I’ve been researching a replacement AVR for my 5 year old Yamaha RXV-596 as I wanted to use the HDMI capabilities to output the audio and video from my Toshiba HD DVD player and DirecTV HD-PVR onto my Sony 60 inch XS TV. I had narrowed my search down to the Yamaha RXV-1600, RXV-2600, HTR-5990 or the Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV. I was concerned with the size of the Pioneer receivers as they are both tall and deep and space was an issue in my built in cabinet.

I had read in several other posts that the RXV-1600 and 2600 are being replaced later this month with the RXV-1700 and 2700. I went to BB to demo to HTR-5990 and discovered that they were on clearance and that the new HTR-6090 was on display for less than a thousand dollars. I took advantage of the 3 year no interest deal and a 4 yr warranty for $34.00.

A few of the differences between the HTR-5990 and the HTR-6090 from comparing the owner’s manuals include:
1. Dynamic Headroom 1.1 dB on the 6090. The 5990 had 1.03dB
2. Dampening Factor (IHF) 150 or More on the 6090. The 5990 had 140 or more
3. Maximum Input Signal on the PHONO is 60mV on the 6090. The 5990 has 100mV
4. The total weight of the 5990 to the 6090 has dropped by 1 pound from 37 lbs. to 36 lbs.
5. The 6090 has full pass through of 1080P video signals whereas the 5990 can only do 1080i.
6. Yamaha’s proprietary iPod docking system. Using Yamaha's YDS-10SL iPod docking system you can connect your iPod to the receiver, control it, and charge it all at once.

A few features from the 5990 have been removed in order to keep the pricing at a reasonable level.
1. The 6090 looses THX Select 2 Certification
2. The Front Speaker "B" Channel is gone (I used these to send the audio output to my Patio – On the 6090 I’m using the Zone 2 for this process now – pretty neat feature as I can send a different source to the patio than what I’m listening to in the family room)
3. Advanced Install Controls are gone. This included RS-232 input for advanced remote control systems, and the 12V triggers used to trigger other electronics in the room to turn on or off.

The Specs for the HTR-6090 from BB site are:
• 840 watts of total power: 120 watts x 7 @ 8 ohms, 0.04% THD
• Surround sound decoders: Dolby Digital, Pro Logic, DTS, DTS-ES Discrete and Matrix 6.1, Neo:6 and 96/24
• 23 DSP sound fields
• XM HD surround
• Video up-conversion automatically converts the input signal (composite video to S-video or S-video to composite video) to match your TV input
• HDTV-compatible component video output ensures compatibility with HDTV monitors and HDTV’s
• Exclusive YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) automatically optimizes receiver output to sound for the room acoustics, checking and adjusting for speaker connections, distances, size, frequency response and sound pressure level
• AM/FM tuner with 40 station presets
• Multi-zone capability reproduces separate input sources in the main room and second room (zone 2)
• Inputs: 2 HDMI, 5 optical digital, 3 coaxial digital, 4 stereo audio, 6 A/V (1 front, 5 rear), 6 S-video, 3 component video, RF
• Outputs: 1 HDMI, 2 stereo audio, 2 A/V, 3 S-video, 1 component video, 3 composite video, 2 optical digital, headphone
• Universal remote included

It took me about an hour to set up the receiver and I was quite amazed at how easy the speaker configuration was with the YPAO process. I had a little bit of trouble getting the receiver and my HDMI components to talk to one another. As soon as I powered everything off, unplugged the power cords and plugged them back in I was in business. The sound quality is awesome from my HD-DVD player for DD, DTS, DD+ and Dolby True HD. This receiver brought new life to my home theater and Tanoy speakers

I just saw this receiver at my local BB and it really piqued my interest. I was considering either the Onkyo TX-SR803 or the Pioneer 1016 until I saw this one. Re: Video upconversion, will it upconvert composite to component or composite and/component to HDMI (480p)? What about going from HDMI to Component? My goal is to upgrade my Sony STR-DE995 receiver to a better sounding one with more digital audio inputs and, at a lesser priority, HDMI.

Thanks!

How hot does it get after it's been running awhile?

It does get a bit warmer than my old amp but not too bad. I've got an inch of clearance all around and that seem to be ok. I've had it on for 7 hours and it seems to be doing fine.

BigFella,

From looking through the manual I don't think it will downconvert the HDMI to Component. HDMI can only be passed through to HDMI.

Just finished watching Jarhead in HD-DVD...very nice! :)

I've heard that Klipsch speakers and Yamaha receivers aren't a good combination. Is this true? I am looking at getting the 6090 and want to be able to use my Klipsch speakers with it. Any input would be appreciated.

Sorry, I've never used Klipsch speakers in combination with a Yamaha amp. I have used JBL, Yamaha, Polk and currently use Tannoy speakers...

Ciscokid54,

If you read through the manual you will see the setup is very simple and you have many display options including connecting your TV, Samsung DVD player and PS3 via HDMI,Component Video as well as whether or not you want to connect the audio via HDMI, Optical or analog.

The one thing to remember with HDMI is to be sure to turn off all of the devices before connecting or disconnecting the HDMI cables otherwise you may encounter the dreaded HDMI handshake issue (they wont talk to each other). The other thing I learned was to be sure to set the audio output / input options correctly in both your amp and device.

Enjoy!

I have a 5660 with Klipsch f2s in the front and f1s in the rear and well forgot what center I have but its big too. They sound awesome. Klipsch speakers are very efficient so much so that I have never made it to the positive decibel side of the volumn control. I love the speakers so much that i will probably upgrade to the reference speakers when BB/ magnolia gets them! Oh yeah thats the first time I heard about the yamaha klipsch thing. BB has all the klipsch speakers hooked up with yamaha receivers.

I would definitly recommend it.

Yamaha did remove the THX Select2 Certification. However, the HDMI switching does support 1080p, which I think is a plus!

I run the fan continously on my 5990 and highly recommend it...every little helps, assuming they kept this feature in the 6090.

Excellent synopsis on the model change over. The IPOD Dock is a cool improvement over the 5990.

You are correct that HDMI ins can not be converted to component outs.

I saw this receiver today at BB and Frys. It was the same price at both places - a small discount from MSRP.

I found that the bottom of the left side of the chassis (the area below the transformer) gets very hot. Otherwise I liked it a lot. I'm trying to decide between this receiver and the Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV.

It does get a bit warm but if you leave about an inch of room all around you should be fine. I was also interested in the Pioneer Elite VSX-81 and the 82 models. The only problem I had with the Pioneers is that they are over 18.5 inches deep and stand about 7.5 inches high which would have required me to cut into my cabinet to fit the receiver in...

Good luck both the Yamaha and Pioneer receivers are very nice.

Is the RX-V2700 better than the HTR-6090? I know that the RX can upconvert to 1080, but other than that is it better, or are they about the same? I don't care much about the upconversion since I have cable HD and a Toshiba HD-A1 and my TV only accepts 1080i input. I'm also considering going with the HTR-5990 since it's cheaper some places now.

I think the HTR-6090 is more comparable to the RX-V1700 than the 2700. I have the HTR-6090 connected to my Sony 60 inch Rear Projection LCD TV (1080i) via HDMI and I run my Toshiba HD-A1 to the HTR-6090 via HDMI as well. My DirecTV HD PVR is connected directly to the TV via HDMI as well since I didnt want to have the receiver on all the time.

I chose to go with the HTR-6090 over the HTR-5990 because there were some enhancements made with regard to the YPAO configuration as well as the upconversion.

Dont forget "What is the difference between the RX-V line and the HTR line AV receivers ?" http://www.yamaha.com/yec/faq/faqdetail.html?CNTID=205010&CNTYP=KNOWLEDGE_ITEM

There are many similarities between these two product lines. The RX-V line and the HTR line are produced in the same Yamaha factory using the same high quality parts throughout. The RX-V and equivalent HTR models have the same warranty periods; the same manufacturers suggested retail price, the same features, and the same remote control units. There is a cosmetic difference found on the front panels of these two lines. The RX-V line maintains the traditional white colored lettering normally found on most Yamaha components, while the HTR line provides a slightly different approach. Yamaha has created a new look by using gold colored lettering in selected areas on the HTR receiver series. However, both the RX-V line and the HTR line feature the same high quality black metal front panel construction. The amplifiers in the HTR and RX-V units are identical but rated differently to comply with the accepted measurement standards of their respective channels of distribution. Both ratings are FTC approved and are designed to handle the dynamics of today's audio and video sources. The RX-V line has the power amplifiers rated from 20-20000 Hz. The HTR line has the power amplifiers rated at 1000 Hz. Both lines can reproduce the full frequency response of 20-20000 Hz. The RX-V line is typically sold through Yamaha authorized audio/video specialty retailers, and is not available for mail order sales. The HTR line is sold through mass merchants, catalog retailers, and department stores. You may also purchase the HTR line through the mail. All transactions must be done through the authorized Yamaha dealer network. Any purchase made from an unauthorized dealer/retailer voids the Yamaha manufacturer's warranty.

For those with the 6090, how would you rate the quality of the upconversion?

I'm weighing both the RX-V2700 and the HTR-6090 for my new home theatre. The 2700 has an ABT processor, whereas the 6090 doesn't, but it may not make any difference on my 50" 720p plasma. I do have digital cable and need to do some processing so the Sci-Fi channel looks better.

