spyder696969 10-21-08, 10:50 AM ...Also, after asking for the box I think the girl thought she put me on hold already because I heard her say "oh loooooord Jesus Christ! Now he actually wants me to send him a box."
...Maybe when you guys called, Jesus wasn't in the office and couldn't perform the miracle that this girl made it out to be.
That's the funniest damn thing I've read in quite some time! :D
Hello,
Mine died last week. They automatically started the process for the email label (and I provide my own box). I asked them to send me a box because I didn't want to pay for a box/packing at UPS. She explained they only provide a box if you ask for it. So I'm not sure why they are refusing them to some people.
Also, after asking for the box I think the girl thought she put me on hold already because I heard her say "oh loooooord Jesus Christ! Now he actually wants me to send him a box." Put me on hold for about 10 minutes. Today is the second day I am waiting for the box. However, I am in Toronto, Canada, so maybe that adds a day or two.
Maybe when you guys called, Jesus wasn't in the office and couldn't perform the miracle that this girl made it out to be.
Thanks for everyone's info in this forum.
I agree with spyder...That is hilarious. :D
zero_zep 10-28-08, 09:25 PM ok so this is the third time my box is going to go. Expect its taking longer this time to break down. After about 15mins of play the game starts to get real choppy like it cant handle it but the SOB keeps going. Can I induce it? This is exactly what happened last year but it didn't nearly take this long after showing the signs. What can I do? The games are pretty much unplayable cause the chop is so bad. Microsoft really does owe its customers on this one. I get this once every year, its like being prone to pneumonia every winter or something and I'm tired of it. Yes Microsoft makes it better but I still get sick every year!

wrap it in a towel and leave it on for a while.

Just call them up and tell them what it is doing. That after 15 minutes it is unplayable. When I called about mine, I told them that it had RROD and since then it would only play sporadically. It hadn't turned red since that first time. They had me send it in. They told me about emailing me the label so I asked about the box. The guy said if you really need them too, they would, but it would be faster if I had a box to use. I decided to use my own. They emailed me the label the same day and I mailed it the next. That was originally on a Monday and I received another unit the following Tuesday. 8 days all together. You might be able to complain about the reliability but it is hard to complain about customer service when they are that fast in responding.
crispytreat 10-29-08, 08:56 PM My replacement came today 10/29 and I sent my old one on 10/18, so 11 days for me. I am going to hook it up now to see if it works.

After every man, woman, and child in India has processed 100,000 repair calls each and every M$ repairman has "fixed" 1,000,000 units apiece, they should be quick about it by now! :D

Zing!
And to answer your question, Obama spent $4 million for the 30 minute spot.
But of course this isn't a political forum, so I'm not even sure why you brought up Obama's name in the first place.
Hi,
I just experienced my first RROD. I've joined the club. Yippee.
Fortunately, I recently got a 2nd XBOX 360 as a work bonus. So I want to unbox the new one and use it while the original is being fixed. My questions are:
1) Do I need the HD from the broken one to play the arcade games I've bought? Or will xbox live just let me re-download them?
2) Will I get the same HD back if I send it in with the broken one? I don't want to lose my saved games.
3) Maybe I should just swap the original HD off the broken XBOX and put it on the new XBOX, and send in the new HD with the broken XBOX?
Oh BTW, I did the error code readout described in this thread and it indicated a GPU issue (not HD issue).
Thanks for any suggestions,
Sooke

Take off the HD before you send it in. Only send in the console, nothing else.
zero_zep 10-30-08, 10:48 PM So I called them and for the first time they are actually really nice and told me I'm getting my coffin. And of crouse now my x-box is working fine. It only took 10-15mins to start getting choppy for the last two weeks...today I played for amlost an hour and a half and nothing! Why is this machine playing with my emotions!!! It did this for gears 1, bioshock, and now its back for round 3 on gears 2!
redshift1 10-30-08, 10:50 PM Use the xbox.com repair site very easy and they explain everthing read my prior posts. Good Luck.
crispytreat 10-31-08, 08:57 AM Microsoft sent back my same console, but the faceplate is brand new. Is it standard practice to replace the faceplate?
bigbrain28 10-31-08, 11:08 AM I really don't mean to sound pedant, but - If you guys would read the details on how to send in your Xbox you would all know you seriously only send the base console. No faceplates, no HDD no nothing. all xbox wants is the 'guts'.
As for the guy with the 'extra' xbox, when you attach (broken xbox #1) your #1 HDD to your backup xbox it BECOMES your #1 xbox. I have on more than one occasion takin my HDD to a friends house and attached it to his console and it was as if we were playing at my house on my console. Very simple and very well planned, IMHO, by MS.

The instructions stated to remove any custom faceplates, my console had the original faceplate.
I was just wondering if the new faceplate was standard.
Maybe they broke your old one or something.

So it seems...the 7 I have sent in so far have all came back with faceplates on them. Now all 7 of those weren't mine. Two were mine and the rest I sent them in for family members.
Well my elite died- ROD- RIP 10/19/08. Had it only for a year. Lasted less long than my original launch xbox 360. And now I have to provide my own shipping box because they no longer ship a box to you- cheap skates.
Well in less than 14 days I got a new elite back. Turns out that paying the $14 on my own box and packaging to ship cut down on the turn around time by quite a lot. It was an older elite than the one I sent in, but refurbed from what I can tell. Its nice to be playing again...
happycamper515 11-05-08, 02:40 AM My 2nd XBOX 360 just crapped out on me...the 3RROD. I bought them from Best Buy w/ the warranty so first one they exchanged it no questions asked. I'm wondering if I should get another one. Best Buy gives you store credit so I don't have to buy another 360.
A few months ago I got a PS3 from a shop going out of business for $60 and it just sits there...maybe it's time I start using it. I have a very limited 360 game library since I only play football games. I have about 3 years of Madden/NCAA so it's not that big of a loss since I've played them all quite a bit.
What to do

Wow.
What a shame that you've missed out on so very many good games across so many consoles. :(

That is what happend to me as well. I am on my third crap box 360 right now! I love it when it works, but the thing is just a break waiting to happen. My PS3 has been totally solid so far and I have mostly bought all my new games for it
Sardaan 11-05-08, 08:56 PM my second 360 RROD'd, I went to Costco and told them it no longer worked...bam $600+ back in my pocket. My local Costco does not carry Elites and I did not want to order one from their website. So I stopped by Best Buy and found a 9-9-2008 build date elite.
All I can say is that it is VERY quiet...I have NOT played a game with a disc in it yet. But at idle it is much more quiet than my PS3.
Edited my post to clarify my statement :-)

Hmmm. My PS3s are all dead silent with a disc in or at idle. So quiet, in fact, that I often have to look at the light to know that it's on or not. All of my 360s are noisy as hell by direct comparison, even the ones with Talismoon Whispers.* Strange.
*Compared to all my friends' 360s however, mine are much, much more quiet.
agnathra 11-09-08, 02:40 PM OK, my box is no longer giving video, or when it does, it looks like it's only giving 256 color video (it actually starts out ok and looks ok on the blades, but gaming always makes the problem come back). but i'm not getting RROD (this is on a best buy PRP unit that replaced my original launch unit).
so i'm applying the "blanket of justice" to try to get the RROD, but after reading all the posts since february, i see the RROD can come and go.
so my question is, has anyone sent in a unit for RROD replacement, but MS said that it wasn't giving RROD when they turned it on, so they either charged you $140 to repair or sent it back unrepaired?
thanks!
sheempa 11-09-08, 06:26 PM I have a question for u guys. my son 360 has rrod for the second time. its a regular 360 without the hdmi. when Microsoft fixes it, will they put the same components that in the newer system?
also, can u guys give me an idea on how good the new systems are compare to the systems that does not have the hmdi(falcon system).
has anyone have there new system get the rrod? I'm tired of wasting my money on these things

M$ pretty much takes your word for it nowdays. Since every, single, last 360 will suffer this fate, it makes sense.

