View Full Version : What movies are you waiting for on Blu-Ray?
mello 1 09-01-06, 06:25 PM I probably won't buy any of the single layer mpeg-2 releases. What I'm really waiting for is:
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Band of Brothers
The Pixar movies
Pulp Fiction
Batman Begins
Spiderman 1&2
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
The Matrix
Hopefully they will all be on 50gig dual-layer discs with Mpeg-4 compression.
hassoon 09-01-06, 06:47 PM - The Spider-man movies
- The X-men movies
- LOTR trilogy
- Matrix trilogy
- Men in Black
- Pirates of the Caribbean 2
- Re-encoded, cleaned up version of The Fifth Element
- King Kong (I'll buy it on either format, whichever looks better)
- Munich (one of my all time favorites)
- Kingdom of Heaven (can't wait for this one)
I know King Kong's slated for HD-DVD, but I own an Xbox 360, and more than likely I'm gonna end up buying the HD-DVD add-on for it. I'm also looking forward to the PS3 at launch.
EDIT: I'm also hoping that all of the above will be encoded in either AVC or VC-1, whichever produces better results. Not to mention lossless audio.
Good times ahead!
LOTR....50gb with lossless 7.1
Kill Bill 1@2
Tombstone
Matrix trilogy
Fifth Element....done right this time
Pirates of the Caribbean 1/2/3

Something with PQ at least equivalent to HD-DVD?
I'll be buying some of the Fox and Disney titles for sure. Once Sony and Lions Gate get their PQ issues sorted out I'll buy their discs as well.
eightninesuited 09-04-06, 01:25 AM http://www.gladiatorstories.com/images/maximus3.jpg
I can't wait for Gladiator on Blu-Ray. Imagines 7.1 discrete DTS Master Audio of the Collessium. And of course high definition PQ revealing people wearing Timex Indiglo watches among the crowd. :D
anilrao 09-04-06, 10:39 PM My top three.
2001: A Space Odyssey
My Fair Lady
Lawrence of Arabia
hassoon 09-04-06, 11:10 PM I'll be buying some of the Fox and Disney titles for sure. Once Sony and Lions Gate get their PQ issues sorted out I'll buy their discs as well.
I certainly hope that Lions Gate would get their act together as well.
I just saw Crank in the theatres a few days ago, and I must say that it would make for a FANTASTIC HD presentation. The film's picture was nearly flawless, with not a speck of grain to be found. Stylized direction, lots of color, and fast moving scenes would definitely make this fine demo material if encoded and transferred properly.
Being a Lions Gate film, I'd imagine it's only coming out on Blu-ray.
Here's hoping that they would go with VC-1/AVC for this one...
WriteSimple 09-05-06, 04:23 PM I haven't checked the list of movies of other people have given on this thread. But among the thousands of movies that I look forward to seeing on BD, two of them has to be Pleasantville and Down With Love.
Leftfield, I know. But great moviemaking and pure eye-candy to boot!
fuad
I wanted X-Men day and date release but I guess its not happening.
Star Wars Trilogy
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Sin City
Desperado
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Harry Potter films (the later ones, more specifically)
The Matrix
The Lord of the Rings
Pirates of the Caribbean films
Rachael Bellomy 09-08-06, 12:29 PM In general I'm on the wait to see how VC-1 and mpeg4 work out. I want Master And Comander to compare against the D-VHS tape.

I love that movie!!!
WriteSimple 09-08-06, 02:56 PM Except for Best Buy Brian who will buy all of those movies he listed (BB must be giving him a great discount), nobody else wanted to get the Mission: Impossible box set. Isn't that like one of the big test of the formats?
Saw another movie tonight that I'd love to get on BD - El Hijo Del La Novia aka Son Of The Bride.

gonzalc3 09-08-06, 03:13 PM The Star Wars Saga
James Bond Films

Batman Begins
Pirates of the Caribbean

The Matrix Trilogy
Indiana Jones Trilogy
The Spiderman movies
X-men series
What movies are you waiting for on Blu-Ray?.
#1 No movies in particular, but for starters better caretaking, better masters, better encoding (VC-1) and preferably BD-50 (to the insiders, please note i'm not a candidate for double dipping any more :p ).
#2 pricetag under $299 for a premium player
By then hopefully #1 will be sorted out.
I wouldn't buy but a dozen or so titles over several years and assuming Fox stayed blu-ray-only i'd pickup POTA original and maybe EP4-6 (might even just netflix those).
longshot 09-08-06, 04:49 PM I Robot
Gladiator
DaVinci Code
Cars
Casino Royale
Chronicles of Narnia
Last of the Mohicans