Any thoughts?

I actually picked up a 6090 about two weeks ago and I'm running it with the following all Klipsch setup:

Mains: RF-7's
Center: RC-64
Surrounds: RS-7's
Subwoofer: Dual RSW-15's

I think this receiver sounds fantastic with my setup. The high current amplifier is especially welcomed with my mains as the imped. can drop down to about 2 ohm in certain areas of the lower frequencies. I've noticed the bass response has increased on a massive scale as opposed to my Pioneer VSX-D811S which preceeded the Yamaha.

Klipsch aside however, I really do enjoy the extra features this amp offers. The video upconversion through HDMI and Component Video plus the on-screen menus are a real positive. As opposed to the 5990, I don't think I really miss the THX EQ's given the usefulness of the upgrades in most every other area. If you can find a BB in your area that actually has one in stock or can get one at the moment, I say definitely go check it out. Worth every penny I paid for it.

Yes it will upconvert composite to component and composite up to HDMI. you can set up the parameters in the setup menu manually.

Hello all,

I just picked up the 6090 reciever from bb a few days ago, will probably hook it up this weekend.

One disapointing thing I've found already though in reading about the upconversion in the manual... I was sold on this reciever because I figured it would simplify my setup and set me up to be ready for 1080p sources like when i finally get a blueray... I would simply connect one hdmi cable from the reciever to my tv, and leave my tv on digital in 1. Then plug in my hdmi dvd player and component DVR box and component xbox360 and use the reciever to switch sources. No more switching tv input hoorayyy!!! WRONG...

In the manual it states that anything converted from the component ports to the hdmi out ports will come out 480i or 480p WHAT!?!?!? My xbox and DVR will be DOWNCOVERTED from 1080i to 480?!?!?! The manual even states "there may be some loss of video quality". Who ever heard of a down-converting reciever? pfffft, the guy who engineerd this should be slapped in the back of the head.

Oh well, i guess i will have to go component to the tv also for the xbox and DVR and switch tv inputs back and forth. Time to pick up a learning remote.

It was just really disapointing to see this after the bb guy and I spent like 10 minutes talking about how cool and simple and elegant my system would be using just the hdmi out of the reciever.

Other than that I'm sure I'll love the reciever.

BTW, I'm new to the forums so hello everyone!

Last I checked, all HTR models have plastic front pannel constuction. The 58XX line from last year had all metal front.

BTW, has anyone seen these in Canada yet? Does BB in Canada plans to carry them? I know some of you here are BB employees, who can maybe shed some light.

I also just purchased the 6090 and connected it in my HT which includes the most recent Comcast HD/DVR and XBox-360 to my 42" Sony LCD rear projection.

I'm quite happy with this unit but ran into an issue where when connecting the DVR to 6090 via HDMI and then HDMI to TV, I got a copy protection warning and said to use Component cables -- then the video displayed went to a "green screen". I have since routed using Component to 6090 then HDMI to Sony TV.

Has anyone seen this or is it the "hand-shake" issue? Comcast says their DVR is HDCP compliant. Can't imagine it's the Sony as it is not that old.

Otherwise, I'm happy with the output but wish voice (dialog) on TV programming was more directed from the center channel in may programs. Probably more needed in tweaking the setup as I only did the automatic setup with the supplied microphone.

Cheers!

Can someone please confirm whether the 6090 will convert all component input to 480p?

I am deciding between the 2700 and the 6090.

I expect I will have to connect my SD8300 STB to the 6090 using component (for known handshake reasons), so I want the 6090 to at least pass through the HD signals from my STB - anything less is a deal breaker for me.

I think this is the handshake issue. You probably need to connect your STB via component. But if the 6090 converts all component input to 480p (as was stated above), then this is a serious weakness. The Yamaha specs show deinterlacing from 480i to 480p and never mention 720p or 1080i, which is disturbing.

I think I have the same question, except... I want to pass 1080p component signals (from Xbox 360 fall update) through the HDMI output to my TV, which doesn't accept 1080p through component, but will through HDMI. Is this possible?
The way I read the manual suggests that I can turn off upconversion, but still output a component signal through the HDMI. Am I way off here?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't think the 6090 will pass through 1080p, because not even the 2600 does that. It is, however, a feature of the new 2700, but that receiver is a lot more money than both the 2600 and the 6090.

From what i read, the 6090 will pass through a HDMI 1080p signal. If upconverting from an analog singnal, however, it will come out 480p from the HDMI output

I am a newby here, but what I can tell, the 6090 compares most closely with the 1700. The differences seem to be around the 3rd zone output and some higher level programing (RS232, 12v outputs)

I have a 6090 on order. Should be here on in a couple days.

My question for this group is whether or not this is a good match to my sytem

TV - New Sharp Aquos LC52D62U This set can take in full 1080p over HDMI.
Speakers - Definitive BP706 front, CLR2002 center, BP2X surround, and a 100TL sub.
DVD - Sony DVPNS75H Single Disc DVD Player

Is this system all compatible? I know the DVD upconverts to 720p or 1080i, will this reciever pass this through the HDMI ports? I also plan to add HD digital cable using there HDMI port. Not sure what the resolution is, but will this pass through the 6090? Just want to make sure all ths stuff will work together.

Last I checked, all HTR models have plastic front pannel constuction. The 58XX line from last year had all metal front.

BTW, has anyone seen these in Canada yet? Does BB in Canada plans to carry them? I know some of you here are BB employees, who can maybe shed some light.

Futureshop is carrying them now. There are some in the Calgary Shannessy (sp) store, in Alberta. :)

Well I went and did it. I picked up the HTR-6090 at Futureshop today. I get tired just looking at the thing...so many plug-ins & it weighs a ton...what can I say, I'm a smoker. I will post my experience on hooking it up and playing with it after a week or two. If you don't hear from me that means my significant other is still chasing me around town with a shovel as a result of me once again purchasing new A/V equipment....j/k :D

Well, I went ahead and purchased the HTR-6090. I agree with the last post, weighs a ton. I have it hooked up to a complete Definitive Technology surround sound system (BP7006-Front, CLR2002-Center, BP2X-Rear, PS100T-Sub). Got this all connected in a couple of hours. The sound was just OK when I got this connected, but then I ran the Auto setup routine using the supplied microphone. This system came alive once I did this. I have now connected a upconverting DVD from Sony, an older RCA 5 disk CD changer, and a Belkin PF30 Power Console. Now I am just waiting (impatiently) for my Sharp 52" LCD TV (on order). In the meantime, I am using a 20" LCD so I can see the OSD information.

So far, I am happy with my purchase.

Just for recall, I returned the RX-V1600 in exchange for this one. Although very similar, the HDMI on the 1600 was V1.1 compared to this one at V1.2, I also wanted the IPOD connection capability as well as the HDXM. These features are more similar to the V1700, but cost a few hundred more and I really did not have any use for the 3rd zone audio or the 12 volt switches.

In any case, the 9060 seemed like a better value then the 1700, and had the features I wanted for my home theater.

If I really wanted to spend more, I would have jumped to the 2700 to get the better upconverting capability.

I was wondering about two things regarding the 6090...

1. I realize there is a XM radio input for the 6090, but I have sirius radio and I was wondering if it is possible to some how plug-in a Sirius radio using their home kit. I presently don't have a home kit nor have I seen one. Has anyone here hooked up a Sirius radio to the 6090?

2. The second thing I was wondering about is; My daughter has a Cowon X5L 20 gig Mp3 player. Is there anyway to hook this up instead of a i-pod? Has anyone here hooked up a MP3 player other than a i-pod?

Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and my wife didn't even blink an eye when I came home with the new 6090...though I did bring it home in a new Jeep Grande Cherokee for her, so that might have had something to do with me not being chased around town with a shovel. :D ...a fellow has got to plan these things out. ;)

Would have, but the rest of the moola went to fixing the dodge deisel :) ergo the 6090 had to surffice. I'm glad I got it though, it sounds fantastic and after I figured out what cable went where and fired up the auto programming, it has treated me well so far. I have no complaints regarding it, though it would have been nice to have a usb port for my daughters mp3 player. I wish I could say the same regarding my recent purchase of the Samsung HD-960. It's a great little up-conversion DVD player, but I have been getting these little micro-second blips where the player jumps a few seconds forward with some, not all, of the movies I have been watching. I'm not sure if it's the DVD, DVD player, HDMI cable going into the 6090 or the HDMI cable going out of the receiver into the Sony LCD that is causing it. I think it's switching problem, but not 100% sure.

Have you had any issues similar to this DrPainMD?

I just got off the phone with Samsung Canada and there is an issue with Samsung's HD-960 DVD player.

First off I would like to say this is an absolutely wonderful player and does what is meant to do very, very well. Having said that there is an issue out there regarding this player being used in-conjunction with a 1080p up-conversion receiver, like my Yamaha HTR 6090.

The signals from each perspective unit have a hard time talking to each other and as a result your movie will skip for approximately 1 second. It doesn't happen alot during a movie, but last night when I was watching the new Cars movie from Pixar it did it 5 times. After a while it becomes annoying.

