD'd. Error 0102
Called it into M$ at 9:02pm. Guy was decent and said he appreciated that I had disconnected and reconnected everything and even figured out the error code. He declared 'it had heart failure and was dead".
'coffin' on the way by Puro (I'm in Montreal). He said they'd ship out a replacement within 1 or 2 days from receiving the corps.
I'm seriously contemplating jumping ship to a PS3.
I've been wanting a BD player anyways.
Just updating my own post.
The empty 'coffin' arrived Monday. I dropped off the corps at a Puro depot yesterday afternoon. For whatever reason (they couldn't figure it out), it only got shipped late today and expected to arrive at the repair center tomorrow.
It's really sad to say, but I'm not expecting much. I know they'll replace it with a refurb and I guess I should be thankfull for that, but knowing it's just a matter of time until it'll also eventualy die from the same fate doesn't leave you with the warm fuzzies.:(
jon96cobra 02-14-08, 12:48 PM I got 3 red light last weekend code 0102. I'm still waiting for the shipping materials to arrive. How long do they take to ship them out? Just before this happened I was playing PGR4 when it froze during the game I turned off the system and waited to power it back up came back and 3 red lights.
You should receive the 'coffin' in a few days (3-5) after placing the service call.
benjamin-benjami 02-15-08, 04:25 PM so some free DLC is coming tomorrow (GH3) and it is only free for 2 days... since my xbox is with MS will they pay for it when i get it back???

Make sure your cable is on TV or HDTV in relation with what monitor you are using.
kernal05 02-16-08, 07:13 PM Everything should be working. I've been playing games since I was about 6 prety much every day of my life. I dont know of something is faulty with my cables or what. I have now tried it on 3 different tv's that I know it had worked on before. I hope there is not an issue with my xbox. I just keep getting sound and no picture on the screen it just stays black still or blue. Thanks for your help. If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate that. Thanks again
fahrenheit 02-16-08, 07:23 PM I hope there is not an issue with my xbox.
Unfortunately, that is likely the case.
Some people see graphic corruption, checkerboard effect, white blocks, black triangles etc and some just see a blank screen.
If this is the case, then its just a matter of time before the console goes complete RROD (hours/days moreso than weeks/months).
I suggest you play the unit as norm as best you can. Put in some DVD's, play some game that has some looping footage and regularly turn off and restart the unit after its cooled off for say 20 minutes. It should naturally reach the end sooner rather than later.
Of course if you are impatient, there is always the 'blanket of Justice'....
kernal05 02-17-08, 02:16 AM lol what is the blanket of justice? I dont want RROD b/c even thought I owned it for 8 months...the manufacture date is at just over a year which is complete ****. I can't watch DVD's or anything, I can't see anything. Guess ill have to shell out $140 to get it fixed. I can't belive they are screwing this many peeps over. They pry did it on purpose to make $$ off fixing them. Thanks for ur help man though. I appreciate it
fahrenheit 02-17-08, 02:19 AM The warranty was amended to 3 years for the RROD (but only the RROD).
Googling 'Towel' should help you with that blanket reference ;)
kernal05 02-17-08, 03:34 PM Ur a funny dude, man. I like to see where ur going with this! thanx again
lol what is the blanket of justice? I dont want RROD b/c even thought I owned it for 8 months...the manufacture date is at just over a year which is complete ****.
If you are the original owner and have owned it for 8 months, then it is still covered by the original warranty which is for 1 year from purchase. It does not matter when the unit was built. You may have to supply proof of when you paid for it.

I call bulls#!t on that supposed 16% failure rate. Remove that 1 and add a 9 and you'll come up with the real number of 360s that have died that have ACTUALLY BEEN SOLD and have been put to work for more than a few days. M$ keeps "fudging the numbers" by producing more and more units and counting the ones; on the production line, in their warehouses, and inside the walls of B&Ms against the totals of the repairs.
alpha21 02-20-08, 10:33 AM so my status of repair on live.xbox.com has changed, meaning they have finished it and have sent it back to me. but my serial number is nolonger registered on live. so I'm guessing this means that I'm getting a refurb (new serial #) back.
my question is, do I need to register that new serial #? if so, how does that affect the 3 year RRoD warrenty?
also, how do I track it, since live shows that I don't even have a 360 registered (owned) at the moment?

Yes, you're getting a Frankenstein. Yes, you register the new serial #. No idea how it affects your so-called "warantee." Track it with the reference number via phone.
alpha21 02-20-08, 12:26 PM thanks
what should I set the countdown of the Frankenstein to?
will it make it 6 months?
Cygnus311 02-20-08, 02:12 PM What's the best way to force the RRoD? Should I just put towels on it or will that cause some other error? I RRoD twice in one night about three weeks ago but it hasn't come back since although it has frozen a few times. I want to hurry up and get this over with so I can get my replacement and sell it and be done with this awful piece of equipment. 4 failures is plenty for me thanks.

Who knows? It might go 6 months. It might go 6 minutes. The only certainty is that it will die.
Well the turn around time is pretty good. They got mine on the 18th and they already shipped it as of today. Thats pretty good.

At least you know you won't be getting your same unit back. Whether that's good or bad depends entirely on the previous owner and the so-called "repairman" at M$.
Update: My X360 was received at the MS service center on Feb 14th. Wife called this morning that the courier just delivered the replacement. I'll check it out tonight.
I checked my online status of the repair and the serno has changed on the unit. Also interesting was that my unit was 14 months old, therefore out the 1yr warranty so it used to say "out of warranty" on my status.
Now it's changed, for warranty it says valid to 05/19/2008.
So I called support to find out what the deal was.
Here's what they told me.
Because they replaced the RROD'd unit with a 'refurb' they give you a 3 month full warranty even tho your original unit was past it's 1yr base warranty.
Anytime before the refurb's 3 month warranty is up you can call and purchase a 1 or 2 yr extended warranty at $29/$56 (can't remember the exact nbrs) which cover the unit for any type of failures during that period.
I got the one red ring where it lights up on the lower right corner of the power on button. I tried the towel trick and it is working again. I'm not sure how long this will last, but it did work.
jim tressler 02-21-08, 02:20 PM on these rrod returns do you keep your hard drive? mine started freezing up last night - no red rings yet, but it was hotter than hell.. so i fear rrod is not far behind. In the mean time I plan shooting some compressed air through it to get any dust off of the heatsinks and then raising it a few inches off the shelf and having a small desk fan blow air over it to see if that helps.. might for a few days / weeks / months.. otherwise just now waiting for the rrod! what pisses me off is that it has been in the same spot for over a year, plenty of airflow and now this!

Category 5 02-21-08, 03:41 PM The bad news - It took over a month to get my 360 replaced from first call. It died on the 14th of January and I got it back today, 21st of February.
I also sent them a DEAD SILENT Elite (at least during idle and movie playback) and got back a different one that has thoe droning, grinding, pulsating fans when they are moving slowly. During gameplay the drive completely obliterates the sound, but for movie playback this one is useless.
The good news - I sent in a regular Elite mfg. 07/07 and got back a Falcon mfgd in 10 of 07! So far I hadn't heard of anyone getting back a Falcon for a standard Elite. Now I just have to figure out a way to stop that droning fan noise.
Any suggestions?
spyder696969 02-21-08, 04:33 PM on these rrod returns do you keep your hard drive?...
Yes.

The bad news. You got a Frankenstein Elite with something other than the BenQ drive. Or, even worse, a bad BenQ drive just waiting to croak. Good luck with that.

It's a BenQ drive. What makes you think it's a bad drive waiting to croak?
my replacement 360 is to be delivered tomorrow.
It took just under 2 weeks from the call to order the shipping box.

Thats good to know. I tried the towel trick and it did work, but i only got a day out of it. I was thinking it would take a month to get it shipped to, fixed, then shipped back. I like 2 weeks alot more.:)
Since my xbox is still registered on xbox.com, does that mean that I'm getting the same one back ??

How long it takes depends on if they "fix" your original or send you a completely different "fixed" one. Other time factors include shipping distances, which facility it ends up at, and, in some cases, all the planets aligning perfectly in your favor.
jon96cobra 02-22-08, 10:09 AM I just send mine in for repair last week they are saying it takes about 10 to 15 days for repairs or replacement machines. The send you the boxes and that took them 5 days to send me the materials and it came to me 3day. The shipping label they give me was to ship it back Ground so mine took about a week to get to get to them in Texas. I'm just waiting to see how long it takes them to check it in since it arrive this morning at 7:56am.
In the mean time I got a 360 from Costco to use until mine returns. Its a falcon system. Not sure if the fans are different from my old one but they are definitely louder but it does seam to run cooler. I'm not sure if its the smaller chip or the fans running at a higher speed.
Has anyone sent in there 230w unit and gotten back a 175w unit? I'm curious to see how MS is handling that since you don't have to ship in your PSU.