Evereybody seems to want LOTR :)
of course...
WriteSimple 09-08-06, 05:39 PM Evereybody seems to want LOTR :)
Yep. I'd double-BD-dip for the theatrical and EE versions. But it should have the best possible video and lossless audio at original sampling rate (not 16-bit).
I can just imagine it now - tissues at end of FOTR, tissues at Gollum-Smeagol in TT, and a whole damn box for ROTK. :D :D :D
fuad
ottscay 09-08-06, 06:46 PM Except for Best Buy Brian who will buy all of those movies he listed?
I will buy Kingdom of Heaven even if I don't have a player yet (although that'll be the impetus to get one if I don't).
Others I'll buy when I get a player:
The Big Hit (Sony)
Dinosaur (Buena Vista)
A Knight's Tale (Sony)
S.W.A.T. (Sony)
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (Warner)
The Italian Job (2003) (Paramount)

txfilmguy 09-10-06, 11:35 PM I'm surprised no one is putting up a fit for "Attack of the Killer Tomatos"
Monty22001 09-11-06, 05:55 AM Master and Commander will be a great one, I hope they can do the foggy scenes in the early parts with no banding.
Star Wars and Indiana Jones, of course. Alien quadrilogy... Jurassic Park.. Those just off the top of my head.
WriteSimple 09-11-06, 12:44 PM Jurassic Park... Hmmm. I think Sony released that in Japan on DVD, even Superbit.
fuad
Isn't Star Trek Paramount?
I'll take those.
alfbinet 09-12-06, 11:24 AM I'm surprised no one is putting up a fit for "Attack of the Killer Tomatos"
I can do you one better I think, (don't know what your proclivities are for film) but how about "Killer Klowns from Outer Space?" One of the all time worst movies I have ever seen in my life.
Tolstoi 09-12-06, 01:53 PM Anything on dual layer disks.
All Six Star Wars
All Star Trek
All Pirates o.t.c movies
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Matrix Trilogy

All Harry Potter
Alien Quadrilogy
Stargate (The movie)
2010
Starship Troopers
Contact
War of the Worlds
Terminator 3
Maybe 3 or 4 Bond movies
I'm buying all of these on BLU RAY:
Dude, you have way too much disposable income!
Did you copy and paste that list from Wikipedia?
I can't say I'm waiting for a particular title, or looking forward if that's what was meant. I just want my favourite films with a great PQ and extras, no real point listing the films I like.
Casino Royale
The Peter Sellers one with Woody Allen? :p No seriously the trailer for the upcoming Bond film makes it look a little darker. Should be a good thing. I too will pick this up on BD.
In addition to movies, I'm looking forward to TV series released in HD. In Norway, Smallville, for example, is shown in 4:3 stereo only. I've downloaded a few episodes to get it in 16:9, but the quality just didn't hold up. So I've only seen the first season, holding out for it in HD on Blu-ray. The same goes for quite a few other shows, too. (Mostly Sci-Fi :))
I would be willing to think about TV shows also. Galactica would be one.
snickersbar 05-01-07, 08:29 PM Which BD titles are YOU waiting for most. List them and also list the studio name in parenthesis if you know it so we know what the liklihood of BD release is as well as the announced tentative release date if its already been announced:
1) WAY OF THE GUN (?)
2) Kill Bill (BD - Sep 2007)
3) Heat (BD - 2008)
4) Lord of the Rings (?)
5) Star Wars!

HiDef Bob 09-29-07, 04:44 PM "Across the Universe"!
I saw the movie yesterday ... amazing, extraordinary!
The graphics, the choreography ... and of course the music! This is one movie I would play over and over!
RayPaganJr 09-29-07, 05:16 PM I would like to see The Last Emporer; West Side Story; Raging Bull; Forest Gump; Amadeus. This is just to name a few that I didn't see on anyone's list.