Samsung is aware of the problem with this player and 1080p up-converison receivers. They stated that it is not the Yamaha receiver persay that is causing the problems. It's more to do with two 1080p upconversion units having issues communicating with each other via HDMI. There is no solution as of yet except maybe I'll have to use component cables wired directly from the Samsung into my TV.

I find both units perform well for what they are meant to do, it's just this issue that is irrating me. Anyway thought I would post to point this out if anyone here is thinking of going the same route I did.

Is it possible to disable the upconversion, my TV (Sharp 46" LCD) and HD DVD player do an awesome job with upconversion? Most of the issues with receivers in this price range appear to be with the upconversion. I would prefer to just disable that on the receiver and let the other devices handle it. I know most receivers have a mode that turns off the upconversion.

Thats one huge sub-woofer :) I like the look of it. Also I forgot about Paradigm. I used to have some and really liked them. The choices we have today to go with our systems sometimes can make things confusing and very difficult to make a choice. I'm going to snoop around and see if I can find any of the Series 5 here in Calgary and have a listen to them. Thx DrPain. PS How has the projector treated u thus far? wirechild,

I'm not sure, but I'm going to fiddle around with my receiver today and see what I can find out. Also I was conversing with 57 over in Digital Home Canada and he gave me a link to monoPrice.com that has HDMI switchers for sale at a great price that would help in providing me with more HDMI hook-ups for my TV, which only has one HDMI hook up. Hopefully the switcher will help me nullify the issues that I have been having with my up-conversion receiver & DVD player. The link is below.

I am running HDMI from the HD-DVD player (HD-A1) Into the reciever then the reciever to the tv (Mitsubishi 65731) with another HDMI cable , and the picture will turn off, but I can hear the sound for a bit then the player stops and will tell me "No HDMI link" . Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

to buy the 6090 but...

I happen to come across the Pioneer Elite VSX-81/82TSX and there are some who believe the sound is much better than Yamaha.

Anyone here with first hand experience watching movies thru the Yamaha and Pioneer Elite? I'm starting my Media room with the receiver and I'm already $150 over budjet for the receiver!

The 81TSX is on par feature-wise with the 6090 except that it has THX. This makes the Pioneer more attractive but even more expensive!

Thanks for any advice.

Yea...

I've listened to the 6090 and it's amazing compared to what i have so I'll definately listen to the 81txv before I buy...in the end It's up to MY ears.

If the sound quality is comparable (it is a receiver after all) and the price point the same, the Pioneer adds THX but I lose the TBC and lipSync of the Yamaha...I can live with that.

The tough part is giving up on a brand that I have soft spot for.

HDMI 1.2a for All-Digital Audio
HDMI This receiver incorporates the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.2a specification. Listeners can enjoy crystal-clear, all-digital audio quality via a single HDMI cable.
1080p Compatible HDMI (2 In/1 Out)
This receiver has the capability of repeating 1080p video signals from HDMI input to HDMI output. Two inputs are provided, so the user can switch among them.

.

This receiver has caught my eye as a potential replacement to my Yamaha DSP-A1 but I am worried about the HDMI spec.

Currently I use an external HDMI switch to handle the Video from my HDDVD player and my Directv HDTIVO to the TV.

I read that you needed HDMI version 1.3 to get 1080P as it required a higher bandwidth and I see that this receiver is version 1.2.

Am I incorrect?
Are there any version 1.3 receivers available?

The 1080P is important to me since I will be replacing my 720P Plasma with a 1080P Plasma next year some time when they become affordable.
My understandning is that you can get 1080P out of an HDDVD player.

Thanks for any inputs folks may have on this HDMI 1.3 issue.

From the Yamaha website: http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Receivers/HTR6090B.jsp

One cable does it all! HDMI offers the simplest and most reliable audio and video data handling. The HTR6090 incorporates the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.2a specification. With HDMI listeners can enjoy crystal-clear, all-digital audio quality and if that's not enough the HTR6090 also has the capability of repeating 1080p video signals from HDMI input to HDMI output. Three inputs are provided.

All digital provides the highest quality available—HDMI is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats, including 720p, 1080i and even upcoming 1080p.

http://www.yamaha.ca/av/technology/HDMI.jsp

A single cable connection means no more cable mess—Since HDMI carries all digital video and audio channels, there is only one cable to connect any HDMI-enabled source device to a display.

Automatic format adjustment matches content to preferred viewing format—HDMI systems can automatically configure to display content in its most effective format. If cable TV content jumps from 16:9 format to standard 4:3, an HDMI-enabled TV will automatically adjust to match the ideal format.

PC Compatibility enables viewing of your PC data on your HDTV— HDMI enabled devices are backwards compatible with the broad array of DVI-based PCs so that you can display gaming or entertainment content on your HDTV.

The system freezes every time it is put in sleep mode and none of the remote or the unit panel buttons activate the system after going into Sleep mode. I picked up my HTR-6090 a couple of months ago and I'm really enjoying the upgrade from my last receiver.

I do have a problem, however, and I was hoping this group could help me out. :)

When watching TV -- I use the Comcast Motorola DTC-3416. And for troubleshooting purposes, I have it connected to the 6090 with both HDMI and Component/SPIDF.

When watching certain channels (Discovery HD, CBS HD, Food Network-SD and HGTV-SD), the audio intermittently cuts out.

Details:
Discovery HD - most persistent, every 10-30 seconds or so.
CBS-HD - when watching HD content, the sound cuts out when going to SD commercials, but the sound comes back when the program is back. Most every NFL game.
Food & HGTV - less persistent

I can get sound back by doing either -- change the channel back / forth OR hit "Straight / Effect" button on the Yamaha remote. The problems here are present with audio through HDMI and SPIDF.

Originally, I thought this was a Comcast box problem, but after switching boxes I think there is a problem with my 6090 or I have a setup problem.

Thoughts / suggestions / solutions?

Thanks!

But a local salesperson told me that the only Pioneer that would work with an Ipod dock was the VSX-82TXS - which I doubt is available for the price you mentioned. Was this salesperson wrong?

Thanks for the information.

I find some things - like TVs and speakers - easy to buy. They're basically WYS (or hear) IWYG. Receivers on the other hand drive me nuts. Apart from looking at a million connection holes on the back - I can't figure them out at all.

Right now we have a middle of the road 5-6 year old Sony. Works fine. But it's out of date in terms of connections (only a half million holes on the back ;) ). And we'd like to try using an IPod for our music collection (instead of or in addition to our current 400 CD changer). We also recently bought a new plasma TV (Panasonic) - new speakers (Mythos Def Tech) - and a new DVD changer (Yamaha). So I think it's time to upgrade the receiver. But - since none of the other stuff is really high end - I can't see paying over $1000 for a receiver and IPod dock - and the Yamaha 6090 seems like a good fit (technically I don't need the HDMI connection now - but I might need it when when upgrade our DVD player in the future).

What the heck - I will probably just order the 6090 and take it for a test drive. Robyn

I have the same problem.Only happens if I am watching say a football game. When it goes to a commercial the sounds drops out.If I pressed any of the buttons such as movie modes ect it comes back on.Weird.It seems it only does it on the local commercials not the network ones.I have a motorola dvr box.BUDDA

I'm getting ready to call Yamaha -- have you? I don't mind so much for the audio drop outs on commercials :D , but it effectively makes Discovery HD unwatchable.

Thanks!

I got pretty confused reading the part of this thread which dealt with HDMI pass-throughs - conversions - etc. So I called Yamaha technical support (I've found they'll answer questions for you when you're thinking about buying a Yamaha product).

Here's the deal. If you have a high-def input into the receiver - but are using something other than an HDMI cable for the input (e.g., component cables) - and you use the HDMI out to the TV - this receiver will turn your hi-def input into low-def (480). To maintain the hi-def - if you are going "component in" - you have to go "component out". If you are "HDMI-in" for the hi-def - then you are fine with "HDMI-out".

Now there aren't many circumstances where this would apply - but one would be a hi-def cable box which doesn't have HDMI. This doesn't apply to me (so I ordered the receiver). But I thought this information might help anyone out there who got confused by this discussion (like I did). Robyn

I'm sorry, but I don't believe this to be true. I had a HD Cable box outputting Component into the 6090 and HDMI then into my HDTV. It was displaying HD -- not 480i/p.

The whole up-convert thing is confusing to me as well. The manual isn’t all that clear about what gets passed thru to HDMI. You gotta read between the lines

Yamaha manual page 97
Here the feature is set to ON

“…HDMI interlace/up-conversion

NOTE

When analog video signals with 1080i or 720p resolution are up-converted to HDMI the picture quality may worsen”

I think what they mean is that ONLY when you have the de-interlace feature set to ON the picture gets worse because…

On page 96 there is a note about video conversion and is basically sez

“Select ON to convert Composite, S-video, and component video signal interchangeably and up-convert Composite, S-video, and Component video signal to HDMI”

I read this as the receiver is in “switch” mode and what goes in is what goes out thru any of the analog out OR HDMI oOUTs. The exception being when the de-interlace feature is in use it will screw with the signal if it is above 480i.

I couldn’t find anything in the docs that say 1080p from component IN won’t go OUT thru HDMI but I thinking that 1080P won’t go from component to HDMI because of the note on page 97 of the manual…it never mentions 1080p

Whew!