I did. Check a few posts back. I sent an early 07 Zephyr Elite and got back a November 07 Falcon Elite.
Noisier, but cooler.
alpha21 02-22-08, 03:43 PM , and, in some cases, all the planets aligning perfectly in your favor.they didn't line up very well for me. looks like it won't be delivered today (still have no tracking). I'm sure President's Day on Monday didn't help things. another wasted weekend:mad:
Got my 360 back home today.
And trip the F out, it's still the same console!
I guess it was an easy repair?
(RROD error code was 0020)
All seems to be great, I'll be putting it through a few hours of long over due gaming in a bit!
Finally got a chance to hook up and test the 360 MS sent back to me. Unit looks and smells new with stickers in a few places like the IR receiver window.
Anyways, it's working fine but the fan seems a bit louder than the original one I had.
They also sent me a 1 Month Gold Xbox Live prepaid card back with the unit :)
All in all it took about 10 days from placing the call to getting the replacement back home.
Anyways, it's working fine but the fan seems a bit louder than the original one I had.
my replacement unit's quieter. just depends i suppose.
My 3rd 360 died last night. I have the rrod with the 0102 error code. This one lasted almost 2 years. My first 360 died in about a month from the launch date. My second one lasted about 3 months before dying. I'm glad Microsoft increased the warranty, but it's frustrating to lose another console. I would be interested to know the actual failure rate.

Anyone know how to open one of these without destroying the warranty sticker? I'd love to get at my damn buzzy fans and put some decent ones in there. It's my only gripe with my replacement.

tweezers and a blowdrier.
Category 5 02-25-08, 03:26 PM tweezers and a blowdrier.
Before I go too far and void my warranty, have you done this? I know the blow dryer works on other labels (done that) but I just want to be triple sure before I give it a go.
Also, anyone know what brand and size fans to look at? Funny thing is, mine are actually quiet except for the buzzing, which seems to even go away as the fans speed up. It will only be bothersome during movie playback (which I unfortunately use the 360 for a lot).
I have.. but my results were not as good as some others. A few small pieces were left on. You can always buy the 20.00 sticker on ebay.

Try putting some bigger rubber feet on the bottom first. You may be satisfied with the results. While it is no great feat getting the sticker part taken care of, you will be risking doing damage to the plastic body of the box by taking it apart. No reason to do that while under warranty. But if you insist, I have found these fans http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=8314 are very quiet. I have used them on a couple of consoles where the person wanted a quiet system and along with putting on the rubber feet, it helped a lot.
It is also possible the buzzing is being caused where the fan is attached inside to the metal chassis of the xbox. I have put silver aluminum duct tape on the inside where the fan clips onto the chassis for stability. It helps slightly with airflow and any rattling from that area. A cheap mod to try if you are desperate. Since your going to open it up anyway, you might as well read up on how other people have modded their box and see if you find anything that you think is handy. There is a mod out there to quiet down the dvd drive but I have never tried it. You should be able to google plenty of help. I have even added a 12 volt header on the motherboard before and added extra fans that way. But that does add noise and you don't want to do that.
Truth be told, the best solution to do is simply the x-clamp fix and not worry about the rest. But only with one that has no warranty left. This is the thread to ask the questions though as there are several people, including me, that have modded more than a couple of these consoles. I might have been able to make a living at it if MS didn't extend the warranty. :D
I thought Ebay took those warranty stickers off their site, but I see you can still get them. Still, with shipping, not a good deal unless you really screw up. Instead of buying the sticker, you would be better off selling the box you have now, and buy an Arcade. By the time you put the money in a new fan and sticker, the Arcade would be an inexpensive upgrade. Of course, this is based on if you were going to upgrade the fan and spend the money and then had to replace the sticker anyway. Based on what you would get for a working system on Ebay also. For a working 360/no HD with the power supply and cables, I sold for $150. That gives you a general idea, at least.
Ha. People think I'm nuts when I smell electronics, but it's far more telling than a visual inspection.
Wait a sec ! Are you saying not everyone smells their electronics as a way of checking that locked in freshness ?
There's nothing like the smell of fresh IC's, solder and resistors ! :p

Absolutely! Forget apple pie, these are the scents that I find pleasing. Wonder if I could put it in a can and call it "New Elecronics Smell" or something similar? :D

Just keep powering it up Mine did the same thing for 2 day and it finally died. Just follow the steps on the xbox.com support web site and it will finally give you a permanent red light. Mine was out of warranty and I called and they told me if it just freezing they would charge me to fix it.

the answer to that is 'yes'.
another way to figure it out is to flip a coin. you have about the same amount of chance of getting a 'good thing' or a 'bad thing'. actually, some will claim you should toss a d20 and anything above a '3' is 'bad thing'. :)

Coltaine79 03-01-08, 08:46 AM Hi,
I have a warranty question about the Xbox360, in case anyone here had such an experience:
In December 2007 I bought a 1-year extended warranty for my X360 (from Microsoft), about 3 weeks before my original 1-yr factory warranty expired. Shortly after I bought the service contract, the xbox.com site's Device Info section changed my warranty expiration date to read December 2008.
In mid-Feb 2008 the X360 died due to RROD. I called support and got it sent back (etc.) and during the call when I mentioned I had a service contract they said it didn't matter anyways since RRODs were covered for 3 years by the basic warranty.
Now, when I check the xbox.com "Support/Service" site, under Device Info - it says my warranty expires at the end of May 2008! It's like they removed my service contract and replaced it with a 3 month device replacement warranty! Anyone know what's going on?
thanks.
e_e_emarpea 03-01-08, 10:20 AM just to add more experiences...
sent for repair - 2/14/08
returned home - 2/28/08
not bad.
also, unless they are sending the original top plate w/ serial and mfr date i got my same console back. wish i woulda got an hdmi one. :(

Don't be so hard on yourself, benji. Try READING (if you can, given your history of failed attempts) the forum rules about etiquette.
YellowLight 03-04-08, 05:40 PM Mine RROD'd permanently last Monday, before then it had a habit of locking up progressively more frequently over a period of weeks. It would also only work standing up, lying down it would lock up within minutes. Suffered with this crap until it finally RROD'd so I can send it in. The box got here a week after they sent it (5 business days from TX), so I figure it's going to take a week to get it to TX and another to get it back to me on top of any repair time (probably a few days). So I'd be without it the better part of a month counting the week it's sat here waiting.
Since I already suffer withdrawal (mostly through Devil May Cry 4 and just started playing NHL 08 - awesome) I'm having amazon overnight me an Elite. I can put the old one in the bedroom and have it for a spare when the Elite croaks. I could have gotten an Arcade, but I figured if I'm going to throw money at it I might as well get an upgrade.
16% failure rate... my *ss.

Trevor78 03-07-08, 09:32 AM Hi everyone-
Mine just died last Wednesday evening. Made the call, and I guess the box is on its way. I just had a few questions, as I've been following this thread and others while emotionally preparing myself for this to happen (in the past couple weeks, games have been freezing, checkerboard effect, etc.).
First, when I turned on the box this morning, it came up without any problems- I'm worried that when I send it in, they'll turn it on, say "nothing is wrong," and just send it back. Would this happen?
Second, if they are just taking mine and sending me a refurbished box, would I be getting the exact same model, or would they be incorporating the boxes with the 65 nm chip (or whatever the "cooler" running model is supposed to be)?
Thanks so much for the help, everyone.

As a MSFT stock owner, I must thank you. Seriously.
As a consumer however, I worry that stories like this would make other manufacturers decide to ship shipty parts that fail with a half-life of 3 years, since all it does is boost sales/numbers. Not really 'voting with the pocketbook' when you reward MSFT with another Elite sale, for having sold you shifty parts to begin with, no?
I'm on my 3rd 360 now, but if it dies again, I'll UPS-Coffin it again and maybe Zelda:TP will get some play time. :D
Deinonych 03-11-08, 12:44 AM Actually, I'm wondering if you should just find a good post/response on this and stuff the link in your sig so that you can more quickly say "Read my sig" :D
Even better, write up a quick "What happens when I send my Xbox 360 to Microsoft" FAQ and sticky it at the top of this forum. :)

I'd rather teach a man to fish.
If people can't be bothered reading 10-20 posts, why should they take 5 whole seconds to read a signature or tackle the insurmountable task of clicking on a link? In fact, why not have me come to their house and pre-chew their food for them?

SamNTamara 03-11-08, 01:40 PM When the 1 year warranty expired on my release 360 I replaced the factory white case with a black case from decalgirl.com. Other than that I haven't modified the system, and the warranty sticker is still intact (though one corner is loose). This was prior to them extending the warrant on the RROD to 3 years. Last night it went belly up and is giving me the 3 red lights (0020).
Is it worth attempting to place it back in the white case and shipping to them or not, how strict are they on the tamper policy?

