View Full Version : Microsoft HD DVD Insiders Tour for AVS Forum
Hello everyone. With vacation and IFA almost out of the way, we are ready to restart the “Microsoft HD DVD Insiders Tour for AVS Forum” that I have promised for so long :). The first one now is at CEDIA. Here are the details.
When: Sunday the 17th. Start time: 10:00am. End time: 12:00pm.
Where: The HD DVD Mobile Experience (decked out with new Marantz 1080p projector and good audio).
How: You need to RSVP. And this time, we have a better system than using PM at AVS Forum :).
RSVP by Phone: 1-877-673-8368
RSVP Link: http://msevents.microsoft.com/cui/eventdetail.aspx?culture=en-US&eventid=1032307957+&x=7&y=12 (requires a Passport ID. If attendees don’t want to use/create a Passport ID then they should register by phone)
Event Code: 1032307957 (required)
Questions: Please send email to avshddvd@microsoft.com. My inbox is almost full here so please don’t PM on this topic.
What you can expect: I will be giving background/history on these formats, and answer any and all questions you might have about anything related to these formats. We will then have Kevin Collins on my team who is an expert on iHD and works closely with studios on title creation to talk about that end of the business. The highlight of the event is seeing unreleased movie titles that we have test discs for (and permission to show you -- usually from Warner).
Note that we can only seat 30 people. If we get 15 or less, there will be a single event. If we get more than 15, we will run two events concurrently and I will timeshare between them. So if you want to come, please RSVP asap as we can not go past the maximum count.
Note that you do not need to own an HD DVD player to come. Or be an AVS Forum member. However, we do reserve the right to approve who comes and non-forum members need to be invited by someone who is a member. I also like to avoid having a cat fight with BD fans:). So if you are not interested in potentially purchasing an HD DVD player, then it does not make sense for you to attend.
So I look forward to seeing you there. The last one in LA was a lot of fun and we have learned how to fine tune things. And we all get to put a face with the words here.
We will be organizing the visits for the rest of the country later so if you can’t make it to CEDIA, there will be other opportunities.
cluelesspa 09-04-06, 12:02 AM SWEET. I wish I was in Denver that week :(
if you ever want to come to Pittsburgh, PA would be glad to host the mobile truck.
Thanks for the offer! I don't know when we will make it to PA but priority does go up when folks help organize things for us :).
raptor3076 09-04-06, 12:49 AM Any chance of a stop in the good old Seattle area?
Any chance of a stop in the good old Seattle area?
Yes :). Details of that to come soon. Will be in the next couple of weeks I hope at a local high-end shop.

Any chance of a stop in the Houston area?
Yeh, if you can tell me where I had great Cajon food there 16 years ago :).
Seriously, we can come to any city if there is sufficient number of people coming, and some place would host the event with great A/V. Go ahead and browse the "Meet the cook" thread to see if others have voted for Huston and whether you can pair up with them to get us to come...

John Kotches 09-04-06, 01:48 AM Amir:
I signed up, as I haven't had a chance to meet Kevin ;)
Out of curiosity, will you be inviting any of those boring audio types with you too?
Best,
Out of curiosity, will you be inviting any of those boring audio types with you too?
Best,
Oh anyone can come but our material of course will be video centeric. Kevin has done a lot to make the audio good though in the truck by begging for high-end gear from Harmon. :)
John Kotches 09-04-06, 02:06 AM Amir:
That's a typo on my part. I meant to type "will you be bringing"...
I'll harass you on the truck ;)
Cheers,
John Kotches 09-04-06, 02:07 AM BTW:
Transcodes from WMA Lossless to AAC Lossless are painfully slow. :(
DTV TiVo Dealer 09-04-06, 03:42 AM I'll be there. Thanks Amir for making this happen.
-Robert
I will be there with a guest who is also attending Cedia (JSG) 2 total. Just registered by phone for both of us. Nice painless phone support once I had enough sense to give the event code.
Is it possible for someone to record the event and/or create a transcript/synopsis for the forum folks who can't make one of these events? I think everyone would love to hear the presenters and the question/answer sessions.
BenDover 09-04-06, 10:13 AM amir, based on your numbers then, I would expect NYC to happen very soon ?!? :D
mikemorel 09-04-06, 10:36 AM I heard BD was doing the same thing, except of couse it was highly secrative, and therefore is not meant for public scrutiny...
I heard BD was doing the same thing, except of couse it was highly secrative, and therefore is not meant for public scrutiny...and it was potentially going to happen ....in the future.... :D
nakedeye 09-04-06, 11:29 AM Well the BD yeilds are now at 80% for that event so it should be comming any day now...
and it was potentially going to happen ....in the future.... :D
I hear the truck for the BD tour has twice the capacity of the HD DVD truck :D
HiFiGuy1 09-04-06, 11:34 AM Of course they don't have enough space yet to do it justice, since that truck is still on "special order", and there won't be room for more than a few viewers, since they decided to install the entire popcorn machine and fountain drink dispenser in the box van they bought off the showroom floor, instead of just letting us bring in drinks and popcorn buckets. :D