I looked at the ONKYO 674 and the Denon 887. The 887 does NOT de-interlace. The 674 does and I’m still confused as wheather 1080p from a Component IN can be converted to HDMI 1080p OUT!

Their all about the same price so I gotta get back in the stores to listen AGAIN.

I’m still likin’ the Yamaha!

I bailed on the Pioneer 82txv—or anything that’s has THX because it costs too much for me. I just could find one with a warranty for about $800 total

Bailed on the Sony STR-DG1000—no ipod doc

With all the HDMI voodoo going on the Pioneer 1016 is looking attractive all over again…especially considering the price! They use a simple solution Analog in is analog out. HDMI in is HDMI out. No audio on HDMI…who cares about 7.1 audio going to a couple of tiny TV speakers…just bite the bullet and use an audio cable.

It seems to me that companies a charging a WHOLE LOT just for the promise of “one simple cable”

That 1016 is lookin’ good after I’ve been thru this HDMI whirlwind…Nahhhh…I think I’ll still get the Yamaha!

Do not know if this applys to anyone. But I have found that not using the yamaha conversion I get the best pic.I used the Tosh HD-A1 hdmi to the 6090 then hdmi to my ax100 FP/Motorola dvr component out to 6090.I set the option in the 6090 menu to pass all signals though untouch. And my pic is killer on sdvd 'hddvd'and hdtv.My only problem is on hdtv CBS the sound on the local commercial go's out;good thing really. But I can not figure what the heck does that. Also I keep my HD-A1 set to 720p resolution since the ax100 is 720p/The pic for me is perfect and sharper than the 1080i setting on the HD-A1.BUDDA

Since authorized dealers either want to gouge me or play games, I'm considering this 6090 vs. either the RXV1700 or 2700. I wonder what I'm really missing out on if I do that.

The 2700 is amazing, but I refuse to pay MSRP for it and I don't want to go gray market.

Is the 6090 essentially the RXV1700?

Yes they are same thing. You can go to BB and get the 6090 for under $1k or go to the back of the store to Magnolia and buy the 1700 for $200 more. They just have a different name and face plate/I got the 6090 and it sounds great.

What is the difference between the RX-V line and the HTR line AV receivers ?

Thanks!

I have the same issue, though not a persistant.

Seems we have the same amp, same cable box. I have this connected to a 52" LCD TV (Sharp). Please keep up this post on what you find out.

What I know.

1. If I pass the audio through the amp to the TV using the manual/sound/HDMI menu, the problem seems to go away. Or at least is much much better. I have not had time to play with this much, but although you still get sound out of your amp, it does seem to take away the DolbyD effect.

2. I have read that this problem can be a problem if your cable signal is too noisy, too weak, or too strong. I have played around with various splitters, cable amps, etc. No noticable affect.

3. The frequency of this issue seems to change throuout the day. Some times much worse then others.

4. I have tried to connect the box to the amp with a optical cable for sound, but the issue seems to stay.

5. If the sound cuts out, I have tried backing up in the DVR buffer and playing again. The sound always cuts out at the same spot. So it seems to be a signal coming from the cable box.

I will try and keep you informed about what else I may find. Please do the same.

One last thing I noticed about this audio cut out issue.

It seems like the problem is dependent on the order I have turned on my equipment. This problem is so intermittent for me I have not been able to prove this, but those of you that have this happening more often, please let me know if you are finding the same to be true

I did some more experimenting. I agree, the order the equipment is turned on does not seem to make a difference. I did find some additional information.

1. The number of cut out per period of time is not constant. I may be able to watch an entire 2 hour show and not cut out at all, then I will get a cut out every 10 min during another show.

2. I have dramatically reduced the number of cut out by passing the HDMI audio signal through the 6090 and on to my TV. You still get sound out of the receiver, but I can not recall getting an audio cut out.

I have sent a note to Yamaha customer service, but I have not received a response yet.

I have also sent a note to Yamaha customer service -- still waiting for a response.

Just FYI -- when I recorded NCIS last week, the playback was unwatchable -- the sound cut out every other second. When switching audio and getting it back -- the drop out would happen in 1-2 seconds. The commercials played just fine

I still have to do the Manual switching that you suggested.

Just to be clear -- I don't get this problem with any other A/V source... DVD's, streaming video, etc.

Stay tuned.

Yes, same with me. only with the 3416 cable box.

It seems like your cut out is much more severe then I have. I got my first definite cut out on a channel other then Discovery HD. But only once in about 3 hours of watching. Discovery HD seems to happen much more often, but very inconsistent.

I still have not gotten a response from Yamaha.

I made sure everything was tightly connected , CRANKED everything on with the sub thumpin some serious Db's , talkin' +5.5. Hit a really deep note/everything cut out. Heard a hum. Cool Link!

I tried this and got the following:

d03 OOB Status
SNR: 20.4dB (Good) <-> 19.8dB (Fair) :: the numbers would bounce around a bit in this range.
AGC: 21% (Good)

d04 Inband Status
Inband Tuner 1: SNR would stay in the "Fair" range for most of the time, but would bump up to "Good"
Inband Tuner 2: Was consistently "Good"

d06 Current Channel Status
Type: "Digital" "ENC"
Status: "Acquired"

So -- I have fairly low signal strength and a signal to noise ratio problem. From the wiki, "If you only have problems with a few channels, it could be interference at a particular frequency leaking into the cable from someplace."

What I want to know is why both of us have the same interference issue?

A Comcast tech indicated that my SNR around 20 was usually fine. :o

As Wayne "WRolls" suggested, I am experimenting with the settings:

Menu \ Manual Setup \ Sound Manu \ HDMI Set = HTR-6090
--> When using this setting, the audio drop out is present and "Straight Audio" indicates "Dolby Digital" when programming indicates DD

Menu \ Manual Setup \ Sound Manu \ HDMI Set = Other
--> When using this setting, the audio drop out is not present and "Straight Audio" indicates "PCM" when programming indicates DD

I will leave the setting on "Other" to see if the audio drop outs cease. I can hear the difference between some of the programming in DD vs PCM. I'm wondering if we can get optimal performance in the PCM mode? Anyone?

I think Yamaha may have come through with a fix. See this web site and download the firmware update.

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=451765&CTID=5000400&RLTID=1505&DETYP=RELATION

There are great directions. I followed them, made the update and have not had a drop our since. The only thing I now get is a very momentary dropout of audio every now and then on the same channel I used to get audio cut outs. Seems like there is still a signal coming through that cuts out the audio, but now it recovers in a few milliseconds. I do not hear any dropout on other channels or audio inputs. I am HAPPY AS HELL.

If you have any questions or difficulties with this firmware update, let me know.

I originally posted here looking for advice about whether Orb speakers were a good choice for my 16x16 sunroom with tile floor. Had a great chat with one of Orb's people, and kept reading here and elsewhere. Confirmed as best I could that Orb's People's 5.1 Choice Mod2s across the front with two Mod1s in rear seem to be my best bet to provide the best sound (within my budget) for that unusual room. Meanwhile, a member here PM'ed me with a deal on six of the Mod1s that I would need, with a great price. I then bought the rest of the system through Orb's web site.

I also noted in the original post that I had determined to get an Onkyo 604 or 674 as an interim solution given all the problems in receivers these days. After reading a LOT of receiver forum threads, especially the "future proof" "sticky post," I realized that the forward-looking Yamaha technology I most wanted in an RX-V1700 or 2700 is available in the Yamaha HTR-6090, for MUCH less (especially today through J&R's web site deal). That "future proof" thread is long, but VERY good reading. From it I gleaned that the 6090 appears to be one of the few receivers in the highest of its six classes, and certainly, at J&R's current pricing, for me the no-brainer way to go. Before ordering it, I registered on Yamaha's site to view the owner's manual and saw there the fix y'all have noted that appeared there today in response to complaints like yours. So ... I ordered one of those. I'll just use it in 5.1 to start, but could go to 7.1 or another zone without much sweat. I don't live far from a service center so if I have any problem doing the fix myself I'll let Yamaha do it.

I'll try to remember to post here about how things go. After ordering all this stuff, I called Comcast to upgrade to an HD DVR rather than the HD non-DVR I've been using. Believe it or not, I am supposedly going to get one with HDMI, so it seems that Comcast is finally getting a clue about what the market wants. Now I'm hoping that "the handshakes" between it and the other components are good ones.

Many thanks to all who post here, in the speakers and receivers threads. I have learned SO much in a short time that could not have been learned any other way. You've steered me away from what would have been bad or just okay choices, and to what appear to be great choices for my budget and circumstances. Y'all are wonderful!

So what comcast box did you get? From what I know, 2 DVR versions have HDMI outputs and one standard HD box has HDMI. In the twin cities are of MN, comcast does not "support HDMI", but that and a couple of bucks will get you a small coffee.

In any case, I have the 3416 DVR and now that I updated the firmware, works fine along with the HDMI connection to my LCD TV.

Pay attention to what order you turn on devices. I always leave my cable box on, then I turn on the receiver, then the TV. I did get a handshake error once when I turned on the TV first, but I have not been able to repeat it.

Good luck

I've been following this thread closely as I am considering the 5090/6090, HK 645, or comparable Denon. The 5090 seems the best bang for the buck for me as I do not have a 1080P capable TV.