You get the same system, just a bandage to hold it together for a few months more.

ALL systems will suffer RROD. Period. :(

I've seen brand new Elites die within 48 hours of purchase. "Waste" is subjective. ;)

I phone in with a RROD and the guy asked me to turn it off then turn it back on. It worked then and he gave me a refrence number.
30 minutes later it RROD's
and I phone in.
I had to ask for a coffin.
Cygnus311 11-13-08, 11:19 AM Sent my 4th death back in this morning. Any chance I'll get one back with HDMI this time?

Doubtful, my roommate sent a RROD in a couple of weeks ago. He got back a different unit, but it still didn't have HDMI. Also the faceplate where the USB chargers attach was cracked but I'm sure that happened in shipping.

You should be demanding a new console after this many returns and failed "fixes" gone awry. Even then, it's possible you'd get back your original with nothing but a shiny, new manufactured "today" sticker in place. I would have suggested you place a small, discrete mark on the console and board as proof of this, but you've already sent it in, and therefore, it's too late for that tactic. :(
Cygnus311 11-13-08, 01:32 PM I know of several people that have "demanded" something in return and gotten nothing.

? ?
Either you're implying that we, as consumers, should simply bend over and take it with a smile and silence, or you're making a joke of some sort that I simply am not getting.
If this is a case of the former, I must then ask: What if everyone used M$' business model?
Should we accept a heart transplant with obvious defects that must be replaced every 6 months?
Should we not complain if our car's engine dies every 5,000 miles?
Should we allow for ALL our beloved speakers/TVs/PJs/gear to be continually shipped back and forth across the country forever...all in the hands of UPS drivers that shot-put our equipment as though they're preparing for the Olympics?
Complacency on the part of the consumer only leads to complacency on the part of the manufacturer. Personally, I say it's time to stand up and take charge!

Very well said, I must agree. My Elite Just barely made it to a year and half.
We should MARCH!!!
Wouldn't that be great. March of the RROD
Dejected Santa 11-19-08, 02:57 PM Wow......my launch Xbox 360 just died less than a week before the 3 year warranty was up. Glad the RRoD was now so that I still get free repair/replacement and not after the 22nd.

If I were you I would hope for a replacement cuz only with replacements do they reset the full warranty of one year and 3 year RROD.

Every state has a lemon law, I suggest anyone who has returned theirs several times obtain a copy of the law, read it. If after you read it you feel you deserve a new 360 then read it to Microsoft and if they refuse then politely turn it over to your State Attorney General and also file a claim with the BBB in Washington state. I am not saying it will get you a new 360, but it certainly can't hurt.
Nathan78 11-22-08, 08:20 AM I had the red ring of death with error code 1020, i used the heat gun method and now my box seems to be running fine!
tdogroeder 11-23-08, 10:29 AM My 3rd 360 died last night. They want me to use my own box to send it to them, that is rediculous. I guess by using my own box I can mail it back to them quicker and get the ball rolling for a replacment.
Are the replacements have a better life span or they about the same as all of the others.

Since you're on your 3rd unit, you already know the answer to your (question?)
confidenceman 11-23-08, 12:34 PM ********ers.
First death. 2 red lights, error code 0013. Supposedly overheating, but it's been off for 12 hours in a cool, well-ventilated place. Instant I turn it on, fan kicks on into overdrive with 2 red flashing lights.
This is a Falcon unit with HDMI. The deceased is survived by its older siblings the PS3 and Wii.

Yeah I updated with Netflix Thursday and then on Friday the box was freezing when first turning on. Then Saturday it did the RROD deal. This is the fourth one to do so. I went out and bought one with HDMI (which I wanted anyhow) and when I get this one back it is going to Ebay!!

My 2nd console (an Elite) RROD'd back in October. I sent it to MS and I got a "replacement" console delivered to me on 11/4. Last night that one died with the RROD again. So the answer to your question is pretty obvious. It didn't even last three freakin' weeks.
Luckily I saved the box the last POS came in so I boxed it up and I dropped it off at UPS this afternoon.
I will try one more time. If the next one RROD then I will send it to MS and just sell the one that comes back to me.

Never mind on the code error, I read the first page here.

I sent mine back twice...I gave up on the 3rd time around and fixed it myself....I used the video guides from x-box360redlightfix.com . I highly recommend just fixing it yourself...I waited 4 weeks each time to get my xbox back from Microsoft. That was a waste of time....BILL GATES I WANT MY TIME BACK!!

bob5150 12-02-08, 04:10 PM I am expecting my rrod'd XBOX to arrive back to me today. I had the bad luck of sending it in right before Thanksgiving so the return trip from TX took over a week.
Question......my XBOX had an HDMI port (which I use). Will the replacement unit that they send have HDMI as well. I figure that it would be just my luck to have waited for this long only to have to send it back or dispute the replacement for not being exactly like the RROD'd machine that I sent them.
Has anyone dealt with this? Did you get a HDMI Xbox back?
Thanks
Bob

Ahhh. Now I see. Didn't specify 2nd controller in your 1st post.
If you couldn't sync ANY controller, then maybe RF board. Since you can't sync 2nd controller, then I'd guess bad controller. It's quite common.
bob5150 12-03-08, 06:00 PM Thanks for the info. I'm still waiting since a signature is required for delivery and they stopped by around 2:30 yesterday to deliver. Go figure...no one home to sign for the thing. Jeez.