I don't think so Tom. I try to be VERY candid in the event, answering questions that I do not here in public. We swear the attendees to secracy btw. For example, while we do show unreleased content, we ask that people not come and mention which movies they saw. Everyone followed the rules I am happy to say after the LA event so we are going to keep doing it this way.

Well I am just a video (and roller coaster enthusiast) and am not privy to attending CEDA, but you guys just keep doing what you are doing. Good job! It just kills me you guys can't talk about what you hear (and see!) I will wait for the crumbs that come out of CEDA. You guys always like to leak "a little." Have fun.
SpHeRe31459 09-04-06, 05:41 PM I'm not making it to CEDIA this year, but I hope to make a San Francisco visit.
Yeh, if you can tell me where I had great Cajon food there 16 years ago :).
Near downtown or out in the 'burbs by the Compaq/HP campus? (or elsewhere?)
If it was the CPQ/HPQ campus, then it was either Atchafalaya (now out of business) or Pappadeaux. Both easily beaten by places run by real Cajuns (e.g., Floyd's on Durham, Ragin' Cajun on Richmond). If you were somewhere else, then I need a few more hints. How authentic do you want to go? It's a little warm, right now, for mudbugs, but give it a few months, and they will be back in season. ;)
Of course, if you want to put Austin on the list, I can make that, too. :D
Later,
Bill
nakedeye 09-04-06, 07:37 PM I hear the truck for the BD tour has twice the capacity of the HD DVD truck :D
I think the BD tour truck will lost in 2007
eizenga13 09-04-06, 08:04 PM I'm there, it sounds like a great opportunity to drain a few brains in Colorado!
I don't think so Tom. I try to be VERY candid .
I understand, thanks for your great support and I hope a few well planted leaks dribble their way our way :D Or was that Valerie Plame I saw you with?
jocktheglide 09-05-06, 07:12 AM by any chance will you talk about the laptop HD DVD if are i will come to it with my laptop.
Ridebreck 09-05-06, 05:03 PM Just registered! Unfortunately, I'll have to sneak out about 15 minutes early to catch my ride to the Broncos game, but I look forward to meeting you guys and catching some top secret info.
by any chance will you talk about the laptop HD DVD if are i will come to it with my laptop.
Kevin Collins who will be there plays a lot with the Toshiba laptop. So should be able to answer your questions...
Near downtown or out in the 'burbs by the Compaq/HP campus? (or elsewhere?)
I wish I could remember. It was in 1989. We were doing a final install of these computers at Nasa (for flight simulation) and went out to celebrate in this restaurant in the middle of nowhere (woods around it). And old Cajon gentleman was the owner/chef and fed us some of the best Cajun food I had before then. Since then, I had the pleasure of feasting in New Orleans so I am not sure I would be as impressed today, as I was then :).
gonzalc3 09-06-06, 10:05 AM Amir,
When are you coming to DC?
We haven't set the schedule for any of the other visits yet. The next even will probably be Seattle since it is easier to do.
wjmeyer 09-07-06, 12:36 PM Amirn - Most of our restaurants in downtown New Orleans are back open and conventions are returning, and, the French Quarter is as it was before Katrina. Our seafood, crawfish etouffee, fried shrimp po-boys, etc. is as good as ever. Hur. Katrina messed up a large part of eastern part of the city, but downtown and Jefferson parish (between city and airport) is back to normal.
I wish more audio-video events would come down here, we are back to being a party destination, even cruise ships will be back here in 2007.
We haven't set the schedule for any of the other visits yet. The next even will probably be Seattle since it is easier to do.
That's great news, count me in for Seattle as well...I'll definitely make the 3-hour car trip up from Portland for this.
thebland 09-09-06, 08:20 AM Detroit!!