 An original question! Amazing.
If you're talking about the fact that you slapped a skin over the existing, original case, then you have no issue. If you physically swapped cases, then you're SOL, as the serials won't match. M$ is very particular about the tamper issue...even if it's just a paint job or whether you were simply curious as to what was inside.
0020 is a headache-creating, cringe-inducing, time-eating, gawd-awful code to have, along with 0021 and sometimes 0022. If you somehow manage to send it in, there is absolutely zero chance you'll get back your original unit.
Villanman 03-11-08, 06:58 PM I had error code 0021.
I got back my original unit.

I have my original case still, decalgirl sells replacement cases that are colored (black, mirrored, etc). I'll swap the guts back into my original case before I send it off. I don't care if I get the original back or not, just what my odds of them fixing it are. I was very careful about not messing up the seal but you can tell one corner was attempted to be peeled off.
The thing that ticks me off the most is I was using it to play a DVD for my daughter as my HTPC was down for maintenance. I asked my wife to swap Monsters Inc. with another movie and that was all she wrote. Guess that will teach me to let my wife touch anything electronic again...

After 300+ repairs in the past few months (my signature is a little bit exaggerated :)) I've only had two failures, both 0020 and 0021. Last month, I had a 0020 unit that I ultimately decided not to touch and sent it in to M$ just to personally see how their repair process is compared to the past. They sent me a completely different unit back. My friend's 0021 got replaced as well in the same week.
Maybe M$ is making a concerted effort to give people their originals back now that the holidays are over.
SirJohnFalstaff 03-12-08, 02:44 PM After 16 months I received my first RROD. I'm a moderate gamer, but after seeing the build date of this unit was October 10, 2005, I'm surprised the thing lasted as long as it did. I bought the extended warranty from Best Buy and took it in a few days ago. The gal there told me that Microsoft would probably just give me a new unit. I find that hard to believe, but we'll see what happens in a few weeks. Rather continently my wife has been wanting a 360 of her own. We decided to buy it then so not to be without one when the next Rainbow Six: Vegas comes out next week-- I per-ordered it a while back. The unit I picked out had a build date of January 10, 2008. Hopefully it'll live longer than my first one.
Mine just died today. Really sucks. My launch console died last year. Opened it up and done the x-clamp fix. Worked for a couple months and finally died completely. I opened it up literally 2 weeks before they announced the 3 year extended warranty. Man that sucked! Bought a new one on 7-26-2007 with a build date of 10-04-2006. And here it is 3-12-2008 and dead. 3 red lights. 100% failure rate imo. I keep coming back because of the games. But man. If the 3rd one dies. Thats it. I'm going with the PS3. I want one anyways. But, it would be nice to have both. Thank fully I have Wii to play while its in repair. Sure would be nice to get one back with hdmi. But, I know thats not happening.
This is crazy. I just played it right now for 2hrs straight. No problems. I played COD4 and GH3. Before it would freeze and then when I boot up the 3rd lower quad light would blink. Reboot freeze again. Then 3 red rings several times. I do have a intercooler ex on it. Took it off and still was giving me trouble. I let it set for a bit fired it up. 3 red lights. I kept on firing it up over and over again. With the intercooler off. And now. Well its working again! I already called and set up for a repair. I don't know what to do. This 360 is playing games with me! The intercooler really helped keeping the heat down. I took out those games without it on and jeebus! Those disks are hot hot. Enough to crack imo. I already know not to put them in the case with the center ring. As the middle can crack since the discs are so it. When they cool down. The pressure causes a crack.
Microsoft received my broken 360 over a week ago. I checked online for the repair status and it says "No pending repair". I expected to see something like "in repair" or "shipped back to customer". Does anybody know what the no pending repair message means?
jim tressler 03-12-08, 06:46 PM I reported my RROD on Feb 22 - Friday. It was giving me the 0102 Unknown error. Got the box on the following Wednesday. When the box arrived, the unit was no longer RROD - but it would freeze after 1 minute, then it would not fire up and simply turned the power supply red. I sent a note along with it about what had happened. Shipped back to them - they received it on Monday March 3. They fixed it Wednesday March 5 shipped it back to me on March 6 and I got it today. Seems to work so far. Same unit and they added a 1 month live card to the box. Ground shipping from cincinnati to texas is brutal if they ship out on a thursday or friday.

jon96cobra 03-13-08, 09:14 AM did they email you saying it was fixed? They received mine on Tuesday and I just checked the status tonight and it says device shipped back to customer.. I hope its not one of those - we didnt fix it deals..
thanks

No I never got an email or a call from anyone. I just kept checking for info on the xbox.com to see the updates.

I assume your device never disappeared from your registered list then? Mine disappeared yesterday or today, so I can't check repair status anymore! I assume this means they'll swap it out for a refurb. Hopefully they'll at least email me a tracking # when it gets sent out so I'll know when to expect it...
Trevor78 03-16-08, 12:22 PM I'm having an interesting experience with my personal repair process, and was wondering if anyone had this happened to them and whether you have any personal advice...
3/5- Console went RROD, called for the box.
3/11- Box never came, noticed online that my order status never changed from "order submitted." That is, it was never processed and the box was never sent. Called again, they apologized, resubmitted my order with new reference number.
3/15- Box never comes, noticed again that my online status never changed, called again. They once again apologize, started giving me a new reference number and was about to resubmit. I ask what the heck is going on, why my order status never changes to "waiting for device", etc. They can't tell me anything, except to resubmit the order. I ask how I can be assured this time that they will actually send me the box, they said they will "personally watch this one." I ask why the previous two orders were never processed, they said that if the system is "updating," the orders don't get processed. I had a hard time believing that would happen to me twice in a row. I asked them to overnight a box; they refused. I gave up and let them resubmit the order.
3/16- Still no status change, and they said to give it 24 hours. I'm at my wit's end. Should I call back again today, hold off tomorrow? How can I force them to send me the stupid box?
Thanks for the help....

It disappeared off the list but I new at that point they had received it. Once they send it out to you the tracking # will show up on the support site with the new serial #.
Slordak 03-17-08, 10:32 AM I'm a relatively serious gamer (over 20,000 Gamerscore without any sports games), and I was using a launch-day Xbox 360 up until yesterday without issue. I had assumed, based on statistics, that it was probably not going to fail. However, over the weekend I was having problems with "Culdcept Saga" unexpectedly locking up, causing me no end of frustration (since the game doesn't support mid-match saves other than for suspend/resume purposes). After cursing the title out, I put in "Call of Duty 4" and tried to play online and that was about it... The machine locked again, I rebooted it, and was then greeted with a frozen splash screen with the checkerboard pattern over it. Rebooted again, and the machine produced the three red rings.
On the phone with Microsoft, their diagnostic process is still ridiculous even after all this time. Considering the number of failures, they need to just accept the unit for repair and not play "21 Questions". The whole thing about having to plug the Xbox 360 directly into the wall (without using a power strip) is bull. Furthermore, the fact that the machine then doesn't show the three red rings since it's been cooling down between the time when it died and when one calls Microsoft means nothing. Still, I was eventually able to coax it to produce the three red rings a second time, particularly since the support guy seemed like he was going to deny my repair request if I couldn't. Hopefully the "coffin" should arrive soon and the somewhat intermittent nature of the failure won't cause any problems with the repair.
I have a question concerning console registration... I registered the console on the Xbox Live website way back in 2005. I hadn't checked this information since, but I can logon correctly and view my linked Gamertag, etc. etc., so everything seems coherent with the data links. However, when I went to view my registered machines prior to calling Microsoft, nothing showed up. When I tried to re-register my machine, I received some sort of "Problem processing your request" failure from the website, instructing me to call Microsoft. Does this mean the console registration has somehow slipped into a blackhole, registered to someone but not showing up associated with my Gamertag?
The console status screen they have is a mess. I to this day have yet to have my console ever show up. I tried calling them several times about it. They have even added my console and it fails to show up. They had me retry entering it after they redid the site and then my state was not even in the drop down menu for the address information to register my console. I just gave up trying.
Best thing for you to do is just call them every few days to find out the status cuz from what I hear even if you get your console to show up on the status page the status info is usually not very accurate.
The funny thing is that Sony's product registration is very seamless. I have 2 PS1s, 3 PS2s 2 PSPs and a PS3 and all were a piece of cake to register. I also only ever had to send in one for repair work and that was one of my PS2s that stopped reading disks. Total turn around time was 2 weeks all said and done. I don't add this to start a fan boy fight. It just amazes me the difference between the two companies or maybe I have just been extremely lucky with Sony. Who knows. (shrug)
Putting in the last repair order online for my 360. First time as well. Right at the submit order. I got an error that said to call customer service. Unreal. 3 red lights and then an error on there site. Can it get any worse? Anyways. I just sent in my non hdmi 360 today. I know I will not get a hdmi 360 and just another ticking time bomb. Basically my question is this. Will they be adding the same mobo and just adding the other heatsink connected to the gpu heatsink?

