Just finished watching Seabiscuit and I have to say it is an absolute beautiful & amazing transfer. I had forgotten the beautiful cinematography this film had. It has that WOW factor that you all wanna see in HD titles. Colors so vibrant and landscapes so clear and detailed. Picture quality had so much depth and maintained it throughout its entire running time. This is definitely a tier 1 transfer folks. The 5.1 DD Plus sound mix was right on target as well. Tons of extras too. I think alot of people are gonna be impressed with this one. Who knew?

Off to watch Red Dragon now!!!

BB put them out early. Some guys have seen all the titles slated for the 12th out. I'm not the only one who has gotten this title early. Troy and Red Dragon have been reviewed already also. It was a lil work though but luckily I have 4 Best Buys all within 15 minutes of where I live.

I saw it yesterday and on my set up it is reference quality. Both the audio and video were nothing short of spectacular. I've invited my neighbors to check it out today :)

Awesome to hear. I remember the ABC HD broadcast looked great as well.

A Best Buy near me had all the Universal releases out early yesterday. I picked them all up. They didn't have Troy out yet though. :(

Not surprising the transfer is of reference quality. The sd dvd was a top five for reference picture as well.

As for the poster who didn't like the movie, why? I thought the story was just incredible and inspiring.

Glad to hear Seabiscuit looks great. This is a good movie, and one that I will be more than willing to buy on HD-DVD to replace my SD DVD version.

Good, I'll buy it now. I now wait to read you guy's reviews of the discs before I buy them now. I only want the ones now with stellar PQ. :)

I watched this last night. This disc produced possibly the nicest picture I've ever seen on my display. Amazing colors, pure black levels, very filmlike. This was a Netflix rental, but I'm going to have eventually purchase this movie. It just looks gorgeous.

I completely agree with you Larry! This is the best HD-DVD that I have seen so far, and one of the best images I have ever seen on my system (with I, Robot on D-Theater being the best).

Unfortunately, I don't have D-Theater, but I was impressed with a cable HD showing of I, ROBOT. Even on Comcast, it looked great!

I keep wanting to update my display, but the black levels in CRT on SEABISCUIT were just amazing. I don't know if I could trade my low tech Panny for one of those newfangled LCD or DLP sets. Even though it's a bulky hulk, that CRT set really made SEABISCUIT look exceptional.

I rented this from Netflix and watched it even though I have the SD version. Beautiful film, beautiful transfer. I was extremely impressed by the PQ.

On the tier system, I suggested Seabiscuit be put ABOVE Chronicles of Riddick. I believe it has the best PQ of any "tier 1" movie. Yes, I have watched Scorpion King, Chronicles of Riddick and Seabiscuit more than once and each time I feel Seabiscuit is better than those two in terms of PQ. It is also the highest ranked "non CGI" movie currently available on HD DVD (all of tier 0 are CGI movies)-- closely followed by One Six Right -- a documentary on the Van Nuys Airport. Those are two beautiful HD DVDs.

This title is still WAY up there for me. It just doesn't get much better than this.

This will be one of the first titles that I watch when I get my new projector (JVC RS1).

I'll be very interested to hear how HD DVD looks on the RS1. That is on my list as a possible replacement for my Sony HS51 projector. I have this year marked as upgrading to a 1080P projector and the JVC RS1 is getting some really good pre-release press. I'm waiting to hear how it "actually" performs and if it'll be worth upgrading from an HS51. So, I hope you post some impressions when you get yours.

I will definitely be posting my impressions. There are so many people on the pre-order for the RS1 that I can assure you that there will be no shortage of reviews! The projector forum is going to be overrun with nothing but RS1 reviews for a couple months.

Yep. But...where's the increased resolution?

Most of my HD collection is a double dip of SD DVDs already in my collection.
I'm in the habit of comparing the two. Unlike movies like Batman Begins, where there is a notable image improvement over SD, this one seems rather lackluster.

Now, before anyone flames me, could you run both formats and post your real world conclusions?

Maybe, in the end, this is testimony to how good a SD transfer can be.

thanks. My hat is tipped to any member taking the challenge.

I'm sorry, but there is no comparison between the HD-DVD version of Seabiscuit and the SD version. Not even close in terms of both color and resolution, not to mention other areas such as contrast and lack of any artifacts in the HD verison.

There's an entire thread that shows pictures comparing both versions, sd and hd-dvd of seabiscuit. Try searching for seabiscuit in the threat title in this forum and you should find it. The difference is night and day. I really don't know what you mean by increased resolution. Color is resolution. The more pixels you can use to define a color, the more accurate the color is reproduced. The colors in the images in seabiscuit are exquisite.

I guess the testimony of the majority of AVS members is not good enough?

Really? Wow. I find just the opposite on my Sony HS51 projector on an 8 foot screen. Batman Begins is a good improvement, but it isn't even in the same league as Seabiscuit. The visuals in Seasbiscuit are stunning -- like looking out a window. I found a pretty dramatic iimprovement over the SD counterpart.

I admit, however, that display type and environment play a role in how well a movie looks. I still list Seabiscuit as the best movie in Tier 1 -- in a tie, really, with Scorpion King. Chronicles of Riddick is just a hair below. Taking into account story and characterization, it's a full "head" in front of the others.

I went to my nearest Fry's and bought a copy of "Seabiscuit" today and watched it tonight. Wow! What a great movie! The cinematography and sharp images just popped off my screen! Definitely up there with "Batman Begins," "King Kong," and "V for Vendetta."

My eyeballs vs your eyeballs. Tonight, I'm going to do it (test) all over again, via component and HDMI on my DT-500 at 106 inches.
Just last night I did the same with POTO and the differences were clearly in favor of HD, as was BB just a few nights ago.

I feel better now. My New DT-500 really helped bring out the differences. Now, I can't help but wonder just what impact a 1080p PJ will have. Some scenes are truly Tier 1 and the colors are top shelf. My rant is over now. Disc earns keeper status.

Ok, I finally watched this in its entirety on my Panasonic PT-AE1000U on my 100" Carada BW screen and it was BEAUTIFUL! One of the most film-like images I've seen yet on HD DVD. This is what I'm talking about! Makes me never want to walk into another commercial theater again!

Oh yeah, it's one of the best HD DVD's out there. Some may be sharper, but it has that classic, old fashioned, beautiful film look to it. No noticeable "effects", and with all the great locations and color schemes, it just makes it really pop.

I thought the same thing. I really enjoyed the movie because it was pretty accurate and true! I have seen and bought many HD DVD's, but I have probably sold half of them on eBay because I wouldn't watch the movie again. I would watch Seabiscuit again.

One of my favorite movies on HD DVD and the PQ is great. I have the 2 disc collectors set on DVD and was pleased that many if not all the features of that set (except for the booklets and such) were included on the HD DVD version.