You're likely in the infamous E74 category. Just call M$ and tell them you're getting 3 rings after 10-30 minutes. Do NOT tell them you have 1 ring...unless you want to pay the $100.*
*E74 not qualifying for warranty is horseshit, imo. It's pretty much 3 rings with a different code.
^ lol, i called them up the 2nd day i got that E74 error. so they already knows i has it. D'OH!
im srsly considering fixing it myself and having 2 360's but so far i've seen its a 50/50 chance it would work and not work. so ponying up $100 is an option, but maybe i can call MS up again and tell them the unit started working but then got 3 RROD's. cant hurt to try.
Fanaticalism 12-04-08, 10:18 PM Whelp, I am on my 4th Elite in 2 months, all due to RRoD. What are the odds that Microsoft will just replace it with a new one?
Had to send my box back 3 times (all 3 red rings!). Hopefully not a 4th!
CaCHooKa Man 12-05-08, 10:35 PM nice.. after close to 3 years i get my first 3 red rings. 0110 Memory Error / Memory Overheating and another time that i turned it on i got E71.
Got my 2nd RROD last night. Looks like these things last about a year and a half. My question may exist elsewhere in this thread, but has anyone sent one in recently that was pre-HDMI? I was wondering if the replacement would have it, or will I still get a refurb with the old motherboard? I read in one of the game rags that they had a supply of 65 nm chips they were putting in machines with the old non-HDMI motherboard for warranty replacements with RROD, but they had a limited supply. I quess I'll find out in about 3 weeks.
I know this rig is a bit of a pain, but at least Microsoft is giving me basically a 3rd machine for free. Somehow I doubt some of their competitors would do the same thing. Of course every Nintendo or Sony console I own still works, and some of them are 20 years old.

My original launch-day console just went in for its first service after getting the red rings a week ago. The rep on the phone insisted that I would get a repair, not a replacement. We will see. I will let you know what comes back.
CaCHooKa Man 12-11-08, 02:15 AM sent my 360 away in its coffin today :(
dorito31561 12-11-08, 09:42 PM well my xenon 360 just went out today for rrod, had it since june 07. Started freezing, trouble reading discs. Im happy cus the dvd drive was a pile. If I get another POS back then im gonna get on the phone and get a new replacement (used to work tech support so I know the right path to go)

Yeah. Good luck with that.

jasonstiller 12-12-08, 01:17 PM well ****, the elite I bought when my pro died and was getting fixed not even a year ago died on me yesterday. Ridiculous, just freaking ridiculous. And OH right before xmas and right before my parents fly in for vacation. Come to think of it this is the 3rd time my 360 has RRODed right around xmas AAARGH
Your 360 is just showing its xmas spirit! That sucks though.

chris_logitech 12-14-08, 02:10 AM 4th time being sent in yesterday...i was able to get a box sent with overnight shipping though! anyone else so pissed they are considering selling the xbox for a ps3!?
MrXpress 12-14-08, 04:00 PM E74 one-red ring death on my Sept-07 manufactured Falcon (it had to have been one of the first batches of Falcons, cause it is 16.5A and has a 203W power brick. Only has two inductors and has the Falcon/Opus power connector so I know it's a Falcon though). I might just replace it with a Jasper Arcade if I can find one, since fixing this would basically be paying $100 now to pay $100 later once it breaks again.
spyder696969 12-14-08, 04:34 PM E74 one-red ring death...
Basically the same thing as RROD.

None of this information means anything, as ALL 360s are equally flawed.
I might just replace it with a Jasper Arcade if I can find one...
See above comment.
...since fixing this would basically be paying $100 now to pay $100 later once it breaks again.
Just send it in and tell them you're getting 3 red lights after 20-30 minutes. A free "fix" on your "Flaw-con" unit (not that that matters one iota) is better than buying into the hype and getting a "Jazzercise" unit with the exact same flaws.
mattzane83 12-15-08, 01:36 AM Yay, I get to join the club. My xbox falcon, manufactured in Jan 08, has got the infamous RROD. I didn't even play it that often and it was always well ventilated. I had even been playing all the games off the hard drive so the drive wasn't creating any extra heat. I went to the website to register my console and the site wouldn't work no matter what browser I used. So I had to call and I got the shipping label emailed so hopefully I get it shipped off tomorrow.
CaCHooKa Man 12-15-08, 07:43 AM apparently microsoft has received my console already and are in the process of repairing it right now.
i forgot to add that that was impossible since the ups tracking number for the box says it isnt going to be delivered to them until today. i just checked it again right now and its out for delivery.
user4avsforum 12-15-08, 12:56 PM My previous warranty replaced 360 just went back to MS for a RROD replacement. Although it is inconvenient to without the XBOX for a week or two and to go through this repair I am amazed at how well MS has handled this. The first unit failed shortly after the original warranty would have expired and before MS announced the warranty extention. MS repaired it free, including providing the box and free shipping. Support was provided via telephone, overall that process worked as well as you would expect.
This time the entire process was managed through the Xbox web site. Very smooth, simple to process the request, and detailed status tracked on the web site.
So although it has been a pain, I have to say MS has put together a very good process to support the repair.

I guess practice makes perfect! ;)
Millions upon million of times later, their system is definitely getting better, even though it's not ideal...yet. Another 10-20 million Falcons and Jaspers and a few more tweaks might just do it. :D
TRALFAZ 12-15-08, 09:55 PM Well... Lost my Halo box last night to the RRoD. That makes it two different deaths for me in one year. One premium and one Halo box. I hope my Elite is not thinking of dying any time soon.
CaCHooKa Man 12-17-08, 06:15 AM just got the official email for microsoft saying they received my console even though they really received it two days ago

Same issue on my Falcon Elite as well. My Manufacturing date was a little later...(Oct). I really thought I was past these type of troubles...:(
At least the repair process looks to be easier this time around. This is my 4 time overall (3 total on my launch premium + refurb replacements). This time around I do have a backup (my premium...oops, did I just jinx my other box?).
CaCHooKa Man 12-21-08, 07:37 PM We are happy to share with you that your service request is completed and your Xbox console is now ready for return shipment. We will e-mail you again with the shipment tracking information when your Xbox console has been shipped.
guess i wont be getting it until after christmas
mattzane83 12-22-08, 04:45 PM Yeah I was hoping I would get mine back before Christmas too. They received it on last Wednesday and it's still "being repaired" on Monday. They just give you a different one but it takes that long? I'm gonna go hit something.

I am kind of irritated.
I did not get back my original console. Instead of my launch-day box, I got back a refurb with a manufacture date of 06-26-2008. This seems to be a worst of all worlds situation. The new box has some minor scuffs on the back and no HDMI. For the record, my old box did not have a mark on it.
I would probably be less bothered if at least there was some acknowledgment that they pulled a switch. Instead there is a letter in the box claimed that my console was "repaired".
Anyone think that calling to complain would result in any action?
How does a manufacture date of 6-26-2008 not have HDMI? Is that the refurb date? My understanding was everything manufactured after sometime in 2007 all had HDMI. I'm currently still waiting for my repair. They told me it's in transit, so I guess I'll know soon. I actually wrote down my serial # so if I get a new one I'll know it.

I wish that I had thought to write down the serial number.