My current set up is Samsung Rear Projection DLP and SA 8300HD cable box. I plan on upgrading my DVD player to an HDMI capable unit in the future but right now I'm using my PS2 via component.

This whole HDMI de-interlace/up-convert discussion has me a bit confused. So, my question is this: To get the best quality SD/HD picture how should I connect the STB to the receiver? Should the STB be set to output only 720P/1080i via HDMI and have the 5090 pass the signal via HDMI to the TV. Or, should the STB output 480i/720P/1080i via HDMI (or component?) to the receiver and have the receiver deinterlace the 480i to 480P? Also, if the second option is the best for the SD signal what happens to the HD signal? From the above discussion it sounds like the 5090 will scale the HD signal back to 480P, no?

I apologize if this has already been answered but I'm just not getting it.

On a side note, has anyone compared the 5090/6090 to the HK 645?

Thanks!

My opinion - no mater what AV receiver you have - is to only pass signals through your receiver and disable all of the up converting. This means having multiple connections from your receiver to your TV and selecting the correct TV input depending on what your are watching.

I say this because in my opinion, most receivers do not have the best up converting algorithms and your TV will likely do a better job.

So if you have an HDMI output on your 8300, use it and connect your TV to your amp via a HDMI cable as well. If you get an HDMI DVD - your set. If you still use your PS2, connect using component or composite (component is better) and use the same connection to your TV (component of composite).

Others may have a different opinion.

Some of the earlier DCT6412 models actually have a non-HDCP compliant DVI output. This model is identical to the 6412-III model. The front of this early version 6412 doesn't even have a permanent model number printed on it anywhere, either. There was a sticker with the model number that you could peel off. My guess is that Motorola supplied Comcast with some "test" versions of the 2 tuner HD/DVR, which I have one of, then finalized an HDMI version, which I also have one of.

Just wanted to post a first partial day of listening report:

My Orb 5.1 Peoples Choice (3 Mod2s up front with 2 Mod1s in the rear plus the Super8 subwoofer) is now fully hooked up in my difficult 16x16 sunroom with lots of windows and tile floor acoustics, run by a new Yamaha HTR6090 receiver....

I don't know how traditional speakers would do in that room (but from lots of reading here and elsewhere confirmed to my satisfaction that not only would they be too large, but probably not do well at all), but the Orbs are delivering beautiful sound even on temporary stands (don't want to mount them until I'm sure about placement positions).

The people at Orb were great with fast shipments, and a member here with six mint-condition used Orbs saved me a few bucks, too.

The Yamaha HTR6090 arrived quickly from J&R and has been relatively easy to get to understand. I got the Comcast Motorola DCT3416 hdmi dvr box this morning, and have all of my stuff (including the cheap but good with a simple fix for region free + upconverting Philips DVP5960 dvd player and Vizio L32 32" lcd) hooked with hdmi cables.

Having never equipped my HDTVs with external speakers or receiver, I am in every way a Noob, so don't judge what to do for you based on my novice ears. However, given Orb's 30 day return policy and the special pricing for the feature-packed 6090 I got at J&R that you might be able to get, what do you have to lose? ;) :D

I should add that the sound that flows through the sliding glass door from the "back" of the sunroom to my large living room is wonderful! I have a large pool table in that room, and will likely add surround or zone 2 speakers in it to make the listening experience even better (whether with the sunroom speakers or separately) ... and yes, Orbs will be atop my shopping list.

I'm getting ready to call Yamaha -- have you? I don't mind so much for the audio drop outs on commercials :D , but it effectively makes Discovery HD unwatchable.

Thanks!
There is a firmware update that seems to solve the audio dropout problem on the Yamaha 6090. It can be found on the "Downloads" tab of the 6090 page of the Yamaha website. In order to access it I had to become a "Yamaha Electronics Member", but all that entailed was giving them the information you would normally give when you register the product. Prior to the update I would lose audio during both live and recorded broadcasts. In the two hours since applying the update I have not experienced any dropouts. I'll let everyone know if that changes.

Reading the threads on the subject helped me decide to buy the 6090. Thanks to all of you. :)

PS: The information I posted is about the US site.

This is a very capable receiver - I am replacing my NAD T770, and am so far extremely happy. I have it connected to Toshiba A2 HD player (HDMI), Squeezebox (Optical), Oppo 971 (Optical) and Direct HD Tivo (HDMI) and they all sound grand - the A2 outputs a little low levels via HDMI, but I think that's a problem on the Toshiba end for me to tinker with....

Two issues :
1) The manual seems wrong on Pure Direct mode. It doesn't seem to pass through video, period.
2) LFE - does the Yamaha suffer from the 10db via PCM/HDMI issues other receivers have? I have yet to find this out, and it is stopping me investing in a sub right now.

Hi, I just got the HTR6090 today and have it all setup. I seem to have run into a problem that I can't seem to find the solution to anywhere, instead of audio dropouts, I am getting video dropouts, mainly on HD channels from my motorola set top box, the sd channels seem to work fine. Also my Toshiba upscaling dvd player gets an absolutely horrible picture, and my xbox 360 picture doesnt come in at all. The dvd and stb are connected to the yamaha with hdmi, and the xbox through component video, all feeding into my 50 inch toshiba dlp 720p tv through an hdmi. I've tried all the options for video upscaling in the menu, doesnt matter, i get a crappy picture. Does anyone have any advice?
thanks in advance

Hi all, I'm somewhat a noob to the HT world. I've been hanging out at this forum for a few months, originally to research hd tv's which helped me in buying a Sony KDS-R60XBR2. A great hd tv.
But I would like to share my noob experiences with the 6090 that I just hooked up today.

I have 3 components running audio and video through it.
PS3 HDMI in. XBox360 component video in/optical in for audio.
Motorola HD cable box component video in/digital coax in for audio. Everything being switched by the 6090 and sent out one HDMI cable to the XBR2.

Minus a small setting I overlooked for audio out in the PS3 everything went well.
PS3 plays blueray through the receiver well with no loss in video quality that I could tell. Standard DVD picture from the PS3 was to my eyes the best DVD picture I have see. I had no upconverting going on, my tv display showed 480p resolution. The movie was Pirates...Return of Jack Sparrow. It actually looked better than the XBox360, I assumed it was because of the HDMI connection.

As far as downscaling the resolution when going from component to HDMI. I am not experiencing that. My tv display resolution shows 1080i or 720p when using the cable box. And all my 360 games stay in 720p or 1080i according to my tv display.

As far as sound quality, I don't have a trained ear but it sounds awsome to me. I'm using the Klipsch F-3 5.1 speaker system with the 10" sub. I returned the Bose Lifestyle 28 my wife got me for Christmas (with her permission) to get this set up. Before this I had no HT setup, just an old Samsung 42" crt 1080i tv.

Well that's my experience. Sorry for the long post. And ohya, I do need to do that firmware update also. I did experience a couple of audio drop outs when switching to the cable box from the PS3.

I have read every post on this thread, but I haven't seen anyone with my problem.

I have the video cut-out on my reciever and the audio at the same time, it will do it during a TV program on any channel at anytime, sometimes going out as many as 30 times in 30 mins, each minature "blackout" lasts as long as 10 secs.

I have tried to do the CDDA Upgrader firmware upload, but for what ever reason it won't take. I have tried it with a DVD and a CD both with digital out(co-axial), I can't try it optically because I don't have the equipment for that. Is there a trick to this update? I have tried to burn a second disk, I have downloaded the wav file twice converted it to audio, played it in stream and PCM, tried digital CD feed from a friends DJ CD player, I am baffled to say the least.

So the signal drops out on my video, I can't do the firmware and my wife is ready to hang me because the TV keeps cutting out. Customer service is closed and I am about at wits end.

Motorola DCT 2224 cable box & Panasonic 53x54 HD TV if that info helps.

I swear it is like the cable box signal drops out to the reciever, because it NEVER happens when I am in the cable box menu display, only during programs.

I run my cable box input with S-Video and RCA audio because that is the technology they had at the time.

Looking forward to hearing some feedback guys, thanks!

Interesting thing today:

I noticed this receiver runs alot warmer than my old Yamaha, so I went and bought a computer power source cooling fan (12v) and a 9v adapter. I merged the two together and I layed it on the receiver blowing down on the heatsink in the front right corner.

Since I have done this the video and audio haven't cut out once.

I am not sure if the heat had anything to do with it, but I am at a loss to explain it any other way. I have the receiver sitting on top of my TV and there is nothing within 6 inches of it in any direction, so I never thought it would get as hot as it was. Now it is cool as ever and I am thinking it was getting too hot.

Guess the next question is if I have something in there that is loose and only apparent when the receiver was heating up?

Anyways, I look forward to any responses and I will keep you all informed if this keeps running smoothly.

Just in case you were unaware...you can press MENU on your 6090 remote while watching a video source. This will bring up the setup menus, and then you can sroll down to the SIGNAL INFO tab, click it, and view your video and audio source parameters. Just push <- or -> to switch between the two. A little more detailed than your TV's info.

Just an update to those trying to do the firmware update.

I was successful in using a PS3 for the update. Optical out of the PS3 to the front optical on the 6090. Be sure to set the PS3 to 44khz and bitstreams in the sound and BD menus.
Also, direct hook video to the TV, not through the 6090.