Just letting people know that we have closed invitations on this list. We have about 24 people so we are hoping to get everyone into one session so that we can all talk at the same time. It will be rather cozy so don't eat too much before you come, so that you take less space :D.
Look forward to seeing the people who are coming this weekend!
b5lurker 09-17-06, 10:37 PM Thanks for inviting the AVS'rs to the HD-DVD Mobile Experience this morning. It was a very informative time, and convinced me that I made the proper investment 3 weeks ago in HD-DVD. I was a huge Blu-Ray supporter, but you guys successfully switched me over to the HD-DVD camp today! I still want a PS3 so that I can have both formats, but I will now buy HD-DVD versions of discs over Blu-Ray, VC1 rules!
All AVS'rs should make the effort to go to this as it visits other cities! The only problem is that long semi trailer has a better setup them mine at home (that 1080p projector is awesome). Oh well, just need to spend more money now. :)
Thanks again Amir and everyone else that you had there to talk and answer questions.
Steve
squidboy 09-18-06, 11:11 AM I'll throw in my thanks too. It was great to meet some of the people who post here.
Even though I'm still sitting on the fence in the format war, I'm definately leaning more towards the HD-DVD side. This was my first chance to see HD on disc on a nice system, so that was great.
It was cool to get to see the clips of the unreleased movies. And that King Kong trailer was incredible, better than it looked in the theater.
BTW, the "seats" in the trailer suck. :o
Ridebreck 09-18-06, 05:44 PM Thanks to all who organized this event. It was an eye opener for sure. Sorry I had to bug out early on you guys, but I got a call that my ride was leaving right then and I had to book it 4 blocks to the hotel. Wish I could have hung around longer.
It was a great event. The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift Demo of HDi and the other clips were eye opening.
The program material shown has converted my associate who also attended into a raving HD DVD fan, as the material presented was among the best, if not the best, HD content that was at the Cedia show. And I saw over a dozen HD 1080p projectors displays, being fed from servers, HD DVD and Blu-ray players.
I encourage every AVSr to attend who wants a knowledge of HD DVD or to see what a nicely calibrated display should look like.
It was nice to see people in person.
Thanks for the feedback and kind words. I enjoyed interacting with you all. And of course, we are really appreciative if your support of HD DVD!
squidboy 09-20-06, 10:17 AM Well, I thought I could hold out. But after seeing how good HD DVD looked and then coming back to the macro-blockiness of DirecTV, I went and picked up a player and some disks last night.
So to you fellow AVSers who don't want to be converted, stay far far away from this tour. :p

I was just about to get down to scheduling the rest of the visits but came home to see a Jury Summons. So I have to see how that goes before I can finalize the rest of the visits.
I wonder if the court accepts visiting you all as a valid reason to skip jury duty. I mean, it is not every day that you are involved in a format battle. :D
DigitalfreakNYC 09-20-06, 11:21 AM You let them know that the east coast is waiting for you, Amir. We got your back! we'll give contact #'s in case they need references. ;)

