View Full Version : Optoma H79/H78/77 Bulb is replaceable!
tehotaone 09-01-06, 09:04 PM Guys, I can't link it here due to rules, but there is a store selling PERFECT replacement "bulbs only" for the Optoma line and others
You have to remove 4 screws and disconnect the leads on the factory cage, but it is easy. Please be sure and not touch the exposed element during the process. This will deposit oils which leads to premature failure from uneven heating.
It is the actual same bulb, part number, everything.

I bought another just now for.......110.00 shipped!!! So two brand new bulbs for 224.00 shipped.
The original bulb was very "frosty" at the base where the light comes from with 700hrs, the new one is crystal clear...the pic is as new!!!
I am so thrilled I wanted to share...I have two now which will hold me over til' 1080p is affordable.
Do a search on EBAY for "NEW TOP-222 UHP 250W" and you'll find the seller with a few of the same item.
This also proves that any PJ that uses a "top-222" bulb can be swapped into the Optoma cage.
...hopefully this won't get removed.... and maybe save me one more :)

KramerTC 09-01-06, 09:16 PM Great find. I purchased a H78 w/an extra bulb I from Projector People. I plan to hold on to this projector until 1080P FP is at current 720P prices. Hope this thread doesn't get locked or deleted.
Gary Lightfoot 09-02-06, 11:52 AM How does it compare to the original lamp? Identical would you say (only brighter)?
Gary
KramerTC 09-02-06, 01:17 PM If it is the same bulb/part # then there should be no difference. Right??
guitarman 09-02-06, 01:25 PM Sure is a economical solution for very cheap usage of the H7x's. Four for the price of one.
I bought a replacement lamp on ebay for an infocus TV and saved $400. There is a HUGE markup on these UHP lamps.
Uatatoka 09-02-06, 02:44 PM Good find. I'm curious to what my HD72 has now, and if there is a comparable solution. I had a feeling too much $ was being made on UHP replacements....
Dean Prestholt 09-02-06, 02:44 PM Would that work on the Optoma HD7100?
tehotaone 09-02-06, 05:03 PM The 7100 uses P-VIP bulbs, so no it wont...
For any other PJ:
Pull the lamp and look at it, the three digit "222" is the style from what I gather.
As long as it is the same wattage and UHP you will be fine, of course it has to fit. :)
In the H7* series this bulb I bought is identical ad she looks like the day I bought it all over again, 100.00 a year is not bad at all.
I am temped to buy one more...
Resale with at least one spare would be worth it.

Big Lebowski 09-03-06, 06:31 AM Optoma has definitely huge markup on these lamps. I'm starting to wonder if their cheap projectors and low _real_ lamp lifes are related. Obiviously projectors are sold with minimal profit and real profit is made by selling lamps. Just like those inkjet printers, they cost almost nothing but maintenance costs is huge when you need to buy ink all the time.
Rebuilt bulbs are nothing new. The question is how long will it last. Sometimes it will last just as long while others will last less than 90D. Good luck.
BIGmouthinDC 09-03-06, 12:55 PM Just pulled my used 79 bulb and yup looks like the one all right, thanks

Are these bulbs rebuilt? From the description they are advertised as brand new. There's nothing to indicate rebuilt or refurbished.
tehotaone 09-03-06, 03:30 PM These are not Rebuilt, they are "pulls" from Dell 4100s that share the same cartridge, and let me tell you whatever the condition or circumstance for a 220.00 I have 3 years of bulbs on the low side.
It looks brand new again.

Assuming it is the same seller on ebay: I emailed them a while back regarding how the bulb could be " Brand new" and a "pull" at the same time... no answer. Let us know how it is working for you...
kpepling 09-24-06, 11:43 PM Has anyone else bought one of these? I was thinking of ordering a few for backup. How hard is it to change the bulb out of the case?
TomHuffman 09-25-06, 01:15 AM I did.
These are NOT new bulbs. They have been pulled from Dell PJs and may have many hours of previous use. The bulb I got had less light output than the 1000 + hr bulb I was trying to replace.
I'm returning the bulb for a refund.
Buyer Beware.
Thanks for your feedback on this. I was looking at these. Anyway to get these NEW from another source? They have to make them somewhere! SJ
great find! my first H78 bulb lasted 270 hours so this is welcome assuming new bulb is attained (can't be worse)!
kpepling 09-26-06, 02:01 PM Since these don't seem like a good option does anyone know of a place to buy cheap bulbs? Anyway we can get a powerbuy on these from anywhere?

We could contact Philips and ask for a quote. I have a feeling we together could put in an order for 50-100 if the price is right.
The other option would be to ask AVS or one of the sponsors who is doing a lot of business with Optoma for a two-for-one campaign, considering the short life span of the lamp. This way everybody would be happy?

That sounds like a very good idea, How about it AVS?
Chris Cunanan 10-06-06, 04:08 PM If these Dell 4100MP bulbs are the same ones used on the Optoma, one cheaper alternative is to purchase a new Dell 4100MP lamp and use the bulb whenever it's needed for the Optoma H7*.
Still cheaper by at about $100 compared to purchasing an Optoma projector lamp, right? And we're assured that the bulb is new. The Dell lamps sell for $250 in Ebay maybe cheaper elsewhere.
Greg099 11-04-06, 09:21 PM I really can't believe we are still dealing with this issue with the Optoma replacement lamps. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of.
I had several conversations with Optoma support last year and even had them agree to send me one for cost (which never materialized, by the way.) When I wrote the support guy asking where my replacement lamp was, he never even responded. So much for support.
I can't believe anyone who has read about these problems would even consider buying from Optoma, regardless how great their newer models appear to be. They have clearly shown themselves to be a company that cannot be trusted. The obviously don't give a crap about their customers satisfaction.
The lamp I just purchased is already failing, and I am over it. I'm calling first thing next week to buy a new projector from any other manufacturer other than Optoma. If anyone wants a deal on a used H77 drop me a message. Buyer beware!
Cheers,
Greg

Any progress made on this suggestion? I would definitely get in on it if someone were to do it - it would be nice to have a couple spares sitting around, especially for a highly reduced price.
rajdude 01-03-07, 01:08 PM so what happened?
These things have been wiped off the face of e-bay or what ?
Cant find them anymore
....was this a scam???

The ebay ones were used.
Another intresting discussing is on:

If we can get the Optoma Hxx users and the mitsu users together,we should be able to place a substantial order.
I've never been able to find where you could actually purchase the bulb (except eBAY). Heck, they make them in Belgium and some distributer must have them. I would purchase several if the price were right. SJ
Has anyone investigated buying replacement bulbs from chinese manufacturers? I've found a couple of websites for manufacturers who claim to be able to supply 250W UHP bulbs. I've e-mailed one to see if they can make a bulb for the H78, and am awaiting a reply. Of course, even if they are available, I have no idea what they will cost per bulb, what the minimum order will be, etc.
Hi, I was able to get original Philips bulbs. Please look at my post in "Optoma H77 Review & Screenshots", Thread: 849695, post:#3646. Sorry, system did not let me to post direct link. Artur