Getting a unit with HDMI doesn't mean it's not a bomb as well. I've fixed 12 HDMI units this week alone. 99.9% chance you get nothing but a new heatsink...which is like adding a new muffler to a car that overheats.
Guess I can only hope for the best. I really want the system to last. I was reading some disturbing news over on the xbox.com forums. UPS is so overwhelmed with returned 360s. The repair center is not accepting anymore and UPS is re-routing them for other delivery dates. Wonder where UPS is holding them then for MS. The stories I was reading on there is just insane. Thread after thread of nothing but horror stories and problems. I cannot believe a company can get away with this stuff. There are literally so many on there. One would think. Some one is paying all these people to say bad things about the console and MS service.

Or that the 360 truly has an inherent design flaw that merits all the negativity.
Schloob1 03-20-08, 11:10 AM Need some advice before I go calling customer service as that can get crazy. Yesterday morning I turn on the system real quick and headed upstairs to grab a bite to eat so i don't know what exactly transpired as far as the start-up is considered. I come back down and I have the 3 RROD, I was like crap:( So I turn the console off and was able to get it to re-boot up although I seem to be having an issue with getting my controller to synch-up but thankfully I also have a wired controller. The big issue though is I cannot get on Live. I went to my setting and it is not recognizing my wireless connection. It states when this happens to disconnect the wireless modem while the system is on then reconnect it and turn your system back on. What I did notice and I cannot recall what color it typically is but when Ireconnect
the wireless modem in the back the light on it is red. Is that the color it normally is, I cannot remember. So I turn off the console and reboot like it says to but this does nothing and I still have the same issue. Could the RROD that I got be a signal that my wireless modem is shot and I would have to buy a new one. Unfortuantely at the moment I do not have a ethernet cable long enough to test and make sure that i can connect to Live at all. I might be able to get out today and buy that and test that out. Just wondering if anyone else experienced an issue like this. Thanks everyone, otherwise still enjoying my gaming I just cannot get on Live:(
Well, finally got the RRoD today for good. They've been on and off again for the last month or two. I knew it was coming soon since my box was created on 24 Dec 2005. It's been a good friend but now it's got a coffin coming in 3-5 days and I'm going to keep track of all the dates. Here's with fingers crossed that I get a good replacement back.
Error 0022
ucsdsig 03-25-08, 02:26 PM I'm beyond frustrated now.
Pre-ordered a launch console at Costco. That console lasted 11 months before getting the RROD. No problem, since I purchased at Costco, just exchaged for a new console.
Console #2 lasted about a year before getting the RROD. Annoying, but exchanged the system for an Elite. Well, the Elite had a nice run, but a little over a month ago, RROD again. This time, Costco was out of stock of the 360s so I decided to try my luck with the Microsoft repair process...BIG MISTAKE!
Microsoft has had my console since Feb. 27. At this point, it is still in the "repair" process. When I called last week to get more information, all I was told was that the process was taking longer than normal and would have to be "escalated" to another department. Well, a week later, there is still no new information. To make matters worse, Costco has the Elite back in stock
Anyone else having issues with the repair process? I don't ever want to call the customer service number again...almost all the reps I have spoken to are absolutely clueless!
fdrebin 03-25-08, 07:55 PM Anyone else having issues with the repair process? I don't ever want to call the customer service number again...almost all the reps I have spoken to are absolutely clueless!
I'm beginning to wonder about their customer service too...
Two weeks ago I called them because my launch premium system finally gave up the ghost and red ringed on me. Called the 18004MYXBOX number spoke to "John" and he said he processed the repair request and gave me the reference number. Checked the website a week later after not receiving the box and it still said pending submission or whatever the first step is in the repair process. So got back on the phone and spoke to "Jack" who apologized and said there were complications and he'd reprocess the order immediately and rush it through for me. He gave me a new reference number and I thought all was well. Wrong. Check the website again today and now it says Repair Status: No pending repair
So, here I am 2 weeks later no closer to having it fixed. I almost fear sending it to them (if it ever became possible) because I'm certain they'd screw it up somehow and I'd never get it back. I'm beginning to wonder if I'd be better off just trying to fix it myself. Does the Xclamp repair solve most problems? I'm getting error code 0020, will that fix it?
95oRANGEcRUSH 03-25-08, 11:34 PM Oh, my turn to tell my story.
I shipped mine off on March 18th. Arrived at the Mcallen, Tx repair facility on the 21st. FedEx website says the item was delivered and signed for. Go to the repair page on the Xbox website and it says "still waiting for the device at the repair facility". Oh really? FedEx says it was delivered and Xbox says it wasn't.
Fast forward from the 21st until today and I receive an email from Microsoft saying they still have not received my console. If they do not receive it within 30 days, the repair order will be canceled. I'm like "WTF?!" and immediately call support. I spent 35 minutes on the phone (4 talking to a human, 31 on hold:mad:). Whatever his name was assured me everything was OK and that I can call back within 3-5 business days for a status update. At this point I don't know what to think.
I'm calling back Friday night to see if I can speak with an English-speaking person and get a straight answer.

For what it’s worth I received my repaired 360 today. The process was started on Saturday March 8th.
Coffin received March 12th.
Defective unit delivered to McAllen, TX March 13th.
Repaired March 24th.
Repaired unit received March 26th.

UPS in Europe IS delaying shipments, and has been for quite some time. UPS in the US is not...though there have been rampant issues with M$'s repair process lately.
On a side note. Are you non hdmi owners getting sent back your console or refurbed one with the added extra gpu heatsink?

Yes...not that it matters whatsoever in regard to actually fixing the problem.
got my 360 back, its brand new.. manufacture date is 2-15-08
also its not hdmi which i find weird due to the manf date
Scott_lb 03-27-08, 07:12 PM blazin - that's because your console isn't brand new - only the sticker is. All new 360's have HDMI. I received the same type of console as you did after my own 360 died - new sticker with a recent "birthdate" but no HDMI.
its new, the dvd drive date is feb 2008 as well
jon96cobra 03-28-08, 09:04 AM I'm sure they are replacing any part in them that might go bad. I know my friend had a DVD player problem with his and still hasn't gotten the RROD. They sent him a replacement system too. I'm sure they are all refurbished units.

Frankenstein unit.
Mine has been repaired and on its way back. It is the same unit since I have the same serial number. I say its repaired. But, I would not be surprised if they just sent it back and said nothing was wrong with it. Way to fast of a turn a round time.

Wow, just wow. The order still has not gone through. According to them the order is in the computer but just not going through for some reason (awesome excuse) and I can keep waiting to see if it does finally get sent out. So needless to say I asked for a supervisor who tried to claim that I had only submitted the request on the 26th. Luckily for me I had written down every conversation, person spoken to, and previous reference number and once I started reading those back to her they magically appeared in her computer and she had the full record. So, now she's forwarding my order to a "specialist" that has to call me back. So I get to wait from 11-1 tomorrow for this person to call me just so I can get a freakin box!
SamNTamara 03-29-08, 01:48 PM I have my original case still, decalgirl sells replacement cases that are colored (black, mirrored, etc).
Got mine back two days ago. Completely new (different) unit, everything is marked with a February 2008 manufacture date. Guess they aren't too strict on the no-tamper policy.
chapsrl 03-29-08, 05:24 PM I"m currently waiting on my 5th replacement/repair within 2 yrs and as long as Microsoft keeps sending us all the refurbed frankensteined consoles i will likely be seeing a 6th or 7th before my 3yr warranty is up..
I have sent emails to corporate and have dealt with "corp customer care" and have gotten nowhere.
I'm on day 5 and still no coffin. I'm giving them one more hour (UPS runs late here) and then I'm calling.
Slordak 03-31-08, 01:40 PM I put in a repair order on 3/16, received the "coffin" on 3/18, Microsoft told me they received my console on 3/24, and announced that they were shipping it back to me following repair on 3/25 [...]
I suppose everyone's experiences will vary, but I didn't see any delays or unexpected "holds". Everything was very speedy; UPS delivered my repaired unit on 3/27, so that's a total of 11 days from the time I first called, including 3 non-business days and Good Friday. The shipping from Texas to Chicago was 2 days in both cases, and the repair itself took 1 day.
The unit I received back was the exact same unit I shipped; an original launch day Xbox 360 without HDMI.
ucsdsig 03-31-08, 04:15 PM Microsoft has had my Elite since 2/27/08. Weeks went by with no updates and numerous conversations with clueless phone reps.
Finally got an update that my Elite was repaired and shipped on 3/30. Disappointed with the repair time, but more with the lack of communication and information on Microsoft's end.
Its finally back on its way home and suppose to be here on Friday.
Well, it finally happened to me as well

Is there anything I can do besides sending it back to Microsoft
I would hate to have to wait weeks to get it back
Sandman209 04-03-08, 10:03 AM I bought a XBOX 360 Elite in Sept 2007 and it got the RROD nearly 5 weeks later in Oct. (just past Best Buy's 30 day return policy). Luckily, I bought the "product replacement plan" but Best Buy has been out of stock of Elites. Yesterday I saw a ton of Elites in a Best Buy near me so I think I'll be replacing it finally! Is there any info I need to look for on individual boxes still or do you think that these new Elites are all okay?
It's funny that I purchased the $80 Best Buy replacement plan because I knew if I got the RROD I could just walk in to a Best Buy and get a new one right there. But, I've been waiting 7 months for them to get Elites in stock! I thought about just sending it in to Microsoft but then why did I buy that replacement plan?! I asked once to exhchange it for the Pro or arcade with store credit but they said they don't that; I have to exchange it for the exact same product.