I just got the HTR-6090 on Friday and was having trouble with my Motorola cable box audio dropout on channel changing. I updated the firmware using my Denon DVD player (coax hookup) and it seems to be fine now. Wonderful!

My only hitch in the system right now is I have a Definitive ProSub 80 and it turns off by itself if it doesn't get enough sound or something (I can't figure it out) and I have to crank the system to get it back on then back off of the volume. I'm thinking about hooking it up via the FL/FR speaker wires instead of the subwoofer cable that is on there right now. Anyone have an idea? Thanks!

This is whacked.

I am trying my best to get to the bottom of this, but I am more confused as time progresses.

I wonder if the receiver I own already has the firmware upgrade because I noticed that the audio does not cut out, it is the video that is cutting out. When the cutout happens my TV flashes that the HDMI signal is lost, but the audio is still playing through the receiver.

I swapped out the S-viseo cable with another that I had and the video still cutout, I then swapped off the S-video and ran a RCA video inout. When I completed that swap the video has not cut out once in the last hour.

I can only assume at this point that the cable box signal fades through the S-video output causing the receiver to loose the signal and stop the up-conversion process.

Guess maybe the cable company is the issue and not my receiver.

Is it possible that the receiver already had the upgrade and that is why my update wouldn't take?

Jeff

Just received my new 6090 the other day and finally got around to trying the automatic speaker setup. I have 2 main front speakers, a center speaker and 2 rear surround speakers.
The auto setup did not work apparently because I don't have a subwoofer. It kept stopping the process with the No Subwoofer error.
Does anyone have a workaround for this or do I just need to do the manual configuration for my speaker configuration.

Thanks.

Had my 6090 for a month now, but my remote control has been acting up. The button to enter the SETUP MENU to access the manual/auto configurations doesn't work. However, all the other functions on the remote work fine, just not the setup. I also made sure that the dial is set on AMP. I reseted the remote to factory settings. It didn't work and just gave me an error. I also reseted the AV receiver to see if that was the culprit. Still, nothing works. Has anyone else experienced this or have a solution for me? Any help or advice would be great. Thanks!

Has any one had any success updating the firmware. I went throught the procress as described in the instructions pdf. If you haven't found found a workaround yet, try this.
With you remote set to amp press the menu button.
Then press enter on manual set up
Press enter on basic menu
Enter speaker set
Set LFE/Bass out to front only

Now try to rerun the auto setup and see if this works. I have a sub in my setup but I think this should work.

I had the same issue with my prosub100. I fixed it by simply turning up the LFE output from the 6090 to the max (adjusted the volume on the prosub down to compensate). I also used a splitter on the LFE signal and sent it to both the left and right inputs on the back of the sub.

These two changes have fixed this problem on my system. If you still have trouble, you can send your run a set of speaker wires from your front left and right speakers to your sub. This will give the internal amp plenty of signal to turn the amp on.

I had similar results. I first tried update with A2 Toshiba DVD player, then I tried with a Sony CD player, both with optical out. When you start the update disc in your DVD/CD player, the front display of the 6090 should almost immediately change from the "CDDA Upgrader 6090" text, to kinda like a code string that scrolls through numbers and letters pretty quickly. This is how you will know if the CD/DVD player is actually outputting the right way into the 6090.

If this doesn't happen almost immediately when you push play, recheck all of your CD/DVD settings. The first time around with my PS3, I had set the sound output at 48khz, and the update didn't start. I realized what the problem could be, so I reset the outpust to 44khz, and it worked fine. All bitstreams set where appropriate.

Good luck.

Good luck.
Thanks for your help. I finally was able to update firmware. I used an audio CD via Ahead Nero software before and it did not work. I burned an audio cd with Roxio and it worked. I used the Toshiba A2 with audio out (bitstream, not PCM). I turned on the DVD player and inserted the disc while the 6090 receiver was on. Then I turned off the receiver, unpluged it and pluged it back in holding the main on/off button as instructed. I was using optical out to receiver. This time, when I pushed play on the DVD player, just like you said, a string of numbers immediately started across the receiver OSD. When the disc was done (4 minutes), it did say: "Update Sucess Please push Master on/off". So I guess the Tech person from Yamaha lied! I am just happy it updated firmware this time!

I have another question about set up. I was wondering what others have for settings when auto set up and tone controls. Did you run auto mic set up with tone controls (treble and bass) on by-pass? Also, what do you have treble and bass set at? I was thinking +2.0 for bass and +1.5 for treble. I have Ascend acoustic speakers that run "forward" (a little bright) so I kept the "natural" settings for speakers that flatten out the highs a bit. What are your settings?

Can someone tell me if it is possible to run component in at 720p and get it sent to my TV over HDMI at 720P? Reading the thread there appears a disagreement regarding if this is possible. Also I would like to know if 480i/p, 1080i/P can come in over component and out on HDMI. Not really concerned about audio this will be coming in thru the optical...

thanks

I have verified when playing my XBox360 and watching SD and HD cable that the resolution going to the TV through HDMI from the receiver is the same as what it coming into the receiver through component...480I/P, 720P, 1080I
I cannot verify this with 1080P because I have nothing that runs 1080P through component. My XBox360 and cable box are connected by component to the receiver.

I just got this receiver yesterday.

Before doing any hookups, I flashed the firmware.

It took about 4 minutes, erasing and flashing memory locations (as shown in the display). Then it said UPDATE COMPLETE, then told me to turn it off.

No problems whatsoever.

I am not 100% certain, but it took me 4-5 times before the firmware worked. But I thought my DVD player read 4:08 minutes. I know the file in WMP says 3:32 however, but I am not certain. make sure you burn the wave file and not the compressed zip file. and try different buring software. Nero did not work but Roxio software burned CD worked.

Jeff

p/s sorry about my mega posts, just trying to sort this out.
Jeff;
I saw in audoaholics or somewhere else that there are issues with cut outs and cable boxes. It is the cable company issue and they are aware of it. The 6090 does not come with update software and the audio cutout seems related to HDMI. I would recommend that you update the firmware. Go to yamaha site and click on dealer near you or authorized service dealer. Mine is 60 miles away. But you can have them update firmware.

I am corresponding with Yamaha Canada and trying to set up a update time to be done, only problem is the 120 mile drive to a service center and the 2 day wait for them to do it.....gotta love Canada Customer Service..........

BTW I burned my disc through windows media player and I am thinking that might be an issue too.

Thanks again

I do not understand why some are having so much trouble with this firmware update. One thing that tricked me up was that the CD needed to be recorded as an Audio CD, not a data CD. You also need to close the CD so that it can be played by most CD players. You can check to see if the CD plays in any CD player. You should hear some blips and noise.

I have the CD burnt as audio, I even checked it in my car.

The CD being burnt has a track 3:32 long and I have played it on a co-axial cable feed both from my DVD and from a friends CD player.

I have read the instructions and followed every step to the letter, I even asked my wife to give it a go (be very afraid).

I have a PS3 set off to the side for me until payday at which point I am going to try buring the CD with another program other than windows media player and if the optical feed and new CD doesn't work I will admit defeat.

A couple of questions:
1. Are you getting the initial screen on the receiver (CDDA Upgrader)?
2. If yes, do you see the screen change when you hit play on your CD player?
- I got a number of screens showing deleting memory segments followed by a bunch of data writes.

At the end of this process, I got the "Update Success" screen, but actually needed to turn off the power with the master power switch.

Other then that minor issue, I did not have any trouble.

BTW - your a brave man admiting the whole wife thing.....

1) Yes I get the CDDA upgrader text popup
2) nothing happens after I push play

I sent an E-mail to Yamaha Canada and they told me that I have to mail the 6090 to Toronto and they will do the upgrade. They said that Yamaha Canada does not support customers doing their own firmware updates. I sent an e-mail telling them I wasn't about to send my receiver 2000 kilometers to fix a problem they shouldn't have sold me in the first place and that I can do it myself if they could send me a disk that they use. I am waiting for a reply.

All in all it is pretty frustrating for me to put up with the flaw when they released the receiver knowing it was there from day 1.

sigh

Hi Guys Thanks to psychdoctor, I was able to finally upgrade the firmware. Burning the CD with Roxio CD Creator helped. I don't know what the difference is in the burning formats but that all I did and it finally started filiping numbers on the screen and in 3 minutes it said "Upgrade Successfull". I already have cd burning software on my laptop (Which didn't burn it right!!1)and didn't want to buy another so I downloaded the 15 day trial version of Roxio. Hope this helps others who are having similar issues.

I did but my understanding is the Pioneer only has HDMI "passthrough", so if you want audio, you need to go external or use the optical/coaxial.

No HDMI audio.

I needed HDMI audio/PCM for my PS3.

I spoke with a Yamaha Canada rep yesterday on the telephone and he told me two interesting things:

1) The firmware upgrade only works for correcting audio drop out on Dolby audio feeds from Cable/Sat boxes. This is described earlier in this thread. So when watching TV and a commercial comes on (during a program that has dolby sound) the unit will cut out audio when the commercials end. This is the only fix the firmware upgrade does.

