vfxproducer 10-06-06, 01:18 PM I worked on a show a few years ago with a similar gag- getting the hand damaged in a disposal (although without the magical healing powers). The producers had the good sense to have my visual effects crew paint out the in-sink-erator logo on the disposal specifically to avoid such a law suit. The legal department of NBC should have caught that ahead of time. Painting out the logo would have cost them less than their lawyers will cost writing the response letter. Stupid mistake.
When my wife and I saw the "In-sink-erator" logo, we just assumed it was another product placement plug we've been seeing so much of the last few years.
trbarry 10-06-06, 02:12 PM To me the law seems fairly silly on this. If manufacturers insist on printing an easily visible logo on commonplace household items it does not seem anyone should have to get their legal permission to have them show up incidentally in a movie.
I just checked and it seems I also have an In-Sink-Erator. I have little doubt that if I put my hand in it while it was running I could manage to do some substantial damage, though maybe not as rapidly as in the show. Is In-Sink-Erator trying to say it is really safe or is it really true you can't have anybody's logo visible anywhere on a TV show?
Too many laws and lawyers makes for an inefficient society. :(

JimsArcade 10-06-06, 02:33 PM When they edit this for rebroadcast and for the inevitable DVDs, I hope they only digitally eliminate the brand name. If they were to cut the scene entirely that would be asinine.
Oh, and Emerson can forget ever getting my business if they're wasting money on frivolous lawsuits like this. I can understand wanting permission to use their trademarks... but to sue on the grounds that putting a hand in a running garbage disposal causing serious injury (common sense) looks bad on the manufacturer? Idiotic! What is a garbage disposal designed to do: kindly ask foodstuffs to break apart so they can pass through the drainage system?
If anything, the scene demonstrates just how effective their garbage disposal really is.
trekguy 10-06-06, 02:41 PM That woman spilled hot coffee on her own lap because the coffee was scalding hot and burned her hand right through the flimsy paper cup that was handed to her. That case is often erroneously cited as an example of a frivolous lawsuit by people who don't know the facts behind it, but McDonalds very much deserved to lose that suit. As a result of it, they started using thicker cups and brewing their coffee at a temperature actually consumable by real human beings, both things that greatly benefited their customers.
The victim placed the cup of hot coffee between her thighs while driving her car. The coffee temperature was about what is generally recommended for brewing decent coffee (and for ensuring that the patrons did not have tepid coffee before they could consume it).
This case is in fact an example of making a business responsible for foolish use of their products, and richly rewarding those who fail to exercise even minimal care. I'm sure that many jury awards are warranted, but clearly many are not. Sears employee injured when tire explodes when he mounts and inflates it. Jury finds Sears responsible. Employee however had disobeyed requirement to use safety cage. Man walks in front of a freight train on a straight track in daylight, ignores warning signs and crossing lights and bells. Family sues railroad. Suit thrown out not because man was stupid but because railroad by statute was essentially immune.
archiguy 10-06-06, 02:45 PM If anything, the scene demonstrates just how efective their garbage disposal really is.
Really! They should be happy for the additional exposure and be paying NBC a product-placement fee instead of suing them. The whole thing is ridiculous...
nuttyinnyc 10-06-06, 02:49 PM Come on people you are steering off topic. It is NBC's fault they were showing a consumer based item in bad light despite good or bad judgement. NBC should know better. The logo should have been airbrushed out. Now the have to take out or rework a sceen there. Let's get back to the show on hand. Ha ha ha ha ha!

Agreed - time to get Sorkin and other affiliated NBC writers, maybe even an industry wide effort to write in some comments into their shows. Something like "gotta run to the hardware store to replace this garbage disposal that keeps breaking down" then the spouse says: "Get a Maytag or Viking, don't get the same crappy brand."
Get McDreamy, McSteamy or one of the Desperate Housewives to say that, and it's game over. ;)
trbarry 10-06-06, 04:33 PM Heck, I wonder if this WAS a product placement, with the law suit just for publicity. Let's keep watch for others.
And the scene was really just a rip of the Dead Like Me scene where she did the same thing with a shredder. Had to stick one finger back on to flip off the other girl in that show. But I don't recollect the brand of the shredder. Wonder if it showed?

Anyone else think that they're overdoing it a little with the Cheerleader's injuries? I mean why DID her hand get all mangled from the garbage disposal? Cut up, maybe. Why did her head spin around backwards when she got hit by the football player? A little cheesy and over the top, in my opinion.I've never stuck my hand into a running garbage disposal, so there's no way to know the extent of bodily damage without actually trying (and I have no plans to do so). Nonetheless, the effect was quite convincing to me.

As much as I'd like to agree with your sentiment (frivolous lawsuits files in this country by a far too litigious society of "get rich quick" schemers) - that really wasn't the case here and your facts are incorrect. For one thing, the lady was a passenger and NOT the driver. There was additional research showing McD's knew the temp was higher than used normally (whether this was "better" coffee is irrelevant, it was dangerous) and other facts that didn't make it into public notice. At first, I felt as you did about this incident. But, review of the real facts shows otherwise. Reducing the temp by 20 degrees as other coffee makers do would not result in "tepid" coffee. It would reduce the temp from about 180 degrees to 160. Still plenty hot.

This upisode of the the more you know was brought to you by NBCLOL. For a minute there, I thought that was supposed to be an American Pie quote.
Not to get sidetracked but that MCD and old lady is an argument some use but if they do look at the case the woman was in her right. The cup mfg stated the hot cup was not designed for the temp that MCD had the coffee. Pure and simple.
The victim placed the cup of hot coffee between her thighs while driving her car. The coffee temperature was about what is generally recommended for brewing decent coffee
That lawsuit (and the finding against McDonald's) was completely idiotic.
But McDonalds coffee back then was always about 1 BTU away from flasing completely to steam. :)
I used to order it with 1/4 of the cup filled with ice, so I didn't have to drive 100 miles before I could start drinking it.
It's not as hot today, but it still requires a bit of cooling before taking a drink.
Still, I'd rather have it piping hot, than lukewarm and nasty...

*except if the speech involves improper use of garbage disposals. Also, car crashes shall only be allowed to be shown if it is impossible to identify the make of the car.
It says it right there: "Congress shall make no law..."
There's nothing in the Constitution allowing potentially-libelous use of a Registered Trademark. Not even the "fair use" provisions.

nuttyinnyc 10-08-06, 10:44 PM OK people enough mcdonalds. You are making me hungry, Focus people focus. Less than 23 hrs to show time and
Where our superheros left off: don don don Hiro back in Japan knowing that NY will go boom Nov 8(sweeps period) Daddy sneeky, was able to go to the school and steal a tape from a kid(nerdy at that ) from a back pack that would always be on his shoulder. Was that the artist dead? Cop being arrested for making detectives look bad. How are they all goning to meet in one month before boom? These and more burning questions will be answered in the next episode of SOAP. Sorry showing my age, I mean HEROES
huberjgl 10-09-06, 03:21 PM Was that the artist dead?
Yes, but that was also in the future that Hiro visited, so he ain't dead yet.
Just wishes he was.