Remove the X-Clamps and be playing again in under an hour.

All 360s are created equal until the X-Clamp design is removed.
Just got mine back a few mins ago. I found that it runs cooler and is more quiet. They did add the extra heat sink. Its so quiet and cool now. I am not sure if I want to sell it now. But, it is a MS repair. So, I figure its a ticking time bomb. Its also a non hdmi 360.

SkltLqr 04-04-08, 11:56 PM Sept. '06 unit just gave the RROD. Guess I won't be getting owned by twelve-year-olds on Live for a while.
McAllen, TX, is a border town, so I suspect the actual repair work is done in a maquiladora in Reynosa.
While I'd really like HDMI, I'd be happy with a quiet and cool(er) refurb.
A question: When I bought my 360 in Nov. '06, I bought a three-year extended warranty plan from Target. Has anyone used this warranty? Would I be better off with the Target warranty vs. having Microsoft repair the unit?
EDIT: Answering my own question, Target says that since MSFT extended their warranty to three years, that I am to go thru them. In other words, the Target warranty is completely worthless. Good thing it was only ~$29.
TheDigger 04-08-08, 02:16 PM Just called for the 5th time to find out about the status (I call almost everyday b/c I'm going through withdrawal). I was told the Elite's take about a month to get back because they don't have the parts at the return center. Are the parts different for an Elite than the other models (besides having HDMI)? Very frustrating.

All 360 units are exactly the same, save for; the HDMI port, the 20/120GB hard drive, number of heatsinks, brand of DVD drive, and obviously, case colors. The excuse they gave is pretty weak, considering they should have plenty of all those parts in stock.*
*Unless, of course, you got the magical, mythical, mysterious Talon mobo and 65 picometer chips that are the answer to everyone's prayers across the galaxy because they never, ever, under any circumstances, go bad. Oh, wait...

TheDigger 04-11-08, 10:51 AM So I received my refurbished Elite back from Microsoft yesterday. As you can imagine I'm extremely excited b/c I haven't been able to play for 3 weeks. So I plug it in and what do I get? The frigging RROD. Unbelievable. They shipped me a dead Xbox. I'm miserable.
bugman72 04-11-08, 12:05 PM Welcome to the world of M$ Customer Service. Sorry to hear about your horrible experience. Call them back and try to get them to send you a Falcon unit. I don't know if this is actually possible, but it's the closest thing you will find to potentially alleviate your headache and worry. Of course, the Falcons aren't without flaws as well...just not at the same percentage of failure...yet.
oo7evan 04-12-08, 05:43 PM Sigh, my Sept '06 built 360 has went RROD on me. Funny, because it had never locked up before today, then randomly as I was walking through Downpour, looking for some fools to cap with my AK74u, it locked up and went red ring on reboot. Already called and the 'coffin' is on the way. Any chances I can get a 360 back before April 29? That date is important for some reason.
jspappe 04-13-08, 05:56 PM 007evan,
My launch day 360 went RROD last Sunday and the CSR I talked to estimated that the repair turn around would be about 10 business days plus shipping time. So I suppose it is possible you will get yours back by the 29th, depending on where you live, whether the repair takes less than 10 business days and how lucky you are. FYI, The service center is in Mesquite, Texas.
To give you and idea of what to expect here is the process as I have experienced so far:
I submitted my request for service through xbox.com on the 6th, received the coffin on Wednesday and shipped out my 360 the same day. I live in Seattle and UPS estimates that my 360 will arrive in Mesquite on the 15th. assuming a 10 business day repair time I am guessing I probably won't get mine back until the beginning of May.
Good luck dude
oktoberrust11 04-14-08, 12:00 PM Hi guys -
I've had my 360 for about 2 years with no probs. A couple of days ago, I get the dreaded RROD. So, I turned it off, waited a minute, turned it back on, and everything's fine. It's now done that the last 3 times I've played, all with the same solution. Is there anything I should be doing to help prevent a permanent shut-down? Or am I eventually going to be screwed?
Thanks,
Matt
Or am I eventually going to be screwed?
that seems true for all 360s. But in your specific case. Mine did that for a week and then had a permanent RRoD. I blame Halo3.
Right now, my 360 is resting well, since I get motion sick after playing 30 minutes of Half Life, so it doesn't stay on much.

Great. I'll blame MLB 2K8 if/when it happens.
It's funny you mention Half Life and motion sickness. I've played tons of FPS's, and HL2 on the Orange Box is the only one that's made me queasy. I don't know what it is. Especially when I had to climb on the steel under that bridge, and you couldn't see the ground below you were up so high....sheesh....:(

totally! to be fair, I do get motion sick after around 6 hours of Halo3... though maybe that's just dehydration. :)

It will likely get worse, and it certainly won't get any better over time. If you can produce the "red ring of death" twice in a given sitting, you might as well call Microsoft and request a coffin...

Yea, yesterday I had two RROD's before it turned on the 3rd time. I'll start the process........and just before GTA IV too........:(
RafaelSmith 04-15-08, 01:54 PM Well after just under 3 years of working flawlessly...I experienced my first RROD last night...put in my copy of Viking....game froze and screen was pixilated....shut XBOX 360 off....waited a few seconds....turned in on and was greeted with RROD....unplugged everything....power, AV, cat5, USB, etc...waited a few minutes...rehooked everything turned it on and played Viking, Rockband continuously all night..no futher RROD.
So it seems perhaps mine has started down the path of eventual permanent death :(
Gonna be tough if it does die...life without my 360 games...and specifically Rockband will be rough.
oo7evan 04-17-08, 06:11 PM 4-12-08 Got RROD. Called CS and started repair process.
4-16-08 received coffin. Packed up 360 and dropped off at UPS same day.
Now the agonizing wait. How much fun can a guy have with a copy of GTA4 without a 360? i suppose I can study the map 4,000 times.
I have a question. I got the RROD last night from my launch day unit ( Nov 05 ), which I bought at Costco for $500 + . Called customer support and they are sending a box. Should I just try to return the unit to Costco? What do you think? PS. They told me they only wanted the unit back, no power aupply, HDD, or any other accessories.
TheDigger 04-23-08, 10:02 AM I would definitely return it to Costco. A much less painful process.

Unfortunately, got the RROD last week and finally got time now to actually do something about it. Tried doing the code check and got '0102'.
So I blasted through the vents with a can of compressed air. Ejected the tray and tried blasting through there as well, but still got the RROD.
Is there a way to open up the 360 to get inside? I don't see any screws holding the housing together. I'd like to try using the compressed air on the inside.

Oh. sorry... that's right, the mnemonic was to call "1800 for my xbox"
5x360=1800 and 5x is how many times you'll have to replace it over it's lifecycle. If you're lucky. :D
SkltLqr 04-25-08, 04:13 PM Got mine back yesterday. I hooked up the HDD and it updated and signed me into Live.
However, when I try the "resume solo game" option in Halo3, it seems to just do nothing (it plays the somber acapella male voice thing and slowly draws the big halo symbol) for a while and then goes back to the main option screen.
It seems like it can't find my saved game, even though the HDD is hooked up.
Any advice?

Seriously though, what about other games? Any similar issues to help determine a solution?

I tried a different title and didn't have a problem loading a saved game.
I also noticed that in Halo3 it doesn't even give me the option of starting a new solo game...