Yes. M$ often will simply slap a new sticker on the back of some ancient Frankenstein unit and pretend it was "built" on that date. Sadly, many people think they are getting a "new" console, buying into the sham. :(

It gets better. The MFG Date and serial number smudged when I touched it. Like it was newly printed from an inkjet printer.
Time to gear up for a call to MS.
CaCHooKa Man 12-25-08, 01:55 AM microsoft actually sent back the faceplate that i left on my 360 when i sent it in so ill probably be getting a refurbished console back. i hope it comes with and original faceplate though. i left on the faceplate cause i wanted one that matched the console since i broke the one that originally came with it and had to get a silver one. :p
Mikey Palmice 12-25-08, 11:05 PM I keep getting the red rings flashing when I start up. Upon reading the first post here, I found that it was the following error......
0020 (Not yet known, possibly overheating)
I blew into the vents and eventually it started up again. Lasted like two gaming sessions, and it happened again.
Today I hit all the vents with canned air, and at first it worked, but the next time I started it up in failed again.
is there anything else I can do here?
I assume I have to buy a new one now? It is probably about 3 years old I think. It doesn't get played every day, sometimes sits for months at a time.
Thanks for reading.

Launch date consoles RRoD coverage expired on 11/22/08. If you console was bought AFTER (today...12/26/08) then you are still under warranty for RRoD. go here:
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/LiveIDSignIn.aspx?redirectUrl=http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=register
and sign-in and register the serial# from your Xbox. From there you will find out if you are still covered for RRoD. Its pretty simple and will answer your query.

Just call. That is what I did. No registration and they didn't ask. I had a launch day box and they did not charge.
spyder696969 12-26-08, 02:01 PM One would think that M$ may have extended their launch coverage up until Jan. 1, 2009...perhaps in anticipation of those that would claim that they got their launch consoles as X-mas gifts. If mine had just barely expired, I know I would argue that point.
bigbrain28 12-26-08, 02:37 PM ^^Agreed, sounds logical. RRoD is no secret, I doubt M$ would deny any occurrence. a deadline was prolly just there so down the road they have recourse if/when they really stop supporting the RRoD issue.

Ok, this is what I got. It says standard warranty expired. that is the one year, right? But it says, three year warranty on 3 red lights. Looks like I will be covered, right? I will call as well to verify. But they are sending me a box to ship it in.
thanks

how long have you owned it? was it free to fix?
CaCHooKa Man 12-27-08, 06:40 AM how long have you owned it? was it free to fix?
ive had it since october of 06 and the manufacture date was in march of that year. it was the first time its ever acted up. i was still in the 3 year window so it was free. i looked at my account on xbox.com and they extended my warranty until next december even though it already expired. im a little glad that it got messed up now and not after i was out of the 3 year window.
CaCHooKa Man 12-31-08, 07:27 AM got my 360 back today and they sent me one with a benq drive. its way quieter than my previous 360 and the disc tray actually opens without me having to tap the top of the case to get it to open.
Got mine back last night, and it actually appears to be the same one I sent in! I'm somewhat surprised. So far so good.
RKRocha 01-02-09, 10:34 PM Not! Got rrod #2 today!
Launch day console... Officially out of warranty, but have +1yr MS extension. Have to send in my own box. Not happy cuz I know I'll only get 15-18mos after the fix. Maybe arcade will be down to $99 by then. I guess its time to play mgs4 on my new ps3?!
update: packed my RRoD 360 in a box today and dropped it at UPS shipper. address to repair center was Mesquite,TX which is 20min driving from my house. I expect my box to arrive there on 1/7 or 1/8; with repair complete and back to me by 1/16 at the absolute latest. Again, I am pretty bummed because if it dies again after 12/17/09, then this bad boy is going out to pasture.
Mikey Palmice 01-02-09, 10:57 PM still haven't gotten my return box yet. can I send it in my own box?

You "can" send it in your own box, but if you've already requested a coffin, I doubt M$ will allow it.
Just got the RROD for the sixth time on 12/31! GRRRRRR!!!!
It's been out for repair 6 out of the past 24 months. I've NEVER had a working 360 on New Years Day (this is the first year it actually worked on Christmas).
I'm glad I purchased the 3-year warranty from M$. This is the least reliable ANYTHING I've ever owned.

Did you really purchase it? I sure hope you didnt have to waste your money on something they're now giving away for free.
spyder696969 01-05-09, 12:06 PM Time to call and demand your $ back! (Nicely, but firmly, of course.)
Bada Bing 01-05-09, 02:24 PM Just got my (my son's) RROD Xbox back from MS. First time with this warranty process--too bad we spent almost a year without the unit, not knowing we could get it fixed for free. Anyway, now I wonder if there's any consensus about how to position the unit or what ventilation to shoot for with the unit to avoid future trouble. Or is it a total crap shoot?
p.s., I tried searching this thread for the term "orientation" and was surprised to get zero results.
Thanks,
David

Best to play it horizontally. This accomplishes two things:
First, it gives the "bottom" of the unit (the side opposite the hard drive) more space to breathe. This is important, as over 50% of the air intake comes from this single area. The "top" is pretty much blocked off completely, what with the hdd and DVD drive all but blocking the entire pathway.
Second, it virtually eliminates any chance of one of your discs spiraling out of control and cutting an irreparable groove in them should the console get bumped or moved at all.
Good luck.
cueCrew 01-06-09, 10:31 AM Dodged the 3rings bullet?
Last night we had a bit of a power dip after which the X360 flickered off and came back with three sections flashing red.
I powered it off and on with (fingers crossed) no problems so far.
I've been through the return process before so I'm glad it's still working. While sending some packages before Christmas, I was in line behind a mom who was sending back a unit for repair and can't imagine that they received the "new" unit in time.
When you receive a repaired system, what is the warranty extended to? My brother has a launch unit which died about a year or so ago, and the one he got back is now starting to act up. Thanks.

I was told 90days by MS support for a repaired RRoD unit. Not sure if it is different for other types of repairs.
yamahaSHO 01-07-09, 08:59 PM Finally got the RROD :( 0102
What sucks is it comes two weeks AFTER I installed it into an XB-01 with and extra fan between the CPU and GPU heat pipe.
EDIT: I took it out of the Lian Li case and put it back in the original 360 case and it RROD a couple times. I let it sit for about an hour or so and turned it on again and it came up fine. I've been playing COD4 for about an hour now. Not sure what the deal was, but it works great now.

So if my 360 was under a year old and I've already had to get it repaired and it came back w/ a 90 day warranty, do I still have like 2 years on the RROD warranty thing?

I'm pretty sure you time doesn't reset.
I didn't think so either. That would mean that if my 360 red rings at 2 years 11 months, I get another 3 years on the returned unit. Doesn't sound right.