I know that was the future I just didn't get to see if that was him.
5 hrs left.
VideoJames 10-09-06, 08:37 PM ...Cop being arrested for making detectives look bad....
I thought the female detective arrested the telepathic cop because she thought he had something to do with the crime. Not only can't she understand how he found the little girl, but she was surprised he knew the name Sylar. So she suspects that he could be involved in the crime.

yeah that was the reason but he knew to much and he waltz into their crime scene and found the girl, he made them look bad. She will get it later that he can read minds. She has no proof to arrest him. He will be let go at the station. Just my opinion. We will see what happens in 20 min.
Ou8thisSN 10-09-06, 09:28 PM what is wrong with the sound tonight? its all tiny and metallic sounding, but fine on the SD channel? local or national issue?
jdoggxperience 10-09-06, 09:37 PM Unfortunately national, if you're in TN. I'm in Mass, OTA.
cavalierlwt 10-09-06, 10:03 PM I had the same problem with the sound, tinny, kinda sounded like an echo.
PCMusicGuy 10-09-06, 10:03 PM The sound is just fine here in Houston on TWC but the picture gets quite pixelated at times. I just finished watching tonight's episode and I must say this has to be one of the best shows on tv right now. I hope this last for a few more seasons.
dontdothat88 10-09-06, 10:07 PM man that japanese guy needs to win a emmy or grammy or whatever the he77 they give out, that guy is hilarious.
cavalierlwt 10-09-06, 10:14 PM I recorded the show to my computer via firewire, just got done checking it out. The sound is only 2 channel, not 5.1, which is a little weird. For the people who had normal sound, could you tell for sure if it was 5.1?
Assayer 10-09-06, 10:37 PM My OTA feed was 2 channel only as well. I spent the first three commercial breaks trying to figure out whether my receiver had a hosed up setting. I suspect they took a 5.1 audio feed and stripped out all but the front left and front right channels, but didn't mix in the other content; The voices would have sounded funny without the center channel info.
Rather than spend 5 minutes with each character, I wish they would zero in on a couple characters per episode. Although still enjoyable, this style is too fragmented.
martin3 10-09-06, 10:55 PM The sound is just fine here in Houston
Not for me, sounded overly high pitched.
I think Dope-Dude will become an evil-mutant. Especially after his latest discovered drawings.
rebkell 10-09-06, 11:27 PM Claire was looking a bit piqued at the end of the show :)
I love previews, but sometimes they show too much in the previews, they shouldn't have shown Claire in the previews for next week's show.
talbain 10-09-06, 11:50 PM this episode was still great, but they didn't really advance the story much this time out. and who was that mystery girl at the bonfire? yikes if they introduce yet another character i'm going to scream...
Adelphia cable here in Boynton Beach, FL. The sound was attrocious, and as others described, it was as if the 5.1ch mix was messed up with the front channels de-emphasized in favor of the center channel and no surrounds at all. Someone in charge of telecasting this show should get sitcanned !! This is the second time they screwed up this show in four weeks !!
Anyway, the episode was very good, and is giving us an early indication of who might end up on which side of the good or evil fence.
man that japanese guy needs to win a emmy or grammy or whatever the he77 they give out, that guy is hilarious.
Amen. I'm so glad he's gone back in time and is bringing his buddy along. There's like the Japanese Bing Crosby and Bob Hope lol....Road To Nyuuu Yooku.
I think Dope-Dude will become an evil-mutant. Especially after his latest discovered drawings.
Yeah. Interesting how he THINKS the Heroin is what gives him his ability. We touched on this earlier, I wonder if it's true? Odd message for a big 3 network to send out: Do Heroin, See The Future! :-)
Ok, So how creepy was it with Buffy waking up on the autopsy table?!?!
Ok, Neighbor girl definitely ratted out the doc so Sylar could move his things (or someone could).
The black guy in the bar was wearing a necklace with that funky symbol on it (the one that keeps showing up in drawings, patterns, DNA, etc)
So Sylar is apparently telepathic, telekinetic, invulnerable, and can fly. If he can stop time and teleport the Heroes are in serious trouble. I'm hoping Hiro is their wild card with the one ability Sylar lacks.
ziltomil 10-10-06, 12:16 AM I'm guessing sylar eats the brain or uses the brains of other people with power to gain more powers.
drsimnal 10-10-06, 12:18 AM Nice ending. I was expecting her to play dead until the jerk left, then "heal" or whatever and that would be it. The whole autopsy thing was great. I wonder what, if any, role her "dad" played in that, since we know he knows what she knows but hasn't told him.
This sylar guy totally freaks me out. Had to watch with the lights on and sound muted when they were in his apt. I'm just not into serial killers. That's why I don't watch CSI: Springfield. Still don't know if he's connected to the cheerleader's daddy. If not, they ought to go after him and spare me the rest of the eerie music.
I can't believe the Vegas chick hasn't put 2+2 together and figured out her baby daddy is the one who's in the ground. At least, I'm pretty sure.
ckenisell 10-10-06, 12:42 AM With all of the "people" being pretty bad, I wonder why the show is called "Heroes". :)
The guy that tried to rape Claire has been handing over evidence to her "father". There's no way her "father" would have known about the tape if they weren't communicating somehow.
Of course, her "father" could have powers too and is ashamed of being that way. Maybe that's why he needs to know more about it.
We may also have a "morpher" on our hands and not even know it. There could be one "character" playing many characters within the show. Kind of like Mystique from X-Men. This could be a twist later on.
I also really like the brothers storyline. Just when you think the Nathan is being a good brother, it has everything to do with manipulation for getting elected. Also, Peter may not be able to fly without is brother there. This is evident by his failing to fly from the monkey bars.
The sound was bad here in Denver, too. But no video problems.
The funky symbol was also on the cover of Dr. Suresh's book, so it most likely is a portion of DNA strand, as someone mentioned earlier.
I'm hoping the girl at the bonfire is just the QB's ex or something - not another Hero. But they've done a good job introducing new characters, so it may not be so bad if she's got powers.
Why does Sylar want the little girl? Couldn't he find her earlier? Maybe he's not telepathic.
It's way too early to tell if this will last, but there are several things I like better than Lost - not the least of which is that the characters aren't afraid to share information.
I'm curious where people think this is going. Is Sylar going to be the anti-hero (the Magneto) who organizes the baddies? Is Claire's dad Sylar, or just someone else (government) trying to control all of the Heroes? Is the NYC explosion the season climax, or a story line that brings some (or all) of the heroes together and is resolved in a few weeks (theoretically, by November 8 if they stick to the timeline)? I can wait for the real answers, of course, as long as they give us some of them before the end of the season.
I can't believe the Vegas chick hasn't put 2+2 together and figured out her baby daddy is the one who's in the ground. At least, I'm pretty sure. Why would it be him? Didn't she say that DL (?) killed all of his crew? And if it is DL, how would Niki have known where to find him after he escaped from prison? OK - don't answer that last question. But at least I don't think she put him there, since none of the heroes really seemed to have powers until the eclipse. Except for maybe the politician.
ckenisell 10-10-06, 12:54 AM The point is that maybe her bad side killed him and her good side didn't know it.
ckenisell 10-10-06, 12:58 AM I'm sure the explosion is a MAJOR plot point that won't get resolved in just a few episodes. The main question I would like answered is: Will the explosion plot point climax at the end of this season or will it run throughout the entire SERIES? I certainly hope it's just the season and doesn't boil over into season 2.
Also, that DNA strand logo sure is getting crammed down our throats. It's on books, on necklaces, in paintings, in swimming pools, in code, etc. I'm just hoping we're not in some kind of Matrix.
drsimnal 10-10-06, 01:00 AM The point is that maybe her bad side killed him and her good side didn't know it.
Exactly. And she has nothing but bad things to say about him, and he seems to be MIA right now--no one close to him has seen him. Her "bad" side has done all kinds of things that she has no recollection of whatsoever. Maybe I'm wrong, but it was what I thought immediately.
drsimnal 10-10-06, 01:05 AM ... But at least I don't think she put him there, since none of the heroes really seemed to have powers until the eclipse. Except for maybe the politician.
Umm, I don't know if that's right. Claire and the filmboy seemed to have been working on her personal version of "Faces of Death" well before the eclipse. And Mr. Heroin has been painting for some time as well.
univibe88 10-10-06, 01:08 AM Unfortunately national, if you're in TN. I'm in Mass, OTA.
The sound was messed up on Comcast cable in the Boston area also.
Al Shing 10-10-06, 02:12 AM This ep was a little slow moving, compared to the previous eps. It's as if they suddenly realized they are going to be picked up for the full season, so they have to stretch out the material more now.
I wish they would use a different narrator. He sounds like the same one who did Surface, and makes the Heroes recap seem cheesy by association.
Tom Imp 10-10-06, 02:23 AM Sound was fine to me, but the PQ left a lot to be desired.
I see what you people mean by the sound now. What a screw up...
Sound messed up in L.A. as well. Picture looks great though.
GeneWildersHair 10-10-06, 02:54 AM Sound was really bad here in NorCal "Bay area*with Comcast. Alot of Echo, and could hardly understand the HD broadcast, but the SD was fine.

"Wonder Twins....flying power ON."