OK, I have somewhat of a worharound solution to this problem should anyone later find this thread by way of a search.
I scrutinized the disc under a couple different light sources and could only detect some slight surface wear - nothing which would cause any sort of read error.
I also reset the clock on the 360, which I have read can sometimes cause problems of this sort (i.e., clock is off after repair). No effect.
Finally, I went into Campaign mode and selected the last mission I was able to save on before the dreaded RROD. It cautioned me that I would lose my saved game. I figured it was not a big deal as my saved game was essentially inaccessible anyway. I started the mission and immediately chose "save and quit". I left the Campaign area and went back to the main screen. I selected "Resume Solo Game" and it brought me to the beginning of the mission I selected in Campaign.
Good enough. I mostly just want to finish up Halo3 so I can move on to COD4 and beyond (I am a serial monogamist when it comes to gaming).
gotskunk 04-28-08, 03:28 PM I posted before on this thread about my rrod and I have this same post on another forum as well.
I had the E74 1022 problem and fixed it with the x-clamp and heat gun trick. But now I have created a new problem and a rather annoying one. Now the xbox bots up fine and no video problems but now the audio is out of whack. basically I am getting a buzzing noise kinda like the buzzing sound of an out of frequency radio station. The buzzing is only affected by bright colors. The brighter the colors on the screen the louder the noise gets. Just an example when playing COD4, if a flashbang blows up in my face the sound is very loud and in contrast if the screen is black you can barely hear it.
Now I havent ruled out using a different A/V cable beacuse I havent had a chance to get another one to try. The first fix I used omn my system was the x-clamp and It would only work for about a week or a few days at a time. After reading this thread I used the heat gun and it wasn't til after I used this method that I started having the audio problems.
I am wondering what component I may have heated too much and if anyone else has had this kind of problem
Thanks
ok forget this post. I'm a dumbass. I had the the one of the hd cables in the red slot instead of the normal component cable. Everything's plugged in correctly now and it works great. So X-clamp and heat gun did the trick for my E74.
Thanks for the great info everyone

dlconner 04-30-08, 01:18 AM I knew buying GTA-IV was a bad omen. I picked it up on my way home from work tonight, waited patiently until the kids went to bed and we were done watching a movie, then turned on my xbox360 to give it a go...low and behold 3 RROD with error code 0020. Did some debugging that did not work, called MS, who further debugged it a little, and now the coffin is on the way. Guess GTA-IV and finishing my 3rd prestige in COD4 is going to have to wait a month now .
oktoberrust11 04-30-08, 07:34 AM Ok, my coffin is on it's way, but I tried to diagnose the error code last night. I did it several times, and from what I could tell, I get "0000". What does this mean? I saw a post that said 4 blinking lights means something wrong with the A/V cable - I tried cleaning it off, but nothing. Should I try to go back to the component cable? (I'm using VGA now).
jspappe 04-30-08, 11:29 AM I received my 360 back from repair for RROD on the 24th. The actual repair only took one day. The total turnaround time was 18 days of which the shipping took pretty much all of the time. MS also offered warranty extension plans for one year at $25 and two years for $50. They are an extension of the 90 warranty that the box has after repair rather than overlapping which is cool. I went with a two year, I figure it's cheap insurance, plus it covers the power supply, hard drive and controller.

If you don't have exactly three red segments illuminated, you don't have the "red ring of death". If all four segments flash, usually your A/V cable is disconnected or loose in the back of the unit. You can try unplugging it and reseating it, or yes, you can try a different cable.

Well I get the 3 red rings when I first turn it on. Then, when I go to diagnostics mode, it just continuously flashes the 4 rings. I guess it's moot now, i dropped it off at the UPS store about an hour ago..:o
LexInVA 05-01-08, 11:13 PM Looks like my 360 has finally reached it's end of life. GPU seems to be burned out or damaged from heat. :( August and a new 360 chipset can't come quickly enough.
dlconner 05-03-08, 10:37 PM It is always a great sign when I walk into the UPS Store and the Lady at the counter says "Dropping off the XBOX 360 huh?". I laughed and talked with her a bit, and she said she sees at least 30-40 of these things a week. GG MS...great quality control you have there...Anyways, out today and hopefully back soon. Hope they do it right so I don't have to do this again.
How is it not possible that there hasn't been a congressional inquiry into this yet? The quality control is ABYSMAL.
I've owned mine for 1.5 years and got the RROD on 5/6. I called that day and box arrived 5/9. I mailed 5/10, but it is a Sat. and UPS ground won't go out until Mon. My code was 0102. Hopefully doesn't take long. I was getting addicted to Oblivion.
If I buy a new Elite, is there still the same risk of failure?

Has any one sent there falcon in recently and did MS ask for your power supply as well?
dlconner 05-12-08, 11:34 AM Has any one sent there falcon in recently and did MS ask for your power supply as well?
If I had a falcon and they wanted the Power supply, I would be suspicious that they were going to give me a non-falcon refurb in return...just me though.
The reason I asked. I have a buddy that has a falcon (175w) it died a few days ago. He is battling it out with MS right now. They want him to send in his power supply as well. He is refusing to do so. There is nothing wrong with the supply and like you said. He is worried they will pull a fast one on him. Which is happening right now from what I have read on forums. They are refusing warranty right now because he will not send in the power supply. Horrible.

spyder696969 05-12-08, 02:57 PM The question is...what's the difference between a dead Falcon and a dead non-Falcon?
Dead is dead.
dlconner 05-12-08, 09:22 PM The question is...what's the difference between a dead Falcon and a dead non-Falcon?
Dead is dead.
The whole point is he is afraid he is going to get a refurb on the old technology that is not a falcon and will run hotter. Very valid worry. The old processors, like mine, have a 20%+ failure rate, falcons are unestablished yet, (and hopefully better).

spyder696969 05-13-08, 03:43 PM As I've stated hundreds of times here before, ALL 360s are doomed to the same fate until the X-Clamps are permanently removed.
Heat, in relation to the 360's design, is NOT a primary cause of, rather, it is a secondary and otherwise mildly influential facilitator in, the inevitable process of RROD.

Sorry, didn't browse the 55 pages to find that as I don't really have the time to do so. With that being said, do you have any links on the x-clamps and what is causing them to fail? Also, if that is the failure, do they "upgrade" your xbox on repair with something other than x-clamps, or do they just "fix" the x-clamps?
Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

There are literally millions of places you can look that can describe the ridiculously assinine design of these POS parts. As to the "repair" that M$ does, it's certainly no upgrade, as it's been clearly documented that they simply slap some old parts together from a gaggle of dead units, thus creating a bandaged Frankenstein 360 that they send it back to you in hopes that it will last a few months until the "warranty" runs out.

LoL nice...good thing my warranty runs until ~2011 I guess. Love the XBOX360 platform, hate the hardware.
dlconner 05-15-08, 10:12 AM Update:
5-3-08 : Dropped XBOX off at UPS
5-7-08 : XBOX Left town via ups
5-9-08 : XBOX hit MS in Texas
5-10-08 : XBOX repaired and shipped out via UPS

12 day turn time is not bad at all. Now I just hope the darn thing fires up and works well. It died on the day GTA-4 released, and I have not even been able to fire it up since day one. Have mass rampages to go on in Liberty City!

For the love of God M$....so I get my xbox hooked up last night, turn it on, and instantly the fan in the case starts smacking something. It sounds like someone took a poker card and pinned it against bicycle wheel spokes. Easily heard on the other side of the house. So I called M$ again, and now another box is on the way. Not sure if the fan was put back too close to something and its smacking up against it, or if there is a loose wire/component that is hanging in the way. None the less, extremely annoying/frustrating. And what's M$'s resolution...to fix it (they darn well better for free) + 1 month of XBOX live free....whoohoo!:mad::mad:
Had my Elite for about a year (replaced a premium which also RRODed) and got my first RROD yesterday trying to play Gears. Booted up on the next try but now I'm waiting for it to finally go poof then back for an exchange.
throwback559 05-20-08, 03:11 AM damn mine went out again
RROD
I can't win - would suggest not having your 360 RROD on a Friday ( :) ) :
5-3-08 : RROD, called MSFT
5-8-08 : Coffin arrived
5-10-08: Xbox dropped off
5-12-08: XBOX Left town via ups
5-16-08 : XBOX hit MS in Texas
5-17-08 : XBOX repaired and "billing information received"
...still waiting
If it's not back in time for the 3 day weekend, I'm going to be livid!!!