Yes I am lying cuz after 4 RROD consoles I have no idea what I am talking about. (smirk)
yamahaSHO 01-08-09, 07:53 PM If you can show some proof... but otherwise, that's not standard practice. They'd lose even more money.
MicrosoftBlows 01-08-09, 08:12 PM Yes I am lying cuz after 4 RROD consoles I have no idea what I am talking about. (smirk)
I agree i too myself have been through 6 RRoD's since 2006! I have delt with these Communist Bastards for too long! When you send one in for repair and they send you one back you have a 1 year warranty from time of send back. If you get the RRoD it is under a 3 yr warranty from time of purchase or repair. Believe me i have done this many of times. I will never pay for any other Xbox product. Except for a game! I am in the process of getting back my 7th console. If they do not act on this one in a timely manner, I am requesting a full refund! (This is part of their policy) And am filing a lawsuit in federal court!
boblinds 01-09-09, 02:11 AM They'd lose even more money.
Considering how shoddy their hardware design appears to be with the Xbox 360, I think they DESERVE to lose more money. (Though, to be fair, I have to give them props on the 3yr/RRoD policy.)
Yes I am lying cuz after 4 RROD consoles I have no idea what I am talking about. (smirk)
Yeah, but the 4 RROD consoles could still be within the original three year window.
Anyway, my brother's Xbox did die last night after acting up a few days earlier. When he logged into to Microsoft site for repairs, it tells him his warranty expired November 2008, three years from when he got his first 360, hence no new extended 3 year warranty on returned units. :(
Has anyone experienced anything to the contrary?
yamahaSHO 01-09-09, 07:33 PM I highly doubt they'd give you a new 3-year warranty with every replacement. They won't support the 360 long enough for that to even work.

That has nothing to do with what they "deserve".
Mikey Palmice 01-09-09, 10:55 PM I'm such a dummy. I actually selected the option to send it in my own box and didn't realize. Wasted like 2 weeks.
Funny thing is, as I was sending out my xbox, my new ps3 arrived:D

Give them a call and see what they tell you on the phone. I had a launch day console and they said my warranty expired on 12/17/08 (counting 3yrs for RRoD that is), so they added 30days to my official warranty period. Also, I called on 1/2/09 so another 2 weeks was added on. The girl on the phone didn't make any reference to my +1yr MS warranty as the reason why I was still able to turn in for free RRoD repair.

I just got an email stating that "my xbox has been repaired and they are sending it out soon"
I looked at the warranty status on mine and it says it is covered for another year from todays date.
My experience was that i bought a halo console in sept 07 and it broke once on me, the dvd drive spring 08. There must have been no extenstion on the warranty when i sent it in that time, because i had to pay 97~ dollars to get it repaired for 1 red ring most recently.
But i guess i have a warranty extentsion now, maybe because i spent the money or maybe because they had to get me a new console?
spyder696969 01-13-09, 11:26 AM i bought a halo console in sept 07 and it broke once on me, the dvd drive spring 08...i had to pay 97~ dollars to get it repaired

you misunderstand me,
mine broke once last spring and was fixed for free
it broke again recently and it cost me 97~
BigDaddyRaymond 01-13-09, 11:34 AM Not for nothing but I am on my 5th Xbox. Thank got it is covered every time because once it does it the first time Xbox gives you a 3 year warranty for each time after that. But a side note, i have had them go down quite a few times and it starts by not reading disks and freezing a lot. I called Xbox one time about it and they said that I could send it in for repair but it would but like $130. Knowing that it was still under warranty for the ring of death i went out and bought one of those cooling fans, the one that you plug into the Xbox and then the Power Supply plugs into that. The problem with this is that the Xbox does not receive ample power because the fan is using it up. Therefore, makes the processer overheat and you get the 3 red lights. So I guess i have figured out a way to make my lights come on therefore I get it replaced for free. I only wish 1 the problem would never happen in the first place and 2 it wouldn’t take a month to get it back. But if you’re having the same problem and you know you’re covered, go buy the fan and get it fixed for free.
BigDaddyRaymond 01-13-09, 11:42 AM Just got my (my son's) RROD Xbox back from MS.
Thanks,
David
Lay the unit down. I know they made it so you can stand it up, I had it like that for my first 2 units as well. But there is a huge vent on the bottom of the unit and if you stand it up, it inhibits the unit to cool as well as it can. So the best way to position it is 1 out in the open and not in an entertainment center, and 2 on its side!!!!!

Uhhhh...no? Halo boxes haven't been made for quite some time now.
More likely, you got a refurbed Halo unit with a shiny, new label and nothing more. :(
At least it works! (For now, anyway. ;))
alczervik 01-20-09, 04:38 PM well it looks new to me, had a sticker on the remote sensor, and had zero blemishes, maybe it isnt new but it sure looks like it.
RKRocha 01-20-09, 05:27 PM I am curious what I'm gonna get it. I wouldnt mind a refurb with HDMI since i have a launch day unit. We;ll see what happens i guess. for my 1st rrod i got my unit back repaired.
Argghh! UPS tried to deliver my return this afternoon, but no one able to sign! My bro just started back to school otherwise he would have been there....I guess I'll get it tomorrow..
MicrosoftBlows 01-20-09, 07:46 PM Im telling you Jerrys Kids, I have had one since launch day. This is the 6th time im sending it in! I demanded overnight delivery here and back and they did! Took about a freaking month to get them to send a casket for it. But today i got it. They also sent me a free refurbished wireless controller (3rd One) just for my troubles. They cant send you a refurbished unit with a 90 day warranty if your original units warranty is not even 6 months young. I have experienced 3 RRod for the 6th time now. Every time 3 yr warranty! Stupid bastards! I guess i will get free Xbox's for life. As long as they keep messing up i guess!

yamahaSHO 01-24-09, 11:29 PM If you received the 3 red lights, you can ship it to them. Register the console on www.xbox.com/support and it will let you request a repair from there. I just did this last week. I had MS send out a box for me with return shipping lable. The box has no markings on it and when I gave it to the UPS driver, he said "geeze, another Xbox" :)
I am currently waiting for my new Xbox.

That should not be a problem. My launch day box died last Saturday morning. I called them up and they gave me a repair number. I logged on, printed the UPS label, slapped it on a box I already had and sent it off on Monday. It only had to go 200 miles so they received it on Tuesday. It is still in the repair process as of today. I'm hopeful I might get it back this week.

for anyone who doesnt get an email you can search in ups under track by reference, with your work order number given by microsoft to get the tracking number.
go to ups.com,
then tracking
then track by reference
enter the number given as your work order
then the dates that it is in

Yep, just tried it and that works also. Nice tip. Still would be nice if MS was relaying this type of information.
As long as I hear the doorbell I should have my Xbox back today. It was out for delivery at 5am. I will be interested to see if it is my unit or if I got a refurb. And of course that it actually works.

d james 01-27-09, 05:01 PM Well after almost three years, mine is now gettig the 3 red lights, I've only got one month left on warranty, so I feel pretty lucky.
I do have a question, how do they determine the 3 red lights? Does the unit show some type of diagnose code? The reason I ask is because my unit doesn't show the red lights sometimes until after playing for a couple hours, sometimes it does it right away everytime, but that seems to be rare, I usually have to play and let the system freeze first. So I don't want MS to just start it up and say, nope it didn't show the red lights, were not fixing it.