I have another thought. What if the politician brother (Nathan?) is actuall the one that can fly. Also, what if he has the abilities to levitate others. When the younger brother was levitating on the building roof, maybe that was the older brother doing that to him, to satisfy his younger brother. Now that the younger brother is trying to do it alone, he can't because Nathan was levitating him all along to make him 'think' he could fly.
talbain 10-10-06, 08:29 AM I wish they would use a different narrator. He sounds like the same one who did Surface, and makes the Heroes recap seem cheesy by association.
i thought the narrator is the mohinder character. at least i'm pretty sure its him
spike jones 10-10-06, 08:38 AM that female detective reminds me of one of those hot stewardess chicks in the Fifth element.
nashvillecat 10-10-06, 08:41 AM Great show!
Loved the autopsy ending!
Also, Peter may not be able to fly without is brother there. This is evident by his failing to fly from the monkey bars.
When they were talking after his attempt to fly, Nathan had stated that he knew he could fly which I would think means he's tried on his own before.
Being brothers is the only thing keeping me from thinking 'Dynamically Gay Duo'.
I'm growing tired of the cheerleader getting seriously hurt. She is the definition of an accident waiting to happen.
Instead of viewing the comic book that shows the future page by page, skip to the end! - I know plot spoiler

I think she's assuming that's what he did, based on the crew disappearing and him going AWOL. Now that she's discovering her creepy alter ego she may have to reevauate that position lol.
If that was a crew member, why only one body? And how does either of her personalities know where it was buried unless they were involved?

They just got the full season nod last week. They are not producing these things in 2 or 3 days. I am sure this episode was written and produced back in August at the latest.
trbarry 10-10-06, 10:14 AM I like the way things are developing here. And it's still my favorite new show of the season.
I'm guessing it will be even more interesting once the various characters start hooking up and comparing power notes, say with the likely rendevouz in Vegas next week.

Same here in Orlando. It sounded like the center channel was stuck inside a tin can.
archiguy 10-10-06, 10:42 AM Same here in Orlando. It sounded like the center channel was stuck inside a tin can.
We tried to watch (hear) it but the echo effect was so awful we eventually had to go to closed captioning in order to be able to follow the broadcast. A more casual viewer would simply have tuned out in frustration; who knows how many did?. But the really amazing thing is that it went on for the entire hour!! We tried the stereo track and it had the same problem as the DD5.1 track.
Wasn't anybody paying attention at NBC High Command last night??!
abricko 10-10-06, 10:51 AM he sound was horrible (sounded like funky wide stereo but when I turned on the receiver it sounded better but still was only stereo
I disagree with you on video... the video pixelated often and appeared to be a low bitrate. I watched this on OTA NBC 4 in LA
Sound messed up in L.A. as well. Picture looks great though.
The show is dragging butt... it needs to pick up the pace I'm losing interest. Lost seems to know how to pace things well and the show has better mystery/unique feel to it. Lost is exciting and interesting even on episodes where they give you very little information during an episode. I've recently re-watched the first few episodes of Lost again and I still find it good.
Maybe because we've all seen the X-Men movies and or read the comic books... it all just feels too familiar and like another clone show.
I'm still going to watch a few more episodes but so far i'm not expecting much. Maybe I'm the only one but I find the Japanese guy terribly annoying like a giggly school girl always yelling "I did it".
Anybody think the daddy dude is the black guy in the bar and he's working for the dark side?I thought about it, but what are the chances that two "Heroes" got married and had a kid? I guess the kid is really smart.
ENDContra 10-10-06, 11:03 AM WNCN in Raleigh via TWC dropped to SD for the last two blocks. HD was back up in time for Studio 60, but this is the second week in a row a good chunk of Heroes was in SD. Thankfully SD is letterboxed so the zoom function works very well, but this is starting to get annoying. No one else had this problem Im guessing since no ones complained about it?...I just want to verify this is a local issue and not a network one.
nuttyinnyc 10-10-06, 11:03 AM Why couldn't you watch and listen in regular 2.0 TV speakers, Oh the horror!! That is an easy fix most most of the time when these 5.1 sound problems happen. That sound transfer problem for TV shows to receivers seems to happen a lot. Makes me a little gun shy about bringing a 5.1 system in my bedroom where I watch most of the primetime shows.
nuttyinnyc 10-10-06, 11:07 AM to answer your NBC question. I think NBC might be paying attention but they are getting the original feed, we get feeds that have been transferred, compressed, uncompressed, transferred again and so on. So the original feed sounded good leaving it has a long way to get to the consumer.
nuttyinnyc, I had the problems listening on my regular tv speakers, I didn't check if sounded even worse in 5.1, but it sounded bad in stereo. I think I will play around with the settings a little when I get home from work. My wife was watching in SD in the bedroom, so I finally gave up and went a watched with her. It sounded fine in SD, but that was on a mono TV.
Yeah that's right, I ended up watching the show in SD and mono on a 19" tv. Still enjoyed it.
Maybe I'm the only one but I find the Japanese guy terribly annoying like a giggly school girl always yelling "I did it".
Thankyou! I too was thinking I was the only one. He bugs me the most. I found the scene of the guy jumping from the playground and landing flat on his face to be the funniest. Reminded me a little bit of 'Greatest American Hero'.
(From Marc Berman’s Tuesday, October 10 , 2006, Programming Insider column at Mediaweek.com )
“…week three of Heroes (came in) at a solid 9.2/13 in the overnights (#2), 13.31 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 5.9/14 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m.. Heroes is not only the real deal, but NBC is already in the planning stages of a new version of The Bionic Woman next season.….”

abricko 10-10-06, 12:38 PM if you watch it back (on DVR) the opening (narration/recap) of the show sounded fine as soon as the show began you could almost hear the sound changing to that TIN sound... that's when I turned on the surround system and found it to be less annoying.
Steve Schauer 10-10-06, 12:39 PM I thought this episode was disappointing.
Most annoying was the police station scene. "We keep the little girl unguarded, alone in a basement room, so she'll be safer." The confrontation scene with Syler was intriguing, but wouldn't the two cops be kind of blown away by what they witnessed? Instead, telepathic cop comes home smiling because he had a really interesting day at work.
Then there is the cheerleader. I get it already. Her power is that she gets incredibly maimed several times a day. I'm waiting for a scene where she gets critically injured by a paper cut.
The scene with little brother and the artist's girlfriend (can't remember their names) was ridiculous. "OK, bye, I'm outta here, might see you again someday. Oh, BTW, I love you."
OTOH, I'm still hooked so far. The story is mysterious enough that I want to stick around to see it unfold some more. The scenes with Hiro are great - the over-satuated colors, the humor and energy levels, the stop action rescue in particular was way cool.
nikeykid 10-10-06, 12:48 PM I thought about it, but what are the chances that two "Heroes" got married and had a kid? I guess the kid is really smart.
that kid is gonna be REALLY evil.
dmbatch 10-10-06, 01:19 PM I thought this episode was disappointing.
There were guards. They were laying dead in the hallway when the two came in on Syler and the girl.
if you watch it back (on DVR) the opening (narration/recap) of the show sounded fine as soon as the show began you could almost hear the sound changing to that TIN sound... that's when I turned on the surround system and found it to be less annoying.
The recap was in Standard Def, wasn't it? Here in Boston, the episode started in SD for about 3 minutes and the audio was fine, albeit just stereo. After that the picture snapped into HD with distorted audio. The station switched back & forth between SD and HD a few times during the episode. It was really annoying.

