View Full Version : I want my GLADIATOR!!!
If there's one Universal title I absolutely want to view on HDDVD, it's none other!
What's taking them so loooong? Don't these guys know how bad I want this?
(maybe they are just holding out for a best effort xfer, you think?)
You have a UNI title better than Gladiator, list it here.
ryoohki 09-04-06, 11:43 AM Unfortunetly, they are not checking for title you want LOL! It will take years and years before everyone favorite movie are in HD".
b.greenway 09-04-06, 11:45 AM CMRA do you like movies about gladiators?
CMRA do you like movies about gladiators?
No, just Gladiator. Most played/watched SDDVD in my collection.
Amiable-Akuma 09-04-06, 11:54 AM Yeah, I don't think this one will be out any time soon. Can't wait though, just like you. Has been a while since I've seen it.
Luckily all signs point to Paramount giving us Braveheart in mid-November. That will tied me over.
BTW, I know Gladiator is Deamworks - are we sure that it's HD DVD could be coming out through Universal or at all?
If so, obviously that would be a cool HD DVD exclusive - something tells me I shouldn't hope for either of those two things though...
JMCecil 09-04-06, 11:57 AM CMRA do you like movies about gladiators?
LOL, I think the joke was missed............there's a movie that is begging to be HD.
Krammer1 09-04-06, 12:03 PM ..and DreamWorks is Paramount or so I've read.. they have the distribution rights to DreamWorks catalog.
Either way, this is one title I doubt Uni/Par will keep in the vault for a long time.
Q of BanditZ 09-04-06, 12:08 PM This is going to be amazing the day it comes out in HD.
SirDrexl 09-04-06, 12:36 PM I hate to burst your bubble, but this is a Sony title: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104346/dvd ;)
Oh, you're not wanting the Cuba Gooding Jr. movie??? :)
Anyway, I hope that when Paramount releases this, they will give us the theatrical version rather than the extended version (if they can't or won't do both). I didn't buy the 3-disc set, but I've heard that the extended version isn't as good, and Ridley Scott prefers the theatrical version.
Gojhawks 09-04-06, 02:05 PM CMRA do you like movies about gladiators?
You ever been in a cockpit before?
You ever seen a grown man naked?
Have you ever been to a Turkish prison?
chris062 09-04-06, 02:44 PM Speaking of movies to see on HD DVD, what about movies with hot chicks as opposed to sweaty men?
b.greenway 09-04-06, 02:54 PM I don’t know, that Volleyball scene in Top Gun was really steamy.
RobertR1 09-04-06, 03:18 PM Gladiator would make me VERY happy! Easily my top 3 movie of all time.
I'm very much in the Gladiator crowd. One of my favorite movies; it's going to be a good day when this one is released on HD DVD. Braveheart ranks up there as well. I couldn't even make a guess as to how many times I've watched those two movies and still am not tired of them.
To me, it makes sense for them to release their blockbuster movies as soon as possible. It would seem this would help with sales and promoting the format. But perhaps it's like others are saying, they just simply need time.
grayja1 09-04-06, 03:50 PM great post there b.greenway.... Had to bust out laughing as soon as I read that.. Also one of my favorite lines from that show.
I picked the wrong week to give up "........" or I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
romanesq 09-04-06, 03:50 PM Darn guess will have to make do with Braveheart until someone wakes up and realizes Gladiator would be met with lots of sales too.
Ug.
LOL, I think the joke was missed............there's a movie that is begging to be HD.
AIRPLANE!
Gladiator would make me VERY happy! Easily my top 3 movie of all time.
Braveheart > Gladiator, but yea Gladiator is good too.
TazExprez 09-04-06, 05:25 PM I really like Gladiator. This is one of the few SD DVD movies that I have watched on my HD-A1.
I Superman I 09-04-06, 07:15 PM Gladiator as well as Braveheart are ranked in the top area of my movie collections and couldn't wait for them to be released on HD DVD. However my most wanted are King Kong ( the new one just for the visual splendor ) and Jurrassic Park ( my favorite movie of all time ), if they were to release Jurrassic Park 1 and 2, then I'd be completly satisfied in the format, it could loose, die, whatever, but it would be worth it if I got those movies, especially the first one.
DigitalfreakNYC 09-04-06, 07:27 PM Braveheart > Gladiator, but yea Gladiator is good too.
Enh. I'll take Gladiator over that homophobic crap anyday.
Would love to see it on HD DVD.