It was taking mine about 5 minutes to show the red lights when I sent it in. What it did when it got there who knows. They sent me a refurb and a 1 month extension to Xbox Live.
My only concern is my refurb has a build date of 2-12-06. I hope they gutted it and replaced everything. I wonder if I should start preparing to just buy a Jasper when this one dies.

Man mine did the same exact thing! This is the 6th time mine is being repaired. So every 3rd time you have this problem Xbox refers you to this Repair and Replacement Specialist Team, So ive been through this process 2wice now it blows. Like you said So I don't want MS to just start it up and say, nope it didn't show the red lights, were not fixing it. I have confirmed with one of the Replacement Specialist Team Members that there will be all new GUTS on the interior not that I could confirm it or anything, hence it would void the warranty. But if im not satisfied with the console i will just send it back to them and request a REFUND! As much as I love my Xbox i cant go through this pain again! Six times being replaced! COME ON XBOX WHERES THE CUSTOMER SERVICE? OH YEAH I FORGOT THERE IS NONE! :( I guess if that happens i will have to buy a PS3! :D

i got 14 months on a refurb they sent me a couple of weeks ago, so i'm not sure how they come up with the extension. if they repaired yours instead of replacing it, maybe the extension is only 3 months.
but we're talking about the normal warranty. that's only 12 months when you buy the xbox new iirc. the 3 year warranty is rrod only, so i'm sure that will still apply to your unit. it just doesn't show up on the xbox support page.

spyder696969 01-28-09, 11:35 PM I just got my repaired console back and they included a 20 year, all-inclusive warranty that covers everything from RROD to Armageddon. I would certainly give someone a call. That is ridiculous. Mine showed billing information received on a Saturday night and it shipped out Monday with no problem. Yours should have shipped Monday or Tuesday at the latest. I would have been calling yesterday or even Tuesday afternoon.

1/21 - Console sent to repair
1/25 - Console Received
1/26 - Console Repaired
1/30 - Console shipped back
2/3 - Console Scheduled for Delivery
If I do get it today that will be 20 days without my 360.

I just barely got the same one back today as well, despite what I posted earlier about them sending me a DVD disc that I've never before owned, but that they said was supposedly inside my unit. It took them 5 entire days to repair mine...however it was an E74/0001 error, which is > 1000X worse than the typical 0102. (For what it's worth, I wasn't duped into paying them the $99 to fix it like so many others have fallen for. :D) Because of the multiple error codes, I was really hoping for a new unit and not one made from bits and pieces of those beyond the grave. :(
In a strange twist of events, the last unit that I sent in for repair died while this one was at the 360 hospital! It's getting completely re-balled sometime this week. Enough is enough!
babrown92 02-04-09, 12:52 AM Well so far so good. The console is 100% quieter than when I sent it in, what used to sound like a helicopter in my living room is now as quiet as my PS3! sweetness.
yamahaSHO 02-04-09, 08:18 AM I should have fixed mine myself. Although I got the same exterior case back, my fans are much louder than before and I have scuff marks, coupled with a dark black spot on the top of the case (when horizontal). I'm going to complain like a little bitchn until I get something worthwhile.
allornothing 02-04-09, 09:14 AM Looking for help, read a few dozen pages so far. My kids 360 got the one ring light and wouldn't come on. It showed E74 like some others have said. Did what xbox said, unplug everything and reattach and nothing. Now my son was in the middle of updating the software when it crashed. MS says 99 dollars which I objected to, the units only 13mos old. They said pull the hard drive off and see what happens, I did and the light doesn't come on, but the screen says "no hard drive attached" and it is looking for the hard drive. I was pushed up to a supervisor who walked me thru allthis and said a software specialist will be calling me tomorrow. Any info and help you can provide me before I speak to them tomorrow will be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how well you did the X-Clamp mod and how much/often you play. I've gotten 18 months to a few years out of my clamp-removed boxes. I typically get 4 hours of gaming in per day. Compare this to the 5 I've sent in to M$ that worked for a measly 2 months each and it's a no-brainer. Ideally, you'd want someone to re-flow (or even better, re-ball :)) the solder joints with real solder. I've never had a re-flowed machine fail, let alone a re-balled one.

I'm not familiar with re-flowed or re-balled Xbox 360 machines. Would you please care to explain it a bit?
Thanks.
spyder696969 02-08-09, 11:45 PM Re-flowing involves using a professional machine (NOT A HEAT GUN!) that heats up the solder and repairs finite cracks or imperfections that have come over time. Re-balling is where one would remove the crappy lead-free solder in the 360 and replace the solder "balls" with real solder. For the average person, either of these isn't a real option...the machines cost several hundreds of dollars! If possible, try to find someone in your area via a local internet site such as craigslist that does this service, though we are few and far between.
Onkyoman 02-09-09, 12:35 AM Thought I should add my voice to the list.
I just reported my 4th dead Xbox 360 yesterday. I argued valiantly last repair that I be sent a new unit rather than a refurb, insisting my odds would be better with the newest parts. They sent a refurb instead. I guess I'll never know -- and I'm not confident I will get a new system this time, either.
I am fairly certain the gentlemen who designed the 360 lost his job, but what is wrong with the service department? Maybe I'm wrong and the new chipsets are not more reliable, but why gamble when I'm costing them labour, parts and shipping for the 4th time?
Sigh. If only the PS3 had a comparable library and online component.

Will the E74 error message go away if you get the RRoD?
yamahaSHO 02-09-09, 12:55 PM Doesn't really matter... RROD = 3 year warranty.

Good information here, I looked it up and found someone on ebay claiming to perform Re-flowing for Xbox 360 motherboard.
Another question, have you have an experience with Re-flowing a unit which was fixed previously using Xclamp mod? Do you think re-flowing a unit which displays RROD after being previously fixed with Xclamp will really work?
Thanks.
spyder696969 02-09-09, 03:34 PM Will the E74 error message go away if you get the RRoD?
RRoD overrides E74, causing M$ to fix for free. (As they should!)

As to repairing ones that have had previous fixes, REAL re-flow machines/techniques can often overcome even the worst of the worst attempts by the king of all dumb-asses. (Not to imply that your repair is one of these or that you even live in that kingdom. ;))
I'd say just use the one you've got until it fails again (and it will, regardless of how well you did the X-Clamps...that's just the nature of the machine's piss-poor design/hardware) until seeking any other avenues.
Thebarnman 02-13-09, 12:12 AM A situation like this may have been posted, however here I go.
I bought an Xbox Elite a few months ago. HDMI from Xbox Elite, to Pioneer Elite HDMI receiver input to a Pioneer Elite Kuro HDMI input.
The other day I got the three red rings. I noticed right away the red rings came on when I switched the Pioneer Elite receiver to a totally different input. I've done this before while the Xbox was on and operating and never had a problem. So I turned off my Xbox Elite, Unplugged all the wires...reconnected them back together and everything was worked fine.
I'm thinking the Xbox Elite was trying to tell me that somehow it lost a "handshake" signal or that somehow it was determined that it lost it's flow of signal or something like that.
Just glad nothing was really bad or broke. Scared me at first since I bought the Elite to help prevent the three red rings.
spyder696969 02-13-09, 12:35 PM /\ What an "elitist" post! /\
There's absolutely nothing elite about the Xbox "Elite" at all. It has the exact same non-elite guts as most other blue-collar Xbox units. In many cases, it may be even less "elite" in the fact that many have the H79 DVD drive, which is one of, if not THE, very worst (read as, least elite) in existence!
Sure, it might think it's ultra high-class and therefore much more "elite" than all other scum-sucking, bottom-feeding "non-Elite" units, but in the end, it's nothing more than a non-elite unit in a pretty shell posing as something that it's not...which is "elite" in any way, shape, or form. :(
P.S. Elite! Elite! Elite! No matter how many times I say it, it's still the same box.