I tend to agree. Being a decades-long comic book buff, I'm eager to see such "superhero" shows succeed on tv. I'm also intrigued by the mystery and the direction that the show is going. But the "good" stuff is undermined by the bad/weak stuff, and while the show tries to mimic Lost in some ways it doesn't feel nearly as hip, fresh, and unconventionally structured. I'm reminded of how a critic recently described another show by saying: "It's not HBO, it's NBC." I really want to love this show - and I do like it - but I wish it was even edgier and less conventional. It's like Lost if Lost was produced by the guys who did Barnaby Jones or some other formulaic 80's/90's series.
Steve Schauer 10-10-06, 01:40 PM It's like Lost if Lost was produced by the guys who did Barnaby Jones or some other formulaic 80's/90's series.
That's it. I want to love it, they're just making it difficult.
Great show!
Loved the autopsy ending!
That was great. "Holy sh!t" :p :D
Regarding the technical issues, NBC is simply the crappiest network when it comes to these things, how many times was the audio screwed up on "Surface" last year.?? This has been SOP for NBC for a long time, maybe someday that will care about their digital signal.
digiblur 10-10-06, 01:59 PM We tried to watch (hear) it but the echo effect was so awful we eventually had to go to closed captioning in order to be able to follow the broadcast. A more casual viewer would simply have tuned out in frustration; who knows how many did?. But the really amazing thing is that it went on for the entire hour!! We tried the stereo track and it had the same problem as the DD5.1 track.
Wasn't anybody paying attention at NBC High Command last night??!
Same here.. I watched it back on the HTPC and I thought something was wrong with my PC. I kept checking audio settings but I checked out a few other TS files and didn't have the echo. The echo on this episode made it very hard to follow, not matter what settings I tried.
Glad I wasn't the only one with this problem...
I think it has something to do with the NBC scheme for audio. Apparently it's different from how all the other networks send theirs. It's sent as three 2 channel streams and if any of the streams get out of sync you'll get that echoing effect. The real shame is that nobody at NBC seems to care, or even pay attention, to do anything about it when it happens.
Steve Schauer 10-10-06, 02:05 PM Great show!

Yeah, first time on network TV for live autopsy, man sliced in half, woman suspended by knives on a stair rail, and multiple post-debraining shots. :D

It would have been even funnier if the coroner was there when she woke up and said "Holy Sh!t" at the same time. :D
No audio problems and the video was always HD here in Seattle. Sorry you other guys, that is awful.
I am still suspending disbelief, and enjoying the show, but they stretched me a little thin this episode. I mean how many times can the cheerleader get killed in one day! I mean what is the average for a cheerleader?
I also thought it was ridiculous, they are keeping the little girl in the basement where the flourescent lights all flicker on and off, and next to the convenient underground tunnel with all the pipes.
Ok... That said, I am still enjoying the season, and I am glad they got the go ahead.
I am looking forward to them all getting together soon. Obviously Hiro and friend will be meeting Mirror Girl pretty soon in Vegas, and then hopefully the rest meet up soon after. I really like Hiro, he is funny and a breath of fresh air.
I'm guessing sylar eats the brain or uses the brains of other people with power to gain more powers.
I agree. Kind of Highlander, there can be only one!
So maybe Sylar's power is that he can eat the brains of others and absorb their powers. If so he is going to become very powerful very quickly.
Most of the maiming of the cheerleader has been self-inflicted. Only twice have we seen her accidently hurt.
sandiegojoe 10-10-06, 02:33 PM The cheerleader is a nice element to attract younger crowds to the show too (as if superheroes don't already attract kids)
My 16 year old cousin was going off about how HOT the cheerleader on the show was. Turns out she actually is a teenager, so I couldn't comment :D

But if the show can last a few seasons.... ;)
lrowland 10-10-06, 02:49 PM Has anyone noticed that we have not yet seen Syler's face? I'm not convinced Syler is male - despite the phone messages since the voice can be faked.
I have a sinking suscipion that the cheery little neighbor girl who bring Mac-n-cheese either is Syler or at least is working with him.
UTV2TiVo 10-10-06, 02:49 PM i thought the narrator is the mohinder character. at least i'm pretty sure its him
I think the son, Mohinder, did do some narration in the first episode but the poster was talking about the narrator of the 'previously on Heroes' part at the beginning of each episode. It's the same guy who did the intros to Surface in those cheesy hushed tones.
CPanther95 10-10-06, 03:03 PM This girl has been killed twice already (by others), and the bad guys aren't even after her yet.
Just watched this episode, so I didn't see the earlier comments - but add my name to the list (via WCNC OTA) of those with a severe echo - regardless of receiver setting.
UTV2TiVo 10-10-06, 03:10 PM This girl has been killed twice already (by others), and the bad guys aren't even after her yet.
She was killed by the Others? I think you are confusing this with another show... :D
hongcho 10-10-06, 03:11 PM The echo, which sounded like a bad mixing of stereo source to surround channels, was occasionally gone for a few seconds here and there. I don't think NBC guys aren't even monitoring their own shows...
Hong.
dmbatch 10-10-06, 03:16 PM Yeah, she's definitely jailbait
Wow, I just looked her up and she just turned 17. Probably still 16 when the first episodes were done. She was the voice of Dot in "A Bugs Life" at the age of ten.

drsimnal 10-10-06, 03:21 PM I didn't have any audio problems. Course, it was muted for the creepy parts.
Not to be picky, but the autopsy has me wondering. During an autopsy, the thoracic cage is sawed open at the sides and removed, then each major organ is taken out, weighed, sampled for slides and either tossed or put into preservative for further investigation later (if needed). So, did they just start hers and then everyone left (for an unknown reason), or is she missing parts? Can she grow organs back? She could be a goldmine for someone catering to rich people who are on transplant lists.
I'm on Time Warner in Maine and had no video or sound issues with this program. HD was excellent. Use tv speakers.
Steve Schauer 10-10-06, 03:46 PM She was killed by the Others? I think you are confusing this with another show... :D
Only 18,090 posts to go and we can catch the Lost thread. Let's roll!
huberjgl 10-10-06, 03:55 PM Nobody noticed that Hiro caused the accident when he "saved" the little schoolgirl?
The girl was already across the road, walking through the displays of toys when the truck was coming.
Hiro yelled at his buddy to stop the truck, buddy jumps out in front of the truck causing it to swerve into the displays of toys heading right at the schoolgirl.
If Hiro hadn't been there, the girl would have crossed safely, buddy wouldn't have caused the truck to swerve, truck would have stayed on the road, all would have been well.
Got me thinking that maybe he (or he with some help from the other "hero's" or "sylars") inadvertently causes the big explosion in New York, and maybe he'll catch on that he is causing things when he stops over in Las Vegas on the way to New York and uses his powers a couple times.

I knew I was getting old when the makeout (pre-attempted-rape) scene on the bleachers came on. In the past I would have been very interested in the cute girl getting kissed and felt up on the bleachers, but the first thing I thought of instead was my daughters, and how they would be that old soon :(
Scares the hell out of me.

No I didn't, but thanks for pointing it out, you are correct. The girl would not have been in danger if they had not been there.
Hmm, food for thought.

Yeah, I noticed it. The first thing I thought was that he was going to be responsible for her death. That's an old theme used on shows where people can see the future - they try to fix things and end up causing them. I was surprised when he stopped everything and saved her.
That's the first time we've seen what it's like from his point of view when he stops time. I assume when he ended up in the girls bathroom he just stopped time and wandered on in unnoticed.
Plasmacat 10-10-06, 04:51 PM My favorite part of the episode - Hiro insisting on a Nissan Versa at the rental counter. Guess what - I am a new (almost 3 months now) Nissan Versa owner - same color as mine too - Blue Onyx. I loves my Versa.
I had no trouble with pic or audio for OTA HD in the Bay Area. That was before things went all to hell for Studio 60 - no dialog (just surround), then postage stamp pic, then back to no dialog again. GEEZ.
OniKoroshi 10-10-06, 04:57 PM He teleported in the girls bathroom just like he teleported to new york. He didnt stop time and fly there. He has the ability to bend the space/time continuum. So he could stop time and/or teleport.

Wonder if, in this new age of marketing, they'll give an award for "most obvious product placement". I nominate this scene. :)
MJConnel 10-10-06, 05:34 PM Does anyone else think that the guy at the bar with the symbol necklace (Jimmy Jean-Louis as Mysterious Man) might be Sylar? He seemed to be masking his thoughts from the telepathic cop (Greg Grunberg as Matt Parkman) while staring straight at him.

I wondered the same. I watched the show tonight and was surprised that only MJ had commented on the scene. It's probably too obvious that the silent mind in the noisy bar with the (Sylar?) symbol necklace is Sylar or related to him, but this is TV, after all.
Audio: Sacramento OTA was fine. No echoes or other problems. I wonder if there were problems with the east coast feed that were corrected by the time of the west coast airing?
dave1216 10-11-06, 12:39 AM I like this show. Between this and Studio 60, it is refreshing to watch something different than the CSI show or one of it's ripoffs.