Person99 09-21-06, 12:58 PM Dallas this weekend!
Hi Amir, does this mean your traveling where ever the mobile truck is going and we can use the schedule on thelookandsoundofperfect.com to figure out when your coming to our cities?
Looking forward to you's coming to the Philadelphia area.
FlashJim 09-21-06, 02:20 PM I know about 10 people that would show up in Houston in a heartbeat.
Yes we were hoping to use the truck but my availability is up in the air until I deal with a jury summons I just got....
rwestley 09-21-06, 10:01 PM Most states let you pospone Jury Duty at least once. See you in New York any week but Sept 30th.
HiFiGuy1 09-22-06, 12:28 PM Amir,
Thanks for the chance to participate in the tour event. Sorry I was late, especially because I missed the first clip! I would like to mention that I would strongly support an HD DVD tour event in New Orleans also. It is a great old city on the mend, and it might even be good PR for Microsoft and HD DVD to show public support of the citizens of New Orleans by having an event there. The food goes without saying. I have a friend there (fellow store owner) that could probably host the event, maybe even in his showroom. I would have to call him first. Let me know if that interests you.
JustAsk 09-22-06, 06:54 PM Amir,
My Toshiba HD-XA1 and my first HD-DVD arrived this week. So, I would love to join all of you when the truck comes to Atlanta to learn more about HD-DVD. I am sure I can bring at least three people with me.
Just Ask

I will certainly consider stopping by. I have a lot of fond memories of New Orleans.
But we need a venue for sure. Can you find a public showroom for us?

donyoop 09-25-06, 08:42 PM Amir,
Thanks for the AVS insider tour at Cedia. I enjoyed the presentation almost as much as I enjoy my HD-A1 at home. Your story about the evolution of VC-1 was interesting and entertaining. I highly recommend the tour to fellow AVs members who may get a chance to see this. When Kevin says reference, it is reference. I was impressed.
It's too bad that the satellite companies aren't poised to use VC-1 instead of Mpeg 4 as their codec of the future.
Don
Thanks a lot Don. I am glad ou enjoyed it.
I hope we can get other companies to also take a serious look at VC-1...
Hello Amir:
Thanks again for your continued discussions with everyone here. I am looking forward to the HD Mobile Tour. TheLookAndSoundOfPerfect has the truck scheduled for the Philadelphia area in late October. I was wondering if you will be attending any of the days it will be here?
cnickersonjr 09-26-06, 11:48 PM I know about 10 people that would show up in Houston in a heartbeat.
I know I would! I almost drove to Dallas. Can we get a Houston stop?
cnickersonjr 09-26-06, 11:51 PM Did they have a running 360 drive on display? If so can anyone comment on performance? Details please, I am desperate.
EDIT: I just check the lookandsoundofperfect site. The have pics of the 360 and the add-on in a plastic case running , what appears to be Lord of the Rings video!
cnickersonjr 09-27-06, 12:22 AM AmirM! Does this have any truth to it? http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showpost.php?p=839187&postcount=66

I went to see the mobile truck today. The 360 add-on is still a prototype in it's plastic case. They were unsure of when they would get real thing. On the plus side, we got free T-shirts and a scratch off to win a free HD DVD. You can also sign up to win a home theatre.
We watched their new demo for about 15 minutes. Superman Returns looked to be the best of the 4 demos. Much more detailed than Serenity.

Amir, wondering if you can answer this one.
I am looking at the schedules for the mobile event to see if I can line up with some of them. Right now, I dont' have the confirmation for any of it though.
Amir
Will you be at the NYC Javits Center event this month? The tour is scheduled to be there.

DTV TiVo Dealer 10-04-06, 07:28 PM ^^ Amir, I hope you do make this one, I'll be there and so will several key Toshiba technical and marketing management executives.
The show is Digital Life and MicroSoft is a major exhibitor.
-Robert
I know theres atleast a half dozen of us HD DVD regular posters here on AVS all from the Philly area, so I'm hoping you can make that one if possibile. I plan on going anyway but it would be nice to meet everyone from here together
It looks likely that I will be there for this one. I will confirm soon.
I will be there (scheduling permitting)!
rwestley 10-05-06, 02:15 PM Hope you can make NY. I will be there with another person.
Let us know as soon as you can.
Putting a note here also, letting folks know that I am set to come to NY, if we can get enough interest. Please see this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=733317

Unfortunately not on this trip as I have to be back in the office on Friday. But we will hit all the other major cities which people have expressed interest in.
DigitalfreakNYC 10-07-06, 02:04 PM Is there a chance of actually coming to NYC? Most of us don't have cars here and Scarsdale is a little far out.