Sorry but IMDB is WRONG!!! Gladiator is a Dreamworks title!! Dreamworks is now owned by Paramount. Go to another site for info. It is a Dreamworks/Universal financed title though. Dreamworks has the US rights while Universal claims the world rights.
Noggin1980 09-05-06, 01:42 AM you missed the joke tkbryant, read the post again and follow the link. He was teasing.
slider33 09-05-06, 03:32 AM Gladiator is hands-down the title I am most anticipating. Top Gun would be up there also. Both are in my top five.
The first 17 minutes of Gladiator would be great reference material for both Video and Sound. They need to get this title out...
Q of BanditZ 09-05-06, 10:07 AM Gladiator and Braveheart in HD for Christmas would be utterly amazing beyond words for me.

http://www.qrd.org/qrd/orgs/GLAAD/general.information/1995/reports-07.and.08.95
GLAAD read a script for this film last
September and immediately contacted Alan Ladd, the producer of
"Braveheart," to discuss what was perceived as extremely
negative gay stereotypes, including a number of homophobic
slurs in the
script, and a scene where one of the gay
characters is tossed out a window to his death. Mr. Ladd
declined to meet with GLAAD.
Although the homophobic slurs do not appear in the film, the
two gay characters: Edward II and his male companion, Philip,
are so ridiculously attired (including full make-up and
lipstick), they provoke the audience's laughter every time
they appear on-screen. Most offensive of all, in an entirely
unnecessary sequence, Edward's father, the King, tosses Philip
out a castle window to his death--to the applause and laughter
of the audience.

Nope, never heard about that, nor does it prove a damn thing. Just because some alien group of protesters doesn't agree with Mel Gibson's portrayal of King Edward doesn't mean anything to me. Never once did I view this film as homophobic, nor did 99% of other people that viewed this movie. It sounds like you are really reaching with that little tidbit of proof. Utterly ridiculous.
Craig, wasn't mocking, I did know. I was just waiting for your reply which I knew would be good,

If Craig is DigitalFreak, his response was piss-poor. I can't recall a single person that I know that watched Braveheart and said, "It was a good movie, except that part where Mel Gibson portrayed King Edward as a homo". Not a single person that I know of, even thought twice about that part.
Just because Mel Gibson has caught some bad press recently, it seems a few want to take it upon themselves to draw conclusions about the man and boycott his movies. So be it, but don't hand me that BS about Braveheart being homophobic, give me a F'ing break.
AUWingsFan 09-05-06, 02:25 PM I am looking forward to Gladiator in HD!! I love this movie...Russel Crowe was great in it, and so was Joaquin Phoenix, he was such a jerk!!

Controversy
Accusations of homophobia
Some gay rights groups accused Gibson of homophobia, after a 1992 interview in the Spanish magazine El Pais. Asked what he thought of gay people, he said, "They take it up the ass." Gibson gestured descriptively, continuing, "This is only for taking a ****." When the interviewer recalled that Gibson previously had expressed fear that people would think he is gay because he's an actor, Gibson replied, "Do I sound like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them? I think not." However, when reminded that he had worked closely with gay students at university, he said they were "kind people." Additionally, he later defended his comments on Good Morning America, saying, "[Those remarks were a response] to a direct question. If someone wants my opinion, I'll give it. What, am I supposed to lie to them?"[27][28] In the Playboy interview, he responded to GLAAD's protests over his comment with "I'll apologize when hell freezes over. They can **** off".[25] Eventually, however, to make amends with the gay community and show he was no longer homophobic, Gibson and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation hosted ten lesbian and gay filmmakers for an on-location seminar on the set of the movie Conspiracy Theory.[29]
Although Gibson did not write the screenplay for Braveheart[30], the depiction of a homosexual character in the film drew accusations of homophobia.[31] Although historians agree that Prince (later King) Edward II of England was a mere puppet of Thomas of Lancaster, they dispute the portrayal of Edward as effeminate. Edward's father, also, never threw his lover out of a window as portrayed in the movie.
Gibson was accused of homophobia once more in his movies with his portrayal of Herod Antipas in The Passion of the Christ. Antipas is portrayed as an effeminate homosexual wearing makeup and having 'boy-toys'. The character was similar portrayal of the same character in the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar. Although this was a common caricature of Herod in medieval Passion plays, it is contrary to the historical record regarding Antipas. It is of note that the Greek text has Christ describing Herod as a "vixen", or female fox, rather than "fox" in the Gospel.[32][33][34]
Actually just because you never heard of it doesn't mean others haven't.