While what you said was true, there was also a bicyclist in the path of where the truck would have been, and it did not appear that he had swerved out of the way (he appeared to be crossing the street in the opposite direction of the girl - but I'll have to double check). So if Hiro didn't save the girl, he saved the cyclist. Or the director just made a mistake in the placement of this guy.
here in San Diego, CA on Cox the audio sounded like it was coming from a tunnel. Picture was HD all the way through. Quite a bit of macroblocking though, especially noticible in scenes with the cheerleader. And yes, we have the stupid NBC weather plus channel here.
Normally when the cheerleader chick gets killed, she comes back to life almost instantly. Why was she "dead" for so long this time? She came back right after they removed the "stake" from her head. Does she have an achilles' heel after all?

It's been established that her injuries won't heal until the foreign matter causing the injury is removed.
I think if she gets shot in the heart or head, or is decapitated, that will be it for her. Also, she is susceptible to Sylar cutting open her skull and pulling out her brain.
ckenisell 10-11-06, 10:07 AM Could there be any truth in my theory that Sylar is not a person, but a group of baddies? Something like the group of X-Men that hang out with Magneto?
DTVFanatic 10-11-06, 11:00 AM On the geography book the cheerleader took out of her locker, on the bottom edge of the pages she wrote GEOGRAPHY then the symbol.
On the airplane when Hiro showed the page of the lady sleeping on his buddy, it was drawn into Hiro's lips.
In Close Encounters, everyone had visions of the mountain/mesa where the craft landed and were obsessed with drawing or sculpting it. It appears the helix symbol is some how "burned" into their minds.
ckenisell 10-11-06, 12:08 PM I know one thing, they are really making that symbol obvious to viewers. How many times do they have to show it to us?
How many times do they have to show it to us?
Ya, it's getting old. Like as if they think we're too stupid not to pick up on it the first couple of times. Are they trying to show that everything is tied together? That should be obvious with good writing.
aviators99 10-11-06, 12:44 PM Both times by the same guy too I might add.
Good point. I do find it interesting that if she weren't superhuman she would have been killed twice in 2 episodes, and she wasn't doing anything that she wouldn't have been normally doing either time. I mean, it's not like she was taking any risks that a normal teenager wouldn't take.

I pretty much gotta chalk that up to "it's a TV show". The last one I can understand, because I'm sure they will do something with the storyline with everyone thinking the girl is dead, but with the football field accident, the writers probably felt they needed something superpowerish to happen during a slow moment or something. It's a bit silly, I mean we got the point that the girl is indestructable, but it's a fantasy show so I'll give them a pass.

• "Back There," in which a man travels back in time and attempts to stop Lincoln's assassination, unsuccessfully. In fact, he's the one to give John Wilkes Boothe the idea in the first place...
• "A Kind of Stopwatch," wherein we have a stopwatch that can stop time. But when the central character breaks it while time is stopped, he finds himself stuck in a frozen world. The Granddaddy of all time-stopping stories!

nuttyinnyc 10-11-06, 07:50 PM Question for all you thinkers out there. I didn't read it here which I am a little suprised of. You can never catch up to the "lost" Thread in postings if you don't look at every angle, HA HA!
TEENAGED girl can't hurt herself. When introduced to use she was on try #8 I think(Someone can clarify which one she was up to). But the question is. She found her powers out somehow. Do you think she was trying to commit suicide the first time she discovered her powers? Because she does play the part upset. Not a happy girl. She was going into extreme conditions hoping it wouldn't work. But now that she saved someone she felt good about herself. Just something I was thinking.
Al Shing 10-11-06, 08:01 PM She was on try #6 on the video.
I don't think a suicidal girl could be a cheerleader, since they are supposed to be cheerful, and popular. However, we have seen that Claire is somewhat accident prone, although that may be a by-product of her power. I can imagine thousands of ways she could discover that she has rapid regenerative powers without attempting suicide.
She is upset now because the powers make her a freak in her own eyes, and not worthy of her glorified status in high school.
Returning from the dead is going to be a bit hard to explain to her classmates.
trbarry 10-11-06, 08:25 PM She easily could have found her powers from something as simple as watching a paper cut heal.

That is true, but remember what all the cheerleader movies of the past have taught us. It is hard for them to look so happy each day, it takes a lot of work to be most popular and their is always someone that wants to take away your most popular status.
I really couldn't think of any natural way for her to discover her powers other then girls spend a lot of time in tubs and had a radio in the tub mishap or a curling iron short. But I am not a girl maybe a girl could think of other ways.
I like your thinking about her thinking she is a freak. She is talking to the "nerd" of the school which brings her down a notch and trust him with her most intimate secret. Knowing that her class, click, status quo, what ever you want to call it will not approach him for details of the friendship. If they approach him it is to give him a weggie, put pooh in his locker and ask him to do the science homework.

The guy sitting at the table in the bar is Sylar. Or maybe he is just the owner of the comic book company and likes to wear their logo around his neck.

Yes, but you got to remember like AL pointed out this is HS. Why would she go down a click to the "nerd" population to open up about it her powers and film it. Something simple like a papercut would be a friendship thing. Regular Girltalk. Something cool that happened once that she tells her friends. For her to jump school lines something major had to happen for her to find out her powers. Then she needed him, assuming he is good with science, or was on the AV squad and good with a camera to explain why this is happening to her.

The Twilight Zone was there first:
• "Back There," in which a man travels back in time and attempts to stop Lincoln's assassination, unsuccessfully. In fact, he's the one to give John Wilkes Boothe the idea in the first place...
~Dan
There was even an episode of the terrible UPN version of TZ like this, where a woman goes back in time and decides she must commit an act of infanticide on baby Hitler. She finally does it, killing herself in the process, but the nanny decides to buy a homeless ladies baby as a replacement rather than informing the parents that their real baby has been killed, and of course this homeless baby had the genetic disposition to be prone to genocidal leanings or something.
There's also the Terminator movies... in the first one a soldier from the future is sent back to protect a young lady so she will give birth to a future leader and hero, and he winds up fathering the said leader and hero. In the sequel it is revealed that the remains of the first terminator was used to develop the AI technology that eventually runs amuck, so in a sense, the first terminator goes back in time and "fathers" the technology that spawned it.
Also La Jetee/12 Monkeys... more so with La Jetee because it is the memory of witnessing a man's death and seeing the woman as a child that allows the character to travel back in time without losing his mind.
With time travel theory, there are only two paths of logic: One is that a timeline cannot be altered. These scenarios must follow that logic because it involves a person going back in time and setting the course of events that eventually leads to them going back in time. These timelines cannot be logically altered because changing them would change the course of events and they would not wind up going back in time and setting off the course of events that eventually causes them to go back in time in the first place. Did I say that right?
The other path of logic is the parallel universe theory. When someone goes back in time and alters a timeline, this creates a parallel timeline, or universe. These scenarios can’t occur because going back in time creates an alternate timeline which would not effect anything that happened in the timeline the traveler started from.
Okay, now I’ve confused myself.
Wait... Are you telling me that you all saw Heroes in HD on Monday night? Dammit!!! I knew my local affiliate or cable company screwed something up. I was hoping the rest of the country only got the SD feed as us in Hawaii. The whole primetime lineup was in SD on Monday. Damn I hate living here!

As for The Terminator, the future warrior guy definitely impregnated Sara and was the father of John Conner, there is no ambiguity about it. As for the TZ episode, I believe it implied in the monologue that this woman inadvertently created Hitler. I can't quite recall, but that seemed to be the episodes take on it, and if that was the case the implication would be if she hadn't killed the baby, that baby wouldn't have grown up to be the genocidal maniac we've all come to know. I don't agree with that, that's why I was being facetious with the "genetic disposition" remark. That UPN series was crap and an insult to the memory of Rod Serling, I doubt the writers of that episode put much thought into the "genetics vs. environment" question, they just wanted some hackneyed twist ending.
But back to the show we are talking about, Heroes, Hiro travels forward in time, gets the comic book, and comes back. When he saves the girl, he's trying to recreate what happens in the comic book. Therefore, it wouldn't have happened if he didn't have the comic book. I wonder if the comic book has him reading the comic book at any point. At any rate, this doesn't really apply to the situation I'm talking about, because if he changes what happens in the comic, it won't affect the fact that he seemingly went forward into a possible future and took the comic from that timeline. Also, he can change that possible future by bringing his friend with him, when seemingly he hadn't come with him in the timeline he visited. Yet, in the comic from that timeline, his friend is with him. So the author was apparently seeing into a different timeline when he wrote the comic. I doubt the writers even thought about it that much, but it does seem that Heroes time travel theory is the parallel timeline one, so they should be able to save New York without any time travel paradoxes getting in the way. I'm sure you are all relieved to hear that.