Ah, didn't think about that. We have the truck there but unfortunately, it doesn't look like it is ready by then. Do others have the same issue?

Any idea if you will make your way down I-5 to Portland? I found this too late to attend the Bellvue function.

If you can get sufficient interest (at least 10 people) and a location to host us, sure.
I'd like to thank Amir, Robert and the rest of the Toshiba and MS representatives that were there and the very informative gathering. I'm more psyched then ever about HD-DVD. I highly recommend EVERYONE to take the opportunity to check this out. I was really amazed by some of what I've seen.

Agreed. An absolutely fantastic night. Nice to meet some other forum members as well. Would have been nice if everyone had introduced themselves. :) I look forward to seeing some of you guys at the Javits Center. :)
Yes-- thanks guys, tonight was great!!!
rwestley 10-12-06, 08:10 AM A big thanks to Amir, Robert and all involved for a great event. Great information from the cook and the waiters.
I’m jealous…. Amir any chance or word yet on whether or not you will make the Philadelphia tour stop, its scheduled for Oct 26?
BenDover 10-12-06, 09:05 AM i'll echo the sentiments of others here thanking amir, kevin, the training guys from toshiba and of course last but not least, robert and his helper(s).
thanks for all the info and fielding everyone's questions...the tale of your journey to where you, and MS, have come from and where you are now was most informative and really, i think, puts your presence (as well as kevin's) on these boards in an even more favorable light...it was VERY clear that you are enthusiasts like the rest of us...difference being you actually get paid to do what you love...that is the best type of job in the world!
name tags or or quick introductions would have been cool...although i admit i fealt akward saying, 'hey, bendover here' :)

GmanAVS 10-12-06, 12:16 PM Great evening, I concur... name tags a must.... Chap, was looking forward meeting you but now I still don't know who you are....
OK, next time, like in 1st grade, we stand up and say who we are! :p
my personal thoughts on the evening here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8640309&&#post8640309)
can't wait to see and be in the "truck" this Sat....... how deep does the rabbit hole go? ;)
Thanks for the great feedback. We wanted to do two things different in this meeting. We did one and forgot the other. The thing we did was to make the format more interactive rather than us talking a lot. That seems to have worked. And of course, the thing we forgot for the fourth time, was asking people to introduce themselves and bring name tags for everyone. Oh well. :) Whoever comes to the future one, be sure to remind us about this if we forget.
DVDoctor 10-12-06, 10:05 PM Ah, didn't think about that. We have the truck there but unfortunately, it doesn't look like it is ready by then. Do others have the same issue?
Scarsdale is a quick train ride from Grand Central Station, and Garth road is right by the train Station

He has called for HD DVD's demise many times. After revealing the full truth to him, Jeff may freak out. :D (just kidding)
That red pill is a nasty one to swallow, but truth lies within. The Blu pill leaves you in slumber land, head in sand, blissfully unaware.
Seriously, Art has a nice theater (never seen, but only can imagine). I know Kevin would sure love to see it :p

Toronto and Vancouver will be the two most popular cities, I think.
Toronto and Vancouver will be the two most popular cities, I think.
In a parallel thread, a lot of people have post about Toronto so we will add that to the calendar.
On Vancouver, it is of course close to our home town :). Would be interested to know how much interest there is for that.
David Susilo 11-03-06, 11:10 PM I for one will be part of it (if I'm not going to be at any studio on that day)
Thank you!!

blb3, KevinCol in another thread today said that the Philly Nov 9th date is cancelled :( I didnt hear about any new dates.
alfbinet 11-04-06, 12:28 AM The title says it all. I could do Pittsburgh.
metalsaber 11-04-06, 11:58 AM The title says it all. I could do Pittsburgh.
I'm 45miles north of Pittsburgh and would do Pittsburgh or somewhere in between.