Mine will be going out AGAIN just in time for the 3day weekend. Wish they would have repaired it correctly the first time :( .
SkltLqr 05-20-08, 08:19 PM Hancox,
If it looks like it's going to be delivered before the 3-day weekend, do whatever you can to ensure that someone is at your address to sign for it. They will not leave it.
Just FYI.
It won't be a problem, it appears

Radio Shack, if you need it today. Much cheaper online.
DJMoore22 05-21-08, 02:39 PM My 360 froze up several times Monday night and I got 3 red lights at on point. I disconnected everything included the harddrive and let is sit overnight. I tried it again last night and it worked fine. I'm guessing it is the beginning of the end though. Anyway, since I bought mine in December of '04 I think I'm just going to try to fix it myself when it goes completely dead.
Remove the X-Clamps and be playing again in under an hour.
What is the "X-Clamp"?
Let me add that this thread is invaluable!
I got the RROD yesterday and thought I would have to throw against the wall ;) .
After reading this thread, diagnosed problem and all green again!
Thanks to all!
What did you do to fix it?
spyder696969 05-24-08, 03:30 PM What is the "X-Clamp"?
Here's a "few."
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/spyderswebphotos/xclamps2.jpg
And here's what I typically do in a day. (Note how the X-Clamps are joining hands around their dead brothers. ;))

What method do you use to remove the x-clamp?
I googled it and saw several tutorials on how to do it, but I want to know the best way to do it.
Is solving the RROD issue really as simple as removing the x-clamp?

Lawdawg's method, though I've made quite a few small revisions of my own from that template over time.

Yes, if done correctly and with the right tools and patience.

That's the method I'm reading over right now
I just stopped by Lowe's and picked up the tools needed
But a lot of this seems over my head
I think I may have to take my Xbox to a guy I know and see if he can do it
andy4theherd 05-26-08, 02:45 PM i just got my first RRoD this morning. i have had my system since '05 (i think). i registered it on MS's website and under warranty info it says "Out of Warranty". does this info include the 3 year extension? i am thinking about just buying a new box to get hdmi. would MS offer any type of credit or discount if i just bought a new one vs sending it back to them?
last question; if i purchased the "arcade" version, could i just use the 20gig HD from my old box? would i still have all my content?
thnx
andy4theherd 05-26-08, 02:57 PM well, i had unplugged all the cables from the xbox and let it sit for a while. i went back and hooked everything up and its working fine now. does this mean it is only a matter of time before she's down for the count?
i also wonder if my new onkyo 606 is the culprit. i just got it this week. i have never had any problems with my 360 until today. i have 6 shelf rack with the 606 on the bottom. i had an onkyo 503 until thursday.

Yes it is only a matter of time before your launch console dies. Yes that includes the 3 year RODD. Yes buy a new 360 with HDMI. No MS does not have any upgrade discount or trade in program. Yes you can use your 20Gb HDD on the Arcade 360. Currently if you do use the 20Gb HDD only the GamerTag that purchased the content can use it while online. Though sometime this June MS will release a tool on xbox.com so that you can reassign all your content to a new console. No I don't think your 606 had anything to do with it.
On a side note...I would get a new HDMI console and get your current one fixed as a backup. Since it is out of warranty I would get someone like spyder696969 to fix it rather than sending it to MS.
andy4theherd 05-26-08, 05:24 PM i found my recpt and i got the system in april '06. looks like i still have until april '09 per MS's 3 year extension warranty. if the lights come on again, i'll send it off. i'll probably get an arcade version and try and sell the refurb if/when it dies.

Good move. Your Onkyo is absolutely, positively, 100% NOT to blame for anything that's happened to your 360 in any way, shape, or form.*
*Neither is plugging it into a surge protector, or any other ridiculously assinine story someone randomly comes up with to elude responsibilty or alleviate very real concerns or justified fears...regardless of crative "gems" such as this doozy: http://www.neoseeker.com/news/6889-microsoft-says-its-bad-surge-protectors-killing-xbox-360s-/

I used Lawdawg's method over the weekend and so far everything is working wonderfully. Do you mind giving a little more detail on your small revisions? I'm just curious.

I use a different bolt, for starters. I get a much, much better feel for (Lowe's part #138240) hex-cap nuts than the flathead screws in regard to feeling out how much torque is required. I also have omitted 4 of the metal washers on some more badly warped units, as those needed an extra "nudge" in the reballing process. (Not recommended unless absolutely needed, btw.) For cleaning the chips, Zippo lighter fluid is light years ahead of isopropyl alcohol and can save you a bucketload of time and effort.
There are other things, but it's best not to divert too far from the norm unless you've got a hundred or more repairs under your belt and feel entirely comfortable with stepping out into the wild blue yonder.
HDTV_ME 05-29-08, 04:33 PM I searched the thread but didn't find a similar situation, I bought my Xbox, about 13 months ago, so I think it would be under the fairly large warranty Microsoft has laid out, but once registered Microsoft is saying it is already out of Warranty:
# Device: Xbox360 Hardware
# Serial Number: ************
# Warranty Status: Out of Warranty
# Warranty Type: Standard
# Warranty Start:
# Warranty Expiration: 1/10/2008 6:59:59 PM
Obviously they don't know when the unit was purchased, so what exactly do you think this means? Before I go through the customer service channels...
Update: Never mind, I just called and got it all sorted. Methinks I may get the refurb back, sell it for whatever its worth and upgrade to an HDMI Arcade.

If you have 3 red rings, give them a call. I think it should still be covered. If its not 3 RR, then you may be SOL without footing repairs.
HDTV_ME 05-29-08, 05:58 PM It is, intermittently, I'll get it to boot up part way, I'll eject the disc, get three red rings, some dashboard activity after the reboot. After I left it alone, it booted and I had about ten minutes with GTA IV before it froze again. I don't think it's an issue that will go away, but I have set up for a coffin to be delivered so I guess I'm on the road to a refurb.
In the spirit of the thread, it's a 0102 error and as of the latest attempt it boots directly to the three rings.

There is no escaping the RRoD. Luckily MS offers a 3yr warranty to bandage the problem if it fails. Make/Model doesn't matter, they all have a potential to RRoD.
LAKE4742 06-05-08, 01:54 PM **SIGH**
Got the RROD earlier this week, and got the coffin today. I finally stopped staring at it with watery eyes and decided to post. I'm improving, considering at first I looked liked this:

Damn, I can't wait to try the new Battlefield demo!
In the mean time, I'm trying lots of different kinds of foods, and investigating this whole gf thing.
dlconner 06-06-08, 10:53 AM Finally got my XBOX360 back last night. At least this time they repaired it correctly, and it is quiet as can be. I played GTA4 last night for a few hours and it was quiet as a whisper the whole time. Such a huge jump past it before it RROD'ed the first time, and miles beyond when I got it back from the first repair where the fan was smacking something else inside .
LAKE4742 06-06-08, 01:58 PM I just sent mine off on it's way today. How exactly are they fixing them these days? Are they installing 65 nanometer chips, or just swapping out for the same guts?

Same guts, although you may get one with the all-new, better-than-ever faceplate. It's 0.0000001% lighter in weight and has the exact same effect on RROD as 65nm chips!
ultracat 06-07-08, 06:17 PM Just to clarify, I've just sent off my old pre-HDMI Pro for RRoD repair. Will they send me back a newer version Pro w/HDMI? I don't know if that's what you guys mean by 65nm chip model - is that the one with HDMI? Also, I'm in Canada. Anyone know what models are being returned in Canada?

I want to know this too, if they send me back a HDMI 360, than I won't have to buy a new HDMI system.
spyder696969 06-08-08, 01:00 PM Whenever you send in your core unit, M$ sends you out a brand-spankin' new Xbox 1080 in whatever color of case you desire with 65 picometer chips and Talon motherboards that cure everyone's problems, including, but not limited to, testicular cancer, if you so have it. They also send you 10 years of Live Unobtanium, 9 Blutooth controllers, and a 100 terabyte hard drive add-on for your trouble. As a bonus, Bill Gates includes a signed picture of his smokin-hot wife in lingerie, latex, or leather and in the seductive pose of your choosing...but only if you live in Zimbabwe or another place that begins with the letter Z.
This has all been discussed many, many, many times here before.

Thanks, that was the most sarcastic a**hole answer I've ever gotten on AVS forum!
However, it did make me realize I had commited that ultimate of forums sins. I asked a question without searching the 60-page thread first. Thank you, spyder, your sarcastic a**hole answer prompted me to search this massive 60 page thread and I did in fact finally find my answer (eventually).
For those of you wondering what you get back when you ship in your RRoD unit to MS, here's the non-a**hole answer: you just get the same kind e.g. non-HDMI back. In fact, some people are worried that sending in an HDMI version will get them a non-HDMI refurb back. So, you can pretty much bet you will get a non-HDMI refurb back no matter what you send them (unless it's an Elite). You never get something better back.

Spiff69 06-10-08, 10:37 PM Well, I finally got 3RLOD and I'm understandably bummed.
Quick question, tho. I cracked my case a long time ago before there was ever a 3 yr warranty. Am I screwed? It's pretty obvious - my case has been painted.
It may be X-Clamp for me.
Update: I changed my search terms and it looks like most come back "return to sender." Anyone have any other experiences?