Pixar stuff
Matrix (just the first one =)
Ergoguy34 09-29-07, 10:02 PM I have over 20 BD titles on order and I am waiting for all of them, but I would really like to see Gladiator and the star wars movies, Transformers would be cool as well but Im not waiting, so I had to order the HD DVD version..
TheCuze 09-30-07, 02:12 PM There aren't many movies I'd double-dip for without a ton of new extras, so here's the short list of films I'd like to see in Blu:
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (I think we'll see it next year sometime, I just hope the HD-DVD won't force these releases to be solely theatrical versions or split onto 2 Bd-25s like Alexander. Unlike the red side, Blu-Ray can handle the entire extended cuts WITH pcm AND the theatrical presentations via seamless branching, so let's please make use of this)
Grindhouse (Weinstein...we all know you're coming to the dark side, and how about some seamless branching to include those extended cuts?)
Kill Bill (The Whole Bloody Affair maybe?)
Magnolia
Boogie Nights
Star Wars Saga
Three Kings
The Darjeeling Limited (fingers crossed now that Fox is back)
Saving Private Ryan
Minority Report (I only have a fullscreen version, so the double-dip is a must)
Alien Quadrilogy
3:10 To Yuma
John Rambo (have you seen that trailer? lol)
Plus, let's get some Criterion loving in this HD world
AaronSCH 09-30-07, 02:48 PM "Across the Universe"!
I saw the movie yesterday ... amazing, extraordinary!
The graphics, the choreography ... and of course the music! This is one movie I would play over and over!
Wow Bob... did we see the same movie yesterday? I am a huge Beatles fan but I thought "Across the Universe" was God awful... it just didn't work. It felt like the director, Julie Tamor tried to cram so many songs in the film that, for me anyway, almost every time you heard a music cue, the film came to a crashing halt. It was excruciating in its lack of energy and a very pale imitation of Milos Forman's exceptional adaptation of "Hair." It was also a rather sophmoric view of the 1960's. The screenplay was filled with so many laughable stereotypes and under-developed characters that I left the theater shaking my head. I would rather hop on a plane and see The Beatle's "Love" in Las Vegas again ...at least the original artists can be heard. This one is a rental if you are drinking something caffeinated!

I feel ya on LOTR but we all know they're going to force a double dip on this.
Theatrical first. Too much money to be made for them not to.
TheCuze 10-01-07, 09:39 PM I just hope the Lord of the Rings movies don't end up split up on two discs. I did the math, and Return of the King can definatelly fit onto one BD-50 with TrueHD, 3 dolby tracks, and PiP, so I hope they go that route.
MARINECOP 10-01-07, 09:45 PM Jaws because it is my favorite movie of all time and the Hulk because he is my favorite comic book character.
Yes no doubt, JOHN RAMBO! and also double dips on Rambo 2 & 3.
Sly's the man!
shadowrage 10-16-07, 11:39 PM Blade Trilogy.
I bet this is among New Line's first catalogue catalogues.(PL doesnt really count)
zinfamous 10-17-07, 12:40 AM I've searched all over, but haven't heard any updates on
Lawrence of Arabia
Band of Brothers
probably the 2 I'm most looking forward to
I'd also like to see Criterion join the game, as mentioned ...but I don't see myself doubling up my Fellini anytime soon....
Any word if Rambo 3 will ever see the light of day again...you know...the one where he aids the Taliban freedom fighters in rescuing Afghanistan from those commie Soviets? great stuff! ;)

Neo1965 10-17-07, 09:43 AM "Across the Universe"!
I saw the movie yesterday ... amazing, extraordinary!
The graphics, the choreography ... and of course the music! This is one movie I would play over and over!
+1 for Across the Universe.
Have to watch it again at home.
But only because the people to my right and behind me thought the movie was a singalong and it was a strange feeling, liking the songs, yet having these obviously much older people actually having a good time and singing the words to the songs I am already very familiar with.
Now if it was kids, you sort of get it, kids will be kids, but people in their 50s seems to genuinely enjoy this one and it's not normal to have people in their 50s sing in the theatres.
Btw, I'm shocked that Long and Winding Road was not part of this sappy movie.

How big do you think blu-ray discs are? :p
I think that they are at least large enough to carry a whole season of a TV show in 480P. They should handle many series as well.
