View Full Version : Blu-Ray Mega Player?? chris03053 09-12-06, 08:51 PM What do you think? Will Sony make a Blu-Ray 400 Mega player like the 995v? Poolrad 09-12-06, 08:59 PM I'll be interested to see if Sony makes any Blu-Ray player at this rate ;) BillP 09-12-06, 09:21 PM What do you think? Will Sony make a Blu-Ray 400 Mega player like the 995v? There aren't 400 BD discs available. camaj 09-12-06, 09:37 PM There aren't 400 BD discs available. Presumably there will be at one point. Not sure why you'd want a player that holds 400 discs unless you're extreamly lazy. rlsmith 09-12-06, 09:47 PM Well, it will play DVD's too (and probably CD's by then). I can't figure out why people like these but I know several people who load up all of their disks and then just push a button to see something. Personally, I enjoy handling the boxes! My guess is they will be made when the format is a success downstream. amirm 09-12-06, 11:00 PM We are hoping that with managed copy, you won't need these mechanical nightmares. Just rip the darn things to hard disk and be done with it. And have much faster access and home streaming to boot.... RobertR1 09-12-06, 11:44 PM Amir, At even a given avg of 25GB. That's a lot of space. Take into account ripping speeds, playback capabitlies of the HTPC, driver compatiablity, Internet stream muxing from the IME side that we're told will come and we're talking about quite a lot of "if's" In theory, everything sounds great, even BD200 discs :) but I'd like to see Managed Copy in action and stable before cheering it on. So far, the specs are not even finalized and no eta, correct? amirm 09-12-06, 11:52 PM Amir, At even a given avg of 25GB. That's a lot of space. ... So far, the specs are not even finalized and no eta, correct? Well, you don't have to rip everything. You can just pull off the movie which assuming VC-1 codec (:)) is probably in the 15 to 20 gigabyte range. If it is MPEG-2, then you are on you own :). With advanced tools in the future, you may also be able to strip out the IME, unneeded audio tracks, etc. and get the size even lower. Then there is the thing about which movies you really want to watch again. You wouldn't rip the losers. As to specs, they are finalized it is the license agreement that is dragging on and on... But yes, we are talking futures. But same is true of disc changers as they are not there right now either. RobertR1 09-13-06, 12:06 AM Well, you don't have to rip everything. Never said the disc changers were a good idea :) For managed copy to be a great idea for steaming around the house, it'd be ideal if you could have a decoder box either built into each TV set (new spec and highly unlikely) that could accept signal via ethernet/wireless or a STB. So basically your PC acts as a broadcast hub streaming the content straight to any set or stb which can display the picture. Ofcourse the PC would also be able to do the same to receivers for those choosing to go that route. Another good aspect of centralizing this is using your PC as a DVR and then having it stream that content out to the various sets. The PC would also broadcast the Cable guide and so forth. So, Vista SP1 for all that right? :P amirm 09-13-06, 12:24 AM That is indeed coming. At last CES, Pioneer showed Plasma displays streaming content from Media Center PC with all the logic built-in. While this profile is not compatible yet with what comes from HD DVD/BD, it could in the future as the decoder used is what is some HD players. Once there, you can indeed stream everything from TV programming to digital downloads and HD optical rips. As to sp1, that is fair :). This is going to take a while to get done and work well. Maxx_75 09-13-06, 12:29 AM I hope that Media Center acually works at some point. My first and only experience with it was with Vista Beta 2 with my 360 and it doesnt work right at all. I am preparing to install RC-1 and debating if I want to set up the MC again. I want it to work but it just seems SO bulky of a solution when the Media Center for the original Xbox is almost perfect. MS should hire thouse guys to make it acually work. RobertR1 09-13-06, 02:08 AM That is indeed coming. Thanks for your correspondence on this. Much appreciated :) We all know what's coming after HDDVD/BD. It'd be great to have the home infratstructe established well before to make the adoption of streaming content transparent. Keep pushing for it!!! dr1394 09-13-06, 06:13 AM Apparently, these already exist in some form. JVC showed a 600 disk Blu-ray "juke-box" at IBC. I own approx. 650 dvds and have them hooked up to an Escient Fireball system which makes life very easy as it catalogs the dvds and gives me a on screen display showcasing each movie by genre, title, date, cover art etc. You simply hit guide and navigate to the movie you would like to watch. Hit info to read about the movie (description, actors, etc.) or simply hit enter and have the movie load up and start playing. Who wants to handle 650 dvd cases or better yet, who wants to dedicate that much physical storage space? My cases used to fill 3 large Ikea bookshelf units, now all my cases sit in a box in a closet. I for one hope that a blu-ray juke box does get released as I loathe the idea of storing physical media again. chris03053 09-13-06, 06:11 PM Agree. I love them too.:) I have mine going threw my CII video processor and they have been working great(knock on wood) :)I actually have 2 Sony ES 400 disc dvd changers and think that they serve their purpose well. It currently cannot decode HD DVD/BD media, however it can be updated over the internet to include this capability. Brad H 09-15-06, 04:38 AM Love my 995v. I throw everything in there: dvd's, cd's, SACD's, DVD-A's. Makes organizing everything NICE! Now if they come out with a mega changer that can play all those formats plus BR, then I'll be all over that! nrk7001 04-15-07, 03:26 PM Anyone hear any news on this lately? blackssr 04-19-07, 06:08 PM What do you think? Will Sony make a Blu-Ray 400 Mega player like the 995v? I wish someone would make a Combo Mega Player with the Silicon Optics Reon Scaler for SD DVDs. This would end the war immediately. bullgates 04-22-07, 01:30 PM I talked with our Sony rep a few days ago and he hasn't heard of anything like this in the works. Obviously if Blu can put out more titles and starts gaining more headway than I'm sure it's in the cards. |