Exactly.
If Blkout had bothered to read the last link, you'd find out that this was news in 1995. Mel's history of being homophobic is documented.
And I'm sorry if the people who viewed the movie knew nothing about history nor were gay. Doesn't make them right.
I'll buy Gladiator just to hear the amazing soundtrack in Dolby Tru HD.
Me too! I thought this was Hans Zimmer's best work to date. The soundtrack to Braveheart is also amazing. I'm a sucker for that big hollywood epic sound. Definitely 2 titles that I will pick up on just for the soundtrack alone.
"...then you must let them know treachery will not go unpunished"
or something close to that. No chick flick here.
Speaking of Dreamworks, anybody got the inside scoop? Have a link to share?
jacksonian 09-07-06, 04:42 PM I'm eagerly awaiting Gladiator. Easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Soundtrack is fabulous, cinematography was awesome, the story was killer, and it's the only movie I've ever liked Russel Crowe in.
Braveheart just didn't do it for me.

Gladiator is my most wanted HD-DVD next to LOTR.
Methinks that's a reasonable request. Watching ROTK last night had me wishing too. The SD transfer is excellent. Imagine HDDVD? Yum.
I'm kind of surprised studios arent' throwing out there triple A titles to get there format of choice to win. There are just some titles that will sell a format. This is one of them.
Gladiator, Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan with Dolby True HD would be fantastic!

I too wonder the same thought. Box office, and DVD sales/rental receipts should be all that's needed.
I demand the extended version of Gladiator!
Much better movie.
Bring on Braveheart, awesome battle action.
Actually the part where the King tosses his son's boyfriend out of the castle was one of my favorite scenes.

Here in the UK it was distributed by Universal on DVD so there is a good chance that if we beg enough they may get fed up and listen.
WiFi-Spy 02-28-07, 06:23 AM This is going to be amazing the day it comes out in HD.
A truly Reference HD version of Gladiator was broadcast on BEV satellite in canada like 3-4 years ago.
When this does come out on HD DVD or Blu-ray, it will knock everyones socks off.
Gladiator is the best looking SD+upconverted title I have, it really holds up well upscaled, at least the original transfer, the one with the Ridley Scott sig on the front, not sure if the disc that came out later (doesn't have his sig on the box cover) is the same transfer, read several times that its not as good, etc, newayz....an hd version of this will OWN! =)

Dolby TrueHD without any pitcherror.

vurbano 02-28-07, 11:58 AM I have been waiting for Gladiator as well. It should have been released last year IMO.
Seriously, Gladiator is probably one of the best selling DVDs of all time. It's an academy award winner, and should be a reference title for HD DVD. Honestly, it should have been a LAUNCH title for HD DVD.
eq_shadimar 02-28-07, 12:11 PM Loved Gladiator and I would love to see it in HD!! Braveheart meeh not so much. I don't know why, I just never "got" that movie. I don't own it on SD.