Oh well, maybe I'll be able to catch them at CES. Thanks for the update
BTW, I did not get selected for Jury duty. So we are in the process of finalizing a few more visits. The current list of cities to hit for the remainder of the year are, San Francisco, LA, Dallas and London. If we can do more, we will be it is difficult to manage all the logistics before the year runs out....
Vern Dias 11-06-06, 06:26 PM Amir:
Do you have a site yet for Dallas?
I live in Southlake (about 15 minutes northwest of the DFW airport and would be willing to volunteer my HT for the meet.
I have a Sony Qualia 004 projecting on a 5' x 14' 2.70:1 curved screen using an anamorphic lens and a CII scaler.
Room seats about 15, although only 9 seats are in the optimum viwing area.
The room can handle more, but the seating would be on folding chairs.
Let me know.

Dallas? So you're making a second trip to Dallas? I missed the Sept one. If this is true, what date is the second visit scheduled for?

No, I never went to Dallas. This is the first visit (it is possible the truck was there though).

Yes, someone (from AVS Forum) is organizing it for us at one of the high-end shops.

Wow, this is pretty nice setup! Let's keep your offer as a back up for now if the other does not work out. I will be creating new threads for each city so we can keep track of things that way.

Ooops. I thought you were on the truck :o Parden my lack of knowledge. I would like to be at your Dallas meet, depending on when it's scheduled. I have to drive like 5 hours to Dallas. I have family there, and I think it would be worth it.

I offered to drive the truck but they said they don't let VPs do that :D. Seriously, while we do use the truck when we can, the two activities are very different. The truck is a marketing event, whereas my visits are really informal and designed to get to know people and interact in a more fluid manner than this forum.
The tentative date for Dallas is December 2nd btw.

Thanks. So do you have to RSVP or what? Are the number of seats limited?
Amir any word on a new Philly date, there are alot of us from the Philly area & NJ here on the boards and the last two dates scheduled were both cancelled?
Yes, we set up an electronic RSVP system as there is usually more demand than the hosting fascility can handle. I will try to put links in these threads when I post the info but for the next few days, you may want to check this site daily :).
I'd like to throw a vote in for Detroit.

The dates that were cancelled were for the truck, not my visits. I really appreciate your interest and patience as we work through the schedule here. My work and family only allow me to be out of the office so much, during the end of the year. Trust me, I love to come there and enjoy the great food and interaction with you all. But I just don't know how to do manage it in the next 8 weeks.

Hi Amir and thanks for taking the time to answer my post. I apoligize if I wasnt clear in my post, I was refering overall to the truck dates. I know you're not with the truck full time and it would only be an added bonus/luck if you do can make it.
So at this point I'm just trying to verify the truck dates, it was first due last month and then the week before it got rescheduled to Nov 9 (this week) but KevinCol says that is cancelled also.
BTW thelookandsoundofperfect is still showing it as Nov 9th

I'll want to make Dallas depending on schedule I assume the thread links will appear here?
I know a high end shop that would pobably host it as well if a backup is needed.
I just liked the vision of Amir driving the truck. :D
Seriously, I have attended this event. Well worth your time.
Its not everyday you can meet and greet some of the personalities that are delivering great high definition goodness to us mere home theater enthuiasts.
SDouglas 11-07-06, 02:22 AM I'm the one who has been doing some legwork on a Dallas venue for Amir's visit. I should have a decision on the date from the store owner in the next few days.
If for some reason the timing on the venue doesn't work out, I'm happy to see the offers from Vern and Dahlsim on other possibilities. Let's get Amir here sooner rather than later so that we can see and talk more HD DVD!

Yes, all the visits will have their own threads. But I usually try to put a link here too.

Are there any details available on an event during CES? The Look and Sound of Perfect site still says TBD

Well, the truck will be inside the exhibit area so you can go there anytime.
However, the special AVS Forum insider invite-only session will be on 1/9 after the show closes (~6:00pm). I was just about to post the RSVP link but the darn site is down :(. As soon as it is fixed, I will post it.
rwestley 01-02-07, 02:34 PM Is there any way to change it to Monday night or a little earlier on Tuesday. The AVS party is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00pm.
Cross posting our CES meeting so that others who are subscribed to this thread also see it: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9374189#post9374189
And no, this is the only time slot we could find. The problem is that I have a ton of business meetings at CES so it was impossible to do it any other time.