Welp, I will say that the reason I upgraded from my older Xbox 360 to the Elite, was to get the HDMI connection. Yes, I know there are other Xbox 360 units that have a HDMI connection, however my older one did not have one. I also liked the fact that it had the bigger hard drive. Yes I know that the other Xbox 360 units can be upgraded to a larger hard drive, but I thought, what the heck, why bother with that later. I also liked the fact that it was black...so that it matches most of my other equipment. Yes, I know that other Xbox 360 units can have different "face plates" with different colors. There was one that was dark, but it was not black. So I thought, what the heck, the Elite is really black and not only that, it's black around the whole unit..also it comes with the black controllers. Yes I know I could buy those black controllers separately, but then I thought, why bother? Then there's the fact that I really wanted the Elite because of it's redesigned motherboard that included the new 65-nm CPUs, making them quieter and cooler than than my older one. I also know that the Xbox 360 (you can call it the Premium or Pro) also came with the "Falcon" motherboard, but I thought...what the heck, I like the black unit better!
I don't know however if mine has the H79 DVD drive.
Overall, even at it's higher cost, I felt that the Elite was the way to go for me.
pgnewarkboy 02-19-09, 09:14 AM I had my XBOX 360 about 14 months before the red rings appeared. Microsoft fixed it quickly and at no cost and with no hassle. I got it back about 2 weeks ago. Is it possible they put in one of the new motherboards that generate less heat?

Yes, click here (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=xbox+360+0203).
Anybody can tell me how the Best Buy extended guarantee works? Can you return your RRODed console for a straight swap in-store or does it have to be sent away, is there a limit on returns? thanks

A reflow seems to be in order.
We have 2 xbox 360s in our household. One is about 4 years old and had the red rings twice and is possibly going in for repair at my cost. The newer unit which is 2 years old has been in 5x for red rings and is the primary unit played as it doesn't sound like an airport when being used. I have questioned Microsoft as to why I would not receive another 3 year warranty on the older unit if I pay for repair. What do you think? I f this unit breaks down every other month at 99 bucks, I might as well buy a Wii or an PS3 as it is a backup unit? I f it is repaired at 99 dollars...should it not receive a new warranty?
pgatour 02-21-09, 11:31 PM Personally, no, I don't think a refurb deserves a 3 year warranty. Honestly I wouldn't even pay Microsoft a dime. I would just wait for an Arcade to be sold down around $150 (Conns and Dell both had this price very recently) again and pick that up instead. Just move your hard drive over and you are ready to go. Its just a back up unit (or so it seems) so I wouldn't rush it in for repair.
I need to vent...
Im on my second console. I sold the first one after it was refurbed after a RRoD. I thought I was upgrading to an "Elite". Well I went on ebay and bought an elite with a manufacturer date of 1/08. Well last week 2/27/09 it died from an E74 error. I called microfruad and they told me I would have to pay 119$ to get it fixed. I do not get why they cant fix it for free since its only 13 months old. For a second I thought I was going to catch a break since I didn't buy it until May but was quickly shot down because I purchased it on ebay and was not the original owner. I don't think it should matter since its only 13 months old. Do any of you know of any way to file a compliant for this error so that it will fall under the RRoD clause. Apparently its almost as common as the RROD. Its still an equipment failure so its prettty much the same thing! Its such BS. Thanks for listening, I had to go somewhere, my wife is tired of hearing me complain about it.
WaldorfSalad 03-01-09, 04:05 PM My teenage son's XBox 360 is flashing the LED at the lower right of the power button and has an E74 error message on the screen.
We've tried restarting it, changing the AV cable, changing the switch between TV and HDTV, but no change.
Can someone point me in the right direction regarding how I could go about getting it fixed? Is it even fixable? Do we send it back to Microsoft?
Its about two years old and we don't have an extended warrany.
spyder696969 03-01-09, 07:36 PM E74 = Hana/Ana chip...the fix is often the same as RRoD, but not always.
E74 = $BIG BUCKS$ for M$. $120 is beyond ridiculous.
Two options:
1) Kill the box. Give it the warm and fuzzy treatment by wrapping it up all nice and snug in a blankie and let it cry for hours on end. When it finally goes to sleep and reverts to RRoD, let M$ fix it for free...as they should. 3 year warranty on RRoD, 0 year on everything else. :(
2) Have a knowledgable repairman reflow the H/A chip and be done with it. :)
WaldorfSalad 03-01-09, 08:19 PM Thanks spyder. I know how to use a soldering iron but my fifty year old eyes aren't what they used to be. What needs to be done to "reflow the H/A chip"?
There are people advertising XBox 360 RRoD repairs on my local Craig's List. Should I trust them with the repair?
pgatour 03-02-09, 12:32 AM I agree with Spyder. Force that thing into RROD and send it back. Mine was giving the occasional E74 for several months before it finally died.

You would need a machine, rather than a soldering iron...a professional "heat gun" of sorts. (This is a professional machine that costs hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, NOT the type of heat gun that far too many "repairmen" get at Harbor Freight for < $10 that looks like a hairdryer!)
If the locals are offering fixes on-line, call and ask what they do specifically for repairs. Don't ask, "Do you re-flow chips?" because they'll probably just say, "Uh, yeah, sure we do." It's most likely that they are simply replacing the X-Clamps, which is a good start, but many cases (like E74) require a more intensive method.
I got my XBox from Best Buy and bought the extended warranty. After about 9 months I got the 3 rings and I took it back to Best Buy without a receipt and they looked my info up. All I had to do was give them the XBOX, all cables, and controllers etc and they swapped it out for me in the store. I only had to pay like $6.00 and some tax. What it was, I bought another extended warranty and they pro-rated what was left on the old warranty. If that makes sense...?

So I gave it the blanket treatment and after about an hour the TV screen went blank and the left two lights on the power button started flashing. So, I turned it off and back on again. I had expected it to be flashing lights but instead the console appeared! I removed the blanket, it was very warm. Alas, it didn't last and soon reverted to the one flashing light in the lower right corner again. So, will try baking it again. How long should it take to get the RRoD using the bake-in-a-blanket method?
WaldorfSalad 03-07-09, 08:26 PM Update: After a few hours in the blankie the left two LEDs are flashing which is an overheat warning. Am I am on my way to the RRoD?