2) In Canada if you try to do the upgrade and it does not work resulting in any damage to the programming of the 6090, your warranty is void. The only warrantable option you have in Canada is to ship the unit to them in Toronto (collect) and to give them your tracking number for shipping, they will do the upgrade and call you when it is done. They will then ship it back to you pre-paid.

The person I spoke with was pretty nice and was very understanding of my dilemma. He told me that Yamaha Canada may do a recall to get this fixed, but because this is in the earliest stages they are doing the shipping to fix this problem with the least amount of cost to customers......just wish it wasn't so inconvienient.

He did tell me though that the problem I am having is not related to the 6090 at all and that my suspicions of cable company errors are correct.

My unit will drop the video signal resulting in my Panny 53x54 projection TV flashing the HDMI signal loss warning, on some channels I will get signal loss up to 15 times a minute making TV watching impossible.

Obviously my problem is not related to the firmware upgrade , so I might hold off on doing it until I can be without it for a week.

I'm trying my best to keep my cool, but I just purchased the Yamaha -6090 and for the most part I love the sound quality, however I have one huge problem.

My true HDMI sources a PS3 and my Direct TV HD Tivo Box will not keep sending the signal. . Sometimes I keep a signal for 30 minutes sometimes 30 seconds and sometimes less than 3 seconds and than the screen goes snowy or turns purple or both and comes back in usually only briefly for a short period of time. Once the process starts it becomes impossible to watch TIVO or play PS3.

When I play any of my other sources through the upconversion I have no issues. For example I'm watching a movie through my 360 on HD-DVD which is currently broadcasting though HDMI, and I have absolutley no problem with it (sounds great, pictures great...i'm very happy). I saw that there is a firmware update , but it leads me to believe these are for audio issues only. Considering that burning a CD is a little difficult for me right now...if its not going to fix the problem I don't want to bother with more frustration.

I have a Monoprice switch that I have now installed into the first HDMI input in hopes that this might help with the signal, but so far no dice. I'm ready to go through the tedius process of unhooking this bad boy and returning it while the gettings good.

Hopefully the screw up is on my part and someone has a suggestion for why I keep keep a constant signal. I could really use some help...Big thanks to anyone who has read this far....and especially big thanks to anyone who has a suggestion!

First of all, the 360 doesn't output via HDMI, so I am assuming your are using component out from the 360 and having the receiver transcode to output via HDMI? If there are no problems there, than that says to me that there may be something awry from the components going into the receiver. My guess, it that you either have bad cables or defective HDMI inputs on the receiver. I know that I had some issues due to having to bend the HDMI cables to fit into my A/V stand. Sounds to me like cables are the most likely culprit.

If it's the receiver, hopefully you bought it from a place where an exchange would be relatively painless.

Sorry...your right I have the 360 input to the Reciever with componet cables. I set the projector to HDMI output and through the magic of the reciever it is broadcasting my 360 (sorry...can you tell I'm still learning). The point is it works great! The PS3 and my HD Direct TV reciever which actually output HDMI are the only sources that are losing the signal and causing me the headaches. I've rewired it...disconnected it....reconnected...tried differant configurations.

What TV are you using on the end of the HDMI chain?

I am not sure, but I think the TV may also be a weak link in your HDCP/HDMI handshake issue. Have you noticed that if you turn off the TV before your receiver while the Tivo is still outputting, you will lose picture and sound? I think this has to do with everything syncing for HDCP, and once the TV goes, the 6090 and the Tivo reset with each other because you will still hear the TV signal.

As an experiment, try recording an hour or so of Tivo without your TV on, watch the recording, and see if there are still dropouts. This will verify if there truly is a hardware problem with your 6090 or just a compatibility issue.

Hope this novice logic helps you.

There is a know handshake issue between HDMI and DTV TIVO. It is from TIVO not your receiver. Now the PS3 issue is a puzzle. Make sure you have PS3 firmware update 1.32. They have correct HDMI handshake issues. You must go to PS3 site , (see link below). Click on it, and you will see instructions for download. A warning, the file is huge and may take a while to download if you used PS3 via modem. Here is link to system update:
PS3 Update firmware (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates)

I personally think the problem is on components end not your 6090.

Well I was able to create the firmware update CD and successfully updated the Reciever....however the problem is still there.

The DTV HD Tivo box goes out regardless of whether I am watching Recorded programming or regular programming. This did'nt ever happen while I was using the Monoprice switch to control the video output of the TIVO box or the PS3.

I am running the latest firmware update 1.32 on the PS3 and as of now am losing my signal within 5 minutes of playing.

I have not changed my setup besides for adding the reciever, and had no issues when I was just using the HDMI Monoprice switcher for picture and a sony reciever for sound.

I am running this setup with a Mitsubishi Projector HC3000.

Out of curiosity. Is there a way to hook this up so my Monoprice recieves the signal from the projector rather than the reciever. If I hook up the main line to the Monoprice Output, would I than run the sound to the reciever in an input or an output? By doing that do I lose my ability to upconvert? Will the reciever only handle sound than and not video?

I think I am heading to Best Buy to exchange the reciever for another next...to see if I just got bad HDMI ports on this one.

Thanks for all your help so far...hopefully tonight I can watch a Blu-Ray DVD in peace...

Okay. I need more information. Why are you upconverting the signals from PS3 and HD tivo? If you have enabled upconversion (Yamah 6090 has enabled upconversion by default) then you are "down" converting both HD sources (ps3 and HD tivo) to 480p. Go into set-up menu in 6090, turn off upconversion. The HDMI upconversion will automatically be disabled and you will not see it in set-up menu. My understand is that the HC3000 project has HDMI (1 input). Plug each component (PS3 first, then switch to HD TIVO) and see if you can play video with just the PS3 plugged directly into the HC3000. My guess is there must be a compatibility issue between one of the following components: PS3, Tivo, 6090, and HC3000 projector HDMI. It may be your projector. But If you try the above suggestion and both the PS3 and Tivo play over the HC3000 directly, then it must be the 6090. Let us know what you do, and be detailed on explaining your connections. Also, one final suggestion/question...what cables are you using for HDMI? I assume it is Monoprice HDMI, which is a good cable. But, there is a small chance the HDMI cable is bad.

Anyone using a Series 3 HiDef TiVo with this?

What about a PC or HTPC witha DVI-HDMI connector, running 1920x1080?

I already own a monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch, and the above components are connected to it (among other more generic ones like a DVD upconverter, and a PS3 in the future!) ... I intend to use the 6090 as the video passthrough, by connecting the monoprice switch's output to it, and having the Yamaha handle audio from those sources that send audio, and merely passtrhough video (like my PC desktop at 1920x1080) for the others to my 1080P LCD.

Thanks!

So if I read correctly, if I were to, say, connect my 360 to this receiver via component, turn off the upconversion and connect the receiver to a 1080p televsion via HDMI that I'll get 1080i through to the tv? My Earlier Questions (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9476193&&#post9476193) are now moot, as I went ahead and bought a PS3 with the expiring one-time special arragement (plus RewardZone $$$) I had available to use, on a big-ticket item exchange, with a specific Best Buy store manager - but in case anyone's interested, Best Buy is eager to discount the 6090 in-store, to levels close to online prices (which are WAYYYY under their instore prices). For those who would rather buy locally, and can leverage other things (gift cards, rewards points) to sweeten the pot - this may be of interest!

Maybe I'll look into a receiver upgrade someday, but my monoPrice HDMI switch & Yamaha 5790 will have to suffice for now :)

I still hope someone responds and confirms whether the Yamaha 6090 can, in fact, handle PC DVI sources at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz! TIA

Your Xbox 360 will out put 1080i via component but like you said, turn off upconversion in menu first.

I have not tested, but I am not sure I agree. According to the manual, the upconverting is needed to take the analog signal and convert it to digital. It also states that this conversion is only available for 480i input signals. Other signals will be downconverted to 480i before they are converted to HDMI output. The manual even states that you may see a degradation of the signal.

Have you actually tested this?

This is what I found looking at the manual online:

" ... When analog video signals with 1080i or 720p of resolution are up-converted to HDMI and output at the HDMI OUT jack, the picture quality may worsen ..."

So it may actually work, but at the expense of quality lose. I guess I'll have to experiment and see what I get ...

I will, but unfortunately it won't be for another month or so. I do plan on getting a PS3 and an upconverting DVD player, so sources won't be an issue ;) ...

I just purchased this receiver to replace my old RX-V992. I am totally BLOWN AWAY with how good this receiver sounds along with my Aperion Intimus speakers. I put in T2, cranked it up and was amazed! So much better than my old box....and all the digital inputs! :p

Only problem I have seen so far is the YPAO seems to set the subwoofer level way too soft. Has anyone else had this issue?

I would recommend this to anyone, has all the important features of the RX-V1700 and saves you some $$$$.

I noticed the subwoofer output was too low as well.

I just did the automatic adjustment to set my speakers distances and levels, then I put a good sub track rave song and adjusted the sub cross over frequency and loudness to my liking.