I too cracked opened the case so I could mod my Xbox
So there was no sending it back for me

Thanks for the response, glad to hear it worked out - I'll probably get to work on it.
There's one tutorial I've seen (Llama's) that actually instructs you to run the new mount screws through the metal casing under the motherboard. This seems like a smart way to do it, but has anyone here tried it?

That's a very obtrusive, time-consuming, and most likely fix to screw up. Just do lawdawg's method and you'll be fine.

You're not screwed at all, though I'm sure it feels like it right now. Remove the unit and try loosening each of the bolts you installed about 1/8th of a turn. Make certain to allow the unit to "cook" again for the full 2 minutes once you're done. (I hope you did this the first time.) If you have any questions, shoot me a PM and I'll be glad to help.
Just so I can evaluate your attempted fix, what code are you getting this time around?
Stryker412 06-15-08, 09:52 AM Well looks like mine just kicked the bucket. I was playing for a while last night and then tried to turn it on this morning with the 3 RROD. Quadrants 1, 3, and 4 are blinking. I tried another XBOX and it booted fine so it's not the power supply. :(

I noticed there is tape and some type of putty material on some on some of the chips
I don't know if was done by the guy who first tried to fix my RROD or the guy who modded my 360
If it was done by the modder, I don't want to remove it
If it was done by the other guy, I could care less
So should I just get rid of that?

If I had to guess, I'd say that you're talking about the memory chips. Is this unknown goop on the underside of the board, or on top? Can you send a photo of the chips in question? As an alternative, go to the link below and photoshop the image, highlighting the chips that have the putty and shoot it back to me and we'll get you rolling again in no time. Image: http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/xbox360_mobos.jpg
The ROD fix is probably 90% "feel" and only actual 10% technique. How much Arctic Silver thermal paste you use, how tight you get the screws, how thoroughly clean you get the chips, etc, all factor into how long the fix will last. Too much or not enough paste, you overheat. Too much or too little torque on the screws, ROD pops up again. Think of the 360 as a woman...no one touch is going to please all of them all of the time. Sometimes the most subtle of things can make a world of difference. Try, try again. :)

The tape and putty material is on top of the 4 chips
But it's starting to fall off, looks like it was put on there cheaply
Do you think this is for the mod or an attempt at fixing the RROD?
I didn't put a lot of the thermal paste, maybe just a drop
I couldn't get the chips to a complete mirror finish, as suggested in the tutorial
I kept rubbing the two chips with alcohol and Q-tip, but still couldn't get the "grime" off
I will see if I can photoshop the pic you gave me so I can show you where the tape and putty is
Spiff69 06-15-08, 04:42 PM Sorry to hear about the additional troubles from everyone . . .
Well, I tried the Llama fix and it was a no-go. I tried to cook it a few different times. I did not try loosening the screws back up, though.
Luckily, I found my receipt yesterday and took it back to Costco - and I must admit, as much of a crazy house Costco can be sometimes, it means a lot that they actually gave me a credit for a broken machine. I didn't even think of returning it, but then I remembered where I bought it. Muchos kudos to Costcos. Hopefully, I'll be getting an elite from the site this week.
spyder696969 06-15-08, 07:49 PM Strange. Out of all the ones I've fixed (see sig for astonomical number) I've had exactly THREE that didn't work immediately or that had to be re-opened months later...one of which was "repaired" previously by someone else.
RVD26,
Here's my advice:
1. Toss that worthless alcohol and arm yourself with some Zippo lighter fluid to remove the old paste. What likely took you an hour will now take you < 60 seconds. Open up the unit and undo everything you did the first time.
2. Get the chips and the heatsinks mirror-clean. (Easy with the lf.)
3. Add the dab of ARCTIC SILVER (if you're using anything else, forget it) and take note that you're spreading the new paste evenly and very thinly, i.e., about the height of about 2-3 sheets of paper. A credit card works extremely well here.
4. Remove whatever craptacular junk that's atop/underneath/near the memory chips. There is almost as much MISinformation on the memory chips online as there is about the "magic" Falcon mobo and "mystical" 65nm chips that supposedly are the end-all, beat-all greatest things since the wheel was invented. People have used pennies, erasers, and everything else under the sun on the memory when, in reality, nothing is needed whatsoever.
5. Tighten up the bolts. DO NOT overtighten! When you "cook" the board for 2-3 minutes, leave the power cord, the RF unit, and the AV cables all in. This contorts the board back to the shape it will be at once you reassemble the unit.
My guess is that you applied either too much or too little paste the first time. This is easily fixed. Let us know how it goes.
Any questions, PM me.

Thanks for the advice
Do I have to use the Zippo brand lighter fluid?
I already have some lighter fluid that I use to grill with
Can I use that?
I didn't even try to clean the heatsinks
The tutorial only said to clean the two chips
And no, I did not put that much thermal paste on
I will have to put more on next time
I'm extremely busy with work during the week, so I won't be able to try all this until next weekend at the earliest
I was also thinking of doing a mod to increase the fan strength to help keep it cooler
spyder696969 06-15-08, 09:09 PM Do I have to use the Zippo brand lighter fluid?
I would. It's like $3 total and works wonders.

And no, I did not put that much thermal paste on
I will have to put more on next time
When you tighten the bolts, the small bit of extra paste gets pushed out, making for a perfect seal.
I was also thinking of doing a mod to increase the fan strength to help keep it cooler
If you must. It's risky and the benefits are debatable.

Yes we have much love for Costco. Glad things worked out for you.
Ramsrule 06-15-08, 10:26 PM some info on the console - 360 Premium - build date of November 2006 - purchased April 2007 - always had disk-read errors from the beginning from all games. Sometimes several times per gaming session. Ran a CD cleaner through it that helped or so it seemed. But anyways.... on to the RROD.... duhn duhn DUHN -
http://www.ramsrule.com/images/360rrd2.JPG
I've been having random lockups over the last week or so.... the screen would checkerboard and then lock up, with no RROD. Maybe once or twice per couple of hours of gaming.
Well today, it was every two minutes, but still no RROD. But I knew it would eventually since this was the exact same thing that happened to a friend of mine. So I called Microsoft and they tried to hose me for 99 bucks since it hadnt RROD'd and that's the only thing covered on the new 3 year extended warranty. I told the lady that I'd keep it and keep playing it until it RROD'd since it was inevitable.
As soon as I hang up the phone, my son reboots it and goes into Asassin's Creed and the console locks up as expected. Cut it off and back on and WHAM, RROD! I call back MS and get the coffin aranged. It'll be here in a week. No charge for the repair.
So it took me all of an hour to head to walmart and pick up an arcade.... I'm back in business with an HDMI port to boot! I also added the two year extended warranty for 17 bucks so I wont have to do all of this again... I figured for that price, I can swap it at Wally World and keep on keeping on.
I'll end up giving the refurb to my son for his birthday next month assuming I get it back in time. If not, I'll just blow up the picture above, put it in a box and wrap it as a birthday present. :D
Keep dreaming. No more in store returns with the extended warranty. It starts after your MS warranty ends and you send it through wal-mart 800 number or website. You only have a 90 day in store warranty. Call to confirm if you do not believe me. They started this due to all the returns and MS offering the 3 year warranty now.

Dang..... not cool! So what's the average turn around time for WalMart?
I'm aware of it starting after the MS one year warranty, but I'm hoping that it'll at least make it through that.
No it starts after the 3 year warranty ends with MS. Should go get your money back.... About the only places left that do in store warranty is Costco and don't quote me. And Best Buy. Reason being stores have stopped in store swap is the high return rate and people doing the ole switcharoo.

Cool..... I'll make some phone calls and if what you're saying is indeed true, I'll request a refund.
Thanks for info!!
No problem. Oh its true since I just bought mine a little over a month ago. My sis worked there at the time and got me $35 off.

Had my reasonably early console for a few weeks - froze up hard on a few gameplays. Took out the HDD, and bang - RROD AGAIN.
Coffin on its way, this time they supposedly want the power supply.
Aristo7905 06-18-08, 08:57 AM As I've stated hundreds of times here before, ALL 360s are doomed to the same fate until the X-Clamps are permanently removed.
Heat, in relation to the 360's design, is NOT a primary cause of, rather, it is a secondary and otherwise mildly influential facilitator in, the inevitable process of RROD.
Good morning,
I recieve shippment today on my new 360 (i have owned a PS3 until now), Now do you recomend removing the x-clamps prior to playing? will this void my warentee?
Thank you for any information.

I remove the clamps on all my units the moment I get them, but for those that haven't done the repair hundreds upon hundreds of times, it's better to just leave everything alone, as opening up the unit for any reason will void your warantee.

You have a new 360 with a 3yr warranty on the RRoD. Don't open the case as it will void your warranty. If it dies after the warranty expires you can do the xclamp fix.