Let the unit cool for a couple of hours, then fire it up again and post what happens.
WaldorfSalad 03-07-09, 11:46 PM Let the unit cool for a couple of hours, then fire it up again and post what happens. When it goes into overheat mode and flashes the two lights, if I then turn it off and then back on again it works normally, even though it is very hot to the touch after being wrapped in a blanket. Its been working properly (unwrapped) for the past several hours. I'll turn it off and leave it turned off overnight and see what happens when I start it up again tomorrow.
P.S. After it went into overheat mode (after several hours wrapped in the blanket) I left it in overheat mode for a few more hours (still wrapped in blanket) to try and get it to go to RRoD but it just wouldn't.

The aptly-named "towel trick" has been around for a couple of years. Unfortunately, it's just what it says it is - "a trick" - a temporary solution and you're living on borrowed time from now on. My best advice is to dump that console upon GameStop/GameCrazy/Play-N-Trade as soon as possible.
newfmp3 03-10-09, 06:30 PM my 4th one died the other day. I now have had 2 consoles RROD, and 2 consoles with bad DVD drives
I have no warranty left.
My question is, are there any 60gig jaspers out yet? How do you tell it's a jasper without opening the box?

I'll take them off your hands if you want to get rid of them. PM me with your price, if interested. We could even work out a trade for a fully working console if that's more appealing to you.

I've only got one console, the rest were back and forth to MS with warranty work. But my warranty is now gone so I'm stuck with this brick.
I've got a x clamp coming for this one, going to try that, nothing to lose. In the meantime, I've gone to every store in town today, I can't find a jasper anywhere.

synnyster 03-16-09, 11:30 AM I just fixed my old 360 last night that had RRoD. I found an online how-to guide. All I did was buy a few screws and washers at Lowes. Hit up Fry's for some arctic silver. It took about 3 hours to complete. Most of the time was cleaning the CPU and GPU after removing the heatsinks. Got it back up and running. I played NG2 on it for about 15 minutes. It seems to work fine.

Spyder, your comments? :D
spyder696969 03-17-09, 02:54 AM Spyder, your comments? :D
synnyster used the good ol' X-Clamp repair. (Appears to be lawdawg's ancient method, by his Lowe's description.) To those that don't have re-flow stations, it's the only solution. Unfortunately, this repair doesn't always last too long, as there are dozens of variations and mutations that are available online...some FAR better than others. It's also incredibly easy to torque the bolts down too tight, thus obliterating the integrity of the solder balls and making the console irreparable in the future. A typical X-Clamp replacement takes me under 7 minutes these days. :)
For those that are willing to venture down this winding path, Zippo lighter fluid works wonders and is 1000X better than alcohol for old thermal paste removal. What isn't mentioned in synnyster's comments is that you'll need a T-10 and a T-8 Torx screwdriver and/or bits to get the case open. An opening tool also helps...at least if you don't want to rape the shell.

I don't feel comfortable selling it on eBay or taking it to GameStop/GameCrazy/Play-N-Trade as I would hate for some kid (like my teenage son) to buy it and have it go bad on them.
Anyone here in the Boulder-Denver area have any experience fixing the E74 error? I found a guy advertising on Denver Craig's List that seems to know what he's talking about but he's only fixed true RRoDs and no E74s.

WaldorfSalad, have you try calling MS? I purchased my 360 back in 2006, after one year I got the RRoD. Called MS and was covered under warranty. A year later 2008, I was having issues at times were the 360 can't read the disc (Disc Error Message) and E74 code would show up. For a month I have try the towel trick to keep it going. I started to get frustrated with the problem and decided to call MS. I explain to them that the 360 intermittantly is having the RRoD again (even though it wasn't) and also the disc error and E74 code. I was sent a coffin to return my 360 under warranty. Long story short, call MS and tell them that you are having the RRoR (Red Ring of Death). They will have you do some test steps like unplug power supply, if the power supply light is red or yellow and to remove your HD, etc...

You didn't need to wait. For the future, just log into support.xbox.com and say its a 3 red ring issue. Select for a box to be sent to you. Send your box in and they'll fix it. Don't bother calling MS, it is a waste of time trying to talk to those folks.
I sent mine last week, they got it Friday, started the repair and it has been shipped back to me today. They probably just swapped it out for a refurb'd unit since it took them no time at all before it was marked as being shipped back with a new repair warranty assigned to it.

does anyone know what it means? i would like to try to get it to plays for a little bit before i send it back.
also when i called to get the registration transferred to my name xbox peeps said i could purchase a one year warranty for $24.99 cause it still is under warranty till 4/3/09. so if your warranty is up you may be able to purchase they extended warranty.

How long did it take you to think of that one smart guy?
However long it took me to come up with that, it was quicker than you, seeing as how you are the one with the refurb dead 360.
Malcolm_B 04-01-09, 11:34 PM Took my box to the UPS Store and the guy behind the counter immediately said: "Another one bites the dust, huh?"
Me: "Oh, you recognize this..."
UPS Guy: "Oh, yeah."

spyder696969 04-02-09, 10:24 AM I'M SO FRUSTRATED!!!!
So i got my first xbox from an ebay refurbished store which was totally a stupid thing to do. I received it mmmm bout 2 & 1/2 weeks after they SAID they sent it(the first problem with the ebay store: xboxrefurbished Seller User ID: sanctuaryatmeade29 FYI don't buy ANYTHING from them THEY SUCKKKK) ok so i got it 3/5/09 and today i was playing afro samurai when all of a sudden(during a boss fight) the stupid thing froze after screaming for a minute i turned it off & on then i got the red rings in slots 1,3, & 4. i called the stupid lady from the stupid ebay store and thank someone it's still under their 30 day warranty so i'm waiting for a ups label so they can send me a replacement. i tried the trick from the very first post of this thread if that still works but all 4 slots flash red fast after doing it. what does that mean cause to me the code looked like 0000 if there is such a code it wasn't listed.
does anyone know what it means? i would like to try to get it to plays for a little bit before i send it back.
also when i called to get the registration transferred to my name xbox peeps said i could purchase a one year warranty for $24.99 cause it still is under warranty till 4/3/09. so if your warranty is up you may be able to purchase they extended warranty.
ANY ADVISE?
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. :o
If you're getting code 0000, then your AV cable is likely toast. Recommend trying a different cable to extract the code. If that doesn't resolve your issue, then it's possible that the cable is either simply not connected properly or that you're missing something in the extraction process.

Malcolm_B 04-02-09, 05:01 PM I bet the TX-bound sticker as well as that white box is a giveaway to those guys.

True but a white box of the same size and color as all the other xbox repairs then it really isn't much of a shot in the dark to guess what it is.
MikeAlletto 04-03-09, 01:17 PM When UPS delivered my fixed one back to me he said to my fiance:
"I bet someone is waiting for this".
So yeah, they know what they are.