He's one of Claire's Dad's goons. I doubt he has any super powers but he might. It seemed that Officer Matt couldn't pick up his thoughts. In fact, it was all most as if he were causing Matt to blank out everything.

The first 2 weeks were in HD...dunno what happened Monday but I was PO'd it was ii SD this time. They keep "forgetting".

He was definitely a "black hole" in the thought spectrum. And then he made Matt convulse over the bar stool. That's super power in my book.
In fact, if he was the one going after the little girl at the FBI station, he's got several, if not all, the super powers...he healed after he got shot, he threw psychic waves at the good guys, and then he flew off...

Yeah, those sandy beaches with gorgeous women (and men if you're a lady) walking around on skimpy clothing during year-round perfect weather. Golf or surfing available 365 days a year in a tropical paradise. Yep, who needs that when you can stay indoors and watch TV all day long?
Does anyone know of any plans or scheduled marathon (probably on Sci-Fi or UHD, maybe even on a dead Saturday night NBC wants to plug) of the first episodes of 'Heroes'? My friend/co-worker wants to catch it from the beginning but missed the first two episodes. He only started watching 'Lost' over the summer on my recommendation (even though I've never seen 'Lost') and he got hooked pretty hard via the DVD Box Sets. Now he watches religiously every Wednesday and, since I'm gushing about 'Heroes' (as well as 'Studio 60' so he's borrowing my 'Sports Night' Box Set to get indoctrinated into Sorkin-speak) and he wants in. Any hint of when a 'beginner's marathon' of sorts might happen? SD is acceptable but online or download is a no-no (he wants the TV experience).
Also, does anybody else find it a bit surprising that 'Heroes' airs on NBC without a disclaimer about the level of violence on the show? Every episode so far has featured pretty graphic stuff (pictures of brains, decapitated bodies, spilled bloody guts, etc.) culminating with that 'Holy S....' finale on the autopsy table last week. I don't mind the gore but would find it startling if my young son or daughter were watching (not too far an expectation given the show's name and premise). A little 'This program contains material too impressionable for young viewers... etc.' disclaimer wouldn't hurt. I mean, I remember 'The X-Files' putting warnings of graphic content on episodes with far less gory stuff than what has appeared on 'Heroes' to date. Does Sci-Fi edit the show for content or does it air the same content NBC airs without changes?

Come on now, do we really need to know all the warnings. This political correctness is going to far. Everyone knows this is a action drama with a sci fi twist. Which means you will see some questionable scenes. That is a given for every show of this genre. Do we always need to be told that a violent show will have some violent content. We do not need the networks poiting out each time what they think might be or might not be objectional. If you start to point this out and that out, everyshow on TV would need these warnings. Even if there is a warning, what does it do? Does it make you change the channel? NO! you will still watch with your kid, as will others. These warnings serve no purpose other then getting more people to anticipate a bigger blood scene then the norm. A good example was ER a few years ago. Blood and guts was the norm on that show but they had a warning when the doctor lost his arm in the helicoptor accident. Because that wasn't the norm of the show. Like this show, the norm is going to have people dying and losing limbs because it is a superpowers show. Plus, we have matured a lot since the X-files days. There is more grapihic displays on your TV now then in the days of the X-files.
The old saying is still true if you think it is too violent or graphic. Change the channel. Two and a half men are on CBS. But that show promotes sex. so you really can't win.

NBC Plans Triple-Header of Heroes
By Ben Grossman -- Broadcasting & Cable, 10/13/2006 6:04:00 AM
NBC has called an audible on its plans for Sunday, Oct. 22, opting to run a triple-header of three previously aired episodes of breakout hit drama Heroes on the night its Sunday Night Football franchise rests during the World Series.
NBC’s original internal plan (though never officially announced) was to air three previously aired episodes of rookie drama Friday Night Lights that night from 8-11.
Instead it looks as the network has chosen to try and build on its promising new asset; Heroes is one of just a few network shows that has caught fire early. NBC has already rewarded the show with a back-nine pickup. The drama, from creator Tim Kring, focuses on a group of ordinary people who discover they have super powers.
Friday Night Lights, based on the high school football film and book of the same title, is off to a more modest start, though NBC execs note its tough time period against competition that includes red-hot Dancing With the Stars and steady NCIS on Tuesdays at 8.
While the network says it will stick with the show and give it a chance to settle in, Lights did just a 2.2 rating/6 share in its second original airing Tuesday, off 19% from its debut. The show did, however, gain from a 2.1 to a 2.4 on the half-hour Tuesday night.

Stinky-Dinkins 10-13-06, 01:25 PM Great show so far.
I assumed the politician was the one with the ability to fly, and the younger brother Peter was kind of like Mimic (from the Xmen universe, he was able to copy and use other mutants' powers so long as he was close by them, and he lost them once he was no longer near them.) That Peter kid wasn't able to fly originally without his brother flying up and touching him despite falling a long ways down from that skyscraper, and then he wasn't able to levitate without his brother standing right next to him. The time he tried to fly by jumping off of that thing while that little kid was watching him he just fell flat on his face. I just assumed that though, kind of thought it was implied.

You know that had not occurred to me but it does make sense! If that is the case then he Peter will get the most benefit from a team where he can copy different powers. It has lots of possibilities but it could get really confusing for your average Joe viewer.
Stinky-Dinkins 10-13-06, 02:02 PM Yeah, who knows... but that's my best guess after the first few episodes. I was waiting for the hero with superhuman strength.... that always seems to be one of the most quintessential generic hero powers. I would've bet that at least someone in the show would have it. I was surprised when no one in the first episodes was introduced with it, I guess they're going with less predictable powers.

Maybe this is an explanation of why he was able to forsee him flying that first time: perhaps he's been in proximity of a person with the same power?

Yeah this was posted very early in this thread.
In LOST it didn't say Boeing on the engine. So they were safe. The problem was they showed the companies brand name with out permission, then it made their product look really bad and unsfafe. NBC should have edited the name out then they wouldn't have a problem at all.
Now that's a show i'd watch!
I didn't say only naked women. You like looking at naked men? And you would let your kids watch it also  Sorry, but that's what porno shops are for not regular TV.
CPanther95 10-16-06, 10:29 AM I'd watch that too. But I also don't mind a quick warning at the beginning saying:
This show contains many scenes of gratuitous violence and nudity. Parental guidance is suggested. Also note that there were no doubles or CGI used for any of the many, many nude scenes - and all women are 100% natural. If this offends you, you are alone. ;)

Sorry forgot about that time zone thing, but either way I stand by the warning as being too much. It is a show that one would expect death and destruction. It isn't your GI joe show of yesteryear when everyone was able to jump to safety. If you want it on this show then we can look at all the shows at the 9pm hr(8pm for you). Almost every show on NBC would need a warning. L & O:CI (brutal murders & serial killers), Football(violent sports), Las Vegas(language, nudity, sexual content), the biggest loser( fat people wearing close to nothing to beat the scale, that needs a warning)I'm playing people don't start the hate letters. Then we go to other networks that have the same problems. You said it yourself, where does it end? Do we really need to be told about our choices of television. This isn't the 60's or 70's anymore. We are in the 21st century and the television landscape has changed dramatically and children see more mature things at a younger age than ever before. The shows give you ratings right before it starts now whch should help a parent decide if this will be approriate for them. Plus, you can get good descriptions of the shows content before each airing to protect minors from watching from the networks website.
If you really feel strongly about this why don't you write NBC. They do listen to their viewers most of the time.
ckenisell 10-16-06, 11:21 AM I kinda have to agree with nuttyinnyc on this one. I don't let my 17 month old son watch prime time TV at all. There is this thing called the TV ratings that do get shown at the beginning of the show (I believe it's shown every 30 min. or so.) The V-Chip probably works. You should learn how to use it.
Also, if you use a DVR, you can preview the stuff before you decide whether or not you want your kids to see it. You can even set passwords so you can lock out shows that are above a certain rating.
There's just too much information and technology to use the information out there to blame the networks.
Just my opinion.
Gary*w* 10-16-06, 11:42 AM TV's capable of blocking programming or whole channels, cable boxes capable of the same.