To bad this is on FOX. I'd love an HDDVD copy.
jediopopz 02-28-07, 01:48 PM Gladiator and Braveheart are both beautiful in HD. The beginning battle of Gladiator is a fabulous way of showing off an HD system. I can't wait to get the uncompressed HD-DVD (or Blu-Ray) versions someday. Sadly, today I was thinking of how bad i want to see the Kingdom of Heaven Extended Edition today. I can't though, because I don't have Blu-Ray and also don't want to break my rule of no more SD movies watched. Haha.
UxiSXRD 02-28-07, 02:04 PM Kingdom of Heaven DC is an incredible HD title so I definitely recommend the Blu-ray should you ever go that way.
On the same vein, I definitely want to see the Battle of Stirling in HD on either format. The soundtrack would be great in lossless, as well. Hopefully we could get the extended cut, as well.
Rockford Punch 02-28-07, 02:30 PM Bring on Braveheart dang it. I've been waiting for that one. Even though such a long movie, I've seen it tons of times. Definitely one of my favorite movies all time.

He made Crowe look like an extra in that movie, and yet Crowe gets the Statue
And he REALLY got robbed in Walk the Line. I blame him not winning that due to Jamie Foxx, who didn't deserve the award.

They robbed Denzel Washington for Kevin Spacey. Denzel deserved it for The Hurricane over Kevin Spacey and American Beauty. I always felt Kevin Spacey's best acting was acting as if he deserved the oscar over Denzel Washington as he accepted the award.

Yeah...but Denzel stole it from Crowe.....Training day.....vs. A beautiful mind..
Crowe most definitely got robbed on that puppy...he was freaking brilliant!

Wow....just goes to show how different each of our perceptions of the same event differs.
For me, Jaoquin's character made the movie.
A hero can only be as good as the villian is bad. If you liked Crowe's character then you have to respect the villian that made him. I felt both matched each other perfectly. Without Jaoquin's performance, that movie wouldn't have worked for me.
Is is possible he did his job so well that something about the character disturbed and repulsed you leading to your dislike for the performance itself?
Jaoquin's performance was truly Oscar worthy (I also think Connie Nelson did a brilliant job with the sister character and thank the gods for Oliver Reed's casting as Proximo). For me, this was one of those once-in-a-lifetime performances where the actor and the role were made for each other (like Lawrence of Arabia for O'Toole). Amazing that he made lightening strike again in Walk the Line. Please do it again, Jaoquin.

No disrespect, but are you puffin on a little something? If you watch the movie closely, he is what makes the movie, just like Jody said. His whiney and hater attitude made the ending all the better. That is when I knew that guy was going to be a star.
jacksonian 04-15-07, 02:01 PM Have to agree that Joaquin was fabulous in that role. Easily deserved best supporting actor.
Yep, Crowe and the rest were great, but Jaoquin steals the show. Some of his best moments were how perfectly creepy he was during the scenes when his character was alone with his sister. He makes this movie the classic it is IMO.

Sorry I disagree. Thought his accent sucked.
Just give me a world class transfer, I'll give out the awards later...after my 75th viewing.
(Why is it some movies you never tire rewatching it over and over again?)

You must have been watching another movie ;)

First the homophobic rant and now this? That's 2 strikes in one thread. :D
gmoney80 04-17-07, 12:56 PM a good bad guy is one that makes you hate him during the film and joaquin totally nailed it he was amazing in gladiator. His scene with richard harris right before he kills him is some of the best acting ive seen, can't wait to own on hd-dvd
beagle five 04-17-07, 02:39 PM There is a great Gladiator fight scene clip (1080p) in the editing documentary included with the HD-DVD movie Bullitt. That documentary is almost worth the price of the disk itself.
Plus Matrix Reloaded , Star Wars EpII, and many many more HD clips!
that is great news! I have bullit on the way, will have it on friday hopefully!
Sorry I disagree. Thought his accent sucked.
wait... his accent? how can someone dislike an accent for a movie that takes place exclusively in another country in ancient times yet they speak English.
I mean I'm all for hating on actors with horrible British accents. But hating on an actor for a decent Italian accent on a character he's playing as an emperor in ancient Rome who speaks English seems like a stretch.
In similar fashion I don't hate on bad German accents in Nazi movies when they speak English as well.
But seeing how much you like to argue a point (as in the Dog Day Afternoon thread), I'll just drop it now.
jiggawhat 04-17-07, 04:01 PM This should keyword being "should" be coming in Fall 2007 to both formats.
SirDrexl 04-17-07, 04:08 PM Thanks Jiggawhat. :)