I have two powered subs, one is an Energy 8" and the second is a Pure Accoustics 10". I think that the microphone was a tad freaked out at my sub volume, either that or the Yamaha guys just don't like bass :)

Thanks people, this is great information. I have a Toshiba HD-A2 and I the only way I can take full advantage of the true hd audio is to use the HDMI output. Does the 6090 process this? This would be one of the main reasons I would spend that kind of money on a new receiver since I really don't need one. It sounds like a really nice receiver. How's the remote control? I have the A1, and it does an excellent job with HDMI out from the 1st gen Toshiba. I am very pleased with the 6090. I also have PS3, DirecTV, and computer hooked up to it.

I know precise price discussions are frowned upon here, but people SHOULD be aware that Best Buy has ginormous margins on Home Theater, and managers are always willing to haggle. You won't know unless you ask ;)

There's a reason why I have bought almost ALL my HT gear from Best Buy (yeah, settling for mid-high level, at best, is one of the reasons - but since that is ALL I can afford anyway, it's moot!), and why the managers know me by name now :)

Hey,
I bought the 6090 about a month or so ago. The only issue I seem to be having with it is an audio problem. On certain hd channels(cbs, fsny) i seem to lose the audio when the show changes from commercial back to the program. I've seen this mostly watching football on cbs. I've my cable company come and change a few cables, and they claim i have a very strong signal so im leaning towards the receiver. My friend also has a yamaha receiver and he seems to be experiencing the same problem. anyone have any ideas?

Ooohh - excellent question about the Phono input! What's different? Something to do with amplification? Impedance? My 5790 has it too, and I don't use it (obviously) because anything connected to it sounds different.

I know I could probably look at the manual for an answer, but with all the knowledgable people here ... :)

From the Manual:

The PHONO jacks are only compatible with a turntable with an MM or a high-output MC cartridge. To connect a turntable with a lowoutput MC cartridge to the PHONO jacks, use an in-line boosting transformer or an MC-head amplifier.

I saw your PM, but there really isn't much I can offer. I stopped researching $$$ 3 weeks ago, and have decided to wait for an HDMI 1.3-capable receiver in my (3 digit) price range. I may have a long wait, but love my 5790 and plain old 1.5mbps optical audio tracks from BluRay discs until then :)

I can't recommend you even bother with the 5990 at this point. For the 6090, try J&R, Cruthcfield, ebay, and then go talk nicely to a Tweeter or Best Buy manager if you don't mind paying a (negotiated) slightly higher price for good local service.

I bought the 6090 at Best Buy last week for $779. I printed out B&H Camera's ad and J&R's ad and took them into the store. The manager added shipping and made me use the B&H price since J&R was out of stock. Still ended up with a $220 discount from shelf price.

They will price match internet prices, don't let people tell you they wont.

I posted this elsewhere, but thought it was worth posting in this thread as well...

I need a receiver for use with my PS3 and see a couple of you recommended the Yamaha HTR-6090 within the master sticky thread at the top of the forum. Great. Rather than spending hours researching yet another A/V purchase, I just decided their recommendation on this model is fine (I'm sick of researching A/V gear!) I just need something to send the 1080p PS3 signal through HDMI.

I just talked to two of my local BB stores (in CT) about the Yamaha HTR-6090. CC doesn't carry Yamaha. I thought I'd give the local guys a chance since I see a couple of you claim you can get steep discounts through BB if you ask. Both stores quoted a price of $999. Since J&R has it for $699 including shipping, I would have been happy buying it locally for under $750 including our 6% tax. After taking with two sales guys and two managers, the best price these guys were willing to give me on the receiver was $950 w/o tax. What a joke! I don't mind paying a little more for local gratification, but $300+ dollars more??? Oh well...

Anyway, I looked online and saw several of the NY 'bait and switch' stores have the HTR-6090 for $629 plus ~$30 S&H. I called J&R to see if they'd match (or come close to matching) this price. The salesman at J&R pointed out these prices were not from authorized dealers. I told him I realized that, but $40 is $40. So I asked him what was the lowest he could go, knowing he works on commission. He ended up giving me the HTR-6090 for $675 including S&H. That price seemed more than fair to me so I placed the order. I've had excellent luck with J&R in the past so I thought I'd pass this along. :)

Now I just hope the guys steered me right on picking this Yamaha... :D

I work at Best Buy and can get a HTR-6090 for the same price that I can get a Onkyo TX-SR674, since we carry Yamaha recievers, and was wondering what makes the 6090 so much better than the SR674.

I'm sort of biased towards Onkyo stuff, I bought the HT-S650 HTIB system when it was all the rage 3 or 4 years ago and really love it. I need to upgrade the reciever though, need some highdef hookups. I would like to continue to use the speakers that came with that package till I can afford new ones, would that be ok with the 6090 or the SR674?

Yamaha HTR-5990 vs HTR-6090

I have a Denon AVR-2803 right now and was thinking of upgrading to a HDMI receiver. I have been looking at Denons and Onkyos, but I was at BB today and noticed two Yamaha receivers HTR-5990 and HTR-6090. They are both similar specs. Looks like 6090 is newer and costs $999, but I noticed people have gotten it lower at J&R, etc. They also had the 5990 at $599 clearance. They also had a open box which gets you a $100 gift card, no cash rebate. But I found a 20% off open box coupon online. There is also 10% off clearance on the new ones. The open box one is missing the manual (I think the remote is available). The HDMI ports in the back are scratched up. How does the 5990 compare to the 6090? How do these compare to the Onkyo 804 and Denon 2807?

truckie16
02-19-07, 06:19 AM
I looked at all of those models you are interested in. IMO the 2807 is the better of them but all are very nice receivers. It's also the most expensive of them and I couldn't find a deal on it anywhere. My BB did agree to price match the 6090 from B&H for $760 but I didn't pull the trigger on it because I hadn't had a chance to audition any Yamaha and when I did finally listen to the RXV1600(same as the 5990) it was not as good as the others IMO.

As far as the difference between the 5990 and 6090. Go to Yamaha's web site and do a comparison there is not much of a difference at all. My BB had only 1 open box 5990 and it was missing everything except the manual, even the power cord was missing.

I ended up going with a Pioneer elite VSX81TXV OB from BB with the 20% coupon. Unfortunately I can't hook it up till my basement is finished in about a week to 10 days.

Too much toy isn't it? :D I normally use Straight mode, the way the movies were authored.
Next, check out SACD if you have a PS3. :)
Yes, way too many SS modes to deal with IMO. I can't imagine anyone actually using all (or even many) of them. I also can't imagine using all of the surround/phantom speakers this thing can accommodate, although I do wonder how that would sound. I just don't think the wife would be happy with me putting like 10 speakers in our BR... :o

I assume you are referring to Straight PCM? I tried this and I noticed I didn't seem to be getting any sound out of my rear speakers (5.1 system). I only listen for about 30 seconds during T2, but after I put in into "Movie" mode I instantly noticed sound from the rears. Am I doing something wrong?

Another question... When I'm listening to a DVD with lets say DTS ES encoding, shouldn't the receiver say on the display that it's receiving this signal? I didn't notice this displayed on the receiver last night as I was turning it off to got to bed. I meant to bring the owners manual with me to work today, but I forgot. While on this topic, I've noticed the owners manual leaves a little to be desired regarding thorough explanations. :(

BTW, I took your advice and ordered a demo SACD from Amazon. I've never heard a SACD, but since the PS3 will play them I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you know what I think of it after I receive it. I'm looking forward to hearing it! :)

If this is legit, that's a great deal!

It is Legit. $549.00, no tax, and free Fedex three day air. I was going to get a HTR-5960 or RX-V659, but this was too good to pass up, and its close to the 6090 in many respects, but half the money.

I also read online reviews for One Call, and they are very highly reviewed, and, as i said before, an authorized dealer which makes a HUGE difference.

Thanks for the welcome!

You made a good call :-) I bought my big screen TV and a DVD player from them back in 2001. They are very good. I also bought my Canon Digital Rebel from then two years ago. Good to do business with.

I am in the same boat as you. Eyeing a 6090 and 5990. There is a 5990 at the local Best Buy that is open box. They are giving it for $599 - $100 gift card. I also have a 20% of coupon on top of that. I am tempted. However, I don't know if it was a display model or a return or if it was abused.

Also, looking through the manual for both models, here are the differences that could affect me (at least in the future).

5990 passes only 1080i through HDMI, 6090 does 1080p. My HD-ILA JVC TV is only 1080i through HDMI but this receiver is not future proof.

5990 supports only 5.1 channel PCM through HDMI and only upto 96kHz sampling rate. 6090 does 8 channel PCM upto 192 kHz.

I don't really care of the iPod compatibility, etc. I actually sold my iPod mini because I wasn't really listening to portable music.

I am tempted to just get it home and audition it and compare it to my 3 year old Denon AVR-2803. If it sounds less impressive than the Denon on just CDs, I will just return it. I will not give up the clarity of audio quality for all kinds of decoder support.

Could you elaborate? I just set mine to 1080p and assumed everything was GTG... but I never checked.

I'm probably worrying too much. One person with a 2 year old Toshiba 720P DLP and a 2700 couldn't video. He took it back to the dealer where it worked with using his cables. So there could be some compatibility issues with older displays. I have a Sharp LC45GX6U that will do 1080P direct direct to panel when bypassing the outboard video control box and 1080i when going through the box. I'm planning on wiring it both ways with a Monoprice 2X1 HDMI switch run in reverse. When you add the 6090 I've got some serious cabling going on.