reverse 10-16-06, 03:49 PM I just noticed this thread.
Pretty entertaining show but the audio on the last epsiode (as others have said) was horrible. Constant tinny echo.
Makes sense but the only thing that may possibly debunk this theory is that in the first episode he inidcated that when he got out of bed one day he was hovering. Seems as though the harder he tries to do it, the more he fails but when he doesn't concentrate on flying the ability is there (although he has been by his brother each time we have seen it happen). His brother also stated he didn't know how he flew, he just did but who knows how truthful he was being, he is a politician afterall. Would definately be alot cooler/dangerous if he had the ability to mimic others.
CPanther95 10-16-06, 06:10 PM Pretty crappy superpower if he can only fly when he's sleeping. :)

This weekend the wife wanted to watch "Failure to Launch". At the begining there was a warning about nudity. I turned to my wife and said "I sure hope it isSarah Jessica Parker or Zooey Deschanel, and not Mathew McConaughey that is naked.
We were both shocked and appaled when it turned out to be a naked Terry Bradshaw prancing around the screen. Neither of us wanted to get that familiar with his 58 year old ass. That should get an even more specific warning.
"scenes of geriatric nudity and extreme sagging"
nuttyinnyc 10-16-06, 07:20 PM I am sorry for that but there should be a warnning when they are showing anything about 55.
It's more closely resembles the comics, Rising Stars written by J. Michael Straczynski (http://www.worldsofjms.com/rs/index.htm) Which was out before the 4400.

Is it good or bad that there hasn't been much conversation?
If we see the cop missing his brain in the next few weeks, can we assume that Claire's dad is Silar - or the latest version thereof? Or maybe both he and the "Mysterious Man" are Silar.
The opening recap seemed to imply that Niki killed her husband, as was speculated by others earlier. I still don't like that the shovel was out in the desert - the timeline from that episode doesn't really work, and they need to explain how she got DL out of prison, or found where he was hiding and "took care" of him. Was the tattoo still on Niki's back when she was asleep with Nathan?
When Hiro spoke with Peter on the train, was he confusing him with Nathan or does Peter suffer some disfiguring event in the future? It's long enough in the future that Hiro's english is pretty damn good.
This show is still keeping my attention. I want to see how Hiro and his buddy get away from Tex in the alley.
HDTVFanAtic 10-17-06, 12:42 AM I want to see how Hiro and his buddy get away from Tex in the alley.
Big Ed comes out with Danny and Mike who have spotted them from the surveillance room of the Montecito and break it up. At that point a gust of wind blows Nathan the politician off the roof of the Montecito, but of course he flys down to which they say, if only Monica could have flown, we'd have a totally different story line right now.
That was a twist. Flyboy doesn't actually fly, he mimics the powers of those around him. . .
Can you explain that one a little? Who was he copying? Hiro came from the future all geared up ninja style, were you referring to that part?
IndigoBlu 10-17-06, 01:32 AM it looked like he was able to stop time on the train when hiro was near. and when he was able to fly it was only when he was around his brother. so it does look like he mimics the powers of those around him. the preview of next week also seemed to hint to this..
rebkell 10-17-06, 01:39 AM When Hiro spoke with Peter on the train, was he confusing him with Nathan or does Peter suffer some disfiguring event in the future? It's long enough in the future that Hiro's english is pretty damn good.
This show is still keeping my attention. I want to see how Hiro and his buddy get away from Tex in the alley.
Hiro, in perfect English, addressed him as Peter, so I don't think he mistook him for Nathan.
I liked the show tonight a lot better, I know things have to get set up and put in perspective, but I'm ready for things to start picking up, things have started popping now, the game is afoot.
Did anyone notice how there was a different picture of Chandra Suresh on the back of the book in the recap at the beginning? I wonder what that was all about... it wasn't in the actual show just the recap.
I'm still enjoying this show...
nuttyinnyc 10-17-06, 02:20 AM HDTVFanAtic, You had me really laughing/ Especially when they use the made up Montecito as the place to gamble. There is nothing like free advertising on your other network shows, NBC is cool like that!
Can't wait for that to start'

Exactly! :D :D
If we see the cop missing his brain in the next few weeks, can we assume that Claire's dad is Silar - or the latest version thereof? Or maybe both he and the "Mysterious Man" are Silar.
When Hiro spoke with Peter on the train, was he confusing him with Nathan or does Peter suffer some disfiguring event in the future? It's long enough in the future that Hiro's english is pretty damn good.
I don't think Daddy or the quiet black man are sylar...They seem cold and methodical, like scientists, whereas Sylar comes across as sadistic and predatory. I think they are the Yin to Mohindar's Yang as far as studying these people with abilities. We'll see I guess.
It must be a pretty nasty scar to not be able to recognize him without it! Did you dig Hiro's samurai sword on his back? Cool :-)
How funny, Anyone noticed the Japanese guys were kicked out of the "Montecito"
Yeah, I had just finished telling my fiance that it was probably the same set (looked familiar). Then lo and behold, there's the sign! :-)
Too bad it wasn't Danny kicking them out, that would have been a riot.
Schwingding 10-17-06, 08:30 AM Too bad it wasn't Danny kicking them out, that would have been a riot. That is EXACTLY what I thought, too!

nashvillecat 10-17-06, 08:37 AM Thsi show is great, very original.
Seeinjg Hiro and his bug do the tricks in the casino was classic. Switching of the cards, hilarious! Finally, Hiro uses his powers to a great benefit lol.
What puzzled me had happended last week. The cheerleader had been killed by the dude. Why was an autopsy done? I'm sure the father would never had allowed an autopsy on hisd "special" daughter. Did I miss something?
Does the gebious kid of the mother with the split personality have powers too?
When seducing the politician, was that her or her alter personality? I get confused here.
Very attractive women on this show...blondes.
drsimnal 10-17-06, 08:42 AM I really liked this episode. And I'm really looking forward to the next one. The opening answered my question about why Claire hadn't had her thoracic cage removed during the autopsy. I think that sylar is the quiet black guy. Claire's daddy said something to him about "get it all" in regards to the mind reading cop. I thought that meant "remove all of his brain". I don't know, I was thinking maybe the word "sylar" is the name of their group, or an acronym of something. It's interesting that Nikki has that symbol on her back. Does anyone else have this tattoo? I didn't see one on Nathan Petrelli. I even looked at his torso while he's naked in the preview for next week. That looks like something! The black guy seems to have some sort of anti-ability (like that Leech kid in Xmen the last stand), but it didn't work on Nathan when he flies away from Claire-daddy and quiet dude at gun point.

The coroner had her listed as a Jane Doe--she says that during the dictation. They had pulled her body from a river, no ID. It's standard procedure to do an autopsy on anyone with a sudden, acute death.
When seducing the politician, was that her or her alter personality? I get confused here.
It was her alter ego. She said to the brute in the elevator, Nikki isn't here right now; then proceeded to go and do what Nikki would not have done. Very aggressive, that one.
Schwingding 10-17-06, 08:48 AM Both Mrs. Schwingding and I enjoyed the episode. I was laughing at the lousy production values of the cheerleader autopsy scene though - that was ridiculous! It was no better than if they'd have draped her with a floor mat spray painted to look like a thoracic cage, you could easily see her wiggling around underneath it.

Body was left in a creek, and was classified as a Jane Doe.
Of course, do they still perform autopsies when your head gets impaled by a sharp object?
I am sorry for that but there should be a warnning when they are showing anything about 55.
Oh no you don't, you guys said the human body is beautiful. That means looking at an 90 year-old womans sagging boobs. You can't be selective with your statements. :)

You obviously didn't see Denise Crosby nekked on Dexter this Sunday. That pretty much ends the debate right there. I didn't need to see that :-)

It really was meant as a joke anyways. but you are right, I can't have it both ways. Bring on the naked 55 y/o's.

The black guy with Claires dad has, I think, that symbol as a necklace. Does Nikki always have it?? It seemed when she was back to Nikki, she didnt???

He was also holding it reverently like one would a cross and it looked like he kissed it before he went to “clean out” Matt on the table.
I don’t think Claire’s Dad or the “Blank” guy are Sylar nor working for him. Another agency not formally recognized by the Govt? A “religious” cult trying to understand these changes?
Well Niki is definitely “split personality” girl. I like bad Niki. The tattoo was only visible on her as Bad Niki that I could see so far. It only comes out when she or her son are in some form of danger it would seem. And considering they are touting these powers as genetics in the show, it would stand to reason that her son may have abilities.
What about Claire’s younger brother? Is he adopted as well?
The Montecito bit was a nice little touch as well. Will we see Hiro and his friend winning big in the background of an episode of “Vegas”?
Future Hiro (FuHiro) looks to be a bad-arse. Katana, black coat, and flavor-saver and all. :D
Don’t forget to check out the online comic. It shows more of Claire and the “accident”

They would still perform the Autopsy to see if there was something else wrong that caused the death. Like a heart attack led her to fall in the water and the current of the river was able to move her so fast that she was impaled but a branch of a fallen tree or any other reason. Things like that warrant a complete autopsy. The thing that they did wrong was cut her open first. Normally they would have removed the object first. But NBC wanted a sensational moment.
Ever if they knew who she was I don't "think" the father could stop the autopsy because they needed to determine if was murder or an accident. Any police out there or Coroners can give us feed back on this?

After last night I'm not sure it's a 'split personality' thing. She may be the cliche one with super human strength. The way she took that guy down in the elevator takes more than good karate moves, she lifted him up & threw him down. She had also said she ripped one of the bad guys in half. She just has to *turn* into the incredible hulk. After being the Incredible Hulk, Bixby(sp?) didn't remember what he did, did he?
She only seems to turn into Bad Niki when her son's life is on the line.
lrowland 10-17-06, 10:58 AM So do we really know what Nikki's power is yet? The evil twin bit is not really a power. Indications are that she is very strong - maybe she is the super strong one of the show.
nuttyinnyc 10-17-06, 11:03 AM Anybody else think that the black guy is the little boys father? That would tie up the story a little bit more. Don't you think? I do think that will be a big surprise ending going into the sweeps period(oct 30 episode) Unless I missed something on Moday that proves he isn't the father.
nuttyinnyc 10-17-06, 11:08 AM She only seems to turn into Bad Niki when her son's life is on the line.
She turned into bad Nikki to save herself from being beaten up or maybe worse raped, in the 1st episode. So it isn't only when her son is in danger.

I think it is highly likely that he is the boy's father. I saw a picture in another forum that showed the kid holding the black guy's hand. Here is another picture that shows him right next to Nikki and the kid: http://z.about.com/d/tvdramas/1/0/Y/9/nbc-heroes.jpg
This show rocks. It gets better every week for me. Engaging, funny, surprising .. every week. I love it!
nashvillecat 10-17-06, 11:40 AM A few times during last nights show, I noticed that a few words spoken were distorted (for real). I was trying to figure out if it was my set or the show. Did anyone else here this distortion? It came at the end of a few sentences and maybe only 2 or 3 times.

The only distortions I heard occured when Hiro was stopping time and everything slowed before it stopped.

archiguy 10-17-06, 12:35 PM The most unbelievable bit (and that's saying a lot for this show) had to be Hiro appearing at the end in the subway car speaking perfect, non-accented english. No way could he learn it that fast, that well, not in a year, not in 10, and for most people, not in a lifetime. Unless he has another super-power: super language skills!
Kind of reminded me of that scene in LOST where Jin is speaking perfect english to Hurley in a dream. I suspect this will end up being something similar.
(From Marc Berman’s Tuesday, October 17, 2006, Programming Insider column at Mediaweek.com )
“…At 9 p.m. leadership was mixed between CBS’ Two and a Half Men and bona fide hit drama Heroes on NBC.… Heroes ranked second in the overnights (9.1/13) and total viewers (13.07 million), and a solid No. 1 among adults 18-49 (5.7/13) from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, Heroes grew in the demo from lead-in Deal or No Deal by 10 percent….”

Peter certainly has some power here - otherwise he would not have been able to have a conversation with Hiro while time stopped.
Nachosgrande 10-17-06, 12:52 PM Also, did anyone have trouble with the picture during the last 20 minutes? I had terrible macroblocking and could not make anything out. Could not view the bad Nikki scene - will have to make do online (and NOT HD!!)
lrowland 10-17-06, 12:53 PM Of course, keep in mind that time means nothing to Hiro. He could easily stop time for as long as it takes to learn English and then go about his merry way. I guess he would need to have someone there to help him learn - maybe someone like Peter :)
Hiro's power has to have some limitations though otherwise he will be way to powerful. It will be interesting to see if they use him smartly or if he and his friend keep doing dumb stuff like cheating in Vegas.
A few times during last nights show, I noticed that a few words spoken were distorted (for real). I was trying to figure out if it was my set or the show. Did anyone else here this distortion? It came at the end of a few sentences and maybe only 2 or 3 times.
Mine was like this, but I think it's my DVR recorder. I've only had it a couple of weeks, and I think I have the audio set wrong. Loud scenes, or commercial breaks are slightly distorted. I still need to review my HD recordings to see if I've had the same NBC issues as everyone else.
She turned into bad Nikki to save herself from being beaten up or maybe worse raped, in the 1st episode. So it isn't only when her son is in danger.
Actually she stayed herself during all his threats against her. It was only after he threatened her son directly that she changed over.
acegamer 10-17-06, 01:07 PM Great episode. It's definitely my favorite show on tv right now. I'm curious to find out why Claire is the key to saving everyone. The extent of Claire's and Hiro's powers are pretty interesting to think about. Between the two I would think that Claire is actually the most powerful. She can't be burned and apparently can't be killed at all. If she is shot and they remove the bullet during an autopsy then she will come back to life. I guess an explosion could finish her off though. Or would her body still regenerate itself since there wouldn't be anykind of foriegn object in her body to prevent the regeneration?
Hiro has an incredible power but if someone shoots him then it's all over. If he see's the person about to shoot him then he can easily stop time and avoid it, but if it is a sniper then he has no chance.
I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take the show.
JimsArcade 10-17-06, 01:14 PM What would be brilliant (OK, maybe not brilliant but at least cool) would be to have an episode of Las vegas, in a scene that's treated as an afterthought, where they see Hiro and Ando cleaning house and send their goons to toss them out.
spike jones 10-17-06, 01:21 PM What happened to that cop, did they suck his brains out? I also regretfully missed the bad Niki in Hd. Someone should post screenshots of her...

Maybe Hiro could go back in time and change it and save himself.
Very much agrree -- Hiro and Claire are fascinating characters. I like the fact that the crartors are slowing down what is happening. Really makes for an anticipation of what happens when they all get together!
The most unbelievable bit (and that's saying a lot for this show)...
A show about people with super-powers, and you can't believe somebody could learn accent-free English?

Yeah, althouth the picture was f'd up, the audio was fine. I had to catch the ending online this morning. I was watching on WNBC-DT on my HR10-250, but when I switched over to my local NBC, it seemed fine. So it may have been a "New York" thing.
Anyone else?
If I'm not mistaking Hiro said to Peter he was from the future. Also, since he had that sword, he probably has some bad ass ninja skills which had to take years to learn, hence to time to learn English.
Good episode overall, like the pace, can't wait to see what happens next. However, I'm surprise Suresh(sp) did not recognize Peter from the cab. I don't think much time as passed, less than a week maybe, and he ditched the cab after Claire's dad found him. So he probably didn't have too many passengers.

They might do that. If you watched Las Vegas last year they had Delinda picking up Howie right from the studio after Deal or No Deal show ended. The winners were still on stage when she came on to take him on the jet to perform that night at the Hotel. Then they did it again right before the Olympics were they had the USA guys making a scene in the casino and they got escorted out which went right into their comercial. Both times it was such good editing that it was a pleasent surprise and blended in so nicely. You might see them get thrown out when Las vegas premieres on Friday.

Yeah, I know Dan, I know. The funny thing to me was that after the episode, that's the thing that struck me as "no way". :p I have a couple of Japanese friends who have been in this country speaking english for, literally, 20 years and they still speak with a heavy accent. Always will, according to them. Hiro spoke like a native english speaker with not a trace of an accent. No way. ;)
BTW, does anybody know whether the actor who plays Hiro is a "native" American or not? If not, I guess they could have dubbed him.
